TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

You Can Find References to the Earth and of Every Living Thing Throughout the Scriptures

Why Are You Resisting Taking Care of it? I believe that in order to really Go Green you must first Go God!

W

elcome to our Green Issue. Many people would like to make a difference in the world—yet fail to see the biggest contribution one can give is

honoring God!

How well are we caring for what God has provided? Are we tending to and “keeping good” of our possessions - our cars, homes, clothes, etc.? What about our children? Are we educating them and instilling faith and reverence in God? What would we do if God asked us to return everything He has provided? Would He be happy with your ‘keeping’ or pleased with the condition of what He has provided? “These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, and every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. But there went up a mist from from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground 12

and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.” Genesis 2:4-9 “And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.” Genesis 2:15 “But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the Lord hath wrought this? In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.” Job 12:7-10 Go God! His reward is a far better environment than the one we have today and together we can make a difference, because all things are possible with God! Until, next time...

God Bless You! Here to serve,

Eco-Friendly Business Creates a Buzz

with Subscription-Based Haircuts

W

ith a desire to make hairstyle maintenance affordable and eco-friendly, Jacob Meltzer and Joshua Thorsvik, both young entrepreneurs, knew they were on to something when they started toying with the idea of opening a men’s hair salon that offers a subscription-based payment concept. This idea came to life when Keep It Cut opened its doors, in September 2013. “Believe it or not, there are plenty of men who care as much about their hair as women do,” Thorsvik says. “A high frequency of trips to the hair salon or barbershop starts to add up though.” Regulars, as called in the shop, can choose from a variety of membership levels based on the amount of service desired, starting with unlimited haircuts for $23 a month. Other memberships include services, such as hair washes and beard/mustache grooming. In addition, regulars receive 20 percent off any hair product purchase. The 1,600-square-foot shop focuses on an upbeat, urban feel and boasts a relaxed atmosphere where people are encouraged to come in, sign up and unwind. The duo, along with their designer, Nicole Albrecht of Albrecht Interiors, took care to use minimal and eco-friendly items while remodeling the space. To reduce waste, Albrecht tried to keep as much of the existing infrastructure leaving both the floor and ceiling with only minor modification. FLOR carpet tiles, made from recycled materials, cover the sitting areas. The space was painted with low-odor and novolatile organic compounds. Recycled wood pallets decorate the space, repurposed as furniture. “Creating a smaller carbon footprint was something we all wanted for this business,” Meltzer says. Keep It Cut’s owners are not only passionate about being environmentally conscience, but also socially conscience. Keep It Cut has partnered with community organizations such as Little Big Minds, a preschool focused on providing children a multilingual curriculum; Arizona State University Dance Marathon, raising money for Phoenix Children’s Hospital; Kiva, loaning money to new startup businesses throughout the developing world to alleviate poverty; and St. Baldrick’s Foundation, an organization that raises money for childhood cancer research. 14

A Pair of Endangered Jaguar Cubs is on Display at Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium's Baby Animal Nursery Jaguars are the largest variety of feline found in the New World and third in size behind lions and tigers. Males can grow to about 200 pounds and are known to have the strongest bite of any feline species. Their stocky build enables them to climb with ease in their preferred rainforest habitat enabling them to stalk and ambush prey animals. While most jaguars are yellow with black spots, a sizable fraction of the population, like this new cub, is black with black spots. Jaguars have an extensive range throughout Central and South America and were once found throughout the desert Southwest, including Arizona. Similar to many large vertebrate predators across the globe, jaguars face an uncertain future due to poaching, and deforestation resulting in habitat loss and fragmentation. Many are killed, as a result of increasing human-animal conflicts over space and resources. Housing Angels Save your home from foreclosure

T

here are thousands of homes in the Valley with a set foreclosure date, according to recent statistics. One company that is making a difference in today’s real estate landscape is

the Housing Angels program. The Housing Angels program is groups of “angel” investors that help homeowners avoid foreclosure by purchasing the home via a short sale. Then, homeowners can lease their home from the investors with the option of purchasing their home again. Oftentimes the new rental price is less than the previous mortgage. If program participants are not allowed to stay in their home, they will be placed in a comparable home. Several homeowners have gone through the program and successfully bought back their homes. One Valley couple that has benefited from this program is Lisa Londene and Keith Turley. According to Housing Angels, after going through the program, they saved more than $1,000 a month in mortgage payments and more than $288,000 overall. “Our gratitude cannot be expressed enough to the awesome team at Housing Angels,” Londene says. “They were truly Godsend to us; thank you just doesn't seem to be big enough.” Real estate expert, David Dziedzic, founded Housing Angels in 2010. It was inspired by his personal experience. “Being underwater and facing foreclosure is a terrible experience; I know, I've been there,” Dziedzic says. “That is why I started Housing Angels. We have helped over 1,500 homeowners in the Valley avoid foreclosure and stay in their homes. It has been a lot of work, but well worth it.” 16

Housing Angels has grown profoundly; currently there are more than 50 investors throughout the U.S. and Canada.

raising awareness and funds for autism research and holiday toy drives.

For those who may want other options, such as short selling their homes to relieve debt or leasing to own another property and more, Housing Angels offers a myriad of other programs. “There are currently thousands of homeowners in the Valley with a foreclosure date on their home and the time to act is now,” Dziedzic added. In addition to being a part of the real estate sector, the company also gives back regularly to the local community.

Preserving Wildlife & Wild Places

M

Mickey Ollson is conserving nature for future generations

ickey Ollson is on a mission to preserve wildlife and wild places. “It’s very important to the human race and the quality of life for future generations,” Ollson says, who does his part daily as the founder and director of Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park.

During the mid-1960s, Ollson began raising exotic birds on a 5-acre plot of land in the West Valley near the present zoo site. In the early 70s, he decided to trade some of his birds for mammals. When Ollson was given the opportunity to obtain some camels and zebras, he decided to purchase the 50-acre site (the present zoo site) and breed animals for zoos that needed his expertise. Before Ollson founded Wildlife World more than 30 years ago he was an educator—and the goal of educating the next generation about wildlife and the natural world is close to his heart. Although the zoo, aquarium and now safari park has grown—there are more than 600 species, many of them endangered, on 80 developed acres—the fact that the popular attraction helps to educate Arizona kids is one of his highest points of pride. “We must continue to preach the conservation ethic,” he explains. “The fact that 80,000 school children from across the state come to Wildlife World every year to learn more about wildlife and wild places stands out. Seeing the animals and their habitats up close is different than reading about them in a textbook or seeing them on a screen. I started out as an educator and now we’re helping to educate students from across the state.” In addition to the education element, with Ollson at the helm, Wildlife World has given back immensely to several community and environmental causes. “Over the past two decades, Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium has contributed tens of thousands of dollars as well as thousands more as in-kind support and staff expertise to dozens of local, national and international organizations working on problems ranging from providing 20

assistance to at-risk families here in Arizona to habitat restoration and wildlife conservation all over the globe,” according to Wildlife World. What is the secret to Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium and now recently opened 15-acre Safari Park’s success? Not one to take credit himself, Ollson says that the zoo’s success is thanks to the community that has supported it, including long-time staff and nearly 400,000 visitors a year from across the globe. He notes that, in addition to education, the zoo also helps to propagate many species that are near extinction. “We’re also proud to serve as a recreational

attraction in the West Valley,” Ollson says. “When we first started planning the zoo more than 30 years ago there wasn’t a lot out here [in the West Valley]. We are proud to have filled that void.” Change is another secret to Wildlife World’s success. If you have not visited in the last year or two, you know that if do they will have some new animals or new exhibit building. “We’ve got that reputation among our visitors that there’s always something new,” Ollson says.

Community Activist Mickey Ollson

So what has it been like being on this wild ride of success and sharing it with the community? “It’s been a 30-plus year journey and has been a real pleasure; I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished,” Ollson says. “Wildlife World serves in several areas—in education, environmental, and raising awareness of endangered species. This has all been made possible by our many supporters.” “We are extremely grateful for the three decades of support from the hundreds of thousands of visitors to Wildlife World each year,” Ollson adds. azhealthandliving.com |April 2014

INSPIRATIONAL HOMETOWN DOCS

NEVER LOSE FAITH

By Alison Bailin Batz

Dr. Andrew Buresh

“Dedicated to serving, as one human being to another” For Dr. Andrew Buresh, medicine has always been in his blood – but it took one night to truly seal it in his heart and soul. After growing up in Nebraska, Dr. Buresh, tired of blizzards, attended the University of Arizona for his undergraduate degree, where he graduated with honors, magna cum laude, receiving a double B.S. in Biochemistry and Latin. During college, he was named Outstanding Graduating Senior in the College of Humanities and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Following graduation, Dr. Buresh attended the University Of Nebraska College Of Medicine on scholarship, graduating with distinction and completed his residency at the University of Arizona and fellowship at the Arizona Cancer Center in Tucson. During his final year of his fellowship, Dr. Buresh served as Chief Fellow, participating in research in the field of myelodysplasia. He has written several articles on the subject, co-authored two book chapters, and has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Life was moving along nicely for Dr. Buresh during his Fellowship. Then, in 2002, his turning point, where he went from wanting to be a good doctor to wanting to affect change, occurred. “My wife and I were expecting our second child. While waiting for the new arrival, I was working away during fellowship and moonlighting as a hospitalist and ER physician. However, in her 21st week, my wife lost the baby,” Dr. Buresh says. “As I sat watching my wife in that hospital bed in the middle of the night, our doctor came in and took the time to not just explain the loss, but to feel it with us and generally be there for us in our greatest time of need.” At that moment, Dr. Buresh knew the rest of his life was meant to be dedicated to serving people – and patients – not just as a medical expert, but also as one human being to another. “Until then, I was seeing patients but may not have really seen them. From that day on, my eyes were open – open to the need to treat patients and their families the way I would want to be treated myself or my family to be treated,” Dr. Buresh says. Parkinson’s Disease

A big step forward for research & treatment The first study demonstrating the value of testing a portion of the saliva gland to diagnose a living person with Parkinson’s disease.

D

escribed as a big step forward for research and treatment of Parkinson’s disease, new research from Banner Sun Health Research Institute suggests that testing a portion of a person's saliva gland may be a way to diagnose the disease. When neurologists diagnose Parkinson's disease (PD) or other neurological diseases during life, there is always some inaccuracy and the actual diagnosis is never known for sure unless the patient has passed on, has an autopsy and the brain is examined by a neuropathologist. The accuracy of the clinical diagnosis improves over time, as the neurologist is able to observe the signs and symptoms as they change from year to year, as well as the response to the usual therapy with dopaminergic drugs. When a patient is followed for more than five years the accuracy of the clinical diagnosis is about 75-85 percent, but for patients with newly diagnosed PD, the accuracy is only about 65 percent. This is critical for clinical trials of early-stage disease, as candidate therapeutic agents may not work in that fraction of patients who do not actually have PD but have another cause of their parkinsonism, such as progressive supranuclear palsy. A salivary gland needle biopsy may aid in this dilemma, as the gland tissue often shows accumulation of an abnormally phosphorylated form of the protein alphasynuclein, which is the same microscopic abnormality seen in the brain. This is the first study demonstrating the value of testing a portion of the saliva gland to diagnose a living person with Parkinson’s disease. Making a diagnosis in living patients is a big step forward in our effort to understand and better treat patients. 26

“This procedure will provide a much more accurate diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease than what is now available,” Dr. Beach director of neuropathology at Banner Sun Health Research Institute says. “One of the greatest potential impacts of this finding is on clinical trials, as at the present time some patients entered into Parkinson’s clinical trials do not necessarily have Parkinson’s disease and this is a big impediment to testing new therapies.” “This study provides the first direct evidence for the use of submandibular gland biopsies as a diagnostic test for living patients with Parkinson’s disease,” study co-author Dr. Adler of the Mayo Clinic Arizona says. “This finding may be of great use when needing definitive proof of Parkinson’s disease, especially when considering performing invasive procedures such as deep brain stimulation surgery or gene therapy.” Parkinson's disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects movement. It develops gradually, sometimes starting with a barely noticeable tremor in just one hand. However, while tremor may be the most wellknown sign of Parkinson's disease, the disorder also commonly causes stiffness or slowing of movement. No tests exist to diagnose Parkinson's disease. “Currently diagnosis is made based on medical history, a review of signs and symptoms, a neurological and physical examination, and by ruling out other conditions. Yet up to 30 percent of patients may be misdiagnosed early in the disease,” Dr. Holly Shill director of Parkinson’s Research at Banner Sun Health Research Institute says. Although Parkinson's disease cannot be cured, medications may markedly improve symptoms. This study was funded by the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.

Effective Ways to Banish Bad Breath By MS

O

ne of the first things many people notice about other people is their smile. A beautiful smile can make a strong first impression and boost an individual's confidence as well. However, as strong an impression as a beautiful smile can make, the breath behind that smile is equally important. While what you eat plays a role in whether or not you have bad breath, other factors influence how your breath smells as well.

can result in worse problems, including damage to the jawbone. Other ailments can contribute to bad breathe as well. In addition to diabetes, liver or kidney problems can contribute to bad breath, as can chronic respiratory problems such as bronchitis or pneumonia. Acid reflux can also contribute to bad breath.

Lifestyle habits

While there is no guaranteed way to banish bad breath forever, there are ways to reduce or prevent it.

Certain lifestyle habits strongly influence an individual's breath. People who do not brush or floss daily, for instance, are far more likely to have bad breath. That is because food particles remain in the teeth after eating, promoting the growth of bacteria between teeth, on the tongue and around the gums. That bacterial growth results in bad breath. Another factor that contributes to bad breath is smoking or chewing tobacco. Tobacco-based products are very detrimental to a person's oral hygiene, causing bad breath, but potentially contributing to gum irritation, stained teeth and a reduced ability to taste foods as well.

Individual health Bad breath is not always a reflection of a person's diet or lifestyle choices. Sometimes bad breath might be indicative of a larger issue such as gum disease. As plaque builds up on the teeth, the resulting bacteria cause toxins to form in the mouth. Those toxins irritate the gums. While gum irritation is often painful enough, allowing it to go untreated

Prevention

Stop smoking. Smokers or people who chew tobacco can greatly reduce their risk for bad breath by quitting. While that is easier said than done, it is as close to a guarantee to reducing bad breath as smokers will find.

Stay hydrated. Dry mouth often results in bad breath, so staying hydrated by drinking lots of water can reduce bad breath. Also, chewing sugarless gum can stimulate the production of saliva, helping to keep the mouth moist in the process. Visit the dentist. Many people fear the dentist's chair, but visiting the dentist at least twice a year can greatly reduce the risk of bad breath. A dentist can give a thorough cleaning and will be able to monitor and detect the common problems that contribute to bad breath, such as gum disease or dry mouth.

In addition to brushing your teeth, brush your tongue as well. Be sure to replace your toothbrush, every two to three months, or when it begins to look frayed. azhealthandliving.com |April 2014

FIND BALANCE

By Dr. Tasha Eurich, psychologist, speaker and author of Bankable Leadership: Happy People, Bottom Line Results and the Power to Deliver Both

How to Prevent Job Stress from Ruining Your Life

A

study conducted by the Hay Group found that half of employees believe their current workload is unsustainable. As a result, 33 percent of people start thinking about work the moment they wake up and 75 percent think about it until they go to sleep at night. For many the concept of a real life outside of work is like a unicorn—it might exist, but you have not seen it.

Whether you are spending too much time at the office or taking your stress out on your family, allowing your job take over your life is a slippery slope of misery. Research shows that workers who experience such conflict are less healthy, less happy, and more likely to engage in passive coping behaviors like overeating, drinking or drugs. Here are three tips to end the madness.

Stop wasting time at work. More hours at work do

not always make us more productive. Think about a typical day in the office. You arrive, fire up your computer, and answer email. Then maybe you wander down the hall to the coffee machine and leisurely pour a cup of coffee. You run into your friends and discuss last night’s football game. You wander back to your office, start a task and then you are interrupted by a member of your team—and on it goes. By the time you leave at 7 p.m, you might have had only five to six productive hours. Do you ever wonder if there is a better way? To be done in less time, use the One Less Thing Principle. For every work activity, ask yourself, ‘Can this activity be focused so less time is spent completing it or delegated to another person–be stopped?’ 28

April 2014 | azhealthandliving.com

Harness the power of power breaks. Being tethered to your email 24/7 is not a good idea. One study examined the effect of uninterrupted work on our ability to focus. The researchers asked two groups of students to complete a 40-minute task that required concentration. One group simply completed the task. The other group was asked to stop the task and memorize a set of numbers at three points while they completed it. The results were striking. Even though the second group spent less time on the task, they performed better. Viewing the numbers served as a “power break”: something that let them briefly turn their attention from the task to something else. Similarly, power breaks from work help us perform better. Certainly, it is not easy to take a three-week vacation and lock your phone in the hotel safe. However, at a minimum, carve out evenings and weekends to escape your “technology tether.” Perhaps you cannot unplug every evening—then aim for three evenings per week. If you have to work on a Saturday, do not work Sunday. Find what works for you.

Get moving. There is a great deal of evidence that exercise reduces stress—in particular, high-intensity workouts have proven effective in reducing anxiety. Recent research suggests that exercise actually decreases work-family conflict. In a study of 476 workers, Russell Clayton and his colleagues found that people who exercised regularly had less conflict between work and home.

What to Do When You Suspect Child Abuse By Rayne Golay, author of The Wooden Chair

Child abusers can look like upstanding members of society. They can be your very nice neighbor, a trusted professional, or the person at the grocery store. Here are suggestions for recognizing and reporting suspected child abuse.

Do not be afraid to be wrong. You do not need to have hard evidence or proof of child abuse or neglect to report your concerns. If you are wrong, social workers and investigators will soon discover that and close the case. It might be uncomfortable for the alleged abuser and he or she may get angry. However, you can report anonymously, and it is far better to risk someone taking offense or social workers finding no evidence of abuse than for a child to suffer because no one speaks up.

Actions often speak volumes. Does a young child

cringe, raise an arm defensively or try to hide when her mother turns to her? These behaviors can be the reflexive response of a child who is frequently hit. Do you know a child who has become withdrawn, had a persistent loss of appetite, or started doing poorly in school? Changes in behavior may signal a variety of emotional problems, including abuse and neglect. What about witnessing an adult lose their patience with a child at a store or other public place in a manner that seems over-the-top? If it appears to be an emergency, call 911. Otherwise, try to defuse the situation. You might smile at the parent and say something like, ‘It can be so hard to bring kids shopping. I remember it well.’ Scolding or criticizing will only make the situation worse, but attention and understanding words may calm the person.

How to report concerns. If you want to talk to a

professional crisis counselor before making a report, call Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline, 1-800-4-ACHILD (1-800-422-4453). While counselors cannot file a report for you, they can answer your questions, provide information about resources, and discuss the situation that has drawn your concern. The hotline is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you witness a situation that requires an immediate law enforcement response, call 911. azhealthandliving.com |April 2014

Making Behavioral Changes That Last

W

e all have certain behaviors and habits we want to change—and we really can change behavior, problem is, most people try to do it through sheer willpower alone, and that will not work. Without a more comprehensive strategy in place, you are just setting yourself up for failure. If you are serious about changing unhealthy aspects of your life, whether you are looking to overcome an addiction, lose weight or break destructive relationship patterns, you must first understand that real change takes a lot more than willpower or wishful thinking.

There are five tried-and-true keys to behavior change, steps that can help you get on track—and stay there. It is entirely possible to create a better you. You simply have to be willing to commit to these five steps. Lifestyle change is not a one-step fix—it is a constant process. If you are ready to do what it takes to make your change last, then read on to learn the five basic keys to behavior change.

Stoke your motivation. Most of us are in the habit of beating ourselves up if we lack motivation. Somehow, we think we have failed if we just cannot muster the energy to go to the gym or to pay the stack of bills that is accumulated—But guess what: That is normal. Motivation is not static; it ebbs and flows just like the tide. Have you ever noticed how you are super-motivated at the outset of a personal change effort, but a week later you have run out of steam? The key is to develop ways of keeping motivation at the forefront of your mind enough of the time to make a difference. Motivation is about emotion and passion—in other words, why you want to do something. They set goals—‘I want to lose a few pounds’—but have nothing in place to drive that behavior. Why do you want to lose a few pounds? It is the why that is going to influence your actions. You might say, ‘I do not want to have a stroke when I am 60 like my 30 April 2014 | azhealthandliving.com

dad did,’ or, ‘I want to live long enough to see my grandchildren graduate from college.’ Coming up with a mantra that captures your why and visualizing both what you don’t want (you eating junk food and having a heart attack) and what you do want (you exercising and enjoying an outing with your family). Yes, it is OK to be negative! In most instances, it is a fear of loss and negative consequences that kick-starts motivation the hardest.

Find a way to self-monitor. A great deal of human behavior is done on autopilot—so if you want something to change, you will have to pay attention to your own behavior and experience. Otherwise, by the time you realize you are going in the wrong direction it will be too late. Yes, the concept is simple (in theory, anyway): Vigilance is associated with success. The more you are aware of what you are doing, the more you can control it.

Most people write down their behavior patterns, but you might just as effectively talk into a recorder. Not only does keeping a record help you pay attention to what you’re doing, it allows for subsequent analysis that will help you understand what prompts your behavior, and any patterns it might fall into. Since many people tend to self-monitor with diligence in the beginning but gradually become more and more lax, record every instance of a successful or unsuccessful behavior in the first week. Thereafter, pick one day a week for self-monitoring.

Hone your self-control skills. While willpower goes

only so far without good habits to bolster it, it is still an important part of the lifestyle change equation. Selfcontrol is a critical skill when changing a behavior and the good news is that it can be developed. In fact, the improvement of self-control is a particular skill. There are two broad approaches to managing temptation. The first is avoidance, but let us face it—that is not alway possible. A better strategy is to confront your temptation and develop

a controlled way to deal with it. As mentioned before, visualization is a valuable tool because it allows you to ‘practice’ your self-control without being exposed to reallife dangers and pitfalls. Essentially, on a daily basis you need to imagine yourself successfully resisting difficult situations. The ultimate self-control is being able to throw away or discard the things that are enabling your unhealthy behavior, such as a favorite junk food, alcohol, cigarettes and so on. When you feel that you are ready, you might even want to seek out a situation in which you will be tempted and “stare down the beast,” so to speak. For example, you might go shopping with friends and challenge yourself to spend only $50. If temptation occurs when you are not seeking it out, remember that there is no shame in resisting by any legal method you can. Walk away. Leave the building. Go to the restroom. Make an important phone call!

Identify and manage “backsliding” red flags. You

may have noticed, your moods, outlooks and attitudes tend to change almost constantly—and they play an important part in the decisions we make and the way we behave. Many people are more prone to make unhealthy decisions, give in to temptation, or otherwise “backslide” when they are tired, stressed or angry, to name a few common weak spots. Fortunately, knowledge is power. When you are able to identify and anticipate things that typically cause you to slide into a self-destructive state, you will be much better equipped to handle them. For example, if you know that having to present at the quarterly meeting will cause you to stress-eat whatever is in the break room for days beforehand, you can proactively practice other stressmanagement techniques, such as deep breathing exercises and visualization. To help you identify and then manage self-destructive states, ask yourself what moods, physical states (e.g., pain, fatigue), people, places, and times of day are associated with self-destructive states. Then brainstorm how you can manage them, how you can avoid them, and who can help you handle them effectively.

Take a hard look at the “other people” factor. The fact is, others have a huge influence over our behavior, and since no one lives in a vacuum, you will have to factor in other people when going after your resolution-keeping goals. It is important to realize that no matter what your preconceived opinions or decisions might be, your behavior will change to reflect that of the people you spend time around. As much as possible, avoid people who are not acting the way you want to act and seek out those who have the same health and life goals as you. azhealthandliving.com |April 2014

Q. Over the past 10 to 20 years, my eyelids have become baggier. Can this be easily treated? A. It is very common that gravity, over many decades, shows its effects in increased drooping and bagginess of eyelids, both upper and lower. These conditions can now be very effectively treated with Laser Blepharoplasty, a treatment where the skin of the eyelids is tightened with laser precision. Traditionally this has been done in the past with a scalpel, but we now have the laser technique, which can accomplish eyelid tightening more precisely, and significantly minimize the bruising and swelling seen with the more traditional methods. With the laser technology, you can return to your normal activities by the following day. Q. For eyelid tightening, should I consult a plastic surgeon or an eye surgeon? A. We have great respect for our plastic surgeon colleagues for performing body procedures such as liposuction, tummy tucks, etc. However, when thinking about performing delicate work around the eyes, ophthalmologists like us are rather territorial when it comes to eyelids. The function of the eyelids in protecting our eyes must be respected. Eyelids are the windshield wipers for our eyes. Removing the eyelid bags in a fashion that leads to a pleasing cosmetic result yet safely preserves eyelid function for the eyes is our greatest priority. Having an experienced eye surgeon, combined with the advantages of laser technologies, are important priorities in the successful rejuvenation of eyelids. –Dr. Walman Walman Eye Center 602.222.2020

Q.

Can a puff of air in your ear stop migraine headaches?

A. Sounds crazy, I know, however, a clinical trial conducted by my colleague Dr. David Sullivan of Mechanicsburg suggests pressurizing the ear canal with air can eliminate the pain from migraine.

I had the opportunity to study the technique known as the Sullivan Insufflation Method in his office. The results of his procedure were quite remarkable. His research is ongoing, but the positive outcomes so far with headache patients are dramatic. The technique involves gently blowing air against the eardrum (insufflation) using a device called a pneumatic otoscope. Ear, nose and throat doctors commonly perform this technique as a diagnostic procedure for ear conditions. Dr. Sullivan found that ear insufflation, when performed during a migraine can reduce or completely abort the attack. I personally witnessed the effectiveness of the technique on patients with headache and with trigeminal neuralgia as well. The exact mechanism by which ear insufflation reduces pain is still under study, but the method appears to modulate a large nerve center in the head known as the Trigeminal Ganglion. It has been known for years that patients suffering with migraine headache have abnormal function in this nerve center. With Dr. Sullivan’s insufflation treatment, it may be possible to modulate abnormal activity in the Trigeminal Ganglion in migraine and other types of head-pain patients by simply switching off the pain with a puff of air. The technique is safe, simple and virtually painless; I had it done on myself. Yet, the pain relieving ability for migraine and facial pain is remarkable. –Dr. Kukurin Kukurin Chiropractic, Acupuncture & Nutrition Network 623.547.4727

Q. I have two bald spots. Is there a minimally invasive procedure to restore my hair?

A. Hair loss affects approximately 35 million men and 21 million women in the United States. More than 40 percent of men will have noticeable hair loss by the age of 35, while 65 percent of women will have noticeable hair loss by the time they are 60. It is estimated that 1 billion dollars a year are spent on baldness treatments. Arizona Hair Restoration utilizes NeoGraft, a minimally invasive hair loss solution that can treat male pattern baldness and female baldness in almost half the time of any other hair restoration procedure or technique currently available. The technology in the NeoGraft is the result of 10 years of research, offering the next generation in automation of hair transplantation. NeoGraft is currently being used in Europe and Asia and is now FDA cleared for use in the United States. More than 6,000 NeoGraft hair transplants have been done in the last two years with amazing results. NeoGraft is the least invasive procedure of its kind –no scalpel incision, sutures or linear scars—with a fast recovery time (next day).

A. Headaches often seem to be centered around or behind the eyes. There are many conditions related to the eyes that can be the cause of headaches. If the headaches are related to an ocular condition the problem can be identified with a comprehensive eye examination. While many times the causes of headaches are not eye related the following are a few types of headaches that affect the eye.

tens if not hundreds of items that are available for every department of your life. Each one claims it is essential to your life and will make you happier, healthier, better, but when it comes to your teeth, we have some advice on what is worth the hard earned dollar. Your toothbrush! Not surprised are you? Not all toothbrushes are created equal. We recommend a toothbrush that is about a half-inch wide and about one-inch tall with soft bristles for most adults. The medium to hard bristles may actually damage your gums, root surfaces and the protective tooth enamel. Your toothbrush’s best sidekick is floss and just like brushes, there are many different options. Because everyone has different spacing when it comes to their teeth, find a type of floss that can pass between your teeth without a “snap” of the floss. Whether you use waxed, or unwaxed, single or multifilament floss, the bottom line is that you are flossing. One last at-home product is a good mouthwash. Mouthwash can loosen particles of food before brushing and flossing, kill germs and bacteria. Mouth rinses that have fluoride are a great way to boost your prevention of tooth decay. Do not forget keeping regular appointments with your local dentist is important to make sure that any oral health problems are identified as soon as possible.

my headaches?

Eye strain. Eye strain results from the eyes overworking the focusing muscle. Headaches from eyestrain usually cause a brow ache to aching behind the eye. Other associated symptoms are fluctuating vision and an inability to focus at close range. Migraine. Migraine headaches are vascular in nature but can be centered around the eyes. They are often preceded by an aura of shimmering lights in the peripheral vision. A particular type of migraine called an ophthalmic migraine will cause the aura of light with noassociated headaches. With a classic migraine there is often extreme sensitivity to light. Other causes of headache can be related pathologic conditions of the eyes like glaucoma. In glaucoma the pressure in the eye rises to a level that can cause a headache and damage to the optic nerve. Headaches are frequent in a particular type of glaucoma called narrowed angle glaucoma. If you think your eyes may be the cause of your headaches an evaluation by your eye doctor may help you in managing your headaches or rule out the eyes as a cause.

Q. Is temporomandibular joint disorder

(TMD) related to sleep-disordered breathing?

A.

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) can be very painful and is often accompanied by headaches, toothaches and more bizarre symptoms. sleep-disordered breathing symptoms can both overlap and mimic those of sleep-disordered breathing. Many dentists consider temporomandibular joint problems to be somewhat of a gray area because the conditions associated with its complex task of permitting the movement of the jaw without friction is sometimes difficult to define and even more complicated to treat. Some dentists believe that sleep-disordered breathing is partly the existence of a temporomandibular joint problem and partly the manifestation of a sleepdisordered breathing problem. The simplest way to understand the connection: the bruxism (teeth grinding) or jaw shifting associated with sleep-disordered breathing (occurring when sleeping patients are unconsciously trying to find the best possible positioning of their airway) may inflame the temporomandibular joint or exacerbate a problem with the joint that was pre-existing. Headaches, a clicking jaw, malocclusion (misalignment of teeth) and condyle and disc displacement are all associated with sleep-disordered breathing . However, these symptoms often occur in patients with sleep-disordered breathing as well. Research in the journal Sleep determined in 1993 that nocturnal headaches may be caused by temporomandibular joint disorder, or triggered by sleep-disordered breathing —“with very similar clinical manifestations but very different therapeutic implications.” If you have temporomandibular joint disorder, I suggest you ask your dentist to screen you for sleep-disordered breathing . –Dr. Croft Vistancia Orthodontics 623.566.0800 azhealthandliving.com | April 2014

Q. How can tinnitus be treated? A. Tinnitus is a condition that is described

as whistling and hissing in the ear and is often accompanied by hearing loss. According to the American Tinnitus Association, about 40 to 50 million Americans experience some degree of tinnitus in their life. A common cause of tinnitus is a long history of loud noise exposure. However, tinnitus can be a secondary result from some ear disorders, neck/head injury, side effect of medication, cardiovascular disorders, and certain rare and serious conditions such as a tumor. Acupuncture usually provides relief of tinnitus symptoms. Some tinnitus cases showed results of decreased level of ear ringing and patients responded well to treatment. As the case of tinnitus varies from person to person, it is important to give a proper evaluation of the causes of the tinnitus before acupuncture treatment. Evaluation by collecting patient history, proper neurological test, combined with traditional pulse palpation and tongue evaluation are necessary to locate the “root cause” of the tinnitus. According to principle of Traditional Chinese Medicine, tinnitus occurs due to liver Yin deficiency, weakness of kidney Qi and triple burner (a term to describe the energy pathway pass through the level of the body) In other words, the energetic level of kidney and liver is a significant factor. Some cases of tinnitus are accompanied by dizziness, vertigo, neck, and jaw pain and vomiting. After eliminating the possibilities of structural change or damage to the inner ear, acupuncture will be a safe and effective option for treatments of tinnitus.

Q. What are the possible causes of

Q. How can laser treatment combat the

A. Balance is one of the most important functions of our body that make us human. Being able to stand or walk without falling or holding onto support allows us to observe a wide range of things and other people and it allows us to use our remarkable hands. Fall injuries, especially in the elderly, carry a heavy price of disability and even death.

A. Multiple factors contribute to skin aging: loss of elasticity results in laxity, accumulation of sun damage results in irregular pigmentation and delayed cell turnover results in a dull complexion. Each of these factors need to be addressed when treating the aging face. Advanced laser treatments are now available, which can stimulate collagen to improve elasticity, remove brown pigment for complexion blending and resurface the skin for smoothing texture.

balance problems?

Balance requires four major components of the body’s function to work properly. Three of them are sensory systems: • Vision allows you to orient your body with the ground, upright and moving toward your destination. • The sense of proprioception allows us to sense the position of our bodies without looking. You know your foot is in front of you, about six inches off the ground and poised to strike the pavement. • The vestibular system allows you to sense movement, even if your eyes are closed. • The cerebellum allows you to coordinate the movements of the body, even when standing up straight. Common things that can cause damage to these systems are diabetes, stroke and inner ear diseases. Things to watch out for are: widened, slowed, or unsteady gait, frequent stumbling or needing to hold onto support. Problems like this can worsen over time and can easily be overlooked. Luckily, your doctor can help you detect and treat balance disorders. While you are healthy, consider doing some sort of balance training exercises, like Tai Chi or yoga. Exercising regularly helps reduce the risk of falls and fall injuries. –Dr. Wen Sage Health Family Medicine 623.535.3857

Q. How can I treat the common aches and pains that occur as I get older?

Q. My child is wheezing. Does he/she have asthma?

Q. Are there treatment options for Rosacea?

A. Finally, you are at the age where you can retire and enjoy golfing, bocci and long hikes. So what limits you? For many, its knee pain, sciatica or good old-fashioned arthritis. Your once annoying little pain in your knee has now grown to keep you from shopping and getting out of the house, climbing stairs. We often chalk this up to just “getting old.” Yet you earned this time to enjoy your retirement. Do not let pain interfere with this!

A. Wheezing is not normal and it should not be ignored. There are many reasons why your child is wheezing and asthma is only one of them.

A. While many people are unaware of the true definition of Rosacea, most people may recognize the facial flushing, bright red bumps, acne-like inflamed whiteheads, cheek redness, itching or prominent blood vessels seen in the central face. Another classic sign of this skin condition is an enlarged red nose with many red vessels; W.C. Field’s nose is a well-known example.

Pain needs to be diagnosed and treated by a specialist who understands what may be going on with you. As a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician specializing in pain management, I can look at the entire body’s “kinetic chain,” determine where the source of pain is and give you options for treatment. It is important to seek treatment not only to improve quality of life, but to decrease other problems that are linked to uncontrolled pain, such as sleep disturbance, high blood pressure, atrophy (muscles shrinking), bone loss from lack of activity, obesity, low testosterone and depression. Treatment options are numerous: Viscosupplementation (replacing joint fluid), radiofrequency treatment, platelet rich plasma therapy (regenerative medicine) and spinal cord stimulation for nerve pain or Botox for headache and neck issues. Also, more traditionally, cortisone injections can be done but should be limited. These interventions coupled with a structured physical therapy program can make a dramatic difference in quality of life. Other common sense lifestyle changes include losing weight, exercise, orthotics, smoking cessation and using aspecialized mattress and pillows. –Dr. Lundquist Active Life Physical Medicine & Pain Center 623.535.9777

We first need to establish the cause of wheezing. How often does it occur? How severe is it? How long has your child been wheezing? A physical exam by your pediatrician is necessary. Because the common causes of wheezing may have overlapping symptoms, your physician plays a vital role in the diagnosis. Asthma triggers include respiratory infection, irritants (such as dust, chemical and pollution), allergies and exercise. Wheezing caused by asthma can be reversible or the symptoms can improve after the use of a bronchodilator. Many times x-rays are not necessary to diagnose. The best way to manage asthma is to identify the triggers and then avoid them. Asthma can be managed by controlling the irritation and inflammation caused by the trigger. Keeping a diary of your child’s symptoms to share with your physician is another way to identify the triggers. Your physician can use this valuable information for the best outcome. The information contained in this column is provided for informational purposes only and is not for use in diagnosing any condition. The information is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, care or treatment. Certain foods, alcohol, chemicals, climate changes, emotion, activity and stress may easily trigger the symptoms. While there is no cure for Rosacea, many conventional and alternative treatments can be combined to control this skin disorder. Oral and topical antimicrobial agents are often used to control redness and bumps. If a patient is not responding to, or prefers not to be on long-term prescription medication, then laser treatment is a consideration. Photofacial and Laser Genesis work well in reducing and controlling redness, vessels, and acne-like bumps. Laser treatments are not painful and can be administered weekly or bi-weekly depending on severity. Photodynamic Therapy using topical Levulan and BluU Light is another option for severe cases. Three to five treatments may be necessary and annual maintenance. Laser treatment is a consideration in the therapy and control of Rosacea due to its high success rate. Long-term effects of Rosacea, when untreated, can lead to a marked worsening of symptoms as well as permanent thickening of the nose tissue. Clear skin is possible with laser therapy. –Dr. Maltais Physician Skin Solutions at Arrowhead 602.843.4040 azhealthandliving.com | April 2014

BUSINESS TALK

Q. What is the latest news of births and arrivals at Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park?

A. Over the past few weeks, Wildlife Zoo

continued its 30th anniversary celebration with the unveiling of three additional species at its recently launched 15-acre Safari Park expansion. The new species include olive baboons, jackals and the Southwest's only white African lion. Visitors have the opportunity to see the young female white lion exploring the Safari Park's spacious new lion habitat each day. Zookeepers will spend the next year or more introducing the youngster to the park's older lion pair with whom she shares the exhibit. Also making their debut is a trio of Olive baboons. Almost dog-like in appearance with a longer snout and preference for walking on all fours, Olive baboons can grow quite large with some males reaching as much as 100lbs. Despite an extensive primate collection of about two dozen varieties, these are the first baboons in Wildlife World's 30-year history. Rounding out the latest additions is a pair of African Jackals, small predators with slender legs and large ears for cooling. With the largest collection of wild animals in the state of Arizona, springtime always brings new animals the old-fashioned way. This spring has been no exception with a variety of births including monkeys, antelopes, aquatic birds and a pair of endangered jaguars, the third largest feline species in the world after tigers and African lions. We are extremely grateful for three decades of visitor support from the thousands of guests to Wildlife World each year. – Dr. Grey Stafford Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park wildlifeworld.com

Q. What does green have to do with your health?

A. Wheatgrass powder (the green drink) is a natural product with numerous benefits for everyone. It benefits as a powerful antioxidant, preventing damage caused by free radicals to the cells of your body. It is 70 percent chlorophyll, and the chlorophyll molecule is virtually identical to hemoglobin (red blood cells that carry oxygen), and helps oxygenate your body. Some of the resulting benefits your body may produce are detoxification over a cellular level, reduced inflammation of your system, more energy, a sense of mental and physical well-being, increased mental clarity, steadier nerves and a stronger body defense mechanism. In a live blood cell analysis (under a microscope), you can visually see the results of it working, including the unclumping of oxygen-carrying red blood cells. Oxidation damages to the cells can cause many health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, bowel inflammation and susceptibility to colds and flu. There are also large amounts of betacarotene in wheatgrass, which protect the cells from the damage of free radicals. Skin care specialists endorse the supplement for its ability to enhance the skin’s beauty and slowing down its aging process through internal cleansing and detoxification. It also eliminates general inflammation and aids in relief from common body aches and pains. Nutritionists love this supplement, packed with maximum health and nutritional compounds. This green antioxidant rich supplement helps strengthen the body’s immune system, to help reduce the risk of disease and improve overall health. – Ken & Barb Hall Best Organic Wheatgrass 1.888.260.GREEN (4733) bestorganicwheatgrass.com

Q. If a care giving company only provides personal care and assistance with light household chores, why do they employ registered nurses as administrative staff? A. There are four important reasons why our nurses at Sun Cities CareGivers are an integral part of our company: 1. Registered nurses do the initial assessment of each client. That information is used to create a plan of care. The plan of care then provides the caregivers instructions regarding what needs to be done in the home during their visit. The RN will continue to monitor the client’s progress and make visits to the home. 2. The RN supervises your caregiver(s). If there is a change in your health condition or behavior, the caregiver’s first point of contact is the RN. The RNs also provide training to the caregivers when the doctor has prescribed special treatments. 3. If we are contacted to do an assessment while the client is in a healthcare facility, the RN can assist with the discharge planning. Having medically trained personnel providing the assessment is important. At times, home health care (physical therapy, occupational therapy, wound care, etc.) is also needed and our RN can bring that to the attention of the discharge planner. 4. Our RNs can be a very constructive and critical part of creating an aftercare plan during the discharge process and can help to avoid readmissions to the hospital. –Lola Judy Sun Cities CareGivers 623.974.2397

Q. Are there specific activities I can do to improve my memory skills?

A. The general idea of memory and aging is to keep the mind highly focused and engaged in activities that demand concentration, or mastering new skills. I would like to address simple activities that we can do to spark memory neurons. The following is an activity to keep your brain working in the area of prospective memory, whereby you must remember to perform a planned action or intention at the appropriate time.

1. Pick two or three words, write them down and look them over until they connect in your brain (you can make up a story or think of funny ways to link them together). 2. In 30-60 minutes, remember to say these 2-3 words before you complete an upcoming task (i.e., I will remember to say my special words before I open the locker at the gym or before leaving home). 3. Check to see if you were successful at remembering to recall the 2-3 words and if you remembered them correctly. 4. Working memory means remembering things within a very short span of time (minutes). To work this area of memory think of a word, spell it forward and then spell it backwards. As this skill improves, pick harder and longer words. Use the microphone portion of your phone, or write the word down, to check for accuracy. –Dr. Benson Excel Brain Fitness Center 602.451.8043

Q. I just got a new pair of hearing aids that are “Bluetooth” compatible. What does that mean? A. Bluetooth is a form of wireless signal. Hearing aids that are Bluetooth compatible can lock into this signal because they are equipped with the appropriate receiver. This allows the wearer to perform functions such as answering their telephone or listening to their television set without having to compete with the other sounds that are present in the room. It provides the best possible signal to noise ratio for specific listening situations and can significantly increase the quality of life for the wearer. Bluetooth devices are usually an “add on” feature for hearing instruments and do require the wearer to install and be able to operate a few peripheral devices. The average cost of this additional system typically goes for $350-$500 and requires very little instruction to get you started. If you feel that you or a loved one could benefit from Bluetooth compatible hearing aid devices, contact your local hearing healthcare professional to get a more detailed explanation today.

Myths & Facts About Bedwetting

I

f your child stays dry during the day but wets at night, the situation is likely to be confusing and frustrating for everyone involved. You may wonder if you are doing something wrong. It turns out that conventional wisdom is not always so wise when it comes to bedwetting. Here are few myths and tips on your journey to dry nights.

You have to wait for your child to outgrow bedwetting. There are safe, effective techniques to help your child stop wetting the bed, so there is no need to wait what might be years for the problem to go away on its own. Most bedwetting children have mental or physical problems. Only three in a hundred children who urinate while sleeping have a physical or urologic cause for it. Likewise, psychological problems rarely cause bedwetting.

If a child is a sound sleeper, a bedwetting alarm will not work for her. It is true that bedwetting children are less likely to be woken by external stimuli than their parents are and that is OK! Initially, the alarm is meant to prompt Mom or Dad to accompany their child to the bathroom.

Unlike conventional alarm clocks, bedwetting alarms do not ring at a pre-set time. A moisture sensor triggers the alarm, which wakes you and your child. At this point, you can make sure that your child gets up and goes to the bathroom. After a few weeks of associating the alarm with the need to urinate, your child’s brain will begin to understand the feeling of a full bladder, and will wake up.

If your child does not tell you he or she is bothered by bedwetting, your child probably does not care if they are wet. The fact is no child wants to wake up in a

It is crucial to realize that children do not wet their beds voluntarily. Bedwetting can be caused by a multitude of factors, such as genetics, small functional bladder capacity, food sensitivities, high nighttime urine production, and even constipation.

wet bed. Your child might not have spoken up due to embarrassment or because he or she does not believe, anything can be done.

Bedwetting is nothing but a pesky problem that will eventually go away. You might not have thought about it, but bedwetting can impact your family financially and emotionally. For example, one or two extra loads of laundry can cost up to $700 a year! Furthermore, bedwetting can negatively affect your child’s self-esteem. Do not brush bedwetting off—it is worth the effort to overcome it now.

My child is alone in having this problem. In a class

of 25 8-year-olds, for example, at least one or two children besides your child are likely to wet the bed.

Bedwetting occurred because I left my child in disposable pants too long. Most children are day toilet trained between ages two and four, but daytime bladder control has no bearing on nighttime wetting. Using disposable pants at night can actually decrease parent frustration until a treatment program is in place.

Parents should restrict privileges or punish their children. It is crucial to realize that children do not wet their beds voluntarily. Bedwetting can be caused by a multitude of factors, including genetics, small functional bladder capacity, food sensitivities, high nighttime urine production, and even constipation—but a wet spot in the morning is not a result of your child being too lazy to get out of bed. Children very rarely wet their beds on purpose. In fact, most feel frustrated, embarrassed, and upset when they wake up to wet sheets. Punishing your child for not having a dry night will only compound these feelings and hurt his self-esteem.

Smile. Your search for a new dentist is over! We provide thoughtful, modern dental care. Call for an appointment today. Emergency appointments available.

Puberty will end bedwetting. While it is true that the

number of children who wet their beds decreases with age, 1 percent of 18-year-olds continue to deal with this issue. Since puberty does not cure bedwetting, there is no reason to wait for your child to reach the teen years before starting treatment.

Medication is a sure cure for bedwetting. Shortterm medications can work well in situations when a child has to be dry (for example, camps or sleepovers), but it rarely helps a child permanently overcome bedwetting. In fact, children who use alarms are nine times more likely to become dry and stay dry than those who rely on medication alone.

“Many parents think that bedwetting is something that can’t be controlled and that their child will just have to grow out of it—or they blame themselves or their child for the recurring problem —and because many parents don’t talk to their children’s pediatrician about bedwetting, they don’t realize that all of those assumptions are false.”

The Many Benefits of Buying Locally

B

uying locally is a great way for consumers to find the products and services they are looking for and help their local economy along the way. The small businesses in your community may be owned by your next-door neighbor, who relies on his or her fellow townspeople to keep the business going strong. Buying locally is not only beneficial for local business owners, but buying locally benefits consumers and members of the community in a number of ways.

Creates jobs. Buying locally creates jobs in your community,

potentially creating a job for you, a friend or family member.

Helps the environment. Buying within your community

reduces the amount of fuel you are likely to use for a weekend shopping trip, while also reducing pollution. In addition, many local storeowners use local materials and ingredients, reducing the amount of fuel consumed to get products into the store.

Creates a more closely-knit community. Buying locally is

an opportunity to strengthen that bond with your neighbors, creating a close-knit community in which residents may feel safer and more comfortable.

More convenient. Convenience is paramount to many

consumers, and buying locally saves both time and money. Driving to a faraway mall or shopping center or paying costly online shipping fees is not nearly as quick or convenient as shopping within your community, where you can purchase and take home items on the same day without using a full tank of gas or paying for shipping.

Benefits your local economy. In 2004, the consultancy Civic

Economics was commissioned by Chicago's Andersonville Chamber of Commerce to examine the economic impact of 10 local businesses against that of chain businesses. The study found that of every $100 spent at local businesses, $68 remained in the local economy, while only $43 of every $100 spent at chain stores remained in the local economy. That is a significant boost to your local economy, and all it requires is shopping at local retailers.

The reasons for shopping locally are many. In addition to helping local business owners, consumers who shop locally are also helping themselves. 46 April 2014

Can increase your property value. Homeowners might be

able to increase the value of their homes by buying locally. A joint study from Independent We Stand and Civic Economics found that cities with a strong centralized small business district had a 54 percent greater increase in property values than communities that did not have such a district. A more thriving local community, including a thriving shopping district, is no doubt attractive to prospective homebuyers.

STAY ACTIVE & FIT

By MS

How to Make Your Exercise Routine Eco-Friendly Making exercise a part of your daily routine is a great way to ensure your body stays healthy for years to come. Making such a routine as eco-friendly as possible can ensure the planet stays as healthy as you do.

D

aily exercise is a great way for men and women to stay healthy and improve their quality of life. Studies have shown that men and women who include exercise as part of their regular routine have a lower risk for a host of ailments, including heart disease, stroke and diabetes. However, exercise can benefit the planet as much as it can benefit people. The following are a handful of ways men and women can make their exercise routines more ecofriendly.

However, cycling benefits the planet, too. Riding your bicycle to the gym or to work each day saves fuel and can add years to the life of your vehicle, reducing the costly toll of producing and transporting new vehicles. Cycling has even become safer in recent years as more and more people have embraced cycling as a healthy and eco-friendly mode of transportation.

Avoid bottled water

Start riding your bicycle

Whether you are a competitive athlete or a weekend warrior, you are going to need to replenish your body's water supply at some point. Bottled water might seem more convenient in a pinch, but the personal and environmental costs of that convenience is considerable.

Riding a bicycle is not just for kids, as cycling has been linked to improved cardiovascular fitness and shown to be a great low-impact exercise for men and women with joint conditions. In addition, riding a bicycle is a great way to burn calories, even when riding at a leisurely pace. According to nutrition and fitness company NutriStrategy, a 205 lb. adult can expect to burn 372 calories during a 60-minute leisurely bike ride (less than 10 miles per hour); while the same person will burn, just 233 calories during a slow walk for the same period.

Bottled water is more expensive than tap water, and those who prefer bottled water because they think it is healthier than tap water should know that 70 percent of the bottled water produced in the United States never crosses state lines for sale, which means it is exempt from oversight by the Food and Drug Administration. Therefore, there is no guarantee that bottled water is any different from the water coming from your tap.

48

April 2014 | azhealthandliving.com

However, bottled water also hurts the environment, producing more than a ton of plastic waste each year. In addition, according to Food & Water Watch, a watchdog organization that works to ensure the water we consume is safe, the plastic used in water bottles requires 47 million gallons of oil per year to produce. A reusable water bottle is a far more eco-friendly way to stay hydrated while you exercise.

Wear recycled gear Athletes have numerous options at their disposal with regard to apparel. However, not all apparel is created equal. According to Athletes For a FITPLANET, a vast majority of technical apparel is created from polyester, a material derived from petroleum. However, many clothing manufacturers now produce apparel and gear made from recycled polyester apparel, and labels typically list whether or not a given product is made from such recycled materials. Athletes who want to go the extra mile regarding their apparel can recycle their used items when they are no longer up to snuff. Contact a local recycling center to learn about programs in your community, or visit an athletic apparel retailer and ask for their help.

J

essica Alba is a talented actress who won hearts of many with her beauty and charm. Nowadays, she is playing the part of a dedicated wife and a busy mom of two, but she has also been creating a buzz with her dedication to promoting the use of eco-friendly products. Mothers are protective by nature and Alba is no different. According to TheGuardian.com, Alba found it challenging to find products that were safe to use as an expecting mother. Her concern escalated after having an allergic reaction to a baby laundry detergent she had bought. “There's no way this is safe for a baby,” which she reports telling her mom at that time. This incident was enough to motivate Alba to research and hunt down chemical-free and transparent products for herself and for her children. TheGuardian.com also reports that Alba’s dedication to provide mothers with harmless personal and homecare products brought her to Christopher Gavigan, author of Healthy Child Healthy World and then-CEO of a nonprofit by the same name along with two other cofounders, together starting the Honest Co. “Let's educate and comfort the world and show them an authentic reality of a business, one that is incredibly transparent,” Alba tells Greenbiz.com, confirming the goal Honest Co. is trying to achieve. According to TheRecessionista.com, Honest provides a wide range of gentle products for house cleaning, health and wellness essentials for adults and babies.

“At Honest our mission is for families to have the safest and healthiest home,” Alba shares with TheRecessionista.com. Recently, Honest celebrated its two-year anniversary. TheRecessionista.com reports Alba to be enjoying the success of her new eco-friendly company as she continues working collectively with scientists, designers, and wellness gurus to provide healthier products to consumers. Alba has even gone on to publish a book, The Honest Life, which she revealed during an appearance on the TV show Ellen. The Honest life is about making environmentally healthier choices that are realistic and inexpensive.

“I always thought that being healthy or green or eco or whatever was an extreme lifestyle. I’m not a vegan, I don’t live off the grid, I don’t wear hemp every day. I don’t have time,” Alba told E! News at the book signing. Her own California home, which she shares with her husband, Cash Warren and their two blossoming daughters, for example, is an eco-palace. According to the Huffington Post, Alba has decorated the walls of her eco-friendly home without VOC paints, PVC-free vinyl chairs and even a vertical garden. The article in the Huffington Post also revealed Alba’s growing obsession with vintage furniture, as they reported seeing countless refurbished pieces decorating spaces in her home. “It felt cozy. It felt like family. And aesthetically, I knew I could do whatever I wanted with it—it was a blank canvas,” Alba adds while giving a tour to the Huffington Post crew. For a gorgeous personality like Alba, the minimalist and natural way of living is refreshing as it makes her stand out from the crowd of glamorous celebrities. Alba, is setting the trend to go green in a unique way while raising awareness on toxic products that should not be allowed in homes and on body—she is living, “ The Honest Life.” azhealthandliving.com | April 2014

Cost-Effective & Eco-friendly Home Improvements

S

ome homeowners take on a home improvement project to make their homes more eco-friendly. Such projects are often mistakenly assumed costly undertakings, but there are several cost-effective ways to make a home more eco-friendly.

Upgrade your appliances. A simple home improvement project like upgrading older appliances, including the washer and dryer, to newer, more efficient models can give a home a fresh look while reducing energy consumption. The Natural Resources Defense Council notes that today's energy-efficient refrigerators will use less than half the energy of models made as recently as 15 years ago.

Add more insulation. Adding more insulation to a home can reduce energy consumption in the winter, when the home will feel warmer and allow you to keep the thermostat at a more reasonable number.

Install high-efficiency water fixtures. Few people think about how much water they consume over the course of a typical day, but the figures might be eye opening to those who hope to adopt a more eco-friendly lifestyle. According to the United States Geological Survey's Water Science School, it is generally accepted that the average person uses between 80 and 100 gallons of water each day. Showers seem to be especially wasteful, as older showerheads might be using as much as 5 gallons per minute, or 50 gallons of water during a 10-minute shower. Today's high-efficiency low-flow showerheads can provide a strong shower stream while reducing water consumption. Such showerheads are also less taxing on your water heater, reducing your energy consumption as a result. Homeowners can also install high-efficiency toilets that use as little as 1.3 gallons of water per flush (compared to older models that consumed as many as 5 gallons per flush). The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that installing water-efficient fixtures and appliances would save more than 3 trillion gallons of water and more than $18 billion annually.

Install a programmable thermostat. Some of today's

Home improvement projects do not have to be a grand undertaking. A few minor and affordable changes may be all it takes to improve a home and benefit the environment at the same time.

programmable thermostats can record personal preferences and usage and determine the best course of action for heating and cooling your home. Temperatures can be adjusted room-by-room, and the programmable thermostat allows homeowners to control their heating and cooling while they are out of the house, ensuring they are not paying to heat or cool an empty house and wasting energy in doing so.

How Open Windows Benefit the Environment By MS

Improve indoor air quality. Indoor air pollution has

been described by the United States Environmental Protection Agency as a primary environmental health problem. Indoor air quality can be up to five times worse than outdoor air. In addition, the American College of Allergists states that 50 percent of all illnesses are caused by polluted indoor air. Because many homes are built to be airtight to conserve energy and money, unhealthy levels of air pollutants can build up inside homes when windows remain closed. These pollutants may include radon gas, cigarette smoke, chemical fumes from paints and solvents and leached chemicals from modern building and furnishing materials. Opening windows for extended periods allows fresh air to spread throughout the home. Houseplants can also filter indoor air and make it healthier to breathe.

Change Your Thoughts. Change Your Words. Change Your World. Sponsored by

Reduce energy consumption. A cool breeze entering a

home through open windows can reduce the temperature inside of a home without having to turn on fans or air conditioners. This not only helps individuals save money, but also it reduces reliance on electricity and fossil fuels. Opening several windows on opposite sides of the home can create a cross-breeze that will keep the home cool without the help of energy-guzzling appliances. Open attic vents can release hot air trapped inside the house as well.

Reduce reliance on chemical air fresheners. Fresh air

can quickly remove odors from a home. These can include old cooking smells, cigarette smoke, pet odors or simply stale air. By opening windows, homeowners can clean the air in their homes naturally without covering it up with chemical air fresheners or other cleaners.

Cut down on use of cleaning products. A home that

never gets any fresh air can quickly succumb to allergens such as dust, dander and soot, necessitating the use of vacuums and other cleaning tools and products. However, open windows can greatly reduce the buildup of such allergens, and therefore reduce reliance on appliances that guzzle energy or products that release harmful chemicals into the air. Open windows allow fresh air to flow throughout a home, improving personal health and benefiting the environment at the same time. azhealthandliving.com | April 2014

PLAN & SAVE

How to Usher Your Office into the Eco-Friendly Era

T

echnology continues to advance at a rapid pace. Despite such advancements, many professional environments are still consuming far more energy than is necessary, proving that there is still progress to be made with regard to how we use technology and protect the planet. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 30 percent of energy consumed by office buildings is used inefficiently, while the Energy Star program notes that 17 percent of greenhouse gas emissions come from commercial buildings' energy use. That leaves many opportunities for those who want to usher their offices into the eco-friendly era to make changes that will conserve energy.

Consider new lighting. Energy Star notes that lighting is

typically the most costly portion of many companies' monthly electric bills. However, flipping switches at the end of each day is not the only way business owners can cut their lighting costs. Many companies prefer to have lights on overnight for security purposes, but motion detection lighting systems are more ecofriendly and can pay for themselves over the long haul. Such systems will only turn on when movement is detected in the building. This saves owners the cost of illuminating empty offices overnight, but still enables them to protect buildings with lights in the case of break-ins.

Encourage workers to put their computers to sleep when not at their desks. Screen savers might be aesthetically appealing, but

that beauty comes at a steep price. Screen savers use the same amount of energy while you are away as the computer does while you are hard at work. The United States Department of Energy suggests that companies hoping to make their office environments more eco-friendly should encourage workers to put their computers to sleep when they will be away from their desks for 20 minutes or more. When the workday is done, workers can turn their computers off completely to save even more energy.

Reduce paper consumption. In lieu of storing hard copy

Ensuring employees turn their computers off at the end of the workday is one-way companies can become more eco-friendly.

56

documents in filing cabinets or other antiquated storing systems, companies can encourage employees to store files digitally in easily accessible folders on their computers or on company servers. Internal memos need not be printed out and distributed as hard copies when it is just as easy and far less taxing on the environment to share such memos via email.

Plug leaks. Much like homeowners can save substantial amounts

of money by plugging leaks around windows and doorways, businesses can cut energy costs by identifying and plugging leaks. In fact, the DOE estimates that taking care of air leaks can save businesses as much as 10 percent off their energy costs. Make sure air ducts and filters are routinely cleaned to ensure heating and cooling systems are operating at optimal efficiency.

The Top Five Steps to Grow Your Net Worth

By Rick Rodgers, author of The Three-Legged Stool

report released earlier this year from the Chicagobased Spectrem Group estimated there were 8.99 million households in the U.S. with a net worth of at least $1 million at the end of 2012. A contrasting report issued late last year from the American Payroll Association showed 68 percent of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. More than two-thirds of the 30,600 people surveyed said it would be somewhat difficult or very difficult if their paychecks were delayed for a week.

Is it possible for the average American to become a millionaire? American millionaires are not all greedy corporate executives. Dr. Thomas Stanley has studied the habits of wealthy people for the past 30 years. His groundbreaking research has uncovered the truth about the lifestyles of the wealthiest Americans. • Four out of five millionaires are self-made. • Many millionaires own their own business and consider themselves to be entrepreneurs. • Their companies are rarely glamorous and are more likely to be very ordinary jobs, like paving contractors and pest control businesses. Becoming a millionaire most likely does not just happen to you. Rather, it takes planning and perseverance. Here are five steps you can take to grow your net worth.

Live below your means. Unfortunately, most people never learn to spend less than they make. Unless you discipline yourself to save something from every paycheck, you will never be able to accumulate money that can work for you. The secret to living below your means is to have a budget and work your budget every month. Save a minimum of 10 percent. George Clason's

classic book, The Richest Man in Babylon, tells the story of a man who wanted to become wealthy. He started by saving 10 percent of his income and eventually became wealthy by having his money work for him. Research has shown many of today’s millionaires accumulated their wealth by saving and disciplining themselves to increase their savings every year.

Invest your savings in businesses. Your savings

should be put into growth-oriented investments. Not everyone has the desire to start and run their own business. However, we all have the opportunity to own businesses by buying stock. Stock prices can be volatile but you can minimize the volatility by owning stocks through diversified mutual funds. Investing on a regular basis allows you to take

advantage of the stock market downturns through dollar cost averaging.

Don’t follow the herd. The Great Panic of 2008 turned

out to be one of the greatest buying opportunities. Stock prices fell by more than 50 percent during this downturn and recovered to move on to new highs. Unfortunately, many investors sold their stocks during this period instead of buying as evidenced by the net redemptions of stock mutual funds, which totaled in the billions. This prompted legendary investor Warren Buffett to write in an op-ed article for the Wall Street Journal, "A simple rule dictates my buying: Be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful."

Hire a financial adviser. You often need an independent third party to remind you of your goals and help you make the right financial moves – especially during times of great uncertainty. A good financial adviser will try to help you develop a good investment strategy and keep you focused. Investors often make their biggest mistakes by allowing emotions to interfere with good judgment. A financial adviser can help you keep your emotions in check. Becoming a millionaire is not easy or there would be more of them! It takes discipline to live below your means and to save and invest. One of the millionaires interviewed by Dr. Stanley never made more than $60,000 per year. "I have accumulated most of my net worth by living below my means,” she told him. “I have everything I want, but I have learned not to want too much." azhealthandliving.com |April 2014

Ways to Catch Up On Retirement Savings

T

he virtues of saving for retirement are extolled from the moment young men and women begin their professional careers. Such advice is sound, and though retirement is a long way off from the start of one's career, those professionals who heed these words of wisdom and start saving early are bound to benefit down the road. However, even the best advice can be ignored from time to time, and many people simply do not save enough for retirement. A 2013 survey from Fidelity Investments revealed just how much financial trouble the average American is likely to be in upon retirement. The survey asked more than 2,000 participants a range of questions on topics, including their health, retirement and saving habits, and found that the average baby boomer, which includes those born between 1946 and 1964, was on track to reach just 81 percent of their retirement income needs. Those needs include food, shelter and medical care. The study also found that 40 percent of participants across all generations were saving less than 6 percent of their salaries for retirement. That is especially troubling when considering 60

April 2014 | azhealthandliving.com

financial planners often advise men and women to save 10 to 15 percent of their salaries for retirement. Some simple arithmetic and an examination of assets, including retirement accounts and savings, can shed light on how rosy or bleak a person's retirement looks. Young professionals have time to make up for their indiscretions, but men and women over 50 who have not saved enough must get to work immediately to ensure their retirement years are comfortable. The following are a handful of ways men and women can catch up on retirement savings.

Start spending less. Men and women over 50 know that the sand in their earnings hourglass is running out, and those behind on retirement savings need to make the most of their earnings in the years ahead. That means cutting out any unnecessary expenses so that money can be used to save for retirement. Examine all of your monthly and annual expenses to find ways to trim some fat. You may want to downsize your vehicle to a less expensive and more fuel-efficient make and model. Golfers can cancel their country club memberships in favor of golfing

on more affordable public courses that do not charge hefty annual membership fees. Slashing spending will not be easy, but doing so is the first step toward catching up on your retirement savings.

Contribute more to your employer-sponsored retirement plan. If you have not been contributing the maximum amount to your employer-sponsored retirement plan, start doing so. This is especially beneficial if your employer matches your contributions. Contributing more to such plans should not drastically affect your take-home pay now if the plan is a pretax plan like a 401(k).

Make IRA catch-up contributions. The Internal Revenue Service allows men and women over the age of 50 to make annual catch-up contributions up to $5,500. These contributions must be made to a retirement plan via elective deferrals, and there are additional requirements as well. Men and women over 50 interested in making catchup contributions to their retirement accounts can learn more at www.irs.gov. “Studies have shown that men and women are simply not saving enough to finance their retirement. However, there are a myriad of ways for those more than 50 to start catching up.”

“Enhance Your Practice With Essential Oils” Nurture the body’s natural ability to heal itself and thrive through the power of essential oils.

Put more in traditional savings accounts. Though it is best to put as much money into tax-advantaged accounts, if you are already maxing out your contributions to such accounts, it is still good to sock away money into a traditional taxable savings account. It is unwise to expect your retirement accounts to fully fund your lifestyle in retirement, so you will need, or at least want, a substantial amount of money in savings. The benefit here is the money you put into traditional savings accounts has already been taxed so you will not incur any bills from the taxman once you begin to use that money down the road.

Postpone retirement. Though it is not ideal for men and women with a target retirement date in mind, postponing the day you call it quits is another way to catch up on retirement savings. Postponing retirement allows you to build a more substantial retirement portfolio while also decreasing the amount of time you will need to rely on that money. This gives you more flexibility in retirement. In addition, Americans who work longer can increase their Social Security benefit because working longer should allow them to delay the day they start taking Social Security payments. Men and women who can wait until age 70 to accept such payments will receive larger monthly payments as a result.

Yoga for Older Adults Health benefits

Y

oga is big business, attracting more people each year. Designed to promote physical and mental health, yoga has helped millions of people across the globe control their stress and improve their flexibility, and studies have shown that yoga is only growing in popularity. According to a study conducted by the Harris Interactive Service Bureau, roughly 20 million Americans practiced yoga in 2012, marking a 29 percent increase from just four years earlier. While some men and women over 50 may feel their time to take up yoga has passed, nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, yoga can pay numerous dividends for the over 50 crowd.

Helps alleviate high blood pressure. High blood pressure is

a potentially dangerous condition that makes the heart work harder to pump blood to the body. High blood pressure contributes to a hardening of the arteries known as atherosclerosis, and can even contribute to the development of heart failure. A person's risk of developing high blood pressure increases with age. A normal blood pressure is 120 over 80, but people with high blood pressure often have blood pressure readings of 140/90 and above. Studies have shown that yoga can reduce the top number, referred to as the systolic blood pressure. In a study published in the Journal of Clinical Hypertension, researchers found that men and women who practiced yoga for six hours a week for 11 weeks reduced their systolic blood pressure by 33 points.

Helps maintain healthy weight. While yoga may not help

men and women shed weight as effectively as a more vigorous activity, it can help them maintain healthy weight. Many men and women over 50 find vigorous or strenuous physical activity too demanding, and might not be able to perform such activities with the frequency necessary to prevent weight gain. However, while yoga is physically demanding, those who practice yoga often find it takes a smaller toll on their bodies than more traditional strength training. Another way yoga can help to maintain a healthy weight is through its relation to stress. Yoga can also help to relieve stress, and lower stress levels reduce the likelihood that men and women will overeat, which is a common response to elevated stress levels.

Promotes strong bones. Osteoporosis is a medical condition

Though yoga might not have been popular when today's men and women over 50 were in their 20s and 30s, this does not mean they cannot take advantage of the numerous physical and mental benefits yoga has to offer.

62

April 2014 | azhealthandliving.com

in which tissue loss leads to brittle and fragile bones. Aging is a significant risk factor for osteoporosis, and women are at even greater risk than men are. The National Osteoporosis Foundation notes that women can lose up to 20 percent of their bone mass in the five to seven years after menopause. Yoga is a weight-bearing exercise; it forces practitioners to hold the weight of their bodies up against gravity. This resistance to gravity puts mild stress on the bones, which respond by laying down new bone growth. However, unlike other weight-bearing activities yoga does not damage cartilage or put stress on the joints.

Moving is the best medicine. Keeping active and losing weight are just two of the ways that you can fight osteoarthritis pain. In fact, for every pound you lose, that’s four pounds less pressure on each knee. For information on managing pain, go to fightarthritispain.org.

Look No Further! Relief is right here in Arizona Dr. Kukurin was named a Top Chiropractor by the Consumers Research Council of America. He is listed in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare. With over 20 years of experience using acupuncture, chiropractic and science based nutritional therapies, the results produced by our methods have been featured on local TV newscasts, published in scientific journals, indexed in the National Library of Medicine and have been presented Knee Pain at medical conferences at Johns Hopkins and the Peripheral Nerve Society.

Diabetic Neuropathy, Peripheral Neuropathy Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, Plantar Fasciitis If you are suffering from lower back, buttocks and or leg pain or your feet or legs are cramping, numb or burning especially at night, you almost certainly have a condition which involves the nerves of the legs. The largest nerve in the body, the sciatic nerve (pictured in red to the right), starts in the lower back, runs through the muscles of the buttocks and down to the tip of the toes. If this nerve gets irritated, you can experience really terrible pain anywhere along the course of the nerve. You may also experience burning, numbness and odd sensations in your muscles. Irritation of this nerve may produce severe cramping or crawling sensations in your muscles.

Headaches, Vertigo, TMJ, Migraines, Sinus Headache Neck and Shoulder Pain, Pinched Nerves, Tennis Elbow and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Spinal Stenosis, Sciatica, Lower Back, Hip and Leg Pain

So how do you find results? The answer is called Integrative Neurology. Neurology is the study of the nerves. This allows us to diagnose tough nerve conditions like spinal stenosis, disc problems and neuropathy. What happens next truly separates our integrative neurology approach from anything else available to help correct lower back, hip, leg and foot problems. We have pioneered techniques to decompress nerves, but also use a number of natural substances that have been shown in recent scientific studies to help nerves re-grow and repair. There are no current drugs that can do this. But that’s not all. We combine special electrical stimulation techniques with acupuncture. A combination that has been shown to correct abnormal nerve function and promote nerve repair. There simply is no better or more comprehensive system for diagnosing and correcting the cause of spinal stenosis, neuropathy and other conditions that cause lower back, hip and leg pain and numbness.

Of course, your back and leg pain can be caused by a pinched nerve in your lower back. This can be from a vertebra that is out of place, it can be caused by a slipped disc or it can be caused by spinal stenosis or any combination of these problems. Each of these conditions, bad discs, spinal stenosis or displaced vertebrae have very different treatments.
