Welcome Summer Freeze Fat Away for the Holiday!
Liquid Lift Special! (2) syringes Juvederm XC (1) area Botox Cosmetic $950 (Includes Brilliant Distinctions Instant Rebate while supplies last)
For many aging men and women, localized fat layers can be very difficult to “work” off. Even with a regular exercise regimen and strict dietary factors, areas such as love handle, abdominal fat, and back fat can be stubborn to contour. Surgical liposuction may not be an option for many people due to cost, down time or anesthesia. Now there is another option, is a breakthrough, non-invasive procedure that uses cooling technology that noticeably eliminates fat without surgery. That’s right, similar to liposuction; the fat cells are eliminated resulting in fewer fat cells all t ogether. Using science developed by Harvard scientist and technology by Zeltiq, induces selective fat layer reduction without any damage to overlying skin. Once the fat cells are affected by the cooling, they are eliminated from the body over the course of the next 90 days. There is no subsequent change in blood lipid levels following the procedure is completely non-invasive; there is no cutting, no needles, and no anesthesia necessary. The procedure begins with the device being attached to the area of concern with a suction sensation, and then a cold sensation is felt for the first few minutes. The area will feel either numb or cold for the remainder of the hour. During the procedure patients typically read, watch a movie, use electronic devices, listen to music, or relax. More than one area may be treated in the same appointment time. Upon consultation, your provider will determine if you are a good candidate and number of sessions that will be required for desired results and contour.

is FDA cleared for the flank area and proven to be safe and effective with minimal side effects reported to resolve completely. There may possibly be some temporary pain or discomfort and your provider will discuss more on what to expect during and following the procedure. Areas that may be treated include love handles, back fat, lower abdomen, and inner thigh. Each patient is individually assessed to determine number of treatments and expectations. Most patients require one to two treatments and see noticeable reduction of fat in the treated area after one visit. Some individuals may appreciate more fat reduction with additional treatments. The cost of the procedure ranges from $1500 to $3000 depending on number of treatments and number of areas being treated. Studies show elimination of visible fat maintained past two years.

TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
In the Final Analysis, it is Between You & God! We can’t change what happened yesterday and only God knows what tomorrow holds. So, why worry about what is not in our hands to control? I believe when you replace worry with harmony, all can only progress and evolve positively forward. Welcome each day as it arrives by taking a step down, to who is truly in charge – God! And allow your faith to carry you. For a jump start and daily inspiration, here is a verse that was reportedly written on the wall of Mother Teresa’s home for abandoned children in Calcutta, India, and is widely attributed to her. Some sources say that the words below were written on the wall in Mother Teresa’s own room. In any case, their association with Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity has made them popular worldwide, expressing as they do, the spirit in which they lived their lives. It seems to be based on a composition originally by Kent Keith, but much of the second half has been rewritten in a more spiritual way.
People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered; Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies; Succeed anyway. If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; Be honest and frank anyway. What you spend years building, others could destroy overnight; Build anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous; Be happy anyway. The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; Do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; Give the world the best you have anyway. You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway. ~ Mother Teresa Until next time...
God Bless You! Here to serve,

Mercy Jets Helps Transport Sick and Injured
I
magine being on vacation seriously injured and then confined to a hospital bed hundreds of miles from home. What would you do? How would you get home safely? One Valley man, troubled by that thought, set out to do something about it. John Bohn, a pilot and former emergency medical technician (EMT), believed there had to be a better way to transport patients and their loved ones home safely. Bohn also wanted to focus on the care of the patient from hospital room to hospital room. “When a loved one is injured, it’s not only a stressful time for family and friends, but too often a confusing one as well,” says Bohn. “Everyone wants the best possible care for their loved one, but when you’re trying to focus on their care and medical treatment, the last thing you want to worry about is getting them home safely.” Bohn set out to form Mercy Jets, an air ambulance company based in Phoenix that helps transport injured and seriously ill patients. Mercy Jets has coordinated medical transports on every continent, except Antarctica. “I wanted to make a difference in people's lives,” says Bohn. “I’ve always been the one who ran first to the scene of an accident just to see if I could be of some help. Combining my medical history and my professional experience as a pilot seemed like a natural way to help others.” Today, Mercy Jets is concerned with making sure patients, who are in need of help, find the compassion and quality medical care they deserve. Mercy Jets calls such medical attention “complete continuity of care.”
“It’s really about providing the safest air ambulance transportation in the industry and doing it while providing top-notch care every step of the way,” replies Bohn. “It’s incredibly important to us that a patient’s medical care is as seamless as possible. We put a patient’s health and safety ahead of all other business goals.” Recently, the company transported accident victim Skylar Fox and his family on a roundtrip medical flight to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., so the younger Fox could receive medical treatment. Fox, a high school senior, had suffered serious injuries when his dirt bike went off the road and struck a shed. In the days and weeks after the accident, family and friends rallied around the Fox family, holding fundraising efforts to help support the growing pile of medical bills. More than

eight months after the accident, the family found themselves facing a medical flight that was financially out of reach. The plight of Skylar Fox came to Bohn’s attention when contacted to provide air ambulance service for the Fox family. Mercy Jets did not hesitate to spring into action. “One of the main reasons I founded Mercy Jets was to come to the assistance of people like Skylar,” says Bohn. “We realized early on the financial hardship that they were experiencing, given the enormous financial obligations the accident had already caused the family. We had to act fast because Skylar needed the medical attention. At the end of the day, providing the flight at no direct cost to the family was simply the right thing to do.”

The Moray Eel, Vicious or Shy? By Grey Stafford
Despite their reputation as vicious predators, moray eels, like the zebra moray eel, are rather shy animals. They make their home among crevices in reefs and rocks. They usually do not harm human divers unless provoked. Moray eels have small mouths and are the only known species of animal to have a second set of jaws, known as pharyngeal jaws, which help grasp and pass prey into their stomach. Most moray eels live in marine or brackish water throughout the world’s oceans along the tropics and subtropics.

B
ent But Not Broken (BBNB) is the first nonprofit organization in the nation created to help both patients and their caregivers living with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) or chronic fatigue immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS). Established in 2012, BBNB’s mission is to provide educational, emotional and financial resources to those patients and caregivers. With more than one million Americans living with this debilitating illness, BBNB strives to support and educate sufferers of CFS/CFIDS, as well as those unfamiliar with the disease. 16
June 2013 | azhealthandliving.com
Although it is easy to assume that CFS/ CFIDS patients simply experience bouts of tiredness, there is much more to the illness than meets the eye. Unrelieved by rest, CFS/CFIDS inhibits day-to-day occupational, social, educational and personal activities. Patients typically experience longlasting attacks on multiple systems of the body, ranging from flu-like and neurological symptoms to cognitive problems, insomnia and muscle weakness. Because CFS/CFIDS is viewed as an “invisible” illness, and due to the lack of recognition and research in the United
States, it is essential that BBNB spread awareness of CFS/CFIDS through the first-hand experiences of its founder, Lindsey Beres. As a sufferer from CFS, Beres understands the struggles of this life-altering illness. After years of volunteering for various Phoenix charities, she decided it was time to reach out to the world about this “invisible” illness and start a charity. Beres describes CFS/CFIDS as “a relentless condition that rears its head in the most extreme form when you are least expecting it. It’s what keeps you from having the life you strive for every day. It’s what took away the things you thought you wanted for so long. It is
what keeps you from physically being able to achieve your dreams.”
6929 N. Hayden Rd., Ste. C4-433 Scottsdale www.bentbutnotbroken.org
© 2011 United Way Worldwide.
While there are nonprofits dedicated to raising funds for research of CFS/ CFIDS, Beres wanted to set BBNB apart by focusing its efforts on the patients and caregivers themselves. Since it began accepting financial applications in January 2013, BBNB has been able to cover the cost of treatments, tests, procedures and medications for patients nationwide. Through several fundraising events
and generous community support, BBNB has proudly provided financial assistance to patients in not only Arizona, but also Virginia, Florida, Michigan, and Colorado. Additionally, the BBNB blog provides patients with resources and support to know that there are others who are experiencing the same emotions and struggles. BBNB’s website serves as an easyT:7” for patients who access, one-stop site are exploring ways S:7” to cope with CFS/ CFIDS.
Looking to the future, Beres states, “I just want people to understand that they aren’t alone. This cruel, chronic illness may have taken so many things from them, but it cannot take away their will to live and ability to smile. Even if they don’t have an amazing support structure in their own lives, they can turn to the BBNB community and rely on us to get them through the rough days.” BBNB will remain patient and caregiver focused as it continues to raise local and national awareness of CFS/CFIDS.

Phoenix Artist Rescues Abandoned Teddy Bears Tara Logsdon, local artist also known as “Dr. Tara Logsdon, Chief Medic,” rescues abandoned teddy bears and gives them an extreme makeover. Logsdon rescues the teddy bears from thrift stores throughout the Valley. Through her company, EKLBearmy, Logsdon rescues these traditional teddy bears in what she calls a “bearbulance,” which is her vehicle with red crosses in the window, and a medical bag. Logsdon washes the old teddy bears and revamps them, giving them new eyes for a “better outlook on life” as well a new heart. Each teddy bear is a one-of-a-kind creation. Her redesign is usually with an emphasis on Native culture and the metaphysical. Once the teddy bear has been transformed, she sends it to a new adopted family along with a written prescription with instructions on adapting to its new environment. Bearmy believes that people must slow down, becoming more deliberate with creation and consumption to decrease abandonment in the world as well as the spreading of smiles. NEVER LOSE FAITH
By Alison Bailin Batz
Local Physician Winning the Battle on Colon Health
D
r. Frank W. Jackson is dedicated to “gut feelings”. Having lost his father and brother to cancer, Dr. Jackson wanted to do everything he could to help win the health war. More specifically, he has been studying the actual language our brains share with our guts, or colons. According to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearing House (NDDIC), 70 million people nationwide are affected by digestive disease, with more than 13.5 million needing hospitalization, on average, annually. “As Americans’ fiber intake has decreased in recent decades, our incidence of stomach and GI-related issues such as diverticulosis, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and cancer-causing colon polyps has skyrocketed,” says Dr. Jackson. “Coincidence, I think not.” Dr. Jackson organized the Society of Gastroenterology, aiming to serve the educational needs of gastroenterologists and improve the level of care for gastrointestinal disorders. He also assisted the Department of Health to design some of the first-ever, 20

single specialty surgery centers, which have moved further student, as well as treatment technologies, forward by leaps and bounds. Negative communication between the brain and colon occurs when bad bacteria (Firmicutes) outnumber the good (Bacteroidetes). This can result in one or more GI-related diseases, including heart disease. “This helped all of us as medical professionals come to understand the makeup of the colon bacteria to a remarkable degree. There are trillions of bacteria swimming around the colon – 10 times more of them than there are cells in our entire bodies! I wanted to give ‘the good guys’ some ammunition, in the form of a special type of soluble fiber, called prebiotics,” says Dr. Jackson. Prebiotics, not to be confused with Probiotics, are used mostly by the good bacteria in the body as a fuel source. With the help of prebiotics, the colon provides
a warm, oxygen-free environment for good bacteria to grow – potentially outnumbering the bad and winning the battle for one’s colon health. Inspired, Dr. Jackson devotes himself nearly full time to educating the public on prebiotics, first via an educational outreach website where he posts nearly weekly nutritional and general health advice and other critical information on diseases connected to the colon. He also reports on the ever-increasing number of medical studies involving prebiotics as they happen. “The good news, we’re learning, is that the two moststudied prebiotics can be found in more than 36,000 plants,” says Dr. Jackson. “But, as our food industries and agriculture have developed, the foods in which we get prebiotics have become limited.”

Youth Sports Founder Runs With Olympic Torch
D
ale Kamarata was one of three people from the United States to get the honor of running with the Olympic torch before the Summer Olympics in London. Coworkers nominated Kamarata, a supply chain manager for Coca-Cola, in the company’s contest to select 22 torchbearers from across the world. The goal - to honor individuals based on their extraordinary community work, leadership and a commitment to improving lives. Kamarata definitely fit the bill. In 2006, Kamarata founded the nonprofit, Estrella Youth Sports. His dream was to create an affordable youth sports program in the already tightknit Estrella neighborhood, to bring families together and ensure kids have a safe place to play. On the first day of practice, Kamarata expected about 20 participants to show up, but more than 150 came out. That is when he knew he had created something special. Desperately in need of a new field, Kamarata applied for a grant from the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2007, which was accepted. The D-Votion Field opened in the fall of 2008, and features a signature Diamondback’s scoreboard and several authentic stadium seats from Chase Field.

Kamarata has always loved sports, but to him it was more about building relationships than winning. Over the past six years, Estrella Youth Sports has upheld the mission to serve the children of the community by developing good role models through the vehicle of youth sports. “The whole intent is to try and create positive experiences and promote active living through youth sports,” says Kamarata. “It’s about continuing to build this amazing community and being a part of the sense of support and belonging Estrella is known for.” Over the years, Estrella Youth Sports has expanded to offer T-ball, baseball, basketball, flag football and soccer for children ages three through the 8th grade. Today, more than 1,000 families participate in the sports programs and Kamarata’s passion for giving back to his community is as strong as ever. The nonprofit provides discount programs to ensure that every child who wants to play be given the chance and that none are turned away for financial reasons. If someone tells Kamarata there are financial issues, they are provided a scholarship. There is no paperwork involved. All of this led to Kamarata’s
once in a lifetime experience with the Olympic torch. On July 10, 2012, Kamarata ran his 300 meters through the town of Wallingford, Oxforshire. “It was an amazing experience, especially having my wife and kids there to cheer me on,” exclaims Kamarata. “The minute they light the torch so many things start running through your mind – I was thinking about the kids, about how I’m representing my community, my family, my country and Coca-Cola. It’s overwhelming. Yet somehow, your feet start moving.” Ever modest, Kamarata will say that the honor belongs to the community who supports his program. “I feel like I carried the torch for all the people who have been so important in my life.” Photos courtesy of Dale Kamarata

Prevent
Symptoms of an
Enlarged Prostate
M
any men suffer from an enlarged prostate gland. Because an enlarged prostate most often affects men over the age of 50, many younger men may be unaware of the symptoms. Identifying warning signs early can lead to an earlier diagnosis and a more effective course of treatment.
What is an enlarged prostate? An enlarged prostate, known as prostatitis or sometimes benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is the inflammation of the prostate. What causes the prostate to expand is largely unknown, but the condition has been linked to a bacterial infection or decreased immune function. Others find it is the result of weakening muscles. Genetics and the aging process also play a role in prostate enlargement.
Symptoms Symptoms of an enlarged prostate vary in their severity, and a small amount of inflammation can cause major symptoms and vice versa. Less than half of all men with an enlarged prostate actually have symptoms of the disease. Those who do may experience any number of the following: X Weak/slow urine stream X Feeling of incomplete bladder emptying X Increased urinary frequency/urgency X Testicular pain X Pain with ejaculation X Straining to urinate X Continued dribbling of urine X Stopping and starting while urinating For many men, the increased frequency to visit the bathroom is one of the first indicators that there may be an issue with the prostate gland. An enlarged prostate, which leads to an inability to fully empty the bladder, can trigger urinary tract infections. This may compound symptoms and cause additional pain or burning when passing urine, as well as increased urinary urgency. An infection also may lead to blood in the urine. 24
June 2013 | azhealthandliving.com
Diagnosing an enlarged prostate The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located between the bladder and the penis. The prostate secretes fluid that nourishes and protects sperm. It is responsible for pushing this fluid into the urethra prior to ejaculation. The prostate gland’s proximity to the bladder and the penis is largely what causes the problems with urination. Because of the prostate’s location, the single best way to detect enlargement of the gland is through a digital rectal examination. A doctor will insert their finger into the rectum and feel for the prostate to see if it is enlarged or tender. Should there be any indication of an abnormality, a prostate-specific antigen blood test or an ultrasound may be suggested.
Treatment A doctor may prescribe alpha-blockers, which relax the muscles around the urethra to help urine flow more freely. If enlargement is due to infection, antibiotics could be given. Other medications reduce the level of a certain form of testosterone called DHT. With less DHT present, the prostate shrinks. If medications do not alleviate symptoms, surgery may be necessary. In some cases, an enlarged prostate may be an indicator of prostate cancer. A doctor may want to run tests to see if cancer is present. Prostate cancer is often very slow-growing and some people prefer a wait-and-see method of treatment if symptoms are not troublesome.
The FDA Warning About GERD Treatment By MS
Thousands rely on the use of proton pump inhibitor (PPI)medications to tame symptoms of acid and gastroesophagealreflux disease (GERD). The Federal Drug Administration on prolonged regimens of PPIs levelsof circulating magnesium in increase a person’s risk for serious
warns that individuals may experience low the blood, which can health conditions.
The FDA advises that PPI treatment given to patients whoreceive a stent or experience a cardiovascular event may increase risk of heart attack or stroke.
Widespread usage PPIs are among the most commonly prescribed drugs in
the United States, representing more than 100 million prescriptions annually, according to IMS Health, a healthcare market research firm. Many PPI drugs are now available everywhere without a prescription. According to research published in the Archives of Surgery, men were more likely than women to have weak valves where the esophagus meets the stomach. This can contribute to GERD symptoms. Men also were more likely to have esophagitis or Barrett’s esophagus, both of which are changes to the esophagus caused by chronic acid exposure.
Symptoms and causes GERD is a burning sensation in the chest that sometimes spreads to the throat with a sour taste in the mouth. It may cause regurgitation of food or stomach acid. Chest pain, a lump in the throat, or trouble swallowing also may be symptomatic of GERD. In healthy people, the esophageal sphincter -- a circular band of muscle around the bottom of the esophagus -will relax to allow food and liquid to reach the stomach and then retighten. If this valve becomes weak, stomach acid can backup into the esophagus.
Other alternatives Those looking to reduce or cease PPI medications can turn to lifestyle changes. Avoiding certain foods, eating smaller meals, exercising, losing weight, drinking less alcohol and quitting smoking are key ways to help minimize GERD.

How Men can Combat Declining Fertility Trends
W
A diet rich in antioxidants such as Vitamins C, E and Zinc can go a long way in improving sperm health. Exercising regularly plus limiting caffeine, alcohol and tobacco intake can also help a great deal.
It is a fact that one in six couples will have difficulty conceiving. Many aren’t aware that almost half the time, it’s the male who is the cause of the problem. When couples address this issue, it’s usually the woman who is the first to see a specialist to determine her fertility status. It’s a little more difficult to get the man on board with doing the same thing. Some men just don’t want to acknowledge that they may have a fertility problem. As such, they are more reluctant to get tested and a lot of men delay seeing a specialist or even avoid it completely.
Fortunately, there is now a way to test for low sperm count in the privacy of one’s own home. A new product from Fairhaven Health, the SpermCheck Fertility Test, accurately confirms if a man has a normal count (20 million per milliliter). The test can be completed in a matter of minutes. Should the SpermCheck at-home test confirm a low count, it’s generally a good indicator that he should see a specialist to help further diagnose the problem.
hen infertility strikes, it can be a massive source of stress for couples, and many are too quick to assume it’s a female issue.
Alarmingly, the average sperm count for adult males has decreased by 50 percent since 1938 and is currently declining at a rate of 2 percent each year, according to a study in the British Medical Journal. Stress, exposure to environmental toxins and diets deficient in key vitamins and minerals are likely to blame.
Low sperm count is one of the primary reasons that couples have a difficult time conceiving. Quite simply, the fewer sperm a man produces, the lower the likelihood that one will successfully fertilize the egg. There are a variety of ways men can help improve their reproductive health. 26
June 2013 | azhealthandliving.com
While low sperm count is known to be a major cause of infertility, for many men, visiting a doctor or clinic to have a sperm analysis done can be a daunting task. The testing process itself can be a little embarrassing and even more so when faced with the prospect of exposing their condition to the doctor, nurse or office staff.
There are many benefits from determining early on if sperm count is a problem. The sooner an issue is pinpointed, the sooner proper treatment can be started. Treatments for male infertility typically include lifestyle changes, vitamin, mineral or herbal supplementation, prescription medication, or even surgical procedures. However, before any of that can begin, the couple has to be able to communicate and agree to take action.
Effective Communication
By Nassim Sana, Masters in counseling and certified life coach
There is an art form to healthy and effective communication. It is similar to painting a picture, consisting of many colors, shades and forms. It can be raw, crude, or filled with wisdom and thought. As a human being, the way in which you communicate is universal. The techniques used are the same for every person. Communication skills are so natural that we do not even realize how it affects our environment. It is important to remember that the words you choose to use have immense power behind them. You may not realize it, but through verbal and non-verbal communication, you can nurture or destroy situations or relationships. When having a conversation with someone, it is important to be fully present. Do not formulate conclusions in your head. Be objective, be present and listen without bringing your own agenda into the conversation. Here are a few suggestions to communicate more effectively:
Create a space of integrity. This will help you have a clear commitment to the issue at hand. It is not only important to have integrity with your words, but using mindfulness and wisdom will take you a long way. Relate to the other person. It is important that you do not make them feel wrong in the way they think or feel. The minute you give the attitude that “my way is right and your way is wrong, you have destroyed the dialogue.
Be committed to the goal of the conversation.
Always step back, assess and be willing to ask open-ended questions that are related to the topic.
Put yourself in the other person’s shoes. Listen
to their side and why they are thinking and feeling a certain way. Never assume. Give the other person room to express their thoughts and feelings, without judgment. Remember, your goal is to have a dialogue not a monologue. azhealthandliving.com | June 2013

CONNECT WITHIN
SPIRIT By Susan Apollon, intuitive psychologist and author of Touched by the Extraordinary, Book Two: Healing Stories of Love, Loss & Hope
Expecting the Extraordinary
Invite miracles to bless you
M
iracles do not happen by coincidence. We are designed for them. Albert Einstein once said of miracles, “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”
Everyone can receive these natural gifts because we are all spiritually connected to God, Source, Allah, or whatever a person chooses to call this wellspring of goodness. Studies in Quantum Physics suggest that anyone with the right mindset can live a life rich in miracles, from the small to the momentous. You simply have to foster your ability to invite them in. Below are a few suggestions and insights that will prepare you to receive your own miracles.
Give yourself permission to be open to extraordinary experiences. The ability to
experience miracles is often dependent on whether or not you choose to allow for the possibility of miracles in your life. Accept that you will allow the universe to do its good and it will respond accordingly.
Rediscover your spirituality. Take time to connect with your own soul and with the source by returning to— or visiting for the first time—prayer, ritual and faith. Learn to meditate while breathing deeply or do yoga. Most of all, try to reach a point at which you feel your connection to the universe and everything in it. Commit to making significant changes in negative thoughts, feelings and beliefs. This
is especially important for a person suffering an illness because anxiety and desperation have a strong tendency to block your ability to heal. To change this stone-set pattern you must always be aware of what you are feeling. Then, consciously change your thoughts, replacing negative or disturbing images with positive and empowering ones.
Keep a synchronicity journal. Synchronicity is
the flow of “meaningful coincidences.” It indicate that all life is connected in a complex web of psychic moments, signs and symbols and shivers of spiritual connectedness. 28
June 2013 | azhealthandliving.com
The sheer volume of these subtle miracles that happen in so many different lives adds up to powerful evidence of “something greater.” The numbers will be far greater than you may have imagined.
Write down your intentions. Daily and in detail, record on paper with joyful enthusiasm exactly what you desire from the universe. Expect good things to be placed in your path and they will come. Above all, keeping your heart brimming full of love and compassion is the most important factor needed in the creation of miracles. This simple intention is the healing balm needed to rescue Earth and all souls upon it. What better way to be than with a new faith-based attitude that risks little sorrow and at most promises unprecedented hope and joy? Even diehard skeptics are hungry for that. Life itself is extraordinary––miraculous! All it takes to realize that is to open your eyes and see the amazing things that surround us all, every day.

Get a Glowing Tan by Drinking Your Vegetables
uicing is hot like the vibrant fashion colors for summer – lemon, raspberry, orange, lime and tomato. Making delicious fruit and veggie juices is great for your energy, immune system and workout. However, did you know the juices could also improve the color of your skin? Many people wonder if they should use a self-tanning cream or slather on copious amounts of sunscreen so they can get a little color in the summer. There is another option you may never have heard about that can give your skin a healthy golden tan the safest way possible. New research suggests that eating vegetables gives your skin a healthy golden tan color. A study led by Dr. Ian Stephen at the University of Nottingham revealed that eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables gives you more of a healthy golden glow than the sun, according to the journal Evolution & Human Behavior. Instead of heading for the sun, which can irreversibly damage your skin, you can get your tan on by munching on or juicing up vegetables such as carrots, broccoli, spinach 30

and tomatoes. These can do double duty, depending on the ingredients you choose. Most people just don’t eat enough brightly-colored vegetables and fruit to make a difference in their skin tone or their overall health. People can juice a wide variety of produce in a short time. It’s easy to drink two servings in one 12-ounce glass. Have two glasses of freshly made veggie and fruit juice a day, and you’ve sipped four servings. That will make a difference in how you look. Studies have revealed that people who eat more portions of fruits and vegetables per day have an attractive golden skin color, thanks to substances called carotenoids. These antioxidants help soak up toxins and damaging compounds produced by the stresses of everyday living, poor food choices and environmental toxins. They are especially prevalent when the body is combating disease. So, rather than going to a tanning salon before suiting up for summer, why not head to the farmer’s market and load up on beautiful veggies and fruit? Not only will your skin improve, but your body will thank you as well.

Q. I hear so much about Lasik but have hesitated because of the thought of a blade. Is All-Laser Lasik truly done without any blades? A. The Lasik procedure has progressed significantly since I started doing the procedure two decades ago. We can now perform Lasik using two types of lasers, one to fashion the flap, without the need for a blade and the other to reshape the cornea to allow proper focusing. The entire procedure for both eyes now takes less than 15 minutes, is relatively comfortable and vision is expected to improve rapidly so that you can return to work, driving and other normal activities the next day. Our Swiss-made Ziemer laser is the key to uniformity and consistency in the flap, resulting in a more rapid return of vision to excellent levels without the crutch of glasses or contacts. Q. I have astigmatism and shortsightedness. Can the All-Laser Lasik procedure help my vision? A. Our technologically advanced laser systems can now handle a wide range of vision problems, including astigmatism, short-sightedness (myopia) and farsightedness (hyperopia). Often, it can also make a difference to people over 40 who are frustrated by the need for glasses for close work. Lasik can help most, though not all, circumstances and the best way to know if you are a candidate for laser vision correction is to call an expert for a consultation.

Q. What's new in headache treatment? A. It is human nature to try to classify things into categories. This is particularly true when it comes to headaches. We all have heard of, or perhaps had the misfortune, experiencing migraines, tension, sinus and other headaches. From a neurological perspective, all these categories of headaches can be grouped into a single classification, called primary headache disorder. Furthermore, there is a circuit within the brain that can be called the headache circuit. Termed the trigeminal system, virtually all headaches, regardless of what we call them, are caused by abnormal electrical activity in this pathway. The growing acceptance of the trigeminal system, as the root of most primary headache disorders, has spawned the rapid growth in new and effective methods of treatment. The science behind modern headache treatment is called neuromodulation. Simply put, we know that headaches are triggered by abnormal electrical activity in the trigeminal system of the brain. Neuromodulation seeks to restore normal function to the trigeminal system and reduce, or even abolish, the root cause of primary headache disorder. There are a number of ways to accomplish this, all involve stimulating the nerves that are part of the trigeminal system with mild electrical current applied to the skin. In our office, we use stimulation of the supraorbital and/or vagus nerves to tame the trigeminal system and provide headache relief. Since the treatment is aimed directly at the cause of most headaches, the pain relief for our patients can be dramatic.

Q. I am a 29-year-old mother of four kids. I breast fed all my children and as a result, my breasts are sagging. Should I get a breast lift? A. Many women share this very common concern, so don’t feel alone. First of all, a breast lift can cost a lot of money and also requires you to go under general anesthesia. It is a pretty invasive procedure and will leave scars on your breasts, which may not be desirable. It will, however, definitely give you a lift, should you need one. Also, understand that breast lift and augmentation can be done at the same time in the hospital. The important thing is to know what the statistics are with your breast type. A perfect candidate for breast augmentation alone would have distance from the neck, down to edge of the nipple of around 21 cm. Though augmentation can be performed without a lift for women who have a distance of 24 cm. Here at Arizona Vein & Laser Institute we help you decide which procedure and treatment method is best for you. Some candidates may not be suitable for one method of treatment.

Q. What is systemic lupus erythematosus? A. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a disease that is a good example of an “autoimmune disease”. It is a chronic inflammatory disease where the immune system attacks the tissues of different organ systems throughout the body and can result in many problems. Overall, the disease occurs to a frequency of about one in 1000. It is most common in women, particularly the fertile years. The cause for SLE is not known. There is a genetic predisposition to it and it may be triggered by environmental exposures. There are many manifestations of systemic lupus, from mild to life threatening. The most common symptoms include rash, sun sensitivity, arthritis, mouth and other mucous membrane sores, pericarditis (inflammation around the heart), pleurisy (inflammation around lungs), blood clots, inflamed blood vessels, seizures, renal disease, blood abnormalities, etc. As can be imagined, because of the many different manifestations, this can be a very difficult disease to diagnose. Because of the difficulty in diagnosing and treating some of these problems, rheumatologists need to take part in the management of this disease. SLE has no cure, but there are medications that help manage it. There has only been one new approved drug for the treatment of systemic lupus for several decades! This is why it is so important to continue to look for new treatments. Arizona Arthritis and Rheumatology Associates is proud to take part in many of these trials, which look for new treatments for this potentially life-threatening disease.

Q. Are there any specific activities you can do to improve memory skills?
Q. Can headaches be an indication of sleep-disordered breathing?
A. The general idea of memory and aging is to keep your mind highly focused and engaged in activities that demand concentration, or mastering new skills. I would like to address simple activities that you can do to spark up your memory neurons.
A. Headaches may be an indication of sleepdisordered breathing due to a lack of oxygen in the blood stream. The connection sleepdisordered breathing is an easy one: the airway obstruction that causes sleepdisordered breathing doesn’t let enough oxygen get to the blood. If you can’t breathe in deeply or frequently enough, you cannot get a sufficient amount of oxygen, nor can you exhale all the carbon dioxide you’re supposed to.
1. In order to keep your brain working in the area of prospective memory: whereby you must remember to perform a planned action or intention at the appropriate time, pick two or three words, write them down, or put them in your iPhone then look them over until they connect in your brain. You can make up a story or think of funny ways to link them together. In 30-60 minutes remember to say these 2-3 words before you complete an upcoming task – “I will remember to say my special words before I open the locker at the gym or before I leave the house.” Check to see if you were successful at both remembering to recall the 2-3 words and if you remembered them correctly. 2. Working memory can mean remembering things within a very short span of time, such as in minutes. To work this area of memory think of a word, spell it forward and then spell it backwards. As this skill improves, pick harder and longer words. Use the microphone portion of your phone, or write the word down, to check for accuracy.

Vascular headaches, also known as cluster headaches, are often found in conjunction with sleep-disordered breathing. Such headaches even accompany snoring. Patients who snore and those with obstructive sleep apnea have a high prevalence of headaches. A study found that 80.6 percent of patients who suffer from cluster headaches also have obstructive sleep apnea. As for your everyday, common headache, a connection to sleep-disordered breathing exists as well. In a study in Sweden, headaches were found to be more common in both men and women who snore and those who have obstructive sleep apnea. Morning headaches were three times more common among male and female heavy snorers and those suffering from obstructive sleep apnea than in the general population. I recommend speaking with a healthcare practitioner as soon as possible to determine the cause of your specific headache to help take care of the problem.

Q. Are you suffering from abdominal pain?
Q. Could eye problems be causing my headaches?
Q. How can laser treatment combat the signs of aging?
A. Gastritis is inflammation that occurs in the lining of the stomach. Inflammation is started by excess gastric acid. Excess gastric acid produced by the gastric gland causes damage to the stomach lining, which results in irritation.
A. Headaches often seem to be centered
A. Multiple factors contribute to skin aging: loss of elasticity results in laxity, accumulation of sun damage results in irregular pigmentation and delayed cell turnover results in a dull complexion. Each of these factors need to be addressed when treating the aging face. Advanced laser treatments are now available, which can stimulate collagen to improve elasticity, remove brown pigment for complexion blending and resurface the skin for smoothing texture.
The common signs and symptoms of gastritis include discomfort, burning upper abdominal pain, bloating, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting. Excess alcohol consumption and smoking are thought to start gastritis and aggravate the signs and symptoms. In general cases of gastritis, symptoms are usually mild. There is little to no lasting effect for the damaged lining of the stomach. Although there are many choices of prescription drugs on the market for gastritis, studies shows that certain forms of gastritis, such as the erosive gastritis, damage to the mucosal lining, is associated with long-term use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Side effect is a concern before deciding on the prescription. Traditional Chinese acupuncture has shown results in acute or chronic gastritis. Clinical reference indicates acute gastritis is caused by invasion of pathogenic factors and improper lifestyle. The pathogenic factors could be related to cold or heat. Improper lifestyle commonly refers to improper diet, which could cause acid regurgitation, pressure in the upper abdomen, nausea and vomiting. A typical acupuncture treatment for gastritis involves insertion of a hairfine needle into the abdominal region and the knee. The purpose of the treatment is to adjust and rebalance the Qi flow for pain relief and promote self-healing of the body. –Dr. Jack Kukurin Chiropractic, Acupuncture & Nutrition Network 623.972.8400

around or behind the eyes. There are many conditions related to the eyes that can be the cause of headaches. If the headaches are related to an ocular condition the problem can be identified with a comprehensive eye examination. While many times the causes of headaches are not eye related the following are a few types of headaches that affect the eye. Eye strain. Eye strain results from the eyes overworking the focusing muscle. Headaches from eyestrain usually cause a brow ache to aching behind the eye. Other associated symptoms are fluctuating vision and an inability to focus at close range. Migraine. Migraine headaches are vascular in nature but can be centered around the eyes. They are often preceded by an aura of shimmering lights in the peripheral vision. A particular type of migraine called an ophthalmic migraine will cause the aura of light with noassociated headaches. With a classic migraine there is often extreme sensitivity to light. Other causes of headache can be related pathologic conditions of the eyes like glaucoma. In glaucoma the pressure in the eye rises to a level that can cause a headache and damage to the optic nerve. Headaches are frequent in a particular type of glaucoma called narrowed angle glaucoma. If you think your eyes may be the cause of your headaches an evaluation by your eye doctor may help you in managing your headaches or rule out the eyes as a cause. –Dr. Baird The Village Eyecare 623.931.2943

"The ultimate reason to advertise and your choice of where to advertise is return on investment. A cheap ad campaign that produces few results ends up being an expensive ad campaign. Q. What is Platelet Rich Plasma therapy and how does it work? A. Finally, you are at the age where you can retire and enjoy golfing, bocci and long hikes. So what limits you? For many, its knee pain, sciatica or good old-fashioned arthritis. Your once annoying little pain in your knee has now grown to keep you from shopping and getting out of the house, climbing stairs. We often chalk this up to just “getting old.” Yet you earned this time to enjoy your retirement. Do not let pain interfere with this! Pain needs to be diagnosed and treated by a specialist who understands what may be going on with you. As a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician specializing in pain management, I can look at the entire body’s “kinetic chain,” determine where the source of pain is and give you options for treatment. It is important to seek treatment not only to improve quality of life, but to decrease other problems that are linked to uncontrolled pain, such as sleep disturbance, high blood pressure, atrophy (muscles shrinking), bone loss from lack of activity, obesity, low testosterone and depression. Treatment options are numerous: Viscosupplementation (replacing joint fluid), radiofrequency treatment, platelet rich plasma therapy (regenerative medicine) and spinal cord stimulation for nerve pain or Botox for headache and neck issues. Also, more traditionally, cortisone injections can be done but should be limited. These interventions coupled with a structured physical therapy program can make a dramatic difference in quality of life. Other common sense lifestyle changes include losing weight, exercise, orthotics, smoking cessation and using aspecialized mattress and pillows. –Dr. Lundquist Active Life Physical Medicine & Pain Center 623.535.9777

Q. What does a “Liquid Lift” cosmetic procedure involve?
A. As we age the fat pads in the face begin to migrate and atrophy. Along with thinning skin and gravitational effect, it seemsth at one day you look in the mirror and your face has fallen! These changes result in bags and hollowed dark circles under the eyes, a crease or fold around the nose and mouth area, heavy jowls, eye brows and lids, and more. Injectable products such as Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, Radiesse and Sculptra are used to replace lost volume to the face. These are all natural products which do not require sensitivity testing and yield a great safety profile. Along with laser procedures that tighten the skin and create new collagen growth, the dermal fillers offer a volumized, more symmetrically contoured appearance. Following injection of these products to the cheek area, around the lateral eye brow, and tear trough, the face appears lifted and youthful. These products may also be used to contour the nose or chin, by skilled injectors, with no pain or down time. Botox is often used in conjunction with facial fillers to relax animation lines, such as frown lines or crow’s feet. Most patients will require anywhere from 2-4 syringes per treatment setting, and the products will last between 6-24 months. Your doctor will help guide you to the best product for you. There may be some minor bruising and swelling. Results are instant in most cases. For the most part, these treatments can be done even days before a special event and results are dynamic. –Dr. Maltais Physician Skin Solutions at Arrowhead 602.843.4040
Q. What healthy lifestyle habits can help maintain or improve my oral health? A. Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the gum tissue and other structures supporting the teeth. If this condition is left untreated it can lead to tooth loss and may also interfere with other systems of the body. There is research that supports the idea that a person’s periodontal health may be related to one’s overall health. Routine tooth brushing and flossing along with regular visits to the dentist remain the foundation for a healthy mouth. However, according to the American Academy of Periodontology, a healthy lifestyle may also help reduce your risk of periodontal disease. The following are tips can help you live a healthier lifestyle and help maintain or improve your oral health. • A balanced diet keeps the body running at its best and studies show that foods containing omega-3, calcium and vitamin D reduce the occurrence or severity of gum disease. • Regular exercise may also help decrease your risk of developing periodontal disease. Studies show that people that exercise on a regular basis and kept their weight within a healthy range had a lower occurrence and less severe cases of periodontal disease. • Keep stress levels low. High stress levels can increase the destruction of the gums and the bone associated with periodontal disease. • Don’t smoke. Smoking not only increases the chance of developing periodontal disease, but it can also affect the success of treatments for existing periodontal disease.

Q. Is erectile dysfunction a natural result of aging? A. Erectile dysfunction isn’t a natural phenomenon of aging and shouldn’t be accepted as such, or treated with a pill. It’s a warning sign that there could be serious processes developing inside your body. Approximately 30 million Americans suffer from ED. Diabetes, hardening of the arteries, and kidney disease cause about 70 percent of the cases. Being overweight and smoking cause most of these diseases and ED often precedes their diagnosis by several years. While ED isn’t fatal, the diseases it’s associated with certainly are. There is a strong relationship between being overweight and erectile dysfunction. With weight gain, the body’s hormones begin to change. Blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides and blood sugar increase, which can lead to hardening of the arteries and decreased circulation to all of the organs, not just the heart. Yes, THE organ of most concern for males is also affected, and an organ without proper blood supply is dysfunctional. In addition, testosterone levels decline. That doesn’t help if you want to be the stallion you once were. Whether ED is present now or a future concern, begin treating the cause rather than the symptoms. Exercise regularly, eat healthy and lose weight. If you smoke, stop. Cut down on those “manly” portions of meat and eat foods high in antioxidants, phytochemicals and fiber – fruits, veggies, beans, nuts and whole grains. As you do these, you’ll likely find yourself toning up and getting firmer in all the right places. –Dr. Seale Renovo Clinic 480.214.5099
Q. What is the stomach flu?
Q. Is there reason to worry about the current silver fillings in my mouth?
A. Also called the “24 hour bug” or the stomach flu, viral gastroenteritis often hits entire families during the summer. This group of viruses isn’t related to the flu that attacks the respiratory system, but the viruses can cause miserable fevers and body aches.
A. In dentistry today, composite, or toothcolored fillings, are the latest technology. They are different from the older amalgam or silver fillings in that the composite fillings are resin based and made of ceramic and plastic compounds, whereas the amalgam fillings composed of a combination of mercury, silver, tin and copper. The resins allow the fillings to mimic the natural tooth color, making them more aesthetically appealing to most patients. These composite fillings have been long used in dentistry on the front teeth, but until recently, weren’t strong enough for the back teeth.
For those with the flu, symptoms can vary. Sometimes vomiting and nausea dominate, sometimes diarrhea and sometimes both. For some reason, most viral gastroenteritis seems to last only one to two days. However, the virus can continue to be contagious in the stool for weeks afterward. The rotavirus, against which infants are vaccinated, can often last for nine days and can cause fluid loss. There’s no specific treatment for the stomach flu, although doctors may give anti-nausea or anti-diarrheal medications. The most important complication of viral gastroenteritis is dehydration, which can often be life-threatening in children. Electrolyte solutions given by mouth (and kept down) are the best way to keep children hydrated, but some children may need to be rehydrated by IV in the emergency room or in the hospital. If your child has significant dehydration, the skin over their knuckles may lose turgor, remaining up after being pinched. They may have very dry mouths, and lose their energy and their ability to urinate and produce tears. If your child has these symptoms after a bout of diarrhea and/ or vomiting, take them to see a physician right away.
–Dr. Wen Sage Health Family Medicine 623.535.3857
The major concern with the silver amalgam filling is the mercury component, which makes up 50 percent of the filling. However, when mercury mixes with the other metal agents in the amalgam fillings its chemical nature changes, making it harmless. Even the small amount of mercury released from chewing isn’t enough to cause concern. Composite fillings do have other benefits over amalgam. One of the biggest advantages is that the composite filling does not contract and expand to temperature changes like the amalgam fillings do, making them far less sensitive. Composite fillings also bind better with the natural tooth, reducing leaking and the recurrence of decay. Despite the advantages of composite fillings, we typically recommend replacing the amalgam fillings only when it is medically necessary, such as when the amalgam is no longer sealed in the tooth correctly. When this happens, decay can begin forming. –Dr. Kim Litchfield Dental Care 623.738.3027

Q. With the triple digits here, how can visitors get the most from a summertime trip to Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium? A. For those wishing to visit Wildlife World during the summer months, I recommend arriving early. Doors open at 9:00 a.m. daily. Be sure to bring a hat and sunscreen.Temperatures will be relatively cool and the outdoor terrestrial animals will be more active, as keepers make their way to each exhibit to feed and clean. As the morning gives way to the afternoon, many of the species housed outdoors will wisely seek shade. To get a break from the warming temps, there are three air-conditioned, indoor exhibit buildings. In addition, the pathway through Dragon World, which features giant reptiles like a salt water crocodile, is heavily shaded. Once you've visited the zoo grounds, head east to the four building aquarium complex. These spacious exhibit buildings are also climate controlled and feature hundreds of aquatic animals including otters, stingray touch tank, sharks, penguins and our recently added, California sea lions. Best of all, families can enjoy a great barbecue meal and a cold drink at Dillon’s KC style BBQ restaurant at the aquarium. If you want to skip the heat altogether, there is a reduced aquariumonly admission after 5:00 p.m. A relaxing dinner next to the giant shark tank at Dillon's, followed by a stroll through the aquarium grounds during the evening hours. Have a safe and fun summer! Be sure to always watch your kids around water. –Dr. Stafford Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium wildlifeworld.com

Q. How can wheatgrass cleanse your blood? A. Blood supplies oxygen to all parts of our system, carries antibodies and vital nutrients all essential in keeping our organs in a healthy state. At the same time, blood carries away waste that cause illness, such as carbon dioxide, acids and toxins. Chlorophyll, found abundantly in wheatgrass, helps produce quality red blood cells, which remove waste products from every cell in the body. The many antioxidants in wheatgrass like vitamins A, C, E, bioflavonoids, lutein and other phytochemicals helps neutralize free radicals, which damage cells and lead to disease. The more than 100 types of enzymes in wheatgrass are vital to the process of blood cleansing. The liver, a detoxifying organ, cannot carry out its function without enzymes to break down harmful substances. SOD (Super Oxide Dismutase) and P4D1 (the first known substance to stimulate the repair of DNA molecules) are the most powerful enzymes found in wheatgrass. Wheatgrass is a rich source of roughage (fiber), which acts as a broom sweeping the garbage and toxins out of your digestive system. No matter how many nutritious foods or supplements you consume, if your digestive system isn’t properly cleansed, it’s unable to absorb the nutrients. This condition creates a conduit for sickness and disease. The healing benefit of wheatgrass produces an alkaline environment, which removes toxins from the blood and supports healing in the body. Wheatgrass powder, taken on a regular basis, is an easy way to begin the detoxification and cleansing process.

Q. Do we really need to consume 6-8 glasses of water every day to stay properly hydrated? A. For most of us, the answer is yes! Our bodies need water to function properly. It is so important for good health that we can’t survive more than a few days without it. You should be drinking enough to not feel thirsty. Other fluids such as juices, decaf teas, coffees and even frozen treats like popsicles and sorbets can count toward your daily intake requirement and make it easier to reach the daily goal of 6-8 glasses. It is important to recognize the signs of dehydration, which include unusual irritability or confusion, dizziness, dry mouth, sunken eyes and decreased urine output. Many seniors have a decreased sense of thirst or forget to consume enough water and dehydration often leads to hospitalization. Routinely drinking a glass of water or other beverage every couple of hours will make it easier to stay properly hydrated throughout the day. We all need to be diligent about drinking enough water, especially during the warmer summer months. Trying keeping a pretty pitcher or water bottle filled with cold water and readily available throughout your day and drink to your good health!

Q. How can I reduce pain and be safe during my summer workout routine? A. For a lot of people, summer is a great time to be active. But with increased activity, some people find themselves at an increased risk of injury. Here are a few things to think about to stay active and pain-free this summer: • Build slowly. Starting with a walk or lighter weights and building to a more aggressive workout can help prevent muscle strains and sprains. If you overdo it, give yourself a couple days of rest and use your LaserTouchOneTM to help speed recovery. • Look for low-impact activities. If you have sore joints already, high-impact activities like running and jumping can add to the pain. Try walking or swimming to get your heart pumping without the extra impact on your joints. • Work out with a pro. If you're starting a new weight routine, hire a trainer at least for the first few sessions to help make sure your form is correct. Without good form, you risk serious injury. • Gear up. Make sure you have the right gear for your chosen activity. • Use your LaserTouchOneTM before and after your activities for best results. Staying active all year round is important, but if you aren't careful, pain can result. If you strain or sprain a muscle, be sure to take a break from activities, take an anti-inflammatory medication, and use your LaserTouchOneTM to aid with healing and reduce pain immediately. –Cheryl L. Davis, LBMT Therapy Today 623.204.0800
Q. How often should hearing aids be replaced? A. In the past, hearing aids were built with what is known as a prescriptive circuit. This means that any time that your hearing loss changed, you would have to change your hearing aids to continue to receive the desired level of performance. It was common for wearers of these types of hearing aids to have to replace their equipment every two or three years. Now, most distributors are fitting programmable instruments that are capable of being adjusted to fit your future needs as your hearing loss becomes worse. This has resulted in the average life expectancy of hearing aids to double and even triple in some cases. In many cases, a person can wear the same pair of hearing aids until the literally “wear out”. If you are wearing a pair of programmable instruments and you are experiencing difficulty, then you should contact your local hearing health care professional. In most cases, they will charge a nominal fee to reprogram your current instruments, and many professionals will provide this service at no cost. Hearing is an ongoing deteriorating process and needs to be evaluated and reevaluated on an annual basis at the least.

FEEL GOOD & REJUVENATE

Men can put Their Best Face Forward, too
W
omen may devote more time to beauty and grooming than men, but many men are now interested in health and beauty regimens. They want to improve their appearances or enhance their natural features. Although the majority of beauty products are geared toward women, there are efforts men can make to look their best.
Facial care. A well-groomed face can go a long way toward making a strong first impression. Both men and women are susceptible to wrinkles, either from sun damage, heredity, or poor health habits like smoking. Using a moisturizer every day can help keep the skin supple and hydrated. Instead of bar soaps, rely on specialized facial cleansers, which can be gentler on the face and reduce the propensity for breakouts or allergic reactions. Although there can be something mysterious about a 5 o’clock shadow, if the hair is not properly groomed, you run the risk of looking unkempt. Use a sharp razor every time and lather up with a moisturizing shave cream to prevent skin irritation or nicks while shaving.
Breakouts.
Normally, oil-producing sebaceous glands in the skin produce an oily substance to lubricate the hair and skin. This sebum travels up along the hair shaft and then out through the openings of the hair follicles at the surface of the skin. If the sebum does not exit, or becomes mixed with an overabundance of shed skin cells and becomes clogged, it creates an environment ripe for bacteria. The pimple that forms is a byproduct of the inflamed or infected hair follicles. Using a gentle cleanser and being careful with the skin can help alleviate oil and dead skin cells. Should a pimple form, use a dot of toothpaste or even make a paste from an aspirin and water to help shrink it and clear it up faster. Men who want to cover a pimple can dab a small amount of a concealing makeup on the pimple to camouflage the redness.

Oral health. Keep teeth clean by flossing, brushing and avoiding foods notorious for staining teeth. You can also turn to whitening products available at the dentist or at the neighborhood store to brighten your pearly whites. Hair care.
Men may spend less time primping in the shower and afterward on their hair than women, however, that doesn’t mean men should ignore hair care. While it is not necessary to wash hair every day, do so when hair starts looking unkempt or oily. Stick to shampoos that wash clean and don’t leave behind any “shine enhancers” or residues that make your locks limp, particularly if you’re thinning up top.
Hands and feet.
Many men benefit from visiting a nail salon or even a podiatrist to have their digits cared for. At the very least, trimming nails, ensuring hands and feet are clean and moisturized and removing calluses and dead skin are essential when caring for hands and feet. Keeping feet dry and avoiding walking barefoot in certain areas, such as in gyms or locker rooms, can alleviate cases of athlete’s foot.

eople are well aware that they need to protect their skin from the ultraviolet rays of the sun. However, few may know they need to devote as much attention to protecting their hair.
Time in the sun can leave hair brittle, dull and more prone to breakage. People fail to realize that the scalp also is susceptible to sunburn. If your hair is particularly thin, you may be more at risk for sun-related trauma to the scalp. Combine damage from the sun with the drying factor of chemically treated pool water or saltwater, and you have a recipe for bad hair. There are a number of ways to protect the hair. Wear a hat when out in the sun. A hat will protect your face while covering your head and most of your hair. When swimming, opt for a swimming cap that will cover the hair and guard it from pool chemicals or seawater. Use a leave-in conditioner. Comb leave-in conditioners or regular conditioners through your hair before you head to the pool or beach. The conditioner will coat the strands of hair and protect it from drying out. Rely on an SPF product. There are leave-in treatments for hair and scalp that are a conditioner and sunscreen in one. If you need something that works in a pinch, simply dilute a little standard sunscreen with water. Then, spritz it through the hair, paying attention to the scalp and other easily burned areas, like the ears and nape of the neck.
Rinse your hair after swimming. Rinse your hair with cool, clean water to get out as much salt or chemical residue as possible as well as any sand. Keep hair from turning green. Contrary to popular belief, it is not the chlorine in the pool that causes hair to turn green. Oxidized metals in the pool water bind to the protein in the hair shaft turning it green. The chlorine added to the pool may speed up the oxidizing process. Special shampoos that chelate the metal in the hair follicle can help remove the green. Also, try rinsing your hair with a mixture of clean water and baking soda after swimming. Avoid excessive hair styling. Highlighting or coloring the hair directly before a fun-in-the-sun vacation can dry out or frizz hair. The sun and the saltwater will naturally highlight hair, so you could end up with a different color than you initially intended. If you have colored your hair, keep it pinned up and under a hat when out in the sun. Tips on how to lighten your hair naturally and gradually, without the chemical applications: Brewed Chamomile tea. Add to a mild shampoo and use as a lightener. The chamomile solution also can be blended with plain yogurt and applied to the hair, left to sit for 30 minutes then shampooed out. Honey. By mixing a ratio of 1 tablespoon honey to 6 tablespoons distilled water, you can activate the natural hydrogen peroxide present in honey and lighten hair. azhealthandliving.com | June 2013

How Men can Make More Time for Family
W
hen analyzing the role of men in the household, it is clear that those roles have changed over the years. Data from the American Time Use Survey and the Pew Research Center reveals that in 2011 men were spending more than double the amount of time performing household duties than they were in 1965. Despite that, many men still feel they are not spending enough time with their children. Professional commitments keep many men from spending ample time with their kids. While it may not be realistic for most fathers to walk away from their careers, there are steps men can take to make more time for their families.
Don’t overextend yourself at the office.
Fathers who can’t say no at the office might be legends in the boardroom, but that willingness to take on extra work could be cutting into the time they spend with their families. Learn to delegate more at the office, taking on only what you can handle in a normal day’s work.
Turn off the television. After a long day at the office,
it can be tempting to come home and unwind in front of the television. That time on the couch is valuable time that could be spent connecting with your family. While bonding over a favorite movie or television show can bring families closer 48
June 2013 | azhealthandliving.com
together, keeping the television on as background noise during dinner or other times of the day can make it harder for families to connect and share meaningful conversation. Turn the television off when eating dinner and work to reduce the time you and your family spend in front of the TV.
Leave the office at a set time every day.
The demands of a successful career can be significant, and many fathers admit to sacrificing family time for the sake of their careers. It’s possible to have a successful career and still spend more time with your family. One trick is to leave your office at a reasonable time every day, regardless of work demands. Making it home for family dinners each night can have a profound impact on your children. Technology has made it possible to stay connected to your work even when you aren’t in the office, so you can always get things done at home after dinner with your family while the kids are doing their homework.
Stop working on weekends. Men who travel often for business or those who simply cannot get away from the office on weeknights should reserve their weekends for time with the family. Don’t take your work home with you on the weekend and don’t check your email until you go back to work on Monday. Work-related distractions, such as checking your email on your smartphone, can take away from the time you have with your family.
Keeping Kids Active Once the School Year Ends
I
By MS
n many ways, today’s kids have busier schedules than any previous generation of youngsters. Many extracurricular activities including sports require a nearly year-round commitment.
Those busy schedules get a lot less hectic when the school year ends. Once school is out, kids used to a full schedule might find themselves with lots of time on their hands. Though it’s good for kids to squeeze in some rest and relaxation during their summer break, it’s also important for kids to stay active. The American Psychological Association notes that kids who are physically active are more capable of coping with stress and tend to have higher self-esteem than kids who do not. The following are a few suggestions for parents looking for ways to keep their kids active throughout the summer while still allowing them to recharge their batteries after a long school year.
Plan an active vacation Summer is when many families go on vacation, so why not choose a vacation that involves more than napping poolside? Though it’s still good to leave some time for relaxation, find a locale where you can embrace activities like snorkeling, hiking, kayaking, or other adventures. Such a trip might inspire kids to embrace an activity more fully, getting them off the couch not only while they’re on vacation but also when they return home.
Teach kids to garden Gardening might be seen as a peaceful and relaxing hobby, but it still requires a lot of elbow grease and hard work that pays
physical dividends. A garden must be planted, hoed, weeded and watered, and gardening gets kids out of the house to enjoy the great outdoors. When growing a vegetable garden, kids might embrace the chance to be directly involved in the foods that will eventually end up on their dinner tables.
Go swimming Few adults who work in offices haven’t looked out their windows on a sunny summer day and thought how nice it would be to be spending that afternoon at a lake, at the beach, or in a pool. Kids have the same daydreams during the summer, so take a day off every so often and take the kids for an afternoon of swimming. Swimming is a great activity that exercises the entire body including the shoulders, back, legs, hips and abdominals. Swimming helps kids and adults alike maintain a healthy weight while improving their cardiovascular health.
Limit how much time kids spend with television, video games, or the Internet Many of today’s kids are as tech savvy as they are busy. Watching television or playing video games are largely sedentary and can set a bad precedent for the months ahead. Parents should limit how much time their youngsters spend in front of the television or the computer during summer vacation. Kids might not love it when you turn their video games off or minimize their access to social media, but explain the limitations at the onset of summer and let kids know you expect them to be physically active, even if it is summer vacation. azhealthandliving.com | June 2013

Summer Tips to Keep Your Family and Home Safe
S
ummer is here. Protect your home while you’re away. Keep your children and pets safe around the house and water.
City Property Management, the only locally-owned HOA management company managing more than 286 homeowners associations across Arizona, is offering Valley residents summer safety tips going into the hottest months of the year. Every year senseless tragedies are seen. Here are some reminders on how we can better protect our loved ones and valuables.
Going away Even with high gasoline prices, many are planning family vacations and road trips. If you plan to be away this summer, make arrangements for someone to take care of your trash/ recycle cans. Have your paper delivery stopped while you are gone. Visit your postal service website to stop and restart your mail delivery. Turn off the water to your home and drain the hot water heater. Make sure the back yard and pool gates are locked and deactivate your garage door opener.
they have plenty of clean water, shade and a fan. Keep a child’s wading pool in the shade with fresh water for animals. Never leave children unattended in the back yard. Keep pool gates closed and locked to keep children out. Remember to watch young children around wading pools and change the water daily to prevent mosquitoes. Keep animals and children out of unattended cars. Temperatures in the vehicle can rise to more than 150 degrees within minutes.

If your pet has a barking problem, please be a responsible pet owner and respect your neighbors. You are not only disturbing neighbors which is a compliance matter, but also a city code violation.
It can get to 110 degrees or more during the summer. Give thought to where your children and pets will spend their time. Keep pets and children inside during the summer months. If you must leave your pets in the back yard, ensure

If you are out and about the neighborhood and notice any common area problems such as broken sprinklers, downed
trees, or other landscape concerns, report them to your HOA manager or board member. Your vigilance will bring quicker solutions to the problems. If you witness suspicious activity, call the local authorities.
Weed control The following is recommended by a local landscaper to make handling weeds a little easier. Visit a home improvement store and purchase a hand sprayer, preemergent and a weed killer that kills at the root. Next, spray all granite areas with pre-emergent every six months. This will coat existing seeds and prevent their germination, but will not stop seeds that have already started growing. A good weed killer should be applied to existing weeds. Many inexpensive weed killers on the market only burn off foliage and leave the roots intact. Be sure to use a product that gets the root. Weed control is an ongoing battle and may take 2-3 treatments to obtain noticeable results. Please remember to follow all safety instructions found on any products you purchase.
Tips to Protect Travelers’ Identity Courtesy of TrustedID, identity protection service
Getting ready to enjoy some well-deserved vacation time? Preparing for your departure also means making sure someone isn’t going to take your identity while you’re away.
Stay thin. Before you take on your summer adventure,
go through your wallet and remove unnecessary credit/debit cards as well as anything displaying personal information. Make copies of important documents before you leave, such as passport, driver’s license and travel tickets, in case something happens to them.
Stay secure. Hotel computers and unsecure Wi-Fi
connections are easy targets for hackers and identity thieves. If you need to check your email, always ensure that you are using a secure network.
Stay safe. Smartphones, tablets and laptops contain a huge amount of valuable data, so use room or hotel safes to lock valuable items away. Don’t stand-alone. Stand-alone ATMs are more likely to have skimming devices. Stick with bank ATMs whenever possible. Beware of pickpockets. Pickpockets prey on you in high traffic areas such as malls, amusement parks and sporting events. Some are only interested in cash, but others are out for your driver’s license and social security number. Keep your credit cards and ID in a secure place, like a money belt. Don’t keep all your cash in the pouch though—spread it around with some in your wallet, some in the hotel room and some even in your shoe. No checkbook checkout. Checking account fraud
is one of the most difficult types of identity theft from which to recover, and being far from home will only add to your frustration. When traveling, use cash, traveler’s checks, or credit cards for purchases.
Don’t brag. Don’t let the world know you’re away. When you share your excitement and plans on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc., the Internet now knows that your home will be unattended. There’s no better opportunity for a thief to empty out your house. azhealthandliving.com | June 2013

Explore Active Vacations
I
f the thought of lounging on a beach for a week isn’t exactly your idea of a memorable vacation, then you may enjoy more activity in your recreational pursuits.
Many individuals and families brainstorm their getaways well in advance. A jaunt to the coast may have satisfied an urge to wander in years past. However, if you’re interested in something that is a bit more physical and demanding, you may want a more active vacation. An active vacation is a trip that is built around physical activity. Instead of keeping the poolside chaise warm, you may be participating in a walking tour or hiking across a national park. Such vacations provide a respite from the daily grind and benefit the mind and body. Over the past half-decade, the number of people interested in active vacations has continued to grow and, as a result, more destinations are catering to such vacationers. Those ready to embark on an active vacation can choose from a host of options and locales.
Horseback riding Making a trek on horseback is a great way to see the countryside from a new perspective. Many resorts worldwide offer horseback riding in which you can tour mountains, crags, trails and other adventures. Some resorts pair horseback trekking with camping and other activities for a well-rounded adventure.
work with a water sports company that offers experienced guides to help you through some of the more challenging parts of the trip. Some vacation providers also may offer training and certification, such as becoming Scuba certified.
Biking and hiking There are thousands of miles of trails just waiting to be explored. Many national parks and wildlife refuges have walking and biking trails, or you can create your own travel itinerary and explore trails less traveled. Biking and walking tours also are possible in urban areas. See the sights and sounds of the city as a pedestrian and mingle with locals as you squeeze in some shopping.
Mountain climbing Boost adrenaline levels by scaling mountains or rocky crags nearby. Many companies offer climbing courses so you can learn before exploring. Rely on experienced climbers to assess your skill level and choose mountain ranges that match up well with your skill level. Novice climbers may be able to rent gear if they’re not yet ready to purchase.
Volunteering

Volunteering allows you to marry a vacation with social consciousness. For example, Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit with worldwide reach that helps make affordable housing a reality. You may be able to volunteer your time helping to build houses or making improvements anywhere in the world.
Many vacationers enjoy water sports like kayaking, canoeing, river rafting, riding jet skis, surfing, snorkeling and scuba diving. Depending on your skill level, you may be able to

3 Tips for Fab Abs This Summer Contributed by Orangetheory Fitness
Like the quest for the Holy Grail, women search for the secret of getting toned, flat abs. Women covet the washboard abs that we see in the Victoria Secret magazine or celebs’ toned tummies that we see in the movies… so how do we get there? Here are three tips for fab abs:
Attack your hidden core muscles Crunches only reach the superficial abdominal muscles, so in order to get dramatic results and tone your abs efficiently, you need to target the core muscles underneath the superficial muscles. To burn one pound of fat, you have to do 250,000 crunches, according to researchers at the University of Virginia. That’s 100 crunches a day for seven years!
Focus on whole-body exercises Using more than one muscle group will burn more calories than just isolating one, such as your abs. Combine a core workout with stationary cardio exercises to keep your heart rate up, such as planks and up-downs.
Rotate exercises and do less If you continually do the same types of crunches every day, your body will hit a “plateau” and you won’t see results. You need to rotate between various exercises to truly get fab abs. Even better than that, you only need to do abdominal exercises three times per week for fabulous results. azhealthandliving.com | June 2013

my Adams is a familiar face with bright red hair and sparkling blue eyes that glisten every time she smiles. She is a grounded actress who has exhausted the phrase “happy-go-lucky”. She is friendly, approachable and can blend in a crowd without labels. Adams is the fourth of the seven children born to American parents. She was born in Italy, where her father was a U.S. serviceman stationed abroad, which led them to often move from base to base. He was a gifted singer, a gift that would soon transpire into Adams. Her interest in singing, theatre and dancing grabbed locals’ attention. The earlier years as a young, independent adult were difficult times for Adams. She relocated to the United States, graduated from high school and then supported herself as a waitress and working in retail. Despite her challenges, Adams continued to perform at the local theatre to keep her passion alive, until Hollywood invited her in. Today, at the age of 38, Adams lives her dream of being a performer. She takes a moment to reflect back on her journey to fame and success.

“Thirty was a big deal for me. It was the age where I reevaluated everything - how I approached life and how I thought about myself. When I look at my 20s, or when I look at any period in my life, I think about how much time I’ve wasted trying to find the right man. It’s like, if I could go back and do it again, I would have taken guitar lessons or something. I would have put my energy into something that paid off in the end, instead of trying to improve myself for men. Oh, the time and the energy, trying to impress somebody who was actually a big jerk, you know? But the truth is, once you have a great man in your life, it allows you - or at least for me - to look at yourself and grow as an individual. And gosh, if I had known I was going to find this, my 20s would have been completely different,” Adams expresses. She has surely made her own identity in the glamorous world of Hollywood. She has won such awards as the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, the National Society of Film Critics award for “Best Supporting Actress” and the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female. Additionally, she was nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actress - Motion Picture. In January 2006, Adams was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Change Your Words. Change Your World. Sponsored by
Adams jumped at the opportunity to play the iconic Superman’s love interest and confident reporter, Lois Lane, in the upcoming Man of Steel, which opens on June 14. In a recent interview with Total Films, Adams shares, “I wanted her [Lois Lane] to be a woman other women could relate to. And not be sort of a pest. Lois can be kind of omnipresent, turning up at very inconvenient times - which she does! But you understand her reasons.” Just like any other superhero film presented on the silver screen, fans as well as actors have to be prepared to be replaced in the next part of the saga and Adams seems to be preparing for that possibility already. “I know other people have played the role, and others will play the role after me, but this was me putting my stamp on it,” Adams confidently expresses.

Travel Ideas for Active Seniors
T
hose who have said goodbye to the work-aday grind now have many hours to settle down and relax. People who have continually put off vacations in lieu of work responsibilities may now have all the time they need to explore the world. Traveling can be rewarding and relaxing. Those with a substantial retirement nest egg have numerous destinations at their disposal. Also, thanks to special senior discounts, travel may be more affordable than first expected. While certain destinations are not always practical for certain age brackets, there are many places you can visit comfortably and enjoy a wealth of memories.
Theme parks Although theme parks may seem carved out entirely for the adventure-seekers, there are other more placid activities that would appeal to those who prefer to keep their feet firmly on the ground. With animal preserves, water parks, fine dining and a bevy of hotels either in the park or directly on the outskirts, theme parks provide many activities for older travelers. Although theme parks require a lot of walking, many provide wheelchairs or motorized scooters. They also make a great option for those who will be traveling with the entire family, including children.
Beach resorts Provided flying is medically safe, a beachside vacation can be the ideal trip for those looking for the utmost in relaxation. For those who have passports, the possibilities are endless. Those who prefer to remain on relatively domestic soil can retreat to Puerto Rico, south Florida, the California coast, Hawaii and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Cruising A preferred vacation choice for the 50 plus because it offers the convenience of an all-inclusive package. With the myriad of activities offered on board, cruises are a versatile vacation 60

option. Also, there is no need to worry about traveling far for meals and other entertainment options, as everything is self-contained on the cruise ship.
Guided tours Those who want to experience a piece of history can sign up for tour packages backed by reputable companies. The tours may involve train or bus travel and various attractions will be visited.
RV trips Another self-contained vacation that is entirely up to the people traveling is vacationing by recreational vehicle. Customize routes depending on which areas you want to see. Companies like Cruise America RV enable people to rent an RV so they need not worry about the expense of buying one. Setting an itinerary and then establishing the pace enables travelers to tour the country or cross the border as desired. From beaches to national parks, many areas offer RV hookup areas and amenities.
Exotic tour If you were never able to afford or spare the time for an extensive vacation, you may now want to visit those exotic locations that have beckoned for years. Now could be the time to book a ticket for Europe. Those looking for even more adventure can travel to the South Pacific and explore tropical islands. Others may want to go “down under and experience the rugged outback or the culture of Australian city centers.
The Role of Estrogen and Age-Related Macular Degeneration By MS
Established Arizona practice is seeking a full-time academic, Arizona board-certified plastic surgeon to join their faculty. Candidates should have completed both an accredited program in plastic surgery as well as a fellowship program. Excellent opportunity! Please, email an updated Curriculum Vitae to md@azhealthandliving.com for consideration.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease that affects the part of the back of the eye, called the macula. This may cause the center part of a person’s vision to become blurry or wavy. It also can cause a blind spot in the center of vision. According to Prevent Blindness America, more than two million Americans, ages 50 and over, have AMD. That is a 25 percent increase from the previous decade. AMD is also one of the leading causes of blindness. Although anyone can experience AMD, it is most prevalent in people ages 65 and older. Gender also plays a key role in a person’s risk for AMD. According to the National Eye Institute, women have a higher risk for AMD. A reduction in estrogen production after menopause could also be a cause. In a study titled, Menopausal and Reproductive Factors and Risk of Age-Related Macular Degeneration, published in the Archives of Ophthalmology, researchers found that women who used oral contraceptives before menopause and received hormone replacement therapy after menopause had the lowest risk for advanced, or wet, AMD. However, these results came at a price. The same women who had lower incidences of wet AMD saw increased incidences of early, or dry, AMD when taking hormones. Although more research is needed, estrogen seems to play some type of role in the formation of AMD. An eye doctor can assess visual acuity at routine visits. You can also test your eyes daily by using the Amsler Grid, an AMD detection tool, and reporting any anomalies to your eye doctor. azhealthandliving.com | June 2013

Advice for Aging Athletes
etired professional athletes often speak about the difficult moment when they knew it was time to retire from competition. The transition can be easy for some, but far more difficult for others. Aging amateur athletes know you need not be a professional to realize there comes a time when your body is telling you it’s time to ease up. Athletes are used to pushing themselves and stretching their limits, but some limits are best not pushed. Such is the case with the limits posed by aging. While aging athletes don’t have to completely fold up shop and hang up their athletic equipment, there are steps they can take to ensure they aren’t pushing their bodies too far.
Recognize your new recovery time Veteran athletes tend to have a sixth sense about their bodies. They know how long they need to recover from common ailments like ankle sprains, knee pain, back pain and shin splints. Despite the body’s remarkable ability for recovery, it’s not immune to aging, and that recovery time will increase as the body ages. Whereas a sprained ankle might once have been as good as new after a few days of rest, aging athletes must recognize that it now might require more recovery time. Returning too quickly from an injury can only make things worse for aging athletes, so don’t push yourself.
Take more time to warm up As the body ages, its response time to exercise increases. This means the body needs more time to prepare itself for 62
June 2013 | azhealthandliving.com
cardiovascular and strength training exercises. Increase your warm up time as you age, gradually increasing the intensity of your warm up exercises until your body feels ready for more strenuous exercise.
Focus on flexibility The more flexible you are, the more capable the body is of absorbing shock that results from repetitive activities. As the body ages, it becomes less flexible, which makes it less capable of successfully handling the repetitive movements common to exercise. Aging athletes should focus on their flexibility, stretching their muscles before and after a workout. Activities such as yoga can work wonders on improving flexibility for young and aging athletes alike.
Don’t stop strength training Some aging athletes mistakenly feel they should stop strength training as they get older. No longer concerned about building muscle, aging athletes might feel as if they have nothing to gain by lifting weights and other muscle strengthening exercises. The body gradually loses muscle mass as it ages, and that loss puts the joints under greater stress when aging athletes perform other exercises. That can put people at greater risk for arthritis, tendinitis and ligament sprains. It is, however, important to continue to make strength training a part of your fitness regimen as you age. Aging athletes need not associate aging with ceasing their athletic pursuits. Recognizing your limitations and the changes your body is going through is an important element of staying healthy as your approach older adulthood.
Inviting an Aging Relative to Move into Your Home Factors to consider
A
s many seniors age, their ability to live independently is a compromise. An older adult may suffer from a medical condition that makes it difficult, or impossible, for them to drive an automobile and manage day-to-day life independently. In such instances, many younger relatives opt to invite an aging parent or grandparent into their homes. That option should not be taken lightly. Asking an aging relative to move into your home is often a selfless decision rooted in the affection you feel for that person. However, there are certain things to consider before inviting an aging relative to move in.
If you determine you will need to remodel your home, it is important to know that such projects can be very expensive. However, men and women with lots of available space in their home may find it is not ideal for seniors. For example, seniors with physical conditions may not be able to get up or down stairs easily. They might find walking from room to room in a large house to be too physically taxing. Before inviting an aging relative into your home, be sure the space available in your home is suitable to that person and their particular condition.
Space in the home
Proximity to medical facilities
When your household is taking on a new member, you will need to determine if the space you have is truly capable of handling that. Seniors often value their privacy, so sharing a room is not an ideal option, nor one that your relative is likely to embrace.
Many seniors need to visit medical facilities more frequently than younger adults do. This makes the proximity of your home to doctors’ offices a significant factor to consider. If your home is far off the beaten path, or in
an area where access to medical care is sparse, then your loved one’s health may be compromised. Discuss your loved one’s medical condition and history with them before extending an invitation. If they have considerable medical needs, and your access to reliable medical facilities is limited, then you might need to move before you can comfortably house them.
Personal finances The cost of caring for an aging relative is considerable. Because the costs are so substantial, many men and women care for their aging relatives on their own, which can still prove quite costly over the long haul. Taking on that role might affect income you sorely need, especially if you are forced to scale back your workload so you can better care for an aging relative. Inviting an aging relative to move into your home is a decision that requires careful consideration and a host of factors. azhealthandliving.com | June 2013

Diabetic Neuropathy, Peripheral Neuropathy Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, Plantar Fasciitis If you are suffering from lower back, buttocks and or leg pain or your feet or legs are cramping, numb or burning especially at night, you almost certainly have a condition which involves the nerves of the legs. The largest nerve in the body, the sciatic nerve (pictured in red to the right), starts in the lower back, runs through the muscles of the buttocks and down to the tip of the toes. If this nerve gets irritated, you can experience really terrible pain anywhere along the course of the nerve. You may also experience burning, numbness and odd sensations in your muscles. Irritation of this nerve may produce severe cramping or crawling sensations in your muscles. Of course, your back and leg pain can be caused by a pinched nerve in your lower back. This can be from a vertebra that is out of place, it can be caused by a slipped disc or it can be caused by spinal stenosis or any combination of these problems. Each of these conditions, bad discs, spinal stenosis or displaced vertebrae have very different treatments. Knowing exactly why you have your back and leg troubles is absolutely essential for effective care.

Spinal Stenosis, Sciatica, Lower Back, Hip and Leg Pain
So how do you find results? The answer is called Integrative Neurology. Neurology is the study of the nerves. This allows us to diagnose tough nerve conditions like spinal stenosis, disc problems and neuropathy. What happens next truly separates our integrative neurology approach from anything else available to help correct lower back, hip, leg and foot problems. We have pioneered techniques to decompress nerves, but also use a number of natural substances that have been shown in recent scientific studies to help nerves re-grow and repair. There are no current drugs that can do this. But that’s not all. We combine special electrical stimulation techniques with acupuncture. A combination that has been shown to correct abnormal nerve function and promote nerve repair. There simply is no better or more comprehensive system for diagnosing and correcting the cause of spinal stenosis, neuropathy and other conditions that cause lower back, hip and leg pain and numbness.
