"I did my research online for the practices in Arizona that offer varicose vein removal. I knew I wanted the EVLT treatment and wanted the procedure done by a Physician, not a cosmetic place. I narrowed it down to three Physicians and chose Dr. Sharma for his experience. I could not be more pleased with my experience at Arizona Vein & Laser Institute. Dr. Sharma is a wonderful physician. As he is performing the procedure, he explains what he is doing and is so concerned about making you feel comfortable. As for his staff, I cannot say enough good words. One thing I have learned in my lifetime is that your employees are only as good as you are. Dr. Sharma, you have a wonderful staff which says alot about you as an employer. I spent many office visits with them and every time they were pleasant, caring and professional. I was impressed by the way they worked as a team with Dr. Sharma. Thank you so much!" Joy A.

Being a new patient and never being seen at your office before it didn't matter because the woman who answered was not only kind, friendly and sypmathetic of my situation, but she was able to fit me in that very same afternoon. I have to say how incredibly impressed I was with the entire staff at this office but even more so with Dr. Sharma and Dr. Hecht. Their bedside manners are second to none. Thank you!" Scott Schrimp

Freeze Fat Away this Father's Day!

For many aging men and women, localized fat layers can be very difficult to “work” off. Even with a regular exercise regimen and strict dietary factors, areas such as love handle, abdominal fat, and back fat can be stubborn to contour. Surgical liposuction may not be an option for many people due to cost, down time or anesthesia. Now there is another option, is a breakthrough, non-invasive procedure that uses cooling technology that noticeably eliminates fat without surgery. That’s right, similar to liposuction; the fat cells are eliminated resulting in fewer fat cells all together. Using science developed by Harvard scientist and technology by Zeltiq, induces selective fat layer reduction without any damage to overlying skin. Once the fat cells are affected by the cooling, they are eliminated from the body over the course of the next 90 days. There is no subsequent change in blood lipid levels following the procedure is completely non-invasive; there is no cutting, no needles, and no anesthesia necessary. The procedure begins with the device being attached to the area of concern with a suction sensation, and then a cold sensation is felt for the first few minutes. The area will feel either numb or cold for the remainder of the hour. During the procedure patients typically read, watch a movie, use electronic devices, listen to music, or relax. More than one area may be treated in the same appointment time. Upon consultation, your provider will determine if you are a good candidate and number of sessions that will be required for desired results and contour. is FDA cleared for the flank area and proven to be safe and effective with minimal side effects reported to resolve completely. There may possibly be some temporary pain or discomfort and your provider will discuss more on what to expect during and following the procedure. Areas that may be treated include love handles, back fat, lower abdomen, and inner thigh. Each patient is individually assessed to determine number of treatments and expectations. Most patients require one to two treatments and see noticeable reduction of fat in the treated area after one visit. Some individuals may appreciate more fat reduction with additional treatments. The cost of the procedure ranges from $1500 to $3000 depending on number of treatments and number of areas being treated. Studies show elimination of visible fat maintained past two years. Call now for an appointment to reduce those love handles for those problem areas before summer!

Father’s Day Gift Guide: Gifts for Every Dad

Together We Can Make a Difference...

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”~Psalm 119:105 Welcome to our June issue! This month men worldwide will be celebrated for their roles in many lives. Many passages in the bible reveal the role that God designed for men. These passages reveal many virtues of a man committed to building a Godly legacy for his family. Here are a few Bible verses to encourage you to fulfill God’s will.

2 Samuel 10:12 Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the Lord do that which seemeth him good.

1 Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

I Corinthians 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

1 Peter 5:5-7 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Mark 10:45 For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

Psalm 101 I will sing of mercy and judgment: unto thee, O Lord, will I sing. I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart. I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me. A froward heart shall depart from me: I will not know a wicked person. Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, him will I cut off: him that hath an high look and a proud heart will not I suffer. Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me: he that walketh in a perfect way, he shall serve me. He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight. I will early destroy all the wicked of the land; that I may cut off all wicked doers from the city of the Lord.

Matthew 6:14-15 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. Until next time, Wishing you a Happy Father's Day!

God Bless You for Your Support! Here to serve,

Granola Goes Gourmet Phoenix chef takes a bite out of the locally made food market

Many people don’t think of granola as more than a yogurt topper but a local chef has turned the tables, offering Arizona a variety of ways to experience the crunch and nutritional value of flavorful granola. Laura’s Gourmet Granola, based out of Tempe, produces hand crafted, allnatural granola that is gluten-free, dairy-free, trans fat free, soy-free, low sodium and has no cholesterol. Shortly after completing culinary school in 2002, Chef Laura Briscoe, chief granola officer, created the happy accident that would eventually become one of her pride and joys. Her quest to reduce the amount of fat and sugar normally found in classic granola spawned the perfect blend of ingredients that is now known as Vanilla Almond Crunch, the company’s most popular flavor. Originally given away as a result of recipe experimentation, Briscoe decided to sell the product, and in 2004, Laura’s Gourmet Granola hit the retail shelf at AJ’s Fine Foods, a perfect example of a local company supporting another local company. Briscoe says that each flavor of this artisan crafted granola is a great source of whole grains, fiber and protein, and contains several ingredients that offer great health benefits. She encourages people to break out of the norm and to experience granola in more than just breakfast recipes. For example, Briscoe, also known as Chef Laura, says that you can add some crunch to a peanut butter sandwich, crust a pork chop, top off a bowl of oatmeal or roll granola into no-bake energy bars. Granola is also easy to incorporate into your daily menu and is a great way to spice up an ordinary dish. In addition, it gives children—and adults— the sustenance and the boost of energy to remain alert after a long day of school or work, she adds. Briscoe wasn’t always experimenting in the kitchen as a professional chef. Previously, she worked in technology solution sales until she decided to follow her heart into the culinary industry. “It was definitely a leap of faith, but exactly the right path to take,” she says. “Since I switched gears 15 years ago, I haven’t looked back. Everything I have done personally or professionally has taken me to this point. My life is richer and more rewarding than ever as a direct result of this change, most specifically as it pertains to relationships with family, friends, clients and myself." 14 June 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

As a 28-year resident of Arizona, Briscoe is dedicated to giving back to the community as well as exploring the mountain landscape the desert has to offer. Laura’s Gourmet Granola partners with Gompers Habilitation Center and its employment services program to employ individuals with disabilities for part-time contractor opportunities. Since working with Gompers, the company has engaged several of their team with labeling and packaging job opportunities. Photo Courtesy of Deb Schwendler

The Girls Rule Foundation Local nonprofit helps girls become future leaders

Dena Patton was a young, successful owner of a PR and marketing company in New York City when tragedy hit. At age 27, she suffered a minor stroke. Looking to buy time to heal, she sold her business to a startup internet company and became its director of marketing. During that year, she found her true calling to work with women and girls. In 2000, she opened a coaching and training company working with women leaders and entrepreneurs nationwide and started to volunteer with girls’ organizations. After eight years in New York City, she moved to Phoenix on Sept. 11, 2002. While volunteering at local girls charities, she met three like-minded women who also had a passion to educate and empower girls. These women co-founded the Girls Rule Foundation with a mighty mission. It has since become a leader in empowerment, leadership and educational programs for girls ages 12 to 18. It helps young ladies build leadership, self-confidence and bright futures through its programs. “What we have found is that girls with big dreams often become women with big vision, and vision is what solves big problems in the world,” Patton says. “That is why our programs play an important role.” The organization offers five programs: an annual leadership summer camp in northern Arizona, the annual motherdaughter Shine Brightly Summit, and its brand new program, dreamLABs – a 12-week afterschool leadership club for girls. It also has two workshops, “Dream Big” and “Brilliant, Beautiful and Bold” that are free and available for local groups, schools, churches, teams and nonprofits. Girls Rule is expanding its facilitator team for these workshops

so it can serve more groups around Arizona. The organization also encourages confidence and builds leadership potential in hundreds of seventh and eighth graders at a Deer Valley middle school, at UMOM New Day Centers and Fresh Start Women’s Foundation. Patton is CEO of this 501(c)3 nonprofit, along with a part-time program manager, board of directors, and group of volunteer workshop facilitators. She also still devotes time to her coaching and training company. The organization impacted nearly 2,000 girls in 2015. However, Patton’s mission is to reach, educate and empower many more. “Arizona is third worst in girls’ success statistics and that’s not OK with me,” Patton says. “Not on my watch.” The organization’s goal for 2016 is to reach 12,000 girls around the country through the dreamLABS program and training more workshop facilitators from other states. Tish Times is on the board of directors and chairs the Brilliant, Beautiful and Bold Awards, which are presented at the annual Mother Daughter Summit. “Last year, the committee was blown away by the accomplishments, talent and aspirations of the nominees,” Times says. “The attendees and winners expressed how inspired they were by the Shine Brightly Summit. However, we were even more inspired by them. I get the opportunity to speak with the girls about every other month and am still impressed by their tenacity and desire to accomplish their dreams.”

16 June 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

“This organization helps to reinforce in the girls that they can become whatever they imagine,” she continues. “We also provide the framework and the resources to help them create their dreams and prepare to be leaders who can create companies, provide jobs, impact other lives and pay forward what they have received.”

When asked the same question, Patton replies, “I want innovative, awesome female leadership in our schools, companies, government and the world, so I help more girls become leaders and world changers.”

The secret to the girls’ success? Let them know how brilliant, beautiful and bold they already are and point them in the direction of their dreams. “I don’t ask girls, ‘What do you want to be?’” Patton says. “I ask, ‘What problem do you want to solve?’”

Successful Local Businesswoman By Taylor Vargecko Pens First Novel Sheila Grinell, a founding CEO of the Arizona Science Center, has spent four decades creating science museums. Following her mother’s heart attack and stroke that lead to losing memories, words, and sense of self, Grinell felt compelled to write her mother’s story down. She then realized she wanted to write more. Not analytic stuff about museums, but something looser and broader. At age 63, Sheila turned to write fiction. Her debut novel “Appetite,” was released on May 17 to rave reviews. “In ‘Appetite,’ two parents in a shaky marriage must stop their daughter from marrying a guru she met in India before the wedding takes place,” cites the book’s description. How Occupational Therapy Can Help Chronic Pain Sufferers Millions of people suffer from acute or chronic pain every year, and the effects of that pain extend far and wide. While pain sufferers understandably focus their attention on treating their conditions, it’s important for all people to recognize the non-physical burdens pain places on people as well. Estimates vary regarding the overall financial burden of chronic pain on healthcare systems, but numerous studies have suggested the overall costs are in the neighborhood of half a billion dollars every year. A recent report from the Institute of Medicine estimated that pain costs Americans as much as $635 billion every year, a figure that includes both the costs associated with treating pain and the money forfeited to lost productivity. Chronic pain can be uncomfortable and costly but there are ways to manage the effects of chronic pain and lead an active, productive life. Occupational therapy is one way for chronic pain sufferers to combat their conditions and improve their quality of life.

What is occupational therapy? According to the American Occupational Therapy Association, occupational therapists and their assistants utilize everyday activities to help chronic pain sufferers participate in the things they want to do and need to do, including work.

What can occupational therapists do? Chronic pain sufferers rely on occupational therapists in various ways. Occupational therapists may identify the cause of their patients’ pain, suggesting alternatives to activities or behaviors that aggravate that pain. Such identification may include evaluations of patients’ homes and work environments. Occupational therapists also teach methods for decreasing the frequency and duration of painful episodes. This may include adapting environments that tend to trigger pain. For example, if an office environment is identified as the cause of the pain or a primary trigger, occupation therapists can recommend adjustments and equipment to make that 26 June 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

environment less conducive to pain. Occupational therapists also teach clients how to use certain equipment so their pain decreases while they perform necessary tasks, such as those associated with their jobs. Many occupational therapists work in conjunction with other health care professionals who are treating their clients. This cooperation can help to determine the ideal course of treatment and may help patients hesitant to treat their conditions with medication find other avenues to overcome their chronic pain. Chronic pain is a potentially formidable foe that affects millions of people across the globe. Chronic pain sufferers can learn more about the role occupational therapists can play in combating their conditions by visiting www.aota.org.

Men Visit the Doctor Less Frequently Than Women By MS

Men and women have many similarities and differences. But the disparity between how often men visit their doctors and women visit theirs defies explanations, and men may want to start emulating women more to ensure long-term health. Various studies indicate that men are less likely to visit the doctor and tend to report ill health less frequently than women. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found that, in the United States, women are more likely to visit the doctor and participate in annual exams than their male counterparts. Similar studies have indicated this is not a distinctly American phenomenon. In a 2011 survey sponsored by insureBlue.co.uk, more than one in five men admitted they had not visited a general practitioner or other healthcare professional in the last 12 months. Only 14 percent admitted to being happy to see a doctor if they had to, while onethird revealed that they only go to a doctor if their partner encourages them or in the case of a medical emergency. Each man is different, so there is no one reason that men tend to visit the doctor less frequently than women. Women may place greater emphasis on preventative care than men, and women may be more comfortable with physicians because preventive care for women typically involves visiting gynecologists more than once per year. Men who do not visit the doctor frequently may not get the preventative care necessary to defend against illness and reduce risk of injury or disease. As a result, men may be living with undiagnosed illnesses or be self-medicating when problems arise. Men should visit their doctors at least once each year to have general physical examinations, which should include blood tests. Such visits also provide an opportunity to discuss any concerns they might have with their physicians. azhealthandliving.com |June 2016

Magnesium & Testosterone Get the Facts What is magnesium? Internet rumors suggest that magnesium is an impressive testosterone booster, especially for body builders, but do research findings hold up to the hype? Studies show that supplementing with magnesium may not be all that effective aside from treating a magnesium deficiency.

Testosterone's effects on muscle We know from extensive research that testosterone is an anabolic hormone, namely, one that helps maintain muscle integrity instead of breaking it down. On a molecular level, testosterone activates satellite cells, which eventually turn into myoblast cells that generate muscle fibers. It also seems to inhibit fat synthesis. In studies on adult men who had low testosterone levels, subjects showed significantly reduced lean body mass compared to subjects with normal testosterone levels. For athletes who depend on muscle growth and maintenance, testosterone's effects are highly coveted. However, long-term studies have shown that anabolic steroid use can lead to cardiovascular, reproductive, liver and brain damage over time.

Magnesium and testosterone Current marketing claims have tagged magnesium as a “natural” way of reaping the benefits of high testosterone without the concomitant risks of steroid abuse. While “natural” does not necessarily equate to “safe,” in this case, magnesium may not have significant effects on testosterone at all.

Molecular interactions Some research seems to show that magnesium may affect testosterone production and help free up testosterone so it can function. A study on rat testes found that moderate and high doses of magnesium enhanced the activity of two enzymes involved in making testosterone. Magnesium at high concentrations was also found to block testosterone from binding to SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin), a transport molecule that binds and inhibits testosterone’s functionality, thereby increasing free, bioavailable testosterone.

Magnesium’s effects on testosterone levels In terms of measureable increases in testosterone, supporting studies are few. So far, available studies show that if magnesium 28 June 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

increases testosterone, it’s only minimally. An often-cited study on young athletes who took 10 mg/kg of magnesium sulfate five times a week for four weeks during training noted an increase in free testosterone after exhaustion compared to placebo. However, it’s unclear in the study whether the difference between the two groups could possibly be explained by a difference in testosterone levels at baseline. In a study on magnesium-deficient subjects, normalizing magnesium levels increased testosterone slightly, but the increase was not statistically significant.

Magnesium’s effects on athletic performance Research on whether magnesium’s minor effects on testosterone improve athletic performance is also limited and conflicting. One study shows that a supplement consisting of 30 mg of zinc monomethionine aspartate, 450 mg magnesium aspartate, and 10.5 mg vitamin B-6 combined with intense physical activity increased testosterone levels compared to placebo. The subjects given the supplements also showed increased muscle strength compared to placebo. However, a similar supplement formulation was used in another study that failed to find any benefits on testosterone status or performance.

Some researchers seem to think that differences in study findings are due to unstandardized methods for measuring testosterone. Essentially, researchers don't agree on what form of testosterone is the best indicator for overall testosterone activity. Even if we remove testosterone from the equation, though, and just look at magnesium and athletic performance, research is still inconsistent. In a review of 12 different studies, five showed no positive effects of magnesium on performance, even with doses of up to 500 mg of magnesium per day for three weeks. A study of 24 young swimmers with what the researchers deemed were adequate magnesium levels showed no change in 100 m and 400 m freestyle times after three months of 486 mg of magnesium per day. In contrast, another study on swimmers suggested that there was a direct relationship between magnesium intake and 100 m freestyle times. To add to the confusion, those studies showing positive results tended to involve subjects who were magnesium-deficient, but this was not always the case. Magnesium research suffers similar limitations to testosterone research. In the review of 12 studies, six did not account for initial magnesium status of the subjects before the studies began and the other six measured “total serum magnesium.” Magnesium is mostly stored inside our bones and soft tissue cells, so serum magnesium measurements may not be a reliable indicator of our total magnesium load. In some cases, studies did not measure initial magnesium status at all. This means that from these studies, we can’t know if magnesium is really adding any benefits or if magnesium supplementation is simply correcting a deficiency.

Magnesium deficiency in athletes With all this talk about inconclusive research, we do know that magnesium deficiency is common in athletes and can affect muscle strength. In this sense, magnesium supplementation might be a good option for improving athletic performance in a significant number of athletes. Surveys seem to show that magnesium intake in physically active individuals can be low. Established values for recommended magnesium intake include the daily RDA (recommended dietary allowance) – 350 mg for men and 280 mg for women – and DRI (dietary reference intake) – 400 mg for men and 310 mg for women. Young adults who engage in exercise have been found to have an average magnesium intake of 71percent of the RDA. In a study on male and female collegiate athletes, magnesium intake was 70 percent of the DRI on average. One study found that athletes competing in sports requiring weight classifications found that magnesium consumption could be as low at 30 percent of the RDA.

On top of inadequate magnesium intake, exercise can affect serum magnesium levels. Intense and long-term exercise has been shown to reduce serum magnesium levels, leading to quicker fatigue and decreased endurance. Magnesium itself is required to sustain exercise and participates in mechanisms that lead to muscle contraction. Magnesium can be a limiting factor in athletic performance, and low levels can lead to inefficient oxygen use, muscle weakness and spasms. Magnesium supplementation in magnesium-deficient individuals can have profound effects on aerobic and anaerobic abilities. Just 25 days of 390 mg of magnesium per day was able to significantly improve oxygen uptake and work output in a study of magnesium-deficient male athletes. In collegiate athletes, magnesium supplementation was able to improve endurance performance. And young men taking more than 250 mg of magnesium per day during a seven-week strength-training program improved muscle strength and power. At a physiological level, magnesium supplementation can cause reductions in heart rate, ventilation, oxygen uptake, and carbon dioxide production during exercise, all factors indicative of increased work efficiency. Note: 350 mg per day for adults is the established Tolerable Upper Intake Limit for magnesium supplements before adverse effects like nausea and vomiting begin. Very high doses can induce severe effects like difficulty breathing, low blood pressure, arrhythmias and cardiac arrest.

The bottom line Although research does not support the use of magnesium supplements to increase testosterone levels as a means of improving athletic performance, adequate magnesium levels are required for optimal muscle activity. Since magnesium deficiency is common and exercise tends to deplete the body of magnesium stores, athletes should consider investigating whether low magnesium levels are limiting their exercise results. azhealthandliving.com | June 2016

Three Simple Things You Can Do Today to Feel Better Tomorrow Imagine you’re a spider with just one leg. You put forth immense effort to try to haul yourself around and not only does it wear you out, it’s frustrating and you don’t get far. It gets a bit easier with two legs and easier still with four legs. But it’s not till you have all eight legs that you can really dance. The eight legs represent Eight Essentials we need for optimum mental, physical and spiritual health: Empowering your human spirit; Water; Nutrition; Fitness; Sleep; Nature; Relationships; and Hands On Techniques (touch). It would be overwhelming and self-defeating to look at all eight areas and think ‘I have to make significant changes in every area immediately!’ You don’t have to and who could? I know from my experience with countless patients and friends, and even in my own life, that you can see immediate results by making a few small changes at a time. Here are three changes that are easy to make and will have you feeling better quickly:

Drink half your body weight in ounces of spring or well water every day. If you weigh 150 pounds, that’s 75 ounces of water (about 9 cups). Many of us walk around dehydrated without realizing it and that can have a significant effect on our health and how we feel. Dehydrated bodies trap toxins and encourage water retention – a natural defense against the chronic “drought.”

smell of freshly turned earth or evergreens in the woods; the touch of cool stream water on your face or feet; the sight of birds on the wing and budding blooms. These are not just pleasant little gifts to experience – we need them for restoration, renewal, revival and rehabilitation. The more disconnected we become from the Earth, the more we inhibit our body’s natural ability to heal.

Take a brisk, 10- to 20-minute walk every day.

Our bodies need the steady flow of pure, spring or well water. If you don’t like the taste, try mixing up to a teaspoon of sea salt into a quart of water.

Walking is the simplest, most natural form of exercise. You might walk a nature trail, walk to the store instead of driving or take your pet for a stroll.

A simple test for dehydration: Pinch the skin on the back of your hand and hold for three seconds. When you release, if the ridge from the pinch remains for more than a second, you’re probably dehydrated.

Three brisk 10-minute walks a day are as effective at lowering blood pressure as one 30-minute walk, according to an Arizona State University study.

Take at least a few minutes every day to connect with nature. Nature brings perpetual revitalization and ongoing renewal, especially when experienced through multiple sense: the 30 June 2016| azhealthandliving.com

Outdoor walking is preferable to walking on a treadmill or other machine, since the uneven surfaces and changing directions of natural walking will engage more muscles and tendons. While walking, swing each arm in synchronization with the opposite foot to strengthen your cross-crawl functionality and mind-body balance.

What It Takes to be a Team Player By MS

The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But, in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills. So what does it mean to be a team player exactly? The following are some traits of successful team players.

Meets deadlines: People working together on a project have their own unique responsibilities regarding such projects. It’s important that the end result is produced on time; otherwise, the entire group pays the price. Employees who care about their teams consistently meet their deadlines, making things easier for their fellow team members as a result. Adapts easily: Team players are willing to adapt to change and take others’ suggestions. Professional flexibility and openness to ideas are important traits, as you just may learn something from team members when you try things their way. Listens attentively: In order for a team to function, every member has to listen to what his or her coworkers are saying. This also includes being receptive to criticism without lashing out. Listening can sometimes be more important than speaking. Communicates clearly: Team players effectively communicate their thoughts and ideas. This includes

using language that is constructive, honest and respectful.

Participates frequently: Even when his or her own work is done, a team player does not shy away from taking on the tasks of others to ensure a project is completed on time. This also can include offering tips or pointers. Happily shares the spotlight: Never the glory hog, a team player is content to stand in the spotlight alongside coworkers. Team players make sure everyone is involved and recognized equally, and even take their share of the blame when things go awry. These team player tips work well for both professional and personal settings. azhealthandliving.com | June 2016

varicose veins? In general, varicose veins are caused when certain venous valves become weaker, which permits blood to flow backward and pool in the inside of veins. However, other factors also contribute to varicose veins, including water retention.

Causes: When it comes to varicose veins, your first step should be to eliminate foods from your diet that may be making you retain water. As a general rule, any food with high sodium content causes water retention. Varicose vein treatment often begins with removing canned soups, pizza, hot dogs, frozen foods, certain salad dressings, cheeses, soy sauce and pickles from your diet. Instead, eat foods that are high in fiber and potassium.

Consequences: If your body has too much sodium or insufficient stores of potassium because it is retaining water, varicose veins will worsen. That is because water retention causes the volume of blood circulating in your body to increase, which then puts pressure on your already delicate veins. Pressure on varicose veins weakens them over time. If you have always had a high salt diet, you are more likely to suffer from varicose veins.

Treatments: Vein treatment generally begins conservatively. Your physician will suggest incorporating a potassium supplement, drinking plenty of water, and removing salty and sweet foods from your diet. If you are suffering from a more serious side effect like varicose vein pain or simply want to have these ugly veins removed, your doctor can work with you to create a customized treatment plan to eliminate your varicose veins for good. –Dr. Sharma Arizona Vein & Laser Institute 602.298.VEIN(8346)

or other tissue has abnormally protruded through the abdominal wall cavity. They may cause little to no pain at first. A hernia can be in your groin, on your abdomen, or associated with a previous scar. A bulge or hernia that is associated with redness, nausea, or severe pain can mean a strangulated hernia. A strangulated hernia is always a dangerous condition in which the blood supply to the hernia and to its contents is cut off. It must be addressed immediately before sepsis sets in, which can lead to death. A hernia will not go away on its own and will not get better. Delaying treatment can only increase your risk for strangulation and increase your risk for complications. A strangulated hernia will require a traditional open surgery, a 3-5 day hospital stay, as well as a prolonged recovery time. Laparoscopic surgery is best instituted early on, where healing, recovery, and postoperative pain are all significantly improved over traditional open surgery. A laparoscopic procedure allows for smaller incisions, quicker recovery, less pain and no hospital stay. Typically, the procedure can be done through three micro incisions in less than an hour. Now is the time to address your hernia, don’t wait for complications. Your health should come first.

without glasses is completely satisfactory for their needs.

The most important preventative step is regular eye exams. Just like annual trips to the doctor or dentist, make regular eye exams part of your family’s health care routine. Many potentially blinding medical conditions of the eye can be detected and treated with early intervention. Glaucoma is a particular disease that if left undetected will lead to blindness. In the early stages of the disease, there are no symptoms that the patient experiences and it can only be diagnosed through a routine eye exam. Another very important preventative measure is to wear UV protective sunglasses. Especially here in Arizona where the sun is so intense, the simple act of wearing sunglasses can prevent or slow down cataracts and macular degeneration. The old adage, “You are what you eat,” rings true with your eyes as well as your waistline. Eating food rich in antioxidants, such as spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, peas and tangerines, is very important to eye health. Also, omega-3 fatty acids have been proven therapeutic in both macular degeneration and dry eye. Omega-3s can be included in your daily diet by either eating fish daily or taking fish oil supplements.

has fat collecting around the neck and abdominal area, putting pressure on the airway as well as the lungs, thus making it difficult for the body to breathe.

The most likely candidates are middle aged and elderly males, who gain weight primarily in the neck and abdomen. This type of weight gain is dictated by testosterone. Similar weight gain occurs in women who are entering menopause, have hormonal imbalances or are pregnant. Weight gain has also been linked to insulin production, glucose intolerance, diabetes and metabolic disorders. While metabolic disorders, hormonal imbalances, and physiological changes such as menopause create difficult conditions for weight loss, research shows that weight loss significantly reduces sleepdisordered breathing problems. A 2002 study conducted by the University of Wisconsin and the Boston University School of Medicine identified obesity as one of a list of risk factors that, if reduced or eliminated, would decrease the severity of a sleep-disordered breathing problem. If you wake up tired in the morning, suffer from headaches, snore, experience gastro esophageal reflux, depression, any kind of cardiovascular or pulmonary disease, and you are overweight, I highly suggest a neck circumference measurement and a body mass index (BMI) calculation. Q. Do you have any suggestions for preventing injury and pain?

and flexibility. However, we can’t stop thinking about that possible injury and pain during or after exercise. It’s true that movement helps us stay healthy. Stable joints, healthy bones, muscles and ligaments are important for avoiding any excruciating lower back pain from our daily activities. Muscles are formed with millions of muscle fibers and cells. As our daily movements become frequent and intense, a series of painless micro-injuries of the muscle fibers may slowly build up and initiate pain and muscle spasm. When dealing with pain and injuries, the progress of healing could not continue without support of the body’s biomechanical function such as proper body posture, joint movement and nutrition. Some suggestions to help prevent injury and pain:

Maintain proper bone alignment and movement. A proper spinal curve

and body posture can help maintain proper body’s biomechanical function and joint movement.

Exercise regularly. A simple, gentle range of motion exercise is essential to improve delivery of nutrients and removal of metabolism waste products away from muscle fibers.

Reduce stress and maintain adequate rest after exercise. This

are often asked if you're tired, eyelid surgery may provide the solution to these issues. Many factors contribute to showing signs of age and the eyes are no exception. As we age, the delicate skin around the eyes is often the first to show weakened collagen, producing wrinkles and loose skin. The fat that supports the eyes can shift, causing puffiness. Eyelid surgery can take years off your look and is considered a minor surgery, safely performed under local anesthesia. The goal is to remove the parts that add age to your look and restore your eyes to their youthful sparkle.

For aesthetic reasons, plastic surgeons perform this cosmetic surgery to reduce heavy eyelids and puffy bags under the eyes. Simply removing some excess skin on the upper eyelids can open the eyes, leaving you appearing more alert. Removing the herniated fatty tissue, and sometimes a small amount of skin, on the lower eyelids can dramatically change your face from looking tired to looking refreshed.

by oral hygiene product companies, that for optimal oral health, a person should have a cleaning twice a year. The truth is there are several reasons why more frequent cleanings can actually be better for you. If you are someone who deals with an autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, a heart condition, diabetes, or undergoing chemotherapy, more frequent cleanings can help prevent certain medical conditions from getting worse. Diabetes for example can increase your risk for tooth decay and gum disease. Bacteria, viruses and fungi occur naturally in the mouth. Regular oral hygiene usually can keep them in check. However, under certain conditions, they can impede how your body fights other illnesses. More than one third of people undergoing chemotherapy treatment develop oral health complications such as dry mouth, periodontal disease and decay.

Eyelid surgery, also referred to as blepharoplasty, is one of the most common surgeries performed in the United States. People as young as their thirties to as old as their nineties have this surgery to look better and often see better. An in-office consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon will help you determine if this surgery is right for you.

Always communicate your complete medical history with your dentist including medications you are taking. Although most insurance plans will cover two cleanings a year, there are situations in which three to four cleanings, even if paid out of pocket, would be of huge benefit and warrant the extra cost.

PRP injections have been shown to relieve acute and chronic pain and accelerate healing of injured tissues and joints. It is used for various conditions including tennis elbow, rotator cuff injuries, hip and knee arthritis, low back injuries and almost every area that has some “wearing and tearing” or acute injury type problem.

The limited blood supply and poor healing properties of ligaments, cartilage, and tendons make treatment necessary after injury. Many different options for treatment of pain provide more of a “Band-Aid affect” and sometimes can accelerate degeneration. Using platelets we're able to do just the opposite and accelerate healing thereby eliminating the cause of the pain. The process is done by collecting platelets by a small sample of the patient's blood and placing it into a special centrifuge machine. A portion of the plasma is then removed and the patient's concentrated platelets are mixed with the remaining plasma to form a concentrated solution. This platelet Rich's solution has been injected into and around the injured tissues. An amazing thing happens when the PRP is injected. The growth factors from the platelets “talk” to other important cells including stem cells and tell them to come over and heal the area. The injection is usually done with some sort of guidance including ultrasound guidance and or fluoroscopic guidance and typically, only one or two injections are needed.

problems for an individual the longer it goes untreated. Many people live with hearing loss and convince themselves it is not bad enough to do something about it. Untreated hearing loss leads to auditory deprivation which can cause the hearing nerve to atrophy or shut down over time. If the hearing nerve atrophies because it has not been stimulated for a long period of time, the clarity of hearing can deteriorate. Once the clarity deteriorates, hearing aids will just amplify the muffled hearing that remains. When hearing aids are worn after the auditory nerve has shut down, the biggest complaint using hearing devices is clarity. Recent studies by Johns Hopkins University have also shown that untreated hearing loss can lead to an earlier onset for dementia. Keeping all of the areas of the brain stimulated and functioning to their full potential helps to decrease the risk for dementia.

The truth is Botox subtly smoothes the moderate to severe lines around the eyes and between the brows. Other Botox uses include treatment for excessive sweating, TMJ and other facial and neck areas. Many men believe Botox is only for women. Not true, we are increasingly seeing more men come into the office. Another concern is often cost. Everyone always wants to know what Botox costs. There are a couple things to consider when comparing costs. First, there is the price of the product - you want to ensure you are buying authentic Allergan Botox® Cosmetic. Second, you are paying for the experience, talent and training of the medical professional injecting you. It is critical to have an experienced injector to ensure the most natural results and that you'll still look like you.

arthritis, and diabetes are "preventable diseases of under-nutrition and malnutrition."

The latest dietary guidelines (based on research from the National Cancer Institute and the U.S. Department of Agriculture) set the recommended daily servings of fruit and vegetables at five to 13, or 2 1/2 to 6 1/2 cups a day. Despite this, according to the Center for Disease Control, only 24 percent of Americans eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day. This apparent nutrient deficit would account for the nearly 133 million Americans afflicted with at least one chronic disease! Rich with phytonutrients that strengthen your immune system, extend your lifespan, and decrease your chances of developing a lifethreatening illness, wheatgrass aids in disease prevention. It is also a rich source of amino acids, vitamins, antioxidants and minerals such as potassium and magnesium. Wheatgrass is considered a complete food and our cold-dried process keeps the enzymes intact, as in fresh picked fruits and vegetables, to maintain its food value. Best Organic Wheatgrass powder is grown "aeroponically" (not in soil) just like a sprout is grown. This process allows the roots to be used, in addition to the leaves, for more nutrition. A drink of our wheatgrass is an easy way to fill your daily nutritional quota, lose weight, enhance health, detoxify and boost your energy in the process. What better news for those who find it challenging to eat five to 13 servings of fruits and vegetables a day!

Q. What is there to do at Wildlife Q. I’m turning 65 in four months— World for families during the summer? when and how do I sign up for A. Visitors are often surprised to discover Medicare? that, even with temperatures warming up, there is still a lot to experience at Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park.

A. With 10,000 people turning 65 every day

The aquarium encompasses more than 80 exhibits spread throughout four separate buildings and features sharks, otters, penguins, sea lions, a white alligator, in addition to a stingray touch tank. In our Tropics of the World building, visitors can get up close and personal with a boa constrictor, as well as explore more than 40 tropical species that call Wildlife World home. Visitors can then make their way to the Small Mammals building, which houses many small creatures including various primates, bats and kinkajous. Visitors can then find themselves in our Baby Animal Nursery, where families are able to observe an assortment of baby animals being cared for by our expert hand raising team.

Let’s start with the “when”: Medicare provides a seven month window called the Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) that begins three months before and ends three months after your 65th birth month.

Adventure Land’s recent opening has lead to three additional indoor exhibit buildings that feature a variety of animals from North, South and Central America. The Log Flume ride is a summer time favorite among guests, given its a great way to get wet and see a variety of animals up close and personal. Wildlife World also has four cafés where families can cool off and enjoy a delicious lunch. Families can enjoy fine Mexican food at our newest café, Zoobertos, or dine next to a 60,000-gallon shark tank in the aquarium while enjoying BBQ at Dillon’s Restaurant. With half of our exhibits located indoors, visitors typically explore the outdoor exhibits earlier in the day and then head inside as the temperature heats up. – Kristy Morcom Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park wildlifeworld.com

in the United States, “when” and “how” to sign up for Medicare is a very important topic.

Let’s assume you’ll turn 65 on December 10, your IEP will begin on September 1 and end on March 31. If you sign up during the first three months, your Medicare effective date will be December 1. Delaying enrollment will also delay your Medicare effective date. Assuming again your birth date is December 10, by delaying your Medicare enrollment until January (although still within your seven month window), your Medicare benefits will not be effective until March 1. Most people enroll in Medicare prior to their 65th birth month to avoid any delays for coverage. Now, let’s answer the “how” question. Social Security handles this job and there are three ways to enroll: • A phone appointment by calling Social Security at 800.772.1213. • An in-person session at your local Social Security office. • Or online at www.socialsecurity.gov/ Medicareonly. Once enrolled in Medicare you’ll want to complete your coverage by selecting a Medigap policy plus a Part D plan or enrolling in a Medicare Advantage plan that includes prescription drug coverage.

FAMILY, KIDS & RELATIONSHIPS

BE PRESENT

By MS

Find the Right Father’s Day Gift Father’s Day is an annual celebration of fathers and the contributions they make to their families. Dads get their due on Father’s Day when sons, daughters and wives typically give dad a few gifts to show their appreciation for all he has done for them and how much he means to them. Finding the right Father’s Day gift is not always so easy. No two fathers are the same, so while a silk necktie might bring a smile to one father’s face, such a gift may fall flat with other dads. By asking themselves a few questions in the weeks before their dads’ big day, Father’s Day shoppers can narrow down their options and find gifts that Dad will appreciate.

What are Dad’s hobbies? Even if your father or husband loves what he does for a living, a gift that indulges one of his favorite hobbies may be just the thing to make this Father’s Day extra special. Outdoorsmen may prefer some new camping or fishing gear, while fathers who have an artistic side may prefer some new paint brushes and canvasses. If Dad’s a car guy, book a day at a nearby racetrack where he can race around the track and embrace his inner racecar driver.

What does Dad need? Sometimes the best gifts are what a recipient needs as opposed to what he wants. If you no longer live at home, ask your mother if there’s anything your father needs that would make his life easier or more enjoyable. If you live at home, pay close attention to your father to see if there’s anything that could lighten his load. For example, if Dad loves spending time in the garden, take a sneak peek at his gardening tools and replace any that have grown dull or rusty.

What does Dad want? For the Dad who doesn’t seem to need anything, consider something he may want that he’s never had 44 June 2016

before. If Dad loves to cook but has never had formal training, enroll him in a cooking class. If Dad loves a local sports team but hasn’t been to a game in years, purchase tickets to a game and go with him to make the day even more special.

Is Dad a techie? Dads with a love for technology are living in the golden age of gadgets. Father’s Day shoppers looking to satisfy their fathers’ love of technology have a host of possibilities at their disposal. Even if Dad is an early adopter who tends to get all the latest gadgets before anyone else, the tech industry evolves so rapidly that you’re bound to find something new on Dad’s wish list that he hasn’t purchased yet. Finding the right Father’s Day gift can be challenging. But shoppers who stop to think about their father and what makes the family patriarch happy can unearth a host of gift ideas that Dad is sure to love.

Simplify Flying with Babies in Tow By MS

While there is no way to guarantee infants won’t shed a few tears during their next flight, the following are a handful of ways to simplify flying with kids less than two years of age.

Choose an infant-friendly flight time. Flying at a time

of day or night when infants typically sleep can increase the chance that babies will sleep through much of the flight, if not the whole trip. When booking flights, keep kids’ usual naptime in mind before selecting an itinerary. It also pays to familiarize yourself with the airline’s policy regarding infants and carry-on bags before booking your flight.

Choose an aisle seat. You and your baby likely won’t make it through the flight without having to stand up and walk to the bathroom or simply walk the aisle to calm your baby’s nerves. Choose an aisle seat so you don’t have to ask your spouse or the passenger sitting next to you to stand up several times during the flight.

Feed your child and check his or her diaper before takeoff. Prepare for takeoff and initial descent. Pressure changes in airplane cabins tend to be most noticeable during the takeoff and initial descent. Such changes are when ears are most likely to pop. Speak with flight attendants upon boarding, asking for advice about managing any pain that might result from popping ears. Some parents find that offering infants pacifiers or bottles as cabin pressure is about to change can help infants make it through such changes without crying. Keep in mind that pilots typically announce when planes are about to begin their initial descent, which may be 20 to 30 minutes before the plane is scheduled to land. azhealthandliving.com | June 2016

Prevent Bedbugs at Home After Traveling “Sleep tight, don’t let the bedbugs bite” may have been a clever thing to say when tucking children in at night, but bedbugs are more than just child’s play. Bedbugs have long been a threat to humans and other animals. Archaeologists have found fossilized bedbugs in human dwellings in Egypt that date back roughly 3,550 years. Greek playwrights have mentioned them, and they’re even referenced in the Talmud. Even though bedbugs are commonly associated with areas void of cleanliness, just about any person can end up with a bedbug infestation. That’s because bedbugs are very good at hitchhiking. They can nestle into small crevices, such as in the cracks of suitcases, clothing and linens. Then those same bedbugs can take up residence in another home, dormitory or office. The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) says bedbug encounters have become more common in public places in recent years. Travelers need to protect themselves by learning how bedbugs operate and how to prevent them from becoming a problem.

The following are some fast facts about bedbugs: •Bedbugs are found living with humans worldwide. •Bedbugs feed on human blood to survive and reproduce, feeding roughly every three to seven days. •While an immature female bedbug or a male bedbug will not cause an infestation in a home, all it takes is one pregnant female to lay eggs anywhere she wanders. It takes eggs only six to 10 days to hatch, according to the National Pesticide Information Center. •Bedbugs can survive cold temperatures and go months without feeding. Drying out kills bedbugs in isolated areas more so than not feeding. With this knowledge in mind, people can prevent bedbugs from becoming a problem.

The NPMA recommends the following bedbug prevention tips, particularly during and after staying in a public place: • Pull back sheets and inspect mattress seams for telltale 46 June 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

Bedbugs can hitch rides home from hotel rooms, offices and dorms. The key to avoiding a bed bug infestation is to prioritize prevention at the outset. bedbug stains. Inspect the entire room, including sofas and chairs and behind the headboard, before unpacking. Notify management of anything suspect and change rooms or establishments immediately. • If you need to change rooms, don’t move to a room adjacent or directly above or below the suspected infestation. • Keep suitcases in plastic trash bags or protective covers during your stay to prevent bedbugs from nesting there. • When home, inspect suitcases before bringing them into the house and vacuum them before storing. • Wash all clothes — even those you did not wear— in hot water if you suspect the presence of bedbugs and their eggs. • Inspect yourself for any bites. While a bedbug bite may not hurt, it can cause itching and irritation. Presence of bites is a clear indication that bedbugs are around and need to be treated. Bedbugs can be problematic. With the increase in travel this summer, bedbugs can start spreading to new areas. Be diligent in your efforts to prevent infestations.

Prepare Your Home for the Summer

By Mike Donley of Donley Service Center

While July is usually our hottest month, now is the time to prepare your air conditioner and home to ensure the lowest energy bills and maximum efficiency. Here are some tips to make sure your home is in shape for the long summer ahead:

Change your air filter. Our dry, dusty climate can quickly clog your filter, which can lead to higher energy bills and more repairs. It’s a good idea to clean or replace your filter every month.

Clear and cool the area. Planting shrubs or trees can provide shade to the air conditioning unit, which leads to less electricity being used. But, not too close or you’ll restrict airflow. Make sure the area is free of leaves, weeds and debris.

Seal the leaks. The fastest way to save money is to use caulk or weather stripping on your doors and windows.

Set it and forget it. You won’t conserve energy by

constantly changing the thermostat. Set it at the highest comfortable level and leave it. Or, try a programmable thermostat that will automatically adjust for times you are away and sleeping. Note: Keep your setback point 4 degrees or less when setting a programmable thermostat.

Use ceiling fans. They move the air so you feel cooler but turn them off when no one’s in the room.

Move the lamps. Thermostats can pick up the heat from lamps, TVs and appliances, so keep them away.

Invest in sunscreens. Keep blinds and drapes closed and install sunscreens to keep the heat out.

Although the Environmental Protection Agency cites that the average air conditioner lasts 15 to 20 years, in Arizona we generally experience a shorter life span – closer to 12 to 15 years. While it may seem like a pretty wide span, we know that properly maintained units that are checked annually by qualified technicians last the longest and run the most efficiently during our triple digit temps. azhealthandliving.com | June 2016

Myth #1: Snacking is bad We’ve all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but have you ever wondered why? After sleeping and not eating for several hours, your body requires food to give you the necessary energy to get your day started. This same concept applies to meals throughout the rest of the day; the longer you wait to eat between meals, the more energy you’ll lose, and the hungrier you’ll be. Waiting more than five hours to eat can lead to a dramatic drop in blood sugar, leading you to eat whatever’s nearest just to get something in your system. When this happens, it’s not uncommon to overeat. Many dieticians recommend eating up to five or six small meals throughout the day. Eating small, healthy snacks between big meals can curb your appetite; the key is to keep these snacks healthy and portion controlled. Snacking the right way can help you eat less over the course of the day than you would have consumed if all of your calories had came from three large meals.

Myth #2: The more time in the gym, the better Nothing ruins the satisfying feeling of getting into an exercise groove quite like an injury that puts you out and sets your fitness goals back. One of the best ways to increase your chance of this happening is by working out every day. When you exercise, you’re essentially tearing muscle fibers. Taking time off allows muscle to build back stronger than before, and will ensure that you’re able to continue working out consistently in the future. When no rest days are taken, muscles are not allowed to strengthen, and in turn, they won’t allow you to lift heavier weights or increase your repetitions. The bottom line: your body needs time to recover, especially after a particularly grueling workout. Beginners may want to take every other day off, while those more advanced may find that one day off a week allows for sufficient recovery time.

Myth #3: Cardio is the best way to lose weight 48 June 2016

| azhealthandliving.com

Cardio workouts are great for burning fat efficiently, but can also cause you to lose some of the good stuff: muscle. Adding strength training to your exercise routine will ensure that the calories burned during cardio are just from fat, and will keep your muscles toned. Plus, the muscles you build during weight training will make your cardio workouts easier, and help prevent injuries from occurring. Weight training helps keep your metabolism high after you’ve stopped working out. This effect can only be achieved in a cardio workout by High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). In the end, both cardio and strength training are beneficial to the body and your fitness journey in different ways. Incorporating a combination of both into your exercise regimen is ideal. When the rumor mill gets going, falling victim to bad advice is easy. For this reason it’s always a good idea to do your own research on fitness theories and exercise techniques. Talking to a professional can also help guide you to an exercise program designed specifically for your body and health goals. Remember that everyone is different, and what may be best for one person might not work for you!

Three Secrets to Making Morning Workouts a Reality By MS

Hectic schedules dominated by obligations to work and family can make it difficult to find time to exercise. But working out in the early morning can help men and women meet recommended exercise guidelines and might even provide a noticeable energy boost throughout the rest of the day. Men and women can expect to run into some obstacles when first establishing a morning workout routine, but a few simple strategies can help make that transition go more smoothly.

Prepare the night before Waking up with a to-do list in the morning takes away from the time you have to exercise. Rather than fumbling for your gym clothes and sneakers in the darkness of your pre-dawn bedroom, lay out your workout gear before going to bed each night. Lay out your work clothes as well so you spend more time exercising in the morning and less time choosing an outfit.

Set your alarm earlier than you intend to wake up Few people wake up the moment their alarm clocks first go off. Snooze buttons may help you ease into your wakeup routine, but those post-snooze button minutes are minutes you could be spending getting your recommended daily exercise. If you’re a snooze button devotee and you want to be up by 6 a.m., then set your alarm for 5:50 a.m.

Get a good night’s sleep A good night’s sleep will help you feel more energetic when that alarm goes off, even if it is going off before the sun rises. Exercise and sleep go hand in hand, as studies have shown that routine exercise actually improves quality of sleep because exercise is a beneficial stressor to the body, which responds to the stress of exercise by increasing the amount of time the body spends in deep sleep. Many adults struggle to find time for daily exercise, but early morning might be the best time for busy men and women to break a sweat. azhealthandliving.com | June 2016

Employment: The Next Step After Graduation Graduation is an exciting time in the lives of students. After years in the classroom preparing for life after school, graduation marks a time when students are finally ready to enter the “real world” and land their first professional job. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) advises that earning a college degree can greatly improve a person’s chance of landing a job. The more education a person receives, the lower his or her prospects of being unemployed become. The BLS said that, as of 2014, individuals with a bachelor’s degree could earn on average $1,101 per week, compared to $668 for persons with high school diplomas. Those with bachelor’s degrees had a 3.5 percent unemployment rate compared to 6 percent for those with just high school diplomas. The National Center for Education Statistics estimates that roughly two million students earn bachelor’s degrees each year. Many others will go on to earn masters or doctorates before entering the workforce. As the economy continues to improve, job prospects follow suit. According to a job outlook from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers had plans to hire 8.3 percent more new college graduates in 2015 than in 2014. The growth of businesses and the rising rate of retiring Baby Boomers has spurred employment prospects. Landing a job post-graduation requires diligence on the part of new grads, and the following are a handful of ways to make those pursuits more successful.

Hit the ground running. Recent grads can get a head

start on their competition by beginning their searches immediately after earning their degrees. Create a list of a few target companies you have your eye on, and then tap into your network to find a contact at each company and reach out to that contact directly.

Focus on a career path. Prospective employers prefer

that applicants have some certainty regarding the types of jobs they are looking for. Take a career assessment test or work with a career counselor to narrow down the fields and positions that speak to you. Avoid the “I’m willing to do or learn anything” approach to job applications. Employers may see that as desperation.

Don’t always rely entirely on the internet. Oftentimes,

landing a good job requires reaching out to people in person. 50 June 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

In a MonsterCollege survey, 78 percent of job-seekers said networking was a factor in their job searches. Standing out from the crowd may involve physically standing out. Attend conferences or speeches from people who work at the companies you’re investigating. Don’t be afraid to shake some hands and introduce yourself to others.

Think about what you can offer to prospective employers. Narrow down your specific skills and

customize your résumés or cover letters to the specific talents you can offer each potential employer. Use examples that illustrate these skills from past school courses, volunteerism or part-time jobs. Your “quirks,” like being the most punctual person in your group of friends, may turn out to be the skill an employer admires the most. Consider developing a career portfolio that highlights your past achievements.

Do your homework before an interview or networking opportunity. Always be prepared before an interview or

when meeting with someone you are soliciting for job help. Research the company and know its background so you have an idea of how the company runs. Keep a list of questions at the ready. A knowledge of the company can help you stand out from other applicants.

Tips to Make Your Resume Stand Out

By Nick Morrison of Vincent Benjamin Recruiting and Staffing

There is no exact formula for writing the perfect resume. Imagine a world where everyone submits identical resumes, except for one person whose resume is unique. Who do you think will get the call for the interview and will end up getting the position? Here are some expert tips for making your resume stand out:

Include your accomplishments. There are certain skills

that all professionals bring to the table. Your job is to ensure that you demonstrate what differentiates you from the other resumes that have been received. Rather than simply listing your skills, show exactly how they have served you, your career, and your employers in the past.

Set clear goals. Experts suggest that you customize each resume for each job for which you apply. However, what you could do is customize your search for the job you really want. Create and form a resume which highlights you as a professional and only go after the jobs which you either want or that will help you in the future.

Include keywords. In today's digital world, resumes are often read by a computer before any person gets to see them. So in order to pass the first test, you need to include the common words and phrases the computer program has set as targets. However, you do need to add them to your resume in a natural way so they do not stick out when they get to the actual people.

Sum up your experience. Of course with all your

accomplishments and keywords, it is important to also include all that experience. Rather than creating a list, develop a summary for each position you've had that will quickly communicate your skills. This can also be an easy way to incorporate those accomplishments and keywords. azhealthandliving.com |June 2016

Carrie Underwood

The country music star keeps rising to the top More than a decade after winning “American Idol,” it’s hard to picture the musical landscape without country superstar Carrie Underwood. “Since winning ‘American Idol’ in 2005, Underwood has sold 58 million records worldwide, scored 21 No. 1 hits (including 11 she co-wrote), and earned over 100 major awards,” according to her official website, www.carrieunderwoodofficial.com. One of the most awarded singers of any musical genre, her latest album “Storyteller” was released late last year to rave reviews. The sensational singer just finished up her Carrie Underwood Storyteller Tour, which stopped in Phoenix in mid-April. “The ‘Storyteller’ album marks the beginning of a new chapter in every way in my life and my career,” Underwood says on her website. “Musically, I feel like I’m stronger than I’ve ever been. I feel like I’m more confident in myself as an entertainer, as a songwriter, as a singer. I’ve definitely evolved, and it’s all been very organic.” “The album has some songs that are a little more gritty and edgy, and others that have an R&B feel to them,” she continues. “Then there are these other songs that are just twangy. We brought in a lot of different elements in a way that makes the album feel fresh and new. I hope people just call it good music.” One of the biggest changes in her life—and the focal point of some of her recent work—is motherhood. Wife to hockey player Mike Fisher, the couple has a 1-year-old son named Isaiah Michael. “He likes to sing,” she recently told PEOPLE magazine 52 June 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

about her son. “If you just go ‘la-la-la’, he’ll go ‘la-lala-la.’ He mimics really well.” Underwood’s prowess as both a mom and fixture in the entertainment industry is so well known that Working Mother magazine included her on their list of 2016’s Most Powerful Moms. “I am so blessed to have this career and get to do to the things I do, but there is nothing like that moment when I get to step onto the stage to sing and all the fans are singing along with me,” she told music website Taste of Country. In addition to motherhood and her busy career, Underwood makes time to give back to a variety of causes. According to a recent article on AOL, Underwood is part of Carnival cruises’ partnership with Operation Homefront, which supports military families. As part of her work with them, she meets and talks with service members and their families during her concert tour. “I get to meet some great kids and great families and do a private show for them in New York,” she told AOL. “… You don't understand being a parent until you are a parent. You can relate to other people and their lives. We all have different jobs and demands and expectations, but we have this in common. Being a parent is hard and fun and exciting.” In addition to her work with the troops, Underwood also supports her hometown of Checotah, Oklahoma through the C.A.T.S. Foundation. The foundation helps with everything from the area’s local school system to its animal shelter. “My hometown is extremely supportive of me and I feel blessed to be able to create something as a way of giving back; to say thank you,” she says of the foundation. Added to her impressive music career, Underwood has also starred in film and television roles and launched her own fitness lifestyle line called CALIA by Carrie Underwood. STAY HEALTHY

By Jonathan Sherman, Carrington College dean of Health Science Programs

How to Properly Dispose of Unneeded Medication It seems that as we age we often need more medications for various aches, pains and ailments. But, what do you do when you no longer need a specific drug but you have leftover pills? Here are some helpful suggestions on what to do – and what not to do – with medications you no longer need:

Sharing is not caring Picture it: You’ve been prescribed medication for migraines. Your friend starts complaining about having a headache, so you offer him one of you migraine meds. Seems harmless, right? Wrong. Even though your mother taught you to share, sharing is not caring when it comes to prescribed medications. It doesn’t matter if your friend has the exact same symptoms as you did when you were prescribed the medication, do not share your prescription with them. You are not a doctor. Sharing medication meant only for you could land them in the emergency room, or worse.

Not sure how to find the collectors in your neighborhood? Try calling 1.800.882.9539.

Oh, it also happens to be illegal.

Follow these simple rules

Don’t automatically “courtesy flush” A couple extra pills in the bottle that you don’t need, so you can just flush them down the toilet, right? Think again. It used to be pretty common for people to flush extra meds to keep them out of the wrong hands, but experts say that can actually be dangerous.

If you can’t find a registered collector or take back initiative near you, there are some basic steps the FDA does offer if you have to toss those medicines in the household trash:

Step one: Mix medicines (do not crush tablets or capsules) with an unpalatable substance such as dirt, kitty litter, or used coffee grounds.

The FDA notes flushing certain medicines may cause trace levels of drug residues in surface water, like rivers and lakes, and in some community drinking water supplies.

Step two: Place the mixture in a sealed container such as

trash.

Being trashy is not cool Instead of tossing unused medications in the garbage, the best alternative is to transfer unused medicines to collectors registered with the DEA. Authorized sites may be retail, hospital or clinic pharmacies, and law enforcement locations. Some offer mail-back programs or collection receptacles. 60 June 2016

a plastic bag.

Step three: Throw the empty container in your household Also, make sure you scratch out all personal information on the prescription label of your empty pill bottle or empty medicine packaging. You don’t want to be the victim of identity theft if someone goes dumpster diving.

Still not sure what to do? When in doubt, ask your pharmacist!

Protect Your Joints & Prevent Pain By MS

Joints play vital roles in the human body, forming the connections between bones and facilitating movement. Damage to the joints can be especially painful, and that damage may result from conditions such as osteoarthritis or gout. While not all joint pain is debilitating, the discomfort of joint pain is such that it’s wise for older adults to take steps to protect their joints with the hope of preventing joint pain down the road. Recognizing that joint pain can negatively affect quality of life, the Arthritis Foundation offers the following joint protection tips to men and women.

Forgo fashion with regard to footwear. When women choose their footwear, fashion should not be their top priority. According to the Arthritis Foundation, threeinch heels stress the feet seven times more than one-inch heels and heels put additional stress on knees, possibly increasing women’s risk for osteoarthritis. Though heels may be fashionable, the risk of developing joint pain is not worth making the fashion statement.

Get some green in your diet. A healthy diet pays numerous dividends, but many may not know that a healthy diet can help prevent joint pain. Green vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, kale and parsley are high in calcium and can reduce age-related bone loss while also slowing cartilage destruction.

Shed those extra pounds. If you start including more healthy vegetables in your diet, you might just start to lose a little weight as well. Such weight loss also can help your joints, as the AF notes that every extra pound a person gains puts four times the stress on his or her knees. The AF also notes that research has shown that losing as little as 11 pounds can reduce a person’s risk of osteoarthritis of the knee by 50 percent.

Hit the pool. Swimming is a great full-body workout and can be especially helpful to the joints. The buoyancy of water supports the body’s weight, reducing stress on the joints and minimizing pain as a result. If possible, swimmers already experiencing pain should swim in heated pools, which

Swimming is a great workout that can alleviate pain and reduce stress on the joints. can help relieve pain. While you can still benefit from swimming in pools with colder temperatures, cold water may not soothe the joints like warm water can.

Take breaks at work. Many people develop joint pain thanks to their jobs. If you spend all day sitting at a desk or standing on your feet, try to find a greater balance between the two. Joints can grow stiff from sitting all day, while standing throughout your work day can stress the joints. Take a short break every 30 minutes to stand up and walk around if you spend most of your day at a desk. If you stand a lot at your job, stop to sit down for a few minutes once every half hour. Joint pain and aging do not have to go hand in hand. More information about joint paint is available at www.arthritis.org. azhealthandliving.com | June 2016

The Basics on Long-Term Care Insurance Various insurance plans protect individuals from financial calamity. Insurance works by requiring policy holders to pay a premium. In the event of an accident or incident, a claim can be filed and the insurance company will reimburse the person for expenses, minus the deductible. Health insurance is one type of insurance that people have to manage their health and well-being. There’s also another, perhaps lesser-known insurance that can prove invaluable. It is called long-term care insurance. Long-term care insurance, or LTCI, is an insurance product that is found primarily in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. LTCI generally covers assisted living needs, home care, hospice care, adult daycare, and other requirements of senior living or health management. People who invest in LTCI are planning ahead for the times when they may no longer be able to care for themselves without assistance. LTCI will help offset the ever-rising costs associated with specialized senior housing and nursing facilities. Traditional health care insurance and governmentsponsored plans (i.e., Medicare in the U.S.) will not pay for daily, extended care services. The AARP notes that these other plans may only cover a short stay in a subacute rehabilitation center or nursing home, or pay for a limited amount of at-home care. LTCI can help families finance the cost of medical care when all other options will not. LTCI should be looked into as early as possible. People in poor health or already receiving long-term care services may not qualify for LTCI outright. But there are some workarounds, including buying a limited amount of coverage or coverage at a higher “nonstandard rate. Some policies do not require medical underwriting, and these may be advantageous to people with preexisting health conditions. When shopping for policies, look into how long LTCI will pay. Some policies include limits on how long or how 62 June 2016

Make the costs of various eldercare services more affordable through the purchase of longterm care insurance. much providers will pay for care, with some plans maxing out at two to five years. Other policies may not implement a term limit. Speak with a tax specialist as well, as premiums paid on a long-term care insurance products may be tax deductible. Long-term care insurance is a way for individuals to finance the often expensive costs for medical services that may be required as one ages.

Why Massage Therapy Benefits Seniors

People ages 65 and older represent a growing population. According to the most recent U.S. census data, about 14 percent of the U.S. population are seniors. The healthcare community continues to focus much of its attention on caring for seniors, keeping them healthy and managing long-term chronic disease and illness. While new treatments and medications are certainly part of the picture, sometimes alternative therapies such as massage therapy tend to be overlooked.

Change Your Thoughts. Change Your Words. Change Your World. Sponsored by

Massage therapy can provide both physical and mental relief for a number of common issues facing seniors today, including:

· Parkinson’s: Massage can help calm the nervous system and ease tremors and shaking. · Alzheimer’s and Dementia: The personal connection between a therapist and patient can provide a sense of physical and emotional comfort. · Arthritis and Osteoporosis: Heating up the muscles with massage can help increase range of motion and improve mobility and functionality for the client. · Cancer: Gentle touch can provide a great sense of relief to someone struggling with a potentially terminal illness such as cancer. What does this mean for massage therapists? For massage therapists, it is important not to forget about this important population and to learn more about their specific needs, just as you would any other population that often requires massage – think about athletes, expecting mothers, those who sit at a desk all day or have labor intensive jobs. The most important skill is the ability to tune into a person’s needs. Are they still active, but in pain? Do they long for human connection? Do they show signs of poor circulation or an overactive nervous system? There are also specific techniques that are commonly used with those 65 and older. For example, kneading and the application of light pressure on specific points is advised. Most therapists also incorporate stretching into massage for seniors, too. azhealthandliving.com | June 2016

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called friends, red lights called enemies, caution lights called family. You will have flats called jobs. But, if you have a spare called determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith and a driver named Jesus—you will make it to a place called success.” – Author Unknown
