"I did my research online for the practices in Arizona that offer varicose vein removal. I knew I wanted the EVLT treatment and wanted the procedure done by a Physician, not a cosmetic place. I narrowed it down to three Physicians and chose Dr. Sharma for his experience. I could not be more pleased with my experience at Arizona Vein & Laser Institute. Dr. Sharma is a wonderful physician. As he is performing the procedure, he explains what he is doing and is so concerned about making you feel comfortable. As for his staff, I cannot say enough good words. One thing I have learned in my lifetime is that your employees are only as good as you are. Dr. Sharma, you have a wonderful staff which says alot about you as an employer. I spent many office visits with them and every time they were pleasant, caring and professional. I was impressed by the way they worked as a team with Dr. Sharma. Thank you so much!" Joy A.
"I had called your office on a Monday morning to see if I could be fit in for an appointment as soon as possible because of a complication I had over the weekend. Being a new patient and never being seen at your office before it didn't matter because the woman who answered was not only kind, friendly and sypmathetic of my situation, but she was able to fit me in that very same afternoon. I have to say how incredibly impressed I was with the entire staff at this office but even more so with Dr. Sharma and Dr. Hecht. Their bedside manners are second to none. Thank you!" Scott Schrimp
NORTH PHOENIX Charles I. Hecht M.D., FACS Dr. Hecht received his M.D. degree from State University of New York Upstate Medical University. He did his residency in General Surgery at Ohio State University Hospital. He has performed major surgeries at the area hospitals for over 25 years before joining Arizona Vein & Laser Institute to dedicate to the treatment of venous disease.

Want Luscious Lips This Valentine's Day? A specialized art, not your basic Lip Service
Thanks to Kylie Jenner, lip augmentation has become more popular than ever. Many women want full lush lips, while others are afraid of looking overdone. Fortunately, with the right injector and product, you can achieve the look you desire, whether it is augmenting your lips for a fuller look or restoring your lips to their natural shape before the aging process took over. With aging our lips atrophy and wrinkle leaving a shriveled appearance complete with harsh radiating lip lines. Utilizing dermal fillers, such as Juvederm, the lip's volume can be restored. Lip lines, also known as smoker's lines, can be addressed with fillers, like Volbella, which was specifically created for lip lines. Whatever your goal, you can achieve the look when you partner with a qualified provider who can help you understand your own lip anatomy and the art of augmentation. Lip relationship or ratio of upper or lower lip size. The general societal eye prefers a lower lip larger than upper lip or what we call infer lip. Some people do however have a natural ratio of Supre lip (upper lip larger), or Par (equal upper to lower ratio). It is important to maintain the natural ratio of the patient’s lips by augmenting or replacing volume to reflect what naturally enhances a woman’s facial structure and natural beauty. When significant volume loss has occurred due to aging, or dealing with a naturally very thin lip, photos from youthful years and or magazine pictures may be used to understand what the patient is looking for.

Lip Shape. Often patients will bring in magazine photos with lip shapes completely contradictory to their natural shape. Again discussion and realistic expectations must occur before augmentation begins. In the past few years augmentation is all over the board with attempts to change natural lip shape, leading to the platypus lip, or sausage lips! Preserving the lateral shape in relation to the central shape maintains a youthful, natural, pretty shape. Over augmentation of the central or lateral aspects of the lip will always look unnatural and forced. Lip Contour and Volume. Probably the most important component of lip augmentation, this is the look from a patient’s profile, and volume. The vermillion border is the thin piping outlining the lip and should be thin not overfilled to look duck-like. Correcting this also improves radiating lip lines. How the light hits the lip from afar should reflect on the upper central border, and lower lip reflection should be lower central. Overfilling will deflect the light to other areas and look filled or like a duck. A very natural lip can absolutely be achieved when remembering these components and applying the art of the augmentation. Women should consult with providers before committing and feel comfortable with their decision. Pain can be avoided with numbing so treat yourself this Valentine’s Day to youthful natural looking lips.

Relief is right here in the West Valley Dr. Kukurin was named a Top Chiropractor by the Consumers Research Council of America. He is listed in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare. With over 20 years of experience using acupuncture, chiropracticand science based nutritional therapies, the results produced by our methods have been featured on local TV newscasts, published in scientific journals, indexed in the National Library of Medicine and have been presented Knee Pain at medical conferences at Johns Hopkins and the Peripheral Nerve Society.
Diabetic Neuropathy, Peripheral Neuropathy Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, Plantar Fasciitis If you are suffering from lower back, buttocks and or leg pain or your feet or legs are cramping, numb or burning especially at night, you almost certainly have a condition which involves the nerves of the legs. The largest nerve in the body, the sciatic nerve (pictured in red to the right), starts in the lower back, runs through the muscles of the buttocks and down to the tip of the toes. If this nerve gets irritated, you can experience really terrible pain anywhere along the course of the nerve. You may also experience burning, numbness and odd sensations in your muscles. Irritation of this nerve may produce severe cramping or crawling sensations in your muscles. Of course, your back and leg pain can be caused by a pinched nerve in your lower back. This can be from a vertebra that is out of place, it can be caused by a slipped disc or it can be caused by spinal stenosis or any combination of these problems. Each of these conditions, bad discs, spinal stenosis or displaced vertebrae have very different treatments. Knowing exactly why you have your back and leg troubles is absolutely essential for effective care.
Headaches, Vertigo, TMJ, Migraines, Sinus Headache Neck and Shoulder Pain, Pinched Nerves, Tennis Elbow and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Spinal Stenosis, Sciatica, Lower Back, Hip and Leg Pain
So how do you find results? The answer is called Integrative Neurology. Neurology is the study of the nerves. This allows us to diagnose tough nerve conditions like spinal stenosis, disc problems and neuropathy. What happens next truly separates our integrative neurology approach from anything else available to help correct lower back, hip, leg and foot problems. We have pioneered techniques to decompress nerves, but also use a number of natural substances that have been shown in recent scientific studies to help nerves re-grow and repair. There are no current drugs that can do this. But that’s not all. We combine special electrical stimulation techniques with acupuncture. A combination that has been shown to correct abnormal nerve function and promote nerve repair. There simply is no better or more comprehensive system for diagnosing and correcting the cause of spinal stenosis, neuropathy and other conditions that cause lower back, hip and leg pain and numbness. SENIOR LIVING 60-63 Aging Well 'I Do,' Take Two: Guide to a Second Marriage; How Seniors Can Simplify Everyday Tasks; Three Ways to Talk with Aging Parents About Finances
Together We Can Make a Difference...
Make God Your Top Priority! “Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.” ~ Psalm 15:1-2 Welcome to February issue. Nowadays, many live hurried lives, while trying to meet the demands of relationships and commitments, there is seldom time left for thinking about anything else.
Proverbs 3:5-6
However, there is only one commitment and relationship that should be put FIRST—Our relationship with God. I believe the righteous choice is always the one which puts our relationship with God first.
Romans 8:28
How can we interact righteously with others or fulfill our commitments if we are not placing God FIRST?
Isaiah 41:10
We cannot be both selfish and righteous! God knows our needs—be right with God and everything will fall into place…“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you,” Matthew 6:33. What is a right relationship with God? God’s will for us is to know him. No good works without knowing Him accomplishes his will! “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me,” John 5:39. When the objective of our lives is a right relationship with God we open the doors to all the blessings He has in store for us. Here are some Bible verses to encourage and guide you:
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose. Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
Romans 8:31-32
What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He that spared not His own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?
Psalm 34:17-19
The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth Him out of them all. Until next time, Wishing you and yours a Happy Valentine's Day filled with many blessings!
1 Peter 5:6-7
Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon Him; for he careth for you.
God Bless You for Your Support!

Tempe Empty Bowls
“Ending hunger in Tempe one bowl at a time” Thousands of Tempe-area elementary and high school area students, as well as local artists, are in the process of creating unique clay bowls and other pottery to help raise money for the hungry in the community. They’re working as part of this year’s two-day Tempe Empty Bowls event, happening February 24 and 25. Since 2002, the Tempe Empty Bowls organization has held an annual event that has raised more than $175,000 for two local feeding programs. At the event, a $10 purchase of a handcrafted bowl, complete with a simple meal of soup and bread provided by Whole Foods Market and NCounter, raises money to benefit Tempe Community Action Agency and United Food Bank. Last year more than $16,000 was raised. An estimated 36,000 people in Tempe live in poverty and represent 23 percent of the city’s residents. Twenty-seven years ago, a high school art teacher in Michigan came up with an original idea for helping his students find a way to raise funds to support a food drive. His class made ceramic bowls for a fundraising meal. Guests were served a simple meal of soup and bread in return for a donation, and were invited to keep the bowl as a lasting reminder of hunger in the world. By the following year, the idea evolved into Empty Bowls, a project to provide support for food banks, soup kitchens and other organizations that fight hunger. Since then, Empty Bowls events have been held throughout the world, raising millions of dollars to combat hunger. The first Tempe Empty Bowls took place in 2002, after nearly a year of planning. The founders of this local effort were members of faith organizations who wanted to put their beliefs about compassion for the poor into action. Tempe
Community Council helped as the early programs were developed. They brought on board Tempe Union High School District, the City of Tempe, and Tempe Elementary to the annual effort. “The purchase of bowls and other ceramic items available at Tempe Empty Bowls directly impact members of our community who are struggling to feed their families,” says Connie Schultejans, director of Tempe Empty Bowls. The 2017 Tempe Empty Bowls event will be held each day from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., at 6th Street Park (just south of City Hall in Downtown Tempe) on Friday, February 24 and at the Community Center Courtyard, 3500 S. Rural Road, between the Tempe Public Library and Vihel Center on Saturday, February 25. “We’re so thankful for the support from Tempe Empty Bowls,” says Deborah Arteaga, executive director of Tempe Community Action Agency (TCAA). “Food insecurity has the greatest impact on our most vulnerable populations – seniors and children. TCAA’s food pantry distributed enough food for more than 1 million meals last year and these funds go a long way in helping us keep our shelves stocked and keep food on the tables of people most in need.”

Ginny Hildebrand, president and CEO of United Food Bank says, “Last year United Food Bank provided more than 1 million pounds of food to our 15 partner agencies in Tempe. We are blessed to be a part of Tempe Empty Bowls.” Not only does the organization raise funds, Tempe Empty Bowls also works to educate local students about hunger in the community. Local volunteer and educator Dan Abbott visits each participating high schools to share with them stories of hunger right in our own backyard, bringing what they do to have even greater significance.
“Many kids in the Tempe area just aren’t aware that some of their classmates and friends could be going hungry. In Tempe, one in three kids live in poverty, making it challenging for their parents to get a meal on the table every day,” says Abbott. “This program is an excellent hands-on way to teach kids about getting involved in an issue.”

Margaret Anderson Gives Back to Children’s & Women’s Charities From military brat and devoted ranch hand to officer’s wife and owner of JetSetElite (JSE), Margaret Anderson’s life has taken her many places. She devotes her efforts to local causes and organizations, and recently became a board member for Southwest Kids’ Cancer Foundation. Anderson was born in Corpus Christi, Texas at the Naval Air Station Hospital while her father was deployed and serving in Vietnam and her mother and siblings were staying with her grandparents in South Texas. She spent her childhood and young adulthood wherever her father was stationed, stateside or overseas. “My home base became my grandparent’s cattle ranch in South Texas,” Anderson says. “I loved spending time with them and would beg my parents to let me spend summers with them. Life on the ranch, and being part of the ranching community was fun, and every day was a new adventure.” While there, she learned small town traditional values and the importance of hard work, commitment to family, and how to be resourceful, supportive and personally accountable. Anderson explains, as a military brat, “I learned idealism, loyalty, patriotism, honesty, anti-racism, discipline and respect for God and country. When you are raised in a community where everyone knows your family, you understand how you contribute to that community in a positive, productive manner.” “I came to Arizona 30 years ago when my then-husband was stationed here. I went from officer’s kid to officer’s wife,” Anderson says. “At the time, I had my business degree from UT Austin and fell into the hospitality industry after obtaining a position at Canyon Ranch.” While there, she learned 5-star service and the ideals of high-level client relationships. “I then started working on a hotel management degree. That was the beginning of my lifelong involvement with concierge services and private client management.” “When I left Canyon Ranch in 1990, clients would reach out to me for lifestyle management services, including coordinating luxury travel, private events, hospitality services, and emergency air medical transportation,” Anderson explains. “That was the beginning of JetSetElite and we officially became JSE/DMC - Destination Management Services Company during Super Bowl XLIX as DMC providers for the Super Bowl Host Committee.” “The philanthropic division of JSE evolved when clients would ask for assistance with personal charitable foundations 18 February 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
and corporate social responsibility development for their companies,” Anderson explains. “I would research and vet charitable foundations that were in line with their personal values and corporate culture and manage strategic partnerships and charitable events.” On a personal level, Anderson says, “I lost my oldest son to a tragic accident a few years ago and I feel compelled to volunteer my efforts and time to children’s charities and causes that support women. I know that I am honoring my son by making a small difference in the life of a child or advocating for women who need help.” That is the mission and values she carries into her service at various nonprofits. Since moving to Scottsdale 25 years ago, Anderson has been involved in charitable causes in the community, supporting friends with their charitable efforts and serving on school boards. She has served on the board of the Major League Baseball RBI program in Phoenix. Anderson states, “The RBI program is youth initiative that provides young people from underserved and diverse communities with the opportunity to play baseball and softball, encourage academic success, and teach important life lessons.” “I also serve on the GoRed for Women of Phoenix Ambassador Board to help educate women and advocate for heart disease prevention through speaking engagements,” she adds. “I will continue to share my resources, experience and expertise to help charitable foundations in our community.”

The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST), invented and patented by John Chao, DDS, MADG, is a scalpel-free, suture-free procedure for correcting gum recession. During the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique™, a needle is used to make a small hole in the patient’s existing gum tissue. Through this pinhole, special instruments are used to gently loosen the gum tissue. These tools help expand and slide the gumline to cover the exposed root structure. There are no grafts, no sutures, and no incisions needed with the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique™. It simply involves the adjustment of the existing tissue. Dr. Chang and Dr. Svans were two of the first dentists in Arizona and the United States trained and certified as Pinhole Surgical Technique™ Providers. PREVENT
By MS
Atrial Fibrillation: Symptoms & Risk Factors In late 2013, the World Health Organization released results from a data analysis that examined atrial fibrillation and its prevalence across the globe. The results were troubling, indicating that 33.5 million people worldwide have the condition. If those figures don't raise an eyebrow, that's likely because few people are familiar with atrial fibrillation, in spite of its prevalence. A broader understanding of atrial fibrillation, often referred to as AF, may help people reduce their likelihood of developing the condition.
What is atrial fibrillation? The National Heart, Lung
and Blood Institute notes that atrial fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia, which is a problem with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat. AF occurs when rapid, disorganized electrical signals cause the heart's two upper chambers, known as the atria, to contract very quickly and irregularly.
What happens when a person has atrial fibrillation?
The heart is not functioning properly when a person has atrial fibrillation. That's because blood pools in the atria when a person has AF, and because of that pooling, the blood is not pumped completely into the heart's two lower chambers, which are known as the ventricles. As a result, the heart's upper and lower chambers do not work in conjunction as they do when the heart is fully healthy.
Are there symptoms of atrial fibrillation? Some people
with AF do not feel symptoms and only learn of their condition after physical examinations. That highlights the importance of scheduling annual physicals for all people, but especially for people with a personal or family history of heart trouble. According to the American Heart Association, the most common symptom of AF is a quivering or fluttering heartbeat, which is caused by abnormal firing of electrical impulses. Anyone who feels such a symptom or suspects their heartbeat is abnormal should consult a physician immediately. In addition to a quivering or fluttering heartbeat, the AHA notes that people with AF may experience one or more of the following symptoms: General fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath and anxiety, weakness, faintness or confusion, fatigue when exercising, sweating and chest pain or pressure. The AHA warns that people experiencing chest pain or pressure are having a medical emergency that requires immediate medical attention. Whether or not symptoms of AF are detected, the condition can still increase a person's risk for serious medical problems, including stroke. 30 February 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
Who is at risk for atrial fibrillation? No one is immune to atrial fibrillation, though risk of developing the condition rises as a person ages. Men are more likely than women to develop AF, which the NHLBI notes is more common among whites than African Americans or Hispanic Americans. People suffering from hyperthyroidism, a condition characterized by excessive amounts of the thyroid hormone, are at greater risk for AF than those without the condition. In addition, people who are obese and those who have been diagnosed with diabetes or lung disease are at greater risk for AF than those without such conditions. The NHLBI also notes that AF is more common in people who have: High blood pressure, coronary heart disease, heart failure, rheumatic heart disease, structural heart defects, pericarditis and congenital heart defects.
Can atrial fibrillation be prevented? There is no
guaranteed way to prevent AF, though certain lifestyle choices can reduce a person's risk for the condition. A heart-healthy diet that's low in cholesterol, saturated fat, and trans fat and also includes daily servings of various whole grains, fruits, and vegetables can lower a person's risk for AF. Daily physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight and not smoking also can lower a person's risk. Atrial fibrillation is a rising threat across the globe. More information about AF can be found at www.heart.org.
How to Encourage Kids to Take Care of Their Teeth By MS
Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene. While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care.
Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids' teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child's routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a soft-bristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child's first birthday. Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents' actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids' level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don't even realize they're cleaning away.
Involve kids in choosing their dental care products.
While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child's pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing.
Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do.

CONNECT WITHIN
MIND, BODY & spirIT By Gabriella van Rij, a kindness activist and author of Watch Your Delivery, www.gabriella.global
Making Kindness an Everyday Habit When Lady Gaga recently told her fans that kindness – not wealth and fame – is what creates harmony in the world she may have been on to something. Research has shown that being kind makes us happier and also is contagious, inspiring others to be kind as well. For example, one such study published in the Journal of Social Psychology linked performing acts of kindness to an increase in life satisfaction. Making kindness a habit changes lives – your own life and others. We’re born with innate kindness, but we’ve just forgotten about it because we’re always running. We’re just too busy doing other things and we need to remind ourselves to be kind. We as a society have dropped the ball on human kindness and it’s time we picked it back up. We are all born with innate kindness, but then the hand that feeds us or the environment makes us abandon it pretty fast. By the time we are five, we have learned to compete and to strive for success. It’s time for a new measuring stick for success. By following this four-step process, people can put a little more kindness in the world and quickly fall into the habit of committing kindness every day:
Be kind to yourself. It’s hard to have the patience to be kind to others if we can’t even take the time to be kind to ourselves. This might seem selfish, but it’s not. By being kind to ourselves, we shape our attitude toward others.
Answer rudeness with kindness. This one is difficult. When someone is rude to you, the first thing you do is instantly react and not always in a positive way. And the second thing you do is say it’s about me. They were nasty to me. However, it’s not about you, it’s about the emotion. By answering rudeness with kindness, you diffuse the situation and there’s also a certain satisfaction in seeing the change in the attitude of the person who was rude.
Watch your delivery. The tone that accompanies your words is as important as what you are saying. Do you need to soften your tone? Does what you say sound more aggressive than what you mean? Body language also can send a message you didn’t intend, so be aware of your body language and your facial expressions. 32 February 2017| azhealthandliving.com
Acknowledge kindness when you see it. When you
acknowledge the kind acts you see that person will be encouraged to continue to spread kindness. Acknowledging kindness in others also will serve as a reminder to you about how you can show kindness. Unfortunately, one of the reasons we don’t always treat each other well is that we are a fear-based society, and fear only breeds more fear. But luckily, there is an antidote because just as fear breeds more fear, I believe kindness grows more kindness.
Make Every Anniversary Count By MS
Wedding anniversaries provide opportunities for couples to reflect and relive the excitement of their wedding days. Anniversaries can easily be forgotten amid the hustle and bustle of daily life, but many couples are making concerted efforts to ensure their anniversaries are celebrated as the special occasions they are. A first wedding anniversary is a special one. Some couples celebrate their first anniversaries by enjoying a piece of wedding cake that has been properly preserved in the freezer. Couples may also dance to their wedding songs or enjoy a nice dinner at a favorite restaurant. The first anniversary also is a time to pull out the wedding video or photo album and reminisce about the wedding day. Anniversaries are a great way for couples to celebrate their time together by stepping away from emails, text messages, work obligations, and even mundane everyday tasks to once again remember a day and moment that changed their lives forever. Those who may need a little inspiration celebrating their anniversaries can consider these suggestions.
Have dinner at your reception site. Find out if the
reception site, which may be a catering hall or restaurant, serves dinner or brunch. Make a reservation and enjoy celebrating in the spot where the memories all began.
Take a second honeymoon. Honor wedding memories by booking a second honeymoon at a special location.
Throw a party. Use your anniversary as an excuse to have friends or family over for a party. Be sure to include your wedding song on the music playlist.
Create a romantic evening. Rekindle the romance by pulling out all the stops, complete with a nice home cooked meal, candles and mood music. azhealthandliving.com |February 2017

Spider veins are typically a progressive condition that worsens over time. If they are not treated, your spider veins are likely to grow and cause more noticeable symptoms as you age. Untreated spider veins can sometimes lead to rashes or skin ulcers and soft tissue infections in the lower extremities. While varicose veins appear primarily on the legs, spider veins can also appear on the face, causing cosmetic concerns about their visibility. Spider veins can sometimes be an indication of other medical conditions or venous disease. Although smaller than varicose veins, spider veins can still cause cosmetic concerns or uncomfortable symptoms. Q. How do I know if I have gallstones and if medical treatment is necessary?
Q. How can Sports Vision Training improve my athletic performance?
A. The gallbladder is a storage place for bile A. More than 90% of an athlete’s performance which is a liquid produced in the liver. After eating fats, as your body begins the digestive process, your gallbladder contracts and pushes the stored bile into the common bile duct, which brings the liquid to your small intestine to aid digestion. Gallstones form when the liquid bile hardens and changes to hard pieces of stone-like material, which then can block the gallbladder from emptying or cause a blockage within the common bile duct causing symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, or what is often called a gallbladder attack.
Other symptoms may include constant heartburn, abdominal pain and bloating after you eat, or pain radiating to your back or right shoulder. Some people will experience fever, chills, yellowing of the skin and eyes, dark color urine and gray color stools. Severe pain attacks or constant pain that interferes with your daily life may mean that surgery is the best option. There are now very minimally invasive surgical procedures available for gallbladder removal. These methods typically mean you will not have to stay in the hospital overnight, you will recover quicker, and you will have little to no scarring. It is critical to seek medical treatment to ensure the gallbladder is removed before it ruptures.

is guided by the visual system—your eyes first have to instruct your hands and body what to do. Strong visual skills are critical to sports success. Even with excellent talent, coaching and practice, sports performance can be below potential with an inefficient visual system Signs of undetected visual problems in athletes include: over- or underestimating the distance of the ball; difficulty making a specific shot, pass or play; performance not up to potential or drops over time, even with added practice; and performance differs at night versus day. The good news is that with today’s innovative technologies, weaknesses in visual skills essential to peak performance can be identified and enhanced. Optometrists work with athletes to identify visual inefficiencies and develop individualized sports vision training programs to improve areas affecting their game. Sport-specific vision training can successfully improve eye-hand coordination, depth perception, visual reaction time, peripheral awareness, eye teaming, focusing and tracking, and visualization skills. The difference between an average athlete and an elite athlete can be the difference in their visual ability. By improving visual ability with vision training, athletic performance can be advanced. Q. Can sleep-disordered breathing cause inability to concentrate in children? A. Sleep-disordered breathing in children can result from swollen tonsils and/or adenoids, malocclusion (misalignment of the teeth) or swollen nasal passages. Children who suffer from sleep-disordered breathing do not sleep well at night. Often, they cannot enter REM sleep because they are unable to get into a deep sleep without their body forcing them awake when their airway becomes obstructed. As the body drifts to sleep, the airway relaxes. A healthy airway should not relax, but if the child has swollen tonsils or nasal problems, this relaxation can obstruct the airway and breathing causing the brain to wake up the body, resulting in excessive tiredness, and decreased concentration. Sleep-disordered breathing in children may manifest as strange positions while sleeping (such as hanging their head off the edge of the bed or propping it up on pillows in order to be in the right position to breathe), overall crabbiness, headaches, difficulty waking, and/or bedwetting. It may also manifest itself as trouble concentrating— sometimes-serious conditions like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). However, not every child who has trouble concentrating is automatically suffering from ADHD. Trouble concentrating can be caused by everything from immaturity to a short attention span. Nevertheless, diagnoses of ADHD have risen exponentially in the last few years, as has the prescription of such drugs as Ritalin. Sleep-disordered breathing is just another possibility to look at when trying to find the underlying cause of your child’s inability to concentrate. –Dr. Croft Vistancia Orthodontics 623.566.0800 azhealthandliving.com | February 2017

Q. What is Tickle Lipo and how do I Q. What forms of cancer are known to affect dogs and cats? What causes know it’s for me? it? How can it be diagnosed? A. We all know that a healthy diet and exercise program can help us with initial A. Cancers that commonly affect dogs weight loss, but there are always those few problem areas that seem near impossible to get rid of. Plastic surgery and liposuction are options available for weight loss transformation. If you have succeeded in losing weight, but have specific areas of problem fat, the Tickle Lipo procedure is a great choice. What is Tickle Lipo? Tickle Lipo is done under local anesthesia, which is a less invasive, faster form of liposuction that uses a heat-free, laser-free oscillating wand to safely and easily remove excess fat from the body with less blood loss and faster healing. Is Tickle Lipo right for me? Dermacare Cosmetic Surgery recommends this FDA-approved liposuction procedure for patients who want to quickly remove fat and sculpt specific problem areas, such as thighs, hips, buttocks, stomach, love handles, arms, and back. How soon will I see results after Tickle Lipo? You will see immediate results. In the days following your procedure, the results will become even more enhanced as you continue to heal and tone.
include lymphoma, mast cell tumor, soft tissue sarcoma, bladder cancer, bone cancer, spleen cancer, melanoma and mammary cancer. Lymphoma, squamous cell carcinoma (skin, mouth and nose), and fibrosarcoma commonly affect cats. In many cases, it is impossible to determine the exact cause(s) for cancer development. The observation that certain dog breeds are predisposed to certain forms of cancer supports a genetic cause. Environmental factors, such as diet and lifestyle, may also play a role. Spaying and neutering can decrease the risk for certain forms of cancer in dogs and cats. A physical examination, radiographs, CT scan, ultrasound imaging, and MRI are commonly used diagnostic modalities. A veterinary pathologist may need to have a biopsy taken to look at the cells to arrive at a definitive diagnosis. Q. What is kyphoplasty and am I a candidate?
Q. What can I do to get a good night’s sleep?
Q. How do I find someone to inject Botox or Dermal Fillers?
A. Sometimes as we age, our bones become thin, resulting in osteoporosis. When this happens, the vertebral bodies that make up the spinal column become fragile and weak. Compression fractures can result from this, causing increased pain and debilitation. In addition, these fractures create a forward curvature in your mid back area that pushes you to lean forward, changing your center of gravity. A procedure available that can help correct this, and almost instantly reduce the pain you are experiencing if the compression fracture is new, is Kyphoplasty.
A. It is a new year and we all want to make positive changes in our lives. Making healthy food choices and getting enough restorative sleep should be on our to-do list. Adequate rest will make us happier so we can have more fun and better enjoy our family, neighbors, co-workers and friends.
A. With the growing popularity of injectables, many medical professionals have jumped on the bandwagon. There are three key factors in choosing an injector: first, what is the experience, training, and talent of the individual; next, is there an on-site medical doctor; and finally the price.
Poor sleep creates many negative issues that can arise, including impaired judgement, weight gain, low immunity, poor memory and aging skin. One in five accidents is caused by drowsy drivers with a slower reaction time. Lack of sleep also gives you more risk for heart issues, diabetes, cancer and other health related conditions.
Before your appointment, do your homework about the facility and the individual. Do they offer a free consultation? How long has the person been injecting, what is their medical or aesthetic training? Do they seek out advanced training? What other services do they provide (how much time is spent injecting)? The answers will help to gauge their proficiency in the art of injecting and ensure you get the results you want.
Kyphoplasty is an innovative way to improve pain from the compression fracture and promotes restoration of the vertebral body. This is now available to be done in the outpatient setting, if your physician feels that you are a good candidate. Under X-ray guidance, the compression fractures are identified, and through a needle, a balloon is inflated and medical grade cement is placed. Once the cement has solidified, often the pain will be reduced and function and mobility will be restored. This is a fairly low-risk procedure that can help dramatically improve your quality of life. In addition to treating osteoporotic compression fractures, it can be utilized for traumatic compression fractures. A physician knowledgeable in this area can discuss with you if you are a candidate or not.

Some suggestions for a better night sleep include: Shut off all devices at least an hour before bed, take a warm shower, write down things to deal with tomorrow and slow even breathing will help relax you. Limit caffeine to early in the day. A dark, cool room and a regular bedtime schedule will help regulate your body to get your 7 to 9 hours. In addition to these tips, you can try other options, such as a sleep bracelet.
– Donna Swartz www.sleepimproved.com
If a physician isn't doing the injections, ensure the individual is an R.N. working under the direct supervision of an on-site M.D. As more non-aesthetic/dermatologist facilities offer injectables, there’s been a rise in serious complications. You want to choose someone with the proper medical training and experience to deal with the rare but real risks of complications. Price is often a driver for selecting a provider but should only be a part of your decision. Price is a combination of the cost of the product plus the experience and skill of the injector. An extremely low price should be a red flag of either counterfeit or low-quality products or a newbie to the field that is trying to build a client base.

Q. Why should I advertise my business? A. No matter how wonderful your service or product is, if you don't advertise, nobody will know. The goal of advertising should be to cost effectively reach the largest audience possible to attract new patients/ customers. If done correctly, advertising can be a wonderful investment; if done poorly, advertising can become financially draining.
Here are four tips to start a successful advertising plan:
1. Go after your target audience; in the right places! No product or service will appeal to everyone. Do research to understand who your audience is and determine what they read, watch and listen to. Find your market and be everything you can be to that audience. 2. Highlight your competitive advantage; what makes you unique? Find your competitive edge. Too many ads highlight all the features and services and fail to sell their specific benefits. Unless you highlight these benefits, how can you deliver value to potential patients/customers? 3. Establish your image. You have a car full of hungry kids and there are only two places to stop for lunch; you recognize the McDonald’s arches but you have never heard of the other place. Where will you stop? Image counts; don’t lose a chance to make an impression. 4. You have to spend money to make money. Advertising is not the place to cut corners. Doing so affects the bottom line. Successful advertising may cost some money, but that is because it works. – Great Central Sun Media Group 602.335.0771 advertise@azhealthandliving.com

BE PRESENT
RELATIONSHIPS & PARENTING By Justin Lavelle, social media and blog content director for www.beenverified.com
How Do You Know When Prince Charming Is Actually Prince Alarming? When you hear someone say that they met their significant other online, you wouldn’t think twice, as online dating is one of the leading ways singles meet potential suitors. Although it’s commonplace to meet people online, there are always risks associated with dating people you don’t know. You might end up connecting with someone who has a fake profile and is more interested in scamming you rather than determining if you’re Mrs. Right. But how do you know if you’re dealing with someone who has a fake profile? And what are the red flags you should look for? Fortunately, there’s relationship advice to navigate the online dating scene and figure out if you’re dealing with prince charming or prince alarming.
Relationship Advice: Tips to Help Protect Yourself When Dating Online 1. It’s a big red flag if your online interest asks you for money, especially if it’s early on and you’ve never met face-to-face. Scammers will often ask for money on behalf of a sick relative, a short-term loan to pay rent, or travel money to visit you if he lives out of state. 2. Be careful if he avoids meeting you, especially if he says he will be out of the country. There’s a reason that scammers don’t want to meet face-to-face. If they’re running a game, they will come up with all kinds of excuses to avoid meeting. Some may use work travel as an excuse, others may say they have shared custody of his kids and it’s his weekend to keep them, or that an ill mother needs to be taken care of. Listen to this relationship advice: Pay close attention to what they’re saying. 3. Dating experts say to meet relatively quickly in person and in a public place. It’s advantageous to meet face-to-face to see if you have chemistry and if he is who he claims to be. It’s far easier to walk away from a bad situation before you feel an attachment. Choose a place that has foot traffic in case you need to call out for assistance. Always tell a friend or family member where you’ll be and what time you’ll be there. It might be wise to have a bail out call come 44 February 2017

30 minutes into your meeting, just in case you need an escape strategy. 4. Accept the fact everyone tells lies, even little white ones, so decide where you draw the line. Online daters want to put their best foot forward. Men may say they’re a couple of inches taller than they are in reality, and women may not accurately describe their body type. Many online daters accept superficial lies as part of the deal. My dating advice is to decide what is acceptable for you. 5. To avoid identity theft scams, try Google’s reverse image search. Take a few minutes to search the profile’s pictures, and if the reverse search shows up across hundreds of pages, it’s highly likely that the person is being deceitful and is using someone else’s images as his own.
6. When chatting online, make sure the flow of conversation makes sense to ascertain if you’re talking to a live person or a robot profile. Mix up the conversation; see if the person continues to track with you. If they’re unable to switch gears, it could be a robot responder giving predetermined responses. 7. Relationship experts say if his profile is comprised of only one photo and the text is basically empty, they could be a scammer. People who don’t want to be held accountable to the content of their profile will simply leave it blank. If they’re too lazy to take the time to self-disclose and post some self-descriptive text, then you should probably take a pass. 8. If his Facebook account has fewer than 100 friends, there’s a reason to be suspicious, especially for younger users. Most people on Facebook have more than one hundred friends. There could be an explanation; he may be new to social media or a teacher that is trying to remain private. Delve deeper into his reasons. This doesn’t necessarily apply to older users, as the average person over 55 is more likely to have smaller amounts of followers. 9. If people claim to be famous or know famous people, it could be to lure you in. Some women get star struck and might continue in conversation with someone that they aren’t interested in if there is hope of meeting someone rich and famous. Take their stories with a grain of salt; don’t continue the dialogue if you’re not truly interested. 10. Research as much as you can about the person before you meet face-to-face. Search their name on Google, search all social media profiles, and ask friends if they know them. You might find out that the person has a criminal record or may be in a serious relationship and love already! Also, you can do a thorough background check on the person via BeenVerified.com, which consolidates information from public data sources to make it a one-stop shop for accessing personal information.

How to Improve Alertness During the Workday A long workday can be both mentally and physically draining. As a result, office workers and professionals whose jobs are more physically demanding than office work may find themselves less alert at the end of the workday than at the beginning. A loss of alertness as the workday draws to a close might be unavoidable. But professionals whose sense of alertness begins to dwindle in the thick of the workday might need to take steps to improve their alertness to protect themselves from injury and to ensure the quality of their work does not suffer.
Avoid caffeine in the late afternoon. Some professionals rely on caffeinated beverages such as coffee or energy drinks to combat afternoon drowsiness. While that afternoon caffeine fix might provide an immediate, if temporary, jolt of energy, it might also affect a person's energy levels the following day. A 2013 study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that caffeine consumed as early as six hours before bedtime can significantly disrupt sleep. Professionals who reach for a cup of coffee in the late afternoon might get a sudden boost of energy, but their energy levels the following day might be lower due to a poor night's sleep. Avoid high-fat foods at lunchtime. Foods that are high in fat should always be avoided thanks to their connection to a host of health problems. Such foods also negatively affect energy levels when consumed in the middle of the day. The University of Rochester Medical Center notes that the body digests and absorbs high-fat foods very slowly. That means workers who eat high-fat foods for lunch won't get the afternoon energy boost that low-fat, healthy lunches will provide. Snack healthy. Professionals who find themselves needing a snack in the mid to late afternoon can sate their hunger and give themselves an energy boost by snacking healthy. Avoid snacks like potato chips that tend to be high in fat and low in nutrition. Foods that are high in fiber and/or protein can provide a longer energy boost and quell the 46 February 2017 |azhealthandliving.com

Change your workout schedule. Regular exercise improves short- and long-term health while also increasing daily energy levels. Professionals who include exercise in their daily routines yet still suffer from a lack of alertness in the afternoon may need to alter their workout schedules. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that participants who were assigned afternoon exercise programs during work hours reported increased productivity versus those who were not assigned afternoon workouts. If working out in the afternoon is not feasible, avoid working out too late at night, as the National Institutes of Health note that exercising within two to three hours of bedtime can disrupt sleep, ultimately having a negative impact on energy levels the following day.
The Many Benefits of Aerobic Exercise
By MS
A great workout routine combines strength training and aerobic exercise. But even some ardent exercise enthusiasts may not understand just how valuable aerobic exercise is. Running on the treadmill or using an elliptical machine might not be the most engaging exercises, but the benefits of aerobic exercise, often referred to as "cardio," are undeniable.

exercise can help men and women maintain healthy weights over the long term. The foods people eat and the fat they store provides energy the body uses as fuel during cardiovascular exercise. The longer and more intense aerobic exercise sessions are, the more calories the body burns during those sessions. Successful weight loss programs should include routine aerobic exercise.

been proven to lower people's risk for various diseases, including diabetes, heart disease and depression. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, high levels of cardiovascular fitness have been linked to a 50 percent reduction in the risk for cardiovascular disease.
Can improve muscle tone. Exercise enthusiasts who
want their efforts in the gym to show should know that aerobic exercise can improve muscle tone and get men and women closer to the ripped appearance they might be looking for. Interval training, in which cardio routines alternate between high and moderate intensity, is a great way to burn additional fat during aerobic exercise.
Can improve mood. Studies have shown that aerobic
exercise improves mood. In addition to its impact on body image, aerobic exercise triggers the release of endorphins, a group of hormones that can quickly and effectively improve mood. Studies have also shown that physical activity can help the body combat anxiety and stress. azhealthandliving.com | February 2017

How to Make Cut Flowers Last Longer What would Valentine's Day be without a beautiful bouquet of flowers? In addition to chocolate, cards and dining out, flowers - particularly roses - are among the most popular gifts. According to a survey by the National Retail Federation, 58 percent of American men and 16 percent of American women were projected to buy flowers for Valentine's Day 2016, spending a total of $1.9 billion. Similar spending is predicted for in 2017. Flowers of all shapes, sizes, colors, and aromas can make popular gifts this February. Prolonging the life of beautiful blooms is a priority for those who want their Valentine's Day arrangements to endure for as long as possible. Florists and other experts differ with regard to the best methods of preserving flowers. Here are some ideas to try.
Trim stems before immersing in water The natural emollients and sap in the stems of flowers may cause a film to form over the bottom of the stem after it is initially cut. This can reduce the flower's uptake of water. To alleviate this, cut the stems once the flowers are home. A 45-degree angle allows for the absorption of the most water. You can recut them at each water change as well.
Clean vases of bacteria Be sure that vases or other vessels you use to hold flowers are completely clean. Bacteria can cause the flowers to decompose prematurely. Use a diluted bleach-and-water solution to clean vases thoroughly between uses.
Watch flower placement Sunlight and heat may dry out the blooms. Prolong the life of flowers by placing them in the darkest, coolest area of the home.
Treat the water
vinegar and sugar, conventional flower food, bleach, aspirin and a penny. The bleach, aspirin, copper penny, and vinegar work as antibacterial agents. The sugar and the plant food help nourish the blooms. In the trials, most of the blooms remained strong for three to four days.
Purchase immature blooms
To preserve flowers, do your best to reduce bacteria, provide a food source for the flowers, and manage the pH so that the uptake of water will continue to be strong. Sugar can be an adequate food source.
Although many desire an arrangement of all opened flowers, bouquets that have some closed buds or those that are just beginning to peek out will likely last longer than bouquets that have already bloomed. The flowers will continue to open and wilting flowers can be removed to make room for the others.
Gardenista, a floral arrangement and gardening resource, tested a variety of methods for preserving flowers and found much of the same results across the board. These included
Keeping Valentine's Day flowers looking fresh and vibrant takes a few steps. By being diligent that floral arrangement can last for several days.

EXCEL & ACHIEVE
CAREER, BUSINESS & FINANCE By Matt Stewart, co-founder of College Works Painting, www.collegeworks.com
Entrepreneurs and the Impact of Relationships Many of us begin to realize success because of the nurtured relationships we’ve built. But as stress builds and businesses evolve, we allow our relationship skills to diminish. The more we engage in stressful business decisions and debate, the more our relationships suffer. We speed walk through the hallway to our office to avoid a lengthy conversation with the staff because we have back-to-back conference calls starting two minutes ago. We check emails at the dinner table because no one’s really talking right now anyway. We begin to treat all the people in our lives the same. Generic. Passionless. Cold. Soon our spouses, children, and employees feel inferior to everything else on our mind. We talk about the importance of relationships all the time. Network, build your collection of business cards, connect with colleagues on LinkedIn, and follow people within your niche on Twitter. But if we’re not going to nurture and value these relationships, what’s the point? Relationships don’t take care of themselves. Here’s how to live for others now.
Reach out to people. The expression “let’s get together sometime” has become cliché for one reason: little to no follow through. Our Google Calendars get so packed with appointments and conference calls that we forget to include a wildly important component to our day— maintaining existing relationships and creating new ones. Keep a list of your 20 closest friends and 10 people you want to get to know better and reach out to one person a day. Show your friends you care by asking how they’re doing and what’s new in their life. Ask the people you want to build relationships with what you can do for them. Genuine focus on the other person shows how committed you are to the relationship. You’ll also maintain awareness of what’s going on. 50 February 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
As entrepreneurs, time is the best gift we can give. Be there for others. Do you have a person in your life that you lean on? This is the person you call immediately without even thinking about it because they’re consistently there for you. Be that person for others. You can do this by just making time for them. As entrepreneurs, time is the best gift we can give. If someone calls, if a staff member comes into your office, make time for them. Be engaged. Don’t cut one meeting short for the upcoming meeting. Just plan better, provide support and counsel. Focus on the value delivered, not taken. Relationships are a two way street. Imagine how strong a relationship would be if you both approached it selflessly. Stop thinking about what you can gain from the relationship. Instead, focus on what you’re bringing to the table. It’s not about you, it’s about them. If you find yourself drifting off when someone’s talking to you, remind yourself of this and regain focus. Building a relationship is about having a real conversation and making a connection.
Cashing Out of Your Business
By Jane Johnson, co-author with Richardson-Mauro of Cashing Out of Your Business and website www.businesstransitionacademy.com
Blood, sweat and tears; late nights and weekends spent working; sacrificed vacations and family time – indeed, a CEO’s feelings toward his or her business often mirror those of a parent has for a child. Unfortunately, when it comes time to take the next step in life, the gravity of letting their baby go can prove overwhelming. Successful business owners tend to pore over every detail in order to improve the venture; but what they often overlook is the fact that, like parents to a child, they will someday have to allow that baby to move on. Many CEOs, rather than dealing with the reality of their business’ future without them, carry on as if nothing will change. There are a number of measures owners can take to ensure the transition is smooth and they have what they need to be happy on the other side of it.
Change is natural; learn to accept it with regard to your business. If you’re like most owners, you have invested some or most of the best years of your life, and most of your financial resources, in your business. By now, your identity and that of the business may now actually be one and the same. Take heart: Now is the time to focus on your other passions, which may be family, traveling, catching up on reading, fitness and so much more. Consider your next act as a rebirth of you. Learn to count beans – outside of your business. Now is the time to take stock of the assets you’ve saved outside of the business and determine how much income you’ll need post-transition. Then, calculate how much money you’ll need to receive from the ownership transition. Most owners are not independently wealthy without their business; most need to extract money from their companies to fund the rest of their lives. The more a business profits, the more owners tend to spread the wealth to family members, or ratchet up spending in
other ways. Be realistic about how you want your money to be spent in the next phase.
Is your business transitioning “in-house”? Small businesses – those with less than 500 employees – are responsible for nearly half of the GDP and employment in the United States. Many of these are family-run enterprises; naturally, owners often want to keep it in the family, which doesn’t always work out. Often, parents want to distribute evenly to their sons and daughters, even though only one was actually active in the business. Attempts to be “fair” can cause businesses to crumble, with an absentee owner trying to call the same shots as someone who’s always there. Be honest about what will actually be good for the business and its employees. azhealthandliving.com |February 2017

Scarlett Johannson Hollywood’s leading lady
At just 32, actress Scarlett Johannson has been in the entertainment industry for more than two decades—starring in her first film at just 9 years old. A lot has changed over the years though, as Johannson went from small roles to being named the top-grossing actor of 2016 by Forbes. “Scarlett Johansson has had a good year at the box office,” according to the recent Forbes article. “Between a top role as the Black Widow in blockbuster hit ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ which grossed over $1.15 billion worldwide, plus an ensemble part in the much less commercial ‘Hail, Caesar!,’ Johansson is 2016's top-grossing actor, bringing in $1.2 billion at global ticketing booths.” One of Johannson's most well known roles is as Natasha Romanova, also known as the Black Widow. She has reprised this timeless character in several top-grossing Marvel Studios productions over the past few years, including “Iron Man 2,” “The Avengers,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” and “Captain America: Civil War.” But, Black Widow is far from Johansson’s only leading part. Next month, fans can catch her as the main character in science fiction film “Ghost in the Shell.” According to ET, in the film, Johannson plays “a special ops, one-of-a-kind cyborg hybrid who leads a taskforce in taking down a nefarious computer hacker.” Recently, she talked to ET about how she stays in shape for all of her action movies.
52 February 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
“It's a lot of hard work and discipline, as I'm sure you know," Johansson told ET. "It's a lifestyle that starts at the gym in the morning and then I fight my way through the day.” When it comes to reputation, Johansson has a solid one among those she works with. British director Rupert Sanders recently talked to the press about her casting in “Ghost in the Shell.” “To me, you know, I cast very much from the gut and I think I was very lucky to be able to get an amazing international cast of people that I’ve always really wanted to work with,” Sanders says to The Verge. “Scarlett was one of those people, and to me there’s very few actresses who’ve had 20 years of experience, who have the cyberpunk aesthetic already baked in. You know, she comes from such edgy films from ‘Lost in Translation’ to ‘Under the Skin’ — she’s got an incredible body of work and the attitude and toughness of her really is to me The Major.” In addition to acting, Johansson is a model and singer. Added to her time on the silver screen, she also has experience on stage and lending her vocal talents to animated films, such as “Sing.” Despite such a busy career, one of Johansson’s favorite roles seems to be that of Mom to her 2-year-old daughter with husband Romain Dauriac. In fact, she recently told Entertainment Tonight that, instead of worrying about the Golden Globes, she had some issues that night that were closer to home. “I was too busy, you know, trying to make, like, mac and cheese, and [deciding,] ‘Are we going to watch the Tinkerbell movie or Strawberry Shortcake?’ My world is all into that right now,” she told the publication. “Right now she’s really into ‘Frozen’ — which lives on and on and on. It just never goes away,” Johansson continued to tell Entertainment Tonight about her daughter. “I mean, I love ‘Frozen.’ She loves it too. She’s really good at singing ‘Let It Go.’ She’s got a good ear.” For fans hoping to follow Johannson online, the talented star is actually one of the few actresses in Hollywood who doesn’t appear officially on social media. Because of this, fans will just have to wait to see Johansson on the big screen. Luckily, they likely won’t have to wait for too long. azhealthandliving.com |February 2017

'I Do,' Take Two: Guide to a Second Marriage Couples are returning to the altar in increasing numbers, as second and third weddings are becoming ever more popular. Pew Research Center indicates that, as of 2014, 64 percent of divorced or widowed men have remarried, compared with 52 percent of previously married women. Lavish second weddings were once uncommon, but that trend is also shifting. Couples who are taking another crack at marriage are tying the knot with renewed vigor and with weddings that may rival some first-timers'. Men and women who are remarrying after divorce or being widowed may not know how to approach planning their upcoming nuptials. The following are some guidelines to making the wedding sequel a success.
Wardrobe Couples who have been married before often find that they have more leeway with regard to their wedding wardrobes than they did when tying the knot for the first time. Brides may choose something less traditional than a long, white dress. In fact, this can be a time to let loose and select something that is festive or even funky. This also may provide a great opportunity to choose clothing styles from different cultures or ties into one's heritage. This freedom also allows brides to broaden their horizons with regard to where to buy their wedding wardrobes. Grooms may opt for something more casual than a tuxedo or coordinate with their brides-to-be so they are on the same creative page. Colored tuxedos and vintage suits are acceptable, even though such attire might have raised a few eyebrows the first time around.
Guest list The guest list doesn't have to be a source of anxiety. Others will understand that there may be a mĂŠlange of people at a second wedding. Children from previous marriages as well as divorced spouses or former parents-inlaw are not out of the question. Even if exes will not be included, make sure they know about the nuptials in advance of others. It's common courtesy, and it can help head off feelings of ill-will. Some couples choosing to tie the knot again scale back the 60 February 2017

size of the wedding this time around, feeling something smaller and more intimate - with only the closest of friends and family - is more suitable.
Registries and wedding gifts Considering couples who have been married previously likely have many of the housewares and items for daily living that first-timers may not, registering for these gifts is not necessary. What's more, some of the same guests may have been present at first marriages and gifted then. In lieu of gifts, couples may ask guests to donate to a specific charity or forgo gifts altogether.
Vows Couples can use experience to draft vows that have personal meaning to their unique situations and make the wedding ceremony even more special. People getting married again can impart their own personalities into the ceremony and party to follow. There are no hard rules governing second weddings, so couples can plan their weddings with good times in mind.

How Seniors Can Simplify Everyday Tasks The ability to perform everyday tasks is something many people take for granted. But as men and women approach or exceed retirement age, many may start to struggle with chores and tasks they have performed for decades. Physical limitations are a common side effect of aging. But such limitations do not have to prove too big a hurdle for seniors to clear. In fact, there are many ways for seniors to simplify everyday tasks while maintaining their independence.
Embrace technology. Seemingly, simple tasks like shopping for groceries and vacuuming a home can be difficult for seniors with dwindling or limited mobility. But seniors with internet access in their homes can order their groceries online and then pick them up instore or have them delivered, saving them the trouble of walking around the store. With regard to vacuuming, autonomous vacuum cleaners have removed the need to use traditional vacuum cleaners. Certain autonomous vacuums employ sensors to detect dirty spots on the floor, and these vacuums can even be programmed to clean the home while residents are out of the house. Upgrade bathrooms. Tasks associated with personal hygiene also tend to be taken for granted until they become difficult. But a few simple bathroom alterations can help seniors safely navigate the bathrooms in their homes so they can maintain their personal hygiene without fear of injury. Grab bars can be installed on shower walls so seniors can safely get in and out of their showers and bathtubs. Such bars are both effective and inexpensive, and some do not even require any drilling to install. Specialty grab bars, tub grips and tub transfer benches are just a few additional products that can make bathing easier for seniors who have lost or are starting to lose some of their physical strength. Get "smart" on the road. Seniors who are experiencing mild difficulty driving can make getting about town that much easier by plugging their smartphones into their vehicles or making use of the various apps that have become standard 62 February 2017
| azhealthandliving.com
in modern vehicles. For example, the maps app on a smartphone can be connected to a car and direct seniors to their destinations, saving them the trouble of remembering all the ins and outs of how to get a particular destination. Seniors also can employ apps to help them find their vehicles should they forget exactly where they parked in crowded parking lots. Such apps can increase seniors' comfort levels on the road while helping them maintain their independence.
Downsize. Whether downsizing to a smaller home or simply downsizing a lifestyle, seniors may find that living smaller is akin to living simpler. Empty nesters may find they no longer need several bedrooms in their homes, and moving into smaller homes can reduce their daily workloads while also clearing out clutter that can make performing everyday chores more difficult. Men and women accustomed to hustle and bustle may also find that cutting back on professional and/or personal commitments gives them more energy for everyday activities while enriching the commitments they continue to maintain. Aging men and women can employ various strategies to simplify their lives and maintain their independence well into their golden years.
Talking with Aging Parents About Finances By MS
One benefit of the increasing life expectancies for Americans is that more people have bonus years for enjoying the company of their aging parents. But all is not rosy. Those extended years also boost the odds that parents could go broke or suffer from dementia and be unable to make financial decisions for themselves. That can leave adult children perplexed about when and whether they should step in and find out what’s happening with their parents’ money.
Change Your Thoughts. Change Your Words. Change Your World. Sponsored by
Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to have those conversations. It’s critical that these conversations take place so that the offspring can gather information about such subjects as the parent’s income and expenses, where legal documents are kept, and what kind of medical or long-term-care insurance the parent might have. The success of these conversations often comes down to how you approach the subject. A few tips:
End the procrastination by picking a date for the talk. Make an appointment with yourself to bring up the
subject at a specific time. An opportune time to schedule this is after a birthday, a family event or a holiday where other family members are together who may share in the responsibility for the aging parents in the future.
Show respect. Tell your parents you understand and respect their reluctance to discuss their finances. You can even make the conversation about yourself rather than about them. Say that you’re concerned that if something went wrong, you would be completely lost as to how to help them. Address their fears head-on. Let them know you understand they are worried that if they talk about their finances their independence might be taken away. You might add that you want them to maintain their independence as long as possible and you’re willing to help accomplish that, but you can’t do it without the correct information.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called friends, red lights called enemies, caution lights called family. You will have flats called jobs. But, if you have a spare called determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith and a driver named Jesus—you will make it to a place called success.” – Author Unknown
