"I did my research online for the practices in Arizona that offer varicose vein removal. I knew I wanted the EVLT treatment and wanted the procedure done by a Physician, not a cosmetic place. I narrowed it down to three Physicians and chose Dr. Sharma for his experience. I could not be more pleased with my experience at Arizona Vein & Laser Institute. Dr. Sharma is a wonderful physician. As he is performing the procedure, he explains what he is doing and is so concerned about making you feel comfortable. As for his staff, I cannot say enough good words. One thing I have learned in my lifetime is that your employees are only as good as you are. Dr. Sharma, you have a wonderful staff which says alot about you as an employer. I spent many office visits with them and every time they were pleasant, caring and professional. I was impressed by the way they worked as a team with Dr. Sharma. Thank you so much!" Joy A.

"I had called your office on a Monday morning to see if I could be fit in for an appointment as soon as possible because of a complication I had over the weekend. Being a new patient and never being seen at your office before it didn't matter because the woman who answered was not only kind, friendly and sypmathetic of my situation, but she was able to fit me in that very same afternoon. I have to say how incredibly impressed I was with the entire staff at this office but even more so with Dr. Sharma and Dr. Hecht. Their bedside manners are second to none. Thank you!" Scott Schrimp

It’s not in your head.

Bring more pleasure back into your life &

BECOME A MORE INTIMATE YOU!

T

he loss of sexual pleasure and enjoyment is not in your head. Pregnancy, childbirth, perimenopause, menopause, and the natural aging process all have an impact on the appearance, tightness, and lubrication of a woman’s vagina. These

changes can all diminish a woman’s pleasure and desire for sexual intimacy. Lack of sexual intimacy can have a detrimental effect on a woman’s well-being, overall happiness, and contentment in a relationship-by both partners! Don’t let discomfort hinder your pleasure at any age. Additional benefits of the procedure are visible plumpness and improved aesthetic appearance as well as treatment of urinary leakage or stress incontinence. What do you do? Now there’s a pain-free, risk-free, non-surgical solution that brings immediate relief with no side effects. It’s ThermiVa-a better alternative to invasive and risky vaginal surgery, which is painful and requires a long, sex-free recovery period-not exactly the first step you want to take in rebuilding intimacy and sexual satisfaction. What is ThermiVa? ThermiVa treatments are administered in a series of three appointments, spaced 4 weeks apart. Each one is only about 30 minutes and requires no downtime afterward, women are able to return to normal activities as soon as they walk out and many report having improved intimacy that night with both parties noticing a difference! ThermiVa delivers comfortable controlled heat, generated by radiofrequency through a small proble. This heat causes tissues to contract and restores tightness, while stimulating the production of collagen to increase moisture and lubrication. Both of which lead to an improved vaginal appearance and function leading to enhanced intimacy, confidence, and ultimately satisfaction. This regenerated pelvic floor strength is also what aids in issues of urinary stress incontinence.

After all, what other treatment has a 100% patient satisfaction rating?

Relief is right here in the West Valley Dr. Kukurin was named a Top Chiropractor by the Consumers Research Council of America. He is listed in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare. With over 20 years of experience using acupuncture, chiropracticand science based nutritional therapies, the results produced by our methods have been featured on local TV newscasts, published in scientific journals, indexed in the National Library of Medicine and have been presented Knee Pain at medical conferences at Johns Hopkins and the Peripheral Nerve Society.

Diabetic Neuropathy, Peripheral Neuropathy Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, Plantar Fasciitis If you are suffering from lower back, buttocks and or leg pain or your feet or legs are cramping, numb or burning especially at night, you almost certainly have a condition which involves the nerves of the legs. The largest nerve in the body, the sciatic nerve (pictured in red to the right), starts in the lower back, runs through the muscles of the buttocks and down to the tip of the toes. If this nerve gets irritated, you can experience really terrible pain anywhere along the course of the nerve. You may also experience burning, numbness and odd sensations in your muscles. Irritation of this nerve may produce severe cramping or crawling sensations in your muscles. Of course, your back and leg pain can be caused by a pinched nerve in your lower back. This can be from a vertebra that is out of place, it can be caused by a slipped disc or it can be caused by spinal stenosis or any combination of these problems. Each of these conditions, bad discs, spinal stenosis or displaced vertebrae have very different treatments. Knowing exactly why you have your back and leg troubles is absolutely essential for effective care.

Headaches, Vertigo, TMJ, Migraines, Sinus Headache Neck and Shoulder Pain, Pinched Nerves, Tennis Elbow and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Spinal Stenosis, Sciatica, Lower Back, Hip and Leg Pain

So how do you find results? The answer is called Integrative Neurology. Neurology is the study of the nerves. This allows us to diagnose tough nerve conditions like spinal stenosis, disc problems and neuropathy. What happens next truly separates our integrative neurology approach from anything else available to help correct lower back, hip, leg and foot problems. We have pioneered techniques to decompress nerves, but also use a number of natural substances that have been shown in recent scientific studies to help nerves re-grow and repair. There are no current drugs that can do this. But that’s not all. We combine special electrical stimulation techniques with acupuncture. A combination that has been shown to correct abnormal nerve function and promote nerve repair. There simply is no better or more comprehensive system for diagnosing and correcting the cause of spinal stenosis, neuropathy and other conditions that cause lower back, hip and leg pain and numbness. Extra Innings-East Valley A premier baseball/softball facility and much more An abandoned super market was turned into a playhouse for baseball and softball lovers. Bats and balls have replaced broccoli and cauliflower. With 11 training tunnels, four machine pitch batting cages and one fully stocked pro shop, size is one of the reasons Extra Innings-East Valley has become so popular. “I’ve never seen anything like this in my entire life,” says Extra Inning-East Valley instructor Tim Unroe. “I was a Milwaukee Brewer and we played in Milwaukee County Stadium. This is nicer than Milwaukee County Stadium’s training facility.” Unroe knows this first hand as one of Extra Innings-East Valley’s lead instructors. Five days a week his schedule is booked teaching aspiring ball players. On a typical weeknight Extra Innings-East Valley is jam packed with teams and individuals working to perfect their swings or pitching mechanics. The facility has actually been used for more than just baseball or softball training. A high school football team has taken it over, using more than 6000 square feet of turf field for practice. During the week, homeschool children race around the turf playing tag, flag football and wiffle ball for physical education class. With meeting rooms, parents can even reserve Extra Innings-East Valley for birthday parties. A sport that gained huge popularity on the beaches in Southern California has also made its way to Extra InningsEast Valley. Over-The-Line (OTL) was started in San Diego by the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club nearly 65 years ago and is played on Monday nights in the fall at the baseball and softball facility. Similar to the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the big OTL tournament on Mission Beach is known as much for its party atmosphere as is the sport itself. The bikinis and

beer aren’t part of the atmosphere at Extra Innings, but that doesn’t stop the Valley’s OTL enthusiasts. Players come from across the Valley to play on Monday nights at the training facility. OTL is a bat and ball game that can’t be easily described. “It’s three man softball with no running,” says long time Over-The-Line player Dale Jarrett. Jarrett’s explanation might be a little simplified. There are some other major differences between softball and OTL. It is played on a field just 55 feet wide but extends as far as you can hit the ball. Another big difference is in pitching. In OTL, a fellow teammate pitches the ball straight up in the air while sitting almost directly under the batter. Gloves are not used in OTL. This leads to a few bumps and bruises. “I’ve jammed fingers,” says Jarrett. “This past July, I jammed my index finder trying to bare hand a ball and it swelled up so bad it looked like my big toe.” A few minor scrapes haven’t deterred people from the Monday night OTL games. The popularity continues to grow and the players come back week after week. Jarrett warns all the big softball and baseball sluggers who think OTL looks easy. “It’s not what they think, there is an art to hitting,” Jarrett says. “It’s a lot of fun, but you’ve got to be really precise on your hitting and you’ve got to be exact on your fielding.”

Visit the Asian Small Clawed Otter at Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park! By Kristy Morcom

The Asian Small Clawed Otter is known for its adorable face and dexterous little paws. Because it has partially webbed hands and fingernails, it is the only otter species to catch its prey using its hands instead of its mouth. Asian otters communicate vocally with a repertoire of at least 12 calls! Otters are related to weasels, skunks and ferrets, and like them, they have a very distinctive smell. Fostering a Community

Arizona’s Children Association offers services for foster children and their families Nicole M. always knew she wanted to adopt a child from foster care. She can remember writing about it in a journal when she was 12 years old. What she didn’t know is when it would happen. Within the last year and a half, her family of five humans and two dogs became a family of two dogs and 11 humans with kids ranging from three months to 12 years old. This seems like an intimidating undertaking in such a short time, but Nicole says the process wasn’t as daunting as she thought it would be and the struggles have helped her grow from her own abusive childhood. “You can’t see the pain these children have gone through and not be changed by it,” she says. More than 18,000 children are in Arizona’s foster care system, with about 750 of them expected to “age out” of the system upon turning 18 years old this year. A majority of these children live in group homes and, on average, will move five times during their time in the system. Arizona’s Children Association (AzCA), the state’s oldest and largest statewide child welfare and behavioral health nonprofits, provides for more than 40,000 children, youth and families every year. In 2015, more than 1,200 children in Arizona’s foster care system were provided a home. About 800 of those homes had parents who were trained and supported directly by AzCA. The nonprofit offers services that include foster care and adoption; behavioral health and trauma/crisis response; family preservation and reunification; kinship support services; parenting education; and transitional and support services.

It is the only organization in the state certified to help young adults who have aged out of the system. Its Thrive Mentor Program in particular is designed to aid foster youth between the ages of 16 and 21 who have or will be transitioning out of state or tribal foster care. More than 1,400 youth and young adults transition into independence every year with the Thrive program. Megan R., a freshman at Arizona State University, has been studying social work since aging out of the system. In late September, she graduated from AzCA’s Living Skills Training Program and also received her cosmetology license. She largely credits the help of her mentor, Christie Price-Sefranka, for her success. “She took me to orientation, went to my graduations, and helped me move in. She has been a huge support and helped me achieved my goals. I think the mentor program is important because of the extra support system,” Megan says. “Many of us [foster youth] don’t keep in touch with our foster families after we age out, and it’s important to keep connections and have someone to talk to.”

“Often, when children come into foster care, they carry with them a sense of guilt or responsibility for what has happened,” Ensdorff says. “We love stories when these children and young adults are able to speak about their situation in a way that displays their true understanding that, even though some really bad things have happened to them, it does not define them. Watching them make this discovery is impactful and it is this discovery that empowers them to use their voice in order to create positive change and take control in their lives.”

Studies on mentorship of youth have found that, over a span of two years, mentees self-reported better health, educational attainment, less suicide risk and less risk of sexually transmitted infections than non-mentored foster care youth. AzCA staff help children and young adults understand that they have a voice, says president and CEO Denise Ensdorff.

Military Officer Proves That Giving Back is Always in Style West Valley resident Joseph Stenger isn't just giving back through military service, he and his team of officers are soaring to new heights in empowering others from around the globe through fashion. But it's not just any fashion that these men are selling. It's scarves—each one handcrafted by artisans around the globe and each one with a unique story. "Our mission is to create clothing that men and women love and feel good about wearing," says Stenger, founder of Flying Scarfs. "Through our nonprofit brand, we're able to empower hundreds of female artisans in underdeveloped countries by showcasing their handcrafted scarves to the world." Stenger and his fellow officers thought of the idea five years ago during their deployment to Afghanistan. They saw they could create a nonprofit enterprise that would not only provide employment for Afghan women but also share their culture and story around the world. So, they started Flying Scarfs in 2011 as way to help. And, it's worked. Today, the brand has grown to so much more, expanding to help empower artisans not just in Afghanistan but also all over the world through fashion. "We recently re-launched our brand in an effort to reshape the manner in which Americans think about social change with a campaign called ‘Every Scarf Tells a Story,’” he says. "With this new outlook, we are confident we'll be able to mobilize more supporters from around the globe to help harness more resources to really help us make an impact." Currently, Stenger and his team are focused on continuing to promote microeconomic development for women globally as well as the development of education programs for women and children in underprivileged communities. "Only 28 percent of Afghans can read and write," says Stenger. "So, we are constructing a school in the Afghan community, intended to help keep youth off the streets, where they are more likely to be indoctrinated by extremist views, and arm women and their families with the tools needed to improve quality of life and overcome extremism." 18 November 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

According to Stenger, the new space will be paid for through sales of the scarves and used for IT, English and reading classes for women and their families for many years to come. "There is more to the construction of these scarves—there's a story," he says. "When a customer purchases our scarves they can feel good about joining a highly committed team of United States veterans who are dedicated to changing the lives for women in Afghanistan and around the globe by helping them stand for the freedoms everyone deserves." NEW BREAKTHROUGH METHOD FOR CORRECTING GUM RECESSION! The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST), invented and patented by John Chao, DDS, MADG, is a scalpel-free, suture-free procedure for correcting gum recession. During the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique™, a needle is used to make a small hole in the patient’s existing gum tissue. Through this pinhole, special instruments are used to gently loosen the gum tissue. These tools help expand and slide the gumline to cover the exposed root structure. There are no grafts, no sutures, and no incisions needed with the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique™. It simply involves the adjustment of the existing tissue. As an international charter member of PST, Dr. Steven Chang is among the first dentists offering PST. Dr. Chang was trained by Dr. John Chao, DDS, JD, the inventor and patent-owner of Pinhole Surgical Technique. Dr. Chang is the President of Pinhole Surgical Technique Study Group for Certified Clinicians in Arizona, and regularly communicates with Dr. John Chao for clinical findings and advanced training. Why Dental Hygiene is Essential for Overall Health The importance of maintaining clean teeth and healthy gums goes beyond having fresh breath and a white smile. Many people are surprised to discover that oral hygiene plays an integral role in overall health. Research indicates that oral health mirrors the condition of the body as a whole. Also, regular dental visits can alert dentists about overall health and pinpoint if a person is at a risk for chronic disease. An oral health check-up also may be the first indication of a potential health issue not yet evident to a general medical doctor. Heart disease According to the Academy of General Dentistry, there is a distinct relationship between periodontal disease and conditions such as heart disease and stroke. Joint teams at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom and the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland found that people with bleeding gums from poor dental hygiene could have an increased risk of heart disease. Bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream when bleeding gums are present. That bacteria can stick to platelets and subsequently form blood clots. This interrupts the flow of blood to the heart and may trigger a heart attack. Brushing and flossing twice daily and rinsing with mouthwash can remove bacteria and keep gums healthy. Facial pain The Office of the Surgeon General says infections of the gums that support the teeth can lead to facial and oral pain. Gingivitis, which is an early stage of gum disease, as well as advanced gum disease, affects more than 75 percent of the American population. Dental decay can lead to its own share of pain. Maintaining a healthy mouth can fend off decay and infections, thereby preventing pain. Pancreatic cancer In 2007, the Harvard School of Public Health reported a link between gum disease and pancreatic cancer. In the ongoing study, 51,000 men were followed and data was collected beginning in 1986. The Harvard researchers found that men with a history of gum disease had a 64 percent increased risk of pancreatic cancer compared with men who had never had gum disease. The greatest risk for 30 November 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

for pancreatic cancer among this group was in men with recent tooth loss. However, the study was unable to find links between other types of oral health problems, such as tooth decay, and pancreatic cancer. Alzheimer's disease Various health ailments, including poor oral health, have been linked to a greater risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. In 2010, after reviewing 20 years' worth of data, researchers from New York University concluded that there is a link between gum inflammation and Alzheimer's disease. Follow-up studies from researchers at the University of Central Lancashire in the United Kingdom compared brain samples from 10 living patients with Alzheimer's to samples from 10 people who did not have the disease. Data indicated that a bacterium - Porphyromonas gingivalis was present in the Alzheimer's brain samples but not in the samples from the brains of people who did not have Alzheimer's. Porphyromonas gingivalis is usually associated with chronic gum disease. As a result of the study, experts think that the bacteria can move via nerves in the roots of teeth that connect directly with the brain or through bleeding gums. These health conditions are just a sampling of the relationship between oral health and overall health. Additional connections also have been made and continue to be studied.

Managing Diabetes During the Holidays

By MS

With the holiday season upon us, diabetics can heed the following tips from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help them stay on a healthy track. Stick to your normal routine. While the holiday season can be unpredictable, the CDC advises diabetics stick to their normal routines as closely as possible. Because holiday guests cannot control food served to them at family gatherings or parties, the CDC recommends diabetics offer to bring a healthy, diabetic-friendly dish along to any parties. In addition, don't skip meals during the day in anticipation of a large holiday meal. Doing so makes it hard to control blood sugar levels. Be extra careful with alcohol. Alcohol is served or readily available at many holiday gatherings, and many people overindulge because of the festive mood of the season. Overindulging in alcohol is dangerous for anyone, but diabetics must be especially mindful of their alcohol consumption. Alcohol can lower blood sugar and interact with diabetes medicines. Eat slowly. Eating slowly can benefit anyone during the holiday season. Eating at a leisurely pace gives diners' brains ample time to signal that their bodies are full. By eating quickly, diners may be eating more calories than they hoped to eat, and that can lead to uncomfortable feelings of fullness after a meal. Diabetics who can slow down their eating are less likely to overindulge in less healthy holiday foods that can affect their blood sugar levels. Remain active. The holiday season can be hectic, as adults often must juggle extraordinarily busy social schedules with the responsibilities of everyday life. Many people sacrifice time at the gym to ease the burden of hectic holiday schedules, but diabetics must resist that temptation. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases notes that routine physical activity helps diabetics keep their blood glucose levels in their target range. Physical activity also helps the hormone insulin absorb glucose into all of the body's cells for energy. That extra energy boost can help diabetics fend off holiday-related fatigue. azhealthandliving.com | November 2016

Understanding Seasonal Affective Disorder The tail end of daylight saving time in 2016 occurs November 6, when millions of people will turn their clocks back one hour. Few people enjoy turning the clocks back in autumn as much as they enjoy turning them forward in spring. Turning the clocks forward affords many people, in particular working professionals who spend much of their weekdays working indoors, a chance to enjoy some sunlight when leaving their offices each day. However, once the clocks are turned back, professionals typically find themselves leaving their offices under a cover of darkness. Some people easily adjust to less daylight, while others experience a condition known as season affective disorder, or SAD. SAD is a disorder related to changes in seasons. According to the Mayo Clinic, the majority of people with SAD begin to experience symptoms in the fall and continue battling those symptoms throughout the winter. The end of daylight saving time occurs in early November, and the onset of SAD symptoms is no doubt related to the decreased exposure to daylight many people experience once clocks have been turned back. Those who suspect they might be susceptible to SAD can get a better grasp of the condition so they are capable of recognizing and responding to it should any symptoms appear.

What is SAD? Mental Health America, a leading community-based nonprofit dedicated to addressing the needs of those living with mental illness, defines SAD as a mood disorder associated with depression and related to seasonal variations of light. Though many people may be saddened when the clocks are turned back and the sun sets earlier than it does in the warmer months, MHA notes that a diagnosis of SAD can only be made after the symptoms of SAD have appeared for three consecutive winters and have gone into remission once spring and summer have arrived.

What are the symptoms of SAD? Simply feeling bummed out that winter is on the horizon does not mean a person has SAD. The following are some of the more common symptoms of the disorder: · Depression marked by feelings of misery, guilt, hopelessness, despair and apathy. A loss of self-esteem may also occur. · Feelings of anxiety that include tension and an inability to tolerate stress 32 November 2016| azhealthandliving.com

· Mood changes that are sometimes extreme; some SAD sufferers experience feelings of mania in spring and summer. · Changes in sleeping habits, such as a desire to oversleep and difficulty staying awake. Some people may experience disturbed sleep and find themselves waking up in early morning when they are unaccustomed to doing so. · Feelings of fatigue and an inability to adhere to one's normal routine

Who is most likely to suffer from SAD? The Mayo Clinic notes that SAD is diagnosed more often in women than in men, and MHA notes that three out of four SAD sufferers are women. Young people are more likely than older people to get winter SAD, with MHA reporting that the main age of onset of SAD is between 18 and 30. Symptoms of SAD may worsen among people who have already been diagnosed with clinical depression or bipolar disorder. More information about seasonal affective disorder is available at www.mentalhealthamerica.net.

Five Ways to Support the Bereaved during the Holidays By Lynda Cheldelin Fell (www.LyndaFell.com), an emotional healing expert, and creator of the Grief Diaries series of books

Grief at holiday time can be the most difficult grief of all. Someone mourning the loss of a loved one may struggle to join in the merriment, be overcome by memories of holidays past or try to block out or avoid the celebrations altogether. It’s natural that friends and family want to step in to provide love and support, but just how you do that is important. Don’t think that you need to fill the person’s every moment with holiday festivities. Grieving can be both physically and emotionally exhausting. They simply may not have the energy to handle all that celebrating. During the holiday season, you can best provide support to the bereaved if you:

Don’t force your agenda on them Allow the bereaved to set the tone for how they wish to cope with the holidays. Honor their choices. Whether they wish to maintain their normal holiday routine, leave town or ignore the holidays entirely, resist the urge to pressure them to handle the holidays your way.

Don’t avoid them Your absence will be noticed more than you think. If the griever asks to be left alone, honor their wishes if it’s safe to do so. Otherwise, include them in the festivities and treat them as you would any other significantly injured guest: with kindness, compassion and gentleness.

Invite them to help you serve meals at local shelters Serving those who are less fortunate is a wonderful reminder that we aren’t alone in our struggles.

Remember to take care of yourself

Don’t pretend nothing has happened in their life

If you live or work with the bereaved, their sorrow can quickly deplete your own happiness. Give yourself permission to take time to enjoy the festivities. If you live with the griever, then carve out ways that allow you to celebrate in private. Even small ways can help, such as indulging in a favorite holiday treat or enjoying a night out with friends.

That only creates the elephant in the room, and invalidates their sorrow. But don’t awkwardly coddle them either. Again, simply treat them with kindness, compassion, and gentleness while reminding yourself that you can’t fix their pain.

If you think you can’t make much of a difference, remember the power of one moment can change someone’s world. One smile can change a person’s mood. One hug can change their day. That’s everything to someone in mourning. azhealthandliving.com | November 2016

minimally invasive treatment option to eliminate varicose veins and the symptoms they cause. The EVLT procedure uses laser light to quickly and safely achieve the outcome you want for improved confidence in your appearance and greater everyday comfort.

Prior to your EVLT procedure, the area to be treated will be disinfected and local anesthetic applied to ensure comfort during treatment. A small, hollow needle will be placed into the vein requiring treatment and a laser probe threaded into the vein through the needle. Your vein doctor will guide the probe via ultrasound to the area where treatment will be most effective. The laser is fired, delivering directed energy to the walls of the problematic vein. This energy will cause the vein to shrink and prevent further blood flow through this area. As a result, blood will be diverted into other veins. Once treatment has been completed, the probe and the needle are removed and a dressing applied to the wound. Compression bandages will be applied to the area to help circulation while you heal. Q. I need hemorrhoid surgery, but my friends and family have frightened me from proceeding with surgery. Is there anything besides traditional excisional surgery? A. Hemorrhoids are the result of excessive

blood flow and larger diameter vessels that feed the normal arterial anal hemorrhoidal cushions. This can result in symptoms such as bleeding, pain, discomfort, swelling and prolapse (protruding of hemorrhoid tissue). Hemorrhoids will occur in 50 percent of the population by the age of 50. Eighty-five percent of the population will experience hemorrhoid symptoms in their lifetime. Most definitive procedures being done involve some form of excisional therapy. Today a non-excisional definitive surgical treatment is available called Trans Hemorrhoidal Dearterialization (THD). THD uses ultrasound to locate the hemorrhoidal arteries so that they may be ligated. The surgeon will then repair any prolapsed tissue if present, again using only suture. No tissue is cut or excised. THD is performed as an outpatient surgery and most patients will return to normal activities within four days. THD eliminates the most dreaded complications of hemorrhoid surgery such as anal stenosis and anal sphincter damage, which can lead to incontinence (loss of bowel control). Since THD is excision-less, and uses only sutures for repair, a patient’s pain is much less, recuperation is faster and healing is much quicker.

Q. I have diabetes. Why do I need to have regular eye exams?

Q. My elderly mother and father don’t sleep well. Could I also be at risk?

A. In the United States, we are in the middle

A. The research on this topic is rather scarce,

of a diabetic epidemic that is showing no signs of slowing down. People with diabetes are at higher risk for certain eye diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy, cataracts and others. Diabetes is a disease of the capillaries. The only way an optometrist can see the blood vessels in your eyes without cutting them open is by dilating and looking in the back of your eyes. If you are a diabetic, getting this yearly eye exam is of the most importance, because early diagnosis of retinal disease can prevent significant vision loss. In fact, the eyes are one of the first places where diabetes manifests. Dot blot hemorrhages, neovascularization, fibrosis, tractional retinal detachment, and many other vascular changes can show up without any symptoms. Only through a thorough retinal examination can a proper diagnosis can be made.

Immediate relatives of patients with narcolepsy, hypersomnia, and insomnia have been found to have a higher frequency of these disorders as well. In other related research, no differences in lifestyle or sleeping conditions could be found in elderly patients who complained of sleep problems. This led the researchers of the Sweden study to suggest that heredity factors may be the answer.

The information contained in this article is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, care, or treatment. Always consult your physician or other qualified health care provider with any questions regarding any possible medical condition.

While we always have to take into account that surveys such as this one are not without fault (one has to allow for human error), the results of this research are intriguing.

although an interesting study was done in Sweden in the mid-1990s. The results, published in the Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics, were significant. Restless sleep, frequent awakening, difficulty getting to sleep again after waking up in the night, as well as tiredness at night, but with inability to get to sleep was found to be more common in both sexes if either parent had difficulty sleeping. Further, these problems were more common in respondents whose parents both had difficulty sleeping.

If your mother, father, or both parents suffer from a sleep problem, whether it be sleepdisordered breathing, insomnia, restless leg syndrome or any of the other number of disorders, it might be a good idea to assess the quality of your own sleep. You might be more like your parents than you think.

Q. What are the benefits of the Pinhole Surgical Technique ™(PST™)? A. The Pinhole Surgical Technique™ is a

minimally invasive option for treating gum recession. Unlike traditional grafting techniques, PST™ is incision and suture free. All of the tools and techniques used to perform the Pinhole Surgical Technique™ were created by Dr. John Chao. Traditional gum recession treatments involve the use of donor tissue or soft tissue grafts in order to rebuild the gumline. This soft tissue would be sutured in place and would join with existing gum tissue as it healed. While this traditional grafting treatment is effective, comparable results with better patient experience can be achieved through the Pinhole Surgical Technique™. During the Pinhole Surgical Technique™, a needle is used to make a small hole in the patient’s existing gum tissue. Through this pinhole, special instruments are used to gently loosen the gum tissue. These tools help expand and slide the gumline to cover the exposed root structure. There are no grafts, no sutures, and no incisions needed with the Pinhole Surgical Technique™. It simply involves the adjustment of the existing tissue. If you are concerned about receding gums and want to explore alternatives to a gum grafting procedure, set up a consultation with your dentist. Discuss the benefits of The Pinhole Surgical Technique PST™ in more detail and determine whether you are a good candidate for the procedure.

Q. Is there an effective treatment for sun damage that requires little to no downtime?

Q. Why do we age?

A. Now that summer is over and sun tans are fading, sun damage becomes more noticeable. Sun damage can make the skin appear dull and brown spots can appear on your face and upper chest.

Cells are the basic biological foundation within our bodies, and are at the center of any discussion related to the aging process. Your body has trillions of cells organized into different tissues that make up organs: such as your brain, heart, and skin. When cellular health is not properly maintained, all of these areas are increasingly affected as we age.

With the holiday season upon us, no one has time for invasive procedures that require downtime. Luckily, Dermacare Cosmetic Surgery offers a Fotofacial treatment or IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) that makes a tremendous difference in your skin with no impact on your schedule. By targeting brown pigmentation from sun damage, Fotofacials can improve your skin’s texture, tone and smoothness. With each treatment, excess pigment is shrunk and rises to the outer layers of skin. At first, you will notice the pigment looks smaller and darker but, within 7-10 days, it will slough off to reveal clearer skin. Prepping the skin with exfoliation, like Microdermabrasion or dermaplane, before the Fotofacial is done (all in the same appointment), can allow for a more effective treatment and smoother skin that has a healthy glow.

A. Aging starts at the cellular level.

Cell damage and death is the basis for understanding the aging process, though it is not the only factor. As we age, cell strength and vitality are naturally lost over time and they begin to degenerate and disappear at an accelerating rate. This has a tremendous impact on body fitness, physical appearance, and our overall notion of well-being. There are also physical factors: such as free radicals, inflammation, excess sugar, and stress that damage our cells and therefore, many experts believe, accelerate aging.

Treatments are done in a series of three or more sessions. One Fotofacial appointment takes about 45 minutes and no medication is required. Being assessed by a qualified, licensed professional is important to ensure a safe and effective treatment.

Scientific research has shown that Mineral BioSciences®, Ioniplex™, has a stimulatory effect on cell metabolism, which improves energy production and cell performance overtime. Ioniplex has also been shown to restore the age-related decrease of the most important structural and functional components of cells. Ioniplex makes life better and allows you to enjoy your health, youth, and vigor. Ioniplex is available in the liquid dietary supplement Totala Cellular Health.

Q. What are my options if I have pain Q. Why is oral health of extra importance and limitation from lumbar spinal for pregnant women? stenosis? A. Did you know that if you are pregnant A. Lumbar spinal stenosis is when the spinal the bacteria in your mouth can be passed to canal narrows and “squeezes” on the nerves in the canal as it travels out of the spinal canal. Degenerative changes including degenerative disc disease, facet arthritis and congenital factors all contribute to this debilitating problem. Pain in the low back, buttocks and down the legs is typically made better with leaning forward such as on a shopping cart or sitting but classically worsens with walking. Notoriously this has been a difficult problem to treat. Traditionally we offer spinal epidurals to alleviate inflammation and allow for more space temporarily. These work in many people and definitely beat the more invasive option of a laminectomy and/or fusion. The long term studies show that you generally are better off waiting to get the more invasive options. Now we have something really exciting that will likely change this. The Superion Indirect Decompression System is a minimally invasive option that holds the area where the spinal stenosis is open similar to how it feels when you are sitting. And it does not require any cutting inside the spinal canal or around the spinal canal. This little device is implanted through a small tube the size of a dime to reduce tissue damage and blood loss. It’s a simple outpatient procedure with a rapid recovery time and no destabilization of the spine.

A. As we age there are many significant changes in facial skin and volume seen both anatomically and aesthetically. Q. Why should I advertise my business? A. No matter how wonderful your service

or product is, if you don't advertise, nobody will know. The goal of advertising should be to cost effectively reach the largest audience possible to attract new patients/ customers. If done correctly, advertising can be a wonderful investment; if done poorly, advertising can become financially draining.

Here are four tips to start a successful advertising plan:

1. Go after your target audience; in the right places! No product or service will appeal to everyone. Do research to understand who your audience is and determine what they read, watch and listen to. Find your market and be everything you can be to that audience. 2. Highlight your competitive advantage; what makes you unique? Find your competitive edge. Too many ads highlight all the features and services and fail to sell their specific benefits. Unless you highlight these benefits, how can you deliver value to potential patients/customers? 3. Establish your image. You have a car full of hungry kids and there are only two places to stop for lunch; you recognize the McDonald’s arches but you have never heard of the other place. Where will you stop? Image counts; don’t lose a chance to make an impression. 4. You have to spend money to make money. Advertising is not the place to cut corners. Doing so affects the bottom line. Successful advertising may cost some money, but that is because it works.

Q. How can I strengthen my immune system as cold and flu season starts? A. We are coming to the time of the year when colds and flu often attack our bodies. Research has determined this is usually a result of immune system breakdown. We get sick when the body lacks the proper nutrients to sustain a strong healthy system. Specific factors affecting the immune system are nutritional deficiencies, infections, trauma, toxins, and constant stress and sleep deprivation. According to Diwakar Balachandran, M.D., director of the Sleep Center at the University of Texas, lack of sleep may actually make us more prone to catching colds and the flu. Experimental studies have shown sleep deprivation suppresses the immune system, resulting in illness and disease. It was Hippocrates who said “Let food be your medicine.” A healthy diet should be part of any wellness program. Any nutrient deficiency suppresses immune function as does an excess consumption of sugar and refined foods. Research shows that the type of bacteria residing in our GI tract affects our health and digestive system, which is important for overall health and well-being. Although diet is the foundation for good health, supplements can be of benefit as well. Wheatgrass is an effective supplement for reducing stress, inflammation, detoxification of the body, aiding in sleep, and strengthening your immune system. Best Organic Wheatgrass is the only wheatgrass powder that includes the leaves and roots. It is packaged in convenient single serving packets for mobility, to take to the gym, work, business trips or other travels.

Q. I can see that my mother really needs help when I visit her home, but she is a very proud and independent woman who refuses to consider having homecare or moving to a healthcare facility. How can I make her understand the benefits of having an in-home caregiver? A. As people are living much longer lives, many of them suffer from chronic health conditions that cause limitations in day-today activities. Many people have a hard time accepting the changes in their health and the limitations in lifestyle they can create. It is important for your mother to understand the risks associated with refusing help. Try talking with her about all of the possible negative consequences of continuing to try to do everything on her own, or simply neglecting those things she cannot manage. One bad fall can lead to a hospitalization and a stay in a care center that may become permanent or worse if help does not come soon enough. Neglecting proper nutrition and personal hygiene can also have terrible consequences that lead to further declines in health and functioning, as can improper management of prescribed or non-prescribed medications. Even the lack of socialization can be detrimental for people who stay inhome because they cannot manage going out on their own any longer. Sometimes, if people fully understand the risks, they are more willing to make changes.

Q. What species do you currently Q. I know about Medicare’s Open have on display in your Baby Animal Enrollment Period but why should I Nursery? review my plan every year? A. With more than 600 species on display, A. The simple answer is because “things” change. there are always new arrivals at Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park. We are excited to welcome three lion cubs, a white tiger cub and a leopard cub to the park! All three species can now be seen on display at Wildlife World's popular Baby Animal Nursery. All five cubs will receive around-the-clock care by the Wildlife World hand raising team, including bottles of formula several times a day. Over the next few months, they will begin the transition to include meat in their diet.

Here are just a few examples of what those changes might be: •Lifestyle •Health •Physicians •Benefits •Cost of care

Even subtle changes to any of the above can greatly affect the performance of your health plan. Residing in Arizona provides many health plan options to those enrolled in Medicare. The majority of Medicare beneficiaries have chosen medical coverage in addition to As one of the most recognizable animal “traditional” Medicare.

symbols in the world, African lions once were accurately dubbed the King of the Jungle. They are now listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Historically, tigers once ranged over most of Asia and may have numbered more than 100,000. Today, according to the IUCN, tigers are critically endangered, having lost more than 93 percent of their home range. Leopards are nimble and powerful big cats closely related to lions, tigers and jaguars. Unfortunately, many of their populations are endangered. Habitat loss and degradation along with increased poaching remain the biggest threats to all these felines’ survival.

One of those options is a Medicare Advantage plan and, although they all offer very comprehensive protection, they can also vary greatly from plan to plan and year to year. If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan you receive an “Annual Notice of Change” each October explaining any and/or all changes made to your benefits for the coming year. The Open Enrollment Period allows those with Medicare the opportunity to explore and learn about all options available to them for the coming year. Unlike other times throughout the year, this 7-week period of October 15 to December 7 allows changes without restrictions. It’s important to learn and understand the differences and options available before a well informed decision should be made. How to Teach Kids to be Philanthropic Introducing children to charity early in their lives can lay a foundation of philanthropy that lasts a lifetime. The more kids witness charitable giving, the more likely they are to embrace charity as they grow up. Teaching children that it is better to give than to receive can be challenging, but it's never too early to instill philanthropic feelings in a child. In order to help young children understand what it means to be charitable, try these ideas.

Open a dialogue A study from the United Nations Foundation and the Women's Philanthropy Institute at Indiana UniversityPurdue University Indianapolis found simply talking to children about giving increased the likelihood that children would give by 20 percent. Being specific makes a difference in getting the message out there. For example, rather than mentioning we have to give because it makes the world a better place, explain how donating food will help feed the less fortunate who cannot afford to feed themselves.

Lead by example Call the children over when you are doing something that pertains to philanthropy. Show them checks being written to help various nonprofits, or include them in outings that involve volunteer work.

Look for easy ways to give

Help out neighbors Being charitable doesn't have to mean spending tons of money or even putting together material things. It can involve donating time to others who may need assistance. Service-oriented projects, such as raking leaves, baking cookies or taking in elderly neighbors' garbage pails, are all types of charity. Children can become friendly and play with other children who may have a parent serving in the military or support someone who has special needs.

Get involved with pets

Charity doesn't require a large amount of money or substantial effort, and starting with something simple can make for a great introduction to charity. Begin with small projects kids can embrace and understand. Spend time going through clothes that no longer fit and make a trip to a charitable clothing drive or collection bin.

Animals and children seem a perfect match, and one charitable effort kids may embrace is helping animals. Bring food or pet supplies to a shelter or the local humane society. Allow children to interact with the animals they are helping.

Bring your child to a clothing store or toy store and pick out an item that can be donated to a less fortunate child. This way he or she can participate firsthand.

There are many ways to acclimate children to charitable living, and doing so may lay the foundation for a rewarding life.

How to Help Kids in Your Community

Helping kids is not just for parents, as young adults and older adults with no children of their own or those whose children are fully-grown can give back to kids in their communities in various ways.

Coaching: Youth sports leagues rely on volunteers to run smoothly. Inquire with your local government office about how to become a youth sports coach in your community. In many instances, no coaching experience is necessary to coach youth sports. However, prospective coaches will likely have to undergo training before they can patrol the sidelines. Such training may include everything from coaching pointers to emergency medical training and more. Teaching: Adults with knowledge to pass along to the next generation may want to explore volunteer teaching opportunities. Successful professionals can share their professional expertise with high school or college students through communitysponsored programs. Amateur or professional musicians can offer lessons to youngsters interested in learning an instrument, while writers can teach kids about writing. Volunteer teaching opportunities may be easiest to find by speaking to local boys and girls clubs or schools that offer weekend or after school programs. Fitness: Kids who are not involved in organized athletics may still enjoy exercise, which provides even more opportunities for adults to give back to the youth in their communities. For example, cycling enthusiasts can work with local youth organizations to sponsor cycling groups for kids. If hiking or kayaking is your passion, look into organizing trips to nearby state parks where kids can hike and/or kayak and learn to love the great outdoors. Mentoring: Many young people benefit from the guidance of mentors. Mentoring can be done through an organization such as Big Brothers Big Sisters (www.bbbs.org) or through local school systems that connect professionals from certain fields with students interested in pursuing careers in those fields. Mentoring.org is a great resource for adults interested in mentoring who may not know how to get involved with helping kids in their communities. azhealthandliving.com |November 2016

Seven Tips to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain The holiday season is a busy time of year dominated by social engagements. Many people find the hectic pace of the holiday season makes it challenging to eat healthy, especially since so many holiday parties include desserts and high-calorie foods. Various studies suggest holiday weight gain is common, though holiday revelers may not be gaining as much weight as they think they are. The New England Journal of Medicine found that while people's perceived holiday weight gain hovers between zero and 6.7 pounds, in reality most people gain just under 1 pound during the holiday season. Though that may not seem like a lot, according to researchers at the National Institutes of Health, many people never lose the weight they gain during the winter holidays. The pounds add up year after year, making holiday weight gain a significant contributor to adult obesity. The holiday season does not need to derail a healthy lifestyle. Consider these tips to avoid extra pounds come the holiday season.

Eat before you go shopping. Leaving the house hungry may tempt you to make impulse food purchases that can compromise healthy diets. It's easy to grab a quick convenience item at the food court or from a vending machine. However, eating a snack before you leave will alleviate hunger and you can control the foods that go into your body.

Make smarter food choices. When visiting a holiday party buffet line or grabbing an on-the-go snack, think about the foods you choose. Look for low-calorie items that will still fill you up. Proteins, complex carbohydrates and vegetables are good choices. Avoid creamy dips and dressings, and if you want to try something fried or cheese-laden, do so only sparingly.

Be selective with sweets. Sweets are readily available during the holiday season. Rather than filling up your plate with a little "bite" of each dessert you want to try, select your favorite and then enjoy a reasonable portion.

Limit sampling while cooking. If you are entertaining others, cut down on tasting while you prepare the meal. Those calories can add up without you knowing it, and soon you've eaten an entire portion even before the festivities begin. 46 November 2016

Pack healthy snacks. It's always a good idea to have healthy snacks at the ready to tame random hunger pangs. Bring a favorite treat with you while shopping or if you will be visiting others. This helps you control your portion size and can keep you from overeating.

Mind your drinks, too. Many beverages, including alcoholic beverages and sweetened soft drinks, are high in calories. A single serving of wine can have anywhere from 100 to 300 calories. It's easy to lose count of caloric intake when indulging, but opt for low-calorie drinks or water whenever possible.

Increase your level of physical activity. Find ways to remain physically active during the holiday season. Park further away from mall entrances so you can walk a greater distance and burn more calories. Take a few extra laps around the mall. Opt for the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator. If you're at a party with upbeat music, get on the dance floor and work off some calories. Holiday weight gain may seem like an inevitability. However, with some forward thinking and smart choices, holiday celebrants can prevent weight gain this holiday season.

Probiotics Can Be Part of a Nutritious Diet

By MS

Probiotics can help people combat gastrointestinal distress. Some probiotics can help prevent diarrhea that occurs as a side effect from antibiotics, and they may also be beneficial to those who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome and conditions that affect the gastrointestinal tract. Probiotics are living microorganisms found in certain foods, most notably yogurt and kefir. They also may be found in products that are not taken orally, such as skin creams. Probiotics may be concentrated in dietary supplements as well. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, probiotics are healthy bacteria that help bodies to function properly by aiding in the digestion of food. Probiotics also destroy disease-causing microorganisms. Researchers have studied probiotics to determine their potential role in people's personal health. Preliminary data suggests that probiotics can be useful in helping with stomach upset from infections and taking antibiotics. Probiotics are also being examined to determine if they can be used to combat allergic disorders, such as hay fever or eczema. Probiotics also may be useful in the fight against oral health problems that stem from bacteria, like periodontal disease. Researchers also are looking into whether probiotics can be useful in treating the common cold or reducing the severity of the flu. The Mayo Clinic says side effects to probiotics are rare, and many healthy adults can safely add probiotic-heavy foods or probiotic supplements to their diets. But before including probiotics in your diet, speak with your doctor to make sure there will be no drug interactions or other adverse side effects. More research is needed into the health benefits of probiotics, but there's encouraging evidence that these live microorganisms can do much to improve personal health. azhealthandliving.com | November 2016

DECORATE & IMPROVE

By Melinda Myers, author of 20 gardening books, including Small Space Gardening and host of The Great Courses “How to Grow Anything: Food Gardening For Everyone” DVD set

Four Easy Care Gardening Trends for the Holiday Season Dress up the holidays or give gifts that continue giving throughout the year with these low maintenance gardening trends. Just add a little fun, classic beauty or style to make it even more memorable now and throughout the year.

Terrariums. These mini greenhouses continue to grow in popularity and are perfect for new or timid gardeners. Just plant a few small tropical plants, moisten the soil, close the lid and you have a self-contained growing chamber. Show off your green thumb with a modern, classic or vintage style vessel. Use the Gazebo Tabletop terrarium, classic bell jar or other mini garden as a centerpiece for the dining table or buffet. Or create a miniature garden in glass to give as a hostess gift. When the party is over, it’s a great memento of a fun holiday gathering.

Succulents. Growing succulents is another low maintenance garden trend that is perfect for busy gardeners during the hectic holiday season. Just place them in a sunny window and water whenever the soil is dry. It’s truly as easy as that. The small-scale cacti and succulents provide a multitude of opportunities for incorporating them into your holiday celebrations. You won’t need much space to enjoy the subtle colors and dramatic form of these drought tolerant plants. Just select containers that complement, but don’t overpower their charm. Consider buying a few extras for guests to take home and enjoy for years to come. But first, use them to dress up the table by making them into place cards for your guests. Simply add a name to the decorative pot. Or display them all together in a copper plant tray (gardeners.com), terra cotta saucer, or other shallow container to use as a centerpiece throughout the evening. When the party is over, each guest can pick their own plant to take home.

Air Plants. Unique and amazing air plants are all the rage and could certainly be described as the definitive easy care plant. Many are native to rain forests where they grow in the canopy of trees, gathering water and nutrients that pass by. No soil is needed for these versatile plants. Just hang them in a bright location and soak in tepid non-softened water once every week or two. 48 November 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

Display them in an open terrarium, shell or another decorative container. They make great centerpieces or stunning displays. Pothos, Philodendron and Ivy. These plants have long been low maintenance favorites of the indoor garden. This year, consider dressing them up for the holidays with sparkling garland, artificial flowers, berries and greens. Or display them in unique containers, baskets or hangers. Go retro and macramé a colorful hanger for your favorite hanging basket. Or place the pot in an earthy woven basket, sleek plastic pot, or classic Round Copper Wire Globe hanging basket. Add some fairy lights for a bit more sparkle on long winter nights. Make this holiday season warm and memorable with the help of these low maintenance garden trends and plants. You, your family, and friends will enjoy their beauty, charm, and easy care nature throughout the New Year ahead.

EXCEL & ACHIEVE

CAREER, BUSINESS & FINANCE By G. Michael Maddock, CEO of Maddock Douglas and, coauthor of Free the Idea Monkey, www.freetheideamonkey.com

How to Spot a Business Opportunity Five Tips for Getting Organized to Innovate

Take a moment to consider some of today’s largest, most recognizable companies—some of them may not be around after the next several years. Napster was a rule-breaking company that paved the way for iTunes and the complete disruption of the music industry. When someone who has no business being in your business comes along and puts you out of business, we call that a ‘Napster Moment.’ And Napster Moments are happening more and more often. In a recent radio interview, hit maker and former Sony CEO Tommy Mottola (think: Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Beyoncé) said that seasoned record execs saw Napster as a “mosquito unworthy of swatting,” and in hindsight realized that if they had just purchased the company, they would have “beaten iTunes to the punch.” The lesson? To succeed, company leaders must not only be able to innovate, they must recognize opportunity and ensure they’re poised to seize it. Tips for getting there:

Outside the jar

Balancing act

There’s a great saying in the South: “You can’t read the label when you’re sitting inside the jar.” If you’ve been at the same company for longer than six months, you’re likely in the jar. You’ll find your response to new ideas is typically, “We’ve tried that and it didn’t work,” or “Yes, but…,” or silence, or even a dumbfounded “huh?” Fortunately, there are several ways to get your head outside the jar: Accept ideas from junior personnel, seek perspectives from different departments, and switch up leadership roles, i.e., have a senior marketer switch from retail to manufacturing for a period of time and, most important, infuse perspective from outside your industry. Diversity is the key to a fresh perspective. Is your expertise killing you?

Wherever you find an innovative culture, you will see two primary personalities in leadership: the “Idea Monkeys,” who have no shortage of great ideas but do not have the follow-through to see a project to completion, and the (Ring) leaders, who specialize in execution and managing details. Every great enterprise needs a Yin for a Yang— Walt Disney had Roy Disney; Steve Jobs had Steve Wozniak; Wilbur Wright had Orville Wright. Ideally, an innovator needs a (Ring) leader at his or her side, and vice versa. Too much of one of these personalities spells disaster for any organization. Is your leadership humble enough to understand this? 50 November 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

Laughter (more than stress relief) As a response to humor, laughter is uniquely human; as far as we know, no other living thing can laugh. In business, laughter is the antithesis of fear. It is impossible to innovate effectively if you are afraid—nothing kills great ideas like fear. Fun-loving environments where workers are free to laugh are healthy places for creativity. One more thing…if lots of people laugh at an idea, there is usually a meaningful insight there worthy of much deeper exploration. When was the last time you heard your CEO belly laugh?

Failing forward History is filled with people who risked and lost much, yet went on to change the world. From religious leaders to Christopher Columbus to Winston Churchill to today’s budding entrepreneurs, learning how to efficiently experiment and learn is key to innovation success. Does your company embrace risk taking or is it too afraid to fail?

Be ruthless Ultimately, the buck stops with leadership, and managers get the team they deserve. Most well-adjusted people do not like firing employees; however, people stuck in the “victim” mindset are incapable of innovation. Why? Because they are always looking for fault or blame instead of possibility. Do you have a team of creators or do you have a team of victims?

ENJOY LIFE

By Michelle Talsma Everson

Marion Cotillard

The award-winning actress continues to impress audiences across the globe Dubbed the “The Most Bankable French Actress of the 21st Century,” Marion Cotillard has been entertaining fans in her native France and around the world for decades. Most recently, she starred in period spy thriller “Allied,” which opens in theaters this month. “Allied” follows Max Vatan [Brad Pitt] and Marianne Beausejour [Cotillard], two assassins who fall in love during a mission in Casablanca in 1942 to kill a German ambassador. A future together, however, is thrown into tumult when twisty secrets from their pasts cast doubts on their love for each other,” according to movies website ComingSoon.net. This film though is hardly Cotillard’s first appearance on the big screen. In fact, the 41-year-old actress made her acting debut in France at the age of 18. Since then, she has garnered success in both the French and American entertainment industries. On the American front, recent projects include “Contagion,” “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Macbeth.” “All of the characters I’ve had the chance to create are survivors,” she told The Telegraph in 2014. “But we live in a world where surviving makes up most of what we do.” Her hard work both in her native France and here in the States has paid off. She has received an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, two Cesar Awards, a European Film Award, a BAFTA Award, New York Film Critics Circle Award, and a National Society of Film Critics Award among many other top honors and nominations. 52 November 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

In fact, according to multiple media outlets, she was made a Chevalier (Knight) of the Order of the Arts and Letters in 2010 and, this year, was named being a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French government. This recognition is the country’s highest honor. When it comes to her roles, Cotillard has been known to go inside of her characters and reflect them on screen in a way few actresses can, according to many critics. “Marion Cotillard is the great silent film actress of our time. True, she has yet to make a silent film and may never actually do so, but let’s not get hung up on technicalities. Her power on screen has less to do with what she says than how she looks – not in terms of her appearance, but in the way those teacup-sized eyes seem to drink up the world around her, collecting an entire film’s worth of feeling into a single gaze or glance,” cites The Telegraph article. In addition to her bustling career, Cotillard is wellknown for her philanthropy and social justice activism. She is a spokesperson for Greenpeace, UNICEF France, and many others. When asked by Interview Magazine in 2010 where she first became passionate about the environment, Cotillard told the publication: “I think it comes from my family —especially my grandmother. I remember when I was a little girl at her house in Brittany. When she cooked, she wouldn’t waste anything. And my parents always raised me to believe that the most important thing was respect. Respect the place you live, be aware of the impact that you have on things. I was lucky to have this education growing up.” On top of her career and activism, Cotillard is also a proud mom and just announced that she is expecting a second child with long-time partner Guillaume Canet. To keep up with all of Cotillard’s social media adventures, fans can follow the actress on Instagram @marioncotillard. azhealthandliving.com |November 2016

STAY HEALTHY

aging well By MS

How to Help Socially Isolated Seniors The elderly population is on the rise in many countries. Advancements in health care and a growing emphasis on healthy lifestyles mean people are living longer than ever before. Age is often accompanied by wisdom, but men and women may also find that feelings of isolation, loneliness, and depression may also settle in, as they grow older. The Journal of Primary Prevention published "A Review of Social Isolation," which observed how social isolation has been linked to numerous detrimental health effects in older adults. Some of these ailments may include increased risk for mortality, rehospitalization, falls and dementia. Individuals looking to give back to their communities may want to consider helping seniors in their area. Although it can be difficult to see seniors with diminished physical or mental capabilities, the rewards of interacting and helping seniors can be immeasurable. There are plenty of ways to help seniors avoid isolation and continue to live fulfilling lives.

Provide transportation A Place for Mom, a senior housing placement resource, notes that lack of adequate transportation is a main cause of social isolation among seniors. Voluntary or necessary cessation of driving makes getting to and from appointments or even recreational outings more difficult. Where public transportation is unavailable or challenging to come by, volunteers can help shuttle seniors to and from grocery stores, doctor's offices and any other places they need to go. Getting out regularly and seeing new faces can help seniors overcome feelings of loneliness.

Participate in hobbies together Give seniors a sense of purpose by encouraging them to participate in hobbies or activities. Book clubs are one activity that can interest people of different age groups.

Encourage exercise Physical exercise keeps the body fit and improves mental 60 November 2016

Individuals looking to give back to their communities may want to consider helping seniors in their area. health. Seniors can benefit from physical activity because it promotes strong bones and a healthy cardiovascular system. In addition, seniors who enroll in exercise classes at gyms or local senior centers can meet like-minded adults, helping them overcome their feelings of isolation even further.

Provide meals and companionship Older adults may not be getting all they need to maintain healthy weights and bodily functions. Cooking and shopping for healthy foods may be difficult. Provide seniors with healthy meals when possible, and take the time to share those meals. This can foster conversations that keep seniors' minds sharp and may help prevent social isolation. Seniors can benefit from many different forms of support, and helping older adults is a worthy volunteer initiative.

STAY HEALTHY

aging well By Kristie Chadwick, Certified Dementia Practitioner, CDP® and Care Manager of Paradise Living Centers

How to Know if it’s Alzheimer’s Disease In 1983, President Ronald Reagan designated November National Alzheimer’s disease Awareness Month. It is during this month that the public is encouraged to “Go Purple with a Purpose” to raise further awareness of the disease. Today, 5.4 million Americans live with Alzheimer’s and it’s estimated that 5.2 million of those people are aged 65 and older, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Alzheimer’s is an “after the fact” type of disease; caregivers and/or family members typically learn about the signs and behaviors after their loved one is diagnosed. The signs of Alzheimer’s and dementia are gradual and appear infrequent in its early stages. Family members and caregivers have a tendency to look back and think, “I should have known,” but it is best to look forward and ask, “What is next?.” There are certain red flags to be aware of. If you are a primary caregiver, you should look for the following signs, which indicate your loved one may be experiencing a decline in memory:

Mood swings

Unable to perform routine activities

Mood disorders, including depression and anxiety, are common in people with Alzheimer’s or dementia and can often result in isolation from family and friends. Emotional distress can also surface from feelings of frustration resulting from a distorted thought process.

Is your loved one’s home and personal hygiene looking unkempt? Are expired medications left around the house? If your loved one is not taking care of these things or not following their medication schedule properly, it could be a sign that they need help with daily tasks.

Changes in eating and sleeping habits Missing appointments A lack of appetite or skipping meals due to forgetfulness may become evident, along with changes in sleep patterns. They may remain awake for longer periods at night or frequently wake-up and start to wander. 62 November 2016

| azhealthandliving.com

Is your loved one forgetting appointments, birthdays or family events? If this begins happening more often, you need to look at the other signs.

Difficulty dealing finances Is the mail piling up and are you finding notices that bills are unpaid? Difficultly managing time or money is common in the early stages of the disease.

Interruptions in thinking, memory and communication Repeating conversations over and over, while it is common during aging, it can also be a sign of Alzheimer’s or dementia. Delusional statements, focusing closely on insignificant details, or not distinguishing or remembering things that are apparent to others are indications that memory and communication abilities are compromised. If you are concerned about a loved one, it is best to seek a second opinion and possibly professional help before jumping to conclusions. Confusion, forgetfulness, and repetition coupled with disorientation and the inability to retain information or learn new things are all common signs, but they can also be a result of other issues, like something as simple as a bladder infection or the need for a medication change. If your loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia, it is time to consider the help of an eldercare specialist, both for your family member and for yourself. Alzheimer’s patients can quickly become isolated, but so can their caregivers. While many family members do what they can, it’s important to note that caring for an Alzheimer’s sufferer is very different. Group homes or assisted living facilities are typically the best gift a family member can provide. Sharing a space with others experiencing Alzheimer’s is actually more enriching and it provides a consistent schedule for them to follow and help performing daily routine activities. It is most important to work with your family physician to get the proper diagnosis and then determine what is best for your family member.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called friends, red lights called enemies, caution lights called family. You will have flats called jobs. But, if you have a spare called determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith and a driver named Jesus—you will make it to a place called success.” – Author Unknown
