"I did my research online for the practices in Arizona that offer varicose vein removal. I knew I wanted the EVLT treatment and wanted the procedure done by a Physician, not a cosmetic place. I narrowed it down to three Physicians and chose Dr. Sharma for his experience. I could not be more pleased with my experience at Arizona Vein & Laser Institute. Dr. Sharma is a wonderful physician. As he is performing the procedure, he explains what he is doing and is so concerned about making you feel comfortable. As for his staff, I cannot say enough good words. One thing I have learned in my lifetime is that your employees are only as good as you are. Dr. Sharma, you have a wonderful staff which says alot about you as an employer. I spent many office visits with them and every time they were pleasant, caring and professional. I was impressed by the way they worked as a team with Dr. Sharma. Thank you so much!" Joy A.
"I had called your office on a Monday morning to see if I could be fit in for an appointment as soon as possible because of a complication I had over the weekend. Being a new patient and never being seen at your office before it didn't matter because the woman who answered was not only kind, friendly and sypmathetic of my situation, but she was able to fit me in that very same afternoon. I have to say how incredibly impressed I was with the entire staff at this office but even more so with Dr. Sharma and Dr. Hecht. Their bedside manners are second to none. Thank you!" Scott Schrimp

elcome to our October issue. When you work for God and not for people, and you are closer to your destiny, the challenges you face may become tougher. However, remember God has equipped you to weather any storm. Your destiny is too great, and your assignment is too important to allow any barriers to come between you and your purpose. When you find yourself on unfamiliar ground, remember God didn’t crown you with favor to be easily shaken—set your mind on things that are above, because the battle is not yours! Colossians 3:2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 2 Chronicles 20:15 Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's. Isaiah 40:4 The crooked places shall be made straight, and the rough places smooth; Isaiah 54:17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord.
Exodus 14: 27 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and when the morning appeared, the sea returned to its full depth, while the Egyptians were fleeing into it. So the Lord overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. Isaiah 40:31 But those who wait on the LordShall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint. Corinthians 12:9-10 And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong. Deuteronomy 33:25 Your sandals shall be iron and bronze; As your days, so shall your strength be. Philippians 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ; Until next time, May the Lord set you free! “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” ~ John 8:32

Arizona International Pageants

The revamped competition prepares women for success
While many people are familiar with the glitz and glamour that can come with beauty pageants, they may not realize the hard work and dedication that each competitor brings to the stage and their platform. Monique Branscomb Wilhite, the director of Arizona International Pageants, which includes the Mrs., Miss and Miss Teen Arizona International Pageants, is working hard to spread the word about the many benefits of competing in the pageants. “Competing in these pageants helps women and young ladies to enhance the skills they need to be successful in today’s world,” Wilhite says. “By participating, they work on their communication skills and become even more engaged in their local communities.” Arizona International Pageants is a division of the Mrs. International, Miss International and Miss Teen International pageant competitions. Recently, Andrea Brower was named Mrs. Arizona 2017; Kayla Hyun was named Miss Arizona 2017; and Bella Hart was named Miss Teen Arizona 2017. At the international competition, Brower made the top 15 and Hart the top 10. Last year, notably, local teen Garin Harris not only won Miss Teen Arizona 2016 but also Miss Teen International 2016. Wilhite, who is also a successful attorney and founder of Branscomb Wilhite Legal Consulting Firm, was named Mrs. Arizona 2014. “When I was named Mrs. Arizona 2014, I found out that the Arizona International Pageants were flourishing 20 years ago – we’re looking to bring that back,” she says.
Wilhite explains that she is actively working to get the local community involved. Most needed are participants who are interested in competing, companies who are willing to sponsor the pageants, and volunteers who can help put on the events. “The Mrs., Miss and Miss Teen International pageants are part of a great organization,” Wilhite says. “There’s not a swimsuit part to the competition, it’s modest, family friendly, and there are sponsorships and scholarships available.” On the local level, Wilhite is working on securing sponsorships so that competing in the pageants isn’t cost prohibitive for competitors and their families. In addition to the competition aspect, each participant and titleholder has a platform—a cause they support personally and during their title year. Some examples include the March of Dimes, StreetLightUSA and the National Pain Foundation. The international competition’s platform is the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women Campaign. “I want to raise awareness about Arizona International Pageants because it gives women a chance to develop themselves, provides scholarships for continued education and helps them to raise awareness of platforms they care about,” Wilhite says.

HEART OF THE COMMUNITY
SUPPORT LOCAL
By Janine Skinner
Feed My Starving Children Make a global impact this holiday season
Mention the upcoming holidays and most of us are immediately transported to a favorite family tradition – preparing time-honored recipes, baking cookies, decorating our homes and spending time with family and friends. Increasingly, Valley families are creating a new tradition of giving back to their community during the holidays, particularly through service opportunities in which the entire family can participate. This year, Feed My Starving Children (FMSC), a Christian nonprofit that tackles world hunger by sending volunteerpacked, nutritious meals to 70 countries, invites families to start or continue a holiday tradition of service by volunteering at the Hope Filled Holiday event December 1 to 3 at the Phoenix Convention Center. This event will give area individuals and families the opportunity to join more than 13,000 volunteers who will pack two million meals over the course of the three days. Volunteers will work in two-hour shifts (there will be 10 shifts total). Each shift includes an orientation, time spent packing meals in an assembly-line fashion, and the opportunity to learn more about hunger in our world and how FMSC works to alleviate it. Families will come away from the experience not only feeling good about the positive impact of their efforts, but also more knowledgeable about the issue of hunger throughout the globe. Volunteering at the Hope Filled Holiday event can truly be a multi-generational endeavor. Children as young as five can come pack if accompanied by an adult, and there are
seated jobs for those who cannot stand for a two-hour packing session. Volunteers can begin signing up for their desired shift on October 23 at www.give.fmsc.org/ HopeAZ. “Packing with FMSC is the best volunteer experience around,” says FMSC MobilePack Development Advisor Justin Quintana. “Family and friends come together in a lively atmosphere, and after their two-hour shift, they know they’ve really made a difference in the lives of others. I can’t imagine a better holiday tradition.” In addition to meal-packing, the organization is fundraising to pay for the meal ingredients themselves through sponsorships, donations and an on-site raffle. Many local corporations already have signed on as sponsors and will use the event to serve as their holiday office celebration. If your business is interested in participating, contact jskinner@fmsc.org. Since 1987, FMSC has been packing meals that are specifically designed to reverse and prevent malnutrition. These “MannaPack” meals are used in schools, orphanages, clinics and feeding programs to break the cycle of poverty. In 2015, FMSC welcomed more than 1 million volunteers to pack nearly 273 million meals through its permanent sites, like the one in Mesa, and its nationwide MobilePack program. The charity spends more than 90% of total donations directly on feeding the hungry and has earned the highest four-star rating from Charity Navigator for 11 consecutive years.

The meals packed at the Hope Filled Holiday event will be part of FMSC’s response to current and anticipated famines around the world. FMSC plans to immediately pack and ship at least 10 million meals requested by partner organizations working in Somalia and Haiti. Thousands of FMSC MannaPack™ meals have already been sent, but the need continues to rise. Last year, FMSC sent 1.6 million meals to Somalia and 101 million meals to Haiti. Arizona packing efforts, including the two million meals that will be packed at Hope Filled Holidays, are an integral part of this effort. Due to violent conflict in South Sudan, many feeding programs in the region have been suspended as meal recipients of partner organizations have fled the country as refugees. There are an estimated 750,000 refugees from South Sudan currently living in Uganda, where FMSC food distribution partners are reaching thousands of these refugees every day with FMSC MannaPack meals. FMSC also is currently working to resume meal shipments to South Sudan once a secure route is successfully established. FMSC has been in the Valley since 2007, first with MobilePack events at area churches, and then with a site in
south Tempe. The site moved to larger quarters in Mesa in 2015 and now hosts more than 12,000 volunteers each month.

” – Cindy E. “I’ve been competing in strength athletics since the age of 15 and have been competing at a professional level for the last 5 years. It wasn’t until 2014 that I needed to seek treatment for a patella tendon tear that I received while competing at the Commerce World’s Strongest Man in China. I had only heard about PRP treatments and the great benefits that it could have on one’s injuries - that’s when I found Dr. Lundquist at Active Life Physical Medicine & Pain Center in Avondale, Arizona. To this day, I have received Orthovisc injections to both knees along with PRP. I have also received PRP treatments for muscle tears and other tendon tears that I’ve obtained while competing at World’s Strongest Man. I feel that without Dr. Lundquist knowledge in sports medicine and PRP that I would have had to have surgery. The PRP treatments have played a huge role in keeping me at an elite level. I have and will continue to refer other athletes for their injuries to Dr. Lundquist.” — Jerry Pritchett, 2x World Strongest Man Finalist

New Skin Cancer Treatment Now Available in Phoenix Nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is the most common form of skin cancer. While surgery is the standard treatment, there is a painless, nonsurgical treatment option called electronic brachytherapy that has been proven to be safe and effective for appropriate patients. Paradise Valley Dermatology in Phoenix is equipped with iCAD’s Xoft® Axxent® Electronic Brachytherapy (eBx®) System®, which is FDA cleared, CE marked, and licensed in a growing number of countries for the treatment of NMSC. The Xoft System uses a miniaturized high-dose rate, low energy X-ray source to deliver targeted radiation directly to a skin lesion. It typically requires only two visits a week for four weeks and can be performed in an outpatient setting, allowing most patients to resume normal activities immediately following treatment. Treatment with eBx leaves virtually no scarring and can help patients achieve similar low rates of recurrence with excellent cosmetic outcomes compared to Mohs surgery. 20 October 2017 | azhealthandliving.com

The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST), invented and patented by John Chao, DDS, MADG, is a scalpel-free, suture-free procedure for correcting gum recession. During the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique™, a needle is used to make a small hole in the patient’s existing gum tissue. Through this pinhole, special instruments are used to gently loosen the gum tissue. These tools help expand and slide the gumline to cover the exposed root structure. There are no grafts, no sutures, and no incisions needed with the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique™. It simply involves the adjustment of the existing tissue. Dr. Chang and Dr. Svans were two of the first dentists in Arizona and the United States trained and certified as Pinhole Surgical Technique™ Providers. Dr. Chang is the President of Pinhole Surgical Technique Study Group for Certified Clinicians in Arizona, and regularly communicates with Dr. John Chao for clinical findings and advanced training. When Does Toe Walking Become Problematic in Children? Learning to walk is a major milestone in a young child's life. Parents eagerly await this milestone, but then may quickly fret when toddlers become so fast on their feet that they become difficult to catch. As children learn to walk, they may demonstrate a type of walking known was "toe walking." This is walking on the toes or the ball of the foot rather than having the heel and bottom of the foot touch the ground. Although toe walking can be an entirely natural way to develop normal walking patterns, sometimes it can be a sign of autism or other neurological conditions. Naturally, parents may grow concerned if they see their toddlers repeatedly walking around on their toes. The Mayo Clinic reassures that walking on the toes or the balls of the feet is fairly common for initial walkers. Many children outgrow toe walking after age 3. However, some children continue to walk on their toes beyond toddlerhood. WebMD says that more than half of young children who toe walk will stop by age five. Even these children may be completely healthy and developing normally. Toe walking may be a behavioral habit and nothing to be concerned about. According to a study of 1,400 children in Sweden, nearly 5 percent of all young children had toe walked at some time. Former toe walkers did so for one to two years before walking normally. Children still walking on their toes after age 5 only did so about 25 percent of the time. According to the Children's National Medical Center, many children who toe walk do not have developmental or neuropsychiatric problems, especially when toe walking is an isolated abnormality. However, those who exhibit other developmental delays or symptoms of neurological immaturity may require further testing. Toe walking is sometimes a symptom of muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy or autism. According to the Autism Research Institute, toe walking may be a result of a dysfunctional vestibular system, which is quite common in autism. The vestibular system provides the brain with feedback regarding body motion and position. Children with autism may not be receiving the right body motion and positioning signals and begin compensating through toe walking. 30

With cerebral palsy, toe walking can be caused by abnormal development in the parts of the brain responsible for controlling muscle function. Toe walking with muscular dystrophy can occur when muscle fibers weaken over time. Various therapies can help offset toe walking. These include physical therapy, visual-motor training, bracing/splinting, and serial casting. The Mayo Clinic says that if conservative treatments are ineffective, surgery to lengthen muscles or tendons in the back of the leg may be recommended. In many cases, toe walking as a singular symptom is no reason for parents to be concerned. Children often grow out of it as they become more confident in their newfound walking skills.
Understanding Inflammatory Breast Cancer By MS
Many women know that a lump, pain or some other abnormality in the breast may be indicative of breast cancer. But a rash, redness or swelling may also be linked to a rare form of breast cancer known as inflammatory breast cancer. Inflammatory breast cancer, or IBC, accounts for roughly 1 to 5 percent of all breast cancers in the United States. The symptoms of IBC can differ from symptoms of other forms of breast cancer, and a rash-like appearance may be part of it, according to Healthline. The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. says IBC is a fast-growing breast cancer that infiltrates the skin and lymph vessels of the breast. When IBC is present, no distinct tumor or lump can be felt and isolated in the breast. Instead, earlier symptoms include the appearance of a rash or small irritation that may be mistaken for an insect bite. Over time, the irritation can become more red, swollen and warm. Other changes to the breast skin may occur, including nipple inversion or flattening, a pitted appearance to the skin or dimpling. This dimpling is caused by a buildup of fluid in the breast that's due to cancer cells blocking the lymph vessels. This prevents the fluid from draining normally. IBC is a very fast-moving cancer. By the time symptoms are discovered, IBC may already have advanced to Stage 3, necessitating aggressive treatment. This usually includes a combination of surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and hormone treatments. Breast cancer comes in many different forms and can present in various ways. Never overlook any abnormality on or around the breast. azhealthandliving.com |

Eight Ways to Make More Time for the Most Important Things in Your Life One of the most common lines that people love to use: “I wish I had more time.” Maybe it’s more time to spend with family or friends; more time to exercise and eat healthy; or more time to go back to school. Whatever it is, how do you make more time for those truly important things in your life? The reality is we all have the same 24 hours. The difference is some people know how to better manage it than others. When it comes to making time for the important things, here are a few suggestions:
Minimize, minimize and minimize some more There was a reason Marie Kondo’s novel about tidying up your space to become happy was so successful. There is truth in her message of eliminating the unnecessary and finding what you love in the process. Get rid of what does not bring you joy. This can be old items or even toxic relationships that no longer serve you. Less is really more.
Being busy does not bring you value In American culture, it can be all too easy to be running around completing task after task. Many people view this form of productivity as determining their worth in society. It’s wise to assess what in your life is bringing you value and maximize that rather than trying to do things that just don't feel right and make you feel unworthy on the inside. Business is an excuse and distraction to overlook the things in which you may be afraid to focus your energy on.
Differentiate between efficiency and effectiveness Your time is precious and needs to be allocated to the most important things. Utilize your time to be both effective and efficient. Being only effective can be a time-consuming action. While complementary, being only efficient can lead 32 October 2017| azhealthandliving.com
to sloppy results. When you are doing any task, approach it within a concept of both maximum efficiency and total effectiveness to reap the best results. In your personal life, this is achieved through being present and genuine in your interactions.
Single task and hold your focus Many people find themselves casually checking a single email, and before long they snap into full-fledged work mode. Develop a schedule and follow it religiously. It may be hard to find your groove initially, but if you stick to it, little by little it will become a habit.
Know what you hold important It is a challenge to know how to dedicate your free time if you haven’t discovered what you love. Find the activities where your creativity flows and your heart sings. Only in these states are you going to find yourself in the states of joy that make you feel life is worth living.
Address problems at the root When you have the time to dedicate to the important things, you don’t want work problems to keep popping up. If there is a problem at work, address it from the start. Don’t keep putting it off, because it will fester at inopportune times. This goes both ways. If you have a personal dilemma with a family member, don’t run from it by adopting workaholic ways. Confront your problems head on to solve them with best results. Shying away will only allow the problem to become worse in the shadows.
Getting and staying organized When it is time to be with friends and family the last thing you want to do is housework. Dedicate an initial cleaning and mass organization of your space. After this initial step, take a little time each day to clear your space and organize everything into its given area. The clarity of your physical space lends to clarity of mind. Then, there is mental space to focus on what matters, and not be distracted by the mess around you.
Block out time just for you You must become your top priority. Declare certain times of the day and week that are just for you. This time can be for you to indulge in your favorite pastimes, meditate or even to do nothing. This time is yours to center yourself and think about what you are presently encountering in life. Live in every moment, and focus on the present. azhealthandliving.com |

includes swelling, redness and pain. asculitis occurs when the blood vessels suffer from inflammation due to some type of in ury. This condition can weaken the blood vessels and change their size, making them become larger or narrower.
What Causes Vasculitis? While each case of vasculitis is unique, this condition is believed to be caused by the immune system attacking the blood vessels. Though it is not known why the immune system attacks the blood vessels, it often occurs as a result of an infection. asculitis has also been linked to other conditions, such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, which can potentially trigger it at any time.
What Are the Symptoms of Vasculitis? asculitis can affect many different organ systems in the body, which is why there are many different symptoms associated with this condition. If vasculitis affects the skin, it can cause rashes to form around the body. ther symptoms commonly associated with vasculitis include fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, and muscle pain.
How Is Vasculitis Treated? It’s important to visit a vascular specialist if you’re worried about vasculitis. inding the right treatment includes learning about your specific condition and its potential causes. The vascular specialist might recommend medication to get rid of your symptoms. Sometimes, vein doctors recommend in ections or vascular surgery to ease symptoms.
There are a number of other studies that compared cortisone in ections with dry needling acupuncture . In these studies patients obtained better pain relief from acupuncture treatment than from the in ection. Acupuncture thus works through the body’s built-in pain suppressing machinery. with breast cancer in their lifetime. Breast cancer is most common among women. It is the second leading cause of death among women, but is the most common cause of death among women worldwide. In the U.S., over 220 thousand women annually will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 40 thousand will die of the disease. Although rare amongst men, 2150 men will be diagnosed and 410 will die each year.
decay by age four, and children between the ages of five and seventeen are five times more likely to have tooth decay than asthma, hay fever, or chronic bronchitis. Tooth sealants, combined with regular tooth brushing, are an effective way to help prevent tooth decay in children.
There has been a gradual reduction in female cancer rates in women aged 50 and older. Perhaps secondary to a decline in prescribing hormone replacement therapy after menopause. Death rates have also seen a decline since 1990 due to better screening, early detection, increased awareness and improvements in treatment options.
Tooth or dental sealants are plastic coatings that bond to the grooves of teeth to create a smoother, easier-to-clean tooth surface that helps ward off decay. Sealants can be applied as early as age 6, when molars appear, and typically cost between $35 to $60 per tooth. For every $10 spent on oral health prevention, an estimated $8-$50 can be saved in future restorative and emergency treatment, as well as the potential time lost at school due to dental problems.
Less than 1 percent of all breast cancer cases develop in men, approximately 1 in a thousand. Breast cancer in men usually will be detected at a later stage and carry a higher mortality rate. The cancer will usually present as a hard lump underneath the nipple and areola.
To help prevent cavities, help your child avoid sugary drinks and treats, teach good oral health and brushing habits, schedule your child’s dental checkups regularly, and see your dentist if your child has any ongoing complaints about tooth or mouth pain.
Risk factors can be radiation exposure, high levels of the estrogen hormone, or a family history of breast cancer, especially if related to the BRCA2 gene.

proper sleep. Can this be remedied?
• Sleeps in an abnormal position • Snores • Sweats heavily during sleep • Is difficult to wake up • Has headaches • Is irritable • Falls asleep or daydreams in school • Wets the bed • Has been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) In children, sometimes the problem results from swollen tonsils and/or adenoids that block the airway. It can also be caused by dental problems because malocclusion (misalignment) of the teeth is believed to affect the positioning of the airway. Even swollen nasal passages could cause your child problems breathing during sleep. In these cases, it’s a good idea to talk to your child’s pediatrician, his dentist and an ear, nose and throat specialist. If your child is sleeping poorly and it isn’t due to a sleep-disordered breathing problem, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends a relaxing setting at bedtime— low lights and quiet. Don’t substitute watching television or videos for personal interaction with your child before bedtime. When our children have trouble sleeping, it affects their lives, their health and our relationships with them. Be on the lookout for the signs such as crabbiness, tiredness, headaches and other, as well as any possibility of ADHD. This could be a sleep-disordered breathing problem, or simply a problem sleeping. It deserves the attention of your child’s pediatrician, dentist, ENT and you. –Dr. Croft Vistancia Orthodontics 623.566.0800 azhealthandliving.com | October 2017

Q. How does Invisalign work? A. Your dentist will discuss your treatment options with you during your consultation. After it has been determined that you are a good candidate for Invisalign, he or she will create a 3-D image of your mouth using photos, impressions and x-rays. The dentist will then map out the route your teeth will take to their new, ideal position. Each aligner tray marks a new phase of this transition and is worn for roughly two weeks.
Invisalign aligners should be worn for most of the day, 20 to 22 hours, throughout your treatment. Overall treatment times vary depending upon the severity of your orthodontic condition. There are no diet restrictions with Invisalign because you can take the aligner trays out before eating. In fact, not only does this method make eating more enjoyable, it makes maintenance easier, too. When you need to brush or floss your teeth, you simply take out the aligner tray. • Invisalign requires fewer visits to the dentist. While you will change your aligner tray every two weeks, you will only visit your cosmetic dentist every six weeks. • Unlike metal braces, most people will not notice that you are wearing the aligner trays. They are nearly undetectable and completely removable. This is advantageous for times when you want to look your best, such as important events, meetings, or when taking photographs.

.. Sometimes as we age, our bones become thin, resulting in osteoporosis. When this happens, the vertebral bodies that make up the spinal column become fragile and weak. Compression fractures can result from this, causing increased pain and debilitation. In addition, these fractures create a forward curvature in your mid back area that pushes you to lean forward, changing your center of gravity. A procedure available that can help correct this, and almost instantly reduce the pain you are experiencing if the compression fracture is new, is Kyphoplasty.
A. Just like an automobile needs gasoline
Kyphoplasty is an innovative way to improve pain from the compression fracture and promotes restoration of the vertebral body. This is now available to be done in the outpatient setting, if your physician feels that you are a good candidate. Under X-ray guidance, the compression fractures are identified, and through a needle, a balloon is inflated and medical grade cement is placed. Once the cement has solidified, often the pain will be reduced and function and mobility will be restored. This is a fairly low-risk procedure that can help dramatically improve your quality of life. In addition to treating osteoporotic compression fractures, it can be utilized for traumatic compression fractures. A physician knowledgeable in this area can discuss with you if you are a candidate or not.

and maintenance to run well, we need to eat healthy and get doctor checkups when necessary. Choosing good food helps determine our energy level and remember: God created tasty, beautiful, healthy fruits and vegetables in all colors of the rainbow. Adding nuts and natural foods is an added bonus. Coffee and caffeine energy drinks may boost your energy level for a while but can result in a “crash “later on. One can of soda contains more sugar than the American Heart Association recommends for daily intake. Life is full of stress: it can affect our energy level and steal our joy. Simplifying our lifestyle can resolve some stress issues, such as completing projects that loom over us, taking a walk, taking time to smell the flowers, enjoying the sunshine, even saying “hi” to neighbors. Having a strong family, good friends and a life based on attending religious services regularly may not only give you strength and comfort on life’s sometimes difficult journey, it may help you to live longer. “Those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.” Isaiah 40:31 Along with these suggestions, why not consider wearing an MBdisc energy wristband, originally designed for athletes? Wearing it on the right arm when you have a busy day may help give you added stamina and endurance.

Q. How can I tighten aging skin, reduce cellulite and lose inches by the holidays? A. Diet, exercise and a healthy lifestyle should always be a starting point, but sometimes we need a "kick start" or a little help to speed results. Furthermore, with aging and weight loss, we need to consider skin tightening when losing weight. Fortunately, there a number of non-invasive and highly effective procedures that will enable individuals to achieve their desired results with no downtime and minimal discomfort. If losing inches is the goal, then FDA approved non-invasive body contouring procedures, such as Sculpsure, can achieve significant results. Body contouring and fat reduction with one of our fat cell freezing or fat cell heating devices can permanently de-bulk large areas or sculpt your body the way you want. With both of these devices we are able to address almost any area of the body. If cellulite or skin tightening is the primary concern, then we recommend Velashape ™ III, its powerful deep thermal energy irons out cellulite and helps to tighten skin. It can also be combined with body contouring for amazing results. If a double chin is your concern, than Kybella injectable treatments can help. Other concerns such as wrinkly, saggy knees or stretch marks can be addressed with Sublative RF, Ultherapy, Sculptra or microneedling. A consultation is always the best way to create an individualized body-contouring plan to achieve your holiday body.

A. As people are living much longer lives,
many of them suffer from chronic health conditions that cause limitations in day-today activities. Many people have a hard time accepting the changes in their health and the limitations in lifestyle they can create. It is important for your mother to understand the risks associated with refusing help. Try talking with her about all of the possible negative consequences of continuing to try to do everything on her own, or simply neglecting those things she cannot manage. One bad fall can lead to a hospitalization and a stay in a care center that may become permanent or worse if help does not come soon enough. Neglecting proper nutrition and personal hygiene can also have terrible consequences that lead to further declines in health and functioning, as can improper management of prescribed or non-prescribed medications. Even the lack of socialization can be detrimental for people who stay inhome because they cannot manage going out on their own any longer. Sometimes, if people fully understand the risks, they are more willing to make changes.

Want Healthier Kids? Get a Pet If youngsters have been eyeing fuzzy kittens or boisterous puppies at nearby shelters or pet stores, parents may want to give in to those cries for a family pet. Pets are added responsibilities, but the health benefits associated with pet ownership may be well worth the investment of time and effort. Caring for a pet is sometimes viewed as a childhood rite of passage, but there's much more to the experience than just learning responsibility. Experts say a child's emotional, cognitive, physical, and social development can be enhanced through interaction with a family pet. Studies continue, but the effects of family pets on children was heavily researched by developmental psychologist Gail F. Melson in 2003. Melson looked at literature on child-animal relationships and found that children who had pets were better able to understand biology and children who could turn to pets for unconditional emotional support were less anxious and withdrawn than their peers without family pets to turn to. Data from a small study conducted by researchers at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University reported that adolescents who had animal experience were more likely to see themselves as important contributors to communities and more likely to take on leadership roles. Pets also can help children develop into well-rounded individuals. Playing with a pet requires children to engage in physical activity and can help stimulate motor skills. An English study conducted in 2010 and published in the American Journal of Public Health found that children from dog-owning families spent more time in light or moderate to vigorous physical activity and recorded higher levels of activity counts per minute than kids whose families did not own a dog. Pets may help with allergies and respiratory ailments as well. A 2012 study by the American Academy of Pediatrics discovered that children who have early contact with cats and dogs have fewer respiratory infections and ear infections and need shorter courses of antibiotics than children who have not had contact with pets. A study from Dennis Ownby, M.D., a pediatrician and head .

Pets can contribute to cognitive, physical and emotional wellness in children. of the allergy and immunology department of the Medical College of Georgia, found that having multiple pets decreases a child's risk of developing certain allergies. He found that the children who were exposed to two or more dogs or cats as babies were less than half as likely to develop common allergies as kids who had no pets in the home. Pets also may foster social interactions, which can benefit children who are shy. Inviting others over to meet pets can help children make friends and find others with similar interests. Children may also confide in pets and develop their self-esteem. Studies have indicated that the type of pet a family has, whether it's horses, dogs, snakes, etc., does not matter, as all companion animals have the potential to benefit children.
Fruit Juice & Kids Health By MS
Today's youth continue to battle obesity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the percentage of obese children in the United States has more than tripled since the 1970s. Although many factors can contribute to obesity among children, researchers with the American Academy of Pediatrics are now warning parents that fruit juice can be a contributor. In suggestions that overwrite previous recommendations from 2006 in which the AAP said children between the ages of six months and six years could have up to 6 ounces of fruit juice a day, fruit juice is no longer recommended for children under the age of one. Plus, health experts say that older children should choose whole fruit sources in lieu of fruit juices whenever possible. According to an article "Reducing Childhood Obesity by Eliminating 100% Fruit Juice," by Janet Wojcicki, Ph.D., MPH and Melvin Heyman, M.D., MPH and published in the American Journal of Public Health, excessive fruit juice consumption is associated with increased risk for obesity. There also is recent scientific evidence that sucrose consumption without the corresponding fiber is associated with metabolic syndrome, liver injury and obesity. Obesity is not the only risk associated with fruit juice. Although fruit juice in moderation can be a nutritious beverage, drinking juice from a bottle can lead to nursing bottle dental caries. Also, "toddler's diarrhea" has been associated with juice consumption, particularly in juice with a high fructose to glucose ratio, according to data published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition. Many health experts are concerned by excessive fruit juice consumption that can lead to an increased caloric intake and obesity. AAP researchers suggest parents of young children mashup fresh fruit instead of giving them juice. Water, milk and breast milk/formula should be the main liquid for children. Older children can have limited amounts of 100 percent fruit juice, but should be steered toward other low-calorie drinks instead. azhealthandliving.com |

FITNESS, NUTRITION & SPORTS
STAY ACTIVE & FIT
By MS
Has a More Accurate Way to Assess Obesity Been Developed? Being obese or overweight is cause for concern at any age. Doctors and fitness experts have long relied on body mass index, or BMI, as a method of determining healthy weight ranges based on a ratio of height to weight. However, BMI may not be the most accurate measure of fitness. In May 2017, a team of researchers at the Mayo Clinic unveiled the Body Volume Indicator (BVI)ÂŽ as a new tool for assessing body size and health. Researchers spent 10 years in collaboration with BVI America LLC to lead an extensive study on fat distribution and how to better assess whether a person is within the healthy zone for his or her body type. Rather than look at height and weight, BVI looks more closely at abdominal fat concentrations, which proponents consider a more accurate way to determine potential health risk. BVI is considered to be a more precise means of estimating weight distribution and fat around the organs. This visceral fat in the abdominal area can impact a person's risk for diabetes and heart disease, offers Mayo Clinic researchers. Experts at Harvard Medical School touted the dangers of abdominal fat as early as 2005, saying, "For health, the issue is not how much you weigh, but how much abdominal fat you have." It's unclear how visceral fat leads to negative health outcomes, but many believe this fat interferes with the normal functioning of internal organs. Through a professional app, clinicians can more accurately estimate the body volume, percentage of visceral fat and distribution of body fat for patients. The app compares an image of a patient standing sideways to one of him or her taken head-on. This information will be combined with age, gender and level of physical activity to paint a better picture of how individuals measure up. Across North America, obesity remains a major concern. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination 46 October 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
Survey, 2009-2010, found that more than two in three adults are considered to be overweight or obese. Furthermore, about one-third of children and adolescents between the ages of 6 and 19 are overweight or obese. Although these statistics may change now that BVI will be used in conjunction with other measures of body weight and personal health, they provide an eye-opening glimpse into the health of children in the United States. Although there is no single cause of obesity, nor one ideal approach that can help prevent it, education remains a viable tool. Having more accurate means to identifying problem areas, such as visceral fat, can help the public in various ways.
Home Exercises to Prepare for Golf Season Courtesy of Quintero Golf Club, www.quinterogolf.com
Unless you get on the golf course early in the morning, Arizona is still pretty toasty to be playing most of the day. The good news is, there are several ways you can prepare for golf season from the comfort of your home (and your pool!):
Balance: Grab your golf club and assume setup position. Lift one foot slightly in the air behind you, standing on the other. Make slow swings back and through. Do it for 10 seconds and switch legs. Strength: The simple, classic squat can be done just about anywhere. Place your feet shoulder width apart, extend your arms, and squat down as far as you can for 10 seconds. Gradually work up to 30 seconds per squat. This will improve core strength when it’s time to get back on the course. Flexibility: Lie on one side with the bottom leg straight and
the top leg bent with inside of knee on ground. Rotate your trunk back attempting to put the top shoulder blade on the ground. Hold two seconds, return to start position and repeat for 10 reps. Switch sides.
Technique: This one is done in the swimming pool! Help get rid of bad habits using the weight of the water to slow down your movements. Take a wide stance with a deep knee bend. Make sure your shoulders are beneath the water, let your arms and hands hang softly between your legs. With your hands still separated, move into a backswing position, while remaining under the water at all times (no splashing). Practicing this move will get you away from the tendency to cast the club at the top. azhealthandliving.com | October 2017

EXCEL & ACHIEVE
CAREER, BUSINESS & FINANCE By Leslie Greenman, financial adviser and author of Dating Our Money: A Women’s Guide to Confidence with Money & Men
Ways to Outsmart the Impulse Buy Many of us have emotional triggers that lead to overspending. Understanding how the need for stress relief or the need to demonstrate your own self-worth can lead to overspending is essential in order to curb the dangerous habit. Here is some advice on how to understand the psychology of overspending and what you can do stop it.
Do not let the psychology of the sale get the best of you. If you are a chronic over spender, sales pose a special temptation. When there is a great sale, two factors are usually used to justify spending. First off, we fear that if we don’t take advantage of the sale now we might not be able to get that item later. Secondly, most women love to feel like they have gotten a great deal when they are shopping. Going over budget is going over budget. It doesn’t matter what purchase is deepening your debt; just that your debt is increasing.
Do not shop when you have the blues. Studies have shown that we are inclined to pay more for items when we are sad. Have you ever been down in the dumps and indulged in a yummy dessert or gone back for seconds of whatever your comfort food of choice might be? Well, the same emotional triggers that lead you to seek comfort through food can lead you to seek comfort through spending if you head to the mall instead of to your favorite restaurant. However, we all know that the happiness we achieve through spending is fleeting. Soon we are right back to being down in the dumps.
Invest in relationships, not in “stuff.” It is perfectly natural to want to give back to those who give to you. It feels good to treat a friend to lunch or to see your son’s face light up when you agree to buy him the video game he wants. This satisfies the nurturing instinct in women, in particular. In addition, it helps us assuage the guilt we often feel for the shortage of time we have to spend with our loved ones. What we need to realize is that what other people really want, children and adults alike, is to spend time with us. Use cash! Consider this: The average American spends 12 to 18 percent more when they use credit cards versus cash. 48 October 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
Buying on credit is a trap to be avoided if possible—and the best strategy for defeating temptation is to use cash whenever possible. If you use your credit card, you will probably end up paying two or three times over in interest payments. Bring only cash with you when you are shopping, or at the very least, use your debit card. Reaching for your credit card to pay for something you would not otherwise be able to afford is no longer an option.
Remember, small amounts add up to huge consequences. Sometimes you can overspend by missing
opportunities to spend less. Do you and your family order sodas when you eat out? Do you buy coffee on the way to work each morning? If so, spend a moment filling out one of the cost calculators available online. The results will be eye opening! There is never a bad time to start living more financially responsibly. Sure, you will have to make sacrifices, but those sacrifices will be made up multiple times over through the wonderful things you can achieve through saving and strengthening your financial outlook.
A2M – A NonSurgical “Cure” for Osteoarthritis and Inflammation is Here!
Wouldn’t it be great to wake up in the mornings without stiffness and pain in your arthritic joints? Or to take your dog for a long walk without worrying about “paying for it” the next day? Now, imagine being able to have like new joints – without replacement surgery. This is the promise of a protein molecule called Alpha-2-Macroglobulin, more commonly referred to as A2M. A2M is a recently discovered compound that arrests the degradation of the cartilage caused by osteoarthritis (OA) and protects the joint.

Today I have something like 23 projects in the works driven by great female characters of different ages and races,” Witherspoon writes in a recent essay for Glamour. “There is a film about an astronaut, a film about the entrepreneur who invented Barbie, and a film about the young, brave American girls who were the first women to serve alongside Special Ops in 2010 in Afghanistan. I think it’s worth noting, I self-funded my production company for years. I think there’s this fallacy that because I’ve been an actor, people are going to hand me stuff. Nobody hands me anything. I’ll wake up earlier; I’ll stay up later. I will put my money where my mouth is. I have to read faster, and I respond quicker than other producers. I have to call and call and call executives until they say yes to my projects.” Added to her production company, Witherspoon recently starred in “Home Again,” a romantic comedy directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer and produced by her well-known mom, Nancy Meyers. “Reese herself holds up her end of the bargain, and it's easy to see that she's having a blast back in the rom-com saddle,” cites E! News. “She told E! News that she accepted the role not because she 50

was looking to return to romantic movies, but because she found Meyers-Sheyer's script so compelling and was chomping at the bit to work with the mother-daughter duo.” “Nancy Meyers has been so incredible to me, I've known her for many years," Witherspoon says to E! News. "To get the opportunity to work with her, one of the most important female filmmakers of all time, it's just incredible. To watch her work and watch her mentor her daughter and me through this process, it's just encouraging.” In addition to the recent film, according to the Tennessean, Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman recently shared the stage at the Grand Ole Opry for a national fundraiser that raised relief funds for Hurricane Harvey victims. “I've learned a lot about hard work from my mother,” Witherspoon shares with Southern Living magazine. “She was a nurse for 35 years and a teacher. And, you know, just loving what you do makes a job not feel like a job. She taught me to have a passion for my interests and to work into those interests.” Coming up, Witherspoon’s next project to hit the big screen is “A Wrinkle in Time,” which will be out next year. “The second film is ‘A Wrinkle in Time,’ which was written by Jennifer Lee, who wrote ‘Frozen,’ and directed by Ava DuVernay, who directed the award-winning films ‘Selma’ and ‘13th,’” Witherspoon writes in her Glamour essay. “Ava is making history as the first African American woman to direct a movie with a budget of over $100 million, and she is creating a world where an African American girl, Storm Reid, is the hero of a huge supernatural story about good versus evil. Her guides through the universe are Oprah, Mindy Kaling, and me—and we are definitely a new kind of superhero in film… I got to go to work every day and sit for three hours in the hair and makeup trailer with Oprah and Mindy, whom I admire so much, and talk to them about everything from running a business to writing a novel to finding the perfect English muffins. Needless to say, it was a dream job.” To keep up with Witherspoon, “like” her on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ReeseWitherspoon, follow her on Twitter @RWitherspoon, or follow her on Instagram at @reesewitherspoon. azhealthandliving.com |October 2017

STAY HEALTHY
AGING WELL By Susan Bowerman, M.S., RD, CSSD, CSOWM, FAND, Director, Worldwide Nutrition Education and Training at Herbalife Nutrition
Five Tips to Help America’s Aging Population Stay Healthier and Happier As we age, most of us better understand our abilities and our limitations, helping us make better decisions. We understand that nutrition and exercise play a vital role in how we feel, and that looking after ourselves on a daily basis can help us feel younger as we age, and younger than our true age. Here are five tips to help stay healthier and happier as you age.
Dealing with hormonal changes Hormonal changes are a fact of life for both men and women. These changes may be accompanied by weight gain, especially in the midsection. Hormonal changes can also lead to disrupted sleep or mood changes, which can be very stressful. So in addition to staying active and watching your weight, it is also important to find balance in your life and perform stress-relieving activities. Yoga, meditation, or simply engaging in a new activity may help you to deal with the effects of hormonal change.
Balancing your nutrition A healthy diet and active lifestyle is the best way to protect your health as you age. Balanced meals contain protein to keep you full and satisfied, plenty of fruits and veggies to provide vitamins and minerals, and just enough healthy fats to provide flavor. Fill about two-thirds of your plate with healthy carbs such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans, and the remaining one-third lowfat proteins, such as fish, poultry or lean meat.
Maintaining healthy bones as you age Strong, healthy bones are really built during adolescence and young adulthood. That’s because the body’s ability to store calcium in the bones peaks at about age 30, so this is a critical period during which you can maximize bone density. It’s important to get plenty of calcium in your diet and regularly engage in weight-bearing exercise at any age, but it’s particularly important when you’re younger to ensure bone health as you age. But that doesn’t mean all is lost if you’re older. Taking in adequate calcium every day 60 October 2017

(needs increase to from 1000 mg daily to about 1200 mg per day after age 50) and regular weight-bearing activity can help maintain bone strength.
Maintaining muscle mass and a healthy weight as you age Building muscle mass can be done at any age. When you establish the right habits at a young age - which includes consuming adequate protein and engaging in resistance exercise - you’re more likely to continue those habits throughout your life. The amount of muscle mass you have determines, in large part, your resting metabolic rate. So, the more muscle you have, the more calories your body burns at rest. Building and maintaining muscle mass is one of the best defenses against “creeping obesity” - the slow, incremental upticks in your body fat and weight as you age.
Maintaining healthy skin as you age The foods you put into your body, and the way you take care of your skin when you’re young, can affect the appearance of your skin as you age. Your skin relies on protein to manufacture its supporting structures, and plenty of fluid to help prevent dryness. Getting into the habit of cleansing, moisturizing, and regularly using sunscreen when you’re young can help you to maintain a healthy complexion as you get older. Skin damage that happens when you’re young may not show up until decades later, so your best defense is to get in the habit of taking good care of your skin now. Photo Courtesy of Herbalife Nutrition
Moving is the best medicine. Keeping active and losing weight are just two of the ways that you can fight osteoarthritis pain. In fact, for every pound you lose, that’s four pounds less pressure on each knee. For information on managing pain, go to fightarthritispain.org.

When Weight Loss May Be Worrisome Dieting is a way of life for many people. The Boston Medical Center says an estimated 45 million Americans go on a diet each year, spending $33 billion annually on weight loss products. The figures are close to $7 billion in Canada. However, for one segment of the population - the elderly - weight loss can be a sign of something wrong. The Mayo Clinic says that malnutrition is a serious health concern among seniors. Inadequate nutrition can result in weight loss that has far-reaching health effects. These include a compromised immune system, which increases the risk of infections, poor wound healing and muscle weakness that can result in falls and fractures. Malnutrition also can lead to further disinterest in eating, which only compounds a weight loss problem. Weight loss and loss of appetite are common among seniors, particularly those with dementia. Learning to recognize weight loss signs in the elderly can help others act promptly to correct the problem. According to senior care advocate and placement center A Place for Mom, the senior population is at risk of malnourishment for several reasons, including: · Lack of energy to cook. · Specific health conditions that impact ability to prepare or acquire meals. · Lack of appetite attributed to decreased taste bud function or depression. · Inability to afford quality foods. · Side effects of certain medications. Unfortunately, malnutrition is a very common, yet widely undiagnosed, problem among seniors. If a friend or loved one has visible bones under the skin; loose dentures; loose rings on fingers; has dropped clothing sizes; or is leaving food on his or her plate, they may be suffering from malnourishment. Concerned loved ones can take several steps to determine if their friend or family member is malnourished. · Observe loved ones' eating habits at home to see how they are eating. Routinely check the refrigerator and pantry to see which foods your loved one is eating. In a nursing home 62 October 2017

setting, check with a nursing administrator to see how mealtimes are going. · Speak with doctors to see if weight loss is a side effect of medications or another health concern. Bring up any concerns you have about malnutrition. · Provide finger food or easy-to-manage foods for seniors who have lost dexterity so they're still able to feed themselves. · Encourage foods that are fortified with nutrients. Supplementation with nutritional shakes can help fill the void. · Make meals social events so that the concept of gathering around the table for food is fun. · Mild or moderate exercise can stir up one's appetite. Walking or chair-based exercises can help make people more interested in food. · Introduce new foods that can whet the appetite. Weight loss can benefit some people. But among the elderly, weight loss may be a byproduct of malnutrition.
Help Senior Drivers Maintain Their Independence
osing the ability to safely operate an automobile can greatly reduce a person's independence. hat is why periodic driver evaluations may be met with some reluctance. Aging men and women who don't want to avoid potential conflicts with concerned family members can take their own steps to ensure they maintain their ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
Schedule a driving safety evaluation. When drivers' abilities to operate a motor vehicle become suspect, a thorough evaluation should be scheduled. he evaluation should not be handled by a family physician or family member, but by an unbiased third party like a Certified riving ehabilitation pecialist. his is a therapist who has special certification to assist people with disabilities, including older adults, with driving. hey can help individuals with adaptive e uipment or techni ues if driving issues stem from something that can be addressed. Figure out if the car "fits" the individual. A program called Car it can help drivers assess if their car is suited to their abilities. A team of trained technicians and or health professionals work with participants to ensure their vehicles are e uipped for maximum safety and comfort. A properly adjusted vehicle is as important as one's cognitive and physical abilities. Adjustments can include mirror placement, good foot positioning and sitting at the proper distance from the steering wheel. People can learn about an upcoming event at www.car-fit.org. Take a driver improvement course. river improvement courses are provided by various organizations, including some insurance companies. AA P also has a river afety Course to lower the risk of traffic violations, collisions and injuries. Completion of these courses can help drivers enhance their abilities behind the wheel and may result in lower premiums for mature drivers. Keep the mind and body fit. egular exercise and a healthy diet can be assets for mature drivers. Mental fitness techni ues and brain exercises can improve reaction time, while aerobic and strength-training workouts can keep the body in shape.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called friends, red lights called enemies, caution lights called family. You will have flats called jobs. But, if you have a spare called determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith and a driver named Jesus—you will make it to a place called success.” – Author Unknown
