"I did my research online for the practices in Arizona that offer varicose vein removal. I knew I wanted the EVLT treatment and wanted the procedure done by a Physician, not a cosmetic place. I narrowed it down to three Physicians and chose Dr. Sharma for his experience. I could not be more pleased with my experience at Arizona Vein & Laser Institute. Dr. Sharma is a wonderful physician. As he is performing the procedure, he explains what he is doing and is so concerned about making you feel comfortable. As for his staff, I cannot say enough good words. One thing I have learned in my lifetime is that your employees are only as good as you are. Dr. Sharma, you have a wonderful staff which says alot about you as an employer. I spent many office visits with them and every time they were pleasant, caring and professional. I was impressed by the way they worked as a team with Dr. Sharma. Thank you so much!" Joy A.

"I had called your office on a Monday morning to see if I could be fit in for an appointment as soon as possible because of a complication I had over the weekend. Being a new patient and never being seen at your office before it didn't matter because the woman who answered was not only kind, friendly and sypmathetic of my situation, but she was able to fit me in that very same afternoon. I have to say how incredibly impressed I was with the entire staff at this office but even more so with Dr. Sharma and Dr. Hecht. Their bedside manners are second to none. Thank you!" Scott Schrimp

Relief is right here in the West Valley Dr. Kukurin was named a Top Chiropractor by the Consumers Research Council of America. He is listed in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare. With over 20 years of experience using acupuncture, chiropracticand science based nutritional therapies, the results produced by our methods have been featured on local TV newscasts, published in scientific journals, indexed in the National Library of Medicine and have been presented Knee Pain at medical conferences at Johns Hopkins and the Peripheral Nerve Society.

Diabetic Neuropathy, Peripheral Neuropathy Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, Plantar Fasciitis If you are suffering from lower back, buttocks and or leg pain or your feet or legs are cramping, numb or burning especially at night, you almost certainly have a condition which involves the nerves of the legs. The largest nerve in the body, the sciatic nerve (pictured in red to the right), starts in the lower back, runs through the muscles of the buttocks and down to the tip of the toes. If this nerve gets irritated, you can experience really terrible pain anywhere along the course of the nerve. You may also experience burning, numbness and odd sensations in your muscles. Irritation of this nerve may produce severe cramping or crawling sensations in your muscles. Of course, your back and leg pain can be caused by a pinched nerve in your lower back. This can be from a vertebra that is out of place, it can be caused by a slipped disc or it can be caused by spinal stenosis or any combination of these problems. Each of these conditions, bad discs, spinal stenosis or displaced vertebrae have very different treatments. Knowing exactly why you have your back and leg troubles is absolutely essential for effective care.

Headaches, Vertigo, TMJ, Migraines, Sinus Headache Neck and Shoulder Pain, Pinched Nerves, Tennis Elbow and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Spinal Stenosis, Sciatica, Lower Back, Hip and Leg Pain

So how do you find results? The answer is called Integrative Neurology. Neurology is the study of the nerves. This allows us to diagnose tough nerve conditions like spinal stenosis, disc problems and neuropathy. What happens next truly separates our integrative neurology approach from anything else available to help correct lower back, hip, leg and foot problems. We have pioneered techniques to decompress nerves, but also use a number of natural substances that have been shown in recent scientific studies to help nerves re-grow and repair. There are no current drugs that can do this. But that’s not all. We combine special electrical stimulation techniques with acupuncture. A combination that has been shown to correct abnormal nerve function and promote nerve repair. There simply is no better or more comprehensive system for diagnosing and correcting the cause of spinal stenosis, neuropathy and other conditions that cause lower back, hip and leg pain and numbness. “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” ~Romans 12:2

Welcome to our January issue. Many have started the year with New Year's resolutions, while others may still be holding on to some from prior years. Stop repurposing your resolutions – and start the New Year meditating on God’s word for your best year ever! Last year is gone- let go, let God! Thank and praise God for this new opportunity to make a fresh start! Here are a few Bible verses to inspire a fresh start with God in 2018:

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope..

Romans 8:28

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Ephesians 4:22-24

Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Matthew 6:33-34

Ezekiel 36:25-27

Psalm 51:10-11

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Philippians 3:13-15

Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.

Joshua 1:8

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

James 1:25

But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.

Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.

Isaiah 40:31

But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

Colossians 3:23-24

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. Until next time, Wishing you and yours a Happy New Year filled with many blessings! God Bless You for Your Support!

Pita Jungle

Mastering “The Art of Healthy Living” This time of year, everyone is looking to feel their best and eat healthier after the holidays. It can be challenging, especially for those who don’t know how. But thankfully, there is a local restaurant that has been the go-to spot for healthy and delicious cuisine for more than two decades. Pita Jungle has wowed its customers since day one and mastered “The Art of Eating Healthy” with 20 locations throughout Arizona. With the mission of helping guests sustain a healthy and balanced lifestyle, the restaurant serves up a diverse menu of tasty, fresh, wholesome foods, including a variety of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. Pita Jungle’s menu is influenced by tastes from around the globe with the benefits of the Mediterranean diet always apparent through the use of healthy lean proteins, veggies, legumes, nuts, grains and fruit. Bassel Osmani, Nelly Kohsok and Fouad Khodr founded Pita Jungle in 1994. The three were students at the time attending Arizona State University. The friends often socialized outside of classes, and they all had a similar hard-working attitude and vision for the future. Upon graduating college, they all recognized a need for more healthy restaurants around the university’s Tempe campus, and set out to make a difference by leveraging their own personal experiences gained by working in the local restaurant industry. It was then that the vision for Pita Jungle was born.

“Pita Jungle was founded on the principle of serving the best quality food at a reasonable price with exceptional customer service,” says Osmani. “Instead of focusing on profit right out of the gates, we placed bringing people through the doors as our top priority. Another key component and differentiating factor for us was the vegan and vegetarian menu items. At the time when we started, there was only one nearby market offering these kinds of options, and our team wanted to make healthy, greattasting food readily available for those leading both lifestyles.” With only $15,000 and a vision, the trio opened the first Pita Jungle location in Tempe in 1994. They built the location with their own hands, employing the help of only one handyman. Each Pita Jungle restaurant has a unique mood and personality; it is designed to have a character that is reflective of the times and the locality. From the unique décor and original artwork by local artists, to the custom, handpicked music playlist and creative non-formulaic staff, there are no cookie-cutter locations at Pita Jungle. One of the best-kept secrets about Pita Jungle is their happy hour. Last year, the restaurant revamped their happy hour with more items and offerings as low as $2. Aside from their award-winning menu, Pita Jungle serves up a Seasonal Kitchen Crafts menu every few months featuring a handful of new dishes that satisfy every palate. The current seasonal menu is digging deep in the roots of Levantine cuisine, with ingredients and comfort foods like a

HEART OF THE COMMUNITY

By Amanda Ventura

Care Fund

A nonprofit for heart and home Eight months ago, Quinn Walker was born with half of a heart. It’s a condition called hypoplastic left heart syndrome, and it has kept her at Phoenix Children’s Hospital for three months, collectively. When Quinn was 7 days old, she had her first open-heart surgery. Her second came four months later, and she will need one more repair when she’s 4 years old. Eventually, Quinn will require an entire heart transplant. Her parents, Sandee and Adam, are in their early 30’s. They have two sons – Logan, 8, and Mason, 5 – and careers. She is a dance teacher and he’s a firefighter. The Walkers wanted to be with Quinn 24/7 while she was in the hospital. That meant Sandee would go on hiatus with her dance studio and they would survive on Adam’s income while medical expenses added up. A caseworker at Phoenix Children’s Hospital suggested the Walkers find nonprofits to help them financially cope. Sandee admits they felt too proud to ask for help. By the second procedure, though, Sandee decided to it was time to get help. She turned to Care Fund – a Scottsdalebased nonprofit that helps families stay in their homes while dealing with a severely ill or injured child by covering their monthly housing expenses. The coverage by Care Fund came just in time, Sandee says. “I wished we had asked for help sooner,” she says. “We are

the kind of people who always helped other people, but when it came around to us needing help, we didn’t want to ask.” Now, she tells people that if someone offers you help – take it. And if you need help, ask. As the first of its kind in the state, leaders in the homeownership industry who are passionate about creating a stronger, more secure family environment for all Arizonans founded Care Fund in 2013. Co-founding members are Homeowners Financial Group CEO Bill Rogers and President Pat Lamb, who was inspired by the passing of his infant son Apollo. “A parent should never have to choose between working to pay their mortgage and caring for their child,” Lamb says. In the last five years, Care Fund has hit significant milestones. By the end of 2017, the mortgage assistance charity has helped more than 500 families in 53 cities cover their rent or mortgage. It has granted $1.2 million in mortgage and rent payments for Arizona families. That means Care Fund has given more than 106 years of monthly payments and 152,760 restful nights for families during their child’s extended health crises. The average grant assistance is $2,377 and covers between one and three months of financial help. To guide Care Fund into its next stage of milestones, Alyssa Crockett was appointed executive director last November.

6 January 2018 |

Photos By Michelle White Photography

When Crockett arrived at her new office, she says that familiar faces greeted her – a photo of a young family she knew very well hung by her door. For the last year and a half, she had worked with this family as the executive director of another local nonprofit, Ryan House. She took this as a sign she would be right at home in her new role. “Our co-founders, who are leaders at Homeowners Financial Group, and their initial supporters are why Care Fund is successful today,” Crockett says. “Looking forward, our goal is to build on those incredible efforts and on the great foundation they built.” Care Fund’s goal over the next year is to, with the help of leading housing and economic experts, evaluate the economic and social impact of keeping families in their homes. Financial struggle only scratches the surface of what Care Fund’s aid accomplishes in its communities. Crockett points out 90 percent of families who have to provide 24/7 care to a sick child end up divorced. Just about 80 percent of these children’s siblings will end up developing some kind of social or academic issue. Crockett wants Arizona communities to more deeply understand the importance of keeping Care Fund families in their homes.

“Those in the homeownership industry know what it means for a family to be in a home,” says Crockett. “They understand the importance of bringing that message to the greater community.” For more information about Care Fund, visit www.the carefund.org.

It wasn’t until 2014 that I needed to seek treatment for a patella tendon tear that I received while competing at the Commerce World’s Strongest Man in China. I had only heard about PRP treatments and the great benefits that it could have on one’s injuries - that’s when I found Dr. Lundquist at Active Life Physical Medicine & Pain Center in Avondale, Arizona. To this day, I have received Orthovisc injections to both knees along with PRP. I have also received PRP treatments for muscle tears and other tendon tears that I’ve obtained while competing at World’s Strongest Man. I feel that without Dr. Lundquist knowledge in sports medicine and PRP that I would have had to have surgery. The PRP treatments have played a huge role in keeping me at an elite level. Waymo Enters New Phase of Fully Self-Driving Testing Waymo recently announced the start of a new phase of testing for its safest, most advanced, self-driving vehicles to date. After nearly a decade of working on this technology, 3.5 million miles driven, and thousands of comprehensive tests, Waymo will now be test-driving in parts of the Phoenix metro area without the need for a person in the driver’s seat. The fully self-driving cars are designed to be safe drivers and will be responsible for every roadway decision, including the route the car takes, lane changes, turns, stops and yields for other pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles on the road. Waymo began testing in Arizona in 2016. For this new phase, Waymo will introduce fully self-driving vehicles without a test driver in the driver’s seat. These vehicles will travel within a defined geographic area in the Phoenix region where they have tested extensively. These vehicles will operate alongside its existing test fleet that will continue to have a Waymo driver at the wheel monitoring the system. HEALTH MS

How to Make Informed Health Care Decisions The typical health care patient has changed in recent years. No longer are individuals putting all of their health care decisions into the hands of nurses and doctors. Patients are more informed than ever before and are interested in taking a more active role in their own care. Thanks to the internet, people are able to access information that, in the past, was not easily available. A few decades ago, medical data may have been elusive and filled with confusing jargon the layperson might not have understood without a crash course in biology. However, today there are different websites that clearly spell out information about certain illnesses and diseases. This means that patients may no longer be walking blindly into appointments with doctors. Facing an illness is never easy, and the decision-making abilities could be hampered by emotions and the desire to improve as quickly as possible. Patients who do not have all of the facts may have to rely solely on the expertise of caregivers and physicians when making important health care decisions. By knowing the avenues of information, a patient can find assistance with careful decision-making. While learning about an ailment is important, there are some things to consider.

The internet isn't foolproof. Many online medical sites are very reliable and offer a wealth of pertinent information. They can be good starting points when seeking out information on a particular condition. It is in your best interest to visit sites that are well-known and monitored by respected medical affiliations. Other sites may be peppered with exaggerated claims or misinformation. Therefore, do not go by online information alone. Don't self-diagnose. It can be easy to use the internet as a means to narrowing down symptoms and making assumptions about what ailments you may have. Instead 30

a uary 201

azhealthandliving.com

of using the internet to self-diagnose your condition, leave the diagnosis up to your doctor, and rely on online information after you are diagnosed. This can improve your understanding of the condition and any potential treatment options.

Seek other avenues of information. You should never hesitate to seek a second opinion or go to a published medical journal to find out more about a condition. You have rights as a patient to be comfortable with the advice doctors give and be as involved in your treatment as you want to be. Online forums could be more harm than help. Many people turn to online forums and blogs to gain more insight into particular diseases. While these forums may be good sources of support, information published on these sites could be misleading, inaccurate or unsafe. Before trying any proposed treatment, it is best to consult with your doctor. Having a general knowledge of a medical condition can enable health care consumers to make more informed decisions about their situations.

Safe Ways to Deal with Sinus Pressure By MS

Sinuses are bony, hollow, air-filled cavities inside the face and skull. They are located in the low-center of the forehead, behind the eyes and in bones behind the nose. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center says the sinuses lighten the skull and produce a mucus that moisturizes the inside of the nose. Unfortunately, when colds or the flu strikes, sinuses may become one of the first spots affected by these illnesses. In order to combat sinus congestion and drainage concerns, people may try certain strategies that include flushing the sinuses and thinning the mucus. It is imperative to use safe flushing methods to keep the sinuses healthy. Neti pots are among the more popular methods to flushing sinuses. These small teapot-like devices with elongated snouts have become a fixture in many medicine cabinets. Because they are drug-free alternatives, they can be handy for those worried about antihistamines making them drowsy or reacting with other drugs. Neti pots and other nasal irrigation systems use saline to moisten and clear out nasal passages to promote drainage of sinus cavities. However, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, using these devices improperly can increase one's risk of infection. CBS News says that neti pots have even been linked to the deadly Naegleria fowleri, which is otherwise known as the "brain-eating" amoeba. The key to preventing infection is to only use previously boiled, sterile or distilled water to irrigate. Tap water is not adequately filtered, says the FDA, and may contain low levels of organisms that can stay alive in nasal passages and potentially cause serious infections. Those who are concerned about nasal irrigation safety may be wise to skip neti pots and use prepackaged, sterile saline solutions that are bottled for the purpose of alleviating congestion. However, when prepared water is used in a clean neti pot or other device, these methods can be perfectly safe. Sinuses can get clogged for many reasons. To free up breathing, people are urged to consult their physicians to learn more about how to safely irrigate their nasal passages. azhealthandliving.com |

SPIRIT

CONNECT WITHIN

By Vickie Milazzo, author of Wicked Success Is Inside Every Woman

2018—The Year to Create the Life You Really Want! You can do a lot more than (barely) get by—and 2018 can be the year you actually start living your life again. It is possible to create a life that excites and energizes you. But first, you have to make a conscious choice to step out of your old, unfulfilling one. And it’s a choice you have to make over and over again—if you don’t your old patterns will suck you back in. To achieve “Wicked Success” you have to cultivate a new, wickedly resourceful mindset. Here are seven strategies that can help you do exactly that in 2018:

Break the feel-good addiction. Remember, where you focus is where you’ll yield results. And because we like to feel good, we gravitate toward what’s easy instead of what’s productive. We major in minor accomplishments, wasting time surfing the internet, watching TV, hanging out on Facebook, trying to beat our high score on games. Stop being the Chief Everything Officer – don’t say “Yes” by default. It’s a hard lesson to learn but in order to be wickedly successful, you have to understand that by saying “no” to some things you will have the time and energy to say “yes” to the right things. If you’re feeling overwhelmed and pulled in every direction you won’t be able to lead yourself, much less anyone else.

Do something big every day. You eat a whale the same way you eat an apple – one bite at a time. The wickedly successful understand that to accomplish any project you can’t expect to do it all at once. Don’t wait for conditions to be perfect. Along the way to becoming wickedly successful, you may have to redefine what success looks like for you. Conditions will never be perfect – there will always be something muddying the water, even if it’s just a little muddy.

Surround yourself with as many successful mentors as possible. Inept coaches don’t fail to help you – they help 32 January 2018| azhealthandliving.com

you to fail. Look around you for others whose work you admire and model yourself after them instead.

Regenerate your passion for work. Do you remember why you wanted the career you have? It was probably the love you had for the profession whether you get to help people every day, use your creativity, crunch numbers or whatever your passion is. Tap back into the frame of mind you had when you were just starting out. Ask yourself, what can I do to become passionate about work again?

Take care of yourself first. If you stepped back and looked at your daily routine objectively, as if it were happening to your best friend, what would be your advice? Slow down? Take a few deep breaths? To have healthy, exciting and fulfilling relationships with others, we must first have a healthy, exciting and fulfilling relationship with ourselves. Don’t be so busy taking care of others that you forget to take care of yourself. You can’t be your best self if you’re not your own self. There’s no reason why 2018 can’t be your biggest, boldest, most wickedly successful year yet. But for that to happen you have to match your big goals with some real changes. You have to take on a wickedly successful mindset that doesn’t take ‘no’ or ‘I can’t’ or ‘I’m too tired’ for an answer.

How to Keep Your Emotions from Dictating Your Financial Future Matthew T. Shafer, author of The Future of Your Wealth

You’ve probably heard of emotional eating, but emotional investing is a problem that needs to be recognized society wide, especially since the economy has been in such sharp focus this past half decade. The words of an experienced mentor have proven to be spot on; he said that no matter how smart they are, most people don’t know what to do with their money. It wasn’t that people were ignorant, and it wasn’t that they were incapable of analyzing investment opportunities. The challenge occurred when emotion clouded their judgment. People become too optimistic and enthusiastic when their investments are on the rise, and too fearful and skeptical when they see a decline. This holds true for all income levels. Here are a few tips for avoiding the No. 1 detriment to your financial well-being:

Create a buffer of expertise. It’s impossible to completely separate your emotions from your finances. But you can create distance between them by putting experts in the middle. Sometimes, you have to do the tough thing. Financial advisors, too, experience emotional responses to market crashes and other startling events. That’s why it’s tough to exercise discipline, and caution against over investing assets that are hot. Why? For the same reason buying a home during the peak of the real estate market turned out to be a poor decision – because bubbles burst. Similarly, after housing prices have crashed – that’s the best time to invest in property. Build your knowledge; it breeds confidence and prevents panic. People tend to get more emotional about things they don’t completely understand. Don’t let malaise dominate your future; embrace optimism where you can. Excessive pessimism is just as detrimental to your future wealth as too much optimism; balance and objectivity based on solid information will serve you best. azhealthandliving.com |

FAMILY, KIDS & RELATIONSHIPS By Eric Hutchinson, certified financial planner and author of The Financial Briefing

Seven Ways to Help Your Child Develop a Lifetime Emergency Fund As Jodi walked to class that day, the freshman noticed a large circle of booths spread out across the main courtyard of campus. Scattered among the booths was one giving away free tshirts with the school’s mascot on it. All Jodi had to do to get the free swag was fill out a form. As a bonus, she would receive this little plastic card that was practically free money. Or so she thought. Four years later, she was stuck with a $5,000 T-shirt thanks to the debt she rang up. Children who learn the importance of saving money at a young age are much better prepared to manage their money independently once they are grown. Jodi’s parents never talked to her about debt. Or how she could have bought a similar T-shirt with cash, stashed away a matching amount in an emergency fund, and been in the clear financially by the time she graduated. Instead, she has joined the average college graduate in America who leaves school with more than $5,600 in credit card debt alone. Children should begin to build an emergency fund as soon as they can so they can have some money saved up and understand the principles of savings and creating an emergency account by the time they become young adults. Here are seven ways to help your child develop a lifetime emergency fund:

Encourage kids to save something. Whether it be a 10-year-old stashing away a dollar or teenagers opening a savings or checking account, get kids in the habit of saving no matter how small the amount. Help kids balance treats and sacrifices. Help your kids by setting, and meeting goals. Once those goals are met, allow them a little withdrawal to buy something for themselves.

Keep kids away from credit as long as possible. Credit card companies have large marketing budgets and much of those funds are spent on marketing to older teenagers. Make sure he or she understands what credit pitfalls could lie ahead.

Schedule money meetings. Meet with your child at regular intervals so that you can discuss their emergency account, answer questions, and discuss money issues he or she might encounter.

Loose change goes to the emergency fund. Loose

Help kids set up a real budget. The earlier kids learn to manage a budget, the easier things will be down the line. Younger kids can start learning by jotting their plusses and minuses down on a piece of paper, while older kids can be introduced to budgeting on software and apps.

change can add up, so don’t let kids discard those pennies or leave them lying in the parking lot – no matter if they are heads or tails up. Set an example. Children don’t miss much, and if they don’t see you saving, they might wonder why they need to save.

Circumstances are always changing as people grow older. I would recommend going over each year’s changing needs with your kids. The emergency fund has to adapt and be ready for whatever circumstances might pop up.

Helping Kids Find Hobbies By MS

Much like adults can benefit from participating in hobbies, children can reap rewards from engaging in hobbies. According to the Child Development Institute, hobbies give children a chance to express themselves. The CDI also notes that hobbies can play an important role in children's self-discovery and boost their self-esteem. Some children may discover hobbies on their own, requiring little if any assistance on the part of their parents. For example, some kids may display an interest in music that parents, even those with no such musical inclination, can foster by purchasing certain instruments. But some children may need a little more prompting, and parents of such boys and girls can take certain steps to help their youngsters find rewarding hobbies.

Involve kids in your own hobbies. Kids look up to their parents and often want to emulate what their mothers and fathers do. If possible, involve children in your own hobbies. Let kids choose an activity. While some children might take to hobbies their parents favor, others might need to be given some freedom to find their own activities. Afford youngsters this chance, recognizing that it might take some time before kids find an activity that genuinely sparks their passion. Be a source of encouragement. Some hobbies may prove more difficult than kids first imagined, requiring some perseverance before they can be enjoyed fully. In such instances, observe youngsters while they engage in the activity. If they appear to be enjoying themselves but are periodically frustrated, encourage them to keep trying. If kids appear to be disinterested in overcoming any struggles, then they might benefit by pursuing another hobby. Don't hesitate to focus on fun. Hobbies can teach kids valuable lessons and provide a sense of fulfillment, but it's important that parents not overlook the importance of fun in regard to their children's hobbies. Hobbies can provide children with the same respite from busy schedules that they do adults, and that break should be as fun as possible. azhealthandliving.com |

FITNESS, NUTRITION & SPORTS

STAY ACTIVE & FIT

By Dr. Joyce Nash, author of Lose Weight, Live Healthy: A Complete Guide to Designing Your Own Weight Loss Program

Eleven Ways to Shrink Your Waist! Often, it’s the little things that add up to the greatest victories. Shrink Your Waist with these 11 simple ways to manage the way you think about and respond to food!

Always shop from a list Knowing beforehand what you need to buy keeps you on the straight and narrow grocery store aisle, whereas “impulse shopping” will quickly fill your cart with problem foods.

Don’t shop when you are overly hungry or tired These are the times when your defenses against “junk” will be at their lowest, so try to schedule your shopping after a meal and earlier in the day.

“Sanitize” your pantry Yes, it’s fine to indulge in your favorite “guilty pleasures” from time to time in moderation, but it’s not a good idea to keep your pantry constantly stocked with them. Remove your biggest temptations.

Make leftovers less prominent

Harness the power of optical illusions Serve food on small plates so that it looks like more than it actually is.

Use common health sense C’mon, we all know (more or less) what will clog our arteries and what won’t. Choose and prepare healthy foods. Avoid frying; broil, bake or poach instead.

Slow down!

Store them in containers that are not see-through.

Keep food out of sight so it stays out of your stomach While this is one of those “no, duh!” pieces of advice, it’s amazing how many people persist in not following it. The fact is, though, that if you allow yourself to be around a food that typically breaks down all of your defenses, you have only yourself to blame when you cave. Put away reminders of food—like the cookie jar or the partially full chip bag—and store problem foods on a top shelf or cabinet.

Pre-portion your problem foods If you know a certain food presents a particular temptation, divide it into smaller, reasonable portions before storing it. Then eat only one at a time. 36 January 2018 | azhealthandliving.com

Unless you truly are pressed for time, remember that meals aren’t a race. Take your time—your taste buds will thank you!

Let someone else clear the table and clean up If post-meal grazing is a big temptation, try to negotiate your household chores so that you are able to avoid this one.

Brush your teeth before clearing the table If you’re stuck with this chore, make a quick trip to the bathroom and brush your teeth first. You’ll be less apt to munch afterward! Or put a strong mint in your mouth— anything to divert your taste buds. Alternatively, try dabbing some cologne or strong-smelling ointment under your nose. These are short-term ways to stop a craving in its tracks.

Health Benefits of Vegetarian Diets By MS

Many people change their lifestyles in an effort to improve their overall health. Changing the foods one eats is one of the more common ways people try to get healthy, and many people find adopting a vegetarian diet helps them realize their goals. Adopting a vegetarian diet can be a great way to improve personal health. Vegetarians may now find it easier to maintain their lifestyles than ever before thanks to the yearround availability of a variety of fresh produce and more vegetarian dining options offered at restaurants. Even premade vegetarian foods are more widely available at markets and grocery stores. Approximately six to 8 million adults in the United States eat no meat, fish or poultry, according to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, a nonprofit organization that disseminates information about vegetarianism. Many more avoid red meat while still eating fish and poultry. Although studies into vegetarianism long pointed out the potential nutritional deficiencies of such a diet, the tides have shifted, and many nutrition experts now note how eating plant-based foods offers sufficient nutrition and can reduce the risk for chronic illnesses. A vegetarian diet may offer protection against cardiovascular disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes and obesity. Data published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society found vegetarian diets are high in carbohydrates, dietary fiber, essential vitamins and minerals; offer an abundance of antioxidants; and are very low in saturated fat. However, switching to a vegetarian diet is not enough to lose weight or get healthier. Choosing the right type of vegetarian foods - including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and protein-rich legumes - and controlling portions is key. Vegetarians may have low cholesterol, as well as fewer incidences of stroke, obesity and cardiovascular incidents than non-vegetarians. Whether this is entirely food-based, or because vegetarians tend to also embrace other healthy habits, has not yet been determined. azhealthandliving.com | January 2018

In fact, the average person who has trouble hearing waits on average -10 years before seeing an audiologist to have it treated. ntreated hearing loss can lead to auditory deprivation which can cause the hearing nerve to shut down over time. If the hearing nerve shuts down from lack of auditory stimulation, chances of hearing aids helping are very slim. If hearing aids are worn after the nerve ceases to function, the biggest complaint is clarity. In these situations, the only option is a surgically implanted hearing device.

of symptoms, namely pain and/or numbness down the leg with or without back pain. These are common symptoms, but not a specific disease.

Recent studies also show that untreated hearing loss is now raising the risk for the early onset of dementia, due to lack of stimulation, which ultimately results in cognitive decline. When you deprive your ears from hearing, you are also depriving your brain from processing environmental sounds, speech and cognition. Your brain processes sound binaurally (from both sides), so not keeping both sides of the brain active can create cognitive load (straining to hear) and can lead to cognitive decline. y keeping all the areas of the brain functioning to their full potential, the risk of dementia decreases.

A patient with sciatic symptoms can have more than one reason for their sciatica: for example, a pinched nerve in the ankle plus a herniated disc and also peripheral neuropathy from diabetes. Effective treatment starts with a specific diagnosis. It only makes sense that tailoring specific treatments to the cause of a patient’s sciatic symptoms will likely produce better results. In addition to identifying the cause of the sciatic symptoms, you need to have the technology to treat the specific cause. For example, laser-acupuncture therapy can relieve leg pain caused by diabetes, whereas spinal decompression is more effective for stenosis and bad discs. Complex therapy can be formulated for patients with more than one reason for their sciatica.

It is important to know the exact condition that is causing the symptoms we call sciatica. Most patients don’t know that stenosis, bulging or degenerated discs or even a pinched nerve near the ankle can cause sciatica symptoms. Still other patients develop sciatic symptoms from diabetes; even blood clots can produce sciatic-like symptoms. This is important because treatment of sciatic symptoms from, say stenosis, is going to be very different from the treatment of sciatic symptoms from diabetes.

This condition causes pain and swelling, night cramps, change in skin color and severe cases ulcers. Spider veins are small blue and red vessels visible within the skin, usually on legs but sometimes on face and chest. The latest technology available for vein treatment at our center is called Endovenous Laser Ablation Therapy (EVLT). A laser is used in a forty-five minute procedure to close the incompetent vein. This procedure is performed at our practice under local anesthetics.

just below your Adam's apple. Your thyroid produces hormones that regulate your heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and body weight. Although cancer within the thyroid is uncommon in the U.S., the incidence seems to be increasing, perhaps because technology is allowing clinicians to detect them at a much smaller size than in the past. Most cases can be cured with treatment.

Typically, there are no signs or symptoms of early thyroid cancer. As thyroid cancer grows, it can cause a lump on your neck that can be palpated, a change in your voice such as hoarseness, difficulty swallowing with pain in your throat and in later stages swollen lymph nodes. Risks factors include the female sex, for cancer of the thyroid arises more often in women than in men. Exposure to high levels of radiation and certain inherited genetic syndromes. Other risks are a history of a goiter, being of Asian descent and being between the ages of 25 and 65. Treatment will usually involve a complete thyroidectomy. Typically, this is done through a traditional 8-9cm incision across the neck, but at Precision Surgery, we are employing a 3-4cm incision for most thyroid resections, which translates to a 4-5 day recovery period and less pain. The smaller incision also offers cosmetics benefits which traditional surgery was unable to provide. An early detection is key for optimal outcomes.

hesitate to engage in active movement programs due to fears of their diagnoses. A diagnosis of degenerative disc disease can strike fear in people and cause them to move more carefully, with significant added tension. Attempting to move with caution so as to protect the disc can even increase the pain by compressing pain-sensitive structures in the spine. Despite how scary it can sound, it’s important to recognize that degenerative disc diagnoses are actually a normal part of aging, just like thinning or receding hair. A study of 3,110 pain-free people showed that 37–96% of participants in all age groups experienced disc degeneration. If you have general pain or even a scary diagnosis, a physical therapist can thoroughly examine you and help find ways to get you moving again, while addressing your unique concerns and movement goals. Together, you can develop an exercise program to help you move better with less pain and get back to the activities that are important in your life. disordered breathing is to open the airway to allow a sufficient amount of oxygen into the lungs and bloodstream.

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) was thought for many years to be the “gold standard” of treatment for sleepdisordered breathing. CPAP consists of a mask that fits over the mouth and/or nose using a tube to connect to an air compressor next to the bed. The compressor forces air into the tube and mask, thus shooting air into the nose and/or mouth, forcing the airway to open from the pressure of the air compressor. This mode of treatment is best discussed with your physician. Surgery, such as tongue reduction, surgical removal of the soft tissue at the back of the throat, removal of the uvula, modification of the palate, etc., is another treatment option. Surgery is performed in-office or at a hospital by an ENT or oral surgeon. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine does not consider surgery an effective long-term treatment for sleep-disordered breathing, and surgical procedures are considered only 30 to 50 percent effective. Oral appliance therapy has become a viable, scientifically based treatment option for sleep-disordered breathing. Oral appliances hold the jaw in a position that allows the airway to remain as patent as possible during sleep. They are similar to athletic mouth guards, but are less bulky and completely noninvasive. Some patients report an increase in saliva production or minor discomfort upon awakening, but that generally subsides.

Q. Why

Q.

Q.

A. “Cure sometimes. Treat often. Comfort A. New Year’s Day is a great time to get always.” That was the mantra of Hippocrates, the Father of modern medicine, the man who authored the Hippocratic oath. In other words, he argued that doctors may not always be able to cure their patients’ ailments, but they should always strive to be compassionate. Body donation is a key factor in cultivating and inspiring this allimportant compassion in medical and other health care students. In anatomy class, the body donor becomes the students’ first patient and most important teacher. In addition to teaching them about the anatomy of the human body, the donor also offers them an intimate connection with human anatomy that no reproduction or simulation can offer. Body donation is essential to the anatomy class that forms the foundation for medical education. From the donor, students learn the complex three-dimensional anatomy of the human body. Cadavers are also the only way for students to appreciate the anatomical variation that exists, which helps them learn to treat their future patients as unique individuals, creating individualized plans of care and treatment strategies. Students work together in groups in the anatomy laboratory, in which they complete complex tasks as a group, while learning effective communication, problem-solving skills, and how to work as a team. Ultimately, from the body donors, medical and other health care students learn about the complexities of the human body and its variability, teamwork, communication, and perhaps most importantly, compassion.

Just the thought of having to undergo an started with a new, healthy lifestyle. The temptation of holiday eating is gone and MRI scan can be overwhelming for some. MRI is a painless procedure and in recent people focus on their body. years great advancements have been made to both the scanner and the patient environment.

Men and women often wait until their holiday parties and traveling are over until they see a professional. Although liposuction shouldn’t be considered a weight loss procedure, patients often become healthier after their procedure. After patients get liposuction, they are always motivated to eat better and exercise more. Fat is taken from problem areas that typically have been bothering the patient for years if not decades. Once patients see their results, they want to stay that way.

One of my patients’ favorite procedures is Tickle Lipo. Fat is gently and permanently removed from problem areas. At the same time that fat is being removed, the skin is tightened. Infrasonic vibration interferes with your brain’s pain receptors, which suppresses or blocks pain entirely, and feels like being tickled. A unique “triple movement” cannula removes fat without causing trauma to the rest of your body so life is back to normal in days, not weeks.

Imaging centers these days go to great lengths to accommodate patients who feel anxious. When researching where to have an MRI, look for a center that offers all of the following to make the experience as comfortable as possible: • An MRI scanner with a larger bore. Some newer scanners are constructed with a larger bore architecture that allow for a more open environment and greatly improve patient comfort. These scanners are also able to scan faster than before. • Headphones or earplugs during the procedure. This will help soften the noise of the scanner. Patients should be allowed to choose their music from Pandora or a similar app. Music helps to ease anxiety and also allows patients to focus on something other than the scan and the impending results. • Lavender aromatherapy tabs that can be placed on a patient’s gown to promote relaxation. • A hand held call button that will alert the technologist to come into the room immediately. • Trained technologists that communicate with the patient throughout the exam. The technologist can hear the patient as well as speak to the patient. • If necessary, a family member should be allowed to sit in the room with a patient while having their exam, as long as they are cleared to be MRI safe. If family is not available, a staff member can provide that support. Dr. ian Valley Radiologists 623.847.2000

Q. What is the newest in regenerative treatments for pain?

Q. What can do to feel healthier happier and more balanced?

Q. Is there a "magic bullet" to turn back the hands of time?

A. For many years, stem cells have been one of the hottest topics of medical research. Many believe that these primary building blocks of our bodies have an unlimited regenerative potential. Amniotic fluid is rich in stem cells.

.. Many of us struggle to balance work, family, wellness, and the practical necessities of life. The beginning of the year is a great time to incorporate a mind-body exercise into your lifestyle.

A. There is no one single treatment that can

It is also full of healing growth factors such as epidermal growth factor (EGF), transforming growth factor beta (TGF-b), fibroblast growth factor (FGF) and platelet derived growth factor (PDGF). In addition, it has specialized proteins and collagen fibers essential for tissue repair. Medical research shows that all of this together provides supportive clinical benefits by charging the body's natural regenerative processes. Amniotic fluid is harvested from planned cesarean section births and no fetal cells are utilized. Without any fetal cells, amniotic fluid does not raise the same ethical concerns associated with stem cells. Amniotic fluid is the next step in regenerative medicine. Currently it is used for chronic wounds especially wounds caused by venous insufficiency and diabetes. Acute wounds can be treated to prevent or decrease scarring. Amniotic fluid also has a wide use in sports medicine. It is used to treat joints sprains, strains and tendonitis. Surgeons have begun using it as well to increase healing and for reducing scar formation in spine, pelvic and abdominal surgeries. Research is still in its infancy but very promising outcomes have been observed. I have almost 15 years of experience in regenerative medicine with prolotherapy, platelet rich plasma therapy and now amniotic fluid treatments and am truly excited about the outcomes.

oga, tai chi, and i gong are now considered very mainstream, and unite mindfulness and meditation with physical activity. Practitioners of mind-body exercise have better moods and mental health, and they enjoy more restful sleep compared to participants in other forms of exercise. Meditation also leads to activation in areas of the brain for self-regulation, problemsolving, self-realization and adaptive behavior. Just 15 minutes of self or videoled mind-body exercise can be beneficial. While tai chi and i gong are slow-moving, se uenced postures done while standing, yoga classes can range from meditative to highly vigorous and physically taxing. This makes finding the right mind-body exercise possible for anyone. So love yourself, and shape up for a new, balanced uality of life. turn back the hands of time when it comes to our appearance.

Aging takes a three dimensional toll on our outward appearance. We lose bone as we age and this affects our underlying support and structure. It impacts the cheeks, jawline and even the brow and tear trough area. We lose fat and fat pads migrate south, and sometimes protrude. This is often evident under the eyes or with the appearance of jowls. Finally, the skin thins, wrinkles and sags, and is often damaged from the sun, which can results in brown spots, redness and broken capillaries. Therefore, it takes multiple modalities to address the three main components of aging. We are fortunate today to have so many non-invasive ways to treat the aging face and body. Laser, ultrasound and light devices regenerate healthy collagen and clear sun damaged skin. Threadlifts can stimulate collagen, provide a dynamic lift and assist in texture improvements. Sculptra and Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers (such as Juvederm and Restylane) can be used to replace lost volume and contour the face. Neuromodulators (Botox and Dysport) work well on dynamic facial creases for a softer, less wrinkled appearance. Kybella can also be used to decrease pockets of fat under the chin or decrease jowls. All this may seem overwhelming to the average person. That is why we always recommend seeing a professional so you can discuss your goals, get educated and work together to lay out an individualized treatment plan.

Q. What’s the best way to alkalize your body? A. Alkalinity is a hot topic in alternative health. Many wellness pros believe that keeping our body’s pH balanced – through mood, food, fitness and self-care – is key to vibrant and enduring well-being. Disease thrives in an acidic environment, but can’t live when pH is maintained at a neutral level. The typical American diet is acid forming, consisting of foods that have an acidifying effect on the body. Chronic over-acidity removes oxygen from the blood and can result in lowered immunity and premature aging. This can cause your bones to leach minerals or place pressure on your kidneys and liver to maintain this balance.

If you want to dramatically improve your energy, get the body you’ve always wanted, say goodbye to inflammation and bring the 2. Q. I am concerned about my mom now that the holidays are over. The family has gone home, and everything is quiet and lonely. She has now become very reclusive and depressed. What can be done about it? A. Today when the nuclear family often lives many miles away from each other, it can be hard on an elderly person, especially after the holidays. Loved ones are left with feelings of sadness and loneliness after all their visitors have gone. As a resident of Sun City, I frequently hear how important communication and visits are to the elderly. It is imperative to keep in mind that visits are just as essential after the holiday as they were during the holidays. If visiting is an impossibility, then call on a regular basis. They will be excited just to hear your voice. Everyone likes receiving a special card or letter, and by writing them you are letting them know that you are thinking of them. If your loved one is having a hard time adjusting, and showing signs of depression, along with not eating, or sleeping, or taking care of their everyday needs, have them examined by their personal physician to make sure that they are not experiencing a medical issue. It may also be time to consider an in-home care company to provide them with the care and companionship needed to conquer the after the holiday blues. Caregivers can prepare their meals, provide transportation for errands and social activities and assist them to meet their everyday needs.

Four Ways to Save Money on Ski Trips Skiing provides a great chance to enjoy the great outdoors at a time of year when such opportunities are often few and far between. As a result, ski trips can help combat cases of cabin fever that can settle in during winter months. Avid skiers and even novices often cannot wait for the season's first trip to the slopes to enjoy the fresh powder. While an enjoyable recreational escape, people who love to ski would probably do it more often if skiing were more affordable. The following are four ways skiers can save some money when hitting the slopes this season.

Book an all-inclusive trip Lift tickets and equipment rentals can be expensive. Lift tickets are typically valid only for the day of purchase, so such expenses can quickly add up for skiers who want to spend several days on their favorite mountains. Before booking a trip, shop around for all-inclusive offerings that include rentals and lift tickets for the duration of the trip. Skiers who plan to spend several days on the mountain may find it more economical to purchase all-inclusive packages than to pay daily charges for lift tickets and equipment rentals.

Book in advance If all-inclusive packages are impractical or too expensive, skiers can explore paying for equipment rentals and lift tickets in advance. Resorts may offer discounted rental and lift ticket prices to guests who purchase these items online in advance of their stays.

Ski local Skiing locally can save skiing enthusiasts substantial amounts of money while still allowing them to enjoy the slopes. By choosing to visit local mountains, skiers can save on overnight lodging costs. And since resorts are close, skiers won't need to purchase potentially expensive flights. In addition, skiers with their own equipment can save on rentals by bringing their own skis. It's possible to do so when flying to a resort, but that can result in additional baggage and/or packaging fees.

Make it a group effort Many resorts offer discounted rates on passes and activities to 48 January 2018 | azhealthandliving.com

How to Get Fuller Hair This Season Many men and women want to improve the appearance of their hair. But solutions that may have worked at one time of the year may not work after the seasons have changed. When cooler, crisper weather arrives, humidity levels wane and hair can appear flat and lifeless. This can exacerbate already existing conditions of thinning hair. Thinning hair is a concern for men and women alike. As women age, their bodies produce less estrogen, which can cause hair loss and thinning, while some men are genetically predisposed to thinning hair and even balding. But thinning hair may be a byproduct of the weather. When the temperatures outside begin to dip, people tend to spend more time indoors with the heat turned on. Dry air can cause static electricity and flyaway hair. People who wear hats to protect their heads from chilly weather also may find their locks have flattened. Fortunately, there are a number of solutions to flat hair, each of which can improve fullness and body.

Try a plumping product with keratin. Keratin is a strong, fibrous material found in human hair, skin and nails. Depending on the composition of the amino acids in keratin, it can be produced as hard (animal hooves) or soft (skin). Much of the keratin people come in contact with is cells that are already dead, and these cells are protecting the living cells within. Coating hair with a keratin hair treatment can create a thicker layer of keratin to protect and moisturize the hair and help improve fullness.

Find the right volumizing shampoo for your hair. Many volumizing shampoos work by thoroughly cleansing hair to remove any product residue or excess oil that can weigh down hair. In the process, some may actually dry out hair, so it is important to test out different brands to find one that cleans but does not strip hair. Many of the popular drugstore brands of shampoo will have a volumizing alternative, or you can consult with your hair stylist for a salon brand he or she recommends.

Use a styling aid. For many people, washing and drying their hair is not enough to provide volume and lift. Styling aids can add volume to your hair. Volumizing mousse will coat the hair strands and give the appearance of thickness and lift. These products should be worked into the base of the hair where it meets the scalp for best effects. Pomades and certain hair waxes and gels can provide similar results and 50 January 2018 | azhealthandliving.com

may stiffen hair to keep styles in place.

Invest in hair rollers. Hair rollers may seem old fashioned, but they can create timeless, full hair and curls. Velcro or other nonheated rollers, can be gentle on hair. Depending on the size of the roller, hair can be full with bounce or show off more defined curls. Vary roller sizes to create a more interesting, dimensional style. A blast of hairspray while the rollers are in place will help set the style.

Be gentle when styling. Frequent use of chemical styling products or heated appliances can weaken or damage the hair, causing it to break or fall out. This can only add to thin, flat hair problems. Use heated styling appliances sparingly and be gentle on hair when brushing or washing and drying.

Experiment with a new cut. Fine or limp hair may benefit from a shorter, more layered haircut to improve volume and bounce. A stylist can recommend options that will fit with your face and hair goals.

Natural Ways to Fight Dandruff

Dandruff can be embarrassing and sufferers may try various methods to alleviate the symptoms. While relatively harmless, dandruff can cause itching and irritation. The Mayo Clinic says the condition may worsen during the fall and winter when indoor heating can dry out the skin. Leading causes of dandruff include irritated, oily skin that forms flaky white or yellow scales. Failing to shampoo enough may contribute to the buildup of oils and skin cells, which also can cause dandruff. A yeast-like fungus known as malassezia lives on the scalps of many adults, and when it is overproduced, can cause more skin cells to grow, resulting in dandruff. Dry skin and skin sensitivity also may contribute to dandruff. Dandruff typically does not require the care of a doctor. Many over-the-counter shampoos and products designed to alleviate flaking are readily available. Many dandruff products contain coal tar to lessen symptoms, offers the American Academy of Dermatology. People who suspect they have dandruff should speak with a doctor just to rule out dandruff as a symptom of something more serious. After such discussions, those concerned about over-the-counter treatments may want to try these natural remedies.

Lemon juice: Massage two tablespoons of lemon juice into the scalp and rinse with water. Apple cider vinegar: Mix 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar with 1/4 cup water in a spray bottle. Spritz on the scalp and wrap your head with a towel. Allow to penetrate for up to an hour before washing hair as usual. Tea tree oil: Add some tea tree oil to a favorite shampoo and wash normally. Aspirin: Crush two aspirins into a fine powder and add it to your shampoo. Leave the mixture on for one to two minutes and rinse well. Olive oil or coconut oil: These oils can be massaged into the scalp and left to sit. Shampoo normally afterward. Shampoos that contain coconut oil or olive oil can be used as well. azhealthandliving.com |

Star of stage and screen Cate Blanchett’s inspiring career has taken her across the globe in fascinating productions on both stage and screen. The 48-year-old Australian actress and theater director recently starred as Hela, the main villain in “Thor: Ragnarok.” “Cate Blanchett has played a variety of roles over the last quarter century, ranging from Queen Elizabeth I in ‘Elizabeth’ to Galadriel in ‘The Lord Of The Rings’ movies. No role has presented her with as unique a challenge as playing Hela, Thor’s destructive sister. And, she loved every moment of it,” according to an article on www.star2.com. “The chance to finally, in my deep middle age, to get fit, and to wear that much Lycra was really exciting for me,” Blanchett told www.star2.com. In addition to her role in the latest Thor movie, this year, Blanchett is slated to star in an all-female version of “Ocean’s Eleven” called “Ocean’s Eight.” Added to her recent projects, many fans know Blanchett from her roles in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, “The Hobbit” trilogy, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” and many more. For several years, she and her husband (Andrew Upton) were artistic directors and co-CEOs of the Sydney Theatre Company. She made her Broadway debut last year in “The Present.” As if her acting and directing resume doesn’t speak for itself, Blanchett has won numerous accolades over the years, including Academy Awards, BAFTA Awards, AACTA Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards and Golden Globes. 52

A mom of four, ranging in ages from teen to toddler, she is known for being refreshingly honest in media interviews on what it takes to balance all of the hats that she wears. “The 48-year-old actress - who has children Dashiell, 16, Roman, 13, Ignatius, nine, and two-year-old Edith with husband Andrew Upton - doesn't believe it's possible to have it all and she'd be a ‘mess’ if she tried to juggle all the commitment in her life,” according to a recent article on www.celebretainment.com. “Instead, Cate has learned to apologize for her shortcomings and quickly move on.” “That's a marketing myth to keep women feeling bad about themselves, frankly. There are times I say to my kids, to my friends, 'I'm sorry, I'm off my game today,’” Blanchett told Stella magazine. Because she’s often working on one project or another, Blanchett is a red carpet mainstay. Still, she’s quick to remind the media what it means to be a true style icon. “For me, the true icons of style... it’s that for me it’s always those women who’ve been utterly themselves without apology- whose physical presence and their aesthetic is really integrated in a non self-conscious way,” Blanchett told The Telegraph. “Women who know how they look, it’s not all of who they are but just an extension of that, and it’s about women who feel free to wear what they want when they want and how they want to wear it.” According to The Stage, Blanchett might be returning to theater in the United Kingdom after a 5-year hiatus now that she and her family call England home. “It may not be the West End but it‘s my first and truest love the theatre, you are very accountable and connected to your audience as an actor on stage,” she told The Stage. “So yes, now I have moved back to England I would love to be on stage here – whether it’s the West End I don’t know necessarily.” While Blanchett isn’t officially on any social media channels, with as hard working as she is, it shouldn’t be hard to spot her this upcoming year. azhealthandliving.com |January 2018

Canceling Credit Cards: Does it Help or Hurt Credit? Credit cards offer many advantages, including providing a measure of insurance when making purchases and enabling an individual to develop a healthy credit score through prompt payment of balances. According to a 2016 Gallup report, about three out of four adults in the United States have at least one credit card - many people have two or three. While there is no magic figure for how many credit cards is the "right" number to have, those shiny plastic cards can have a significant impact on consumers' financial wellbeing. People looking to reign in spending or consolidate may make the decision to close cards, but not without wondering if closing accounts is beneficial or detrimental to their financial reputations. The experts at Credit Karma say that there is a common belief that closing a credit card account will always negatively impact one's credit rating. But that isn't always the case. Getting the facts about when it can be advantageous to close accounts or keep them open can help consumers maintain strong financial reputations.

Utilization ratio Financial gurus at Bankrate.com say that closing credit cards can affect the percentage of consumers' available credit, which may affect their credit ratings. Closing a particularly high-limit card will increase the percentage of used available credit when spread out across the remaining cards, also known as the utilization ratio. A higher percentage of used available credit can negatively affect credit scores. Consumers who currently carry high credit card balances may be smart to keep existing lines of credit open or request increases on the credit limits of accounts they intend to keep before closing some current accounts.

Annual fees It can be wise to close credit cards with high annual fees if the benefits of the cards are no longer proportionate to the amount spent on the fees. If cards are being held only for perks, it may be possible to find a different card that does not charge an annual fee.

Age of credit history Discover says that if a consumer must close a credit card 56 January 2018 | azhealthandliving.com

account, he or she should avoid closing the oldest one. The longer an account has been open, the better it is for a credit score because it establishes a long credit history. According to FICO, the length of consumers' credit histories account for 15 percent of their credit scores.

Fraud or theft In the event a card is stolen or used fraudulently, consumers may opt to close the account so no other purchases can be made. However, creditors also work around this by keeping accounts open and simply issuing a new card number. If the decision is made to close a credit card, do not do so while there is an available balance; all balances should be paid off before an account is closed. It's also unwise to close a credit card simply to remove poor payment history from one's record. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, negative data such as late payments remain on a report for up to seven years after the account is closed. Closing a credit card account has its advantages and disadvantages. Consumers should investigate the risks before closing a given account.

Six Tips to Sell Your Home Fast Statista indicates that there were 560,000 houses sold in the United States in 2016. The Canadian Real Estate Association said a record 536,118 residential properties changed hands in 2016, marking a 6.3 percent increase from 2015. Homeowners who want to make their properties stand out can take the following steps.

De-personalize the home Homeowners fill their spaces with family photos, heirlooms, personal interests and other conversation pieces. Prospective buyers may not be able to see past personal belongings and may even be distracted by them. For example, buyers who have strong beliefs about animal welfare may not buy a home displaying hunting trophies. Remove personalized items where possible, replacing them with generic items.

Improve the exterior HGTV says that curb appeal is crucial to making a strong first impression. A messy or lackluster landscape can turn buyers away even before they reach the front door. Mow the lawn and make sure shrubbery has been trimmed. Seasonal potted flowers and plants can help make the house look polished. Repair cracks or damaged walkways, and consider a fresh coat of paint on trim around windows and doors. Pressure-wash siding if necessary.

Put things in storage Rent a storage unit to house items that can make a home appear cluttered. Clean out closets and cabinets, so that when buyers "snoop" during appointments or open houses they see orderly storage areas. If closets are brimming with stuff, buyers may assume the house doesn't have enough storage space and move on.

pretty washcloths tied with ribbon, add some scented candles and faux plants and buy bathmats and towels in coordinating tones. Remove extraneous items from kitchen counters and replace them with vases of flowers. In addition, set up dining spaces as if one were sitting down to a meal, and ensure appliances are sparkling clean.

Make it light and bright

Use common 'scents'

Open up all of the drapes and blinds, and turn on overhead lights so the house is well lit. Add table lamps or other fixtures to especially dim rooms.

Skip the fish, bacon, or other aromatic meals for a few days, as such foods can leave lingering aromas. Baked goods, vanilla, and cinnamon might make for more appealing scents.

Create a hotel experience

Making a home sell fast involves preparation and the knowledge that buyers are often greatly influenced by their first impressions.

STAY HEALTHY

SENIOR LIVING By Jeannette Bajalia, president of Woman’s Worth® (www.womans-worth.com) and author of Retirement Done Right and Wi$e Up Women

How to Avoid Becoming a Financial Burden on Your Kids Americans are living longer than ever, which means retirement could last 20 to 30 years for some people – maybe even longer. That’s great for those who remain in reasonably good health and retire with plenty of financial stability. But lengthy life spans also increase the odds that many seniors will deplete their savings, face debilitating health problems and need to turn to their children for financial help or caregiving. That’s a far cry from the kind of retirement they dreamt of over the years. It’s really too late to do much, though, when you’re 80 and your life starts unraveling. That’s why it’s important to plan ahead to get your finances and health in the best shape possible. Among some of the points worth thinking about:

Unanticipated health care costs. It’s estimated that the average married couple will need to pay up to $250,000 in out-of-pocket expenses for health care during their retirement, beyond what Medicare and most Medicare Supplements will pay. We’re beginning to see a lot of cost shifting out of both Medicare programs and private health plans, which means more out-of-pocket health care costs. It’s entirely possible that the savings you thought would allow you to travel or to at least pay all the bills could be gobbled up by medical expenses. As you plan for retirement, you should make it a priority to discuss this concern with your adviser so the two of you can look at what options you might have to try to keep that from happening.

Long-term care planning. When it comes to aging, consider the possibility you might have to receive home health care or live in a nursing home or an assisted-living facility. The costs of such care can be daunting. For example, studies have shown that home health care can cost $50,000 or more per year, and nursing home care can run as high as 90,000 per year. You don’t want your kids to have to pay for that. There are ways to prepare, such as buying a long-term care insurance policy or checking with a financial 62 January 2018

| azhealthandliving.com

professional to help you develop a strategy for protecting your assets from nursing home claim.

Self-care. Not every financial professional may do this, but it’s important to integrate health education and a lot of selfcare into a retirement plan. Spending money on preventive health routines to take care of yourself now can help you avoid significant health problems that lead to even costlier expenses later on. Research is now telling us that longevity is over 70 percent lifestyle. It’s important to older people that they be able to remain independent as long as possible and not have to turn to their children to help. They just need to remember that careful planning is the route to accomplishing that. And one of the planning tools would be to help fund longterm care insurance for your aging parents to keep assets in their estates, so long-term care is not simply for yourself but for your aging parents.

Live Comfortably on Less By MS

Many people look toward retirement with mixed feelings. There is the anticipation and excitement of no longer having to stick to a set schedule. However, there may be some trepidation about living without a steady income. Bloomberg financial experts found the number of Americans aged 65 and older without a disability that weren't in the labor force rose to 800,000 in the fourth quarter of 2016. This has become a long-standing trend of Baby Boomers leaving the workforce and entering retirement. Yet, a Statistics Canada study of people between the ages 60 and 64 who had left long-term employment found 43 percent of them were working again, most within a year of leaving their job. Although boredom may have compelled many of those people to re-enter the workforce, some may have started working again to make ends meet. Researchers found the higher the earnings in one's late 40s, the more likely a retiree is to go back to work. While retirees may need to alter their spending habits, it is possible to live happily on less. Here are some ways to do just that.

Accurately assess home expenses. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling says the cost of homerelated expenses accounts for roughly 45 percent of spending for retirees. Individuals can add up exactly how much their homes are costing them and then decide if downsizing is a practical solution. Downsizing has a host of benefits, not the least of which is reducing housing-related expenses. Invest in health care. Unexpected health care costs can quickly deplete individuals' finances. That's why it is essential to have a solid insurance plan in place. Health care planning also may include thinking ahead to longterm care, such as assisted living and nursing homes. One may have to make concessions elsewhere, but investing in health care can assuage concerns men and women might have about the cost of living in their golden years.

Take advantage of senior discounts. Many restaurants, stores, and service centers offer discounts to seniors. The starting age for discounts may vary from store to store, so always ask before cashing out.

Shop for food differently. Bulk buys may have been

Use alternative transportation. Cars can be expensive.

appropriate for men and women when there were kids running around, but empty nesters can cut back on food expenses. Shopping sales and making more meals at home can help seniors save money. The market research firm NPD Group found that in-home meals cost roughly onethird of what it costs to eat the same food at a restaurant. Save dining out for special occasions.

A budget-friendly alternative to driving is to use public transportation or transportation services provided to seniors free or for nominal fees.

Retirees can make changes to save money without negatively affecting their quality of life. azhealthandliving.com | January 2018

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called friends, red lights called enemies, caution lights called family. You will have flats called jobs. But, if you have a spare called determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith and a driver named Jesus—you will make it to a place called success.” – Author Unknown
