"I did my research online for the practices in Arizona that offer varicose vein removal. I knew I wanted the EVLT treatment and wanted the procedure done by a Physician, not a cosmetic place. I narrowed it down to three Physicians and chose Dr. Sharma for his experience. I could not be more pleased with my experience at Arizona Vein & Laser Institute. Dr. Sharma is a wonderful physician. As he is performing the procedure, he explains what he is doing and is so concerned about making you feel comfortable. As for his staff, I cannot say enough good words. One thing I have learned in my lifetime is that your employees are only as good as you are. Dr. Sharma, you have a wonderful staff which says alot about you as an employer. I spent many office visits with them and every time they were pleasant, caring and professional. I was impressed by the way they worked as a team with Dr. Sharma. Thank you so much!" Joy A.

"I had called your office on a Monday morning to see if I could be fit in for an appointment as soon as possible because of a complication I had over the weekend. Being a new patient and never being seen at your office before it didn't matter because the woman who answered was not only kind, friendly and sypmathetic of my situation, but she was able to fit me in that very same afternoon. I have to say how incredibly impressed I was with the entire staff at this office but even more so with Dr. Sharma and Dr. Hecht. Their bedside manners are second to none. Thank you!" Scott Schrimp

NORTH PHOENIX Charles I. Hecht M.D., FACS Dr. Hecht received his M.D. degree from State University of New York Upstate Medical University. He did his residency in General Surgery at Ohio State University Hospital. He has performed major surgeries at the area hospitals for over 25 years before joining Arizona Vein & Laser Institute to dedicate to the treatment of venous disease.

It’s not in your head.

Bring more pleasure back into your life &

BECOME A MORE INTIMATE YOU!

T

he loss of sexual pleasure and enjoyment is not in your head. Pregnancy, childbirth, perimenopause, menopause, and the natural aging process all have an impact on the appearance, tightness, and lubrication of a woman’s vagina. These

changes can all diminish a woman’s pleasure and desire for sexual intimacy. Lack of sexual intimacy can have a detrimental effect on a woman’s well-being, overall happiness, and contentment in a relationship-by both partners! Don’t let discomfort hinder your pleasure at any age. Additional benefits of the procedure are visible plumpness and improved aesthetic appearance as well as treatment of urinary leakage or stress incontinence. What do you do? Now there’s a pain-free, risk-free, non-surgical solution that brings immediate relief with no side effects. It’s ThermiVa-a better alternative to invasive and risky vaginal surgery, which is painful and requires a long, sex-free recovery period-not exactly the first step you want to take in rebuilding intimacy and sexual satisfaction. What is ThermiVa? ThermiVa treatments are administered in a series of three appointments, spaced 4 weeks apart. Each one is only about 30 minutes and requires no downtime afterward, women are able to return to normal activities as soon as they walk out and many report having improved intimacy that night with both parties noticing a difference! ThermiVa delivers comfortable controlled heat, generated by radiofrequency through a small proble. This heat causes tissues to contract and restores tightness, while stimulating the production of collagen to increase moisture and lubrication. Both of which lead to an improved vaginal appearance and function leading to enhanced intimacy, confidence, and ultimately satisfaction. This regenerated pelvic floor strength is also what aids in issues of urinary stress incontinence.

After all, what other treatment has a 100% patient satisfaction rating?

Relief is right here in the West Valley Dr. Kukurin was named a Top Chiropractor by the Consumers Research Council of America. He is listed in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare. With over 20 years of experience using acupuncture, chiropracticand science based nutritional therapies, the results produced by our methods have been featured on local TV newscasts, published in scientific journals, indexed in the National Library of Medicine and have been presented Knee Pain at medical conferences at Johns Hopkins and the Peripheral Nerve Society.

Diabetic Neuropathy, Peripheral Neuropathy Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, Plantar Fasciitis If you are suffering from lower back, buttocks and or leg pain or your feet or legs are cramping, numb or burning especially at night, you almost certainly have a condition which involves the nerves of the legs. The largest nerve in the body, the sciatic nerve (pictured in red to the right), starts in the lower back, runs through the muscles of the buttocks and down to the tip of the toes. If this nerve gets irritated, you can experience really terrible pain anywhere along the course of the nerve. You may also experience burning, numbness and odd sensations in your muscles. Irritation of this nerve may produce severe cramping or crawling sensations in your muscles. Of course, your back and leg pain can be caused by a pinched nerve in your lower back. This can be from a vertebra that is out of place, it can be caused by a slipped disc or it can be caused by spinal stenosis or any combination of these problems. Each of these conditions, bad discs, spinal stenosis or displaced vertebrae have very different treatments. Knowing exactly why you have your back and leg troubles is absolutely essential for effective care.

Headaches, Vertigo, TMJ, Migraines, Sinus Headache Neck and Shoulder Pain, Pinched Nerves, Tennis Elbow and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Spinal Stenosis, Sciatica, Lower Back, Hip and Leg Pain

So how do you find results? The answer is called Integrative Neurology. Neurology is the study of the nerves. This allows us to diagnose tough nerve conditions like spinal stenosis, disc problems and neuropathy. What happens next truly separates our integrative neurology approach from anything else available to help correct lower back, hip, leg and foot problems. We have pioneered techniques to decompress nerves, but also use a number of natural substances that have been shown in recent scientific studies to help nerves re-grow and repair. There are no current drugs that can do this. But that’s not all. We combine special electrical stimulation techniques with acupuncture. A combination that has been shown to correct abnormal nerve function and promote nerve repair. There simply is no better or more comprehensive system for diagnosing and correcting the cause of spinal stenosis, neuropathy and other conditions that cause lower back, hip and leg pain and numbness. “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.”~Ephesians 4:32 Welcome to our May issue! This month women worldwide will be celebrated for their roles in many lives. Many passages in the Bible reveal the role that God designed for women. These passages reveal many virtues of a woman committed to building a Godly legacy for her family. Here are a few Bible verses to encourage you to fulfill God’s will. Proverbs 14:1 The wise woman builds her house, But the foolish pulls it down with her hands. 1 Timothy 2:9-10 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. Proverbs 31:30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. Proverbs 31:20-21 She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. Proverbs 31:26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. Matthew 6:33-34 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Proverbs 31:28 Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her:

Ephesians 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” Proverbs 11:16 A gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong men retain riches. Psalm 128:1-2 Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord; that walketh in his ways. For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee. Deuteronomy 4:9 Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. And teach them to your children and your grandchildren, Philippians 2:14-15 Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, Colossians 3:24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. Proverbs 31:25 Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. Until next time, Wishing you a Happy Mother's Day!

By Alison Bailin Batz

The Bob & Renee Parsons Leadership Center for Girls & Women at Camp South Mountain New facility benefits local Girl Scouts and the community at large Recently, the South Mountain community welcomed a very special new neighbor: The Bob & Renee Parsons Leadership Center for Girls & Women at Camp South Mountain. Located on 14.5 acres at 1611 E. Dobbins Road in Phoenix, The Parsons Leadership Center is the Girl Scouts–Arizona Cactus-Pine Council’s (GSACPC) $18 million year-round urban program center with camp appeal and fully ADA accessible. This summer, The Parsons Leadership Center will host 71 camp sessions and offer both day and residential options. Girls will enjoy swimming, environmental education, archery, STEM, along with traditional camp activities. “Our decision to transform our almost 70-year-old camp property in South Mountain into a leadership center emerged from our desire to expand our capacity to serve more girls, especially underserved populations, and better serve our existing members, of whom 85% live in the metro-Phoenix area,” says Tamara Woodbury, CEO of GSACPC. The Parsons Leadership Center offers spaces for large and small meetings and trainings, tent and cabin camping, a demonstration kitchen and kitchen garden, two pools, a Girl Scout museum and shop, staff offices, a playing field and archery range, campfire circle, and labyrinths. Adult leaders and volunteers will also benefit from the leadership and skill-building training offered at the center, and the local council sees it helping to facilitate partnerships with surrounding community groups, local organizations and schools. “We are grateful for the many donors who have invested in this project to date, particularly The Bob & Renee Parsons

Foundation whose support has been instrumental in making this project a reality. Their $5 million donation – in fact – is the largest in the 105-year history of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A.,” says Christina Spicer, Senior Associate of Fund Development at GSACPC. Other notable gifts include those from The Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust, The Kemper and Ethel Marley Foundation, and the Girl Scouts themselves, who raised more than $1 million through their cookie sales. The Emerald Foundation provided the first gift to ensure the campus would be ADA accessible. “Bob and I are passionate about giving support to organizations making a lasting difference in the community, and that’s what the Girls Scouts are doing here,” says businesswoman and philanthropist Renee Parsons. “The lessons these young girls are learning will empower them to grow into confident women and future leaders.” Marlene Imirzian, the lead architect and founder of Marlene Imirzian & Associates, was a Girl Scout in her youth and understands the impact Girl Scouting has on girls’ lives.

Lost Our Home Pet Rescue Providing compassionate services to Valley pets and people in crisis Have you ever thought about what you would do with your pets if you were suddenly faced with a crisis that prevented you from caring for them temporarily? Job loss, illness, injury, home disaster and even losing a family member are just some of the unexpected hardships that can leave you not knowing what to do with your fourlegged companion. The truth is that many people do not plan or even want to think about the unexpected. Valley residents Nick and Katie lost their home unexpectedly, leaving them unable to care for Rocco, their beloved family dog. As heartbreaking as it was, they thought their only choice was to give Rocco up to a shelter, never to be seen by them again. That’s why they were so were ecstatic when they found out about Lost Our Home Pet Rescue’s Temporary Care Program and that Rocco could stay there while they got back on their feet. After just a few weeks of staying at the shelter and making many new friends with the staff and volunteers, it was time for Rocco to go home. Rocco’s family had found a new home and the day they were reunited was one of the happiest days of their lives. They were so excited to finally be back together again as a family and show Rocco their new home. “Rocco was only in temporary care for about a month, but it felt like an eternity,” Katie says. “We will forever be grateful to the Lost Our Home staff and volunteers who gave our Rocco the best care and made it possible for us to remain a family.” When you think of an animal rescue or pet shelter, images of animals being taken in, rescued and put up for adoption likely come to mind. And while Lost Our Home certainly does those things, it’s just one part of the work they are doing in the community.

Jodi Polanski created Lost Our Home Pet Rescue in 2008 as a response to the thousands of pets in need as a result of the economic downturn and Phoenix-area foreclosure crisis. During that time, many pets were abandoned in foreclosed homes, often times without food and water. Others, having no choice, were forced to give up their pets to shelters. Soon after Lost Our Home began, it became apparent that the need was so much greater than thought and quickly expanded to offer additional programs for pets and pet parents:

Temporary Care Program: Provides up to 90 days of

complete care for pets when their pet parents experience a life hardship and are unable to care for them temporarily. This relieves pet parents of the overwhelming fear of losing their pet and, in turn, allows them to solely focus on regaining stability in their lives so they can be reunited with their pet.

Animal Rescue Program for Abandoned/Owner Surrendered Pets: Provides medical care, shelter and food, all while trying to find forever loving homes for pets.

Pet Food Bank Program and Animeals on Wheels: Provides pet food and supplies to financially struggling individuals so they do not have to give their pets up simply because they cannot afford pet food during their time of need. 16 May 2017 | azhealthandliving.com

Volunteers deliver supplies for those without transportation.

Low Income Boarding Program: Offers discounted boarding for low income pet parents who cannot afford traditional boarding.

Pet Friendly Rental Program: Realtor volunteers locate

and negotiate pet-friendly rentals for harder to place situations and donate 100% of their commission to cover pet deposits.

campus so that women escaping domestic violence can keep their pets with them while they heal. “Animals also suffer, with the vast majority of pets left behind winding up injured, otherwise neglected or dead,” says Polanski. “There's a big connection between domestic violence and pet abuse. The partnership has helped many domestic violence victims and their pets. We’re very proud to be helping the community in so many ways.”

Lost Our Home Pet Rescue is also distinctive for their partnership with Sojourner Center in Phoenix, one of the largest domestic violence shelters in the U.S. Together, they opened and manage a Pet Companion Shelter on their

Open to the public At Active Life, we use advanced technologies and non-invasive treatment options while empowering our patients with the knowledge necessary to understand their pain and how to control it. WHAT OUR PATIENTS SAY:

“Best medical facility and staff in the Valley, hands down, in my opinion. Highly recommend them if you need help due to chronic pain.” – Nancy K. “Active Life is the most amazing group of professionals I have encountered in all my years dealing with pain. From Dr.s Lundquist & Smith to the PA's, techs, receptionists, et al, these are people I highly recommend and have done so for years. I carry their cards in both my purse and saddlebag when horseback riding to give out when I meet people experiencing severe pain.” – Cindy E. “I’ve been competing in strength athletics since the age of 15 and have been competing at a professional level for the last 5 years. It wasn’t until 2014 that I needed to seek treatment for a patella tendon tear that I received while competing at the Commerce World’s Strongest Man in China. I had only heard about PRP treatments and the great benefits that it could have on one’s injuries - that’s when I found Dr. Lundquist at Active Life Physical Medicine & Pain Center in Avondale, Arizona. To this day, I have received Orthovisc injections to both knees along with PRP. The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST), invented and patented by John Chao, DDS, MADG, is a scalpel-free, suture-free procedure for correcting gum recession. During the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique™, a needle is used to make a small hole in the patient’s existing gum tissue. Through this pinhole, special instruments are used to gently loosen the gum tissue. These tools help expand and slide the gumline to cover the exposed root structure. There are no grafts, no sutures, and no incisions needed with the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique™. It simply involves the adjustment of the existing tissue. Dr. Chang and Dr. Svans were two of the first dentists in Arizona and the United States trained and certified as Pinhole Surgical Technique™ Providers. Arthritis Linked to Another Condition People who see dermatologists for the skin condition psoriasis should not take the presence of joint aches and pains lightly, as the two things might be connected. The National Psoriasis Foundation notes that psoriasis is a precursor to psoriatic arthritis in 30 percent of patients.

What is psoriatic arthritis? Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition that affects the rate of skin cell reproduction. People with psoriasis may experience redness, itchiness and raised bumps (plaques) of skin on various areas of their bodies. Psoriatic arthritis is a chronic form of arthritis that typically occurs in people with skin psoriasis, but also can be present in those without the skin condition, but particularly among those who have relatives with psoriasis. The American College of Rheumatology says that psoriatic arthritis typically affects the large joints, especially the lower extremities, distal joints of the fingers and toes and the back and sacroiliac joints of the pelvis. Early recognition, diagnosis and treatment of psoriatic arthritis are crucial to relieving inflammation and preventing permanent joint damage.

Symptoms Symptoms of psoriatic arthritis can develop gradually or quickly, and some symptoms can be severe. NPF indicates that common symptoms of psoriatic arthritis include: · Morning stiffness and tiredness · Tenderness, pain and swelling over tendons · Swollen fingers and toes · Reduced range of motion · Nail changes, including pitting · Redness and pain in the eyes 30 May 2017 | azhealthandliving.com

Symptoms of psoriatic arthritis are similar to rheumatoid arthritis, gout and reactive arthritis. Doctors will rule out other symptoms that may be indicative of those conditions. The American College of Rheumatology also indicates that psoriatic arthritis is typically blood test negative. The diagnosis is typically made by a rheumatologist after reviewing a clinical history and performing a physical exam.

Treatment Doctors will need to assess symptoms before deciding on a course of treatment. Mild cases may respond to over-the-counter, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen. However, antirheumatic drugs and newer biologic drugs may be prescribed to treat more aggressive cases of psoriatic arthritis. Corticosteroid injections can be useful for swollen joints, and surgery may be necessary to repair badly damaged joints. Individuals who suspect their arthritis may be linked to psoriasis can first speak with a dermatologist or primary care physician. The NPF also offers a screening tool at www.psoriasis.org/psa-screening.

Microcephaly Brought Into the Limelight By MS

Conception and childbirth are miracles of life. While parents experience many joys during pregnancy and delivery, they must discuss potentially uncomfortable conversations that need to be addressed. This includes the potential that babies will born with birth defects. Over the last year, microcephaly, a rare but serious disability, has garnered substantial attention. Microcephaly is a neurological condition in which an infant's head is significantly smaller than the heads of other children of the same age and sex, advises The Mayo Clinic. The condition is typically the result of the brain developing abnormally in the womb or not growing as it is supposed to after birth. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says microcephaly can be an isolated condition, or it can occur in combination with other major birth defects. Depending on the severity of the condition, children with microcephaly can face any number of symptoms. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, symptoms of microcephaly include impaired cognitive development, delayed motor functions, dwarfism, seizures, difficulties with balance and other neurological abnormalities. Although microcephaly is rare, according to the National Birth Defects Prevention Network, it may become more common. That's because microcephaly has been linked to mothers who were exposed to the Zika virus while pregnant. Exposure to in utero substance abuse, as well as genetic or chromosomal issues, also can lead to microcephaly. Unfortunately, no treatment exists to return a child's head and brain to normal size. Instead, treatment focuses on reducing the impact associated with neurological disabilities and subsequent physical disabilities. Early childhood intervention programs that include speech, physical, and occupational therapy may be part of a child's course of treatment. Certain medications can be prescribed to help with seizures or hyperactivity. Thanks to its link to the Zika virus, microcephaly has garnered considerable attention over the last year-plus. Though still rare, microcephaly is something expecting parents and couples planning to have children should familiarize themselves with. azhealthandliving.com |May 2017

Symptoms of Postpartum Depression For many women, the joy of welcoming a new baby into the world is enough to overlook all of the sacrifices and physical changes they must make and go through while pregnant. While that joy is unrivaled, women dealing with postpartum depression may find their initial weeks or months of motherhood are not how they imagined they would be before giving birth. Women suffering from postpartum depression, a mood disorder that affects women after childbirth, often deal with extreme feelings of sadness that interfere with their ability to care for themselves, their families and their new babies. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, there is no single cause of postpartum depression, which is likely the result of a combination of factors, some of which are physical and others that are emotional. The NIMH points out that postpartum depression does not result from something a mother does or does not do, but may be traced to hormonal changes in a woman's body that occur after giving birth. After childbirth, a woman's estrogen and progesterone levels quickly drop, potentially triggering mood swings. When coupled with the inability to get adequate rest that many women experience after childbirth, these hormonal changes can contribute to symptoms of postpartum depression.

· Losing interest in activities that are usually enjoyable

Recognizing postpartum depression is not always so simple. For example, many women experience feelings of exhaustion after giving birth, but that does not mean they are suffering from postpartum depression. The following are some of the more common symptoms of postpartum depression, courtesy of the NIMH.

· Suffering from physical aches and pains, including frequent headaches, stomach problems and muscle pain

· Feeling sad, hopeless, empty or overwhelmed

· Having trouble bonding or forming an emotional attachment with her baby

· Crying more often than usual or for no apparent reason · Worrying or feeling overly anxious · Feeling moody, irritable or restless · Oversleeping or being unable to sleep even when her baby is asleep · Having trouble concentrating, remembering details and making decisions · Experiencing anger or rage 32 May 2017| azhealthandliving.com

· Eating too little or too much · Withdrawing from or avoiding friends and family

· Persistently doubting her ability to care for her baby · Thinking about harming herself or her baby While those are common symptoms of postpartum depression, women and their families should recognize that not all women’s experiences with postpartum depression will be similar. Only health care providers can diagnose postpartum depression, and women or their loved ones who suspect the disorder might be affecting them or their loved one should consult a physician right away. More information is available at www.nimh.gov.

Bridging the Distance on Mother's Day By MS

Many modern families are spread out across the country if not the globe. Some people move away from family to further their careers, while others are called upon to care for others. Children may separate from their parents to witness new travel experiences. Military service may call individuals away from home as well. Distance can make it challenging to spend time together for major holidays and other special occasions - like Mother's Day. But Mother's Day can still be special even if Mom lives hundreds or thousands of miles away.

Embrace technology Technology helps break down some of the barriers created by distance. While phone calls were once the way to keep in touch, many people now utilize various forms of digital communication. Someone who lives across different time zones can talk through texting or the various social media avenues available on computers, phones and tablets. Video apps like Skype and FaceTime enable you to video chat with others in real time. Come Mother's Day, connect with mom via such apps so you can watch her open up her gifts.

Reconnect with home If Mom is the one who ventured from home, help her to reconnect with her hometown or another place she feels attached to. Ship her some favorite regional foods that can only be bought in town. Make a photo or video montage of places of interest in town. These little touches of home can mean the world to her.

Create a special day Even if you do not live near your mother, you can still plan a fun day for her in her town. Make reservations for a spa, hair salon or other sources of pampering and surprise her with all the details. azhealthandliving.com |May 2017

Q. Are there invisible hearing aids Q. How can integrative neurology without batteries? help with anxiety, depression and mood disorders? A. Lyric® Hearing Aids are a hassle-free, 100 percent invisible hearing solution. A. It is normal to have fluctuations in Lyric hearing aids are like contact lenses for the ear. Lyric devices can be worn 24/7 for two months at a time. They are placed very close to the eardrum and are worn all day every day. They can be worn in the shower, while exercising, sleeping and while awake. Most individuals who wear Lyric are scheduled for follow-up appointments every two months to remove the device and replace it with a new one. Your audiologist can program lyric, so it is tailored for your loss. It works great for mild to moderate hearing loss. Lyric is placed deep in the canal and uses the natural acoustic properties of the ear to filter sound. This works similar to someone with normal hearing. Most individuals using Lyric devices love the way it sounds, and they love the hassle free features that go with it. Lyric is also a great device for individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Lyric can be a completely life changing device. Individuals who have previously worn hearing aids love not having to worry about maintenance, cleaning, and storage of the devices. They are impossible to lose. When you wear aids 24/7, it is just one less thing you have to think about.

mood. It is part of the human experience. However being sad day after day, anxious or even happy for that matter is not considered normal. When abnormal mood episodes interfere with work, recreation and relationships there is a problem that needs attention.

You may not be aware of it, but your mood is a product of the delicate balance of chemicals in your brain called neurotransmitters. Some of these chemicals make you happy and some make you sad. Others make you feel calm while others make you feel anxious. Having the proper balance of these chemicals is important to your emotional health. Integrative neurology combines the knowledge of medical neurology (the study of the brain and nerves) with complementary techniques like acupuncture, chiropractic and herbals. Integrative neurology offers some unique perspectives in identifying imbalances in neurotransmitters and then helping the body bring the chemistry of the nervous system into balance. This can have a profound impact on mood and ultimately quality of life. Did you know that the food you eat can influence the levels of various neurotransmitters in the brain? So the old saying, “You are what you eat” is certainly true when it comes to your emotional health. Other cutting edge techniques that involve electrical stimulation of acupuncture points can also change brain chemistry and activation of those parts of the brain that deal with emotions. This means that integrative neurology techniques have much to offer patients with mood disorders. –Dr. Kukurin Kukurin Chiropractic, Acupuncture & Nutrition Network 623.547.4727

Q. Is there a new treatment for spider veins? A. There’s now a new approach to treating

vascular and benign pigmented conditions. Now men and women alike are making unsightly facial and leg veins a thing of the past. With the most advanced technology, a laser can safely and effectively treat a wide range of vascular and benign pigmented conditions on men and women of all skin tones.

This new laser system provides treatment of a variety of vascular and benign pigmented skin conditions. Many skin conditions manifest in the form of broken or abnormal blood vessels in the skin, as is the case with rosacea, in which the facial blood vessels dilate excessively causing redness and flushing. This laser treats vascular conditions by administering a unique high power green laser that is absorbed by the abnormal blood vessels in the skin. The laser heats the abnormal vessels causing the vein walls to collapse and seal shut. Over time, the vessels will no longer be visible. Several treatments may be necessary to achieve the desired result. This laser has been shown effective at treating a number of conditions, including rosacea, spider veins, leg veins, port wine stains, cherry angiomas, and benign pigmented lesions such as sunspots. The laser treats mild and severe forms of these conditions. The system may also have a cosmetic benefit for patients who have skin lesions or scars from past injuries or surgeries.

age?

Q. My child doesn’t seem to be getting

A. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Breast cancer is most common among women. It is the second leading cause of death among women, but is the most common cause of death among women worldwide. In the U.S., over 220 thousand women annually will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 40 thousand will die of the disease. Although rare amongst men, 2150 men will be diagnosed and 410 will die each year.

A. As toddlers grow and develop, parents may wonder whether their speaking skills and patterns are normal for their age. Children develop speech and language skills throughout their preschool years. Because this is a time of rapid development, it is important not to ignore perceived delays. By the age of three a child should be able to:

A. If your child has any of the following

There has been a gradual reduction in female cancer rates in women aged 50 and older. Perhaps secondary to a decline in prescribing hormone replacement therapy after menopause. Death rates have also seen a decline since 1990 due to better screening, early detection, increased awareness and improvements in treatment options. Less than 1 percent of all breast cancer cases develop in men, approximately 1 in a thousand. Breast cancer in men usually will be detected at a later stage and carry a higher mortality rate. The cancer will usually present as a hard lump underneath the nipple and areola. Risk factors can be radiation exposure, high levels of the estrogen hormone, or a family history of breast cancer, especially if related to the BRCA2 gene. Breast cancer can exhibit the same symptoms among men and women, including a lump. Anyone who detects anything unusual about their breasts, male or female, should contact their physician immediately. Early detection of breast cancer increases treatment options and often reduces the risk of dying from breast cancer. – Dr. Serrano Precision Surgery, Inc. 602.547.3300

he/she could suffer from sleep-disordered breathing: • Sleeps in an abnormal position • Snores • Sweats heavily during sleep • Is difficult to wake up • Has headaches • Is irritable • Falls asleep or daydreams in school • Wets the bed • Has been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) In children, sometimes the problem results from swollen tonsils and/or adenoids that block the airway. It can also be caused by dental problems because malocclusion (misalignment) of the teeth is believed to affect the positioning of the airway. Even swollen nasal passages could cause your child problems breathing during sleep. In these cases, it’s a good idea to talk to your child’s pediatrician, his dentist and an ear, nose and throat specialist. If your child is sleeping poorly and it isn’t due to a sleep-disordered breathing problem, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends a relaxing setting at bedtime— low lights and quiet. Don’t substitute watching television or videos for personal interaction with your child before bedtime.

Q. Why do women love JUVÉDERM® Q. How do I choose the right radiologist and medical imaging facility? A. Lumineers are similar to veneers but VOLBELLA®? require less preparation and little to no A. JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® is an FDA- A. As a patient, you have a choice in your Q. What are lumineers?

removal of enamel from the surface of the tooth. Both types of veneers cover the visible portions of the teeth, repair imperfections, straighten and lengthen teeth, conceal stains or discoloration, and are naturally stain resistant. However, there are distinct differences between the two types of veneers. Like traditional veneers, Lumineers are designed to give you a beautiful, natural smile. However, unlike traditional veneers, Lumineers do not require any shots, drilling, or pain. And, most importantly, because no enamel is removed from the teeth, Lumineers are reversible!

Lumineers are custom-made like traditional porcelain veneers to fit each individual’s mouth. However, Lumineers are ultra-thin (only about 0.2mm) and highly translucent. This translucence allows them to replicate the natural appearance of enamel. They are also very durable and can last up to 20 years. The procedure takes only two office visits and approximately one hour to place the Lumineers. There is no pain involved in the procedure as the Lumineers are so thin that little to no enamel will need to be removed, completely eliminating the need for needles and local anesthesia. You will need to see your dentist to determine if you are a good candidate for Lumineers. Those who have very dark stains or discoloration will not be good candidates as the dark color may show through the ultra-thin layer of Lumineers. Also, those with a very “tight bite” or who grind or clench their teeth are not good candidates. Those who do not qualify for Lumineers may be good candidates for porcelain veneers and should talk to their doctor about their options. – Dr. Chang SC Dental Group 623.242.1235

Q. What can I do to treat osteoarthritis? A. Although there are many factors that contribute to osteoarthritis, we now know that this molecule, alpha 2 macroglobulin (A2M), protects the joint space from deteriorating. When there is not enough of the molecule, osteoarthritis may start to occur. Normally there are destructive enzymes present in an inflamed joint and the body has a certain threshold that it can take care of without leading to osteoarthritis. A2M has an important role in binding proteases (destructive enzymes). This decreases inflammation and pain and assists in healing. There are many different treatments available for arthritis that are considered traditional and can provide relief such as cortisone, gel injections, physical therapy, modalities, and medications. None of these options come from your own body. A2M comes from your own body by a blood draw and the A2M is then concentrated and injected back into the affected area. In order to know if A2M is right for you, a sample of your synovial fluid must be aspirated from your joint and examined for the biomarker Fibronectin-Aggrecan Complex (FAC). A2M injections are done prior to injecting any regenerative treatment to optimize its effectiveness. Regenerative treatments such as Platelet rich plasma, adipose derived stem cells, bone marrow derived stem cells, amniotic fluid and prolotherapy “take” better when the chemical environment is friendlier.

Q. What can I do to get a good night’s sleep? A. It is a new year and we all want to make positive changes in our lives. Making healthy food choices and getting enough restorative sleep should be on our to-do list. Adequate rest will make us happier so we can have more fun and better enjoy our family, neighbors, co-workers and friends. Poor sleep creates many negative issues that can arise, including impaired judgement, weight gain, low immunity, poor memory and aging skin. One in five accidents is caused by drowsy drivers with a slower reaction time. Lack of sleep also gives you more risk for heart issues, diabetes, cancer and other health related conditions. Some suggestions for a better night sleep include: Shut off all devices at least an hour before bed, take a warm shower, write down things to deal with tomorrow and slow even breathing will help relax you. Limit caffeine to early in the day. A dark, cool room and a regular bedtime schedule will help regulate your body to get your 7 to 9 hours. In addition to these tips, you can try other options, such as a sleep bracelet.

These injections should be done by a physician who has an intimate understanding of the musculoskeletal anatomy.

Q. How can I tighten aging skin on my body, reduce cellulite and lose inches by summer? A. It seems inevitable that, as we age, our problem areas seem to worsen year after year. Many people are displeased with aspects of their body, but are not willing to risk aggressive or painful procedures to get results. Diet, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle should always be a starting point, but sometimes we need a "kick start" or a little help to speed results. Furthermore, with aging and weight loss, we need to consider skin tightening when losing weight. Fortunately, there a number of non-invasive and highly effective procedures that will enable individuals to achieve their desired results with no downtime and minimal discomfort. If losing inches is the goal then FDA approved Non-Invasive Body Contouring Procedures, such as Sculpsure, can achieve significant results. Body Contouring and Fat Reduction with one of our fat cell freezing or fat cell heating devices can permanently de-bulk large areas or sculpt your body the way you want. With both of these devices we are able to address almost any area of the body. If cellulite or skin tightening is the primary concern than we recommend Velashape ™ III, its powerful deep thermal energy irons out cellulite and helps to tighten skin. It can also be combined with Body Contouring for amazing results. Other concerns such as wrinkly saggy knees, wrinkly chests or a needed lift to the butt can be addressed with Sculptra and PDO Threads. A consultation is always the best way to create an individualized body-contouring plan to achieve your summer body.

after we look at how Medicare benefits are provided and what the out of pocket risks actually are. Original Medicare consists of two “parts.” Part A covers hospitalization. In 2017 the Part A deductible is $1,316. This is the amount Medicare beneficiaries are required to satisfy when admitted to a hospital. On rare occasions more than one deductible has been required within a 12month period. Part A will also provide up to 100 days in a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) after a 3-day “in-patient” hospitalization. The first 20 days are paid in full, days 21 – 100 would require a co-payment of $164.50 per day equaling $13,160 if a prolonged stay was required. Medicare will not provide coverage in a SNF after a continuous stay of 100 days. Part B of Medicare covers “medical” expenses. After the annual deductible of $183, an additional 20% co-insurance is required for all services billed under Part B. It’s also important to know that original Medicare does not provide coverage for prescription drugs, commonly referred to as Part D. Most Medicare beneficiaries are not comfortable with the out-of-pocket risk of only having original Medicare. The Supplement (Medigap) policy was designed to reduce or eliminate the deductibles and co-insurance costs of traditional Medicare. Unless enrollment occurs during the sixmonth ”Open Enrollment Period,” premiums are determined by age, plan chosen and health conditions. I recommend talking with a trusted professional who will assess your individual needs and provide options for your health care.

RELATIONSHIPS & PARENTING

BE PRESENT

By MS

Pros and Cons of Bed Sharing Many couples sleep in the same bed as their partners, although there are plenty of couples who attest to the benefits of sleeping separately. When children are introduced into the family, sleeping arrangements may be revised once more. Some parents opt to have their child share their same bed space, while others feel children should be trained early to enjoy their own beds. The following is a look at the pros and cons of bed sharing. Pros Proponents of bed sharing say that it strengthens the emotional bond between parent and child. Some studies suggest that the proximity to a parent may also help an infant's immature nervous system learn to self-regulate during sleep and lessen anxiety. Many mothers sleep with their children to facilitate feedings. It can make nighttime breast-feeding more convenient and also may help a mother's milk production increase with more frequent nighttime breast-feeding. Bed sharing is the norm in many countries outside of North America. Children in Asia sometimes co-sleep with their parents into adolescence. Japan has one of the lowest infant mortality rates in the world. When sleeping side-by-side, a baby may synchronize breathing and heart rates with his or her parents. The familiar warmth of a parent also can naturally calm a baby. For those who decide to share a bed, certain safety precautions can help remove risk. 路 Sleep on a firm mattress with a minimal amount of bed linens. 路 Tie up long hair and remove jewelry. 路 Do not drink alcohol or take drugs before bed, as these can affect depth of slumber. 路 Consider a co-sleeper crib, which attaches to the bed so the child is safer. 44 May 2017

| azhealthandliving.com

Cons There are many things to consider before sharing a bed with a baby, and safety is of the utmost concern when doing so. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that babies should sleep in the same room as their parents for the first six months, or up to a year, of life, but not in the same bed, as adults may unknowingly trap a baby in the linens or in the space between the bed and wall. Parents also may roll over onto the child if they are sharing a bed. Some studies also suggest co-sleeping increases the risk of SIDS. Parents also must consider the potential for nighttime waking before sharing their beds with children. Children who share a bed with their parents, whether infants or toddlers, may cause parents to spend extra time awake. This is especially true for light sleepers who can be awakened by the slightest sounds or movements. Some parenting experts also say that sleeping with a child may result in reduced opportunities for self-soothing. Super-attentive parents may pick up or feed the baby when it's not necessary to do so. Also, a child who requires nighttime parental comfort to sleep may then require it in the daytime to nap as well.

Five Ways to Prevent Sibling Arguments By MS

Brothers and sisters can be great friends, and those friendships often grow stronger with age. However, when kids are young, those fun and friendly relationships are not always so easy to come by. Arguments and fights may occur as sibling rivalry rear its ugly head, and parents may be unsure how to resolve the conflicts. Keeping peace in the family may require some of these strategies.

Encourage positive remarks. Encourage siblings to say

a nice thing about each other around the dinner table. Acknowledging what they like about a sibling can help kids focus on the positives of being a brother or sister.

Eliminate "mini-parents." It is the adults' job, not kids',

to reprimand or show direction to children. When one child starts parenting another, parents must nip that in the bud as quickly as possible.

Employ reverse psychology. Force the children to

spend no time together one day. Actually ban interaction among siblings if they are prone to constant fights. Going without that company can illustrate just how much they miss being together.

Reward bickering and fussing with chores. Reward

arguments with chores. If children have time to argue, they are probably not engaged in productive work. Knowing extra chores will be the result of arguing can help limit the number of fights.

Fair doesn't mean identical. Children sometimes pick

fights if they think a sibling is getting more attention from their mother and/or father than they are. Kids need different things in a relationship and parents can recognize that carbon-copy activities will not help quell that feeling of unfairness. azhealthandliving.com |May 2017

FITNESS, NUTRITION & SPORTS

STAY ACTIVE & FIT

By MS

Understanding and Treating Cellulite A lot of misinformation is circulating about cellulite, a condition that affects around 90 percent of women at some point in their lives. Separating the cellulite fact from fiction can help those interested in finding out what causes it and how to make it less noticeable. Cellulite is easy to recognize. It often forms as dimpled skin or bumpy areas on the thighs and buttocks. Sometimes it is described as looking like cottage cheese or an orange peel. While cellulite is most common on the lower part of the body, it also can be found on the breasts, lower abdomen and upper arms. According to the Mayo Clinic, cellulite can come in different forms and range from mild to more severe cases. Mild cellulite may not be visible when lying down or standing, but can be viewed when the skin is pinched. More severe cases will be visible when standing or lying down, and the bumps and valleys may be more pronounced. Cellulite is not merely a symptom of being overweight or obese. Even lean people can get cellulite. Cellulite also can come in different forms. Adipose cellulite is the firm, orange peel-type cellulite. Edematous cellulite is caused by fluid retention and will be softer to the touch. Fibrotic cellulite is hard and compact. Although little is known about what causes cellulite, it is believed to involve fibrous connective cords that attach the skin to the underlying muscle, offers The Mayo Clinic. Fat lies in between these layers. When fat cells accumulate, they can push against the skin while the cords pull down. This creates the dimpling effect. Cellulite is much more common among women because they tend to have higher percentages of body fat. As women age or gain weight, skin becomes less flexible and cellulite becomes more visible. While some miracle creams and cellulite treatments blame cellulite formation on toxins in the body, circulation, loss of skin elasticity and heredity are more likely the culprits. 46 May 2017 | azhealthandliving.com

Circulation is necessary to strengthen the collagen in skin and tighten the connective fibrous bonds. Increasing circulation to the areas where cellulite forms through swimming, running, brisk walking, and even some massage can reduce dimpled skin if women make such activities part of their regular routines. This will help loosen fat from the difficult areas. Women also can hit the gym and firm and tone muscles in the problem areas, thus tightening the skin. Nothing can vanquish the cellulite beneath the skin. Topical creams and lotions are designed to plump and firm the skin. There is limited evidence that creams or scrubs can permanently reduce the appearance of cellulite. Laser and radio frequency techniques can be effective for long periods of time for women who have the time for such practices. But exercise and skinfirming techniques can suffice for women looking to get rid of their cellulite.

Differences in Fat Stores & Metabolism Among Women By MS

Genetic differences between men and women's bodies extend beyond certain physical traits and hormone levels. Women metabolize food and store fat differently than men, and understanding these differences can help women looking to lose weight. The National Center for Biotechnology Information, U.S. National Library of Medicine, states that women generally have a higher percentage of body fat than men. This fat is stored more readily in the gluteal-femoral region, while men store fat in the abdominal area. Women may become frustrated with fat stores as they embark on fitness regimens to shape their bodies. However, the fat that naturally covers muscle has a purpose, and curves can signify femininity. Women are genetically engineered to carry roughly 18 to 20 percent body fat, whereas men hold 10 to 15 percent body fat. These numbers are approximate and will vary depending on the individual. Fat reserves on the female body are necessary for reproduction. That is why girls will begin to develop fat reserves as they enter into puberty. Fat stores are held in the hips, buttocks, thighs, and lower abdomen and will be used to power nursing and help nourish a growing baby. Despite eating fewer calories, women can store fat more efficiently than men, according to ScienceDaily. A University of New South Wales research review has suggested a link between estrogen and fat. Studies show that estrogen reduces a woman's ability to burn energy after eating, which results in more fat being stored around the body. Surprisingly, women can burn more fat during exercise than men, but their fat storage due to exercise does not deplete as quickly as men's. This paradox can frustrate female athletes. Some women may opt to restrict calorie consumption even further, but this actually may increase fat storage. When the body consumes fewer calories than it needs, fat reserves increase. At this time, the body essentially goes into starvation mode, storing whichever calories are ingested as fat reserves so there will be energy available. A key to maintaining healthy fat levels is to determine one's optimal caloric intake for energy expenditure. A nutritionist or fitness expert can help reach that determination. azhealthandliving.com | May 2017

DECORATE & IMPROVE

By MS

Making a Family Move Easier Whether or not to relocate can be a difficult decision. Sometimes such decisions are borne out of necessity when a parent is relocated by his or her company. Other times it is a personal reason to try out a new neighborhood or upgrade to a larger home. Date from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates a stable annual rate of moving hovering at around 12 percent of the population since 2008. Whatever reason is behind a move, it can take some time to adjust to both the idea of moving and the new living space especially for children who may seem disconnected from the decision. The following tips can make the transition a little easier for families.

Talk about it Do not blindside children with a move. Begin having conversations as a family as soon as the possibility of moving arises. Involve the children in some of the decisions. Ask about the features they want to see in their new home. Explain that people, be it prospective buyers, real estate agents or movers, will be visiting your current home and that this may be a little disruptive. Talk about the reasons for the move, such as a new job or that the family has outgrown the space. Kids can process much more than many adults give them credit for.

or if he or she knows of any clubs or leagues that suit your family's interests. Making a few introductions ahead of time will give children and adults some familiar faces on their first days in their new home. Families shouldn't shy away from making their own introductions as well. Knocking on a few neighbors' doors and letting them know a new family is coming to the street can pave the way for familiarity and friendships.

Discuss any concerns

Stay in touch

Children may have concerns about the move that differ from adults'. Many of these may pertain to fears about making new friends or coursework at a new school. Let them voice their opinions. Removing some of the mysteries by visiting schools or local hangouts before the move is made can assuage some fears.

Encourage children to stay in touch with their current friends. Video chat enables kids to see and speak with peers. When things settle after the move, arrange for a surprise play date where children can introduce their old friends to newer ones.

Create some familiarity Set aside boxes or bins that will house kids' toys or things that the family recognizes. These may include photographs, games, throw blankets, or the creature comforts of home. Make these the first items that are unpacked upon moving into the new house.

Use the agent as a resource Many real estate agents live in the towns where they make their living. Find out if the agent can set up a meet-and-greet 48 May 2017 | azhealthandliving.com

Stick to a routine One of the ways to breed familiarity is to stick to the same routine. If a big Sunday family dinner was the norm, continue the tradition in your new home. Wake in the morning and go to bed at the same time. Structure and routine are key for children. Try to focus on one new thing at a time to minimize stress. Moving can be exciting and scary at the same time. Children may be anxious about the process, but families can work together to iron out the kinks and settle into their news homes successfully.

A2M – A NonSurgical “Cure” for Osteoarthritis and Inflammation is Here!

Wouldn’t it be great to wake up in the mornings without stiffness and pain in your arthritic joints? Or to take your dog for a long walk without worrying about “paying for it” the next day? Now, imagine being able to have like new joints – without replacement surgery. This is the promise of a protein molecule called Alpha-2-Macroglobulin, more commonly referred to as A2M. A2M is a recently discovered compound that arrests the degradation of the cartilage caused by osteoarthritis (OA) and protects the joint.

Karla Souza

A dedicated, multitalented star When someone in the entertainment industry is called a “triple threat,” it’s usually because they can act, dance and sing. In the case of Karla Souza, a popular Mexican-American actress, the phrase can describe her linguistic talents, because the star is fluent in Spanish, English and French—and has studied acting or performed in all three languages. Best known in the U.S. for her regular role on the hit TV series “How to Get Away with Murder,” Souza has built a successful career for herself across cultural borders. “Over the past five years, Karla Souza has appeared in some of Mexico’s top-grossing films, including ‘We Are the Nobles’ and ‘Instructions Not Included,’” cites a recent article in Variety. “Since 2014, she’s been a regular on the ABC TV drama ‘How to Get Away With Murder.’ She has dabbled in producing as well, with the 2016 comedy ‘¿Qué Culpa Tiene el Niño?’ and ‘Everybody Loves Somebody.’” In the same interview, Souza talked about her success in her native Mexico and the U.S. “My entire career I’ve depended so much on my team and a group of people that have led me to great scripts, knowing [what will help] me grow as an actor,” Souza told Variety. “I’m very grateful for having had success in both countries, because they’re very different cultures. It takes a village to choose the right projects.” 50 May 2017 | azhealthandliving.com

In February, Souza’s bilingual romantic comedy, titled “Everybody Loves Somebody,” was released to positive reviews from both audiences and critics. Many media outlets applauded the fact that she both produced the title and that the film was in two languages—something not often seen in movies. “People follow my movies for a reason, and that’s because I believe in them, and I don’t want to just make movies for the sake of making movies,” Souza told SheKnows.com. “I felt really strongly about this script because, like you said, it’s a very specific way of life. It’s a very specific tone, and romantic comedies, if done badly, can be catastrophic. I knew that [director/screenwriter] Catalina Aguilar Mastretta had an amazing take on the female psyche and the modern woman and the modern immigrant woman living in the U.S., and I really saw the need for a story told of our daily lives without being a statistic and without just trying to hit a demographic, and I felt that with this one.” With citizenship in both Mexico and America—and having studied acting abroad in France and London— Souza represents a variety of cultural influences. Last year, she penned a personal opinion column about how she embraces her diverse background and is proud to represent it on screen. “My front porch proudly displays both the Mexican and American flags. I celebrate both El Grito (Mexican Independence Day) on Sept. 15, and Fourth of July. At birthday celebrations, you'll hear both "Las Mañanitas" and Happy Birthday. I consider myself as much American as I do Mexican,” she wrote in her column for PopSugar. “As a kid, I would check the box that said Caucasian in forms because I thought they were asking about the color of my skin. I was later told that I was considered ‘brown’ even if my skin is white. Forgive me if I'm still confused. These boxes fail miserably at labeling us.” For those who wish to follow her on social media, “like” Karla Souza on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ KarlaSouzaOfficial; follow her on Twitter @KarlaSouza7; or find her on Instagram at www.instagram.com/ KarlaSouzaOfficial. azhealthandliving.com |May 2017

Computer Vision Syndrome: Causes, Symptoms & Prevention Technology has simplified life in so many ways. Thanks to their tablets and smartphones, many people now have a wealth of information at their disposal 24 hours a day, seven days week. Computers, tablets and smartphones can now be seen just about everywhere, so it's no wonder that studies have shown that as much as 90 percent of computer users have reported symptoms of computer vision syndrome, or CVS. Sometimes referred to as "digital eyestrain," CVS is, according to the American Optometric Association, an umbrella term used to describe a group of eye and visionrelated problems that result from prolonged computer use. Manhattan Vision Associates notes that such problems can arise in people who spend two or more hours daily in front of a screen, a qualifier that means just about anyone, from working professionals to children, is susceptible to CVS.

What are the symptoms of CVS? No two individuals are the same, and some people who spend significant amounts of time may never develop CVS. But those who do may experience the following symptoms.

Eyestrain: When people spend ample time staring at screens, the muscles of their inner eyes can strain, tighten and cause eye irritation. This can result in fatigue and pain.

Blurred vision: Blurred vision can compromise a person's ability to see small details. That loss of sharpness can make it hard to focus on a screen for a significant amount of time. In addition, vision can blur as people go back and forth between their keyboards and screens or multiple screens, as many people do while simultaneously working on a computer and using their smartphones.

Headaches: Many people develop headaches after staring at screens for prolonged periods. That's because the brightness and contrast of a screen can produce an indirect glare that's especially hard on the eyes.

Dry eyes: People do not blink as often when staring at screens as they do when they are not looking at screens. As a result, people are vulnerable to dry eyes when staring at screens, as blinking is one of the ways the eyes replenish moisture.

Can CVS be prevented? 58 May 2017 | azhealthandliving.com

While some people may be inclined to accept CVS as a side effect of living in the 21st century, there are ways to prevent CVS.

Take frequent breaks. The AOA recommend that people alleviate digital eyestrain by following the 20-20-20 rule. This rule advises taking 20 second breaks to stare at something 20 feet away every 20 minutes.

Reposition your computer screen. The AOA notes that the optimal location for computer screens is between 15 and 20 degrees below eye level, or about four to 5 inches, as measured from the center of the screen. In addition, position the screen so it is between 20 and 28 inches from your eyes. Avoid glare. Computer screens also should be positioned to avoid glare from lighting and windows. Draw blinds or drapes if sun is shining in on the screen, and opt for low wattage light bulbs in desk lamps.

Blink more. Make a concerted effort to blink more throughout the day so your eyes remain as moist as possible. The average time people spend staring at screens continues to rise, making CVS a legitimate concern for adults and children alike. Learn more about CVS and how to prevent it at www.aoa.org.

How Aging Women Can Fight Fibromyalgia Pain As the body ages, aches, and pains might become more difficult for men and women to handle. While not all pain is indicative of a disorder or condition, aging women who experience pain may be suffering from fibromyalgia. The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases notes that fibromyalgia is a common and chronic disorder characterized by widespread pain. While anyone can get fibromyalgia, the NIAMS that between 80 and 90 percent of those diagnosed are women and that sufferers are most often diagnosed in middle age. Doctors may prescribe medication to help women fight pain resulting from fibromyalgia, and there are some additional ways to combat that pain as well.

Get enough sleep. The NIAMS says the getting enough sleep can help ease the pain and fatigue associated with fibromyalgia. To ensure a better night's sleep, women can adopt sleep schedules so they go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, including on weekends and during vacations. Avoid alcohol and caffeine in the late afternoon and evening, as both substances can make it more difficult to sleep soundly. In addition, avoid reading or working while in bed, as such activities can stimulate the body, making it harder to fall asleep as a result. Exercise regularly. Exercising while in pain may seem counterintuitive, but the NIAMS notes that numerous studies have indicated that regular exercise is an effective treatment for fibromyalgia. When beginning a new exercise regimen, take things slowly at first, gradually building up your endurance levels and amping up the intensity of your workouts as your body acclimates itself to exercise. Change your diet. Some women suffering from fibromyalgia have reported feeling better when they began to avoid certain foods, though the NIAMS points out that there is no specific diet connected to reducing fibromyalgia-related pain. The AARP notes that foods such as red grapes and cherries and herbs and spices, such 60 May 2017

as ginger and turmeric, can help aging women combat pain.

Examine your workspace. Working women who are dealing with fibromyalgia may benefit by examining their workspaces and adapting those spaces to make them more comfortable. Replace desk chairs if they do not provide adequate support and speak with an occupation therapist regarding other ways to make workstations more comfortable.

Coping as a Family Caregiver Individuals are born into the world requiring the care of their parents and other adult guardians to grow and thrive. These adult children, in turn, may end up providing care when their parents reach senior age or face an illness or disability. Becoming a family caregiver frequently is a tough choice to make. It requires patience and time, and can be emotionally and physically taxing. An estimated 43.5 million adults in the United States have provided unpaid care to an adult or a child in the prior 12 months, according to the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP Public Policy Institute. It's not uncommon for caregivers of any age to feel stressed and burned out by the demands of caregiving. The Mayo Clinic says people who experience caregiver stress can be vulnerable to changes in their own health. Some signs of caregiver stress include:

Eat healthy

· Gaining or losing a lot of weight

As anyone who has dealt with a hungry toddler can attest, failure to eat well and frequently can result in an emotional meltdown. Be sure to always make time for nutritious meals. This will help keep up energy stores and enable you to better cope with caregiver stress.

· Becoming easily irritated or angry

Pay attention to mood changes

· Losing interest in activities you used to enjoy

Anxiety or depression can sneak up on you when you least expect it. Ask for help if you feel your tasks are becoming too overwhelming. Seek the help of a doctor if changes in mood, sleeping patterns, appetite and the like become noticeable.

· Feeling overwhelmed or constantly worried · Feeling tired most of the time

· Having frequent headaches, bodily pain or other physical problems Some caregivers even resort to drugs and alcohol to selfmedicate, which can lead to further issues. To avoid the potential pitfalls of caregiver stress, individuals should always put their needs first and find ways to alleviate the added stress of caring for a loved one. These suggestions are just a start.

Don't strive for perfection It isn't possible to maintain a patient attitude and get everything done perfectly each and every day. People are not perfect and mistakes will be made. Do not punish yourself if you lash out or simply need a break. 62 May 2017

| azhealthandliving.com

Take frequent breaks Getting a break from caregiving and setting aside time for yourself can increase patience levels and the ability to bounce back from stress. Whenever possible, have a friend or another relative step in for you so you get a break. Explore resources available for professional aides to come and take some of the responsibilities off your shoulders. Being a caregiver can be a rewarding, but challenging role to play. Caregivers should keep their health a priority.

Stay Safe When Gardening in Hot Weather By MS

Gardening is widely considered as relaxing a hobby as it is rewarding. Although gardening when temperatures are mild, such as in spring and fall, can be relaxing, gardening can be much more physically taxing and even dangerous when temperatures rise during the dog days of summer. Gardens need tending even when temperatures outside are especially hot, so gardeners must take steps to protect their health when working in their gardens during the summer.

Stay hydrated. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water is something gardeners must do to stay safe when gardening in summer. Water carries heat away from internal organs, helping to prevent heat stroke along the way. Water takes heat through the bloodstream to the skin, resulting in sweat. Gardeners who notice they are not sweating despite the heat should drink more water and even head indoors to cool down. In addition, the American Heart Association notes that keeping the body hydrated helps the heart pump blood more easily, making gardening less taxing on the heart on hot days. Take frequent breaks indoors or in shady areas. Head

inside to air-conditioned rooms, if necessary, or find shady areas to sit, relax and drink some water. Sitting in the shade will give the body's thermostat a chance to recover from exposure to extreme heat.

Take note of your physical condition. Many people

garden alone, so it's important that gardeners learn the symptoms of heat-related illnesses. The CDC notes that elevated body temperatures, headache, rapid pulse, dizziness, nausea, and/or confusion are some common symptoms of heat-related illnesses. Gardeners should go indoors the moment any such symptoms appear.

Change Your Thoughts. Change Your Words. Change Your World.

Garden during the cooler parts of the day. Lawncare

professionals advise against watering lawns between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the summertime, as water is more likely to evaporate during this time, which tends to be the hottest time of the day. Gardeners should avoid working in their gardens during these hours as well.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called friends, red lights called enemies, caution lights called family. You will have flats called jobs. But, if you have a spare called determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith and a driver named Jesus—you will make it to a place called success.” – Author Unknown
