Skin for the Holidays with Laser Skin Resurfacing In Arizona with our harsh environmental exposure, many women are in need of a laser resurfacing treatment, but almost an equal amount are hesitant to have the procedure done. Many of the fears women experience have to do with social down time or discomfort. However, non resurfacing treatments, in many cases, are simply put, not as effective. Laser resurfacing utilizes laser CO2 or Erbium technology to ablate layers of skin while supplying deep general heat to the area. This allows for new skin and collagen to grow, “filling� in problem areas such as wrinkles or scars and firming the tissue. The overall effect is brighter, tighter, smoother, radiant skin. Different levels of ablation are an option and determined on a case by case basis. A full face treatment may be performed or limited problem areas, such as around the mouth or eyes. Multiple areas may also be done in one session such as the face, neck and chest. Often at home products are used to prep the skin for the treatment especially with darker skin types. Medications are prescribed and ointments provided to ensure a comfortable safe procedure and recovery. The area treated if often locally numbed with topical or injected anesthetics. Following the treatment the skin appears bright red and swollen for one to three days and then some peeling is expected for another three days. Makeup may generally be applied at day five covering any remaining redness. It is usually advised that the patient take three to seven days off from social duties, however working from home is possible since there isn’t any discomfort experienced in this time. Sun avoidance is imperative for many weeks following the treatment while new cells are replacing old damaged cells. Skin improvements are seen over the course of three to six months. Cost may range from $1200-$3700 depending on the areas being treated and depth of treatment. The results in skin texture and tightening are quite amazing. Laser resurfacing is an excellent option to erase the years past and look incredible for years to come, results often lasting 3- 5 years. By providing a safer, gentler, and more affordable option to surgery, this is ideal for the person who wants maximum results from one procedure.

Welcome to our Business & Career issue. Alike many, I believe starting a career and growing a business is a spiritual journey. In the beginning stages we envision who or where we would like to be. Next, we take the necessary steps we feel are adequate to embark in this new direction. We then find the tools and resources to enhance our on-the-job performance to become the best in our career or business of choice. However, the final destination is not, nor has ever been, of our selection. I believe God has a divine plan already set for each person upon arrival. However, many decide on a new route. Despite how many believe they are traveling in different directions – the bridges, crossings and connections remain. When you are not sure how your new business idea came to mind, or why you are working somewhere you feel is leading nowhere – remember that God is working behind the scenes. When beginning something new, praise God for the opportunity. Ephesians 1:16-18, “Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers; That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints.” Therefore, when you embark on a new venture (business or career) in search of stability or growth, be sure to let God guide you. He will open doors for you that no man can shut! The key to long-term success lies with Him. Without God, nothing is possible, but with God, nothing is impossible. To inspire you to look to God for all your affairs, I would like to share five Bible verses every small-business owner should know, and in closing a freestyle poem submitted to Arizona Health & Living for consideration in this issue, by Jeshua Padilla, my 17year-old son.

Success Being something that once was only a dream. Realizing that you are within reach of what once was only a figure of image in your mind. Having the enjoyment and excitement of knowing that you can be greater than you ever thought. Accepting that, you can be whatever you wish, as long as you work hard for it and never give up no matter what may stand between you and what you want to achieve. All of these are just sections of what it takes to become successful. Everyone sees success in different ways. I personally see it as what you can make of yourselves and the inspiration you have within to drive your determination that pushes for greatness. That’s just me. Other people may see it as finishing a paper and turning it in on time, or being early to class. There is no definition to describe what success really is. It is a matter of what you are willing to do or go through in order to make your own twist on what the word “Success” means to oneself. Because at the end of every situation, the only success we all have, is the knowledge of what we set out to achieve ourselves.

Spider Monkeys under Threat of Extinction By Grey Stafford

Spider monkeys are one of the most agile of all primate species. These medium sized New World primates found in central and South America are built for life among the treetops. They have relatively long arms and legs for their

size, which may help, explain the origin of their common

name of spider monkey. Their strong, prehensile tail serves as a “fifth limb" enabling them to cling to branches often using only their tail. Together, their specialized tails and long limbs are perfectly suited to helping these animals move through the tree canopy. Spider monkeys are under threat of extinction, some species critically so, due to habitat loss (i.e.,deforestation) and hunting. Females usually give birth to one offspring after about a 7-8 month gestation. Infants are completely dependent on their mothers for food, protection and locomotion the first several months of life.

Changing Lives through Financial Empowerment

he YWCA Metropolitan Phoenix is proud to provide financial education to all people. Many people are among the working poor, struggling to pay their bills and feed their families, even while working 40 or more hours each week. For over 102 years in Arizona, the YW has provided services to promote women’s education and leadership to fulfill a common vision – equality for all people. The YW believes a financially educated woman provides a better quality of life for herself and her family. While financial literacy is impacting individuals across all income levels, women continue to be significantly affected, especially those who find themselves in the position of sole financial provider for their household. This is often because of divorce, domestic abuse, or the death of a spouse. These women, many of whom are just entering or returning to the job market, are especially vulnerable. An NYU study published in 2010 found “Single women mothers possess only 4 percent of the wealth of single fathers: $100 compared to $25,300.”

To combat the issue of financial insecurity, the YW began offering financial literacy courses to low-income women and families in 2006. Today, the YWCA Own It Financial Education Program works to empower women and men of all ages, backgrounds and socioeconomic status to “own their power” through improved financial decision-making. The free four-week course is designed to teach students basic money management skills, including how to use credit wisely, manage a bank account, increase savings, communicate about money and develop a budget. YWCA Own It classes are taught by financial professionals, all of whom volunteer through the YW. Classes are offered in both English and Spanish, and are provided at locations all-around the valley through YW community partners. In 2013, the YW partnered with Dress for Success, East Valley Child Crisis Center, City of Phoenix, City of Avondale, UMOM, YMCA Glendale, Fresh Start, Salvation Army Kroc Center, AASK, Steps of Faith, Girl Scouts Arizona Cactus Pine Council and Florence Crittenton. The YW continues to look for new community partners to help reach their goal of 200 Own It graduates by the end of 2013. Fighting to Win the War on Breast Cancer id you know that over 4,000 women in Arizona will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year?

With such a large population of both survivors and newly diagnosed breast cancer patients, quietly over the past several years, some of the most exciting research and clinical trials surrounding breast cancer treatment and technology have been taking place right here in Arizona – largely due in part to Dr. Robert Kuske. Dr. Kuske moved to the valley after leading the breast cancer program at the University of Wisconsin as Full Professor of Human Oncology. Before that, Dr.Kuske was chairman of Radiation Oncology at the famed Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, where he was also Chief of Staff over 470 physicians.

Recently named a Health Care Leadership Award Winner in the category of Research and Innovation, he is the original pioneer of a breast cancer treatment called brachytherapy, which is a five day radiation alternative for women with early stage breast cancer. “The procedure places radiation sources – usually tiny pellets the size of pencil lead, inside and adjacent to a cancer, or inside an area that may contain residual cancer after surgical removal of the visible tumor mass,” Dr. Kuske says. “Using brachytherapy, doctors can reduce the radiation exposure to nearby normal tissues that do not need – and can be harmed by – the radiation.” Given the level of success of this treatment option, Dr. Kuske is currently serving as co-principal investigator in the largest radiation trial in medical history, squarely focused on breast brachytherapy. This trial, sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, has now completed testing 4,300 women. “We believe the results, once analyzed and presented in coming months, could inspire the biggest paradigm shift in how patients will be treated since Marie Curie herself discovered radium in 1896,” Dr. Kuske says. However, this inspirational hometown doc does not stop at simply researching ways to help women fighting breast cancer– he is jumping in and helping with the fight right alongside them. Most recently, he partnered with Arizona Center for Cancer Care to move onto the Virginia G. Holly Rose Wins the Battle Against Breast Cancer

I

and Helps Make a Difference

n 2009, prompted by a friend’s Facebook post, 39-year-old Holly Rose performed a breast self-exam. She found a lump – breast cancer. What happened changed her life, and the lives of everyone around her, forever. Immediately after the diagnosis, Rose endured nine months of intense treatments, including two surgeries, four months of chemotherapy and two months of radiation. During that time, she and her family were overwhelmed by the kindness, compassion and generosity of their community. “We had meals delivered to our home for weeks at a time by friends and strangers,” Rose says. “Friends showed up at our doorstep, ready to scrub our floors. Neighbors brought by wigs, cards and flowers. People offered to help with our kids. Not only did I have my physical community, I had an online community on Facebook as well. There was always someone cheering me on and cheering me up with I was at my lowest moments. I was so grateful for every act of kindness that I decided I wanted to do something to give back.”

Giving back, to Rose, meant finding a way to help other women facing the same diagnosis. Rose started the Live and Give Foundation, Inc. with the help of childhood friend, Kate Kunberger. Known by its campaign, Don’t be a Chump! Check for a Lump! the foundation’s mission is to motivate women to perform breast self-exams and detect breast cancer in the early stages, when it is the most treatable. “What most people don’t understand is that we are all at risk of contracting breast cancer,” Rose explains. “Only 10 percent of all breast cancer is hereditary. The other 90 percent is caused by lack of proper nutrition, toxins in the environment and other unknown factors. If you detect breast cancer early, you have almost 100 percent chance of surviving.” The Live and Give Foundation has become a driving force in breast cancer awareness and prevention, gaining sponsors, community grants and

supporters. The foundation has formed strong relationships with other nonprofits, doctors and breast cancer related businesses. A popular program that grew out of the foundation’s efforts is the Wig Out Program, which provides free wigs to women undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer treatment in Arizona. “Our Wig Out program is unique,” Rose says. “Once our clients are approved, they can visit a reputable wig shop and select one wig up to $250, and we pay the bill. We accept tax-deductible cash donations to our Wig out program. As of July 2013, we have assisted over 100 women with a free, custom wig!” Rose is thrilled with the shape her dream is taking. “I’d love to thank my husband, John, for his continual support, my daughters, Hannah and Ivy, for being my inspiration, my entire community for their ongoing support and our donors and sponsors for believing in our cause and supporting our education program. Parenting a Child with ADHD

concerned parent’s first response to the possibility that their child may have ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) is often, “What can I do about it?” As a parent, you can help create home and school environments that help your child do well. Here are some ways to get started: Get a proper evaluation. Be sure your child has complete medical, educational and psychological evaluations. This will also help identify any other conditions that either look like, or often go with, ADHD. Do not blame yourself. ADHD is due to problems in certain areas of the brain and in most cases, it runs in families. Although the home environment can affect its symptoms, poor parenting or a chaotic home environment does not cause ADHD. Learn all you can. It is up to you to be a smart consumer and learn to distinguish accurate information from inaccurate information.

ensuring Success at School Learn about your educational rights. The more you know about your child’s rights under two federal education laws – the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act – the better advocate you will be. Be an effective case manager. If you are seeking or managing school accommodations, keep a record of everything. Work with your child’s school. School meetings to discuss accommodations should be attended by the principal (or a representative), a special educator and a teacher that knows your child. You have the right to ask that others who understand ADHD or your child’s special needs, such as a doctor or the school guidance counselor, be allowed to participate too.

All adults who care for your child – parents, grandparents, babysitters – should understand how best to manage your child. Find out if you have ADHD. Many parents of children with ADHD often discover that they have it too and need the same types of evaluation and treatment as their children. Learn to enforce effective discipline. Learn to be proactive – not reactive. Instead of focusing on bad behavior, use positive behavior intervention techniques that teach and reward good behavior. Help your child learn from mistakes. Children with ADHD have difficulty making the connection between their behaviors and the consequences. Parents can help their child make these connections and learn from them. Boost your child’s confidence. “I love you no matter what!” Let your child know that you will get through the smooth and rough times together. Help your child with social skills. It can be hard for kids with ADHD to make and keep friends. Other children may be rejectingthem for being hyperactive, impulsive or aggressive.

Identify your child’s strengths. Many children with ADHD may have strengths in areas like art, athletics, or computers. Encourage these strengths. Do not use or withhold these activities as part of a behavior modification plan.

Learn the tools of successful behavior management. Enroll in a parent-training course that can teach you strategies to change troubling behaviors and improve your relationship with your child.

Set aside a daily “special time” for your child. Constant criticism can erode a child’s self-esteem. A “special time,” whether it is an outing or just time spent enjoying each other, can build your child’s self-confidence.

Oral Contraceptives and Breast Cancer Risk By MS

Oral contraceptives have prevented pregnancies for decades. However, some women take contraceptives to help regulate menstrual period symptoms and to treat other issues, including acne. A number of studies indicate that taking contraceptives appears to slightly increase the risk of developing cancer among younger women, according to the National Cancer Institute. However, discontinuing oral contraceptives for over 10 years, returns risk levels to normal. The Mayo Clinic notes that it is difficult to weigh the effect of birth control pills on breast cancer risk. Although some studies have shown a link between the two, studies that are more recent do not show an increased risk for breast cancer while taking birth control pills. The variety of birth control pills available perhaps plays a role in why studies linking contraceptives and breast cancer risk have conflicting results. Birth control pills may combine various levels of two female sex hormones, called estrogen and progesterone, and this combination works by preventing the release of eggs from the ovaries, changing the lining of the uterus to make it inhospitable for a fertilized egg, as well as changing the mucus at the cervix to prevent sperm from entering. A triphasic pill, in which the dose of hormones is changed in three stages over the course of the woman's monthly cycle, seems to be the biggest culprit in raising breast cancer risk. Women who started menstruating at an early age and subsequently began taking contraceptives in their teenage years also are at a slightly higher risk. Experts believe that oral contraceptives could affect cancer risk because the estrogen and progesterone have been known to influence the development of some cancers. It is believed the more estrogen a woman is exposed to, the greater her risk for breast cancer. It is not known if this is only the case with naturally occurring estrogen, man-made synthetic versions used in contraceptives or both. Women can weigh the pros and cons of taking contraceptives with their gynecologists. Some believe that taking contraceptives could decrease risk of other types of cancers, including ovarian and endometrial cancer. Women who take contraceptives to control severe premenstrual syndrome, known as premenstrual dysphoric disorder, may find that the benefits outweigh the slightly elevated risk of breast cancer. The first warning sign to domestic violence

P

sychological abuse can be as damaging to the psyche as physical abuse can be to the body. However, little is written about this common problem, which is typically the precursor to physical abuse. According to the Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), 95 percent of men physically abuse their intimate partners also psychologically abuse them. Psychological abuse consists of impairing the mental life and impeding mental development. It creates distorted beliefs, taught by the abuser, about the world. Those beliefs become ingrained in the victim’s mind and can interfere with the flexibility that is needed to constantly assess the environment and respond appropriately. Knowing the signs of psychological abuse may save men/women from the physical abuse that so often follows. Signs of psychological abuse : • Your partner uses finances to control you. • He often threatens to leave. • She seeks to intimidate using looks, gestures or actions. • He smashes things. • Your partner seeks to control you by minimizing, denying and blaming. • He/she makes light of the abuse and does not take your concerns about it seriously. • You are continually criticized, called names and/or shouted at. • He emotionally degrades you in private, but acts charming in public. • He humiliates you in or public. • They withhold approval, appreciation or affection as punishment. Effects of psychological abuse on the victim, from the Center for Relationship Abuse Awareness: • A distrust of his or her own spontaneity. • A loss of enthusiasm. • An uncertainty about how he/she is coming across. • A concern that something is wrong with him/her. 26

The worst part is the average person’s habitual thoughts are negative. The Myth of Work/Life Balance Seven ways to rethink your approach to the daily grind

I

n a perfect world, “work” and “home” would balance out neatly. People would work from 8:00 to 5:00 each day and then come home and spend uninterrupted time with their families. However, most are working longer, more stressful hours, and work is spilling over into evenings and weekends. No wonder a recent survey of North American employees found that 87 percent of respondents say their work/life balance (or lack thereof) is negatively affecting their health. Work/life balance, at least in the sense that most think about it, is a myth. The dance between work and life is more about rhythm than balance.

There is a time and a season for everything. For

most people, there are seasons when hard work and extra hours are a necessity, and seasons when there is more time for rest. When you love what you do, you will thrive during the busy seasons and fully appreciate the downtime.

When you believe your job has no meaning, of course you are going to feel guilty for spending so much time there. It is the realization that you are making a difference in the lives of others that lets you let go of the guilt and truly immerse yourself in what you are doing during both seasons.

First, let go of the work/life balance notion. Instead, think “purpose and passion”. When you

approach every day with passion and purpose, whether you are working long hours to prepare an important presentation or staying up late with your daughter to work on her science project, you can find joy and happiness in whatever it is you are pursuing at that moment. Passion and purpose fuel people to work harder and longer with more joy and satisfaction in both work and life.

Look at your work/life blend over the past year.

There will be days when your work or family requires more time from you. Instead of driving yourself crazy trying to achieve a balance daily, look at your life on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis. Schedule times to work hard, recharge, renew, play and engage with your family and friends.

Identify the “seasons” in your company’s workflow. During the slow time, it is okay to leave a little earlier each day if you know you are going to be working long hours once it is busy season. 28

Keep in mind your family’s “seasons” too. Of course, you cannot base everything on work schedules. You have to be ready to adjust to the season. You can take comfort in knowing there will be a period when you can apply more of yourself to the job.

Do not complain—positivity goes a long way. Do not feel guilty that you are not at home. Feeling guilty is a recipe for misery and poor performance on the job and unhappiness at home.

When you are at home, be at home. Throw yourself

into those precious family relationships. It is not about the amount of time spent with our families, but how engaged we are during the time we do have with them.

Weaknesses: The Coach sees process and organizational climate as ends in themselves. They fail to challenge/ contradict others. They do not recognize the importance of accomplishing tasks and do not emphasize long-range planning. They also overuse humor. Coaching: The Coach makes connections with people, but also connects them with the mission. They do not allow engagement to take precedence over performance.

The Visionary (head dominant) Strengths: The Visionary stays focused on goals while engaging in long-range thinking/planning. They have a bigpicture view and enjoy seeing new possibilities. They also scan the horizon for the next big opportunity. Weaknesses: The Visionary does not fully consider the effect of change. They may be less apt to focus on team members'

individual needs. They complain about lack of progress, but do not give sufficient attention to the process by which goals are met. Coaching: For the Visionary, it is vital that all people work to make the vision happen. They share your vision with others (heart) and lay out a path that incorporates visible milestones (hands).

The Executor (hands dominant) Strengths: The Executor excels at project planning. They accomplish tasks in a timely/efficient manner. They can be dependent upon and push team members to set a high performance standard. They freely share information/ materials so that others have the training tools and resources needed. Weaknesses: The Executor loses sight of the big picture, lacks patience with people and pushes for unrealistic performance standards. They also go into data overload providing too much detailed information. Coaching: The Executor engages people by making a compelling case for the change in order to have support. They also take time-outs periodically to evaluate goals and strategy. Q. I have diabetes. Why does my family doctor advise me to have my eyes checked at least yearly? A. Diabetes can have both temporary as well as permanent effects on the eyes. If the level of your blood sugars fluctuates significantly, sugar actually enters into the eye’s natural crystalline lenses and affects focusing. Your eyes will focus differently with a very high blood sugar as opposed to a low one, and this fluctuating vision will vary with the level of your sugars. More importantly, diabetes can have significantly longer-lasting effects on the eye. Individuals with diabetes are more prone to develop cataracts, probably because of these blood sugar fluctuations. Once diagnosed, cataracts can be successfully treated and vision can be restored so well with the newest generation of specialized implants that you might have excellent vision afterward without the burden of glasses! Once the cataracts are removed, fluctuate, blood sugars will not affect the focusing of your eyes. The other significant effect of diabetes is diabetic retinopathy. This condition shows up early as dilated retinal blood vessels (microaneurysms) and if left untreated can expand, break, cause retinal hemorrhages and ultimately loss of vision that is difficult to restore. If, however, these are diagnosed early through a yearly exam with an ophthalmologist, these small vessels can be treated and sealed off with laser treatments, thus helping to prevent future loss of vision.

Q. Is it possible to re-grow nerves? A. When I first studied neurology years ago, we were taught that when nerves were damaged nothing could be done to repair them. The best hope was symptomatic relief. Much has changed since that time, we now know that nerves have the potential to repair and regenerate. This new knowledge offers hope for patients suffering from different nerve conditions like neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica and stenosis. It is not easy, but recent research suggests that damaged nerves can be coaxed to sprout, grow rootlets and to a certain extent ultimately mature and reattach to their targets. What is truly exciting is the identification of chemicals produced by the body called nerve growth factors. These chemicals promote nerve repair. Even more exciting is the increasing number of studies that suggest that natural substances may enhance the production of these nerve growth factors with the prospect of restoration of proper nerve function in patients suffering from nerve pain. What research suggests is that these natural substances increase the levels of various nerve growth factors, which in turn promote there-growth of nerves. This starts a primitive form of nerve repair. It is possible using other tools, like laser acupuncture and high intensity ultrasound to advance the nerve repair process. Therefore, while the science of nerve restoration is in its infancy, it has progressed to a point of therapeutic application. Q. Do breast implants affect the risk or detection of breast cancer? A. Breast implants may interfere with early detection of breast cancer. This could mean that women with breast implants have a reduced cure rate with breast cancer. Over 2 million American women have breast implants. Women with breast implants have not been shown to have an increased risk of breast cancer and, according to the FDA, “There is no evidence at present that women with breast implants are at an increased risk.” Studies are still in progress and the results may not be known for many years to come. The presence of breast implants may interfere with mammography and early detection of breast cancer. Some doctors suggest that when the implant is placed under the muscle, the implant pushes the breast tissue forward and can make cancer detection easier. Mammograms may be more uncomfortable since they require squeezing the breast with pressure. The pressure of mammography may rupture an implant or cause implant deflation with saline implants. The American Cancer Society recommends that women ages 35 to 40 have a baseline mammogram. Between ages, 40 and 50, mammograms should be done every one to two years. Women over 50 should have a one every year. Mammograms should be done more frequently when there is a family history of breast cancer.

Q. When playing sports, is it necessary to wear mouth guards? What protection do mouth guards offer? A. It is great to see high school football teams back to practice and volleyball teams gearing up for the season. Have you thought about how you or your athlete will stay healthy and be able to play every game? There are several important things to know so that you can help keep your athlete’s teeth in healthy condition. First, if you have a future Peyton Manning or aspiring Kerri Walsh, then make an appointment today to get them a mouth guard. Q. Can I consider crossword puzzles and Sudoku a brain workout? A. Any activity that uses brainpower is good to do, especially if you enjoy it. Research has shown that participating in a variety of activities that use multiple cognitive skills can push our processing speed and accuracy at a faster rate than just doing the same activity repeatedly. Many experts believe that most puzzles do not change brain health because they exercise a limited skillset. Solving crossword puzzles does not address the root issue behind word retrieval (how well you have recorded the word in the first place). In addition, since crosswords and similar games, have no time limit, solvers can take as long as needed. The word retrieval they are practicing does not apply to real life. When you have a conversation, you need to come up with the words right away, not 10 minutes later. Therefore, it makes sense to find multiple activities that enable us to work on different parts of the brain or using multiple skills simultaneously. Several large studies have crosschecked cognitive health in adults against their everyday habits and activities. These studies found little correlation between doing crossword and Sudoku puzzles and better brain health.

Q. My child does not seem to be getting proper sleep. Can this be remedied? A. If your child sleeps in an abnormal position, snores, sweats heavily during sleep, is difficult to wake up, has headaches, is irritable, falls asleep or daydreams in school, wets the bed or has been diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), he could suffer from sleep-disordered breathing. In children, sometimes the problem results from swollen tonsils and/or adenoids that block the airway. It can also be caused by dental problems because malocclusion (misalignment) of the teeth are believed to affect the positioning of the airway. Even swollen nasal passages could cause your child problems breathing during sleep. In these cases, it is a good idea to talk to your child’s pediatrician, his dentist and an ear, nose and throat specialist. If your child is sleeping poorly and it isn’t due to a sleep-disordered breathing problem, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends a relaxing setting at bedtime—low lights and quiet. Do not substitute watching TV or videos for personal interaction with your child before bedtime.

This indicates your pain is not simply muscle strain/ sprain, but the nerve around neck and shoulder affected as well. Shoulder pain or discomfort that starts in the neck is often referred to as cervical spondylopathy. Cervical spondylopathy is a broad term and describes a degenerated change of the joints and cartilage (spinal disc) in the neck. Results of the degenerated change usually are tearing of the cartilage, formation of the bone spurs (osteophytes) and thickening of the joint ligaments. These changes can pinch the spinal nerves that extend out of the neck joint, causing a pain and numbness sensation that radiates to the shoulder, hand and mid to upper back. In cases where the shoulder is involved, patients may develop stiffness and limited motion of the shoulder. After ruling out the trauma, serious arthritic change and pathological disorder, some soft tissue therapies, based on the Meridian Theory, could be used in helping a frozen shoulder. To manage pain and discomfort, acupuncture is generally used in different types of cervical spondylopathy and shoulder pain. Not all children with learning difficulties have vision problems but 20 percent of all children have difficulty in learning because their visual system is not functioning properly. Many are misdiagnosed as having a learning disability or ADD. Many of the children with learning related visual difficulties pass vision screenings at school or at the pediatrician. Many of them actually see 20/20 but still have vision related issues. Eye charts test visual acuity; can you see it or not. Best functioning vision is much more than just having the ability to see 20/20. It involves how the eyes adjust focus from near to far or far too near and how well the eyes process what they are seeing. Individuals can sometimes have serious visual problems and yet still see 20/20. Some of the symptoms a child experiences can be: headache when reading, words slide together when reading, loses place when reading, and giving up easily when reading. If your child has any of these symptoms, schedule them to see an eye doctor.

Q. What is Kyphoplasty and am I a candidate?

A. Sometimes as we age our bones become thin, resulting in osteoporosis. When this happens, the vertebral bodies that make up the spinal column become fragile and weak. Compression fractures can result from this, causing increased pain and debilitation. In addition, these fractures create a forward curvature in your midback area that pushes you to lean forward, changing your center of gravity. There is a procedure available that can help correct this and almost instantly reduce the pain you’re experiencing if the compression fracture is new. Kyphoplasty is an innovative way to improve pain from the compression fracture and promotes restoration of the vertebral body. This is now available and can be done in the outpatient setting, if your physician feels you are a good candidate. Under X-ray guidance, the compression fractures are identified, and through a needle, a balloon is inflated and medical grade cement is placed. Once the cement has solidified, often the pain will be reduced and function/mobility is restored. This is a fairly low-risk procedure that can dramatically help improve your quality of life. In addition to treating osteoporotic compression fractures, it can be utilized for traumatic compression fractures. A physician knowledgeable in this area can discuss with you whether you are a good candidate for this procedure.

Q. How can I get a body makeover without diet, exercise or surgery for the holiday? A. For many aging adults, localized fat

layers can be very difficult to “work” off. Even with a regular exercise regimen and strict dietary factors, areas such as love handles, abdominal fat and back fat can be stubborn to contour. Surgical liposuction may not be an option for many people due to cost, down time or anesthesia.

Now, there is another option. CoolSculpting is a breakthrough, non-invasive procedure that uses cooling technology that noticeably eliminates fat without surgery. A. It is important to be sure someone who exhibits signs of depression does not have a physical reason. If a person has chronic pain or discomfort, they may have a chronic case of the blues as well. Addressing these concerns is a good place to start. Reviewing current medications is also a good idea as depression is a side effect of some medications. Proper nutrition is also key to a positive outlook. Eating well promotes feelings of wellbeing and ensures optimal health. Consider a home delivery program if preparing nutritious, healthy meals at home is an issue. An in-home caregiver can also help with shopping, preparing meals at home and provide transportation for outings. Encourage the pursuit of hobbies. Whether revisiting an old favorite pastime or discovering something new, finding enjoyable ways to pass the time will help prevent the depression that can come from boredom and isolation. There are numerous clubs and activities available at local senior centers and churches. It is also a great way to connect with others and form new friendships. The term carpal tunnel refers to a tunnel formed by bones of the wrist through which nerves and tendons pass as they travel from the forearm to the hand. Nerves that become “pinched” at the carpal tunnel can create numbness, tingling or burning pain in the hand. Unlike other tissues in the body, nerves do not have an external blood supply. Therefore, the blood vessels that are responsible for feeding the nerve itself are actually located within the nerve. This makes the nerve very vulnerable to both trauma and repetitive motion injuries. When the nerve becomes impinged, the blood supply that feeds the nerve also becomes “pinched off.” Without this blood, the nerve cell does not receive its supply of oxygen and glucose that are needed for the cell to create its own energy for healing. ith long workdays and fully booked nights, it is not a surprise that sometimes a solid eight hours of sleep is just not an option. According to the National Sleep Foundation’s 2012 “Sleep in America” poll, about one in 10 Americans say they are likely to fall asleep at an inappropriate time – like during a work meeting. With some positions, falling asleep is simply embarrassing or very dangerous. Here are a few tips to relieve fatigue and stay productive.

Get up and go Studies from the American Heart Association say that movement increases the flow of blood to the brain, which, in turn, helps you feel more alert. Incorporating more activity into your day can give you a mood boost, too. Exercising during the workday may make you feel more forgiving of your coworkers’ mistakes, more confident in your own abilities and increase work performance. Take a short walk outside the office, or inside if, the weather is not cooperating. Stand while talking on the telephone and take regular breaks for stretching.

Pack some protein

Let the light in

Protein stimulates orexin cells in the brain, which send electrical impulses that keep us alert and awake. A carbohydrate-rich snack, on the other hand, boosts blood sugar and then lowers it just as quickly. This can cause that drowsy, dragging feeling. Quick, work-friendly, high-protein bites include a cup of Greek yogurt, a handful of pumpkin seeds, or almonds.

Does your work environment feel more like a cave? Without any indicators of the time or weather conditions, fluorescentlighting and bleak surroundings, it is easy to feel sleepy. If you do not work in proximity to windows, studies have shown that having a live plant can be just as effective. A study recently conducted at WashingtonState University showed that having plants around a work area could greatly improve employees’ energy level. The results showed that workers with desk plants were 12 percent more productive and less stressed than those who worked in an environment without plants. Workers reaction time in the presence of plants was also 12 percent faster.

Give in to your caffeine craving The reliable favorite, caffeine, undoubtedly works to keep your eyes open. Experts consider 200 to 300 milligrams of caffeine per day a moderate amount. So to avoid jitters or insomnia later in the day, limit yourself to three eightounce cups of coffee. By comparison, according to the Mayo Clinic, black tea can have up to 61 milligrams per 8 ounces. Coffee and tea are a better choice than sugary and sodiumfilled energy drinks and sodas, but should still be sipped in moderation. 48

Monitor your hydration Water is important for your overall health and plays a part in energy levels. Dehydration can cause fatigue, so be sure to drink plenty of fluids. Physical: Some bullies engage in physical attacks, including

hitting, kicking, spitting, or other forms of physical confrontation. Destroying personal property also is considered physical bullying.

Indirect: Gossiping and spreading nasty rumors about a person is another form of bullying. This type of bullying may go hand-in hand with cyberbullying.

Signs your child is being bullied Parents can recognize certain signs that their child is being bullied at school. Bullied children frequently make excuses to avoid going to school. While the desire to stay home is something many children may express, those who are bullied may do so much more frequently. Bullied children tend to avoid certain places and may be sad, angry, withdrawn or depressed. They may have trouble sleeping or experience changes in appetite, and bullied youngsters’ academic performance may suffer. In addition, parents may notice that children return from school missing some of their belongings. 50

Signs your child is the bully Children who bully other kids have strong needs for power and negative dominance. They may find satisfaction in causing suffering to others. Some signs that your child may be a bully include: • Easily becoming violent with others • Having friends who bully others • Blaming others quickly • Comes home with belongings that do not belong to him or her • Getting in trouble with teachers or school administrators • Picking on siblings • Not accepting responsibility for actions There are ways parents can teach their children to act when faced with a bully. First, parents should explain that bullying is not the child’s fault and he or she does not deserve to be picked on. Next, parents can let children know that being assertive, but not violent with bullies may diffuse the situation, as some bullies thrive on the fear of their victims. If the bullying behavior continues, the student should speak to an adult or authority figure. Counseling could be necessary to determine what is compelling children to bully other students.

urrent trends show that top-notch schools and businesses are specifically looking for candidates with strong emotional skills. Yet, many children are not receiving basic, formal training in how to work through emotions and make good choices.

The ability to manage emotions (EQ) is proving to be more important to a child’s long-term happiness and success than academic ability (and IQ). However, because many parents did not formally learn ways to deal with emotion, they donot know how to help their children. Scientific studies prove that children, who know their emotional ABCs, i.e., basic emotional skills, get better grades, are happier and have better relationships with peers, teachers and parents. Here are three basic steps that can strengthen children’s emotional skills - simple, easy to remember and beneficial for children who have learning disabilities, such as autism or Asperger’s syndrome.

B: REWIND - “How did I get this feeling?” Once a child is more in control, they can think back about what actually happened and ask themselves, “Why am I feeling this way? What happened?”

C: PLAY - “What’s the best choice I can make, given the situation?” Now, children are able to sort through the options, choose the best available action that honors how they feel, appropriate to the situation and sensitive to the needs of others.

A: PAUSE AND BREATHE - “What am I feeling?”

These are three fundamental techniques used by mental health professionals. Unfortunately, very few schools teach them and few parents know them.

Pause and Breathe helps a child slow down and not take immediate action. When a child senses that he or she is upset, or in an emotionally stressful situation, every effort is made to stop. Take a deep breath. Take one more deep breath. The goal is that children learn to stop themselves

The most remarkable part is that so many people continue to blindly follow it — when what they really need to do is make an about-face and learn how to think about work and wealth in a whole new way. Anyone can make the leap to entrepreneurship, and financial freedom. You may have to learn new practical skills, but mostly it is a matter of changing your mindset.

Most people are far more likely to break agreements with themselves than with others. Today and every day consciously evaluate and reconsider what works for you as you strive toward a life of wealth and abundance. First, think critically about risk and reward, and determine how to effectively balance the two. This involves looking closely at your emotions, your willingness to take action, and your desire to move forward when an opportunity to build wealth arises. As you begin to experience greater rewards, you will confirm the beliefs and actions that create wealth.

There are bills to pay, problems to solve, and circumstances that need attention. You need to deal with these issues, but you cannot allow them to stop you. Every day, you must make time to move toward the life of your dreams, no matter how small that step is. If you are not taking steps to change your reality, you forfeit the right to complain about it. Invest in a financial education program to master the skills of being an entrepreneur. It stands to reason that if you want more out of life, you will need to seek some nontraditional education that will help you cultivate the skills that will enable you to generate multiple streams of income. Do not be afraid to pay for the expertise you need. Remain coachable. Entrepreneurs, by nature, are go-againstthe-grain types. It is easy for them to assume they know best and disregard good advice from those who have been there. Donot fall into this trap. Not only should you carefully consider advice, you should actively seek it out. Stop telling yourself to work harder and learn to work smarter. It is crucial to understand that the work of an entrepreneur is the work of the mind thinking, planning, creating, leading and providing oversight. If you want to reach the highest level possible, you have to leave tasks that can be accomplished by others to those with the knowledge and skills to do them. Always remember that time is more valuable than money. A true entrepreneur understands time is a precious commodity and must be used wisely and efficiently. You can and must devote time to creating wealth, planning and building business systems and leading your team. Once you have this foundation firmly in place, you’ll find you’re free of the obligation to work nine to five. Maintain a credit score of 760 or higher. As an entrepreneur, it is crucial for you to be able to borrow money whenever you need it –regardless of what the market is doing. Make it a priority to become a master at understanding, evaluating and controlling your credit score. No longer view debt as negative. It is not that debt itself is bad, it is that the way the average American uses it is destructive. Commit to using debt to invest and build wealth. Used wisely, debt can give you leverage and make you rich. No longer listen to people who are not where you want to be financially. The saying “Those who can not do, teach”

does not apply to building wealth. Seek advice only from those who are where you want to be financially. Be respectful of others’ opinions, but realize that you are on a different financial path from most people, and that they will not necessarily understand or approve. Fulfill the unmet needs of others. If your business does not address and fulfill an unmet need, it is not going to be successful. In today’s highly competitive world, it is critical to identify what others are not doing, or not willing to do, so that you can compete and win customers. Always be on time. Tardiness is a character issue. Not breaking agreements is a corner stone of all the Universal Laws of Being an Entrepreneur. When you are not on time, you are essentially breaking your word to yourself and the others in the meeting. Become a master at creating systems and processes. This means that you will need to understand the steps that lead to success, clearly define them and explain them to your team. Once you have done all this work up-front, you will no longer have to run day-to-day operations. Build the right relationships with the right power team members. You will need a strong team of the right people. Your power team is the power behind your skill as an entrepreneur. It is so important to be respectful and helpful to everyone you meet. You never know when you will be making a connection that can benefit you next week, next month, or next year. They may also refer customers your way. Some of these laws are deceptively simple, but it is their very simplicity that gives them their power. Most people take the path of least resistance. A

ngelina Jolie is admired as the famous Hollywood actress and philanthropist whose face is a symbol of beauty agreed unanimously.

People around the world were shocked to learn that Jolie opted to have a double mastectomy earlier this year to reduce her risk of breast cancer. Jolie, who was 37 years old at the time of the procedure, reportedly learned that she carries a mutation of the BRCA1 gene, which sharply increases her risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer, according to an op-ed piece she authored in the New York Times. In addition, the actress has a family history of cancer. Her mother, actress and producer Marcheline Bertrand, lost her battle to ovarian cancer in 2007 at the age of 56. According to the National Cancer Institute, BRCA stands for “breast cancer susceptibility genes,” a class of genes known as tumor suppressors. Mutations in these genes have been linked to hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. A person’s risk of developing breast and/or ovarian cancer is greatly increased if he or she inherits a harmful mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2. Mutations in these genes could also put a person at increased risk for other cancers. Genetic tests can check for mutations in BRCAgenes. During such a test, a blood sample is taken, and if a mutation is found, a person may get genetic counseling and work with a doctor to develop a plan of action. It is important to note that not all people with a genetic mutation will get breast cancer or ovarian cancer. The National Cancer Institute’s “SEER Cancer Statistic Review” states a woman who has inherited a harmful mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2 is about five times more likely to develop breast cancer than a woman who does not have such a mutation. Although there is not a surefire way to determine if a person with a mutated gene will develop breast cancer, many women who are considered high risk opt for a preventive mastectomy to reduce their risk.

“I choose not to keep my story private because there are many women who do not know that they might be living under the shadow of cancer,” Jolie writes in her New York Times op-ed. “It is my hope that they, too, will be able to get gene tested, and that if they have a high risk they, too, will know that they have strong options…” In Jolie’s sincere piece to New York Times op-ed, she acknowledged her gratitude toward her companion, Pitt and how this challenge has brought the couple closer. “I am fortunate to have a partner, Brad Pitt, who is so loving and supportive,” Jolie expresses. “So to anyone who has a wife or girlfriend going through this, know that you are a very important part of the transition. Brad was at the Pink Lotus Breast Center, where I was treated, for every minute of the surgeries. We managed to find moments to laugh together. We knew this was the right thing to do for our family and that it would bring us closer. Do You Have a Written Income Plan for Retirement?

ge 85 is a not the time to go broke. Personal savings, various investments and, yes, Social Security, may prove to be short of what you would expected. Budgeting how you spend money before retirement can often be a misleading measurement of how you will actually spend it during retirement. Spending 40 hours a week at work not only earns you a paycheck, it also keeps you from spending money on more vacations, matinee screenings at the movie theater, extra trips to the mall or shopping online. You need to be exceedingly realistic in your planning. The five years before retirement are actually the most crucial in solidifying postemployment stability. To prevent a rude awakening during retirement, start with a written income plan (WIP). Here are the benefits and importance of this living document.

A comprehensive list of life expenses paints a clearer picture: For a 65-year-old married couple today,

there is a 72 percent chance that at least one spouse will live to age 85 and a 45 percent chance that one will live to age 90. There is also an 18 percent chance that one will reach age 95, according to a recent study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, national center for health statistics. As the baby boom generation ages, Social Security benefits may decrease – and the age at which an individual can collect benefits may increase. Changes in employment may affect retirement plans. Osteoarthritis Risk Factors, Symptoms & Treatments

W

hile there are many benefits to getting older, few people associate the aging process with all the good things that occur as a person approaches their golden years. Instead, aging is more often associated with aches and pains than grandkids and trips around the world. Though such associations are unfortunate, they are rooted in the reality that aging often comes with a few ailments. One such ailment many older adults deal with is osteoarthritis, which, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, affects over 12 million men and women over the age of 65 in the United States alone. In Canada, one in 10 adults have osteoarthritis, proving this most common form of disease does not discriminate based on geography. As prevalent as osteoarthritis might be, the millions of adults currently living with the condition are proof that it does not have to ruin a person’s golden years. In fact, learning about osteoarthritis, its risk factors and prospective treatment options can help those adults currently living with the condition or those concerned about developing it down the road. 62

What is osteoarthritis? Osteoarthritis, or OA, is also referred to as degenerative joint disease. OA occurs when cartilage begins to wear away. Cartilage is an essential part of each joint, helping to absorb shock and enabling the joint to move smoothly. OA most often occurs in the body’s weight-bearing joints, which include the hips, knees and spine. When a person has OA, the cartilage in a joint stiffens and loses it elasticity, which makes it more susceptible to damage. Joints will be stiff in the morning, a stiffness that can last roughly 15 to 20 minutes. As the day progresses and the joints are used more, the pain can intensify and swelling can occur. This is typically because, as the joint’s cartilage continues to deteriorate, the tendons and ligaments are stretching and causing pain.

Are there symptoms of OA? There are symptoms of OA, but these can vary greatly. Some people experience few symptoms of OA even if X-rays


indicate their joints have undergone significant degeneration. In addition, the pain associated with OA is not necessarily constant. Some people can go years without experiencing any OA-related pain. Such instances are most common among people with OA of the hands and knees. Those who do exhibit symptoms of OA can do so in a variety of ways. Adults with progressive cartilage degeneration in their knee joints might become bowlegged or develop a limp, which will worsen as the cartilage continues to degenerate. OA of the spine often causes pain in the neck or lower back. Severe pain can be caused by bone spurs that form along the spine, and numbness and tingling of affected body parts can result as well. Adults with OA of the hands can also exhibit symptoms, which are usually bony deformities along the joints of the fingers. Heberden’s node is a bony enlargement at the small joint of the finger that occurs because of bone spurs resulting from OA in that joint. A bony knob that occurs at the middle joint of the finger, known as Bouchard’s node, is also quite common among adults with OA of the hands. While none of these nodes is especially painful, they are associated with limited motion of the affected joint. Patients with OA at the base of the big toes might notice the formation of a bunion, something that researchers suggest is possibly genetic, as it can be found in numerous female members of certain families. The Arthritis Society notes that, early on, adults with OA will find their symptoms are typically only triggered by high impact activities. However, eventually the pain can be triggered by daily activities and not subside except with adequate rest. Some people even feel pain for most of the day, including when they are attempting to fall asleep at night.

Can OA be treated? OA can be treated, but adults must recognize that it can not be cured. As mentioned above, some symptoms can disappear for years at a time, but they will return. Treatment, if ceased, must then continue.

OA is most common among people who are overweight. One of the most effective ways to reduce pain from OA is to lose weight and get regular exercise. This takes pressure off joints that are being heavily taxed. Though exercising when pain from OA is significant might seem counterintuitive, exercise is actually great for the joints. Each person is different, so consult a physician before beginning a new exercise regimen. However, do not shy away from aerobic exercises, including walking, swimming and riding a bicycle, or strength-training exercises like weightlifting. These exercises make the muscles stronger and more capable of supporting the joints. As with any exercise routine, do not forget to stretch. Another treatment option for joints hurting because of OA is the application of a heating pad or a cold pack. Cold and heat can be applied several times per day (always cover the skin with a towel prior to application to avoid skin damage). Those nursing an injury should only apply cold for the first few days. Medications are another treatment option for OA.
