"I did my research online for the practices in Arizona that offer varicose vein removal. I knew I wanted the EVLT treatment and wanted the procedure done by a Physician, not a cosmetic place. I narrowed it down to three Physicians and chose Dr. Sharma for his experience. I could not be more pleased with my experience at Arizona Vein & Laser Institute. Dr. Sharma is a wonderful physician. As he is performing the procedure, he explains what he is doing and is so concerned about making you feel comfortable. As for his staff, I cannot say enough good words. One thing I have learned in my lifetime is that your employees are only as good as you are. Dr. Sharma, you have a wonderful staff which says alot about you as an employer. I spent many office visits with them and every time they were pleasant, caring and professional. I was impressed by the way they worked as a team with Dr. Sharma. Thank you so much!" Joy A.
"I had called your office on a Monday morning to see if I could be fit in for an appointment as soon as possible because of a complication I had over the weekend. Being a new patient and never being seen at your office before it didn't matter because the woman who answered was not only kind, friendly and sypmathetic of my situation, but she was able to fit me in that very same afternoon. I have to say how incredibly impressed I was with the entire staff at this office but even more so with Dr. Sharma and Dr. Hecht. Their bedside manners are second to none. Thank you!" Scott Schrimp

Spring is in the air! protect your skin in the sun
M
any of us live in the Valley of the Sun for exactly that, the sun and for the number of days we can be outdoors and enjoy it. But it’s important to remember the havoc this exposure can wreak on our skin. While avoiding skin cancer is the primary reason for discussing SPF protection, the sun is equally destructive to collagen and premature photo-aging. Some think only to apply sun screens when heading to the beach or spending long hours of fun in the sun. But daily application of SPF is required to protect your skin from cancer and photo-aging every day. UVA rays for instance are responsible for photo-aging, penetrating deeper into the skin than its counterpart, and UVA penetrates through glass. That’s right your commute to and from work is actually very harmful to your skin. UVB is more responsible for the carcinogenic effects on the skin and causing sun burn. Regular application of sunscreen to all exposed body parts will offer you 93%-97% more protection daily. SPF clothing is also available to cover exposed areas during drive time or during longer exposure times.
18275 N. 59th Ave., Ste. C-116 Glendale,AZ 85308 (602) 843-4040 physicianskinarrowhead.com
Common complaints about wearing sun screen are that they can feel greasy, oily, or may irritate skin or eyes. This prevents many people from complying with daily use or repeat application. These symptoms are usually due to the multi-vowel chemical agents
used in manufacturing. Chemical sun screen agents such as Aminobenzoic Acid or Benzophenones are chemical absorbers of UVA/UVB and offer only partial protection. Other ingredients offer a physical block from the UV rays. These are seen on active ingredient labels as Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide. They are responsible for the white or opaque coverage many are familiar with and don’t like. However, new technology has micronized the particles to be more cosmetically acceptable. Most medical grade skin care lines offer many sunscreens that contain one or both of these ingredients. As well as some, protect against harmful infrared rays or have DNA repair technology for anti-aging and photo damage. When it comes to which SPF number to purchase it seems one must have a science degree. The FDA will not allow any sun screen manufacturer to label SPF higher than 50 SPF. This is because the curve of protection drops off after 30 SPF and anything higher is just confusion to the consumer. They must also label whether the product is protective against, sunburn, cancer, photo-aging or all three. So this spring while enjoying the outdoors remember to chose an SPF of at least 30, apply often (every 80 minutes), and apply an adequate amount (a shot glass full). Protecting your skin from the sun is your number one beauty secret!

Relief is right here in the West Valley Dr. Kukurin was named a Top Chiropractor by the Consumers Research Council of America. He is listed in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare. With over 20 years of experience using acupuncture, chiropracticand science based nutritional therapies, the results produced by our methods have been featured on local TV newscasts, published in scientific journals, indexed in the National Library of Medicine and have been presented Knee Pain at medical conferences at Johns Hopkins and the Peripheral Nerve Society.
Diabetic Neuropathy, Peripheral Neuropathy Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, Plantar Fasciitis If you are suffering from lower back, buttocks and or leg pain or your feet or legs are cramping, numb or burning especially at night, you almost certainly have a condition which involves the nerves of the legs. The largest nerve in the body, the sciatic nerve (pictured in red to the right), starts in the lower back, runs through the muscles of the buttocks and down to the tip of the toes. If this nerve gets irritated, you can experience really terrible pain anywhere along the course of the nerve. You may also experience burning, numbness and odd sensations in your muscles. Irritation of this nerve may produce severe cramping or crawling sensations in your muscles. Of course, your back and leg pain can be caused by a pinched nerve in your lower back. This can be from a vertebra that is out of place, it can be caused by a slipped disc or it can be caused by spinal stenosis or any combination of these problems. Each of these conditions, bad discs, spinal stenosis or displaced vertebrae have very different treatments. Knowing exactly why you have your back and leg troubles is absolutely essential for effective care.
Headaches, Vertigo, TMJ, Migraines, Sinus Headache Neck and Shoulder Pain, Pinched Nerves, Tennis Elbow and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Spinal Stenosis, Sciatica, Lower Back, Hip and Leg Pain
So how do you find results? The answer is called Integrative Neurology. Neurology is the study of the nerves. This allows us to diagnose tough nerve conditions like spinal stenosis, disc problems and neuropathy. What happens next truly separates our integrative neurology approach from anything else available to help correct lower back, hip, leg and foot problems. We have pioneered techniques to decompress nerves, but also use a number of natural substances that have been shown in recent scientific studies to help nerves re-grow and repair. There are no current drugs that can do this. But that’s not all. We combine special electrical stimulation techniques with acupuncture. A combination that has been shown to correct abnormal nerve function and promote nerve repair. There simply is no better or more comprehensive system for diagnosing and correcting the cause of spinal stenosis, neuropathy and other conditions that cause lower back, hip and leg pain and numbness. Together We Can Make a Difference...
“Go Green, Go God!” Welcome, to our April Issue. This month events worldwide will be celebrated in honor of Earth Day. For those looking to make a difference in the world – the biggest contribution one can give – is to honor God! Here are a few Bible verses to encourage you to “Go Green, Go God!”
Matthew 6:26-30 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
Genesis 2:15 And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. Deuteronomy 22:6 If a bird's nest chance to be before thee in the way in any tree, or on the ground, whether they be young ones, or eggs, and the dam sitting upon the young, or upon the eggs, thou shalt not take the dam with the young:
Deuteronomy 11:12 A land which the Lord thy God careth for: the eyes of the Lord thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year.
Jeremiah 12:4 How long shall the land mourn, and the herbs of every field wither, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? the beasts are consumed, and the birds; because they said, He shall not see our last end.
Isaiah 51:6 Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished.
Jeremiah 2:7 And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit thereof and the goodness thereof; but when ye entered, ye defiled my land, and made mine heritage an abomination.
Deuteronomy 20:19 When thou shalt besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by forcing an axe against them: for thou mayest eat of them, and thou shalt not cut them down (for the tree of the field is man's life) to employ them in the siege:
Revelation 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
Jeremiah 32:17 Ah Lord God! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:
Proverbs 27:18 Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof: so he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured.
Numbers 35:33 So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye are: for blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it.
Psalm 24:1 The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. Until next time,

The Urban Farm “Grow your adventure!”
In 1989, Greg Peterson found the perfect property to call home. Known today as The Urban Farm, the 1/3-acre urban lot near 16th Street and Bethany Home is where you can find Peterson lecturing, recording podcasts and continuously updating his edible garden and yard. “I have more than 80 fruit trees; the entire front and backyard are designed as an edible landscape with chickens in the backyard,” says Peterson. “My mission is to show others that they too can realize the power, joy and deliciousness derived from growing their own food and creating their own urban farm.” The transition from urban garden to urban farm is a simple one – change the way you think about your yard from a hobby to a space that can actually feed your family. People are jumping on board by the thousands, transforming their yards from one that takes time and energy to a productive healthy landscape that produces organic food that tastes amazing and saves money at the grocery store. In 1991, Peterson discovered permaculture, the process he uses to design his edible yard. He likes to call permaculture “the art and science of working with nature,” which explores developing agricultural and other human systems that are sustainable and self-sufficient. That is when he began transforming The Urban Farm into an entirely edible landscape, converting the flowerbeds to garden plots and replacing the non-edible trees with fruit trees. “Through this process, I learned how to dig my toes into the earth, listen to the plants and experiment with new progressive permaculture techniques,” says Peterson.
When he had learned all he could from experience, Peterson went to school for his bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. He then continued on to his master’s degree in Urban and Environmental Planning from Arizona State University. It was while he was there that a professor asked him to write a mission and vision for his life. The Urban Farm was born. Over the last 26 years, Peterson has hosted gardening and farming classes in the community. He uses his property as a visual tool for others interested in urban farming. Every year, he hosts the annual Fruit Tree program. People from all over the city can take classes and learn how to be successful with growing fruit trees, then pre-order fruit trees from him and pick them up just as they arrive. Those who don’t pre-order can come and pick up various citrus and deciduous (apples, peaches, apricots, plums, figs, berries) trees at his pop-up nurseries where thousands of

Valley. “The way to be successful is through knowledge,” says Today, the practice now boasts 52 physicians, more than Peterson. “I have helped plant more than 15,000 fruit trees 200 employees and 20 partner offices Valleywide, including in this city and the education I give out is as valuable as the several in the West Valley cities of Peoria, Avondale, tree people buy.” Glendale, Surprise and Wickenburg. All of the trees Peterson sells are hand picked and selected “We are a cancer center without walls whose services to thrive and produce fruit in the desert climate. At each stretch into every inch of this community, offering the pop-up nursery, Peterson answers questions and advises West Valley with the best doctors, best treatment people on how to successfully create their own edible technologies and best research in the country,” Dr. Reed landscape. says. “Cancer is a disease of survivors – and we want to keep it that way.” “Our agricultural system is broken,” says Peterson. “We now have access to more but less nutritious food than ever before. Urban farmers are the new victory gardeners. You can support yourself, your family and your community and make a positive impact on the world by simply growing your own food.”

Assistance League® of Phoenix Improving the lives of local children across the Valley
There is one bus in Phoenix that garners more excitement than any other – the Delivering Dreams Bus. Big, red and impossible to miss, it makes weekly trips to Title 1 schools across the Valley, supplying kindergarten to eighth grade students with new school uniforms and other basic essentials, including hygiene kits and books. The Delivering Dreams Bus is part of Operation School Bell® and is managed locally by Assistance League of Phoenix. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Operation School Bell – a milestone that has been made even more memorable after having just clothed its 100,000th student. Nationally, Assistance League was formed in 1894 by a group of women who had a shared goal to make a difference within their communities. It was the first nonprofit, nonpolitical and nonsectarian organization founded in the West comprised of volunteers that aimed to help those less fortunate achieve a better quality of life. In 1960, Assistance League of Phoenix was organized as Assistance Guild of Phoenix and was chartered the 36th chapter of National Assistance League on March 15, 1966. Today, it’s nearly 200 members strong locally. Assistance League of Phoenix’s Operation School Bell program serves 85 schools in 11 school districts in Phoenix, Glendale and Scottsdale. It is the largest of six philanthropic programs managed by the independent Phoenix chapter, providing school uniform packages full of all-new items, a hygiene kit with full-sized essentials, and a grade-level book of the child’s choice. “We work with each of the qualifying schools to ensure Operation School Bell is providing essentials children need in order to enter the classroom unhampered by feelings of
lack and ready to learn,” says Brenda Sperduti, executive director. “Our partner schools are responsible for selecting up to 100 children to participate who have the greatest need. Often the parents or caregivers don’t have the resources needed to dress the kids in clothing that fits and is appropriate for school. Students either visit the Delivering Dreams Bus when it comes to their campus or come on a field trip to our Philanthropic Center, located in the Sunnyslope neighborhood of Phoenix.” The bus is a converted 40-foot long city bus made into a mobile dressing center. The bus operates four mornings per week throughout the school year and accommodates approximately 50 kids during each campus visit. The Philanthropic Center has a row of private dressing rooms and a large learning center, where students who are waiting to be dressed can work on crafts, choose a book to read or play a variety of board and computer games. Students visit the center three days a week throughout the school year. Last month, Operation School Bell clothed its 100,000th student, a momentous milestone that speaks to this program’s successful outreach throughout the years. “Our dedicated members and volunteers who give their time and talent so generously have worked tirelessly throughout the years to continually improve delivery of this program to students,” says Sperduti. “When these special occasions come along, they serve as a reminder of the impact these programs have had within the community and they continue to propel us toward our next milestone.” Although Operation School Bell is the largest program, Assistance League of Phoenix has other philanthropic programs, including: HUGS, which provides teddy bears

for children in crisis; WEE HELP, providing layettes for babies born into poverty; Book Gifts which provides books for classrooms full of children; Symphony Education Project, an educational/cultural program for children; and Birthday Book Corners, providing new books for children at nine Title 1 schools on their birthday.
“We love the work we do and invite others to help us spread the joy. The children’s smiles and the volunteers’ warmed hearts are evidence that ‘happy happens here!’ We are always in need of more volunteer hearts and hands,” says Sperduti.

I carry their cards in both my purse and saddlebag when horseback riding to give out when I meet people experiencing severe pain.” – Cindy E. “I’ve been competing in strength athletics since the age of 15 and have been competing at a professional level for the last 5 years. It wasn’t until 2014 that I needed to seek treatment for a patella tendon tear that I received while competing at the Commerce World’s Strongest Man in China. I had only heard about PRP treatments and the great benefits that it could have on one’s injuries - that’s when I found Dr. Lundquist at Active Life Physical Medicine & Pain Center in Avondale, Arizona. To this day, I have received Orthovisc injections to both knees along with PRP. I have also received PRP treatments for muscle tears and other tendon tears that I’ve obtained while competing at World’s Strongest Man. I feel that without Dr. Lundquist knowledge in sports medicine and PRP that I would have had to have surgery. The PRP treatments have played a huge role in keeping me at an elite level. I have and will continue to refer other athletes for their injuries to Dr. Lundquist.” — Jerry Pritchett, 2x World Strongest Man Finalist

Valley Author Releases Fourth Historical Fiction Novel
Award-winning novelist Marcia Fine recently released her seventh book and fourth historical fiction novel, “Hidden Ones — A Veil of Memories.” The book explores the lengths the Crespin family must go to evade religious persecution for secretly practicing Judaism — risking discovery, imprisonment and even death — while helping their grandmother, the beloved matriarch of the family, escape from prison during the 17th century Inquisition. Fine felt this to be a relevant and important topic since today’s citizens of the Southwest are linked to this piece of history. Published by L’Image Press in Scottsdale, “Hidden Ones — A Veil of Memories” is now available for in paperback and Kindle Edition on Amazon.com. azhealthandliving.com |April 2017

The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST), invented and patented by John Chao, DDS, MADG, is a scalpel-free, suture-free procedure for correcting gum recession. During the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique™, a needle is used to make a small hole in the patient’s existing gum tissue. Through this pinhole, special instruments are used to gently loosen the gum tissue. These tools help expand and slide the gumline to cover the exposed root structure. There are no grafts, no sutures, and no incisions needed with the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique™. It simply involves the adjustment of the existing tissue. Dr. Chang and Dr. Svans were two of the first dentists in Arizona and the United States trained and certified as Pinhole Surgical Technique™ Providers. PREVENT
By MS
Silicosis: A Rare but Potentially Harmful Disease In recent decades, much has been done to improve workplace safety. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration instituted one such effort by requiring protective equipment to be used in the workplace. That resolution aimed to limit silica dust inhalation, which can increase workers' risk for a potentially harmful disease known as silicosis. A lung disease caused by breathing in tiny bits of silica, silicosis mostly affects workers in the mining and glass manufacturing industries. People who work in foundries may also be vulnerable to silicosis. Understanding silicosis and its potential side effects can help workers protect themselves against this disease that the American Lung Association notes accounts for more than 100 deaths per year in the United States alone.
What is silica?
for more than 20 years. Trouble breathing may occur in people with chronic silicosis, as silica dust can cause swelling in the lungs and chest lymph nodes. The ALA notes that chronic silicosis appears 10 to 30 years after exposure.
Silica is a naturally occurring crystal that is found in most rock beds. During activities such as mining, quarrying, glass manufacturing and tunneling, silica dust can form. Exposure to that dust can cause scarring of the lungs that can affect a person's ability to breathe.
Accelerated silicosis: Accelerated silicosis occurs after exposure to large amounts of silica in a five- to 15-year time period. Swelling in the lungs and associated symptoms of silicosis will occur faster in people with accelerated silicosis than those with chronic silicosis.
What causes silicosis and who is most vulnerable?
Acute silicosis: Short-term exposure to very large amounts
Exposure to crystalline silica and silica dust causes silicosis. The ALA notes that such exposure may result from chipping, cutting, drilling or grinding soil, sand, granite or other minerals. As a result, workers who work in certain industries are most vulnerable to silicosis. These industries include but are not limited to: · Mining (coal and hard rock) · Construction · Glass manufacturing · Steel · Ceramics · Masonry
Are there different types of silicosis? There are three types of silicosis, and which type a person has can affect his or her prognosis.
Chronic silicosis: The U.S. National Library of Medicine cites this as the most common form of silicosis. Chronic silicosis results from exposure to low amounts of silica dust 30 April 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
of silica can result in acute silicosis. Symptoms of acute silicosis, which can include fever, sharp chest pain and difficulty breathing, may appear suddenly. The lungs of people with acute silicosis may also fill with fluid, resulting in severe shortness of breath and low blood oxygen levels.
Can silicosis be prevented? Workers who work in industries where exposure to silica and silica dust is a possibility should take every preventive measure possible to limit their exposure. Always wear protective gear and clothing, which the law requires employers in certain industries provide to their employees. Smokers who work in occupations vulnerable to silicosis should quit smoking, as smoking further damages and weakens the lungs. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommends medical examinations before accepting employment in industries where silica exposure is possible, and examinations at least every three years thereafter. Signs You’re Way Too Stressed By MS
In its 2015 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that money, stress and family responsibilities are the three most common stressors. While the symptoms of stress are uncomfortable and potentially very dangerous, the APA notes that such indicators also serve as a warning from the body that it needs maintenance and extra care. The following are some of the ways the body might be telling adults to step back and make an effort to relieve stress.
Headaches, muscle tension, neck or back pain: The AIS notes that when a person is under stress, his or her muscles tense up. The contraction of these muscles for extended periods of time can trigger tension headaches and migraines, among other things.
Difficulty falling or staying asleep: Men and women
who are feeling stressed out and also experiencing difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep should consult their physicians about ways to alleviate that stress.
Increased frequency of colds: Stress can attack the body's immune system, making it increasingly vulnerable to colds. The AIS also notes that a weakened immune system also makes the body more susceptible to additional viral disorders, including herpes, and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. Loss of appetite or overeating: Stress can affect the
gastrointestinal system in various ways, including influencing appetite. While not all problems with appetite are indicative of a body that is overstressed, stress can prompt some people to eat much more than they normally do, while others may eat considerably less than they normally would.
Diarrhea or constipation: Another indicator that stress
is compromising the gastrointestinal system is diarrhea or constipation. Again, while these problems are not exclusive to sufferers of stress, when a person is under stress, this can affect which nutrients the body can successfully absorb and how quickly food is metabolized. This can cause some people to experience diarrhea, while others may be constipated. azhealthandliving.com |April 2017

How to Attract the Right Kind of People to Your Life & Eliminate the Toxic Ones Maintaining happy, healthy relationships in your life, whether they’re family, romantic or friendships, has a significant impact on your overall happiness and ability to thrive. Solid, meaningful relationships are important in your adult life. All good relationships require mutual respect and understanding but sometimes we have to hit the pause button to evaluate the people closest to us and determine if these people are nurturing and positive or if they’re toxic and bringing us down. If you’re questioning the relationships in your life and wondering if you’re attracting the right kind of people, here are a few tips to steer you in the right direction.
Before you set out to find a new romance or friendship, know what you’re looking for in a person. Think about the kind of person that you want to bring into your life. Take stock of your own principles and values, evaluate others based on this list, and make sure there’s significant overlap.
Be true to yourself. Do you let people know the real and authentic you? If you’re projecting someone you’re not, you may be attracting the wrong people.
Know where to look for the kind of people you want to have in your life. Good people are out there and you can play a part in finding them. Studies show that spending time with people that are like-minded and have the same goals as you put you in the right environment to meet the right people. Think about your hobbies and your interests and join groups and clubs that match up.
Be open to new people and situations but trust your instincts. You never know where a new relationship
Tips for eliminating toxic people from your life: Recognize the signs of a toxic relationship. Look at how this person fits into your life. Do they drain your energy, criticize you, play a victim, have a negative mindset, exhibit dishonestly or lack compassion? If you answered yes to any of these questions, it might be time to reassess your relationship. Is there true value?
might be found whether it’s a new business connection, a potential romance or a new friendship. When you open yourself up to new opportunities, you give the right people the chance to meet you, but trust your instincts and verify that new people entering your life share your values.
Set your own boundaries and don’t be apologetic.
Get in touch with good people you already know.
play the victim. Don’t fall into the trap.
Have you lost touch with people you really like—a cousin, old classmate, friend from college or previous co-worker? Now is the time to make a list of those people who you’d like to reconnect with and reach out to them.
It may sound cliché, but be the person you’d like to have in your life. Be friendly, generous and kind. You’ll be surprised what comes back to you.

For your own health and sanity, it’s OK to say no or tell someone they’ve pushed you too far or asked for too much.
If you know it’s time to cut the cord—be bold, direct and firm. Toxic people tend to hang around and If you’ve decided you can no longer sustain the relationship with someone or find out information that makes you need to discontinue the relationship, it’s fine to say, “I can’t see you anymore.” As humans we need relationships but we do not need every relationship. Be strong and remember you’re doing this for your own good.
Ways Your Smile Can Affect Your Life By Dr. Jamie Reynolds, author of World Class Smiles Made in Detroit
While smiling might seem like a complicated process, especially when you consider that it takes anywhere from 11 to 17 muscles just to prop up both sides of your lips, the life benefits that smiling provides are immeasurable. Here is a closer look at how your smile can directly affect your life:
Your longevity might depend on it. A 2010 study by Wayne State University measured the span of smiles on Major League Baseball players from their 1952 trading cards. The study found that those who didn’t smile in their pictures lived an average of 72.9 years, versus 79.9 years for the players who did smile.
Smiling has therapeutic effects. There are a number of therapeutic effects that smiling has on a person’s brain and demeanor. Smiling reduces stress hormone levels, taking on similar conditions to cortisol, adrenaline and dopamine, while increasing mood-enhancing endorphins. British researchers found that one smile can provide the same level of brain stimulation as 2,000 chocolate bars, while lowering blood pressure at the same time.
Smiles are a universal language. Non-verbal communication doesn’t always translate well between cultures. In the United States, for example, a thumbs-up signals that all is well. Try that gesture in Australia and the reaction might be a little different than expected, thanks to a vulgar meaning of the hand sign. Smiling at that same person, however, should give the recipient the intended positive response. In every culture and every country across the world, a smile means the same thing, essentially making it a universal language. azhealthandliving.com |April 2017

define exactly what this condition is. There are a number of names for it, reflex sympathetic dystrophy is one, another is complex regional pain syndrome. Whatever you call it, pain related to the sympathetic nervous system is a real challenge. It just doesn’t seem to go away.
It usually starts with an injury, often associated with a nerve and typically in the arms or legs. You see, in some unfortunate people, the original injury heals, but for some unknown reason, the nerves that control the blood vessels malfunction. The condition gets its name from these nerves, known as sympathetic nerves, which become chronically over-excited. This is why this pain syndrome is also known as sympathetically maintained pain, because it is driven by the sympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nerves control internal bodily function, like body temperature through the regulation of blood supply.
First time hearing aid users are unaware of the adjustments and time it takes to get used to hearing devices. They are not programmed and fit right out of a box. individuals meeting specific criteria for vision
Q. Is temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) related to sleep-disordered breathing?
A. A hernia occurs when an abdominal organ loss that cannot be corrected with glasses, A. Temporomandibular joint disorder or other tissue has abnormally protruded through the abdominal wall cavity. They may cause little to no pain at first. A hernia can be in your groin, on your abdomen, or associated with a previous scar. A bulge or hernia that is associated with redness, nausea, or severe pain can mean a strangulated hernia. A strangulated hernia is always a dangerous condition in which the blood supply to the hernia and to its contents is cut off. It must be addressed immediately before sepsis sets in, which can lead to death. A hernia will not go away on its own and will not get better. Delaying treatment can only increase your risk for strangulation and increase your risk for complications. A strangulated hernia will require a traditional open surgery, a 3-5 day hospital stay, as well as a prolonged recovery time. Laparoscopic surgery is best instituted early on, where healing, recovery, and postoperative pain are all significantly improved over traditional open surgery. A laparoscopic procedure allows for smaller incisions, quicker recovery, less pain and no hospital stay. Typically, the procedure can be done through three micro incisions in less than an hour.
contact lenses or surgery. It can be defined by either the level of central vision or peripheral vision, as measured with a visual field test using the patient’s best visual correction with glasses or contacts. Legal blindness applies if vision in the better eye is worse than 20/100 or if less than 20 degrees of visual field remains.
“Legal blindness” is a legal term and does not always reflect functional vision. Most people with legal blindness have some level of remaining vision; however, many do struggle with activities like reading, seeing signs and faces, or navigating from place to place. Those with difficulty seeing to perform daily activities should seek evaluation with a low vision optometrist to determine if low vision devices or training can improve their quality of life. The information contained in this article is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, care, or treatment. (TMD) can be very painful and is often accompanied by headaches, toothaches and more bizarre symptoms. Sleep-disordered breathing symptoms can both overlap and mimic those of sleep-disordered breathing. Many dentists consider temporomandibular joint problems to be somewhat of a gray area because the conditions associated with its complex task of permitting the movement of the jaw without friction is sometimes difficult to define and even more complicated to treat. Some dentists believe that sleep-disordered breathing is partly the existence of a temporomandibular joint problem and partly the manifestation of a sleep-disordered breathing problem. The simplest way to understand the connection: the bruxism (teeth grinding) or jaw shifting associated with sleep-disordered breathing (occurring when sleeping patients are unconsciously trying to find the best possible positioning of their airway) may inflame the temporomandibular joint or exacerbate a problem with the joint that was pre-existing. Headaches, a clicking jaw, malocclusion (misalignment of teeth), and condyle and disc displacement are all associated with sleep-disordered breathing. However, these symptoms often occur in patients with sleepdisordered breathing as well. Research in the journal Sleep determined in 1993 that nocturnal headaches may be caused by temporomandibular joint disorder, or triggered by sleep-disordered breathing - “with very similar clinical manifestations but very different therapeutic implications.” If you have temporomandibular joint disorder, I suggest you ask your dentist to screen you for sleep-disordered breathing.

Q. How does Invisalign work? A. Your dentist will discuss your treatment
options with you during your consultation. After it has been determined that you are a good candidate for Invisalign, he or she will create a 3-D image of your mouth using photos, impressions and x-rays. The dentist will then map out the route your teeth will take to their new, ideal position. Each aligner tray marks a new phase of this transition and is worn for roughly two weeks. Invisalign aligners should be worn for most of the day, 20 to 22 hours, throughout your treatment. Overall treatment times vary depending upon the severity of your orthodontic condition. There are no diet restrictions with Invisalign because you can take the aligner trays out before eating. In fact, not only does this method make eating more enjoyable, it makes maintenance easier, too. When you need to brush or floss your teeth, you simply take out the aligner tray. • Invisalign requires fewer visits to the dentist. While you will change your aligner tray every two weeks, you will only visit your cosmetic dentist every six weeks. • Unlike metal braces, most people will not notice that you are wearing the aligner trays. They are nearly undetectable and completely removable. This is advantageous for times when you want to look your best, such as important events, meetings, or when taking photographs.

Q. Why use a Keller Funnel in breast Q. Why bone density evaluation is important? augmentation? A. There is more than 200,000 breast A. Bone density scanning, also called dualaugmentation procedures performed every year and complications include infections postoperatively due to the surgeon’s fingers touching and pushing in the implant. The obvious solution is to never touch the implant to begin with! To achieve the best results, the surgical team should use the latest techniques and products like the Keller Funnel® 2 that make breast augmentation as safe as possible. This procedure allows a “No-Touch” technique which reduces the chance of complications. During breast augmentation, the implant can be poured from its original packaging directly into the Funnel. The surgeon places the Funnel tip into the prepared pocket and propels the implant into place. Hundreds of thousands of funnels have been successfully used to place silicone gel implants by surgeons around the world and has passed multiple biocompatibility tests, both in vivo and in vitro, thus establishing the biocompatibility of the device.
energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) or bone densitometry, is a test that uses lowenergy x-ray to measure the strength of the density of your bones. DXA is today's established standard for measuring bone density (BMD).
DXA is used to diagnose osteopenia, osteoporosis and assess your risk of developing a fracture. These conditions cause gradual loss of calcium as well as structural changes, causing the bones to become thinner, more fragile and more likely to break. Seventy-five million people are affected worldwide. Bone density decreases with age and after menopause; therefore, getting a DXA is important for early detection and treatment. During the exam, you will lie on a table while a scanner passes over your body, scanning both your hips and spine. A DXA scan is safe, painless and only take a few minutes. A radiologist will analyze the images and send a report to your health care provider, who will discuss the results with you.
When to get your first DXA should be determined by talking with your health care provider. Q. What is kyphoplasty and am I a candidate?
Q. What can I do to maintain a quality energy level?
Q. What procedures to look great fast have a painless and quick recovery?
A. Sometimes as we age, our bones become thin, resulting in osteoporosis. When this happens, the vertebral bodies that make up the spinal column become fragile and weak. Compression fractures can result from this, causing increased pain and debilitation. In addition, these fractures create a forward curvature in your mid back area that pushes you to lean forward, changing your center of gravity. A procedure available that can help correct this, and almost instantly reduce the pain you are experiencing if the compression fracture is new, is Kyphoplasty.
A. Just like an automobile needs gasoline and maintenance to run well, we need to eat healthy and get doctor checkups when necessary. Choosing good food helps determine our energy level and remember: God created tasty, beautiful, healthy fruits and vegetables in all colors of the rainbow. Adding nuts and natural foods is an added bonus.
A. As we age there are many significant changes in facial skin and volume seen both anatomically and aesthetically. Youthful facial contour changes are seen as migration of fat pads and skin sagging occurs, resulting in a heavier lower face (jowls and folds) and a flattened upper face (hollows and wrinkles). We begin to notice these changes in our early to mid-thirties with more severe changes seen in the decades that follow.
Coffee and caffeine energy drinks may boost your energy level for a while but can result in a “crash “later on. One can of soda contains more sugar than the American Heart Association recommends for daily intake. Life is full of stress: it can affect our energy level and steal our joy. Simplifying our lifestyle can resolve some stress issues, such as completing projects that loom over us, taking a walk, taking time to smell the flowers, enjoying the sunshine, even saying “hi” to neighbors.
A quick and painless way to replace facial volume without surgery is to inject hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers, such as Juvederm XC, Voluma XC and Restylane Lyft, into areas where fat naturally occurs in a youthful face. By adding volume to the cheek area, around the lateral eyebrow and tear troughs, the face appears fuller, rested and youthful. These fillers may also be used to contour the nose or chin with no pain or down time. Collagen stimulating products like Scupltra Aesthetic can also be used to obtain a youthful facial contour.
Having a strong family, good friends and a life based on attending religious services regularly may not only give you strength and comfort on life’s sometimes difficult journey, it may help you to live longer. “Those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.” Isaiah 40:31
Another fast and easy way to lift the lower face skin laxity is to use PDO threads, NuMesh and Nu-Lift. The threads are inserted with a needle, removed right away, and remain in place until they dissolve in four to six months. The presence of these extremely safe threads stimulates collagen production and long-term results, lasting one to two years. A combination of upper face fillers and lower face threads can be done in 30 minutes and results seen immediately. Perfect for that instant refreshed look.
Kyphoplasty is an innovative way to improve pain from the compression fracture and promotes restoration of the vertebral body. This is now available to be done in the outpatient setting, if your physician feels that you are a good candidate. Under X-ray guidance, the compression fractures are identified, and through a needle, a balloon is inflated and medical grade cement is placed. Once the cement has solidified, often the pain will be reduced and function and mobility will be restored. This is a fairly low-risk procedure that can help dramatically improve your quality of life. In addition to treating osteoporotic compression fractures, it can be utilized for traumatic compression fractures. A physician knowledgeable in this area can discuss with you if you are a candidate or not.

Q. Why should I advertise my business?
Q. What are microgreens?
A. No matter how wonderful your service or product is, if you don't advertise, nobody will know. The goal of advertising should be to cost effectively reach the largest audience possible to attract new patients/ customers. If done correctly, advertising can be a wonderful investment; if done poorly, advertising can become financially draining.
A. Once the sprout starts to grow but well before it reaches maturity it's considered a microgreen. Sprouts may be harvested within just a few days while microgreens are typically harvested when they've reached a height of about 2 or more inches.
Here are four tips to start a successful advertising plan:
1. Go after your target audience; in the right places! No product or service will appeal to everyone. Do research to understand who your audience is and determine what they read, watch and listen to. Find your market and be everything you can be to that audience. 2. Highlight your competitive advantage; what makes you unique? Find your competitive edge. Too many ads highlight all the features and services and fail to sell their specific benefits. Unless you highlight these benefits, how can you deliver value to potential patients/customers? 3. Establish your image. You have a car full of hungry kids and there are only two places to stop for lunch; you recognize the McDonald’s arches but you have never heard of the other place. Where will you stop? Image counts; don’t lose a chance to make an impression. 4. You have to spend money to make money. Advertising is not the place to cut corners. Doing so affects the bottom line. Successful advertising may cost some money, but that is because it works. – Great Central Sun Media Group 602.335.0771 advertise@azhealthandliving.com

According to research by the USDA in which 25 different microgreens were evaluated, all were found to have higher nutritional densities than their full-grown counterparts, including 10 times higher amounts of valuable antioxidant compounds. Vitamins like A, B-complex, C and E increase in sprouted foods, sometimes by 20 percent within just a few days of germination. In fact, some sprouts increase in vitamin B1 by up to 285 percent, vitamin B2 by up to 515 percent and niacin by up to 256 percent. Sprouts/microgreens can also contain up to 100 times more enzymes than their fullgrown counterparts, which allow your body to extract higher levels of vitamins, minerals and nutrients from other foods, and help protect against chemical carcinogens to boot. Minerals also bind to proteins, making them more bioavailable. Alkaline minerals such as calcium and magnesium help balance your body chemistry for both weight loss and better health overall. The good news is that you can now take advantage of these microgreens in a convenient single serving packet. You don't need to spend the time, effort and equipment to grow microgreens. Q. Why should you use an agency to secure your caregivers? A. As I was driving to work recently a breaking news report on KTAR Radio caught my attention: “Two Arizona caretakers are sentenced for exploiting seniors.” Caregiver one admitted to stealing $363,000 from a 93-year-old man over a four-year period. She confessed to gambling away the money. Caregiver two embezzled more than $20,000 from an 81-year-old’s checking and money market accounts. It would be interesting to investigate how the caregivers were hired to work for these seniors. If I had to take a guess, the caregivers were likely hired directly by the senior or a family member because paying them “under the table” was cheaper than using an agency. After all, if you hire them directly you would not have to pay their taxes and Social Security. You wouldn’t need to assume the cost of liability insurance, bonding insurance, workers' compensation and human resources (employees) to check these caregivers out to see if they were viable candidates “trustworthy enough” to care for a loved one like any credible agency would do. There is a reason why an agency charges more than the “private person” you hire for safety and peace of mind. All of the answers are above. And, if and when there might be an incident, the agency stands behind it. Enough said!

Q. I’m a first-time homebuyer…where Q. How much money will I need to Q. If I continue to work and receive insurance through my employer do do I start? save for retirement? I need to sign up for Medicare at 65? A. Buying a home is very exciting but also A. One of the absolute first items on your can be very nerve wrecking experience for to-do list should be to establish an itemized A. There is much to consider before knowing first time buyers. The first thing you’ll want to do is contact a lender. Your lender will pull your credit and let you know where you are on the credit spectrum. They may advise you to make some changes to your credit or ways to improve your current credit situation. Because some of these changes can take time I strongly advise seeing your lender as soon as you know that home buying is in your future even if it is 6-12 months before your lease is up to ensure that we can find and fix any potential issues. After reviewing your credit, we will analyze your income, to qualify you will need a 2year job history. Debts are calculated against your income and you will then be given the amount of which you are pre-approved for. Be prepared to have documents available to support your answers: 2 years of taxes and w2’s, 30 days of paystubs, 60 days of bank statements, are among the items that will be requested. Once received, your loan officer will issue a prequalification form that will enable you to start shopping. If you don’t have a good realtor in mind feel free to ask your loan officer as they will usually be able to recommend some great ones. Although buying can be scary, it will be so much easier when you have good people on your side.

Once you spend six months in retirement, you'll have a better handle of what each month will look like. That, in return, will have an impact on what your day-to-day expenses will be. Sure, you may not have the same commute expenses or need a work wardrobe once you’re retired, but you will still have to cover some basic overhead expenses. Remember to include healthcare insurance cost as part of your expenses. If you plan to retire before age 65, you won’t yet be eligible for Medicare and you may not have retiree coverage from your employer. A recent study published by a major Wall Street firm estimated that the average couple will need nearly $245,000 over the course of their retirement just to pay for out-of-pocket medical costs.

Twenty is an important number in this situation. If your employer has 20 or more employees, the group insurance will remain in the first payer position and you will have the option to remain on the plan after turning 65. In most cases you would want to initiate your Medicare Part A (hospital) benefit while remaining on the employer plan. If you or a spouse has contributed into Medicare through payroll deductions for 40 quarters (10 years) there would be no cost associated with Part A. You could however, delay enrolling in Part B (medical) and postpone paying the monthly premium of $134 or more (determined by adjusted gross income) by staying on the employer plan. How Families Can Go Green Together Interest in eco-friendly lifestyles has long since spread beyond environmentalists and activists and has become a goal for people from all walks of life. Going green can even be done as a family. Families have multiple incentives to embrace an ecofriendly lifestyle. Going green can protect the planet for younger members of the family who will have to confront the consequences of today's decisions for decades to come. Going green also can save families money the moment they decide to change their lifestyles, providing a more immediate incentive. Families interested in making their efforts to be more eco-friendly a team effort can embrace the following strategies.
Wash clothes in cold water. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, heating water accounts for roughly 90 percent of the energy washing machines require to clean clothes. By washing clothes exclusively in cold water, families can drastically reduce the energy their washing machines consume, and clothes will still be clean at the end of each wash cycle. Wash only in full loads. Whether washing clothes or washing dishes, families who want to go green together can resolve to only run their washing machines or dishwashers when both are full. The EPA notes that only doing full loads of laundry can save more than 3,400 gallons of water each year. When washing dishes, do only full loads but avoid overcrowding the dishwasher. Overcrowding might mean some dishes are not thoroughly cleaned, which may require running another load or washing them by hand, both of which can be wasteful. Turn off the faucets when brushing teeth. Another way families can pitch in to conserve energy and save money together is by turning off the faucets when they brush their teeth. Parents of young children can brush their teeth with their youngsters in the morning and at night, 44 April 2017

explaining to them how brushing without the faucet running can save untold gallons of water every year. This will conserve water and lower the monthly water bill.
Hang energy saving curtains. Energy-saving curtains reduce the amount of heat that passes through windows when the weather outside is cold, keeping more warm air inside and reducing the need to hike up the thermostat. In the summertime, heat from the outside may pass through window glass easily, but it's far more difficult for heat to pass through fabric. By hanging energy-saving curtains together with their children, parents can explain how the curtains are more than just decorative; they are also a helpful ally in protecting the planet. Going green together as a family can help parents save money and provide a valuable teaching opportunity that can benefit youngsters and the planet for years to come.
Create & Hide Unbreakable Easter Eggs By MS
Easter is one of the most important days of the year for Christians. Easter Sunday is filled with symbolism and tradition, some of which harken back to early Christianity. Even though these traditions have endured, Easter eggs themselves might not be so strong. This year, Easter celebrants may want to experiment with different materials that are more forgiving and more enduring than standard eggs.
Wooden eggs. Families may find that wooden eggs are much more forgiving than standard eggs. Wooden eggs don't have to be boiled, and they don't need time to harden, and they're quite maneuverable for young fingers.
Decorators can explore different ways to color wooden eggs. Acrylic paints are readily available and safe for users of any age. Wood stains or wood markers also can be used to give the eggs a natural finish. Others may want to rip small pieces of decorative paper to create a decoupage effect on their wooden eggs.
Sew soft eggs. Those who are handy with a needle and thread can explore patterns for making soft, stuffed eggs. Cozy fleece or other fabrics can be sewn together to make the general egg shape. Then the egg is filled with polyester filling, feathers or another soft material. Ribbons, buttons, trims, and other decorative touches can personalize the eggs and add a touch of whimsy. Check out www.sew4home.com for their ideas on handmade Easter eggs.
Modeling clay. Children who love to get their hands dirty may enjoy making Easter eggs out of modeling materials. Colors can be blended together to create a marbleized effect. Depending on the clay medium, the eggs may air-harden or may need to be heated at a low temperature in the oven to fully cure.

Diagnosing the Differences Between PT and OT The body is a complex organism that is the sum of all its parts. When a portion of the body is not working optimally, pain, lack of motion and a host of other concerns can arise. At some point in their lives, many people will visit therapists to restore functionality to a part of their body that was affected by injury. Therapists come in various types, including physical therapists or PTs and occupational therapists or OTs. Some may not understand what distinguishes a PT from an OT. Although physical therapy and occupational therapy are sometimes used interchangeably, they are actually two different, but similar, disciplines. According to St. Catherine University, PT involves treating the actual impairment, while OT helps the patient complete necessary tasks with the impairment. To break this down even further, consider the following scenario: An athlete stumbles on the field, injuring his knee in the process. While the injury does not require surgery, it is severe enough for bracing and requires that the athlete not apply pressure through walking. He visits a PT to help determine which kinds of assistive devices might remedy the situation as well as which exercises and stretches can work the knee safely so that it remains limber while healing. The OT instructs the athlete on the proper way to use crutches, canes or a wheelchair while the knee remains immobile. The OT also can illustrate how to get in and out of the shower or walk up and down stairs with the adaptive devices.
with life-long disabilities enjoy the highest quality of life.
While PT may be focused on treating the injury itself, OT is more likely to help the patient adapt to home and work environments to allow for a better quality of life and help the injured person maintain his or her independence. Some OTs will do on-site assessments and help with those modifications.
Both professions require meeting high education standards with knowledge of physical anatomy. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, some entry-level occupational and physical therapists hold master's degrees, but a vast majority of these positions require a doctoral degree in the respective field. However, the schooling required can be worth it, as both fields are expected to grow considerably in the coming decades.
Despite their differences, PT and OT do overlap, and some therapists may work together to make sure there's a seamless integration of practices. Both PTs and OTs are involved in injury recovery or in assisting individuals
Physical therapists and occupational therapists can help people feel better faster and help injury sufferers maintain their independence through an injury or disability.

Adult Sports Leagues
By MS
Fitness comes in many forms, and for a growing number of people, sports is one of the most appealing ways to stay in shape. Health and socialization are the driving forces behind the growing popularity of adult recreational sports leagues, particularly among millennials. According to Sports Marketing Surveys USA, a research company that provides data for the Sports and Fitness Industry Association, millennials are twice as likely as their Generation X counterparts to participate in team sports as adults. However, adult leagues attract people of all ages and from both genders. Adults who played sports as children may be particularly drawn to adult sports leagues, which offer a way for them to maintain connections to sports they love. In addition to leagues sponsored by local governments, the YMCA offers a number of adult programs across the country. The YMCA says that their sports leagues provide a perfect opportunity to be active and social and to reconnect or start fresh with a sport. Some of the organization's most popular adult sports leagues include basketball, soccer, hockey, tennis, volleyball and golf. Many community centers, churches and even local businesses sponsor adult sports leagues, which help build a sense of community among residents and often connect players with local businesses and charitable or goodwill organizations. Although some recreational leagues are free to join, many are for-profit businesses. The cost for players can run anywhere from $50 to $90 per person for a season. These fees help cover the costs associated with setting up teams and the fees necessary to compensate referees and rent facilities where games will be played. Adult recreational sports leagues provide great alternatives to the gym for people who want to be physically active. azhealthandliving.com | April 2017

How Does Solar Electricity Work? Solar panels are seen more and more on roofs of residential homes and even some businesses. Due in part to more aggressive marketing by solar energy companies, as well as greater awareness by customers, solar energy has become increasingly popular in recent years. The Solar Energy Industries AssociationÂŽ reports that solar energy in the United States is booming. The association offers that, since the passage of The Solar Investment Tax Credit in 2006, solar has experienced a compound annual growth rate of more than 60 percent. While many might assume that environmental preservation is the driving force behind the growing popularity of solar energy, it's actually the financial benefits of solar energy that are leading the way. One Block Off the Grid polled nearly 200 solar homeowners to learn more about their motivations for going solar. Roughly, 75 percent would not have gone solar if there was no economic benefit to doing so. A number of people who have switched to solar say they are getting a high rate of return on the investment. The average electricity bill a person saw prior to solar energy hovered around $177 a month. After the conversion, bills were now as low as $55. Those who are still pondering the decision to go solar may want to know more about how it works. Although the guidelines vary depending on location and the energy company issuing the bill, here are some of the basics. Generating solar electricity Solar electricity is generated through a process known as the photovoltaic affect. Sunlight shines on solar panels, which are mounted on the roof of the home or in another prominent location. Each panel typically has between 60 to 72 solar cells strung together. These photovoltaic cells use the irradiation in sunlight to stimulate the flow of electrons in the semiconductor material, which creates direct current, or DC, electricity. Systems that directly convert the DC to alternating current, or AC, the type of 48 April 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
power voltage used in a house, do so by way of an inverter. The inverter feeds power to the circuit board.
Demand and excess When the demand from a home or business is equal to the amount of solar power being generated, the system is working optimally. When solar power falls a bit short, grid power will make up the deficit. There's also the possibility that excess electricity will be produced. In a grid connect system, certain areas may operate with a 1:1 net metering policy, states Solar Reviews, which offers consumer reviews of solar products. This means that the utility company will credit a homeowner 1 to 1 for every kilowatt-hour produced in excess because the excess energy goes back into the grid system. This is called "back-feeding" the grid. It's handy for powering homes at night with standard electricity at no additional cost. If the production of kwhs exceeds what is purchased from the utility each year, some utility companies will continue to credit for the excess. Solar electricity systems are changing the way people think about energy. With the financial motivation to do so, consumers who embrace solar energy are helping the environment while also saving money.

Jessica Chastain Talented and reserved
In the highly anticipated film “The Zookeeper's Wife,” actress Jessica Chastain portrays a brave heroine who helps save Jewish lives during the Nazi German invasion of Poland. Amazingly, the movie is based on a true story. For Chastain, who is known for being involved in several social causes off screen, the multifaceted role seemed an almost perfect fit. “The sentiments are genuine, but they also dovetail nicely with Chastain’s latest movie, ‘The Zookeeper’s Wife,’ which tells the true story of Antonina Żabińska, who ran the Warsaw Zoo with her husband during the Nazi invasion and went on to save hundreds of lives (and risk her own) by hiding persecuted Jewish people in stalls and cages,” cites a recent article in American Way magazine. “Chastain—a Golden Globe winner and two-time Oscar nominee—is famously scrupulous about researching her roles, but you feel that this one wasn’t such a stretch. ‘If I see something that’s not right or an injustice,” she says, “I can’t not talk about it.’” According to NBC Bay Area, “Chastain told a news conference she felt ‘so inspired’ by the story of human kindness ‘that we need so much today.’” Chastain has garnered a reputation as a serious, well-studied actress who takes her craft seriously and is notoriously guarded about her personal life, according to multiple sources. 50 April 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
She has starred on both stage and film, with prominent roles in movies like “Interstellar,” “The Martian,” “Zero Dark Thirty,” “The Huntsman” films, “The Help,” and more. In 2012, she won a Golden Globe and, that the same year, was recognized by Time magazine as one of the “100 most influential people in the world.” Still, with all of the accolades, many media sources point to the fact that, while she publically supports many social causes, Chastain remains mum on personal details. “I mean, I want to be seen by my friends and family, but in this restaurant, I don’t want everyone to stare at me,” she told American Way during her interview. “I want to have a conversation with another person and not feel like I’m performing.” Some of the social issues that Chastain publically supports include animal rights—she’s a dedicated vegan —and topics like equal pay for women in the workplace. She often mentions these causes in media interviews and on her popular social media channels. “I want to make sure I'm contributing to creating diversity in the industry,” she wrote about the film industry in a guest essay for The Hollywood Reporter in 2015. “I want to work with anyone who is talented, but I know that some people have to work harder to succeed in this business than others.” Yet, for a star who is so private, Chastain is very active on social media, giving her growing fan base an inside look into her world. In addition to multiple future projects where she’s sure to play a starring role, she recently launched her own production company called Freckle Films. To follow Chastain on social media, visit www.twitter.com/jes_chastain or look for the verified “Jessica Chastain” page on Facebook. azhealthandliving.com |April 2017

EXCEL & ACHIEVE
CAREER, BUSINESS & FINANCE By Jim Chilton, founder of the nonprofit Society for Financial Awareness, www.sofausa.org
Don’t Let These Financial Blunders Leave Your Wallet Empty To err is human, but when mistakes affect your pocketbook it’s not exactly divine. Don’t feel alone if you’ve committed a financial blunder, though. Two-thirds of Americans have made a significant money mistake somewhere along the way. Since April is National Financial Literacy Month, this is a good time for anyone to pledge to do a better job handling money. You can’t let your emotions get in the way when you are trying to meet your financial goals. When it comes to finances, there is always going to be at least a little uncertainty. You go a long way toward financial stability if you avoid these common blunders:
Living without a ‘net.’ Bad things happen in life, even to the best people who are trying to do the right things. That’s why you need to set aside savings that will serve as an emergency fund in case you suddenly have major medical problems or lose your job. Aim to have a six to 12-month cushion that would cover your mortgage, groceries, utilities and any other necessities of day-to-day living.
Failing to check credit reports. More than 70 percent of credit reports contain some sort of error. Meanwhile, identity theft is on the rise. You should check your credit reports annually to make sure you are not a victim.
Giving little thought to retirement. Many people fail to properly prepare for retirement. If you think Social Security will take care of you, think again. Social Security is designed as supplemental income, not something that can replace your entire paycheck. You need to plan and save to make sure you can lead the lifestyle you want in your later years.
Racking up credit card debt. Credit seems to rule, but cash should be your real king. Americans are carrying more than $800 billion in credit card debt. Making a conscious effort to use cash will help wean you off your reliance on plastic. If you are struggling with credit card debt, you need to start making a plan to get rid of that debt. Seeking advice in the wrong places. Uncle Felix may mean well, but he’s not necessarily the ideal person to offer 56 April 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
you advice on the stock market. A trained professional is your best bet. Sure, word-of-mouth can be helpful, but it can be equally hurtful. Before you pick someone to help you with investments, do your homework because you want someone with a good reputation. Check with the Better Business Bureau and do a Google search to see what else you can learn.
Trying to do too much, too quickly. Financial problems that took years to create aren’t going to be fixed overnight. So ease into your new financial plan. Instead of a dramatic overhaul that could leave you frustrated, try to make small changes that will lead to larger commitments. Even as we get older and presumably know more, we are still bound to make a misstep here or there. We simply can’t know it all, especially when it comes to our finances. But if we realize our limitations, we can at least learn to make fewer mistakes and do a better job of setting and meeting the goals we have for our money.
WHY ADVERTISE WITH The Right Target Audience It is the most important factor, which makes a world of difference and will move your business from market penetration, to market domination.

How Seniors Can Preserve Their Brains Physical activity and proper diet and nutrition can help people age 50 and older maintain their physical health. But there are also ways aging men and women can preserve brain health in an effort to prevent or delay the cognitive decline that affects millions of seniors across the globe. It's easy to overlook the importance of keeping the brain healthy. However, a decline in brain function can result in poor concentration, memory loss and a host of other issues. Sometimes, by the time symptoms present themselves, it may be too late to reverse any damage. Research suggests that a combination of nutrition and mental, social, and physical activities may have a greater impact with regard to maintaining and improving brain health than any single activity. Harvard Medical School also states that volunteering, caring for others and pursuing hobbies may benefit the brains of older adults. A study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry found participants who reported higher levels of purpose in life exhibited superior cognitive function despite the accumulation of abnormal protein depositions (amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles) in the brain, a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease. Having a purpose also may help those who do not have Alzheimer's disease. In addition to the suggestions mentioned above, those who want to boost brain health can consider these strategies.
Start exercising the brain early on. A study published in 2012 in the British Medical Journal examined cognitive function in people ages 45 to 70. Researchers found evidence of cognitive decline in the 45-year-old participants as well as the older participants. It's never too early to put a brain health plan into motion. Read more books. Reading can open individuals up to new vocabulary and scenarios that promote a stronger brain and recall ability. Enrolling in an education course at a local college, community center or online also may be beneficial. 60 April 2017
| azhealthandliving.com
Hit the gym. Several studies suggest an association between physical activity and reduced risk of cognitive decline. This could be because exercise elevates heart rate, which pumps more blood to the brain and body. Supplement with DHA. DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid that is dominant in the brain. Adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which is generally high in natural sources of omega-3, including fish and mono-unsaturated fats from olives, olive oil, nuts and seeds. Supplements also may help, but individuals should consult with their doctors about which products to take. Challenge the mind. Men and women can engage in challenging activities that stray from their routines. Puzzles, strategic games, jigsaw puzzles, or difficult hobbies can benefit the brain. Keep a close-knit group of friends. Regular conversation and social interaction is a key component of any brain health wellness plan. Slowing cognitive decline and promoting greater brain health should be a priority for adults of all ages.

What is a Silent Stroke? The brain is a complex organ responsible for controlling many different bodily functions. When working at optimal capacity, the brain is a wonder to behold. When illness or trauma affects the brain, various parts of the body may not work as they should. One of the more devastating things that can affect the brain is stroke. Stroke describes a sudden stoppage of blood from reaching the brain. Harvard Medical School states that if a large number of brain cells are starved of blood supply, they can die. With their demise, a person's memory and ability to speak and move can be compromised. While many strokes come on suddenly, certain factors may indicate a person is at risk. Such factors may include prior heart attacks, genetics, high blood pressure, smoking or a prior stroke. However, in a particular type of stroke - a "silent stroke" - symptoms are far more subtle and difficult to spot. Silent cerebral infarction, often referred to, as “SCI or silent stroke," is a brain injury likely caused by a blood clot interrupting blood flow to the brain, offers the American Stroke Association. Silent strokes increase risk for other strokes and can be a sign of progressive brain damage. A silent stroke is typically only noticed as a side component of an MRI of the brain. Many times patients do not recall having a stroke and never felt any symptoms. Silent strokes should not be mistaken for mini-strokes. Mini-stroke is a brief but discrete and memorable event, with symptoms appearing for a few minutes or a few hours. According to a study on silent stroke titled "Functional and Cognitive Consequences of Silent Stroke Discovered Using Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging in an Elderly Population" and published in the Journal of American Geriatrics Society, silent strokes are quite common and can have serious consequences. Researchers have found that silent stroke is associated with impairments in tests of cognitive function rather than movement-oriented performance tests like rising from a chair. Almost 50 percent of studied silent strokes affected frontal circuit components of the brain, such as the frontal cortex, basal 62 April 2017
| azhealthandliving.com
ganglia and thalamus. Lesions in these brain structures compromised executive functions and were related to vascular dementia. Another study showed associations between silent stroke and visual field deficits, weakness in walking on heels, history of memory loss, migraines, and lower scores in cognitive function tests. The "silent" part of a silent stroke also refers to the areas of the brain that the stroke affects. Experts at Harvard Medical School explain that, during a silent stroke, an interruption in blood flow destroys areas of cells in a part of the brain that is "silent," meaning that it doesn't control any vital functions. Researchers say that, over time, the damage from silent strokes can accumulate, leading to more and more problems with memory. Collectively, silent strokes become silent no longer. There are certain ways to reduce the risk of any type of stroke. These include: · Managing high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels · Quitting smoking · Reducing the risk of diabetes and effectively treat the condition if it is present · Losing weight to prevent obesity · Exercising and avoid a sedentary lifestyle · Taking a low-dose aspirin or a drug that prevents blood clots. Silent strokes largely go unrecognized but can lead to significant brain injury. Getting the facts can help men and women reduce their risk for silent stroke.
Adopting a Dog or Cat Later in Life By MS
It's not uncommon for seniors to feel lonely or depressed when they retire, their children move away or they lose a spouse or close friend or friends. The American Humane Society states that studies show pets help seniors overcome loneliness and depression by providing affection, company and entertainment. Pets also provide much-needed mental stimulation, and many pet owners find their pets help them become more physically active as well. Seniors who adopt pets may also feel a sense of purpose when helping animals who may not have anywhere to live. This is particularly true of older companion animals, which many young families are understandably hesitant to adopt. Mature pets might be an ideal fit for seniors. When seniors are looking to adopt a pet, there are various reasons why older pets or particular animals might be the perfect fit for them. ¡ Adult pets may already be house trained, saving seniors the trouble and effort of training them. ¡ Seniors may find cats fit their lifestyles more than dogs, as cats are less active and do not need to be walked or played with as much as dogs. Cats also are small and easily maneuverable, meaning even seniors who have arthritis or other physical limitations can easily care for cats. Many cats are also content to spend long periods of time sleeping on their owners' laps. ¡ Small dogs that can be active within the house might be a good idea as well, especially for seniors with mobility issues. They're also easily transported to and from vet appointments. It's important that seniors carefully weigh the benefits of adopting a pet against any limitations they may have. Having a backup plan for care is advantageous as well. Seniors should not adopt a pet if they anticipate frequent travel or medical care that requires they be away from home for long periods of time. azhealthandliving.com | April 2017

There is a curve called failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called friends, red lights called enemies, caution lights called family. You will have flats called jobs.
