Release Your Skinhibitions! Is your fear of cosmetic procedures inhibiting your skin’s radiance? For many people high cost, downtime, pain, and side effects are a major inhibitor for working on skin imperfections that may affect self-confidence. With advancements in technology and experienced providers, you now can have it all!

Before

New Sublative® treatments utilize non-laser, nor-light based technology to provide desired results without the risk or worry of more invasive procedures. This fractionated bi-polar radio frequency (RF) technology precisely targets the skin at a level to stimulate new collagen and new healthy skin cells. The results are a marked reduction of acne scars, mild to moderate wrinkles, improvement in skin discolorations, and an overall smoother and more elastic skin texture. For best results three treatments are done 4-6 weeks apart, however, more may be required depending on your skin condition. A slight warm, prickly sensation is felt as the energy is penetrating the skin and a light pink or red flush is seen after the treatment. Makeup may be worn the following day. One of the best advantages of Sublative® is its safety to be used on all skin types including darker pigmented skin. Therefore, if you have been nervous about trying a cosmetic procedure but you are looking for amazing results, Sublative® Skin Rejuvenation is an effective treatment for wrinkles, textural imperfections, and acne scarring with minimal downtime. It is completely safe, comfortable and can be done in a half-hour.

“ I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name. ~Revelation 3:8 Welcome to our Business & Career Issue. It is important to glorify God in everything that we do. I decree these bible verses inspire you in your professional life.

I Corinthians 9:24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.

1 Peter 4:11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Ecclesiastes 11:4 He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap.

Deuteronomy 8:18 But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

Leviticus 19:11 Ye shall not steal, neither deal falsely, neither lie one to another.

Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Proverbs 19:17 He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.

Proverbs 13:11 Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.

Isaiah 1:17-19 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:

Leviticus 19:13 Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbour, neither rob him: the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Psalm 112:5 A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion.

Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

Proverbs 16:8 Better is a little with righteousness than great revenues without right. Proverbs 24:27 Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house. Proverbs 20:5 Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out. I Thessalonians 5:16-19 Rejoice, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Proverbs 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. II Corinthians 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:

James 2:26 Faith without works is dead. Joshua 1:9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. Mark 8:36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. Until next time,

Mom on a Mission A first-time Valley author pens a book about healthy eating for kids As a working mom with two small children, Candice Imwalle, a Valley resident and first time author, understands the challenge of incorporating healthy eating into daily life. In her job as a medical device regional manager she regularly encounters patients who suffer from vascular disease and Type 2 diabetes, most commonly caused by a lifetime of poor food choices. Inspired by her job, and the rising obesity rates for both children and adults in the United States, Imwalle decided to search for children’s books about the effects of an unhealthy lifestyle for her kids to read. While there were plenty of books about manners and things like kindness, to her disappointment, Imwalle was unable to find any books that talked about healthy eating choices for young readers. The lack of options for this kind of children’s literature motivated Imwalle to write her own book – Sir Morgan and the Kingdom of Horrible Food. With a drive to educate children early so they make good food choices and have a healthy adult life, Imwalle enlisted the writing help of her elementary-school-aged kids, Isabella and Cameron, to ensure the book was fun and interesting to younger readers. “As parents, it is important that we educate our children at a very early age about the impact healthy eating choices have on our body and our lives,” says Imwalle. “When reading this book, children understand the message that eating low sugar and whole foods is important for a lifetime of good health. It’s perfectly OK to have unhealthy food in moderation, but to make processed foods, like chicken nuggets, hot dogs and pizza, the majority of a child’s diet will have a negative impact on their health, both short-term and long-term.” Sir Morgan and the Kingdom of Horrible Food is a colorful fairytale about a land where residents have no consequence for eating high-fat, high-sugar and high-calorie foods until an evil witch casts a spell on the citizens and the negative effects of these decadent foods impacts the way they look and feel. The ideal age for this book is kindergarten through fourth grade. Unlike other books in the market today, this book provides a great opportunity for parents and teachers to start a dialogue 14 August 2015| azhealthandliving.com

with children about making healthy food decisions and the impact these choices have on a person’s health, body and the way they feel overall. In an effort to bring her message to children of all ages, Imwalle recently conducted a book tour at several Scottsdale and Paradise Valley elementary schools. During the tour, she spoke to hundreds of kids about the importance of making good food choices, read Sir Morgan and the Kingdom of Horrible Food, and answered questions from the students. At the end of the reading sessions, Imwalle donated copies of the book to each school’s library. This fall she will visit more schools throughout the Valley to share the book and its important message. Photo courtesy of Candice Imwalle

A young male African lion is currently on display in the baby animal nursery at Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park. Plans are to introduce him to our young female white lion when he is older and much larger. In the coming weeks, keepers will be adding meat to his diet as he transitions from milk. It takes several years for male lions to reach maturity and to grow a full mane. Unfortunately, African lions have experienced a catastrophic decline in population numbers over the past quarter century. The once plentiful iconic African species and "king of the jungle" may soon go extinct if wild population declines due to habitat and prey loss, human conflict and overpopulation are not reversed. Astute Hoot

Arizona educators create exceptional learning tools In 2010, Jennifer Zoglman, a special education teacher, and Jessica Murphy, a second grade teacher, began co-teaching a reading intervention block. They quickly became exasperated by extreme budget cuts and the failing onesize-fits-all curriculum. In fact, recent research estimates that Arizona is losing approximately 20 percent of firstyear teachers and approximately 24 percent of second-year teachers — far exceeding the national average. Zoglman and Murphy wanted better for their students and their peers. It was there that Astute Hoot: Tools for the Wise Teacher was born. Zoglman says that it’s their love of teachers and the profession in which they find inspiration. “Teachers are leaving the profession in droves and the joy of teaching is dwindling with all of the pressures and expectations being put on them,” she explains. “We want to help them! We love teachers and want to support them be more efficient and effective while still loving their jobs. We want to change the status quo because we know that students and teachers deserve better.” Zoglman and Murphy joined forces with Tina RatajBerard, the designer of all things Astute Hoot and Zoglman’s sister, to create a unique cast of reading and math strategy animals and accompanying books, hands-on tools, lessons and graphic organizers. These supplemental resources were designed to enhance any curriculum and/or intervention program.

The engaging animals helped bring the learning strategies to life, even the most reluctant students blossomed into motivated, enthusiastic learners; they begged to meet new animals and asked for extra graphic organizers for home. In fact, it was these students who made the greatest reading gains in the entire school district when Murphy and Zoglman first introduced them to their classes. Murphy is thrilled to see how the resources help students at various learning levels. “Although we originally designed these resources to help struggling students, I’m delighted to see how all students are immediately drawn to the animals and use them to master and transfer critical strategies,” she says. Designed for students K-3, Astute Hoot is based on the leading character Hazel Hoot, an adorable green screech owl. She is struggling as she lacks the strategies needed to help her succeed. In the charming book, Hazel Meets the Reading Strategy Friends, Hazel stumbles upon a magical tree in the forest. Out of the tree appear 10 colorful woodland animals that each introduces a research-based, standards-aligned reading strategy. These animals guide Hazel along to become a proficient reader. In the sequel, Hazel Meets the Math Strategy Friends, Hazel swoops down to catch her dinner at the local pond when she grabs Upton, an enchanted fish. Upton oversees Problem-Solving Pond and promises to introduce Hazel

to his animal friends, all who teach a special problemsolving strategy. With Upton’s guidance and the help of his strategy friends, Hazel blossoms into a confident accomplished mathematician who is able to tackle problems with ease.

“We plan to bring our reading and math tools, along with our workshops to K-3 classrooms across the country,” she notes. “In addition, we are excited to announce a brand new cast of writing strategy animals which will be introduced in the coming months.”

Astute Hoot’s creative cast of strategy animals makes learning safe and fun while teaching critical strategies in a child-friendly way. Students make an immediate connection to the animals and relate to Hazel’s struggles. For Zoglman, the most important aspect of Astute Hoot is awakening the joy of learning and sparking enthusiasm in students. “Seeing the light bulb go on when we help students learn to read and master problem solving skills is the driving force behind our work,” she says. “We have a special spot in our hearts especially for those students with special needs and challenges which make learning difficult for them. We understand their struggles and strive to provide them with the strategies and scaffolds they need to be successful and independent in school.” These exceptional educators show no signs of slowing down. In fact, Zoglman and the rest of the Astute Hoot team have big plans for Hazel Hoot and her colorful cast of friends.

Prevent & Treat Varicose Veins Varicose veins are a common condition that can be treated with a number of non-invasive options. The circulatory system is quite remarkable, pumping oxygenated blood throughout the body to keep cells alive and organs operating properly. According to The Franklin Institute's human heart data, if every capillary, artery and vein were laid out in a straight line, the average adult has 100,000 miles worth of blood vessels. Although the vessels in all areas of the body work hard, those in the legs and feet are susceptible to a lot of pressure, as walking increases the stress put on these vessels. In turn, varicose veins are common in the lower limbs. Veins can become varicose when one-way valves in the veins do not function properly. The valves are designed to keep blood flowing back up to the heart. If the valves weaken or fail, blood can pool in the veins, causing them to bulge or appear misshapen. The Society of Interventional Radiology says varicose veins affect one out of two people age 50 and older and 15 to 25 percent of all adults. Varicose veins are not often a health risk, but they can sometimes be troublesome. Severe cases may be a cosmetic issue, with gnarled and bumpy veins crisscrossing the legs. For others, the affected veins can cause aching pains and discomfort. Some varicose veins may indicate a larger risk of other circulatory problems, advises The Mayo Clinic. Varicose veins often can be alleviated with self-care methods. Others may require some more invasive therapies. 路 Elevating the legs and feet can relieve pressure on veins in the legs. This may help alleviate some of the swelling. 路 Compression stockings can ease the pain of varicose veins and prevent them from getting worse. 26 August 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

Varicose veins are a common condition that can be treated with a number of non-invasive options. 路 Sclerotherapy, or the injection of saline into the varicose vein, can harden the vein and make it disappear. Laser treatments also may make varicose veins shrivel up and no longer pose a problem. 路 Larger veins may require phlebectomy or ablation. Phlebectomy involves removal of the vein through small cuts. Ablation uses intense heat to treat the vein. Varicose veins are often a side effect of getting older. As a person ages, he, or she may lose elasticity in the veins, causing them to stretch. Those with a family history of varicose veins may be more susceptible. Being overweight or standing and sitting for long periods also can lead to varicose veins. Exercising, eating a high-fiber diet and changing sitting or standing positions regularly can help. If varicose veins are unsightly or prove painful, speak with a doctor about the treatment options available to you.

Explaining Spinal Muscular Atrophy By MS

Spinal muscular atrophy, often referred to as "SMA," is a condition few people are acquainted with until it affects them or a loved one. A genetic disease affecting the part of the nervous system that controls voluntary muscle movement, SMA most often affects infants and children and can prove debilitating.

What causes SMA? According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, chromosome 5 SMA, the most common form of SMA, is caused by a deficiency of SMN, a motor neuron protein. This protein is necessary for normal motor neuron function, and a deficiency of SMN is caused by mutations on chromosome 5 in the SMN1 gene. Mutations in other genes may also cause SMA, and such cases are referred to as nonchromosome 5 SMA.

What are the symptoms of SMA? There are various types of SMA, and the symptoms can vary depending on the type of SMA a person has. The following are some of the symptoms associated with the various types of SMA.

Type 1 is the most severe type of SMA. When a child is

type 1, he or she may have difficulty supporting his or her head and sitting without help. Difficulty swallowing and weakness in the arms and legs may also occur. The muscles that control breathing also can be compromised when a child has type 1, and breathing problems can affect a child's life expectancy.

Type 2 SMA typically affects the legs more than the arms.

Type 2 affects children between 6 and 18 months of age, and such kids may be able to sit, stand or walk with help.

Type 3 is the mildest form of SMA, it may be referred to as juvenile SMA. Children with type 3 can often stand or walk without help, but they may have difficulty climbing stairs, getting up from a chair or running.

Type 4 SMA begins in adulthood, and men and women

may experience muscle weakness, twitching or breathing problems. Physical therapy can help better manage symptoms, which typically only affect the upper arms and legs. Parents can learn more about SMA by visiting the Muscular Dystrophy Association at www.mda.org. azhealthandliving.com |August 2015

Nip the Nail Biting Habit for Your Health Nail biting, also known as onychophagia, is a common habit that affects people of all ages. Biting your nails usually stems from stress or forms as a nervous habit. Most research says that children and teenagers make up the greatest number of regular nail biters. On the surface nail biting may seem like a trivial thing in terms of affecting your health. Although it can seem like biting your nails does nothing more than make the hands look less attractive, there are actually other dangers to repeated nail biting that people prone to the habit should consider. Firstly, biting your nails can be an unsanitary behavior. The fingers can pick up all measures of contaminants, and the nails can be an ideal location for bacteria to thrive since nails are more difficult to keep clean than the surface of the hands. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, bacteria like E. coli can live beneath the tips of your nails. When you bite your nails, those bacteria end up in your gastrointestinal system and can lead to infection. The nails also can harbor fecal matter and many other unsavory microscopic particles, even parasites. Biting your nails gives these tiny invaders easy access to your body. Nail biting also may lead to infections on the fingers around the nail bed. The infection, called paronychia, causes redness, swelling and pain around the nail. Microorganisms can get into the skin through tiny tears and abrasions that occur while biting the nails and cuticles, says The Mayo Clinic. If the infection damages the nail bed, you can end up affecting nail growth. Should you have warts on your hands or fingers, they easily can be transferred to your lips and mouth through nail biting. Nail biting also can cause problems to your teeth. Prolonged nail biting may affect how the teeth form in children. It 28 August 2015| azhealthandliving.com

Vaccines & Side Effects

Vaccines are recommended to prevent disease and keep us healthy. Vaccines are responsible for something called "herd immunity." If the majority of people in a community have been vaccinated against a certain disease, an unvaccinated person is less likely to get sick himself. During the past 60 years, vaccines have helped eradicate smallpox and almost wiped out all cases of polio. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also reports a 99 percent reduction in the incidence of bacterial meningitis since the introduction of the vaccination against the disease. Despite the good they can do, some people are hesitant to follow recommended vaccination schedules for fear of side effects. Some side effects are legitimate, but many studies continue to indicate there is no relationship between vaccines and autism. Vaccines undergo rigorous safety testing prior to being approved for use and, once approved, are continually monitored for safety. But as with any medication, there are possible side effects associated with vaccinations, although most are not serious. The following are some side effects that people may experience after being vaccinated: injection site reactions, such as pain, swelling, a small lump and redness, mild fever, shivering , fatigue , headache and muscle and joint pain. More serious side effects, such as allergic reactions, are rare. Parents should monitor their children after vaccinations for any behavior or health changes. Many vaccination side effects are short-lived and not a cause for concern. But if side effects do not subside shortly after you have been vaccinated, bring this to the attention of your physician. It can be tempting to forgo vaccines out of fear of any of the aforementioned side effects. But the benefits of vaccines far outweigh the risks. Although they are not 100 percent effective in every person, vaccines do provide the best defense against diseases that can kill or injure millions of people. azhealthandliving.com |August 2015

MIND, BODY & spirIT By Vickie Milazzo, author of Wicked Success Is Inside Every Woman

Drained & Depleted?

Ways to Replenish Emotionally If you’re so stressed that just surviving another day is cause for celebration, it’s time to hit the “refresh” button on your life. You should not accept this state of stressed-out existence and call it living. You can lead a successful life and cultivate a wellspring of energy that will renew your mind, body and soul every day—but first you’ve got to give yourself a break. Here are 19 strategies that every woman can use to replenish her emotional energy:

Get away. Take one day off with no responsibilities. Take a virtual vacation. Women are sensual creatures. We enjoy rich fabrics, exotic fragrances, music, dance and art. Yet, as we reach for wicked success and attainment, sometimes we leave these restorative sensory pleasures behind. Indulging in the occasional sensory banquet is second only to an actual getaway.

Hug a tree…or an iceberg! Getting off the grid is not always an easy thing to do. Still, make it a goal at least once a year to get far away, into something so different that it forces you out of your regular relaxation routine into one that entirely disconnects you from day-to-day life. Many people find that nature and wildlife provide two of the most powerful tools for relaxation in the world.

Renew with music. Play music that energizes or relaxes you, depending upon what’s called for. Choose classical pieces for intense projects and rock and roll for cooking, household chores or packing suitcases. At night, play slow music to unwind and relax.

Choose happiness. The fact is, happiness is not only

contagious to others, it’s contagious to ourselves. You may not always wake up happy, but wherever you are physically or emotionally, try to focus on the part of the experience that is good. Life will always throw us curveballs, fastballs, and, just when you think you know what’s coming next, the occasional change-up. Being happy to the core helps us hit them back—no matter how fast they are or how many come our way. Remember, happiness is more important to wicked success than success to happiness. Decide every day that nothing will get in the way of choosing happiness. 30

August 2015| azhealthandliving.com

Monitor your intimate companions. Nothing drains energy faster than negative thinking. Your thoughts do control your life; in fact, they are your most intimate companions. When you notice that you’re wasting energy thinking negatively about someone or something, remind yourself that you’re only attacking and harming yourself with such thoughts. This is not to say that you can—or should—ignore your feelings or reality. But when you learn to control your thoughts, you touch new places of feeling that are even more real. Turn off the critic. Do you find that your inner “critical voice” rears its head way too often? For instance, you might wonder, Is it me or was that secretary less friendly than usual? Did I do something? Or perhaps you walk into your house and, in an instant, zero in on everything that’s wrong: the messy kitchen, the scratched coffee table, the pile of bills waiting on the counter. However, allowing this inner critic to be your dominant communication style will negatively impact you, your family and anyone else you encounter. Instead, try to intentionally notice and comment on the good things to fuel your success energy.

Be nice and watch how nice people will be in return. There is an economy of emotion with niceness. Few things will give you more energy than the rewards of being nice. Likewise, nothing will drain your emotional energy faster than not playing nice with others. Dump toxic clutter. Because you have important familial, professional and social commitments, it’s important to eliminate toxic or emotionally draining relationships and other social clutter, just as you dump the mess that accumulates on your desk. This gives you time for relationships that matter—husband, family and best friends. Likewise, guard what enters your mind. For example, it’s important to be aware of the world around you, but there’s no need to listen to negative news stories 24/7. Detach. Why put your own precious emotional energy into someone or something else that doesn’t provide a positive return? Detach from emotional unrest that doesn’t serve a purpose in your life and feel the increase in your own positive energy charge.

You’ll never get that time back. Treat every moment as a precious gift.

Lighten up. It’s tempting to behave as though everything you do is intensely important. But unless you let go of some of that intensity, you’ll be emotionally exhausted. When you find yourself making mountains out of molehills, ask yourself, “In one year, will this be significant?” Lighten up. If you push, you get resistance. Be less serious about the outcome of the little things.

Practice gratitude. For happy people, gratitude seems to outweigh desire. For unhappy people, it’s about want, want, want, with little gratitude in return. Now, there’s nothing wrong with desire, because desires fire your passionate vision. But gratitude must always be greater. Otherwise, you’ll never be satisfied or happy. Acknowledge daily three things you’re grateful for, small or large, and express gratitude to others as well.

Learn a new language. As soon as you label something “bad,” you limit your ability to have fun. When you substitute the right mental gear for the word “hate,” you will be amazed at how much emotional energy you gain. Take all such negative words down a notch in mind and voice, and notice how differently you feel.

Accept yourself as you are. How often do we let the comparison game rob us of joy? If you’re five-feet-twoinches tall, with sturdy ankles, you’ll never grow into a lithe five-feet-seven-inches. The fact is, some things we can change and others we can’t. Let the things you can’t change about yourself go.

Let it go. Do you suffer from dissatisfaction and frustration? Do you find yourself whining and complaining instead of acting on your passionate vision? Try letting it all go and see the difference that it makes in your day. Appreciate what you have. When frustration happens, take a breath and let it go. Enjoy the moment. How often do you hear or say, “Thank God it’s Friday”? Do we want to enjoy only two days out of seven? Why not “Thank God it’s today”? If you are living for the weekend, you aren’t living. You can’t repeat a day or even an hour or minute.

Find the fun. Fun is healing, and laughter keeps us sane. Laughter raises T-cell counts, relaxes blood vessels, eases muscle tension and reduces psychological stress, which enhances learning. Create your own party. You can have a party anywhere—at your house, or in your mind. Embrace life with energy and joy. Wherever you go physically, emotionally or mentally, take the party with you. Eat dessert first. Sometimes we treat renewal like a dessert we have to earn by eating our vegetables. Feast before you fast, and eat dessert first. azhealthandliving.com | August 2015

By Lynda Chervil, author of Fool’s Return

How to Be the Boss of Your Own Life Entrepreneurship is alive and well in the United States with hundreds of thousands of new businesses opening each year. More than 22 million of our small businesses are oneman (or woman) shops, and the number of those ringing up more than $1 million in sales is growing – it was nearly 27,000 in 2011, the most recent U.S. Census statistics available. Americans are very savvy business people, and for more and more of us, the rewards of running our own business trounce the risks associated with stepping out on our own. Imagine what would happen if we applied our CEO mindset and skills to our own lives? Sometimes, it takes a boss to tell you to do something in order for it to get done. Now’s the time to become that boss. Here are a few tips for doing that:

Embrace change, renewal and rebirth. There is no shortage of opportunity to notice change in life. Don’t be afraid to use milestones to provide yourself with an “employer’s review” on how you’re doing in your own life. What are you doing well, what needs work and how are you going to improve? Create a detailed plan on how you expect to accomplish your goals. Give yourself a timeline, such as losing 20 pounds by summer or increasing your net worth by next year. You’re your own best entrepreneur. Part of being a good boss means trying out enterprising ideas; it’s the mediocre bosses who are content with the status quo. You don’t have to start with something wild. Instead, follow through on ideas that are good for you, such as buying healthy food that you haven’t yet tried. Look up recipes for how to prepare a healthy item like quinoa – make a project out of it. Have fun with the new you. Just because you have a new job with plenty of responsibility – being your own boss – doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. Manage what you can control; accept what you cannot; and look outside the box. This is not as easy as it may sound because we often think we can control 32 August 2015| azhealthandliving.com

things that, in fact, we cannot, including how people respond to us or how quickly our bodies respond to diet and exercise. Progress does not happen all at once. While it makes sense to focus on what we can control, you may also consider alternative methods of living. That may include riding a bike to work rather than driving, or exploring alternative forms of spiritual healing.

Don’t be a victim! To a greater or lesser extent, we’re all taught to be obedient conform to the standards set by parents, teachers and bosses. Unfortunately, for many, this passive role can shape one’s identity and influence other relationships. It all starts with one’s own relationship to one’s self. As most parents and teachers will say, the best students are those who need the least help and are willing to be proactive in their own improvement. Understand that it’s not others who determine what you can do; it’s you!

Q. Are there any potential problems Q. Why should I care about Postthat may arise if I have a hearing Concussion Syndrome? loss and don’t treat it? A. Historically, the prevailing wisdom has A. Hearing loss can create more problems been that concussion injuries from blows for a person the longer it goes untreated. Many people who live with hearing loss tell themselves it is not bad enough to do something about it. In fact, the average person who has trouble hearing waits on average 7-10 years before seeing an audiologist to have it treated. Untreated hearing loss can lead to auditory deprivation which can cause the hearing nerve to shut down over time. If the hearing nerve shuts down from lack of auditory stimulation, chances of hearing aids helping are very slim. If hearing aids are worn after the nerve ceases to function, the biggest complaint is clarity. In these situations, the only option is a surgically implanted hearing device. Recent studies also show that untreated hearing loss is now raising the risk for the early onset of dementia, due to lack of stimulation, which ultimately results in cognitive decline. When you deprive your ears from hearing, you are also depriving your brain from processing environmental sounds, speech and cognition. Your brain processes sound binaurally (from both sides), so not keeping both sides of the brain active can create cognitive load (straining to hear) and can lead to cognitive decline. By keeping all the areas of the brain functioning to their full potential, the risk of dementia decreases.

to the head were self-limited conditions. This meant that with a little rest, the concussion would heal itself in a few weeks. Concussion symptoms, if they persisted were called post-concussion syndrome. This condition, it was felt, would rarely last more than six months. Boy were we wrong with our thinking of concussion and its long-term effects. Research in the past decade has led us to redefine concussion as traumatic brain injury. Brain trauma can occur from automobile accidents, sports injuries, even playground falls, and can produce serious life long problems for patients. Some of the persistent symptoms of traumatic brain injury include recurrent headaches, fatigue, dizziness and unsteadiness, brain fog and even cognitive impairment. What research has shown is that the initial head trauma affects one part of the brain, but also can trigger brain inflammation that spreads throughout the brain. If this spreading inflammation is not stopped or if additional concussions occur while the brain is in a state of inflammation it can actually lead to a specific type of premature dementia, called traumatic encephalopathy. So you can see brain injury is complex and requires comprehensive treatment. There are a number of natural substances that have been shown to quell brain inflammation, specific exercises can often help to restore impaired brain function secondary to brain trauma, massage of the neck often reduces headache and balance training can be very effective in reducing light-headedness and dizziness. –Dr. Kukurin Kukurin Chiropractic, Acupuncture & Nutrition Network 623.547.4727

Q. What causes varicose veins and what are my treatment options? A. Varicose veins are a condition caused by

venous disease, and the symptoms include discoloration, restless legs, pain and swelling. In the United States alone, more than 70 million people will suffer from a venous disorder at some point in their life. For some time in the beginning stages, you may not even be aware of the condition. If you are experiencing symptoms such as swollen, twisted veins, restless legs, cramps or swollen ankles, it is likely a sign that the disorder has progressed. These conditions are caused by a malfunction in the one-way valves located in your veins, which help to keep your blood flowing in the right direction. When the valves are not functioning as intended, your blood can end up flowing backward, pooling in the branches of your veins. This is most commonly known as venous insufficiency, and is what causes varicose veins, as well as spider veins in some cases. There are a variety of vein and vascular treatments, including: EVLT treatments: One of the treatments we highly recommend is Endovenous Laser Therapy (also known as EVLT) because it is minimally invasive, simple, safe and incredibly effective. It typically takes less than one hour to complete. Sclerotherapy: The standard treatment for small spider veins and varicose veins is called sclerotherapy. This procedure uses a special solution, which is injected into the affected vein, allowing it to collapse and eventually absorb. –Dr. Sharma Arizona Vein & Laser Institute & Med Spa 602.298.VEIN(8346) 602.298.LIPO(5476)

A. Our country is sleep-deprived—desperate for restful nights, to awaken easily, and be functional throughout the day without needing a nap. The anxiety and stress of our busy world certainly make it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. However, those dreams of being rested are even more difficult to achieve when nights are fraught with the tossing, turning, snoring, choking, or gasping for breath of oneself or a bed partner.

tinnitus?

patient experiences a ringing, buzzing, or a hissing auditory sensation in the absence of an external sound. The two classifications of tinnitus are objective and subjective.

The objective form, which is rare, refers to a condition in which a real sound is generated by an internal biological activity, such as vascular turbulence or pulsations or spasm of the muscles in the middle ear, Eustachian tube or soft palate. Subjective tinnitus, the most common type, refers to a phantom auditory sensation for which no objective sound can be identified. Subjective tinnitus affects 12–14 percent of adults; in some cases, the tinnitus is so severe or disabling those patients seek medical treatment. While there is no specific treatment for tinnitus, there are treatments that can alleviate or reduce the tinnitus in some patients. The auriculotemporal nerve that innervates the external ear, may be a perfect target for treating tinnitus. Electrical stimulation of this nerve has been shown to increase the activity in the parasympathetic nervous system. Increased parasympathetic nervous system activation is associated with decreased tinnitus. There are a number of classical acupuncture points associated with the auriculotemporal nerve allowing for stimulation via acupuncture or laser acupuncture. Some studies suggest that Laser light directed into the ear may eliminate or reduce tinnitus. In theory, therapy like low-level laser, acupuncture, and electrical stimulation may improve tinnitus. These treatments are both safe and carry very little risk. They offer hope for patients suffering from tinnitus.

affecting their learning?

your child is having vision issues that may be affecting their learning. Does your child find reading difficult? Does your child get frustrated when reading? Does your child easily quit or give up when attempting to read? Answering yes to any of these questions means there is a possibility that your child has a visually related learning problem. Not all children with learning difficulties have vision problems but 20 percent of all children have difficulty in learning because their visual system is not functioning properly. Many are misdiagnosed as having a learning disability or ADD. Many of the children with learning related visual difficulties pass vision screenings at school or at the pediatrician. Many of them actually see 20/20 but still have vision related issues. Eye charts test visual acuity; can you see it or not. Best functioning vision is so much more than just having the ability to see 20/20. It involves how the eyes adjust focus from near to far or far to near and how the eyes process what they are seeing. Individuals can sometimes have serious visual problems and yet still see 20/20. Some of the symptoms a child experiences can be some of the following: headache when reading, words slide together when reading, loses place when reading, and giving up easily when reading. If you child has any of these symptoms, schedule them to see an eye doctor.

minor annoyance?

Millions are disturbed throughout the night by sleep-disordered breathing caused by airway obstruction. Sleep-disordered breathing is a serious health problem, and initially appears as snoring. Although snoring is generally viewed as a minor annoyance, it can be the first sign of a problem with a range of severity. Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS) is marked by a greater loss of airway patency than snoring. Those who suffer from UARS are generally young, female and may experience gastroesophageal reflux disorder, asthma, depression and hormonal imbalances. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a serious and often life-threatening problem when sleepers stop breathing for 10 seconds or more (apnea), or breathe at a decreased rate and depth (hypopnea). Choking, gasping for breath, and long periods without breathing are all signs of Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Snoring, UARS, and OSA are all serious conditions that should not be ignored. Not only do they affect sleep, they are detrimental to an individual’s health.

Q. What does manual therapy and self-stretching do for back pain?

Q. What is Tickle Liposuction? A. Tickle Lipo is a safe and effective way to

A. Chronic low back pain is a common remove fat and create “high-definition” musculoskeletal condition that affects all ages. Complaints such as muscle pain, aches, and soreness are the primary reason a patient seeks care. A general cause of muscle pain is change of the body mechanic from body posture and lifestyle. Poor posture such as round shoulder, long time slumped back in the chair and sedentary lifestyle could build up pressure and stiffness on the back, which means muscles excessively contract with reduced flexibility. When the changes accumulate after a long period, you start to feel restricted movement. You don’t feel well because of increased pain due to poor circulation, which reduces oxygen and blood flow, this triggers pain.

sculpting and is ideal almost anywhere that you experience stubborn fat on your body, including the abdomen, hips, inner and outer thighs, and upper arms. The cutting-edge technology of Tickle Lipo is unique in that it generates a 3-dimensional vibration that breaks up fat. With this process, fat is more likely to survive if it is being transferred to add volume to breasts or buttocks. Unlike current liposuction techniques that utilize laser or ultrasound energy, the cannula used in Tickle Lipo stays cool, thus eliminating the risk of burning any tissue. Additionally, the hand piece has an automatic shut off when it approaches non-fatty tissue such as skin or muscle, thereby protecting the surrounding tissue from injury. These safety features enable Tickle Lipo to safely and more effectively remove fat.

For those who have experienced back injury, long term post injury recovery restricts movement and leads to stiffness of muscles, when this process continues, destructive changes may start with inflammatory reaction, if it’s not treated early, the spinal disc may bulge out, irritating the nerves, muscles and The many benefits of Tickle Lipo include a shorter procedure time with less pain and ligaments around. less downtime, less bruising, and less swelling Manual therapy and self-stretching techniques following the procedure. work on the areas of adhesion and stiffness. Q. I need hemorrhoid surgery, but my friends and family have frightened me from proceeding with surgery. Is there anything besides traditional excisional surgery?

A. Hemorrhoids are the result of excessive blood flow and larger diameter vessels that feed the normal arterial anal hemorrhoidal cushions. This can result in symptoms such as bleeding, pain, discomfort, swelling and prolapse (protruding of hemorrhoid tissue). Hemorrhoids will occur in 50 percent of the population by the age of 50. Eighty-five percent of the population will experience hemorrhoid symptoms in their lifetime. Most definitive procedures being done involve some form of excisional therapy. Today a non-excisional definitive surgical treatment is available called Trans Hemorrhoidal Dearterialization (THD). THD uses ultrasound to locate the hemorrhoidal arteries so that they may be ligated. The surgeon will then repair any prolapsed tissue if present, again using only suture. No tissue is cut or excised. THD is performed as an outpatient surgery and most patients will return to normal activities within 4 days. THD eliminates the most dreaded complications of hemorrhoid surgery such as anal stenosis and anal sphincter damage, which can lead to incontinence (loss of bowel control). Since THD is excision-less, and uses only sutures for repair, a patient’s pain is much less, recuperation is faster and healing is much quicker. Stop feeling embarrassed and stop feeling afraid. Get the procedure you need and get your life back.

Q. What is kyphoplasty and am I a candidate?

Q. Are you a candidate for a smile Q. The summer has damaged my skin.

A. Sometimes as we age, our bones become thin, resulting in osteoporosis. When this happens, the vertebral bodies that make up the spinal column become fragile and weak. Compression fractures can result from this, causing increased pain and debilitation. In addition, these fractures create a forward curvature in your mid-back area that pushes you to lean forward, changing your center of gravity. A procedure available that can help correct this, and almost instantly reduce the pain you are experiencing if the compression fracture is new, is Kyphoplasty.

A. Summertime is fun time for most of us, but the activities associated with summer can wreak havoc on the skin. Kyphoplasty is an innovative way to improve pain from the compression fracture and promotes restoration of the vertebral body. This is now available to be done in the outpatient setting, if your physician feels that you are a good candidate. Under X-ray guidance, the compression fractures are identified, and through a needle, a balloon is inflated and medical grade cement is placed. Once the cement has solidified, often the pain will be reduced and function and mobility will be restored. This is a fairly low-risk procedure that can help dramatically improve your quality of life. In addition to treating osteoporotic compression fractures, it can be utilized for traumatic compression fractures. A physician knowledgeable in this area can discuss with you if you are a candidate or not.

Q. What's with all the construction on the southwest portion of Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park south of the rhino exhibit along the new state route 303 expansion?

A. Travelers along the state route loop 303

surely have noticed some rather tall structures and several buildings being erected on the freeway's eastern edge just south of Northern Avenue. It's all part of our future expansion due to open around the first of the year with an American Adventure-land theme. This new 15-acre parcel will add several animal pastures, ponds and ride attractions including: a family roller coaster, 100-foot tall zip line, and a 100foot tall swing ride, and more. Plus there will be a Mexican restaurant and many north and South American species we've never previously displayed such as mountain lion, black bear, bison and others. There will also be a variety of primates from central and South America. The aerial rides will enable visitors to experience some of the animals’ eye-to-eye among the treetops! In preparation for the new animal exhibits, some of the smaller species have already begun arriving such as red, gray and even arctic foxes. The larger species will not begin to arrive until temperatures cool down later this fall. For those new to the Valley or just visiting Arizona, the zoo, aquarium and the recently added safari park increases Wildlife World's developed area to more than 80 acres and includes another dining option for guests. As a USDA licensed, private institution, accredited by the Zoological Association of America (ZAA) and the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks & Aquariums (AMMPA), Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park receives zero taxpayer funding.

Q. What can wheatgrass do for me?

A. For some folks, the word 'wheatgrass' conjures up images of juice bars and health food stores filled with health fanatics. But have you ever wondered just what it is and why so many folks are so eager to gulp down wheatgrass concoctions? They do know what they're doing. As for why the plant has so many fans—a major reason is that it packs a punch when it comes to nutrient density! Best Organic Wheatgrass contains at least 13 vitamins as well as all 21 amino acids (including the 9 "essential" amino acids that your body is unable to make for itself). You need all of these nutrients to power up your immune system to protect you from damaging diseases. Plus, it's a rich source of the plant pigment chlorophyll. This amazing body detoxifier provides the perfect alkaline balance for the acidic foods Americans commonly eat. This combination of nutrients many people believe is the secret to optimal health. And here's why many folks are convinced that wheatgrass could be an effective cancer treatment, too… According to the Livestrong organization, chemotherapy treatments suppress bone marrow activity (myelotoxicity) which can cause: •Decreased capacity for carrying oxygen throughout your body •Insufficient blood cells to boost your immune system •Decreased blood clotting ability Myelotoxicity significantly compromises a cancer patient's immune system. According to a 2007 study published in Nutrition and Cancer involving 60 breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatments, wheatgrass was shown to boost low levels of white blood cells, which helped prevent this condition from occurring.

Q. Do you have a good friend or family member whose behavior seems to be a little off lately?

A. After 19 years in the non-medical home

care business, we have noticed certain patterns develop seasonally. During the warmer summer months, one of them is a predominance of urinary tract infections (UTI). An ailment affects both men and women. It increases as the heat rises and the body needs better hydration. It really does not matter how much time you spend outside in the summer. Our bodies still need plenty of water. When temperatures soar, increased perspiration means an increased need for fluids. If you do not drink enough water, you will become dehydrated and there is a good possibility you will develop a UTI. One of the side effects of a UTI is a change in behavior. A person can experience elevated anger/agitation, confusion, listlessness, loss of appetite, depression and at worst, hallucinations. If you notice any of these signs, you may want to schedule a visit with your doctor. If you are referred to the emergency room, they will hydrate you, give you antibiotics and you will notice a difference very quickly. Every summer about 30 percent of our clients experience this common illness. We encourage everyone to watch for the warning signs. We would also like to encourage everyone to reach out to those in need, especially during the hot summer months when donations to food banks and other nonprofits typically decline.

A. No matter how wonderful your service or product is, if you don't advertise, nobody will know. The goal of advertising should be to cost effectively reach the largest audience possible to attract new patients/ customers. If done correctly, advertising can be a wonderful investment; if done poorly, advertising can become financially draining.

Q. I’m turning 65 in four months, when & how do I sign up for Medicare?

A. With 10,000 people turning 65 every day

in the United States, “when” and “how” to sign up for Medicare is a very important topic. Let’s start with the “when”: Medicare provides a seven-month window called the Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) that begins 3-months before and ends 3-months after your 65th birth month.

Here are four tips to start a successful Let’s assume you’ll turn 65 Dec. 10, your IEP advertising plan: will begin on Sept. 1 and end March 31. If you

1. Go after your target audience; in the right places! No product or service will appeal to everyone. Do research to understand who your audience is and determine what they read, watch and listen to. Find your market and be everything you can be to that audience. 2. Highlight your competitive advantage; what makes you unique? Find your competitive edge. Too many ads highlight all the features and services and fail to sell their specific benefits. Unless you highlight these benefits, how can you deliver value to potential patients/customers? 3. Establish your image. You have a car full of hungry kids and there are only two places to stop for lunch; you recognize the McDonald’s arches but you have never heard of the other place. Where will you stop? Image counts; don’t lose a chance to make an impression.

sign up during the first 3-months, your Medicare effective date will be Dec. 1. Delaying enrollment will also delay your Medicare effective date. Assuming again your birth date is Dec. 10, by delaying your Medicare enrollment until January (although still within your seven-month window); your Medicare benefits will not be effective until March 1. Most people enroll in Medicare before their 65th birth month to avoid any delays for coverage. Now, let’s answer the “how” question. Social Security handles this job and there are three ways to enroll: 1. A phone appointment by calling Social Security at 1.800.772-1213. 2. An in-person session at your local Social Security office. 3. Online at www.socialsecurity.gov/Medicareonly/

4. You have to spend money to make money. Advertising is not the place to cut corners. Doing so affects the bottom line. Successful advertising may cost some money, but that is because it works.

Once enrolled in Medicare you’ll want to complete your coverage by selecting a Medigap policy plus a Part D plan or enrolling in a Medicare Advantage plan that includes prescription drug coverage.

FAMILY, KIDS & RELATIONSHIPS By Dr. Nancy D. O'Reilly, co-author of Leading Women: 20 Influential Women Share Their Secrets to Leadership, Business and Life

Low-Tech Ways to Build Stronger Bonds Nothing makes for a rich, fulfilling life quite like really great relationships. Our bonds with family members, friends and (to a surprising extent) coworkers provide support, love, joy, and companionship and foster personal growth. They are vital to our emotional and even physical health. But have you noticed the quality of your relationships might be declining? And have you asked yourself why? Chances are you're just not putting in the time and effort it takes. Relationships seem harder to achieve now. As we've gotten more 'connected' (in the Facebook sense), we've somehow gotten less connected (in the human sense). So if you're feeling the depressing effects of this relationship deficit, what's to be done about it? Here are a few tips for getting started:

Know that while there's nothing wrong with technology, it should supplement (not dominate) your relationships. This is equally true in friendship and in business. Easier and faster isn't better. Real relationships demand that we spend more time face to face or at least having actual phone conversations. Make a pledge to spend (i.e., waste) less time on social media. To break the habit, start setting limits— say, one or two hours a week. This will prevent you from getting 'lost' and wasting time in the virtual world that you could be spending on nurturing real-world relationships. Reach out and touch someone. (There's a reason it's not reach out and text someone.)Yes, texting is convenient, but really, it's nothing more than an exchange of dry facts. A phone call yields details about your friend's life and creates opportunities to connect emotionally. We text because we feel we don't have time for a conversation. But be honest: Don't you have 10 minutes while washing dishes or folding laundry? Bring back the lost art of letter writing. This notion may seem outlandish in the "easy" days of high-tech communication, but the rarity of letters is what makes them so effective. The time and thought it takes to craft a handwritten letter really says, "I'm thinking about you." Even a well-chosen card with a short but meaningful note is incredibly powerful. 44

August 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

If you haven't seen your "best friend" in a year, make a date now. We can insist all day that we cherish someone but if we won't go out of our way to see them, is it really true? Have you ever heard the line 'Show me your calendar and your checkbook and I'll show you your priorities'? It's so true. And no matter how busy you are—there's no way every day of the year is so booked up that you can't find a few hours to hang out with a dear friend. Include a friend in something you're already doing. (Exercise is always good.) For instance, you might invite your friend to join your Zumba class, or meet at the rec center for a power walk while your kid is at baseball practice. If it's a recurring event, so much the better—she will become part of the fabric of your life, and the regular doses of time together will deepen your friendship. Make a big deal out of your friends' important milestones. Whether you're celebrating good news (a promotion or a new home) or expressing sympathy over not-so-good news (a divorce or the loss of a loved one), go out of your way to acknowledge what has happened. Set aside an evening to make a phone call that you don't try to rush. Or send a thoughtful letter. Or take him or her out to dinner. The idea is to let your friend know, 'This is important to you, so it's important to me.'

That thing that's been bothering you about your friend? Get it out on the table. No one is saying to be confrontational. But also don't allow your worries to go unspoken or for resentments to fester. Withholding your genuine feelings puts up a wall between people. Real relationships can handle the truth. In business relationships, sincerely seek out what you can do to help the other person. Rather than asking, in effect, "What can you do for me?" ask, "What can we create together?" You're creating a dynamic that works better, and feels better, than the shallow, selfserving business card exchanges that most people think of as networking. Sure, connect with people on LinkedIn. But call them when you do. Sure, LinkedIn is a valuable tool for connecting with colleagues and looking for jobs. Yet too often, we use it as a quick and easy substitute for true relationship building. Go ahead and reach out on LinkedIn or even ask for a recommendation—but don't let that be all you do. Call and ask first. It will make an impact and you will be remembered. Yes, email is convenient, but for complex problems, pick up the phone (or even meet in person). There is absolutely no substitute for the "give and take" of a conversation to clarify crucial issues, resolve misunderstandings and innovate solutions. Plus, regular conversations add a deeper dimension to your business relationships that may serve you well in the future. With friends, family and biz associates, get mindful. Tune out all distractions and really focus on what the other person is saying. Don't just halflisten or go through the motions. Often when we're talking to another person our mind wanders. Instead of giving him or her full attention, we may be focusing on what we're going to say next or formulating our own story to try to trump his or hers. From time to time, take "work" friendships out of the office. We spend so much time with coworkers that it's natural to develop a strong bond. But even if you both love your job, talking about work projects all the time can make for a one-dimensional relationship. Shake things up by meeting for after-work drinks or having dinner now and then (and don't let the conversation drift back to the office).

Real relationships demand that we spend more time face to face or at least having actual phone conversations. Once in a while, show up in person at the bank, or the insurance office, or the accounting firm. Sure, you can often handle this business over the phone but don't settle for impersonal transactions every time. These are relationships that really can have a big impact on your life, so it just makes sense to nurture them. Your banker, your insurance rep, your accountant— they all have a professional interest in serving you, but they'll almost certainly do a better job for those they like. We all do this. Here's the thing: It's natural to want to improve efficiency, to conserve our energy, to make our lives easier and less stressful. It probably has something to do with the survival instinct. Yet a great life is about more than survival—and when we neglect relationships, we're cheating ourselves of the full human experience. azhealthandliving.com |August 2015

Talking to Children about Alcohol Many people consume alcohol when attending summer parties, holiday gatherings or weddings. Children in attendance may see adults drinking and having a good time and wonder why alcohol is off-limits to them. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism says that parents can have a major impact on their children's drinking habits by influencing children's values and decisions about drinking. Alcohol can affect both the body and the mind, and parents who want their kids to approach alcohol responsibly when they are of legal drinking age can teach their youngsters about the ways alcohol can influence their health. The NIAA states that alcohol is used by more young people than tobacco or illicit drugs. A person who begins drinking as a young teen is four times more likely to develop alcohol dependence than someone who waits until adulthood to try a drink.

Alcohol and its effects Many kids and their parents are not overly concerned about alcohol, which does not carry the same stigma as illegal drugs. When consumed in small amounts, alcohol may not seem very dangerous, but even small quantities can affect the body. Alcohol is a depressant, which slows down the body and makes a person feel relaxed. With more alcohol, movements become clumsy and uncoordinated. It also interferes with decision-making abilities and could lead to risky behavior. As alcohol slows reaction time, driving under the influence can be deadly. The liver is responsible for filtering alcohol out of the blood. With greater quantities of alcohol, it can take longer for the liver to do its job. Over time, alcohol consumption can damage the liver.

or wine may be considered "safer" than hard liquor, but each has the same effect on the body. It can take anywhere from two to three hours for a single drink to leave a person's system and the process cannot be sped up. Young people have smaller bodies, and alcohol can affect them differently. It may only take a small amount of alcohol to cause considerable impairment. Plus, young bodies are still developing, and alcohol may have an effect on a maturing brain, leading to long-lasting intellectual effects. People tend to not realize how much alcohol is affecting them. Overconsumption of alcohol can lead to risky and potentially dangerous behavior. Parents concerned about their children and their consumption of alcohol can present the facts and urge kids to wait until they are adults before trying alcohol. Waiting until adulthood can minimize some of the health implications of drinking early.

Building Self Esteem in Kids

By Dana Vela, President of Sunrise Preschools, www.sunrisepreschools.com

Parents of toddlers and preschoolers will often describe their children in conversation by saying “oh, he is shy” or “she can be a real character.” Children seem to be born with their own personality, and we all delight in watching their personalities grow and develop with their little bodies. Healthy self esteem also grows and develops during the early years, and children’s caregivers, parents, and grandparents can do much more than just hope that they are doing all of the right things to help build a healthy self esteem in their little ones. Children flourish in home and preschool settings where they benefit from having both peers and adults that are good role models. Self confident children feel that they truly belong and are encouraged to be independent. The adults in a child’s life can easily contribute to a healthy self esteem by noticing their child’s strengths, such as “wow, you run fast, or can you show me again how you play that drum to the beat?” Identifying strengths and encouraging talents by celebrating the small successes can go a long way toward raising a child who is happy, content, and self confident. • Try new things! Listen to new music, try out new instruments, learn new dance moves and play new sports. Celebrate success and laugh at and learn from small mistakes. Children look to you to learn that sometimes things don’t go quite right- and it’s okay to keep trying until you learn new skills. • Provide opportunities for children to explore things on their own. Soft clay, new markers, objects to trace and scissors to cut are all easy activities for the kitchen table. Notice hard work and success! When you see that a child has grasped the new skill you can make the activities a bit more challenging. • Encourage your child to engage with other children in a social setting. Preschools and child care settings provide physical, social, and academic experiences. In a classroom setting your child will get the opportunity to master new skills while working as part of a small or large group. Children cheerfully celebrate each other’s successes, contributing to a healthy self esteem. azhealthandliving.com |August 2015

How to Get Noticed in a Crowded Job Market Finding a new job is never an easy task. That task grew even more difficult over the last half decade, when a struggling economy forced many companies to lay off workers and institute hiring freezes. As a result, unemployment numbers rose, and many out-of-work men and women found themselves searching for ways to stand out among a crowded pool of applicants. Standing out in a crowded job market has always been tough, but many professionals find it even more difficult to get noticed now, when many companies request prospective employees apply for job postings via the Internet. That process can be frustrating, as even the most qualified applicants can easily get lost among the myriad of workers all applying for the same position. But as daunting as finding a new job may seem to those looking for work, there are ways to stand out among the masses.

Go the extra mile when sending your application. Many online job postings provide a link or an email address where applicants can fill out an application or send their resumes. This is a necessary step, and applicants should follow the directions in the posting. But applicants who really want to get noticed can take the extra step of finding the contact information for the company's hiring manager and sending their resume directly to that person's email address. Include the title of the position you're applying for in the subject line of your email, and cut and paste your cover letter into the body of the email. In addition to sending your email to the company's hiring manager, consider CC'ing the person who might be your boss if you were to get the position. Tighten things up. Your resume should reflect your work experience, but you want to focus primarily on the experience and skills that are relevant to the position. You can list past positions or internships you've had, but keep the synopsis of those positions brief if they bear little relevance to the position for which you're applying. The main focus of your resume 48

| azhealthandliving.com

should be the things you have done in the past that make you the best candidate for this job. This might change as you apply for various positions, but tailor each resume to each specific position.

Make your resume download-friendly. Applying for positions but getting little response despite your qualifications? Chances are your resume might not be download-friendly. Bullet points and boxes might look good to you, but if the hiring manager on the receiving end of your resume does not have the same version of the program you're using that resume might look like a scrambled mess by the time it's downloaded. In such instances your resume is almost certain to end up in the scrap heap, no matter how qualified you might be. When uploading your resume to a company website or emailing it to a hiring manager, choose a format they can easily download. A PDF, for example, is a format that's easy to download and unlikely to scramble.

Beware of hyperlinks. Adding hyperlinks to a resume can be hit or miss. When it's a hit, a hiring manager can click on a link in your resume and be taken directly to samples of your work. However, if you're asked to submit your resume via an online application instead of sending it directly to a hiring manager's email address, then those same hyperlinks might be relegating your application to the trash bin before it's ever seen. That's because the database may be programmed to associate any documents with hyperlinks as spam, in which case the hiring manager will never see your application or resume. Hyperlinks can be useful and help you stand out, but only when they're employed under the right circumstances. Include social media profiles. More and more companies want employees who are familiar with social media, which can work to an applicant’s advantage or prove detrimental. If you have been responsible regarding your use of social media, conducting yourself in a professional matter and even benefiting your existing employer, share these profiles with potential employers. But if you have traditionally used social media purely as a social tool and not in a professional manner, then it bears little relevance to your job search and likely won't help you stand out for the right reasons. Standing out in a crowded job is rarely easy. But savvy professionals can employ a few tricks of the trade to stand out as they search for their next jobs.

How to Start a Small Business Starting a business is a dream for many men and women. Instead of reporting to a boss and following the particular hierarchy of a company, entrepreneurs can set their own rules and hours. But starting a business does not just involve putting an open-for-business sign in the window. It involves preparation to ensure the business succeeds and is in accordance with laws and guidelines set by the local government. The first step in starting a business is to figure out what the business hopes to accomplish. It is a wise idea to draft a business plan that clearly states your goals and what you hope to accomplish on a daily basis. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, a business plan should include a listing of how the business will be marketed, who your expected competition will be, the names of your expected personnel, and the amount of available startup capital at your disposal. A business plan is a good document to have and one that is often necessary for prospective owners who hope to secure a small-business loan from a bank or private investors. Once the business plan has been developed, take advantage of any free training and counseling services that might be available. Such services offers strategies for a successful business, and established business owners might even participate by offering advice and answering questions. Learn from their successes and failures and when establishing your own business. It's also imperative that prospective business owners decide which type of legal entity their business will be. These include sole proprietorship, partnership, limited liability company (LLC), corporation, S corporation, nonprofit or cooperative. An attorney who specializes in business law can help you establish the legal structure that will be the most beneficial to you. You also will have to find a business location. While there are brick-and-mortar businesses opening every day, a large number of new businesses begin on the Internet. It is very difficult to determine just how many online businesses there are since the reach of the Internet is so vast. However, the low overhead of an online business and the increasing propensity for individuals and shoppers to spend time online makes the Internet an attractive venue for a business startup. 50 August 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

Small-business owners also must register their businesses with their local governments. To do so, you will first need to apply for an identification number. This identification number is a 15-character identifier of your business. In the United States, the Internal Revenue Service will issue an employer identification number, or EIN, also known as a tax ID number. Much like a Social Security number identifies an individual, an EIN identifies a particular business. Once you have this number, you will be able to open up bank accounts in the business' name as well as register with your local government to pay payroll taxes and any sales tax necessary. If permits or licenses are necessary for your business, you will have to apply for those as well. Prospective business owners within the United States can visit www.sba.gov/ licenses-and-permits to determine which documents they will need. Prospective small-business owners can also apply for a business credit card and open up a business bank account. These accounts will help you keep your business funds separate from your personal funds. They are necessary to establish business credit as well as to purchase supplies and make payroll payments. Starting a business can be a rewarding venture and help individuals become their own boss. Not every business will become a success, but starting out on the right foot can help.

How to Find Investors for Your Business By MS

One of the biggest concerns for many startup businesses is finding the money to get the business off the ground. Finding investors for a business idea often involves patience, resolve and a strong belief in your idea. Few startups can survive without some investment capital from outside sources, and the following are a few tips to help today's entrepreneurs find financial backing for their ideas.

Know what you need. Once you've explained your idea, a potential investor, whether it's a venture capitalist, a trusted friend or even a family member, will want to know exactly how much money you need. The more money you need, the more people you're likely to have to approach. If the amount of capital you need is relatively small, then you can seek the help of friends and family members. This might prove especially rewarding should your business eventually succeed, as you will have raised investment capital from the people you trust and rewarded that trust with a healthy return on their investments. Keeping things in the family definitely has its benefits, but it can also cause problems, especially if the amount of capital you need to raise is substantial. In such instances, seeking the help of a venture capitalist might be your best bet. Venture capitalists not only invest in ideas for a living, but also if you work with a venture capitalist, your relationships with family and friends won't grow strained if your idea or plan falters and the returns on investment are less than expected.

Invest in yourself, but don't overdo it. Letting potential investors know you've invested your own money in the project can help, but you don't want to overdo it. Potential investors might hesitate to invest with someone who sank their entire savings into an idea. Such hesitation occurs because investors don't want decisions affecting the company to be made by someone who is concerned about losing their entire nest egg. Such decisions are not always rational, and they can affect how you approach the business. So while it's good to invest in yourself and your idea, don't overdo it to the point where potential investors might see your business as a red flag instead of a worthwhile investment.

Develop a detailed plan. Potential investors will want to see a detailed business plan that includes how the business will be run and how their money, should they ultimately choose to invest, will be used. Include a forecast of expenses, which includes materials needed as well as what you expect to pay in rent for office and manufacturing space. This plan should also include an earnings projection, which can point to when an investor can reasonably expect to start seeing some return on his or her investment. If you have no experience in developing a business plan, then you might want to consult a business advisor. This will cost you money, but it might make the difference between finding solid investors or sitting on your idea.

Be enthusiastic about the future. Enthusiasm is important when seeking investors. Potential investors already have money, and they won't want to invest in an idea with a goal of breaking even. Explain to potential investors that you have a long-term vision for your business, one that isn't just for survival but, ideally, expansion. You don't want to go overboard here, as you don't want to make it appear as though you're putting the cart before the horse. But you don't want to project a lack of confidence in your ideas or a lack of vision for how you want your business to grow. Enthusiasm about the future can pique a potential investor's interest, whereas an investment opportunity that doesn't figure to yield much of a return will turn investors off. azhealthandliving.com | August 2015

PLAN & SAVE

career, business & Finance By Jay York, senior digital marketing strategist for EMSI Public Relations

Hashtags & Social Media Not so many years ago, many people probably paid little attention to that pound sign on the computer keyboard. You know, the one that looks like this: #. Then along came Twitter and what we have come to call the “hashtag,” and social media marketing was changed forever. Yet not everyone takes advantage of hashtags the way they should, and that’s unfortunate because if you are not using hashtags you are missing out on exposure for you and your brand. When you are on social media sites such as Twitter or Instagram, your goal should be to become part of the conversation. The hashtag allows more people to find your contributions to that conversation. Without them, you miss out on lots of eyes that could be viewing your content. For example, let’s say 1,000 people follow you on Twitter. Not counting retweets, only 1,000 people will see your posts if you don’t use a hashtag. Add the hashtag, though, and you start picking up momentum because the post has the potential of being seen by, and retweeted by, any number of people. A common hashtag, such as #love, can position your post to be seen by potentially millions of people. But be warned. While there are great benefits to hashtags, there also are pitfalls. Hashtags don’t come with exclusivity. Anyone can use them, so a hashtag can become a weapon that works both for you and against you. Critics of your brand, or just the usual assortment of Internet trolls, may attempt to hijack your hashtag, putting you or your business in a bad light. A prime example of a hijacked hashtag happened a few years ago when McDonald’s, apparently hoping for a flattering conversation about the restaurant chain, introduced #McDStories on Twitter. #McDStories went viral, but not in a good way as the Twitter world had a field day tweeting unflattering tales of their alleged bad experiences with the restaurant. Don’t let such cautionary tales deter you, though. March boldly into hashtagging, but as you do keep in mind these suggestions for getting the most out of your efforts. 52 August 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

Use proprietary hashtags. One of the advantages to a proprietary hashtag, such as “Orange is the New Black’s” hashtag #OITNB, is that it is linked directly to your brand. These hashtags typically are not used as widely as a more generic hashtag, but the goal is to brand yourself through the hashtag with the hope it could go viral.

Don’t overdo it. A post littered with too many hashtags can be difficult to read, so your message might become obscured as your followers see what appears to be gibberish. Perhaps you saw the skit Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon once performed in which they spoofed the device’s overuse by lacing their spoken conversation with seemingly endless hashtags. It was hilarious and annoying all at the same time. Twitter itself suggests using no more than two hashtags per tweet. Certainly, three should be the very maximum on Twitter. A different etiquette exists on Instagram, though, and most Instagram followers will tolerate excess hashtags. Meanwhile, although hashtags can be used on Facebook, there’s little reason to include even one. That’s not the way people use that social media site.

Think geographically. If you are a local company that depends mainly on local clientele, a hashtag that links to your location works well. Hashtags such as #Seattle or #Bangor drop you into numerous conversations about your hometown. Since social media has become such a vital element of any comprehensive marketing strategy, understanding all of the nuances is critical. A hashtag may not look like much, but it’s really a powerful tool that is a double-edged sword. If used correctly it can greatly bolster your marketing reach. Used incorrectly, it can have adverse effects or unintended consequences. With social media, your hashtag is your brand, so use it wisely.

How Social Media Can Affect Your Career By MS

Be careful with regard to how you use social media, which can either positively or negatively affect your employment prospects depending on what you share. Social media has become an integral society. Millions of people around the media to connect with one another. But also can be a detriment, particularly to seeking employment.

part of modern world use social this valuable tool men and women

What a person says or does on social media can come back to haunt them with regard to the impression they create with prospective employers. Questionable antics and comments may reflect negatively on a person without him or her even realizing it. According to a study by Reppler, a social media monitoring service, 91 percent of employers use social media channels such as Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn to screen prospective employees. Many people are completely unaware how others view them through their social media profiles and usage, but social media profiles give away more information about a person's character and personality than many people would ever imagine. Even seemingly innocent remarks and observations can be misconstrued. Use of profanity or offering commentary on controversial subjects may be a person's right. However, such comments may not sit well with prospective employers. Some may think the solution is not to have profiles on the popular social media sites. But avoiding social media entirely can send the wrong message to prospective employers. It may suggest that you are not a person who is current with the latest trends in technology and may give employers the impression that you are not adept at keeping up with the changing times. The key is finding the right balance with social media. The following are a few tips to ensure your social media usage does not do more harm than good. · Do not post or tweet information that should be kept private. If you would not tell intimate secrets to another person, especially an employer, do not convey these details to your group of "friends."

· Recognize that it's not always your comments that can affect perceptions of you. The friends you choose to accept and socialize with via social media can impact how others view you. If friends are prone to vulgarity and offcolor commentary, employers may surmise that this type of behavior is acceptable to you. Screen friends and block those who do not meet your standards. · Know that security features on social media applications change frequently. It's important to know just how private your information may be. For example, if you are tagged in another person's photo, people outside of your friends' list may be able to see that image. You have to police your sites and lock down the information as you see fit, only posting what is appropriate for the general public. · Do not complain about a job or boss publicly. Even if your boss is not on your list of friends, he or she may still learn about your comments through gossip. While verbal complaints with others may not be accurately tracked back to you, text is hard evidence to discredit. · Use social media as a networking tool to find other likeminded individuals in the same fields. Join industry-based groups and organizations so that you can share your ideas. Further expanding your reach through blogs and websites can also help your job-hunt. Social media is here to stay, making many details of people's lives more public, so exercise caution with social media so your career is not negatively affected. azhealthandliving.com | August 2015

ENJOY LIFE

Kristen Wiig

The famous comedian continues to take Hollywood by storm Active in Hollywood for more than a decade, popular funny woman Kristen Wiig started out cracking jokes on Saturday Night Live and is now dominating the big screen. With titles like Knocked Up, Bridesmaids, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and even the animated film Despicable Me on her resume, she showcases a versatile comedic talent that stands out among other leading ladies. Wiig’s start in comedy was a humble one – she began at the Groundlings in Los Angeles, like many up and coming comedians. It was there that she was cast by Saturday Night Live. In 2013, she recalled the experience to The New York Times: “[I told] my parents, because they’d been supporting me all through it. It was nice to be able to explain what I’d been doing for the past five years. At the Groundlings, [Ms. Wiig’s parents] were like, “So, you do this show every week, and you don’t get paid?” And I’m like, “No, that’s not what it’s about.” They were, of course, extremely happy. We were all nervous and excited and fearful. It was really taking a step off a ledge and not knowing what was on the other side. You just hope people are laughing on the way down.” Fast-forward to today and Wiig has been busier than ever with recent films, including The Diary of a Teenage Girl and The Martian. This fall, fans will also see her in an upcoming comedy called Masterminds, based on a true story of bank robbery gone wrong. “Some may ask why base a comedy on a bank robbery, but what many don't realize is that this is also the funniest case in history as it was filled with comical missteps by a group of mostly rookie criminals,” according 54

to a recent article on GospelHerald.com. "It's definitely based on the characters and what happened," Wiig says to the outlet. "But, of course, it's a comedy and it's Jared. His style is very specific. We wanted to make a good movie." Another exciting project on the horizon for Wiig is her role in the remake of Ghostbusters, due out next year. Another article on GospelHerald.com perfectly summed up fans’ excitement about the cast and film: “So, here are the names of the new Ghostbusters, and who will be playing who. Erin Gilbert, played by Kristen Wiig, Jillian Holtzmann, played by Kate McKinnon, Abby Yates, played by Melissa McCarthy, and Patty Tolan, played by Leslie Jones. Can't you just picture them all? Aren't you imagining everything about them based on those names? Anticipation: BUILT.” During her impressive career Wiig has been nominated for several accolades, including several Emmy Awards for her work on Saturday Night Live. In addition to comedy and acting, Wiig has become an accomplished director and writer as well. “In 2011, Wiig co-wrote and starred in Bridesmaids (2011), along with Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolph and Rose Byrne. The film was a box office hit and won several awards, plus earned two Oscar nominations (Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay), and two Golden Globes nominations (Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical and Best Actress),” cites IMDb.com. Several sources note that she will be debuting as a director as an upcoming comedy soon; details are still in the works. And, despite her busy schedule, according to LookToTheStars.org, Wiig has supported Amnesty International and PETA. In fact, Wiig is well-known for her vegetarianism. Given the momentum she’s kept up over the past few years, we’re excited to see what the future holds for this leading lady of laughs. azhealthandliving.com | August 2015

Quickly Recover from Exercise Aches & Pains The old saying, "no pain, no gain," is not without its grains of truth. Moderate soreness in the muscles may indicate that time spent in the gym is working, but sharp pains may be indicative of injury. Workout soreness that persists can derail workout plans and may turn some people off from exercise. As the body becomes acclimated to certain exercises, soreness may be less prevalent, and there are ways for people to speed up their rates of recovery.

Why do muscles get sore? Muscle soreness can occur a day or two after exercising. Doctors used to think it resulted from a buildup of lactic acid in muscles, but now they say that it is actually muscle damage that is taking place. Exercise that pushes the muscles affects the fibers in muscle tissue, especially specialized structures that hold the fibers together. When you exercise, you are breaking down or tearing muscle, and the body produces swelling and soreness as part of the healing process.

Warm up; cool down

When you exercise, you are breaking down or tearing muscle, and the body produces swelling and soreness as part of the healing process.

One way to prevent extreme soreness is to follow proper guidelines before and after a workout. Stretching and gradually building to your peak workout can help. This helps the body acclimate incrementally to the workout. Afterward, stretching and a cool-down period can help lengthen the muscles once more and ease any discomfort that might follow.

swelling may help your body recover. Such foods and beverages may include tart cherry juice, leafy greens, whole grains, fatty fish and beets.

Consume some post-workout protein

Know your limits

Before retiring after a tough workout, consume a light, protein-rich snack. The protein will help the body repair muscles overnight. Extra protein at breakfast also can give muscles the necessary fuel to start rebuilding.

It's good to push yourself every so often to improve fitness goals. However, overdoing it may mean extreme soreness, or worse, an injury that is difficult to recover from. Experts recommend exercising every other day to give muscles the chance to heal. If you choose to hit the gym daily, try to work different muscle groups each day. If you feel muscles twitching during workouts, reduce the weight.

Avoid Contraction of Foodborne Illnesses

By Ms

Stomach bugs are rarely pleasant. Such bugs can last several days and result in missed school or work and even turn into something more serious, like dehydration. Many stomach bugs, whether they are the result of a virus or germs brought home from school, may be the result of poorly handled food. Foodborne illnesses cause about 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,200 deaths nationwide each year, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Under the right conditions, various bacteria can proliferate in food and result in bugs characterized by bouts of nausea or vomiting. While many food-related ailments are innocuous, one never knows when something ominous could be lurking in the foods one has eaten. In many cases, preventing foodrelated illness needs to begin even before food is brought into the home.

At the store Shop at stores that take proper food handling seriously. Look for clean stores that properly refrigerate foods. Inspect frozen or refrigerated foods to make sure nothing appears open or tampered with. If food is packed in clear wrapping, check to see that the food does not have a lot of ice crystals, which may mean it was thawed out, and then refrozen. Select canned foods that are in packages without dents or bulges. Dents may compromise the can's seam and let in contaminants, while bulges may indicate improper sealing or processing, contaminating the food inside the can. Shop for perishable foods last so you minimize the amount of time they are without refrigeration. If you expect that it will take you longer than an hour to get home, consider transporting foods in insulated bags or a cooler to preserve their freshness.

At home Do not leave foods that need to be chilled sitting out for long periods. Refrigerate and freeze foods promptly after long periods. Refrigerate and freeze foods promptly after unpacking them from the store or after a meal is over. Do

A food thermometer helps accurately gauge food doneness to prevent illness from undercooking. not defrost foods on the kitchen counter. Instead, use the refrigerator or run frozen packages under water. All fresh produce should be rinsed thoroughly before use, even if stores say the foods have already been washed. Produce can retain bacteria from the fields where it was grown. Also wash the skins or rinds of foods before peeling or slicing, or you may transfer bacteria to the flesh of the food. Wash and disinfect hands, utensils, cutting boards, and any other surfaces after handling raw meats and poultry. Try to contain juices from meats so they do not get all over countertops. Always use separate utensils for preparing uncooked meats and produce. Cook foods to the recommended temperature and check with a food thermometer. Keep in mind that some foods may cook unevenly, especially in microwaves. Stir and keep cooking to ensure even heat distribution. Do not overload the refrigerator and freezer; otherwise, they may not chill foods sufficiently. Check that the appliance is working properly. Avoiding foodborne illnesses requires diligence at the store and at home. With care, members of the household can remain healthy. azhealthandliving.com | August 2015

STAY HEALTHY

aging well By John Pankauski, author of Pankauski's Trustee's Guide: 10 Steps to Family Trustee Excellence

Family Feuds & Inheritance The recently deceased don’t always ingratiate themselves with their survivors when it comes time to read the will. People want to control things from the grave, not just throw a bunch of money in a beneficiary’s lap. It’s their money so that’s their right. But family members aren’t always crazy about how the deceased divided up the money or, if the inheritance was put into a trust, the restrictions that are placed on how the money is spent. And often ill feelings among family members can bubble to the surface when money is at stake. Often, an inheritance isn’t doled out immediately. Instead, it’s placed in a trust with a trustee to oversee it, making decisions on when and how to distribute the money based on the terms of the trust. In many situations that works out fine. But in seriously dysfunctional families, that can make a bad situation borderline intolerable. Any number of factors can lead to family feuds or general disgruntlement over an inheritance. Here are just a few:

money to create a financial stew into which the beneficiaries are thrown.

Sense of entitlement. Many beneficiaries have a

Often, because beneficiaries don’t like it that a trustee gets to make decisions on when and how they get a portion of their inheritance, family members will seek counsel and try to “bust the trust.”

misplaced sense of entitlement to an inheritance. They just expect that mom or dad will leave them money or property. In their minds, it’s what they have coming to them. The truth is, you can dispose of your property any way you want. There is no right to an inheritance and just about anyone can be disinherited. So if people want to leave their money in a trust for a family pet, or bequeath everything to a neighbor, a mistress or a charity, they have every right to do so, assuming they are competent and know what they are doing. It’s their money. They can do with it as they wish. Other than dealing with a spouse, there are almost no restrictions.

The audacity of the trust. Family members often become frustrated and angry when they realize they inherited money, but it’s in a trust and there are strings attached. The beneficiaries view trusts as handcuffs on their money. A trust takes all those family members’ personal feelings and emotions, all that baggage, and adds 60

An implied accusation of financial irresponsibility. At some point it may begin to dawn on beneficiaries that one reason the inheritance was placed in a trust is that the deceased didn’t view them as responsible with money. That may seem insulting, but it doesn’t have to be. Many would argue that most people are irresponsible with money, particularly a large sum of inherited money that appears out of the blue, much like winning a lottery. Sometimes at least a portion of the family animosity might be avoided by better planning when the will is being written and the trust created. When beneficiaries don’t get along, it may make more sense to cut their financial ties by either creating multiple separate shares within the trust or creating separate trusts altogether.

Long-Term Care Stereotypes By Chris Orestis, senior health care advocate, expert, and CEO of Life Care Funding

The statistics are staggering. About 10,000 baby boomers turn 65 each day and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that more than 70 percent of people over 65 will require long-term care services at some point.

Change Your Thoughts. Change Your Words. Change Your World.

But few people prepare for this inevitable part of life that can drain a family both emotionally and financially. Sponsored by

Over the years, family members gravitate naturally to roles that fall into several stereotypes.

Caretaker – This person provides care for the loved one at home and, without realizing it, becomes a fulltime caregiver. Usually, this is a spouse or an adult child, most often a daughter.

Bookkeeper – This person focuses on the financial

aspects, trying to determine what assets or insurance policies are available to help with the costs of care.

Chauffeur – This family member drives the loved one to

appointments, runs errands, makes grocery runs, and eventually may drive the aging loved one to tour assistedliving facilities.

Guardian – This family member takes on such roles as

power of attorney or trustee, assuming the legal responsibilities within the family.

Denier – This person can’t accept or admit that the loved one, or they themselves, need care.

Know-It-All – Most annoying of all, this family member

constantly questions decisions, or lobs suggestions from the backbench, but isn’t near the situation or involved hands-on. With such a lineup, it’s easy for resentments to build, but that needs to be avoided because the focus should be on the aging loved one and easing the transition if a decision is made to move into a nursing home or assisted-living facility. azhealthandliving.com |August 2015

STAY HEALTHY

aging well By Michael Bivona, a retired CPA and author of Retiring? Beware!! Don’t Run Out of Money and Don’t Become Bored

Working Your Way Through Retirement Many people who waited eagerly for the day they could stop working and enjoy a leisurely retirement find that the reality doesn’t match their dreams. Some people are not prepared financially or mentally to retire. A part-time job provides a possible solution for both deficiencies – giving a boost to your bank account and a mission to your daily living that another round of golf just isn’t supplying. Many people don’t realize that they may live 30 to 40 years after leaving the workforce. The amount of money required to sustain a comfortable lifestyle is staggering. Meanwhile, boredom becomes an insidious enemy, even for retirees with a beloved pastime they hoped to make the centerpiece of their existence. Playing tennis or lying on the beach is relaxing and pleasurable when done once a week or a couple of times a month. But the novelty wears off quickly when it becomes a person’s primary occupation. Here are a few part-time job possibilities that could work out nicely for retirees, whether their needs are financial or they just want a place to go every day to mingle with coworkers:

Cruise ship employment. This is an ideal way to combine a part-time job with pleasure. The ships provide room and board and the use of their facilities when the workers are not plying their trade. Possible jobs onboard cruise ships include golf instructors, scuba diving/water sports instructors, bridge instructors, arts and crafts instructors, caricature artists, dance instructors and photographers. The opportunities on cruise ships are endless. Where else can retirees spend time teaching what they enjoy while traveling around the world, eating wonderful food and earning extra pocket money?

Librarian. Part-time work at the local library could be a great opportunity for anyone who enjoys being around both books and other people who appreciate them. The duties include answering customers’ questions, shelving books, helping patrons check out books, tracking overdue materials, cataloging, and keeping an eye out for lost and damaged items. 62

Bookkeeper. If you have the right experience with bookkeeping and computer applications, then this can be a good possibility. Usually, the opportunities are with small businesses and entail a full sweep of financial record keeping. Duties may include establishing and maintaining inventory database systems, tracing accounts receivable and accounts payable, maintaining checking and savings accounts, producing financial reports and following up on delinquent accounts.

Virtual assistant. This is a job you can do from your home. The main purpose of a virtual assistant is to assist busy business executives who do not have in-house staff to attend to various administrative functions. These positions have become available due to small companies trying to keep permanent overhead costs down. Training programs are available at community colleges, many of which offer online certifications. The duties of an assistant include making travel arrangements, sending out letters and providing other support services, which are easily handled remotely via email and telephone. If you look around, there is a multitude of opportunities out there. First try to find something you have a passion for. But if you aren’t successful with that, widen the search because there are plenty of other possibilities that will put extra money in your pocketbook.

Steps for Turning a Real Estate or Business Sale into the Ideal Retirement By Chris Snyder and Haitham “Hutch” Ashoo, co-authors of Exiting Strategies: The CEO’s Seven Critical Steps To Cashing-Out of a Business, Managing and Preserving Wealth

Throughout life, we encounter a number of “financial impact points”— pivotal events with the potential to make our dreams come true. The sale of a business or real estate is one of those. With the right planning, it can become your ideal retirement. Unfortunately, sellers often make fundamental mistakes: They underestimate how much money they’ll need for their retirement; they overvalue their business or property; and they often fail to properly invest the proceeds in a diversified portfolio of equities, bonds and money markets for income. How can you turn your business or property sale into your ideal retirement? Here are three tips:

Determine the retirement lifestyle you desire, and how much money it will cost If you don’t know how much money you’ll need, you can’t identify how much you need to net from the sale. How many homes will you have? Do you see yourself traveling? Creating a charitable organization?” Create a detailed list. How much money will it cost you each year? If you retire at 55 or 65, odds are good you’ll enjoy a 30- to 40-year retirement. How much will you need for that length of time? When you meet with your wealth manager, insist on running that number through 1,000 different ‘launch’ scenarios – what we call a ‘space shuttle’ analysis – to test whether it will meet your expenses under a wide variety of market and world conditions.

You can’t rely on an Excel sheet analysis based on fixed rates of return and fixed expenses for the rest of your life. It’s a sure way to financial disaster because there’s no such thing as zero risk.

Get an objective valuation of your business or real estate People often attach an emotional value to the asset, particularly a business or legacy real estate. Hire a merger and acquisition professional to provide you with a real market valuation for your business, or a real estate appraiser to do the same for property. If the value isn’t where it needs to be, you may need to make some lifestyle changes or hold on to the asset longer. azhealthandliving.com | August 2015

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called friends, red lights called enemies, caution lights called family. You will have flats called jobs. But, if you have a spare called determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith and a driver named Jesus—you will make it to a place called success.” – Author Unknown
