The Newest in Injectables...ENERGY!

ThermiTight Injectable RF

ThermiTight is the first aesthetic procedure, which delivers controlled thermal energy under the skin to reverse the effects of aging. This is considered a “micro-invasive” procedure and is ideal for patients who want more results than non-invasive procedures can deliver and DO NOT want surgery. We added the ThermiTight procedure to the practice specifically to address the “tweener” patient who may not benefit from our existing non-invasive technology and is not ready or does not want surgery. The device uses a small probe that enters at a small insertion point in the skin, which then delivers Radio Frequency directly to the skin and subcutaneous fat within energy levels that are not tolerated externally. The additional benefit to ThermiTight along with skin tightening is its ability to melt fat, thus truly decreasing the bulk or heaviness under the chin and jowl area that contributes to the aged look. Because the area is anesthetized, there is no pain during the procedure and there is little to no social downtime associated with this treatment. There may be some swelling or bruising so we do suggest 24-48 hours of low activity, but no pain. Also very exciting, ThermiTight may be used in other areas such as the pre-axillary (armpit) fat pad, stomach, knees, thighs, bra fat and arms (bat wings)! Pricing is $1800-$4000 depending on the area and severity of issues. Usually only one treatment required. See our website for introductory Specials and call for a free consultation.

For an inspiring reminder, here is a poem that was

In any case, their association with Mother Teresa and

Can you DIG IT?

DIG IT Urban Garden opens in Phoenix Last month, DIG IT Urban Gardens and Nursery opened its doors in the heart of downtown Phoenix. The goal of DIG IT is to provide the Phoenix area with locally sourced plants and organic gardening supplies. The 22,000 square foot space will also serve as a community hub for artists, foodies, gardeners and more. Offering unique cactus and succulents, a variety of plants and a full line of vegetable garden starts and fruit trees, the locally sourced company grows as much plant material as possible at their five-acre farm in south Phoenix. With a mission to support and partner with other local businesses, DIG IT is a centrally located neighborhood hangout and will host gardening seminars, art and food events, and more. Founded by two Arizona natives, Tim Bishop and Ryan Jerrell, entrepreneurs passionate about plants and giving back to the community, DIG IT is the first of its kind in Phoenix. The unique concept offers high quality products and a plant-savvy staff so every visitor receives top-notch customer service along with quality, diversity, and consistency in luxury plant material.

“With our combined passion and love for plants, we had a vision to create a business to promote green, healthy living,” says Tim Bishop, DIG IT co-owner. “We want to share our knowledge with others so they can achieve their garden goals at home and create a space where people want to shop [and] hang out while supporting a variety of local businesses.” Keeping true to their community vibe, DIG IT broke ground this past August after raising $150,000 with GoFundMe.com. A need in the community after the closing of Baker’s Nursery, DIG IT is determined to fill the local landmark’s very large shoes. “With the closing of Baker’s Nursery, we are thrilled that this new nursery is coming to fill the void for gardeners across the Phoenix Metro area,” says Ryan Jerrell, DIG IT co-owner. “We hope that this space inspires a new generation of plant-lovers.” Jerrell adds that DIG IT’s inventory consists of about 90 percent of local vendors and many employees on the small staff used to work for Baker’s Nursery. Backed by the founders’ 30 years of combined experience, DIG IT will be an epicenter of knowledge and innovations. The inspiring environment will show customers how to use plants in ways that they have not considered before.

New Litter of Asian SmallClawed Otters at Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park By Dr. Grey Stafford

Check out the new litter of Asian small-clawed otters at the Wildlife World Aquarium. The smallest variety of otter, these animals only grow to about 8-12 lbs. They are unusual, as their claws do not grow past the end of their toes. This adaptation gives them the ability and dexterity to feel around shallow fresh and brackish water habitats in search of small animals, shrimp and fish for food. Almost as comfortable on land as in the water, their feet have far less webbing than other, more aquatic, species of otters. The Honey Foundation Making the world a better place through random acts of kindness

Founded by Valley residents Justin and Jaime Clarke, The Honey Foundation encourages random acts of kindness to help make the world a better place one act at a time. Justin Clarke explains how the idea behind the nonprofit started: “Every Mother’s Day, my twin brother Scott would give the cashier at Starbuck’s cash and roses, asking the clerk to please use the cash to pay for every mother’s coffee—including a rose—until his money ran out. He didn’t ask for recognition or repayment of any type. His only wish was that the receivers would soon pay it forward, too. On Mother’s Day 2011, our mother went to Starbuck’s to buy a coffee. After ordering, she found that someone else had already paid for her coffee, and then received a rose. While waiting on her drink, our mother asked, ‘Who on Earth could have done such a kind deed?’ The answer: her own son, Scott Thomas Clarke.” Sadly, June 3, 2011, Scott passed away at age 29. “During the eulogy at Scott’s funeral, I was able to share his amazing story about kindness and giving back to local women on Mother’s Day,” Justin says. “Surprisingly, his

story inspired more kindness as a group of his friends collected hundreds of dollars to pay it forward on Father’s Day, in Scott’s honor, at the same Starbucks that Scott did a month earlier.” To help with the grieving process, Justin and Jaime also paid forward random acts of kindness in Scott’s honor “We felt that there should be a place for individuals who want to share their kindness in the community,” Justin says. “A special place to pay it forward and inspire others. An idea was born, and we started designing the world’s very first Pay It Forward Tracking Software. So, a new charitable organization, The Honey Foundation, was born.” According to the Honey Foundation website, here’s how it works: participants sign up for a Honeybee ID when they join the foundation, they act kindly toward a stranger, then give the stranger their Honeybee ID on a sticker, card or pen, and ask them to pay it forward to another person and register the kind act online. This provides a domino effect of kind acts that can be tracked. To participate is free but the foundation does accept donations for supplies, scholarships for participants, education programs and more.

“Since 2012, The Honey Foundation has provided more than $50,000 in direct support to other charitable organizations, including the Phoenix Children’s Hospital, the American Cancer Society, and other communitybased organizations,” Jaime says. “Recently, the organization has enhanced its educational programs and continued to participate in several community-based events.”

The foundation is on the look out to add more schools to its roster for the program. In addition, 2016 is shaping up to be a big year as The Honey Foundation plans to hire a new executive director, new members to its board, enhance its kindness education programs, and update the Honey Foundation website and marketing materials.

This year, the foundation launched The Honey Foundation Kindness Challenge, an educational program being offered at two West Valley schools. “The Honey Foundation’s Kindness program was developed to teach students the importance of performing acts of kindness along with basic life skills, such as positive self-esteem, confidence, effective communication, positive thinking, leadership, philanthropy and community,” Jaime explains. “Results thus far indicate that the program has increased the sense of safety and security at the schools, as well as improved student participation, confidence, leadership and positive relationships.”

How to Lower Blood Sugar Levels Without Medication Diabetes is a disorder in which the body cannot properly store and use the energy found in food. To be more specific, diabetes compromises the body's ability to use glucose. According to MediLexicon International, type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body wrongly identifies and then attacks pancreatic cells, which causes little to no insulin production. Those with type 1 diabetes usually must rely on insulin shots to remain healthy. Type 2 diabetes involves insulin resistance or insufficient insulin production and is the more common form of diabetes. The pancreas may still produce insulin, but not enough to meet the demands of the body. Insulin resistance occurs in some cases because a consistent high blood-glucose level causes cells to be overexposed to insulin and then makes cells less responsive or immune to its effects. Diabetes treatment can include a combination of strategies, including the following nondrug remedies.

Diet Diabetics can work with their doctors and nutritionists to come up with a diet that will be most effective. Some advocate for eating foods that are low in carbohydrates or ones with a low glycemic index. Others say that it is more important to restrict caloric intake rather than sugar intake. Work with a professional to create a healthy diet and follow it as closely as possible. Eat meals at the same time each day so you can better regulate blood-sugar spikes and lulls. Skipping meals may cause you to overeat later in the day, which can throw glucose levels off-kilter.

Exercise Many people with type 2 diabetes are carrying around extra weight. Exercise can help them shed pounds and maintain healthier weights. But exercise does more than just help you lose weight. The Joslin Diabetes Center says strength-training exercises are an important component of workouts. By maintaining lean muscle mass, you can get rid of a larger amount of glucose in the bloodstream, thus helping manage diabetes in the 26 November 2015| azhealthandliving.com

process. Get at least 20 to 30 minutes of moderate activity several days per week.

Supplementation Some people find that certain natural ingredients can help regulate blood-sugar levels. For example, pure, organic apple cider vinegar taken over time can help people with diabetes manage their blood-sugar levels more effectively. A small amount of cinnamon per day may be able to reduce fasting glucose levels by anywhere from 18 to 29 percent, according to a study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. Always speak with a doctor before trying any home remedies to treat diabetes or exploring any alternatives to traditional diabetes treatments.

COPD & Lung Cancer

Smoking is a big contributor to both lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer can have a substantial impact on a person's health, affecting how well the body is able to process oxygen. Both can be a serious side effect of smoking, but is there a relationship between cancer and COPD? Various experts, including the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute in collaboration with the Division of Cancer Prevention of the National Cancer Institute, have weighed in on the link between COPD and lung cancer. COPD appears to be a strong risk factor for lung cancer, even among people who have never smoked. The Cancer Prevention and Treatment Fund organization notes that more than half of all people with lung cancer also have COPD. Very often, the symptoms of both conditions mesh. A person may discover he or she has COPD and then lung cancer, or vice versa. Patients with either lung cancer or COPD often experience coughing and shortness of breath. They also may experience repeated episodes of pneumonia or bronchitis. But cancer may have its own distinct symptoms, such as hoarseness, blood in sputum, weight loss and lack of appetite. Lung cancer and COPD both can be fatal conditions when detected too late. Although COPD cannot be reversed, there are lifestyle changes and medications that can make breathing easier. Quitting smoking can prevent more serious consequences down the line, and many people with early stage cancers can be cured. As with many types of cancers, the stage of the cancer at diagnosis heavily influences prognosis. People can take steps to stay on top of their pulmonary health. Quitting smoking and avoiding secondhand smoke is one of the most important things people can do. Recurring symptoms of coughing, shortness of breath or fatigue should be brought to the attention of your doctor. If COPD is diagnosed, recognize that lung cancer may not be far behind. azhealthandliving.com |November 2015

MIND, BODY & SPIRIT By Dr. Robert J. Cerfolio, world-renowned cardiothoracic surgeon and author of Super Performing at Work and at Home: The Athleticism of Surgery and Life

Tips for Improving Your Lines of Gratification It’s never too early to think about self-improvement for the New Year … and this year. Habitual procrastination can really hurt you in the long run because waiting to take care of something that’s obviously important to you – health, money, family matters – weighs on your subconscious. Understanding one’s personal “line of gratification” is the foundation for sticking to self-improvement goals. There are many kinds of lines of gratification. For some, they’re the number of zeros in their bank statement; for others, the curves of their muscles after they leave the gym. It’s good and healthy to look back on your hard work and admire what you have accomplished before moving on to the next task. Here are a few tips on how to make those lines of gratification more impressive.

Be an early riser. The main reason operating rooms hum into action at 7 a.m. is tied to human physiology; the bodies of patients are better able to handle the stress of surgery at that time. People are generally better off getting work done early in the day when we’re better prepared for stress and performance. And getting a job done early frees you up later in the day.

Love what you do. Why wouldn’t you want to take ownership, responsibility, and pride in what you do for a living? When you treat a job as only a means to a paycheck, you are missing the point. If your job isn’t the one you’d really love to have, don’t make it worse with a negative attitude. Instead, make it your own. Make it a point of personal integrity and principle to challenge yourself to achieve something every day. After all, 40 hours a week is a long time to stay anywhere. Ask yourself: Did I really try my best? “I tried my best” is a common refrain from those who haven’t reached their goals. An honest response you can ask yourself is, “Am I sure?” This question is not about being overly critical. It’s simply about realizing that, if you had practiced or studied an extra 10 minutes each day, you would’ve been that much closer to your goals. 28 November 2015| azhealthandliving.com

Set specific, measurable goals. Results define goals. Every individual should have clear goals that are objective and measurable. Goals such as “to be happy,” “to do well at work” or “to get along” are too nebulous. To be successful, you have to be able to define your goals by measurable results. Find the high ground. In anything you do, aspire to live up to the noblest, highest aspect of your job. Certain jobs – such as police work, firefighting, teaching, or working in health care – are service oriented, so it’s easier to feel good about your contributions. Look for the contributions you’re making in your job and take pride in what you’re doing to make the world a little better. Be the go-to guy or girl. This takes time, practice and the confidence necessary to want the ball in a critical situation. Being the go-to guy or girl means being willing to take responsibility and risk failing. A go-to person is also willing to speak up about problems or changes necessary in a business or organization, and suggest solutions.

How to Help Our Brothers & Sisters In Need By Lumbie Mlambo, editor of Equanimity Magazine

In the United States, about 46.5 million people live in poverty, according to the Brookings Institution. Worldwide, the number of impoverished people is about 1.6 billion, according to a study by Oxford economists. There is so much need out there and that’s why it’s important that all of us do whatever we can to help the underprivileged. Who knows? You may someday wear their shoes. It’s like your health; nothing is guaranteed. The truth is that regardless of whether a nation is industrialized or not, the needy are everywhere. Many people require aid and support around the world and, most likely, in your community. A variety of private and public agencies try to help, but their resources are limited and they can’t provide for every community in need of assistance or basic necessities. This leaves a large segment of low-income population with unmet needs, which is why it’s so important for everyone to do what they can to help the needy. Tips for how you can get started helping our brothers and sisters in need.

One person’s trash … Next time you’re taking time to clear some room in your closet or garage, remember that, though you may be finished with an item, someone else may need it. Those old pajamas and t-shirts that you’re fond of tossing in the trash can be turned into cloth rags for cleaning at home, or for other organizations to help underprivileged earn a subsistence income through using them for cloth crafting. Items such as loose leaf pages of paper, construction paper, crayons (broken and whole), markers, pens and pencils are perfectly useful, especially for poor children going back to school.

Help others on date night. Lavish dresses, spotless tuxedos, and expensive dishes are not only for fancy people. You, too, can attend a luxurious gala event to benefit charity. While this kind of event may be attended by affluent

community leaders and well-to-do folks, who may enjoy gratuitous backslapping, the more important consideration is who benefits. Various good causes may be small businesses and historic sites in your town; better causes, however, often go toward organizations that benefit struggling families, disadvantaged children and homeless people. This will likely be more expensive than your typical date night, but most are doable for middle-class couples.

Donate your professional skills. Among the great charitable organizations are programs supporting Guardians ad Litem, or GALs. A GAL is a person the court appoints to represent the best interests of a child in a divorce or parental rights and responsibilities case. The GAL will investigate the family situation and advise the court about where a child should live and what type of contact parents should have with their children. A professional with backgrounds including the law or journalism may be great for such work, but there are many other worthy causes if this doesn’t fit what you’re good at. A chef may help prepare tasty meals on Thanksgiving, or a salon worker may help make young girls with cancer feel pretty. Most professions can apply their expertise in the service of others. azhealthandliving.com | November 2015

MIND, BODY & spirIT By Linda Mornell, an adolescent therapist and author of Forever Changed: How Summer Programs and Insight Mentoring Challenge Adolescents and Transform Lives

Behaviors that Help Teens Learn to Bounce Back It’s no secret that adolescence is a time of high stress for many teens. Although some young people navigate these difficult years with reasonable aplomb, many struggle and are unable to cope as they run into troubles in school, at home or in their neighborhoods. That’s where adults can step in and aid them in cultivating the mental tools they need to bounce back from life’s most trying moments. It’s our job as parents and educators to help our young people develop the flexibility and resiliency to withstand the challenges they face on their path to adulthood. Encouraging the following five behaviors can help teens learn to bounce back rather than fold under the stresses of the adolescent years.

Reach out rather than retreat. Recent research tells us

that the adolescent brain is flexible and highly sensitive to stress. Many teens withdraw into themselves when they are stressed, rather than reaching out to others. When they do that, they miss out on learning different ways of handling and relieving those stresses, as well as diffusing intense feeling in more positive ways. As parents try to address this, they need to understand that adolescents routinely say the opposite of what they feel. “‘Go away’ often means ‘please stay.’ Parents should not leave but sit down and wait.

Tell their story. The ability to put their story into coherent words gives teens the chance to see it from a distance and gain perspective. They also can compare their story to the stories of others, and that creates a sense of community. Parents should avoid interrupting and be willing to listen when an adolescent feels like talking.

Separate from home and parents. For adolescents to

gain autonomy and confidence, it’s essential that they sometimes separate themselves physically and psychologically from their parents. That’s becoming harder and harder to do in today’s world where cell phones give people instant and constant communication. For teenagers, this over communication reinforces the idea that the world is a challenging and even dangerous place, and that they aren’t capable of learning to handle those challenges and dangers on their own. Parents should avoid constant texting and connection, and give their teens room to make their own decisions. 30 November 2015| azhealthandliving.com

Engage in exploration and positive risk-taking. It’s

hard for teens to learn how to bounce back from challenges if they’ve been protected from encountering any significant difficulties to bounce back from. Parents should encourage teens to reach out of their familiar and safe comfort zones and take positive risks like meeting new people, exploring different activities, and participating in scary sounding summer opportunities like wilderness expeditions.

Take responsibility for others. Caretaking is one of

the best ways to increase resiliency, whether you are babysitting, volunteering in a home for elders, or standing up for kids who are bullied. When teens lend a hand to help others, they experience and support eternal values and enhance the sense of their own worth. Parents should spend time talking with teens about their family values for helping others.

Tips for Avoiding Road Rage Often it’s frightening. Sometimes it’s deadly. Road rage – where flaring tempers mix with two-ton machines – continues to be a problem on America’s highways, leading to accidents, assaults and occasionally even murder. It’s a perplexing problem in part because it can happen at anytime and anywhere that roads and vehicles are involved, yet specific statistics on its frequency are hard to come by. All that aside, though, there are solutions that can at least reduce the number of road-rage incidents. People who are easily angered by slower drivers, detours and other traffic disruptions can be taught to be more aware of their responses and modify them to reduce accident risks, according to research published this year by the Society for Risk Analysis. Sometimes there’s this tendency to throw on the brakes when someone is tailgating us, or use an obscene gesture at an aggressive driver. But when you encounter an aggressive driver, you don’t want to engage them or do anything to further agitate them. What are some of our behaviors that can aggravate other drivers? The No. 1 culprit is drivers who are texting, according to a 2015 Road Rage Report by Expedia.com, the travel site. Those texting drivers upset 26 percent of us. Other offenders, in descending order, are tailgaters, leftlane hogs, slow drivers and drivers multitasking. Of course, those examples represent situations that can raise your ire after you are behind the wheel. Often, the foundation for fury on the highway was laid before you got into the car. Maybe you had an argument with someone earlier. Maybe you are stressed because you are running late for an appointment. Probably all of us at some time have been angry and someone wisely told us to take a deep breath. That’s actually good advice because breathing and taking in oxygen plays an important role in every area of our health and well-being. Here are some tips for heading off your own road rage or avoiding the rage of others: 32 November 2015| azhealthandliving.com

Don’t turn that ignition. If you are feeling stressed and anxious before you even start your trip, then the time to calm down is now, not after you are on the highway. Get a grip before you start the car. Take that deep breath you always heard would work. You might even try counting from one to 10, inhaling on one, exhaling on two, up to 10 and back to one again. You want to be relaxed before you head out.

Stop right there. If you are already driving, and you feel

your anger is starting to impact your judgment, pull over for a few moments. Breathe and ask yourself, is my problem important enough to risk lives? Taking a few conscious breaths could prevent a catastrophe.

Don’t react or retaliate. You can’t control those other

drivers, but you can control how you react to them. If someone is tailgating you, flipped you off or is just infuriating you with bad driving habits, ignore them. Engaging in some sort of road-rage argument will just further raise your blood pressure, and could prove dangerous in some circumstances. This is just one more opportunity to take that deep breath, he says.

Q. What are the steps in treating varicose veins with endovenous laser therapy?

A. The knee because it is a major weight bearing joint and the shoulder joint due to its range of motion are subject to chronic pain. Not surprisingly, pain in these joints is a leading cause of doctor's visits. Traditional care for shoulder and knee problems involves medications, injections, physical therapy and surgery. Unfortunately, these approaches often prove inadequate and many patients have chronic shoulder or knee pain. It is not uncommon for us to treat patients who have pain even after multiple surgeries.

A. EVLT, or endovenous laser therapy, is a

A. In the United States, we are in the middle of a diabetic epidemic that is showing no signs of slowing down. People with diabetes are at higher risk for certain eye diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy, cataracts and others. Diabetes is a disease of the capillaries. The only way an optometrist can see the blood vessels in your eyes without cutting them open is by dilating and looking in the back of your eyes. If you are a diabetic, getting this yearly eye exam is of the most importance, because early diagnosis of retinal disease can prevent significant vision loss. In fact, the eyes are one of the first places where diabetes manifests. Dot blot hemorrhages, neovascularization, fibrosis, tractional retinal detachment, and many other vascular changes can show up without any symptoms. Only through a thorough retinal examination can a proper diagnosis can be made. The information contained in this article is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, care or treatment. Always consult your physician or other qualified health care provider with any questions regarding any possible medical condition.

New research suggests that chronic shoulder or knee pain may be the result of scar tissue formation that occurs after injury or even after injections and surgery. See once soft tissue, like muscles or tendon is injured it heals with scar formation. If you look at scar tissue under a microscope. It looks like straw in a stable. A very haphazard pattern. Scientists call this disorganized scar tissue. It appears that better healing occurs in the knee or shoulder joint when scar tissue is more "organized." A relatively new technique called instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization is believed to promote scar organization and thus relieve pain even in old knee or shoulder problems. It involves precision tools designed especially to promote organization of scar tissue and thus pain relief and healing. After using this technique, we often apply laser therapy to the knee and shoulder, to further promote proper healing. Many of our knee and shoulder pain patients are reporting remarkable results with this new treatment combination.

minimally invasive treatment option to eliminate varicose veins and the symptoms they cause. The EVLT procedure uses laser light to quickly and safely achieve the outcome you want for improved confidence in your appearance and greater everyday comfort. Prior to your EVLT procedure, the area to be treated will be disinfected and local anesthetic applied to ensure comfort during treatment. A small, hollow needle will be placed into the vein requiring treatment and a laser probe threaded into the vein through the needle. Your vein doctor will guide the probe via ultrasound to the area where treatment will be most effective. The laser is fired, delivering directed energy to the walls of the problematic vein. This energy will cause the vein to shrink and prevent further blood flow through this area. As a result, blood will be diverted into other veins. Once treatment has been completed, the probe and the needle are removed and a dressing applied to the wound. Compression bandages will be applied to the area to help circulation while you heal. The common symptoms of varicose veins include the following: Aching legs, Swollen ankles, Spider veins Swollen / twisted veins, Venous eczema, Restless leg syndrome, Ropey / bulging veins, Heavy legs and Leg cramps.

Q. What are some chiropractic noninvasive treatment options for low back pain? A. Low back pain is one of the most common

reasons for missed work in America today. One-half of all working Americans admit to having experienced back pain each year. In fact, back pain is the second most common reason for doctor’s visits, out numbered only by respiratory infections. Experts estimate that approximately 80 percent of the population will experience back pain at some time in their lives. Back pain is such an epidemic the money spent specifically to fight that problem totals over $50 billion a year and that number only considers the more easily identifiable costs. If that isn’t bad enough low back pain has been identified as the leading cause of disability worldwide according to the Global Burden of Disease report of 2010. The good news is that most low back pain has been found to be mechanical or nonorganic. This means that the majority of low back pain is not being caused by more serious conditions such as bone diseases or cancer and can be treated safely and effectively on a more non invasive level. According to the Journal of American Medicine article published in 2013 for patient information Chiropractic care was suggested as an option for treatment. The article went on to state low back surgery is often not needed and should only be considered when all other therapies fail. Chiropractic treatment offers several non invasive treatment options for low back pain. The first step in any care regiment is to be evaluated for proper treatment. Options may include spinal adjustments, muscle pain reduction therapy, therapeutic decompression and more. None of these procedures are invasive but tend to be very effective in fighting the war on low back pain. – Dr. Foust Kukurin Chiropractic, Acupuncture & Nutrition Network 623.547.4727

Q. How does diabetic eye disease affect Q. My elderly mother and father don’t sleep well. Could I also be at risk? vision? A. Diabetic eye disease is the leading cause A. The research on this topic is rather scarce, of blindness among working-age Americans. Diabetes-related eye disease can cause numerous symptoms, including fluctuating vision, floaters, development of a blind spot in your field of view, blurry vision, double vision and cataracts. The most damaging is diabetic retinopathy in which damage is caused to the retina that can include retinal swelling and leakage of blood and fluids from the blood vessels to the surrounding retina. When light enters the eye, it focuses on the retina, and that information is passed along the optic nerve to the brain where visual processing takes place. It the retina is damaged, as in diabetic retinopathy, then blind spots develop in the field of vision that correlate to the part of the retina that is damaged. It is imperative that those with diabetes have an eye exam at least once a year. If diabetic eye disease is present, it is common to have examinations several times a year. While diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of vision loss in America, many cases could be prevented with routine eye exams and appropriate treatment. Treatment may include injections into the eye or laser treatment to the affected areas of the retina. Above all, early diagnosis is crucial to long-term vision prognosis.

although an interesting study was done in Sweden in the mid-1990s. The results, published in the Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics, were significant. Further, these problems were more common in respondents whose parents both had difficulty sleeping. Immediate relatives of patients with narcolepsy, hypersomnia, and insomnia have been found to have a higher frequency of these disorders as well. In other related research, no differences in lifestyle or sleeping conditions could be found in elderly patients who complained of sleep problems. This led the researchers of the Sweden study to suggest that heredity factors may be the answer. While we always have to take into account that surveys such as this one are not without fault (one has to allow for human error), the results of this research are intriguing.

support the hip joint are impinged and wornout, which is a predisposal to osteoarthritis. Patients may experience pain during movement. Should their daily activities be limited when they develop pain? The answers are different all base on individual case.

When we walk, our hips generate a “pumping motion” as we step forward and back. Research and human cadaver dissection show this pumping motion is the greatest when our heel is off ground during a normal walk. The hip joints receive nutrition and lubrication through the pumping motion. Here, movement plays a significant role as a lotion and is a wonderful gift. As we are age or in a sedentary lifestyle, the muscle and capsule surrounding the hip joint become immobilized and gradually start to degenerate, as we stay the long-term immobilized state and the hip start losing flexibility due to over contraction and imbalance of the muscles around. Hip joint is not able to generate a great pumping motion for lubrication in a timely manner during walking. Instead, over contracted muscles start pulling the hip bone up and increase compression and pressure as we move forward, when these accumulate and the joint cartilage starts wearing out over a period of time our body starts compensating by generating bone spurs (a sign of osteoarthritis) in the hip and pinch the nerve and tissue around. As a protective mechanism for stability, your spine is tilting and the back muscles are tight. Hip pain and low back pain come together. As well as maintaining an active lifestyle, the good news is there are treatment options that are good complements for conventional management and prevention of osteoarthritis. Gentle spinal manipulation and acupuncture combined together with specific stretching of the hip muscles are used to manage pain and build up pumping motion of the joint.

injection of concentrated mixture of the patient's own blood. PRP injections have been shown to relieve acute and chronic pain and accelerate healing of injured tissues and joints. It is used for various conditions including tennis elbow, rotator cuff injuries, hip and knee arthritis, low back injuries and almost every area that has some “wearing and tearing” or acute injury type problem. The limited blood supply and poor healing properties of ligaments, cartilage, and tendons make treatment necessary after injury. Many different options for treatment of pain provide more of a “Band-Aid affect” and sometimes can accelerate degeneration. Using platelets we're able to do just the opposite and accelerate healing thereby eliminating the cause of the pain.

The process is done by collecting platelets by a small sample of the patient's blood and placing it into a special centrifuge machine. A portion of the plasma is then removed and the patient's concentrated platelets are mixed with the remaining plasma to form a concentrated solution. This platelet Rich's solution has been injected into and around the injured tissues. An amazing thing happens when the PRP is injected. The growth factors from the platelets “talk” to other important cells including stem cells and tell them to come over and heal the area. The injection is usually done with some sort of guidance including ultrasound guidance and or fluoroscopic guidance and typically, only one or two injections are needed.

There are many different brands and some brands are better than others depending on the type of hearing loss you have. It is important to go to a doctor of Audiology who works with many hearing aid manufacturers and not just one. If a business only works with one manufacturer, they are usually obligated to sell only that product, which is not in best interest of the patient.

A. As we age there are many significant changes in facial volume both, anatomically and aesthetically. We begin to notice these changes in our early to mid-thirties. Fat pads that once provided facial volume begin to migrate downward and reduce in size, resulting in heaviness to the lower face and a flattened upper face. Aesthetically, these appear as bags or hollowed dark circles under the eyes, creases, or folds from the nose to Some hearing centers are partially funded by the corners of the mouth, jowls at the jaw a single hearing aid manufacturer, while others line and a downward turn or frown to the are committed to national buying affiliates. corners of the mouth. Q. My one-month-old baby has a flat

head. Can osteopathic manipulative medicine help my baby?

A. Most parents are aware of sudden infant death (SIDS), and are vigilant about making sure that babies always sleep on their backs. Infants spend countless hours lying on their soft, developing skulls, and that can flatten or misshape their heads. The condition, called plagiocephaly, looks alarming and can affect cranial nerve functioning. Orthopedic helmets are commonly used to treat plagiocephaly, but they compress the growing cranial bones and can create medical problems later. Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) can safely and effectively improve plagiocephaly. OMM specialists assess various tension points throughout the skull, and release the restrictions to improve the symmetrical growth of the cranium. Many parents are unaware that OMM is available for treatment of flat heads and other infant medical problems. Pediatricians can refer a baby for a series of three to five treatments to help the head start growing symmetrically again. A. Travelers along the state route loop 303 to changes made to any Medicare plan. All surely have noticed some rather tall structures and several buildings erected on the freeway's eastern edge just south of Northern Avenue. It's all part of our future expansion due to open soon after the first of the year with an Americas Adventure-land theme. This new 15-acre parcel will add several animal pastures, ponds and ride attractions including: a family roller coaster, 100-foot tall zip line, and a 100-foot tall swing ride, and more. In addition, there will be a Mexican restaurant and many north and South American species we've never previously displayed such as mountain lion, black bear, bison and others. There will also be a variety of primates from central and South America. The aerial rides will enable visitors to experience some of the animals eye-to-eye among the treetops!

changes made during this time will be effective Jan. 1.

In preparation for the new animal exhibits, some of the smaller species have already begun arriving such as red, gray and even arctic foxes, skunks, Bobcat, mountain lions and many more. Larger species will begin to arrive soon now that temperatures have cooled from their summer highs.

Chronic health conditions such as diabetes and certain heart conditions provide a “once in a lifetime” opportunity to enroll in a “Special Needs Plan” when/where available.

For those new to the Valley or just visiting Arizona, the zoo, aquarium and the recently added safari park increases Wildlife World's developed area to more than 80 acres and includes another dining option for guests. As a USDA licensed, private institution, accredited by the Zoological Association of America (ZAA) and the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks & Aquariums (AMMPA), Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park receives zero taxpayer funding. We are extremely grateful for more than three decades of visitor support from the hundreds of thousands of guests to Wildlife World each year. – Dr. Grey Stafford Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park wildlifeworld.com

Outside of the “Open Election Period” Medicare requires an approved qualifying event before a plan change can be made. I highly recommend an annual plan review during the October – December time frame to ensure that the correct plan is chosen so health care needs and expectations can be met. Following are a few common “qualifying events” that Medicare recognizes that allow Medicare beneficiaries to make plan changes: Change of residence determined by ZIP code, County or State.

Voluntary or involuntary disenrollment from an employer or union plan. Any financial assistance received from the State of AZ such as AHCCCS (Medicaid) will allow continuous year-round open enrollment. Those who qualify for “extra help” from the federal government to lower the cost of prescription medications referred to as “Limited Income Subsidy” also have the opportunity to make year-round changes. FAMILY, KIDS & RELATIONSHIPS

BE PRESENT

By MS

How to Raise Kids Who Grow Up Giving The message of giving has reached new levels in recent years. While charitable endeavors have long been the center of many local community groups' outreach efforts, social media has made charitable efforts as popular as ever. Charitable giving is a family tradition in many households. Many parents find that the earlier they introduce their children to charitable giving and volunteering, the more likely their kids are to embrace these efforts, both immediately and into adulthood. Parents can impart lessons to their youngsters about the importance of giving during the end of the year, when many charities raise their public profiles, or when newsworthy events, such as devastating storms, draw attention to the less fortunate. Children who learn that they can help others will soon realize they have the power to make a difference. Recognizing that they can make a big change is a very empowering discovery for kids. Here's how parents can foster a love of giving.

Choose age-appropriate tasks

Generosity is something children can learn at an early age and continue into adulthood.

Young children do not have a lot of money, so try to find charitable tasks that allow them to donate their time and skills. Kids can help make cookies for bake sales or participate in food drives in front of grocery stores for certain charities.

to an animal shelter, they can see the fruits of their efforts paying off.

Let children choose the beneficiary of their efforts

Create a giving account or box

Children may have their own ideas about who they want to help. Let kids choose because they're more likely to get behind the effort if they feel their input is valued.

Make it a family tradition that members of the household will donate an item they receive or a small amount of money to the box each month. At the end of the year, the family can deliver those funds and gifts to a charity of choice.

Lead by example Don't just pay lip service to the idea of being charitable. Provide a good example by getting involved yourself. Make sure the entire family gets involved with the effort of giving.

Talk about giving at dinner

Let children see where their efforts are going

Make philanthropy a regular part of family conversation. Discuss the plight of the less fortunate with your children, focusing on the value of volunteering and helping others.

Writing a check is a rather unceremonious way of giving that may not resonate with young children. But if they can see food being delivered to the hungry or pet supplies going

Children can learn to be generous and give to others at an early age, and those that do are more likely to grow into charitable adults.

Facts About Open Adoption By Brandi Rarus, co-author with Gail Harris of Finding Zoe: A Deaf Woman’s Story of Identity, Love and Adoption

Sometimes an adopted child grows up wondering about his or her birth parents and family history. But that’s not the case with open adoptions, where the adoptive parents and their adopted child maintain an ongoing relationship with either one or both of the child’s birth parents. Such situations, once uncommon, have become the norm for infant adoptions, helping to lift the veil of secrecy that left many adopted children unsure of their origins. Decades ago, nearly all adoptions were closed, with no contact between birth and adoptive parents. That has changed. Here are a few facts about open adoption:

The statistics. Only about 5 percent of infant adoptions

in the U.S. take place without some sort of ongoing relationship between birth parents and adoptive families, according to a 2012 study by the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute. About 55 percent are fully open, with ongoing contact that includes the child, and 40 percent are “mediated,” where pictures and letters are exchanged, but there is no direct contact.

The advantages. Proponents say open adoptions give

children a deeper understanding of who they are and where they came from; an explanation about why they were placed for adoption; and the opportunity to have a relationship with the birth family. The child also will have no need to search for or wonder about the birth parents.

The prevalence. Adoptions, open or otherwise, are

common enough that the majority of Americans have a personal connection to them in some way. Another Donaldson Adoption Institute survey once revealed that 60 percent of Americans either know someone who is adopted, have adopted a child themselves or have put a child up for adoption. azhealthandliving.com |November 2015

Tips on Shopping for New Appliances As the weather turns cooler, outdoor improvements become less practical. Homeowners' thoughts may turn to projects they can tackle inside of the home. Now may be the time to consider the purchase of new appliances that can be the finishing touches to renovated spaces. Fall is prime time to purchase new large appliances. Manufacturers typically unveil their latest models during September and October. At this point, prices on older models will be reduced to make room for new ones. By the end of the year, any older models that have not yet been cleared out will be discounted further. Even though the end-of-the year deals will be better, the selection may be limited the longer you wait. It is best never to wait until an appliance is on its last leg for repair or replacement. Then consumers do not have the luxury to price shop nor find items that include the features they desire most. Here are some other buying tips.

Research Shoppers should begin their research at home before they even enter a store. Make a list of features you want in the appliance, which helps narrow down the playing field and better focus your purchasing decisions. Once you have a list handy, speak with friends or family members about their experiences with brands and/or retailers. Ask about which features they like the most and how often they have had to call for repairs. If they could do things differently, what would those things be?

Know your space Perhaps you are familiar with the adage to measure twice and cut once. The same can be said for measuring before purchasing an appliance. Be sure you know the exact measurements of the space that will house the new appliance. Take into consideration the clearance needed to open doors, such as with a refrigerator or front-loading washing machine. It can be a waste of time and money to have an appliance delivered only to find it doesn't fit at the time of installation.

Energy savings Consider appliances that reduce energy usage. Energy Star速 46 November 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

appliances are produced in adherence to international standards for energy efficiency. The program was started more than 20 years ago by the EPA and the Department of Energy. Since then, other countries have adopted the program. Appliances that feature the Energy Star速 logo use 20 to 30 percent less energy than required by typical federal standards. Homeowners who purchase qualifying appliances may be eligible for tax breaks and other incentives.

Consider your lifestyle It is easy to be overwhelmed and awestruck by the number of appliances available. You may desire the biggest and best there is, but if you are not a superstar in the kitchen, you may not need the commercial stove. A bachelor may not require an oversized washing machine. Do your research and comparison-shop so you won't have any regrets later.

How to Cut Costs When Hosting at Home

Some hosts may find that hosting guests at home is beyond their means. Fortunately, there are many ways for budgetconscious hosts to save money when entertaining at home.

Keep the guest list manageable. If your budget does not have much wiggle room, revisit your initial guest list and pare it down to something you can manage financially. Smaller gatherings tend to be more intimate, and hosts won't have as much work to do as they would when hosting larger get-togethers, which should allow them more time to mingle with guests.

Keep the menu simple. While you might be tempted to

dazzle guests with your culinary skills, a more elaborate menu might stretch your budget. When hosting on a budget, choose foods that won't break the bank.

Encourage guests to contribute. You also can save

money when hosting by encouraging guests to contribute to the festivities. Guests typically want to pitch in, as a way of showing their appreciation for hosts, so don't hesitate to ask them to bring some beverages or desserts with them.

Borrow items when necessary. If you're hosting for the

first time or if your serving dishes have seen better days, save money by borrowing serving dishes, wineglasses and extra seating. The cost of such items can quickly add up, but borrowing is free and your guests will no doubt be happy to contribute something to the festivities.

Use reusable dinnerware. Come the end of the night,

disposable dinnerware might seem like a godsend, saving you the trouble of washing all of those dishes and utensils. But such items cost money, and those costs can quickly add up depending on the size of your guest list. Reusable dinnerware saves you money and can benefit the environment by reducing the carbon footprint of your party. azhealthandliving.com |November 2015

How to Make Thanksgiving Dinner Healthier Thanksgiving is not often associated with healthy eating. From candied sweet potatoes to sausage-filled stuffing, Thanksgiving dinner is full of flavor, but also full of calories and fat. The Calorie Control Council claims the average American will consume more than 4,500 calories on Thanksgiving Day. Even if you won't come close to consuming 4,500 calories this Thanksgiving, you may want to take the following steps to make your Thanksgiving feast healthier.

Create a calorie deficit. A key to maintaining a healthy weight or losing a few pounds is to exercise more and eat less, a strategy that can be employed during the holiday season. Such a regimen will improve your metabolism, and your body will be better at handling the extra caloric load of Thanksgiving without packing on the pounds. Once Thanksgiving dinner is over, go for a walk around the neighborhood. This can facilitate digestion and burn even more calories. Practice portion control. It's not necessarily, what you eat on Thanksgiving, but how much you eat that makes the meal so unhealthy. The American Heart Association advises holiday celebrants to practice portion control. In addition, eat fewer high-calorie foods and fill up on lighter fare, such as vegetables and lean turkey. This way you get to enjoy a taste of everything without overdoing it. Cut down on bread. Bread can be both delicious and filling. But bread is often full of empty calories, particularly if you're eating refined, white breads. Opt for less bread in stuffing recipes and incorporate more celery, raisins, cranberries, and apples to give bulk to the stuffing. Choose whole-grain rolls and crackers to complement the main course. Choose healthier ingredients. Substitute low-fat milk or stocks for cream and whole milk in recipes. Include steamed cauliflower in mashed potatoes recipes to make them more filling and healthier. Sweet potatoes 48 November 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

tend to be sweet enough without the need for butter, sugar and marshmallows. Skim the fat and oils out of gravies and sauces before serving. Olive oil is a healthy fat that can be used in place of butter or margarine.

Focus on fruit for dessert. Thanksgiving dinner is usually followed with a decadent spread of desserts. These pies and cakes can be delicious but laden with calories. In lieu of traditional fare, serve poached fruits sprinkled with a little brown sugar and oatmeal for a tasty and healthy dessert. Low-fat sherbet, fresh fruit salad, and rice pudding also make for healthier desserts.

Choose healthy beverages. It's easy to overlook the calorie content of beverages. Whenever possible, choose water or a low-calorie drink. Children can sip on diluted apple juice. Be mindful of how many alcoholic beverages you consume. Spirits can be 100 calories per serving and are high in sugar. Thanksgiving dinner tends to be high in calories. But there are ways to cut calories from your holiday meal without sacrificing flavor.

How to Maintain Workout Routines During the Holidays

Several studies show that people can gain anywhere from 1 pound to a few pounds between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Although that might not seem like a lot of weight, a report in The New England Journal of Medicine noted that many people never lose the weight they put on during the holidays. Those who struggle to keep the weight off understand the importance of maintaining both a consistent fitness schedule and healthy eating habits. This may be challenging when the rich foods and parties synonymous with the holiday season are around to threaten healthy habits. Here's how to stay on course. Try new activities. Workouts need not be limited to exercises in the gym. Plenty of activities work the body and burn calories. Sledding, ice-skating, skiing, and snowboarding are just a few winter sports that can help you stay in shape. Add short, high-intensity exercises. Burn more calories in less time with high-intensity workouts. This way you won't need to schedule as much time for workouts but will still get the benefit of exercise. Transform chores into exercise opportunities. See that vacuum cleaner, rake, or broom as a piece of exercise equipment. While cleaning up for Holiday company, turn on the radio and get your heart pumping, too. Do leg raises while you're preparing meals or do some pushups off the kitchen counter. Use your bodyweight. Even if you can't make it to the gym, rely on your own body resistance for a thorough workout. Pushups, squats, burpees, mountain climbers, jumping rope, and lunges are some exercises that rely on bodyweight for effectiveness. Periodically exercise during the day. If you have a few free moments here and there during the day, use these opportunities to exercise. By the end of the day, you may find you squeezed in an entire workout's worth of exercise over the course of several 10-minute intervals. azhealthandliving.com |November 2015

How to Manage Credit this Holiday Season Holiday shopping takes up a considerable amount of time between Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Shoppers who scour in-store and online retailers in the hunt for the perfect gift annually spend hundreds of billions of dollars during such pursuits, and what they swipe when making purchases could go a long way toward how their new year begins. Overreliance on credit cards to make holiday purchases can prove crippling once the calendar turns to January. According to an analysis of statistics from the Federal Reserve, the average household consumer debt in the United States was more than $15,700 as of June 2015. That's roughly one-tenth the average mortgage debt, suggesting that many consumers are relying too heavily on credit cards when making their purchases. This holiday season, consumers concerned about swiping their credit cards too often can take the following steps to more effectively manage their credit.

Know what you can afford. Swiping now and dealing with the consequences in January is a recipe for a rocky new year. In some cases, it can benefit consumers to make purchases with their credit cards as opposed to their debit cards. For instance, when making purchases online, it's often safer to use a credit card rather than a debit card linked to your checking and savings accounts, as using the latter can make your life's savings vulnerable to hackers. But don't start swiping your credit cards until you know what you can afford. Examine your finances and only use your credit card if you know you can repay the balance before it incurs any interest. If you can't pay the balance in full at the time the payment is due, use a debit card so you are only spending money you already have and not taking out what amounts to a high-interest loan on your holiday purchases.

Resist retailer cards. When making in-store purchases, chances are the cashier will invite you to sign up for a retailer credit card, even offering an immediate discount if you do so at the registers. While this discount may seem too tempting to ignore, keep in mind that many retailer credit cards come with considerably higher interest fees on balances that are not paid off in full. So that discount at the 50 November 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

register may end up costing you more money if you get to January and can't pay the balance in its entirety.

Try not to juggle cards. Many shoppers juggle multiple cards to avoid building up too big a balance on one particular card during the holiday season. But that's an easy way to lose track of how much you have spent. Rather than juggling cards, use only the one with the lowest interest rate.

Monitor your balances. Swiping a credit card is easy and hassle-free, and many retailers both big and small now accept various types of cards. Keep a close eye on your balances, checking them online after each shopping trip. This can help you control your spending and also can alert you to any fraudulent activity. Shoppers who must use their credit cards this holiday season can employ several strategies to ensure they don't dig themselves into a financial hole by the end of December.

Save Money this Cyber Monday

By MS

While Black Friday, the day when many retailers drastically reduce their prices in recognition of the first official day of the holiday shopping season, remains wildly popular among holiday shoppers, in recent years the day after Thanksgiving has gotten some competition in the way of Cyber Monday. Cyber Monday is the Monday after Thanksgiving when many retailers, in particular those that are online only, offer heavy discounts via their websites. Instead of Black Friday traditions like waiting outside stores in the wee hours of the morning, holiday shoppers who can wait until Cyber Monday to start buying gifts can do so from the comforts of their homes or offices. Many Cyber Monday discounts are already set in stone. But savvy shoppers can employ a few additional strategies to make sure they're saving as much money as possible.

Be ready to buy. In the days leading up to Cyber Monday, make a list of what you want and, if possible, which retailers will have the best deals on those items (retailers may or may not advertise their Cyber Monday deals in advance). Some retailers only offer Cyber Monday deals during a relatively small window of time, so you don't want to waste time comparing prices with other retailers and risk missing a great deal. Make sure such legwork is completed before the arrival of Cyber Monday. Knowing what you want also increases the likelihood that you will get what you want on Cyber Monday, which may enable you to take advantage of free shipping deals that won't be available later in the season. Buy smart. When shopping on Cyber Monday, it's easy to be overwhelmed by sticker prices. But even the most heavily discounted items may be subject to substantial fees, negating the savings and, in certain instances, costing you more money than if you were to simply buy the item in-store. Before making any purchases on Cyber Monday, determine the shipping and handling fees and any other additional costs that may offset the deal you think you're getting. If a deal is simply too tempting to resist, see if there is an in-store pickup option to save you the cost of shipping and handling.

Know the rules. Just because you won't be waiting in line outside a store in the middle of the night on Black Friday does not necessarily mean you won't have to get up early

to take full advantage of Cyber Monday deals. In the course of doing your Cyber Monday homework, you may find certain items that you simply must have. When you find these deals, read the fine print so you know the rules regarding each specific deal. Some may say, "While supplies last" or "Limited supply." In such instances, determine when the sale starts and be ready to go the moment the item goes on sale.

Resist temptation. Cyber Monday deals are often hard

to resist, but holiday shoppers should stay disciplined and buy only those gifts they need and not heavily discounted items they are unlikely to use. Buying items you don't need can stretch your holiday budget and distract you from the shopping you need to do.

Stack 'em up. Stacking is a term used to describe the use

of multiple coupons or discount codes on a single purchase. Many retailers do not allow customers to stack discounts, but some do. Take advantage of those that do. Cyber Monday has grown in popularity as more and more consumers do their holiday shopping online. But shoppers can save even more money if they employ a few saving strategies this Cyber Monday. azhealthandliving.com | November 2015

The Hollywood powerhouse continues to shine on and off the screen Julia Roberts is a household name in Hollywood, having been active in the entertainment industry for nearly three decades. From her debut in “Pretty Woman” to becoming one of the highest paid actresses in the business, Roberts has lead a multifaceted career that has been inspiring to watch grow and evolve. One of her most recent projects is to adapt the popular documentary “Batkid Begins: A Wish Heard Around The World – A Dana Nachman Film” into a feature film. “Not even Oscar-winner Julia Roberts can resist Batkid fever,” according to deadline.com. “The actress and producer just closed a deal to adapt ‘Batkid Begins,’ the Slamdance premiere documentary about the 5-year-old leukemia patient who got his wish to be a superhero granted when thousands of volunteers, and even President Obama, helped turn San Francisco into Gotham City for a day.” Roberts plans to star in the remake and the original director, Dana Nachman, will serve as the film’s executive director.

"It's thrilling to me that Ms. Roberts and her team watched our film and were so moved by it that they want to dedicate their time and creative capital to make sure the widest audience possible will know and love Miles’ story and the spirit of this intimate special event that went global, as much as we do,” Nachman says in a press release. Roberts is also actively producing “American Girl” films with her sister—essentially bringing to life the popular dolls. And, in front of the screen, she’s most recently starred in films “Secret in Their Eyes” and “Mother’s Day.” In fact, “Secret In Their Eyes” debuts this month. Roberts is often selective when picking projects and this movie is set to be a blockbuster hit, according to critics. “It’s just a sense of choosiness for something compelling enough to keep me away from home, to a degree. I’m pretty much a stay-at-home mom and it’s incredibly fulfilling,” she tells Entertainment Weekly. “Certain stories come down the way,” she says, “where I think, ‘This bears investigating.’” Tragically, earlier this year, Roberts’ mom, Betty Lou Motes, passed away from lung cancer. And, less than two years ago, her sister passed away as well. Still, Roberts has maintained poised – busy with her career and giving back to causes she’s passionate about. Outside of her roles in Hollywood, Roberts is highly involved in a variety of causes, including UNICEF, raising awareness of Rett syndrome, and supporting environmental causes, women’s empowerment issues and more. “Julia has also become involved with UNICEF charities and has made visits to many different countries, including Haiti and India, in order to promote goodwill,” cites her IMDb page. In addition to her busy career and charity work, Roberts is also a wife and mom of three. No matter what she does next, we’re excited to continue to keep our eyes on this multifaceted Hollywood legend! azhealthandliving.com | November 2015

Remote-Control Machines: Animals Construct a whole zoo’s worth of remote-controlled animals with mechanical insides covered by colorful plastic “skins.” The animals all move using different mechanisms, each one mimicking the movement of the real animal it represents. A two-button remote control unit moves the small, lightweight motor forward and in reverse, allowing the models to move forward or backward. Build an elephant that walks, a scorpion that crawls along, and a cute little penguin that waddles. Construct a rabbit that bounds forward, a crab that scurries sideways, and an orangutan that climbs hand over hand along a string. You can even build a couple of dinosaurs: a Tyrannosaurus rex that walks on two legs and a Pteranodon that “flies” along a cord. Learn about animal locomotion and biomechanics as you build each model. When you are done, use the same 100 building pieces to dream up your own mechanical animal creations! You can even mix up the animal skins in funny ways to make outrageous hybrid animals. A full-color, 36page step-by-step illustrated manual helps kids assemble all of the models, and teaches them about the animals they are modeling and the ways different animals move. Understanding Diabetic Eye Disease Living with diabetes isn't easy. People with diabetes must routinely monitor their blood glucose levels, pay careful attention to what they eat and how much they eat and work to maintain a healthy weight, which is often preceded by taking the steps to necessary to lose weight in a healthy way. But one lesser-known potential side effect of diabetes is the impact the disease can have on eyesight. Diabetic eye disease refers to a group of problems some diabetics face as a result of their condition. Each of these problems has the potential to cause significant loss of vision, and some diabetics even go blind. Understanding diabetic eye disease, and diabetic retinopathy in particular, can help men and women with diabetes take the steps necessary to protect their vision before it's too late.

Types of diabetic eye disease Diabetic eye disease is a blanket term that refers to various problems that men and women with diabetes may face.

Cataract Cataracts are often associated with the elderly, and rightfully so, as age is a significant risk factor for cataracts, which are a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision. The lens is made of largely water and protein, and as a person ages that protein may begin to clump together and cloud an area of the lens. But this clouding can develop at an earlier age in people with diabetes.

Diabetic retinopathy The most common diabetic eye disease, diabetic retinopathy is characterized by damage to the blood vessels in the retina. Blood vessels may swell and leak fluid in some people, while other instances of diabetic retinopathy are characterized by the growth of abnormal new blood vessels on the retina. 60

November 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

Glaucoma Glaucoma, which refers to a group of diseases that damage the eye's optic nerve, is another condition most often associated with the elderly. But the National Eye Institute notes that men and women with diabetes are twice as likely to develop glaucoma as an adult without diabetes is.

Stages of diabetic retinopathy The National Eye Institute notes that there are four stages of diabetic retinopathy:

Mild nonproliferative retinopathy The earliest stage of the disease, this stage may be characterized by microaneurysms, which are small areas of swelling in the retina's blood vessels.

Moderate nonproliferative retinopathy This is when blood vessels responsible for nourishing the retina begin to be blocked.

Severe nonproliferative retinopathy During this third stage, the number of blocked blood vessels increases dramatically, depriving several areas of the retina with their blood supply. As a result, these areas send signals to the body to produce new blood vessels for nourishment.

vessels leak blood, severe vision loss and blindness can result.

Risk factors for diabetic retinopathy People with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes are at risk for diabetic retinopathy. According to the National Eye Institute, between 40 and 45 percent of Americans with diabetes have some stage of diabetic retinopathy, and the longer a person has diabetes the greater his or her risk for developing the disease becomes. In recognition of that risk, people with diabetes should get comprehensive dilated eye exams at least once per year.

Proliferative retinopathy This is when the signals sent from areas of the retina trigger the growth of new blood vessels, which are both abnormal and fragile, growing along the surface of the retina and along the surface of the clear gel that fills the inside of the eye. Though the existence of these blood vessels does not cause vision loss, when these fragile

Pregnant women with diabetes should get comprehensive dilated eye exams as soon as possible upon learning they are pregnant, as diabetic retinopathy can be a problem for women with diabetes if they become pregnant. More information about diabetic eye disease is available at www.nei.nih.gov.

Ways to Lend a Helping Hand to Seniors Men and women looking to give back to their communities can do so in various ways. Some might coach youth sports teams, while others might organize food and clothing drives for the less fortunate. Giving back to seniors in your town or city is another way to strengthen your community. Many seniors maintain their independence long past retirement age, but some may need a helping hand, as they get older. The following are a handful of ways you can improve the quality of life of seniors in your community.

Deliver meals. Seniors who are confined to their homes

typically need to have their meals delivered to them. Men and women looking to help seniors can volunteer to work with their local Meals on Wheels program. Meals on Wheels boasts a national network of more than 5,000 independently run programs, and these programs rely on more than 2 million volunteers to deliver nutritious meals to seniors with limited mobility. The need for volunteers to help seniors figures will grow in the coming decades, as Meals on Wheels America notes that the percentage of the population that qualifies as seniors will grow from 18 percent in 2010 to 26 percent by 2050.

Help around the house. The work required to maintain

a home is considerable no matter a person's age, but that task is even more difficult for seniors. Even the healthiest seniors may not have the mobility or physical strength required to keep up with household chores. Offering to help a senior maintain his or her home is a great way to improve their quality of life. Visit an elderly relative or neighbor and offer to mow their lawn, take out their garbage or perform another task they might find challenging. Performing a few chores around a senior's house won't take long, but such gestures can have a big impact on seniors' lives.

Invite seniors over for dinner. Many seniors suffer

from feelings of isolation, which can contribute to depression. Families are now more geographically diverse, and a senior's children and grandchildren may not live nearby. In such cases, it's easy for seniors to grow lonely and feel isolated from their communities. Inviting seniors over for a weekly dinner or to backyard social gatherings can help them maintain a connection to their communities and reduce their feelings of isolation. Extending such invitations also provides a great way for parents to instill in their children a respect for and appreciation of the elderly. 62

November 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

Inviting elderly relatives or neighbors over to dinner and social gatherings is a great way to make them feel like valued members of your community. Arrange transportation for seniors who no longer drive. Many seniors stop driving when they realize their skills behind the wheel have diminished. But even though they may relinquish their driver’s license, seniors still need to keep their doctor's appointments and get out of the house. Speak with your neighbors who also want to help seniors to arrange transportation for those who can no longer get themselves around town. Explain to seniors' physicians when you or your neighbors are most available to get seniors to their appointments. In addition, offer to drive seniors to the grocery store when making your own shopping trips. Many seniors made valuable contributions to the communities they call home. And those communities can give back by helping seniors overcome the demands of aging.

Gift Ideas for the Special Seniors in Your Life

By MS

With lifetimes of experiences and seemingly everything they could ever want or need in life already at their disposal, seniors can be difficult to shop for come the holiday season. Many even insist that their family members save their money and not buy them anything for the holidays. Consider the following gift ideas.

Activity assistance devices. Plenty of products exist

that can make life easier and more comfortable for older adults. Television amplifying headphones are one product that can be a great fit for seniors, particularly those having difficulty hearing their televisions. The headphones amplify the sound of the programming without disturbing others in the room, and many such headphones even allow users to mute their televisions. This feature is perfect for someone who likes to watch TV while a spouse is sleeping or reading in the same room.

Change Your Thoughts. Change Your Words. Change Your World. Sponsored by

Other devices that can make life easier for seniors include magnifying products or book holders. In addition, gel seat cushions can take pressure off the spine in the car or at home.

Food. Perhaps there is something the senior in your life used to enjoy as a child but now finds hard to come by. A search of the Internet may uncover that special treat.

Photos. Computer-savvy men and women can use photo

software to design personalized photo books, calendars, mugs and other photo-related gifts. Just about anything can be emblazoned with a photo, including tote bags and pillows. Another idea is to collect old photos and compile a memory book. Scan the images so they are preserved digitally and then print out the images in a book that includes the family history.

Time. Treat a friend or family member to a meal out or

simply spend a few hours chatting at his or her home. Sometimes the company of a new face and good conversation is the ideal gift. azhealthandliving.com |November 2015
