Slim Down Before the Holidays! For many aging men and women, localized fat layers can be very difficult to “work off. Even with a regular exercise regimen and strict dietary factors, areas such as love handles, abdominal fat, and back fat can be stubborn to contour. Surgical liposuction may not be an option for many people due to cost, down time or anesthesia. Now there is another option, it is a breakthrough, non-invasive procedure that uses cooling technology that noticeably eliminates fat without surgery. That’s right, similar to liposuction; the fat cells are eliminated resulting in fewer fat cells all together. Using science developed by Harvard scientist and technology by Zeltiq, induces selective fat layer reduction without any damage to overlying skin. Once the fat cells are affected by the cooling, they are eliminated from the body over the course of the next 90 days. There is no subsequent change in blood lipid levels following the procedure is completely non-invasive; there is no cutting, no needles, and no anesthesia necessary. The procedure begins with the device being attached to the area of concern with a suction sensation, and then a cold sensation is felt for the first few minutes. The area will feel either numb or cold for the remainder of the hour. During the procedure patients typically read, watch a movie, use electronic devices, listen to music, or relax. More than one area may be treated in the same appointment time. Upon consultation, your provider will determine if you are a good candidate and number of sessions that will be required for desired results and contour. is FDA cleared for the flank area and proven to be safe and effective with minimal side effects reported to resolve completely. There may possibly be some temporary pain or discomfort and your provider will discuss more on what to expect during and following the procedure. Areas that may be treated include love handles, back fat, lower abdomen, and inner thigh. Each patient is individually assessed to determine number of treatments and expectations. Most patients require one to two treatments and see noticeable reduction of fat in the treated area after one visit. Some individuals may appreciate more fat reduction with additional treatments. The cost of the procedure ranges from $1500 to $3000 depending on number of treatments and number of areas being treated. Studies show elimination of visible fat maintained past two years. a Call now for an appointment to reduce those love handles or other problem areas before the holidays!

“Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.”~Jeremiah 17:14 Welcome to our October Issue. The bible tells us that death and life are in the power of the tongue—and it’s God’s will for us to be well, healthy and whole. Therefore, there is power released into our lives when we speak God’s word. I decree these bible verses encourage you to have faith, to start speaking—and get ready—healing is the power of the tongue!
Isaiah 55:11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
James 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
Luke 8:43-48 And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched. And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me. And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately. And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.
Luke 8:49-56 While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master. But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole. And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden. And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead. And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise. And her spirit came again, and
she arose straightway: and he commanded to give her meat. And her parents were astonished: but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done.
Matthew 8:5-17 And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour. And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever. And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them. When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.
Psalm 103:2-4 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Until next time,

Jokake Construction
Making Arizona a great place to live Jokake Construction has been part of the Valley business community for more than three decades. As a real estate service provider, Jokake Construction plans, coordinates, communicates and delivers construction and facilities services in and around environments where people are directly impacted. According to Maisha Christian Hagan, a director for Jokake Construction, the employee-owned company is about much more than construction. “Commercial real estate construction is our business but our purpose is really about people,” she explains. “We build the spaces where Arizonans work, learn, heal and play.” Jokake is embedded into the community they are helping to build. “We do a lot to give back to the community – whether through donations, projects, or supporting employees’ efforts with local nonprofits,” Hagan says. “We’re a company that values integrity. It’s not just important that we win, but it’s equally important how we win. When we work with clients, we’re not trying to bully them around. We’re about inspiring great ideas, building quality facilities and partnering with our clients to realize the best project possible. All-in-all it’s about making Arizona a great place to live and raise our families.” One popular event that Jokake Construction recently hosted was the annual Pinewood Derby that raised thousands of dollars for charities, including Fighting Fancy, a nonprofit organization that provides chemo bags to young women fighting breast cancer. They also have worked with the United Way and several other nonprofits, and have an ongoing project in the works with Family Promise of Greater Phoenix.
Like all long-lasting Valley businesses, Jokake has evolved over time to service various markets including health care, education, retail and hospitality. Hagan says that, under the original founders’ leadership, the company focused predominantly on office renovation projects. Fast-forward to today and they have grown to provide an array of construction services including development and construction management. To raise visibility of their breadth of services Jokake has implemented a new awareness campaign. “There is a misconception in the marketplace that Jokake ‘only does tenant improvement projects’ but this couldn’t be farther from the truth,” Hagan says. “The Breaking Ground campaign is to educate and inform the market that we have the experience and knowledge to execute new building construction.” For Valley residents on all sides of the Phoenix metro area there are several Jokake Construction projects that may be familiar. These include the Go Financial office in Mesa, Brophy’s practice gym in North Phoenix, and recent additions to the Peoria Sports Complex. “The stadium now has a new party deck, concessions areas, team store and stadium seating,” Hagan says about the West Valley project.

Pair of Young Mountain Lions at Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park By Dr. Grey Stafford
A pair of young mountain lions are on display at the popular baby animal nursery at Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park. The unrelated male and female have already bonded and will be a featured species in the 15-acre Adventureland expansion due to open in January. Mountain lions have more common names like puma and cougar than just about any other known species. This may be due to their extremely broad range through north and South America as well as the ability to adapt to almost any habitat (and elevation) from desert to forest. This will be the first set of mountain lions to go on permanent display in Wildlife World's 31-year history. Blue Line K9 Foundation
Dedicated to providing assistance to police K9 handlers and their families Blue Line K9 Foundation was established in 2014 after the loss of Valley police K9 Ronin, who was tragically shot and killed in the line of duty. The foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing assistance to police K9 handlers and their families in the event of a fallen or injured K9 or handler in the line of duty. The organization also provides financial assistance to handlers to cover or offset the costs of K9 training and equipment. “Most people don’t realize the time, effort and amount of money that goes into properly maintaining and training a police K9,” says Jessica Zygmont, founder and executive director of Blue Line K9 Foundation. “Police K9’s typically cost more than $60,000 during their service career and at times are funded only through donations, grants or solely by the handler.” The cause hits close to home because Ronin was the K9 partner of Zygmont’s husband, Valley police officer Wes Zygmont. “After Ronin’s death we received an outpouring of support from around the country,” Zygmont says. “People we never even met sent cards, flowers, and gifts but the question most people asked was, ‘how can I help and where can I donate?’”
“Although the foundation was started following the loss of K9 Ronin we don’t focus on the negative, instead we use our experiences to provide support to those who find themselves in a similar situation,” Zygmont continues. “We accomplish our mission by having dedicated volunteers throughout the community who help us raise awareness and support for our cause.” Since its inception, Blue Line K9 Foundation has raised more than $20,000. These funds have been used to support officers and their families during a time of need while also providing funds to put injured K9’s back to work. Future goals of the organization include providing financial support for training and equipment needs, providing retirement benefits to police K9’s and lobbying for tougher laws surrounding injuring or killing a police K9.

“In the future we are hoping to expand our foundation to include other types of first responder K9’s and handlers such as fire departments and military,” Zygmont says. “Also, right now we are working nationwide and would at some point like to go worldwide.” Blue Line K9 Foundation benefits from local and national fundraising events – and Zygmont wants supporters to know that their donations are streamlined directly to the cause.
wanted to be sure the money we were raising is all going out to handers and their K9’s.” Zygmont encourages those who are interested in supporting the cause to volunteer, donate, or spread the word about the group.
“I like to tell people our organization is all volunteers; there are no paid employees and we have very little overhead,” she notes. “When I started the foundation I

What is Metastatic Breast Cancer? Cancer is most treatable when caught in its earliest stages, when tumors may be small and contained. When a person is diagnosed with metastatic cancer, commonly known as stage 4 cancer, treatments are typically much more intensive. Metastatic cancer refers to cancer that has spread elsewhere from the point of origin. In terms of metastatic breast cancer, cancer cells may be detected beyond the breasts, most notably in the bones, lymph nodes, brain, and/or liver. Although much more invasive, metastatic cancer is not a hopeless situation. It simply requires a different course of treatment to fight the disease.
How does cancer spread? Almost all cancers can form metastatic tumors, or tumors that form in an area other than where the cancer started. The National Cancer Institute says cancer cells may initially invade nearby healthy tissue, replicating unhealthier, abnormal cells. Intravasation, or the moving of cancer cells into the walls of nearby lymph vessels or blood vessels, is also common. Once cancer cells are in this free-moving circulatory highway, they can reach other parts of the body. New cancer cells multiply and grow into small tumors in different locations. This proliferation of cancer tumors is called micrometastases. The ability for metastasis to occur depends on a variety of properties, including the body's immune system defenses. Just because cancer cells reach another area of the body that does not mean they will successfully grow and form a tumor. Metastatic cancer cells can lie dormant and not grow for years, if they grow at all.
Why is it still called breast cancer? If breast cancer spreads to the bones or lungs, it is not then referred to as bone or lung cancer. Metastatic cancer always takes the name of the first site where the cancer was discovered. When viewed microscopically, cancer cells that have spread generally look the same as the original cancer cells and have some of the same features in common.
What are the symptoms of metastatic breast cancer? Symptoms will vary depending on where the cancer has spread. If a tumor is small or growing slowly, there may be no symptoms at all. Metastases in the bones can cause pain or fractures. Cancer in the brain can cause headaches, vomiting, pressure and behavioral changes. Cancer that has moved to the liver can cause jaundice, which is a yellowing of the skin or eyes, and abnormally high enzymes in the liver. Any and all new symptoms should be discussed with a doctor. 26 October 2015| azhealthandliving.com
What are the treatment options? Metastatic cancer patients have many effective treatments at their disposal. According to BreastCancer.org, these treatments include systemic, or whole-body, treatment, localized treatment and pain relief. Whole-body treatments are usually advised when a cancer has a few metastases. Surgery or a targeted therapy may not be able to attack all of the cancer cells, including those that are not visible. Additional medications and therapies may be recommended to address specific symptoms. Radiation can target cancer cells in one location, while steroids or surgeries to stabilize bones or other areas may be necessary. Pain-relief medications are often prescribed to keep patients comfortable until the other treatments begin to take effect. Sleeping pills or medications to treat nausea may be prescribed if symptoms are bothersome. Despite all the advancements in metastatic breast cancer treatments, it is still possible for the cancer to spread. Experimental trials and new drugs still being studied may be recommended in particularly stubborn cases. A metastatic cancer diagnosis can be troubling, but men and women should not be hopeless. Educating oneself about metastatic cancer and learning about the various treatments can help people on their roads to recovery.
LesserKnown Symptoms of Breast Cancer By MS
Public perception that breast cancer is only identified by lumps detected through self-examination or routine mammography may prevent thousands of women from receiving an early diagnosis and the care they need. Although lumps are the most common symptom associated with the disease, women should recognize that breast cancer can produce additional symptoms. Breast-size changes: Many left and right breasts are not completely symmetrical, and women familiar with their bodies know that one breast is often slightly larger than the other. However, breast-size changes that occur out of the blue may be indicative of a medical problem. Skin rash or redness: Women who are breast-feeding can experience a rash on the breasts from an infection of breast tissue. But those who are not breast-feeding should be evaluated by a doctor if redness, irritation or rash appears. Nipple changes: Nipple discharge that starts suddenly and is not associated with breast-feeding can be indicative of cancer. Other changes to the nipples, such as pulling in of the nipple (inversion) or itchy, scaling skin on the nipple, should be brought to the attention of a doctor. Changes to the skin: Dimpling of the skin, peeling, flaking, or scaling skin can be a cause for concern as well. Lumps elsewhere: Cancerous tumors may not only be felt in the breasts. Breast cancer can spread to the lymph nodes around the breasts, and lumps may be felt under the arms. Unexplained pain: The Mayo Clinic advises that less than 10 percent of people diagnosed with breast cancer report pain as a symptom. But unexplained pain in an area of the breast should not be ignored. Breast pain that does not go away and seems to involve one area of the breast should be checked. Fatigue: General cancer symptoms can include unusual fatigue and unexplained weight loss. These symptoms should not be left unchecked. One of the best things women and men can do is to familiarize themselves with their bodies so they will be more capable of pinpointing any irregularities that may develop. But remember that hormonal breast changes occur during the menstrual cycle, so it's best to be familiar with how breasts look and feel both during and after menstruation. azhealthandliving.com |October 2015

Understanding Thyroid Cancer Women are most often diagnosed with thyroid cancer in their 40s and 50s, while men tend to be diagnosed in their 60s and 70s. Many people have detected lumps or swelling in their neck, only to visit their physicians and learn they have thyroid cancer. Though thyroid cancer is uncommon, the American Cancer Society estimates that more than 62,000 new cases of thyroid cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2015. And while the death rate from thyroid cancer is low compared with most other cancers, it is the most rapidly increasing cancer in United States. Such a reality only emphasizes the importance of learning about thyroid cancer and if there is anything you can do to lower your risk.
What is the thyroid? The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the front part of the neck that is made up of two main types of cells. Follicular cells use iodine from the blood to make the thyroid hormones that help regulate metabolism. Excessive thyroid hormones is described as "hyperthyroidism," which can cause irregular heartbeat, difficulty sleeping, nervousness, hunger, weight loss, and feelings of being too warm. Hypothyroidism occurs when a person has too little of the thyroid hormone, which can cause fatigue and weight gain and may lead to a person slowing down. The thyroid gland also is made up of C cells that produce the hormone calcitonin, which helps control how the body uses calcium.
What is thyroid cancer? Thyroid cancer occurs when cells in the thyroid gland grow abnormally and out of control. Papillary carcinoma is the most common form of thyroid cancer, accounting for roughly 8 out of 10 instances, according to the ACS. Papillary carcinomas typically grow very slowly, but they often spread to the lymph nodes in the neck. As common as papillary carcinomas are with regard to instances of thyroid cancer, they are rarely fatal. Follicular carcinoma is another form of thyroid cancer. Follicular carcinoma does not usually spread to the lymph nodes and is more common in countries where people do not get enough iodine in their diets. The prognosis for follicular carcinoma is very good, though slightly less so than papillary carcinoma. H端rthle cell carcinoma accounts for about 3 percent of thyroid cancers and is a variant follicular carcinoma. H端rthle cell carcinoma is harder to find and treat than other forms of thyroid cancer. 28 October 2015| azhealthandliving.com
Additional types of thyroid cancer include medullary thyroid carcinoma, anaplastic carcinoma, thyroid lymphoma and thyroid sarcoma.
Risk factors for thyroid cancer The following are a handful of risk factors that increase a person's risk of developing thyroid cancer. Gender: The ACS notes that women are at greater risk of developing thyroid cancer than men. Thyroid cancer occurs about three times more often in women than in men. Age: Thyroid cancer does not discriminate based on age, but women are most often diagnosed in their 40s and 50s while men tend to be diagnosed in their 60s and 70s. Diet: Areas of the world where diets are low in iodine have more cases of follicular carcinoma than areas, such as the United States, where iodine, which is typically added to table salt and other foods, is more likely to be a regular part of a person's diet. Radiation: According to the ACS, exposure to radiation is a proven risk factor for thyroid cancer. Head or neck radiation treatments during childhood increase a person's risk, though imaging tests such as X-rays and CT scans use low doses of radiation, making their connection to thyroid cancer risk unclear. More information on thyroid cancer is available at www.cancer.org/cancer/thyroidcancer.
Recognizing Cancers of the Eye & Eyelid By MS
Eye cancers are often first diagnosed during otherwise routine eye examinations. Cancer involves the uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in a particular part of the body. Cancer begins in one area, but it can invade or spread to other parts of the body if it goes undetected or untreated. Certain cancers are more familiar to the general public than others, thanks in part to awareness campaigns and charity fundraisers. But no area of the body, including the eyes and eyelids, is immune to cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, the most common type of eye cancer that affects adults is ocular melanoma, while children are more likely to experience retinoblastoma. Cancer can affect the three main parts of the eye, which include the eyeball, orbit and adnexal structures. The eyeball includes the sclera, uvea and retina. The orbit is the tissue surrounding the eyeball and the muscles that move the eye in different directions. Adnexal structures include the eyelids and the tear glands. Cancer that begins in the eyeball is known as intraocular cancer. Many cases of adnexal cancer, or cancer that affects the eyelid, may actually be skin cancer. In fact, MD Anderson Cancer center says more than 90 percent of eyelid cancers are basal cell carcinomas of the skin. Eye cancer may or may not produce symptoms, and any symptoms it does produce may be different based on the type of cancer present. Symptoms in adults may include: · A red or painful eye · blurred vision in one eye · Change in iris color or dark spots on the iris · Bulging of the eye · Floaters in the field of vision · Loss of peripheral vision Early signs of eye cancer are most often discovered by an eye doctor during routine eye examinations. A person who has any unusual changes in vision will want to visit an ophthalmologist promptly. Many cancers can be easily diagnosed by a trained physician, and early detection can improve prognosis. The ACS estimates that, in 2015, there will be 2,580 new cancers (mainly melanomas) of the eye and orbit - 1,360 in men and 1,220 in women. Treatments for eye cancers are similar to the options for cancers that begin elsewhere. Surgery, radiation therapy, laser therapy, chemotherapy, and other targeted therapies may be used alone or in conjunction with another depending on the type of eye cancer present. Every step will be taken to improve health and reduce the effects of treatment on vision. azhealthandliving.com |October 2015

MIND, BODY & spirIT By Amrita Maat, a nurse, child abuse survivor, and author of Wearing a Mask Called Normal
Healing After Abuse From child abuse and domestic violence to human sex trafficking and atrocities against civilians in war-torn countries, our world creates new victims daily. Broken bones and bruises heal, but for many victims, the emotional damage is lifelong and life altering. Experiencing abuse can affect how you feel about yourself and how you respond to other people. These effects might be easy to see if you’re observing them in someone else, but they can be nearly impossible to recognize in yourself without help. Lifestyle changes that involve healthy choices include eliminating dysfunctional patterns, such as manipulation and abusive behavior – the things children of abusive parents learn from their role models. A healthy lifestyle comes first through recognizing unhealthy behaviors and then laying the groundwork for positive change. That groundwork begins with forgiveness. You have to forgive. You have to forgive yourself and you have to forgive those who’ve hurt you. When you’re a victim, you’re often angry – because you have every right to be angry, right? But anger, focusing on blame and thinking of yourself as a victim only perpetuates the dysfunction and the pain it brings. So, how does one begin to forgive oneself and others? Here are a few steps:
1. Identify the people who have caused you pain and why you feel that pain. This validates your pain; it was real and deserves to be acknowledged. 2. Identify the pain you feel from others and consciously release it to the universe in a personal ritual that has meaning for you. You might write it down on a piece of paper and burn it. Or speak the words out loud and blow them away. 3. Allow yourself to forgive those who have caused you pain as a means to your physical, emotional and spiritual healing. 30

4. Identify the people you have caused pain and recognize why you caused them pain. It’s important to acknowledge that you, too, are capable of causing pain in order to forgive yourself and those you’ve hurt. 5. Identify the pain you have caused others with your actions. 6. Allow yourself forgiveness for the pain you have caused others as a means to your physical, emotional and spiritual healing. While forgiving others for hurt caused intentionally is difficult, Maat says the hardest is forgiving yourself for pain you caused. But this is vital; in order to forgive others and to open yourself to positive energy, you must forgive yourself. From every hurtful moment, I learned something, and part of my process is to acknowledge each lesson and to be grateful for it. Forgiveness was possible when I released the hurt because it no longer served a purpose.
How ‘Thinspiration’ is Killing the Self-Esteem of Young Girls By Stacey Rowcliffe, author of Female Fusion: Different Flowers from the Same Garden
Conventional thinking has flown out the window for advertisers who want to attract women to their product, according to a new report from the University of Manitoba and University of Michigan. The report is based off three studies that conclude blatant, in your face content featuring thin, young models actually turn off a woman’s desire for the product; subjects saw the pitch as too transparent. This recognition alerted an individual’s defense mechanism, which actually boosted self-esteem. But when and an idealized model was used to sell a product with more subtlety, subjects were more prone to want the product and be the woman in the advertisement. So, this study has some mixed good news, but there’s still an avalanche of negativity pulling down our girls and young women. According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, roughly 70 percent of girls in middle and high school, and even as young as fifth grade, say idealized images of women in magazines guide their sense of the perfect body. Here are three perspectives in which older women may offer advice to girls and young women:
Past pains shape character and provide inner strength. Many people may think of Christina Aguilera as a pampered pop diva; however, in reality, she has worked hard and endured a difficult home life as a small child. As a 10-year-old, she had already gained a reputation as a little girl with a big voice. Later, after having become a worldfamous celebrity, she cited domestic violence in her home as a reason for her enduring drive and passionate voice. Just as muscle is developed and built with tension, so too challenging situations builds and defines character.
are drastically different. Additionally, cosmetic surgery plays upon the fears of young and beautiful women who still feel the need to implement botox, breast implants, facelifts, nose lifts, cellulite removal, tummy tucks, butt implants and the like. Women were created to be beautiful; once that is realized her inner beauty will shine.
Keeping it real. Young women need to understand that
not only shapes the relationships between you and other human beings; it shapes the relationship you have with yourself! The above points – accepting past pain and being honest with yourself and others – are intimately linked to your relationship with others. How you treat others is a measure of who you are. If you are obsessed with trying to be the prettiest and thinnest girl in class, it’s a clear sign you are not comfortable in your own skin.
much of what is seen on television and Internet ads, billboards and in magazines has been altered far beyond what is real. Tips to Maintain Balance from Depression It’s no wonder nearly one in 10 Americans suffers from depression. According to Centers for Disease Control Study, top risk factors include being unable to work or unemployed; having no health insurance; suffering from obesity. Unfortunately, those topics have dominated headlines for the past five years. What’s worse, by 2020, the World Health Organization estimates depression will be second most debilitating disease worldwide. These negative emotions along with sustained, excessive stress can lead to depression, which now overshadows other problems for which patients seek help at his clinic. Depression can be rooted in a number of problems, and those need to be addressed – simply taking a pill is not usually effective treatment. Anger, fear, and guilt can all be underlying causes, even when the person isn’t aware he’s experiencing those feelings. A holistic treatment approach, which may or may not include medication, helps people overcome a bout of the debilitating illness, and learn techniques to manage it themselves, he says. People at risk of depression can work at maintaining their emotional equilibrium by counterbalancing negative feelings with optimism, hope and joy. This is most effective if they do this holistically, addressing the four main categories of human need. By purposefully feeding the intellectual, relational, physical, and spiritual aspects of your life positive emotions, you can achieve balance. Here are a few suggestions:
Intellectual: Be aware of what you’re feeding to your mind. Try reading a positive, uplifting book, and setting aside time in your day to fill yourself up intellectually with constructive, encouraging messages. Be aware of what you are reading and listening to, and seek to counter the negative input we all get with positive influences. Relational: Think of a person you really enjoy talking to, someone who makes you feel good about yourself or who’s just fun to be around. Plan today to spend time with that person this week, even if it’s just for a moment or two. 32 October 2015| azhealthandliving.com
Make the effort to verbalize your appreciation for his or her positive presence in your day.
Physical: Physical activity is a wonderful way of promoting emotional health. Engage in some mild exercise this week. Take a walk around the neighborhood. Stroll through a city park. The goals are to get your body moving and to allow you to focus on something other than yourself and your surroundings. Greet your neighbors, stop at the park and watch someone playing with his dog, or cheer at a Little League game. Intentionally open up your focus to include the broader world around you.
Spiritual Support: Take some time to nourish your spirit. If you are a member of a religious organization, make sure to attend services this week. If you are not, listen to some religious or meditative music. Spend time in quiet reflection, meditation or prayer. Intentionally engage in an activity that replenishes and reconnects your spirit. If you are not depressed but feel anxious and stressed, have trouble sleeping or find your not content much of the time, it’s time to start taking care of yourself. Depression is painful and as debilitating as any other disease. Take steps to de-stress your life and to work on emotional balance before it gets worse.

A dry mouth causes excess plaque buildup and increases decay. Dry mouth also causes discomfort for denture wearers and those with partials. A. I’ve been practicing acupuncture for over
two decades and have treated thousands of patients suffering from all sorts of conditions. I’ve also studied hundreds of different systems of acupuncture: I even spent time in Russia learning about laser acupuncture. One question that always comes up when I treat patients using acupuncture is, “how does acupuncture work?”
When the theories of acupuncture were formulated centuries ago, they were based on the metaphysical concept of moving energy throughout the body. More recently, brain researchers have been using science to explain how acupuncture works. One technique used to study acupuncture is a special type of MRI, which can actually show the brain “lighting up” in response to acupuncture. These studies called, fMRI scans, have allowed scientists to study ancient theories of acupuncture. Some traditional acupuncture applications have merit, but many classical acupuncture applications fail the science test. That is why I use only those acupuncture applications that are proven to “light-up” the nervous system. This form of modern scientific acupuncture is called neuro (pertaining to the nervous system) anatomical (based on medical anatomy) acupuncture. Applying acupuncture based on neuroscience rather than folklore offers patients the best opportunity for them to obtain good results. Acupuncture has a decent track record for helping patients, applying scientific validated modern techniques of acupuncture based on fMRI scans takes the guesswork out of acupuncture practice. The merging of neuroscience with acupuncture is bringing this ancient art into 21st century medicine. That is surely, great news for patients!

Q. What safe and affordable treatment options are there for sinus pain?
A. A large portion of the U.S. population
actually suffers from Sinus problems ranging from sinus pain to sinus infections and their related symptoms. According to Mayo Clinic Proceedings posted for 2011 an estimated 1 in 7 adults experience sinus problems while statistical data the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers from 2012 there were 28.5 million people diagnosed with sinusitis. More recently, the Asthma and Allergy Association gives a 2014-based forecast that 37 million people experience at least one sinusitis episode each year. Sinus pain can present itself in many forms such as jaw pain, upper teeth pain, eye pain, face pain, the feeling of pressure around the eyes, face and back of the skull. And yes, sinus pain can cause headaches that can blow up into migraines if not handled effectively. Many patients with sinus pressure or sinus pain are misdiagnosed as to its cause. This occurs when there are no symptoms of congestion, which is considered unusual but not impossible. There are safe, effective and affordable treatment options. Consider having soft tissue release performed for the base of the skull area and gentle sinus cavitations performed along the frontal sinus regions. This sinus release protocol is performed multiple times consecutively in an office visit to promote sinus drainage and much needed circulation along the face sinus and base of skull tissues. This sinus release/drainage technique, when performed correctly, can be non-invasive, effective, productive and affordable.

Q. There is a bone spur shown on my X-ray; could that be the cause of my heel pain?
A. This is a common question patients usually
ask as they come in with their X-ray. Yes, bone spurs have been blamed for heel pain. On the X-ray, the spur appears to project out and place pressure on the heel, but today studies have found that bone spurs are typically not a cause of heel pain. Heel pain usually develops gradually, and it may start suddenly in some cases, patients could feel pain start when they move. A typical scene is in the morning when getting out of bed, a sharp pain starts after first few steps or when placing weight on the foot. Heel pain is related to chronic conditions such as arthritis, pinched nerve root around the foot. A common cause seen in clinic is called plantar fasciitis, which is the inflammation of the fibrous tissue also known as plantar fascia covering the heel pad and bottom of the foot. When you stand, walk with weight on, the stretch force irritate the inflammation of the plantar fascia. As a protective mechanism, your body starts the compensation process, calcium starts accumulating inside the heel during activity, and that’s how spurs generate. Risk factors such as overweight, improper footwear, injury, and aging process could increase risk of plantar fasciitis. Although plantar fasciitis tends to develop with age as the arch of the foot start to sag, it’s commonly seen in any age group. Fortunately, most of our patients with plantar fasciitis show very good results with conservative treatment. Gentle massage of the foot arch combined with physical modality such as ultrasound help manage this inflammatory pain. There is a technique called the acupoint “Tui Na” that manipulates the meridian channel around the ankle to calm down the pain. Again prevention is necessary for reducing causes of plantar fasciitis, this includes gentle stretching of the foot arch and calf muscle, appropriate foot wear or arch support, and avoiding walking barefoot on uneven ground.

Q. What is a lasting facelift? A. Even with today’s health-conscious
lifestyle many people still lament that their faces do not reflect their youthful attitudes.
The effects of aging and years of sun damage are finally catching up to them. Their skin begins to loosen, crow’s feet begin to appear, and fine lines have now become deeper folds. Jawlines soften into jowls and beneath the chin, another chin or vertical folds appear at the front of the neck. Let’s face it it’s not a pretty sight. Fortunately many plastic surgery procedures can restore a fresher-looking appearance and improve the visible signs of aging, offering long-term results. A Lasting Facelift is the most effective approach for treating facial wrinkles, and sagging of the face and neck caused by aging. A facelift removes excess skin, tightens underlying tissues and muscle, and redrapes the skin on the face and neck. It can correct mid-face sagging, marionette lines, jowls and a double chin, maintaining its reputation as the ‘gold standard’ for facial rejuvenation. Other rejuvenation procedures typically performed in conjunction with a facelift are a brow lift, to correct sagging or deeply furrowed brows, and an eyelid surgery to rejuvenate aging eyes. Your genes, skin quality, and maintenance routine are important factors in the longevity of your facelift, but the facelift technique is the number one factor in determining how long the result will last, which can be about five to 10 years. Before you consider any cosmetic procedure, discuss your goals and expectations with a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the only Board recognized by the prestigious American Board of Medical Specialties. – Dr. Rod Dermacare Cosmetic Surgery 602.680.5348
Q. Why do I need a colonoscopy? A. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the U.S. amongst men and women, and the second leading cause of cancer related death overall. One in 20 Americans will suffer colorectal cancer that is about 5 percent of the National population. In this week, alone 19 people will lose their fight with colon cancer in Arizona. It is estimated that over 50 thousand deaths will occur from colorectal cancer this year. That is a staggering amount when you consider how highly treatable and curable the disease is in its early stages. Risks include anyone over the age of 40 at which point the risk of the disease doubles every 10 years. Ninety percent of all colorectal cancers will occur over the age of 50. Men are twice more likely to get the disease over women. People with first-degree relatives (parents/sibling/offspring) who have colon cancer have 2-3 time increased risk of developing the disease. Symptoms can include rectal bleeding or a change in bowel habits such as diarrhea or constipation. Unfortunately, many polyps and cancers will fail to produce any symptoms at all. Early detection is key for most colorectal cancers start as polyps. These small polyps are detectable via colonoscopy and highly treatable at this stage for they allow for removal before transforming into cancer. There are over a million colorectal cancer survivors in the U.S. If every one 50 years or older had a colonoscopy screening, as many as 80 percent of cancer deaths could be prevented.

Q. Can diet affect inflammation and Q. Why is hearing loss such a hard thing Q. How can I tighten aging skin, reduce cellulite, and lose inches by the Holidays? to accept? pain? A. Considerable scientific information and clinical observation have accumulated in recent years showing that chronic pain–particularly the debilitating, severe form requiring opioid treatment–needs a “chronic pain" diet. It is important to involve a multidisciplinary treatment approach to treating chronic pain. Part of this may include nutritional counseling. Diet-induced pro-inflammatory mediator release can contribute to dietary injury. For example, a pro-inflammatory diet may include foods with a hyperglycemic index/load, such as bread and refined sugar. In addition, foods that are high in omega 6 fatty acids such as corn, sunflower, safflower, and peanut oils create more inflammation. Other factors include trans-fatty acids, low magnesium intake, low potassium intake, low phytonutrient intake, low inflammatory gut microbiota, and low serum levels of vitamin D. Conversely the anti-inflammatory diet group would include fish, lean meats, skinless chicken, omega 3 eggs, vegetables, fruit, sweet potatoes, raw nuts, dark chocolate, red wine and stout beer, coffee and tea, ginger, turmeric, garlic and other spices as well as olive oil, coconut oil and butter.
A. The stigma associated with hearing loss can be a big obstacle for individuals who need hearing aids. Some are afraid to take the next step because of how they think others may view them. Negative stereotypes have followed hearing loss for years. In the past, perceptions of hearing loss were associated with old age, poor communicators, social awkwardness, and low cognition. As education and research have become more abundant, the negative stigma associated with hearing loss is changing.
A. With the aging process comes the realization that body changes and problem areas that seem to worsen year after year are inevitable. While many people may be displeased with their body image, not many are willing to risk aggressive or painful procedures to get results. Diet, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle should always be a starting point, but sometimes results are desired more quickly, and often times a "clean-up" is necessary, to tighten skin or contour after a significant amount of weight loss. There are a number of non-invasive and highly effective procedures available to individuals that will enable them to achieve their desired results with no downtime Hearing loss not only affects those who are and little discomfort.
older in age; it affects infants, children, teens, and adults. Technology has helped to identify newborns with hearing loss within hours of being born. In the past, you wouldn’t see a toddler walking around with hearing aids; now they are. Allowing the stigma of hearing loss to interfere with treatment is detrimental to the individual who has the hearing problem. Hearing loss is an invisible impairment. When concealed, individuals become increasingly withdrawn. It can also lead them on a path to depression.
Laser body contouring has been available for many years and continues to improve each year; this combined with other types of body contouring procedures can achieve significant results. If de-bulking is necessary or if large areas of fat are present, fat cell freezing with CoolSculpting® is recommended, first. Often this will produce desired results, if adequate treatments are performed. When problem areas are in the lower portion of the body, such as thighs and knees, or small areas like arms are the focus, then laser skin tightening and circumferential reduction is favored.
Overcoming the stigma of hearing loss is tough. If you have untreated hearing loss, try to observe how it is affecting you at home, work, or in leisure time. Weigh the pros and cons of hearing better vs. missing out on conversation. Identify emotions that Although diet may have an influence, it is hold you back from getting treatment. The newest laser device that achieves this is the FDA cleared VelaShape™ Ill. This powerful deep thermal energy irons out cellulite, tightens skin, and reduces size in just about three treatments with no downtime. It is a comfortable, deep therapeutic body contouring treatment that delivers updated enhanced clinical protocols, offering consistent results that can be reproduced time after time. CoolSculpting and VelaShape III may be combined for even more amazing changes. Other devices, such as fractional R F Sublative lasers can be added to erase stretch marks or smooth knee wrinkles. BE PRESENT
FAMILY, KIDS & RELATIONSHIPS By Cindy “Rodeo” Steedle, founder of No Bullying Now and co-creator and Executive Producer of the 2015 Taste of Speed Jet Port Experience
No More Bullying New laws, media attention and public awareness campaigns have placed a greater emphasis on bullying in recent years than perhaps ever in the nation’s history. Yet bullying remains a stubborn problem with far-reaching effects. More than one in four students, 27.8 percent, report being bullied during the school year, according to a 2103 report by the National Center for Educational Statistics, but most victims never tell an adult. That’s one reason it’s crucial that everyone – not just school officials – get involved in the battle. The impact of bullying can be devastating. A 2012 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said students who experience bullying are at increased risk for depression, anxiety, sleep difficulties and poor school adjustment. Bullying is bad for the bullies, as well. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that students who bully others are at increased risk for substance use, academic problems, and violence later in adolescence and adulthood. How many times have each of us witnessed an act of bullying and said little or nothing? After all, it wasn’t our responsibility. If our kid wasn’t involved, we figured, it’s none of our business. Keys to facing up to bullying and doing something about it.
No one should make excuses for bullies. Some
need to recognize the depth of the problem, and implement and enforce strong anti-bullying policies.
But the problem goes beyond the schoolhouse doors. If we want to eradicate bullying in our communities,
people claim bullying is simply a part of life. If no one is physically hurt, they will say, “What’s the big deal? It’s just boys being boys and girls being girls.” Those people are wrong. We must make it clear in our actions and our words that bullying will not be tolerated.
we can’t rely on schools alone. All public and private institutions need to do more to demonstrate that bullying is simply unacceptable in our workplaces and in our homes.
Parents should monitor their children’s cellphone and Internet use. Bullying takes many forms and it’s
This is not a failure of one group of kids, one school, one town, one county or one geographic area. Rather, it exposes a fundamental flaw in our society, one that has deep-seated roots.
not always in person. Text messages and social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter can become sources of bullying.
Schools must be at the forefront of the battle. Too many schools don’t take bullying seriously. School officials 44 October 2015

Until now, it has been too difficult, inconvenient — maybe even painful — to address. But we can’t keep looking away. We have to stand up and say, ‘No more!’ It’s up to us all to get more involved.
The Dangers of Leaving Kids in Cars By MS
Children require a lot of care and constant supervision when they are young. Such is the reason reports of children being left in cars are so surprising and generate so much outrage. Many parents would never intentionally put their youngsters in harm's way, but leaving a child in an unattended vehicle even if it's just for a few minutes - can be incredibly dangerous. Many states even consider such behavior a crime. Since 1998, 611 children have died from hyperthermia, or heat stroke, which resulted from the kids having been left in hot cars. Consumer Reports notes that more than 50 percent of those deaths were children under the age of 2. Heat is not the only danger children face when left in cars. Cold cars can be equally dangerous. Young children cannot regulate their body temperature very well. The University of Rochester Medical Center says babies can't adjust to temperature changes as well as adults, and infants can lose heat rapidly, nearly four times faster than adults. Healthy newborns may not be able to keep their bodies warm if the environment around them is too cold. On cold, snowy days, babies may need a constant flow of heat in the car to remain comfortable. Weather and temperature are not the only dangers kids face when left alone in cars. Strangulation from safety belts, entrapment in doors and windows and falls from open windows also may occur when kids are left in cars unsupervised. Some dexterous children may climb into the driver's seat and engage the gearshift, causing the vehicle to move. Abduction is another potential danger, as unattended children in cars are potential targets for kidnappers. Never leave a child unattended in a car. Parents prone to forgetfulness can put a stuffed animal on the front seat to serve as a reminder that they have kids in tow or place a purse or wallet on the backseat so they must look in the back of the car before exiting their vehicles. azhealthandliving.com |October 2015

DECORATE & IMPROVE
By MS
Discover the Ways to Fireproof a Home A house fire can engulf and destroy a home in a matter of minutes. Even with the fast-acting response of firefighters, a home that has caught fire may be irreparably damaged by flames, soot and water. Fire is no laughing matter, and it behooves homeowners to take precautions to fireproof their homes as much as possible. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that although death and injuries caused by residential fires have declined gradually during the past several decades, fire-related deaths continue to pose a significant health hazard. In 2013, it is estimated that someone died in a fire every 162 minutes in the United States alone. A person was injured by fire every 33 minutes, according to the National Fire Protection Association, Fire Analysis and Research Division. Most fires are largely preventable. The following are a few fireproofing measures for safety-conscious homeowners.
Install smoke detectors and check the batteries regularly. Smoke inhalation causes many fire-related deaths.
A smoke detector should be installed outside of every bedroom and on every level of the house. Don't install a smoke detector near a window, door or forced-air register, where drafts could interfere with the detector's operation. Be sure to routinely check that every smoke detector is working properly.
Have a fire extinguisher in an easily accessible location. Ideally, there should be a fire extinguisher in every
room of the home, but at the least keep one wherever fire is used regularly, such as a kitchen or by a fireplace. Ensure the fire extinguisher is charged and that you understand how to operate it.
Remove combustible materials from around the house. Do not allow old clothing, rags, newspapers, or
cardboard boxes to accumulate around the house. Discard newspapers and magazines as quickly as possible and be careful to avoid storing anything too close to heaters, furnaces or electrical equipment.
Adhere to the recommended wattage in lamps and lighting fixtures. Do not exceed the recommended bulb wattage for lights around the house. There may be overheating or shorting that can lead to fire.
Look for fireproof interior decor items. Nowadays,
carpeting and furniture can be coated with fireproof chemicals. The added investment may be worth it in the long run. 46 October 2015 | azhealthandliving.com
Do not leave candles unattended. Many people like the look and aroma that candles provide. Candles also provide emergency illumination in the event of a power outage. Candles can be easily knocked over and start a fire. In fact, candles are one of the top causes of house fires. Never leave a candle unattended, even for a short amount of time. And certainly never go to sleep without extinguishing a candle.
Keep the chimney clean. Inspect the chimney flue regularly and have it cleaned to prevent an abundance of residual burnt material from accumulating. This creosote can catch fire itself.
Use a fire-resistant roofing material. A roof should be made from metal, clay or asphalt tiles. Trim any overhanging branches or vegetation to reduce the amount of combustible material nearby.
Have a fire-safe wall behind wood heaters. A brick wall or another fireproof material should be used on any walls that house a wood- or gas-burning appliance for added safety.
Verify electrical safety. Extension cords and power strips should be kept to a minimum, and the outlets should not be overloaded. Replace fuses properly and don't be afraid to call a certified electrician to verify you are correctly set up. By making a few tweaks in and around the house, a homeowner can decrease the likelihood of a fire.
Operate Garage Doors Safely
By MS
A garage door is an oft-overlooked part of a home. Some are rarely opened, while others are used on a daily basis. Though they might be overlooked, garage doors play a role in thousands of injuries every year. Roughly 20,000 people each year are treated in hospital emergency rooms for injuries related to garage doors, says the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The majority of injuries happen at a person's own home. Although children are more susceptible to garage door injuries, these injuries can happen to people of all ages. That is why it is wise for all members of the family to familiarize themselves with how to prevent garage door injuries.
Crushing concerns. Safety experts from many organizations,
including CPSC, estimate the average garage door weighs more than 400 pounds. A door of that weight can break bones and crush adults and children alike. There are many reasons a door can fall, including lost tension, improper installation or a faulty track or springs. A garage door may become faulty if it was hit by an automobile and not mended correctly. Many different manufacturers have created safety features that can be installed on garage doors to control the speed of descent and automatically stop a garage door should it be involved in a free fall. There also are features that retract the door should it meet with an obstacle on the ground when the door is closing.
on the track and a closed design that does not enable fingers to be trapped between rolling mechanisms and the garage door track.
Open joints in door. Most standard garage doors are
made by fitting several panels together to create a solid door. This allows for the bending motion of the door when it is retracted. Gaps between these panels, called joints, can trap fingers or toes, resulting in anything from pinching to amputations. Shoppers may want to consider a door that guards against open joints with protective features that do not allow finger entry between joints.
Other safety precautions
Unsafe ride-along. Some children and teenagers think it is entertaining to ride on the garage door when it is automatically being opened. The kids let go before the door reaches the header of the garage. Unfortunately, many children are not as lucky and can become trapped between the garage door and the small space at the ceiling of the garage. Others may have hands or feet become stuck between the folding panel joints of the door, resulting in breaks or amputations.
• Do not leave the garage door partially open. When it is reactivated, it first may travel downward before retracting back upward.
Children should be advised never to ride on an opening garage door. Some automatic garage door opener manufacturers have begun developing safety systems that shut down the operation of the door if a sensor measures extra weight on the garage door.
• Do not let young children play in the garage unattended. Not only can a garage door be a hazard, but also carbon monoxide poisoning in the garage is another serious concern.
Sharp edges. Tracks on standard garage doors are frequently
made of sharp-edged metal and have numerous open holes in the construction that are tempting for little fingers. Cuts have occurred to both children and adults in and around tracks. Look for garage doors that have rounded-out edges
• Test the auto-reversing feature of the garage door monthly by placing a roll of paper towels beneath the door. If the door does not reverse upon contact with the towels, have the door repaired or replaced.
• Regularly clean the working parts of the garage door to ensure safe operation. • Do not try to fix garage door problems on your own. Serious injuries can ensue when the torque on springs and other mechanisms are adjusted improperly on high-tension parts. azhealthandliving.com | October 2015

How to Get Enough Protein on a Vegetarian Diet With a balanced diet, vegetarians can get the protein they need. One of the first questions vegetarians are asked when acknowledging their dietary preferences is, "Are you getting enough protein?" Many people assume it's impossible to consume sufficient protein on a diet that consists largely of fruits and vegetables. But many vegetarians get the protein their bodies need. Many people are overly concerned with protein intake, eating more than they really need to meet health requirements. The Recommended Daily Allowance of protein in the United States is 0.36 grams of protein for every pound a person weighs. Many people need less protein than they think, which is likely one reason many non-vegetarians eat roughly one-third more protein than vegetarians. The Vegetarian Resource Group says there are no distinct health advantages to consuming a diet high in protein.
How protein works The body digests protein into amino acids to fuel its activity and aid in tissue repair. There are 20 different amino acids in food, but the human body can only make 11 of them. Your body cannot synthesize essential amino acids, which must come from your diet. The nine essential amino acids, which cannot be produced by the body, must be obtained strictly from food. Foods that contain all of the amino acids necessary are called "complete protein sources." Many animal products are great sources of complete protein, but complete protein also can be found in plant-based foods. One food that is a complete protein source is the soybean. Other plant-based foods may not be complete proteins by themselves, but when eaten together, can complement one another to provide all the necessary amino acids. For example, combining beans and legumes with certain grains, seeds, and nuts is a way to get the protein one needs. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine says that intentionally combining foods at strict ratios is not necessary. As long as your diet contains a variety of foods, many protein needs are easily met. 48 October 2015 | azhealthandliving.com
With a balanced diet, vegetarians can get the protein they need. Less protein healthier? Many fad diets point to high protein sources for weight loss and improved athletic performance. But reports published in journals like Nutrition and Cancer and the American Journal of Epidemiology indicate high intake of protein, particularly animal protein, may be linked to osteoporosis, cancer and impaired kidney function. Eating a healthy, moderate amount of protein, such as that in vegetarian or vegan diets, can be beneficial. Many vegetarians need not worry about their protein intake. As long as diets include plenty of grains, legumes, nuts, fruits and vegetables, vegetarians can meet their bodies' protein needs.
Simple Ways to Maintain Liver Health By MS
The liver is the body's largest internal organ, responsible for processing substances that enter the body and acting as a filtering system that is essential to eliminating toxic substances. What's more, the liver produces proteins, clotting factors, enzymes and hormones essential to health. Considering how integral a properly functioning liver can be, one can see just how vital it is to maintain a healthy liver. Unfortunately, many of the foods, beverages, and medications people consume on a regular basis can affect both liver health and the overall health of the body. But men and women can take several steps to ensure their liver stays healthy.
Avoid excessive consumption of alcohol. Overconsumption of alcohol damages the liver. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, the liver is the primary site of alcohol metabolism. Over time, excessive drinking can damage the liver. It is best to keep your drinking to a minimum, for the health of your liver and a variety of other reasons. Quit smoking. Every time you smoke, you are putting more than 60 different chemicals into your body. At some point, cigarette smoke will be handled by the liver. Cigarette smoke can decrease the amount of oxygen that red blood cells carry to the vital organs of the body, including the liver. Over time, this can result in damage to the liver known as cirrhosis. In addition, the American Cancer Society notes that some studies have found a link between smoking and liver cancer. However, this relationship is difficult to discern because smokers also tend to be more likely to drink alcohol.
Eat healthier. A healthy diet that includes an array of fresh fruits and vegetables is good for the liver. Vegetables are excellent sources of fiber, which helps toxins move quickly through the digestive system without putting stress on the liver. Sulfur-rich foods, such as garlic and onions, can help detoxify environmental toxins that end up in the body. Turmeric, licorice, and cinnamon may also support healthy liver function.
Exercise caution with medications. Certain medications can tax the liver, especially when medications are mixed with other substances. Even seemingly, innocuous medications, like acetaminophen, can cause potential liver damage over time.
Limit exposure to toxins. Men and women can choose organic foods whenever possible to cut down on the amount of chemical residue they consume. Even switching over to natural household cleaning products can reduce the number of chemicals you are exposed to, and reducing that exposure can ultimately protect the liver.
Drink more water and exercise regularly. Fresh water helps flush toxins out of the body, helping the liver by not making it work so hard. In addition, exercising and sweating detoxifies the body. While exercising and after working out, replace lost fluids with clean, healthy water.
Steer clear of overly processed foods. Processed foods contain more chemicals, which can put more pressure on the liver. Sweetening agents, preservatives, and other substances can be particularly detrimental to liver health.
Sip green tea. Green tea is full of antioxidants known as catechins, which have been shown to improve the functions of the liver. azhealthandliving.com | October 2015

FEEL GOOD & REJUVENATE
By Ms
Control Uneven Skin Pigmentation Uneven skin tone is a common, relatively harmless condition that affects millions of people. Hyperpigmentation (darkened areas) and hypopigmentation (lightened areas) are examples of uneven skin tone conditions that people often hope to alleviate. Changes in skin tone can affect people of all ages and races. Some of the more widely known skin tone changes are the formation of freckles and age spots. The American Osteopathic College of Dermatology advises that lightened or darkened patches of the skin can occur anywhere on the body and are usually the result of exposure to the sun. Melanin is produced by the skin as a protective agent. When skin is exposed to UV radiation, melanin absorbs the sun's rays and darkens the skin to reduce instances of burns and other damage. Excessive melanin can produce darkened areas that are disproportionate to other parts of the skin. In cases where skin tone already is uneven, sun exposure can exacerbate the situation. Some skin tone abnormalities are hereditary, while others may result from hormonal issues during pregnancy. People may experience such abnormalities after a skin injury, while others may experience some instances as a natural response to skin inflammation. One of the easiest and most effective ways to alleviate pigmentation issues is to apply a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 each day. Look for a product that blocks both UVA and UVB light. Sunscreen needs to be reapplied at regular intervals, especially when spending prolonged time outdoors. Exfoliation of the skin may promote faster shedding of the exterior layers of the skin. Stores carry many at-home exfoliating kits and creams. However, if you are unsure which types of products are best for your skin, consult with a dermatologist. Dermatologists may prescribe lightening creams that will slowly lighten darkened skin. Malasma is an uneven pigmentation that can occur on the face and may be a side effect of hormonal imbalances caused by pregnancy, menopause, or use of oral contraceptives. 50 October 2015 | azhealthandliving.com
Dermatologists can advise about the various treatment options to alleviate uneven skin pigmentation issues. Melasma can clear up on its own after pregnancy, but if it is linked to contraceptive use, speak with a doctor about changing the pill to using another method of contraception to see if it alleviates the problem. Makeup may be used to mask any irregularities in skin tone until another treatment method is found. If topical treatments do not work, chemical peels, microdermabrasion or laser treatments may work. But such treatments should only be administered under the guidance of a qualified doctor. Skin pigmentation problems can be embarrassing. Reducing sun exposure and covering up can typically alleviate many cases of hyperpigmentation, but there are other options available as well. Speak with a dermatologist if you have concerns about uneven skin tone.
Fall & Winter Style Trends to Add to Your Wardrobe

Duster coats and ponchos could be seen at all the major
runway shows. These coats are equally comfortable tossed over casual wear, such as a sweater and jeans, or worn over business attire. The longer length keeps legs and torsos warm on chilly days. Play with patterns and colors, such as animal print or pale pink, for extra flair.
Turtlenecks: Put away your t-shirts for the season and use
turtlenecks as your next must-have layering piece. In the past, turtlenecks have fallen in and out of favor. But now they're back again in high demand. Turtlenecks keep you warm, and they're also quite fashionable. Turtlenecks can even be worn in nontraditional ways, such as under a dress with straps.
Skirt belts: Miniskirts can be paired with longer dresses as
a waist cincher or to add a bit of texture. This creates a focal point and can break up the monotony of a long, single-colored dress.
Luxury athletic wear: A trip to the gym or just lounging
around at home can now be even more fashionable, as many brands are now offering luxury gym clothes. These clothes offer a greater attention to detail and more comfort than the usual gym attire and can be mixed and matched with other pieces you may already have in your closet. Slouchy hoods and free-flowing pieces garner all the right attention.
Chokers: Flash back to the 1990s and enjoy the nostalgia of choker necklaces. Black chokers can have a bewitching look and dress up evening wear or even a more casual buttondown shirt.
Fringe: If you haven't yet added something fringed to your
wardrobe, now is the time. The trend is still prevailing with nearly every designer including some sort of fringe or frayed fabric in their collections. Fringed skirts, capes, and vests are just a few looks to try.
Pantsuits are back in a big way, but they're edgier than in years past. Whether it's tailored jackets paired with flowing pants, cigarette-style bottoms and cropped tops or a boxy blazer and suspenders, pantsuits are a chic and trendy look.

How to Help Distracted Students Today's students have more gadgets at their disposal than ever before. As technology like tablets and smartphones have become more prevalent in the lives of adults, such devices also have become more commonplace in the classroom. Some kids thrive when teachers utilize technology to enhance lesson plans, while others may be distracted by access to technology. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is one of the most common childhood disorders. ADHD can make it difficult for kids to maintain focus in the classroom, and that focus may be enhanced or further compromised by technology that's capable of serving many different functions. Kids who use the technology to their advantage may find it improves their ability to grasp lessons, but some kids may be distracted by devices or even other items in the classroom that make it difficult for them to absorb lessons. Parents concerned about their kids' ability to cope with distractions in the classroom and at home can take the following steps in an effort to help youngsters improve their academic performance. Speak to your child's teacher about seating assignments. Students who find it difficult to focus in the classroom may benefit from new seating assignments. Windows or high-traffic areas of the classroom, such as doorways, can compromise a student's ability to focus. In addition, the back of the classroom is not the ideal spot for youngsters who find it difficult to focus on the teacher, as teachers may not notice kids in the back of the class as readily as they might with students sitting in the front of the room. Encourage participation. Many teachers recognize the value of active participation in the classroom, but kids who are struggling to focus may shy away from participating because they are worried about embarrassing themselves in front of their classmates. Parents and teachers can work with students to encourage them to participate, reassuring them that they don't need to be experts on a given subject to contribute to lessons. Even if students' participation is limited to asking questions rather than answering them, 52 October 2015 | azhealthandliving.com
encouraging kids to raise their hands and participate in class may help them focus more on the lessons being discussed.
Minimize distractions at home. Kids who have no trouble focusing in the classroom may find it's a whole different ballgame when they arrive home to study or do their homework. Mom and Dad no doubt have their own gadgets around the house, and such devices as well as television may be too difficult for youngsters to ignore. At home, parents can create a safe haven from distraction by designating a room or area of the house for schoolwork. Such areas should be clear of distractions like television, telephones, video game consoles, and other gadgets that can compromise a student's focus. Make such areas off limits to cellular phones and block social media websites from computers in such rooms so kids aren't tempted to spend study time chatting with friends online. If a child's study area is not in a separate room of the house, parents should avoid turning on the television until kids have finished their studies for the night.
Steps to Unleash Innovation & Improve Work Culture
By Maxine Attong, a certified facilitator and author of Lead Your Team to Win: Achieve Optimal Performance By Providing A Safe Space For Employees
Getting your people to contribute more to your organization while simultaneously establishing stronger talent retention must cost a pretty penny, right? Not really. You don’t necessarily need to add expensive new ingredients to the stew, you just have to know how to use your ingredients better. A talented chef – or in this case, corporate or organizational leader – knows how to let an ingredient speak for itself, perhaps with just a touch of seasoning, or guidance. What is the guidance – competition or incentives such as bonuses? Not exactly. Most employees want to have more input. However, personal issues, fear of being laughed at or anxiety of not getting credit can stymie contributions from a leader’s staff. If a leader can engender a real sense of trust, the organization will benefit from both the individual and the team’s ingenuity. A reliable way of establishing a trusting climate is to make team members feel safe. Here are five steps for doing so.
Share responsibility; practice “I” statements: With openness, encourage interaction by having team members and leaders enforce the rules and monitor the use of common space. When members break the rules, the team discusses the problems and decides on the sanctions and steps necessary to assist the member in following the rules next time. Speakers are discouraged from using the word “you.” Instead, they use “I.” This simple yet effective practice encourages personal culpability and discourages blame.
Consistency: Teams need to consistently follow the agreed-
upon rules as they set the boundaries and the tone for relationships. Following the rules makes the behavior in the space predictable, which limits uncertainty and increases feelings of safety. Consistent application of the rules helps the team to increase trust as behavior becomes prescriptive and members know more or less what will happen in the room and how they will be treated.
Judgment: The members must feel that they are not being
judged. If someone says that an idea is bad, the speaker will shut down and feel embarrassed. In the future that speaker will hesitate to give ideas, since he feels his ideas may not be good enough for the team. Less confident team members may refrain from presenting ideas if they are uncertain of the
quality of the ideas. However, many ideas that may seem strange or unorthodox at first can wind up being some of the best.
Good intentions: Not all team members are effective communicators so it may be difficult for some people to frame and cogently express their thoughts. Assume all team members have good intentions and want a positive outcome. Even though what you are hearing may be contrary to that assumption, hold on to the thought so that you are able to fully understand what the member is saying before you react. When listening this way, the leader delays having a reaction and has time to assess the situation before responding. When the leader has emotionally detached from the situation, he can then ask questions to clarify the situation.
Norming: By this point, team members seem to embrace each other and there is a spirit of togetherness. Do not be fooled by this. This doesn’t mean that your team has normed —that each team member makes decisions that advance the goals of the team. It means that the safe space concept has allowed them to see each other in a more neutral light and accept each other’s strengths and weaknesses. While the space may act as an accelerator or catalyst for the team to norm, it is not magic. It does not mean that whatever problems existed within the team before have miraculously disappeared. The leader still needs to pay attention and check the team temperature. Regular team meetings and team building sessions should still be conducted. azhealthandliving.com | October 2015

Hurley, who has lead a successful career as an actress and fashion entrepreneur as well, is a strong supporter of breast cancer awareness because she lost her grandmother to the disease. According to British publication The Times, Hurley’s grandmother showed her scars from a double mastectomy but then quickly changed the subject. "At that time, there was so little written about breast cancer," she told The Times. "It wasn't until I started to learn about breast cancer through Evelyn Lauder that I began to feel so angry that I hadn't known more at the time, when perhaps I could have helped her. We know that if a cancer is found and treated early, there is a 95 percent chance of recovery. If only my grandmother and countless other scared women could have known this."
“She [Hurley] was honored in October 2009 by the [Breast Cancer Awareness] Foundation and awarded the Humanitarian Award for her fundraising efforts. Two research scientists at the Royal Marsden hospital in the U.K. have grants in her name,” according to elizabethhurley.com. In addition, to her public support of breast cancer awareness and research, she also supports various children’s and health-based charities. As if that wasn’t enough, she owns her own clothing line and is scene on numerous film and television appearances. Fans can currently catch her as Queen Helena in The Royals TV series. "The ultimate reason to advertise and your choice of where to advertise is return on investment. A cheap ad campaign that produces few results ends up being an expensive ad campaign. With this in mind, we track our ROI in all advertising that we do. The AZH&L campaign by far has produced the best return on investment of any advertising vehicle we tried. And we've tried a lot." - Dr. K. Kukurin Chiropractic, Acupuncture and Nutrition Network

Easy Ways to Get More Youthful-Looking Skin Many lifestyle changes, including quitting smoking, reducing alcohol consumption and staying out of the sun, can contribute to younger-looking skin. Few people would pass up the opportunity to look younger. But men and women who want to look a little more like their younger selves without resorting to surgery can still have younger, healthier-looking skin without going under the knife. The following are a handful of natural ways to keep skin vibrant and youthful.
Quit smoking. Quitting smoking can add years to your life and improve your appearance. Smoking damages collagen and elastin in the skin, which are the substances that help keep skin flexible and firm. Also, smoking decreases blood flow to the skin and makes it difficult for it to receive enough oxygen to stay healthy. The act of smoking also can contribute to older-looking skin. Pursing the lips to draw on a cigarette, as well as squinting to avoid smoke in the eyes can lead to the formation of wrinkles on the face. Steer clear of the sun. Excessive exposure to ultraviolet light damages the skin and can cause it to age prematurely. Also, inadvertent UV exposure, which can happen when running errands or sitting in front of an open window, also can affect the skin. Sun exposure is the top cause of uneven skin tone and dark spots. Always wear sunscreen to protect the skin from the sun. Applying sunscreen should become as automatic as brushing your teeth each day. Drink more water. A dehydrated body will divert water to the organs that need it the most, including the liver and heart. When that happens, skin pays the price by not receiving adequate hydration for skin cell renewal. By drinking the recommended six to eight glasses of water per day, you can ensure your body is getting the fluids it needs to fuel natural functions, including skin cell production. Avoid alcohol. Drinking alcohol in excess can damage blood vessels over time. This can cause burst capillaries at the surface of the skin, which are highly visible. 60

Many lifestyle changes, including quitting smoking, reducing alcohol consumption and staying out of the sun, can contribute to younger-looking skin. Avoid stressful situations. It's impossible to avoid all the stressors in life, but taking steps to reduce stress can improve your psychological outlook and appearance. Stress can lessen your body's ability to function properly, and that can affect the appearance of your skin. Stressrelated insomnia can lead to under eye bags and a tired appearance. And according to the Archives of Dermatology, stress can increase your risk of skin diseases and may cause wounds to take longer to heal.
benefit the skin. Omega-3 fatty acids found in walnuts, flax, and fish oil are important for skin health because they support healthy cell membranes. Antioxidants like vitamins A and C also are beneficial because they fight the effects of cell oxidation and combat free radicals that can lead to illness. Take care of your skin at night. Moisturizers and serums with concentrated blends of vitamins, antioxidants, and botanicals are most effective at night. That's because, when applied at night, such products are in contact with the skin for several hours without being wiped off. Just be sure to apply any products to clean skin for maximum effect. A dermatologist can recommend the right products for your skin type.
Eat a healthy diet. Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and it makes sense that healthy foods will
There are various ways to get more youthful-looking skin, many of which can benefit the rest of your body as well.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Recreational Vehicle Buyers should do their homework before purchasing an RV. Opportunity for adventure abounds for recreational vehicle owners. With a motor home parked in the driveway, a road trip or instant family getaway is only a few steps away. While RVs can be rented, serious road-trippers often prefer purchasing one so that it can be customized with the features desired and always be at the ready. RVs vary in price depending on the vehicle, and there are a few thing prospective RV owners should know before they begin shopping. First and foremost, drivers who have not previous owned an RV or even stepped inside of one you may have an inaccurate perception of these vehicles. Today's recreational vehicles are much more than meets the eye, and it pays to attend an RV show to become acquainted with the various types of motor homes. This way you will be familiar with the jargon and have a reasonable idea of what you want before going to a dealership. There are various classes of RVs, but the largest ones tend to be the most expensive. Some RVs have an engine and are driven like a bus, while other models hitch to the back of a truck or van. If you will be towing an RV, you must be certain the car or truck doing the towing is equipped to tow a vehicle the weight and size of your particular RV. Some RVs have fixed dimensions, while others expand, either manually or electronically, pushing out walls to provide even more interior room when the RV is parked. RVs have different floor plans, and there are many different models to fit a buyer's needs. Many RVs are equipped with no frills furnishings, but there are models that feature top-of-the-line appliances and fixtures. It's possible to get granite countertops and cherry cabinets in an RV, but such accessories will increase the cost of the vehicle. Upholstered sofas and dining room banquettes may be upgraded to leather. Some RVs have an additional kitchenette built into the exterior of the unit for easy access when barbecuing or cooking at a campsite. How you plan to use the RV should also be considered before purchasing one. Will you be spending time cooking meals and sleeping inside, or will it mainly be used as a storage unit for your camping gear? Do you plan on taking extended vacations and desire all the comforts of home? 62

Defining these goals will help you find the right RV for you. Another thing to consider is renting an RV for a day or two to get a feel for driving it and what it is like to spend a night inside. You may be able to determine if you need more or less of a mobile home when you ultimately decide to purchase. Make sure everything works before you drive the RV off the lot. Repairs can be expensive, and you do not want to be stuck with a lemon when you're on the road. Find out if there are any roadside assistance packages that can be negotiated to offer you peace of mind with your first RV. The decision of whether or not to purchase an RV requires ample forethought. Comparing a number of different models and designs and weighing personal needs can give buyers a good idea of which RV is right for them.
Shopping for an Assisted Living Facility By MS
The decision to move yourself or a family member to an assisted living facility can be difficult. When men and women begin to experience difficulty with everyday activities, such as bathing, dressing or getting around, families may need to explore assisted living facilities. Here are a few pointers to find facilities your loved ones will enjoy.
Change Your Thoughts. Change Your Words. Change Your World.
Consider the arrangements and services offered. Some
facilities offer single rooms, while others provide apartmentstyle living. Most assisted living facilities provide a variety of services, such as housekeeping, laundry, exercise and wellness classes, and social activities, for their residents. Investigate the offerings at each home you visit, looking for a facility that best suits your loved one's needs.

Inquire about staff and their schedules. It is important
to know how many staff members a facility has and how many people are working at any given time. Do staffing schedules differ at night? If a resident has a particular rapport with one staff member, can he or she be requested? Look for a facility that is well staffed and adept at dealing with elderly men and women.
Learn about individual service plans. Many assisted living
facilities create individual service plans, or ISPs, for their residents to ensure individualized care is given. These plans are important for the safety and comfort of residents and can help maximize a person's independence. Some communities offer memory care programs for those with Alzheimer's disease or other cognitive disorders.
Consider the security in place. A good assisted living
facility has a 24-hour support system in place and immediate access to care. Rooms may be equipped with emergency phones that can be accessed day or night. Many homes have checkin desks so that residents are accounted for when going on outings and for announcing guests.
Check on licensing. In the United States, each state has its
own licensing requirements for assisted living facilities. Confirm a facility is licensed and that it meets the expectations of the local regulatory agency. In addition, check with the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been filed against the home. azhealthandliving.com |October 2015

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called friends, red lights called enemies, caution lights called family. You will have flats called jobs. But, if you have a spare called determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith and a driver named Jesus—you will make it to a place called success.” – Author Unknown
