Provision Project Providing help to breast cancer patients when they need it most

Receiving a breast cancer diagnosis is scary. In addition to the avalanche of medical challenges and information that a patient faces, they must also juggle their job, household bills, and other financial obligations. That is where Provision Project comes into the picture. The Arizonabased nonprofit helps breast cancer patients that are undergoing active treatment in the hopes of bringing a bit of financial relief during a critical time. Provision Project was founded in 2015 by breast cancer survivor Jan James after her beloved friend Renee Miki lost her own breast cancer battle. During Miki’s battle, she and James had discussed how most breast cancer nonprofits brought awareness to the disease but did not provide badly needed financial relief. Provision Project is changing that one cancer warrior at a time. Provision Project founding board member Joyce Owen is James’ sister. “A few years ago, our mission became very real to me,” explains Owen. “We got a donation in memory of a woman who died from sepsis because her family needed food. Like any mom would, she bought the food and skipped her treatment with tragic consequences.” While the world waits for the cure, Provision Project helps women choose treatment instead of necessities. The nonprofit also adds an extra level of experience in a requirement that all its board members either have had breast cancer or have had a loved one fight the disease. After a quick application process, there are a variety of expenses that can be paid for on behalf of a breast cancer patient. Some of those expenses include housing, utilities, food, transportation, health insurance, and co-pays. Applications open on the first of each month and applicants are vetted through their medical providers. Bills are also vetted to ensure authenticity. “We never pay women directly, we only pay vendors,” explains Owen. Although applications open on the first of each month, Owen notes that by the end of that day there are already more applications than the organization can take. Funds for financial relief are available to women in Arizona and across the United States. 16

Ongoing financial donations are vital to Provision Project’s mission. “One of our October fundraising campaigns will be focused on building up our recurring donors through our $20 a month giving in 2020 and beyond,” says Owen. “Recurring donations make for a healthy foundation for any nonprofit.” Another source of creative funding comes from what Provision Project considers “birthday fundraisers.” “These are held by women who know our organization,” Owen explains. “Some have received help from us while going through active treatment and want to give back to Provision Project. These are often women who understand exactly what it’s like to go through this heinous disease.” Each birthday fundraiser will typically raise between $200 and $10,000. Still another way to get involved is the 6th Annual POUND for Pink! event that will take place 10 a.m., Saturday, October 24, hosted by POUND Fitness Pros from all over Arizona. It is a cardio jam session that allows you to be the star of your own workout with Pilates and yoga-inspired movements. All proceeds benefit Provision Project. To register for the fundraiser, email Kai O’Neil at kaityme@gmail.com.
