"I did my research online for the practices in Arizona that offer varicose vein removal. I knew I wanted the EVLT treatment and wanted the procedure done by a Physician, not a cosmetic place. I narrowed it down to three Physicians and chose Dr. Sharma for his experience. I could not be more pleased with my experience at Arizona Vein & Laser Institute. Dr. Sharma is a wonderful physician. As he is performing the procedure, he explains what he is doing and is so concerned about making you feel comfortable. As for his staff, I cannot say enough good words. One thing I have learned in my lifetime is that your employees are only as good as you are. Dr. Sharma, you have a wonderful staff which says alot about you as an employer. I spent many office visits with them and every time they were pleasant, caring and professional. I was impressed by the way they worked as a team with Dr. Sharma. Thank you so much!" Joy A.

"I had called your office on a Monday morning to see if I could be fit in for an appointment as soon as possible because of a complication I had over the weekend. Being a new patient and never being seen at your office before it didn't matter because the woman who answered was not only kind, friendly and sypmathetic of my situation, but she was able to fit me in that very same afternoon. I have to say how incredibly impressed I was with the entire staff at this office but even more so with Dr. Sharma and Dr. Hecht. Their bedside manners are second to none. Thank you!" Scott Schrimp

elcome to our October Issue. When you work for God and not for people, and you are closer to your destiny, the challenges you face may become tougher. However, remember God has equipped you to weather any storm. Your destiny is too great, and your assignment is too important to allow any barriers to come between you and your purpose.
When you find yourself on unfamiliar ground, remember God didn’t crown you with favor to be easily shaken- set your mind on things that are above, because the battle is not yours! Colossians 3:2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 2 Chronicles 20:15 Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's.
Exodus 14: 27 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and when the morning appeared, the sea returned to its full depth, while the Egyptians were fleeing into it. So the Lord overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. Joshua 3:13 And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests who bear the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, that the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off, the waters that come down from upstream, and they shall stand as a heap. Micah 2:13 The breaker is come up before them: they have broken up, and have passed through the gate, and are gone out by it: and their king shall pass before them, and the Lord on the head of them. Deuteronomy 33:25
Isaiah 40:4
Your sandals shall be iron and bronze; As your days, so shall your strength be.
The crooked places shall be made straight, and the rough places smooth;
Philippians 1:6
Isaiah 54:17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord.
Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ; Until next time, May the Lord set you free! “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” ~ John 8:32
Psalm 18: 29 For by You I can run against a troop, by my God I can leap over a wall. Exodus 14:16

Ability360 Sports & Fitness Center Valley facility is a model of inclusiveness
Nothing stops Jennifer Chaillie from moving forward. Not even a spinal cord injury from a diving-pool accident that left her a quadriplegic in 2011. “I was pretty active before I was injured, so it wasn’t a huge thing to want to get back to physical activity,” explains the 34-year-old trauma therapist. “That’s my time for me. It was automatic once I found a place that was adaptive.” “That place,” the Ability360 Sports & Fitness Center, was still being built during Chaille’s three-month stay at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, but she knew right away that “as soon as it opened I wanted to get to the adaptable equipment and the benches for weight lifting.” When the 45,000 square foot, $13 million facility debuted in October 2011 with wheelchair accessible weight machines, an aquatic area equipped with lifts and elevators, accessible locker rooms, indoor jogging track and even a climbing wall, Jennifer signed up. Today, one of only three facilities like it in the United States, and the only one in the Western United States, the Ability360 Sports and Fitness Center boasts more than 1,800 active members, with and without disabilities, and has set the standard for visiting groups from around the world hoping to create similar opportunities in their communities. In addition to recent weight-room upgrades, expanded programming including a range of adaptive sports programs for children, youth and adults, and its United States Olympic Committee designation as a Gold Level Paralympic Sports Club, Ability360 Sports & Fitness is a model of inclusiveness. “Had there been something like this when I was first disabled, it would have been a great benefit to me,” says Phil Pangrazio, President and CEO of Ability360, a nonprofit organization that offers and promotes programs that empower people with disabilities to take personal responsibility to achieve or continue independent lifestyles. “I knew we wanted to be inclusive. Nothing this organization does involves segregation of any kind. It’s so much better in an inclusive environment where the worlds of people with and without disabilities meet and intersect.” Steve Zimmerly, a 67-year-old able-bodied member, couldn’t agree more. He learned about Ability360 from his friend, Rick Olson, “who is missing his left leg and who would tell me about the ‘leg place’ where he put on his leg and learned to walk.” Zimmerly, now retired after 40 years with Motorola 14 October 2016 | azhealthandliving.com
and General Dynamics, works out 90 minutes a day five days a week. “I belonged to other gyms, but never went,” he says. “I’ve gotten to know the staff there and I have other friends who are disabled and they are an inspiration to me. If they can do it, I certainly can too and that’s why I like the place.” Ability360 offers affordable monthly memberships and even scholarships to those who qualify. Chaillie, an Arizona State University alum with degrees in psychology and social work, works with children who have been abused, neglected, removed from their parents’ home or even witnessed homicides. She doesn’t confine her fitness regimen to the gym where she swims, lifts weights and works the recumbent and ski machines. She also hand cycles up to 18 miles, kayaks with Arizona Disabled Sports and is training for wheelchair racing 10K’s. “I did marathons before my injury, and my goal is to get back to it,” she says. “When I’m outside, I usually need someone to go with me. At Ability360, I can do it without help and it gives me a good balance to change my workouts.” Ability360 operates with a lean staff of eight full- and 10 part-time employees and a huge volunteer base that last year donated more than 6,000 hours assisting with team sports, youth programs, special events and daily duties. Staff members include recreation therapists, exercise physiologists, personal trainers and professionals with other fitness certifications as well as marketing and administration personnel. Visit the Asian Small Clawed Otter at Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park! By Kristy Morcom
The Asian Small Clawed Otter is known for its adorable face and dexterous little paws. Because it has partially webbed hands and fingernails, it is the only otter species to catch its prey using its hands instead of its mouth. Asian otters communicate vocally with a repertoire of at least 12 calls! Otters are related to weasels, skunks and ferrets, and like them, they have a very distinctive smell. Each otter's scent is as individual as a fingerprint! Singleton Moms
A local nonprofit supports single parents with cancer and their families There are more than 17,000 single parents with cancer in Arizona who can tell you that it requires time, resources and energy to juggle treatments and day-to-day responsibilities. When you’re a widowed mother caring for four girls while battling stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, there are days when those resources feel drained. That’s when local nonprofit Singleton Moms comes to the rescue. “The phrase ‘single mom with cancer’ never entered my mind until I saw it for myself,” says founder and executive director Jody Farley-Berens. “When our long-time friend Michelle Singleton was diagnosed, it was devastating and completely unnerving as I was only 27 and a mother myself. Although I was not a single mom, I couldn’t imagine facing mortality at such a young age while continuing to be a positive force in your children’s lives.” Singleton Moms is dedicated to nurturing single moms and dads battling cancer and their minor children by meeting practical day-to-day needs of the entire family while providing hope for tomorrow. Its programs, offered in Maricopa and parts of Pinal counties, have developed specifically from experience in the types of support its families request most. All support services are at no charge to Singleton Moms families. About 70 percent of Singleton Moms’ parents are in stage four of their cancer diagnosis and an average of 36 years old. The group’s Care Coordination Program offers parents meals, toiletries and monthly household cleanings. It also hosts family outings to bowling alleys and baseball games as well as Singleton Kids social events
Every month, more than 550 servings (180 meals) are provided to families, relieving them of the need to plan and shop for a few healthy meals a month. Singleton Moms has partnered with Harvest for Humanity to introduce fruits and vegetables to parents. Gatherings called Dream Dinners are where volunteers meet twice a month to pack and distribute meals to families around the Valley. “It is wonderful to see how many people want to help,” says Farley-Berens. “I get emotional when I see our community in action to truly make a difference in these families’ lives.” Additional programs offered by Singleton Moms include: · Bare Necessities Craft Day, a monthly gathering where parents can collect items from the Singleton Moms’ storeroom of bare necessities while their kids make a fun craft, have a snack or partake in a big surprise such as the delivery of snow or a water slide. · Singleton Pockets, a program that allocates a stipend per month to be applied directly toward a household bill. · Singleton Phonebook is a resource of community professionals and businesses that are willing to provide services on an as-needed, pro bono basis. “Singleton Moms has been a blessing to me and my son in so many ways,” says Connie G., who had stage three colon cancer when she found Singleton Moms. “Had Singleton Moms not made us part of their family, I would not have had anywhere to turn for the assistance they provide.”

Bare necessities mean fun and games, too. Tiffany M., who has been battling cancer since 2004 and been out of work since 2011, says Singleton Moms’ family outings are just as important as paying the next bill. “Singleton Moms has provided not only material necessities but also memories and friendships that will last a lifetime,” she says.
For Desiree L., Singleton Moms was the only organization that responded to her requests for assistance. “Singleton Moms provided my five children with a Christmas I could have only dreamed of during the most difficult time in our life,” she says. “The meals provided helped our food stamps stretch to last the whole month and bare necessities, like toilet paper and paper towels, shampoo and toothpaste, helped us stretch every penny, preventing us from getting evicted. Singleton Moms helped me move when I was too weak to do it on my own and even helped with landscaping so I would get my deposit on my home back.”

Decoding Dysgraphia, a Lesser-Known Learning Disability Many people are familiar with or have at least heard of dyslexia, a condition that can affect a person's ability to read and comprehend the written word. Few may be as knowledgeable about dysgraphia, another learning disability that can affect language skills. Dysgraphia is a deficiency in the ability to write. While dysgraphia is mostly associated with impaired handwriting, it also can involve an inability to store and process written words and then elicit the proper finger sequences and muscle movement to actually write words down on paper. The word "dysgraphia" comes from the Greek words "dys," meaning "impaired," and "graphia," meaning "writing by hand." The Learning Disabilities Association of America says a person with dysgraphia may have problems with inconsistent spacing, poor spatial planning on paper, poor spelling, and difficulty writing, as well as thinking and writing at the same time. Experts aren't sure what causes dysgraphia. There might be a delay in the retrieval of information from short- or longterm memory and organizational abilities before beginning to write. A genetic component also may come into play. This specific learning disorder may appear separately or occur in conjunction with dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Whether or not dysgraphia is accompanied by other learning disabilities may determine the types of presentation.
Dyslexic: Those with dyslexic dysgraphia produce illegible, spontaneously written work. They may be able to copy work well, but not write legibly on their own.
Motor: A person with motor dysgraphia has poor fine motor skills, poor dexterity and poor muscle tone. Letter formation may be fine in short writing samples, but that formation deteriorates when asked to write lengthier assignments. Motor dysgraphia can cause arthritis-like tensing of the hand. This type of dysgraphia typically stems from problems with fine motor skills.
Spatial: An individual with spatial dysgraphia cannot
understand space well. Written work may be improperly spaced and illegible. Drawing abilities also may be compromised. Certain indications of dysgraphia may become evident when a child begins to learn how to read and write. This is when the condition may first be noticed, but it could be mistaken 26 October 2016 | azhealthandliving.com
for another issue unless educators and doctors are knowledgeable about dysgraphia. Some signs to look out for include: · Illegible printing and cursive writing · Unfinished words or letters · Omitted words in writing assignments · Inconsistent spacing between words and letters · Inconsistencies in writing style, including mixtures of print and cursive letters, upper and lowercase words, and irregular shapes or slants of letters · Difficulty visualizing letter formation before writing; and · Strange wrist, body or paper positions Parents, therapists and educators must work together to accommodate the needs of a student with dysgraphia. Reducing copying aspects of work, allowing recorders or note takers and having students take oral exams can help. An increase in the use of tablets and laptops in the classroom also may assist those with dysgraphia, as such assignments have reduced reliance on written work.
Breast Self-Exam Guidelines By MS
In addition to scheduling clinical screenings, women should routinely examine and massage their breasts to detect any abnormalities. These breast self-exams can be an important part of early breast cancer detection. Although many women are aware that they should become familiar with their bodies, many are unsure about just how frequently they should conduct breast examinations. Experts at Johns Hopkins Medical center advise adult women of all ages to perform self-examinations at least once a month. Begin by looking at the breasts in a mirror. Note the size and appearance of the breasts, and pay attention to any changes that are normal parts of hormonal changes associated with menstruation. Breasts should be evenly shaped without distortion or swelling. Changes that should cause concern include dimpling, puckering or bulging of the skin. Inverted nipples or nipples that have changed position, as well as any rash or redness, should be noted. In addition, the same examination should be done with arms raised over the head. The breasts should be felt while both lying down and standing up. Use the right hand to manipulate the left breast and vice versa. Use a firm touch with the first few fingers of the hand. Cover the entire breast in circular motions. The pattern taken doesn't matter so long as it covers the entire breast. All tissue, from the front to the back of the breast, should be felt. It is important not to panic if something is detected. Not every lump is breast cancer. And bumps may actually be normal parts of the breast, as certain areas can feel different from others. But bring any concerns to the attention of your doctor. azhealthandliving.com | October 2016

Physical Therapy for Pain Management Physical therapists have always known that movement and exercise are secret—not to mention safe and effective —weapons for treating chronic pain. And anyone who’s sought treatment from a rehabilitation therapist knows just how powerful these health care professionals are when it comes to alleviating—and, in many cases, preventing—pain. Now, it seems the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) agree with that sentiment—and they’ve published new recommendations to back it up. Earlier this year, the CDC released new federal guidelines on the use of opioids like Vicodin, Percocet, OxyContin and morphine, among others. The guidelines—which are geared toward doctors—take direct aim at the widespread oversubscription of these highly addictive painkillers, which often come with a slew of risks ranging from depression to overdose and withdrawal symptoms. Just to give you an idea of how real this issue is, U.S. doctors wrote nearly 200 million prescriptions for opioid painkillers in 2014 alone, and deaths linked to the drugs reached approximately 19,000 in that same year—a record high. In light of the nearly fourfold increase in opioid prescriptions in less than two decades, the CDC has ushered in more stringent prescribing guidelines and has provided recommendations for alternative routes of care. Under the new guidelines, the CDC urges health care providers to consider less-risky pain treatment options, including “nonpharmacological therapies such as exercise and cognitive behavioral therapy.” Many other health care stakeholders—from state and national government officials to advocacy groups—have joined in the crusade to stop the opioid abuse epidemic from spreading. One organization, the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), recently launched its #ChoosePT campaign to educate consumers about alternative methods of pain management. In fact, physical therapy is one of the first recommendations listed in the CDC guidelines. That’s because physical therapists: 28 October 2016 | azhealthandliving.com
Address the underlying cause of the pain Rather than simply masking the painful symptoms, physical therapy addresses the underlying causes of the pain. This means patients have a better chance of overcoming the pain rather than enduring it long-term while merely managing the symptoms. This cannot be said for opioid treatment of chronic pain.
Improve physical function We all know the benefits of moving regularly, and while it’s often the last thing you want to do when you are in pain, it actually can counteract the pain—when done under the careful guidance of a physical therapist. Regular movement helps manage chronic pain by strengthening muscles, increasing endurance and flexibility, and improving stability in the joints.
Increase patient's body awareness When a patient checks in regularly with a physical therapist, the patient has the opportunity to assess their pain level—and the associated functional progression or regression—more accurately and thoughtfully, which in turn increases the patient’s self-awareness. In other words, the patient becomes more in tune with his or her own body by observing it through a different lens. Through physical therapy, many patients learn what triggers or

How to Delve Into Your Family History Genealogy websites that help people trace their family histories love to focus on fortunate souls descended from royalty, or related in some distant and indirect way to George Washington. Yet genealogical research is just as likely to turn up horse thieves, drifters and scandals of every sort. You’re going to find stuff you don’t want to know. But who knows, those might be your most fascinating finds. Genealogy is experiencing a resurgence of popularity with such TV shows as Who Do You Think You Are and Finding Your Roots, but it’s never really been out of fashion. The thing is, once the genealogical story is learned, it simply can’t be unlearned. Here are a few suggestions for those who want to delve into their family histories:
Talk to relatives The best place to start is with what you already know. You’re probably aware of at least some of your family’s history, especially as it pertains to your mother and father. An excellent way to begin adding to that is to speak to your parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles who can fill in some of the blanks.
Check census records Every 10 years since 1790 the census has taken a snapshot of who’s living in the United States. Valuable information can be found in census records, and you might even discover relatives you never heard about.

DNA testing People often think they know their ethnic lineage, but discover surprises when they have a DNA test. My DNA test revealed that I am descended not only from people who hailed from England and Scotland, but also the Iberian Peninsula. It also probably doesn’t hurt if you are a nerd about these things like me. I found an ancestor who was involved in the Oklahoma Land Rush, so I researched that and found newspaper articles about the land rush. I think it’s important to put your family story in the historical context, especially if you plan to write a memoir.

Q. Why shouldn’t I buy my hearing Q. What new treatments are available Q. Why should I see a doctor for aids from a big box store? spider veins? for spinal stenosis? A. Hearing aids are intricate little computers that take skilled programming in order to appropriately amplify an individual’s hearing loss. Hearing aids are not a quick-fit solution to hearing loss. Programming performed by a doctorate level audiologist is critical if you want to hear your best. In most cases, it takes many follow-ups along with reallife test trials to ensure the hearing aids perform their best. Hearing aids also require routine cleanings and check-ups to prolong the life of the devices.

or blue veins visible near the surface of your skin on your face or legs; their twisting, "multilegged" appearance is the origin of their name. Spider veins are typically a progressive condition that worsens over time. If they are not treated, your spider veins are likely to grow and cause more noticeable symptoms as you age. Untreated spider veins can sometimes lead to rashes or skin ulcers and soft tissue infections in the lower extremities. While varicose veins appear primarily on the legs, spider veins can also appear on the face, causing cosmetic concerns about their visibility. Spider veins can sometimes be an indication of other medical conditions or venous disease. Q. What are my risks for developing breast cancer?
Q. How do I choose the best pair of glasses?
A. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Breast cancer is most common among women. It is the second leading cause of death among women, but is the most common cause of death among women worldwide. In the U.S., over 220 thousand women annually will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 40 thousand will die of the disease. Although rare amongst men, 2150 men will be diagnosed and 410 will die each year.
A. This is somewhat of a loaded question.
There has been a gradual reduction in female cancer rates in women aged 50 and older. Perhaps secondary to a decline in prescribing hormone replacement therapy after menopause. Death rates have also seen a decline since 1990 due to better screening, early detection, increased awareness and improvements in treatment options. Less than 1 percent of all breast cancer cases develop in men, approximately 1 in a thousand. Breast cancer in men usually will be detected at a later stage and carry a higher mortality rate. The cancer will usually present as a hard lump underneath the nipple and areola. Risk factors can be radiation exposure, high levels of the estrogen hormone, or a family history of breast cancer, especially if related to the BRCA2 gene. Breast cancer can exhibit the same symptoms among men and women, including a lump. Anyone who detects anything unusual about their breasts, male or female, should contact their physician immediately. Early detection of breast cancer increases treatment options and often reduces the risk of dying from breast cancer. – Dr. Serrano Precision Surgery, Inc. 602.547.3300
Many choices need to be considered when getting a new pair of glasses. The first thing is to ask yourself “What do you want your eyewear for?” The answer could be work, reading, driving or playing sports. Depending on the answer is how you would go about choosing a frame or even multiple frames. Most individuals could benefit from more than one pair of glasses. A good comparison is shoes. Most people have multiple pairs of shoes because they participate in many different activities. The same shoes you were to a wedding usually would not work so well on the basketball court. The same principle applies to eyewear. If you spend a majority of the day on the computer, but also need glasses to see to drive to and from work then a pair of occupational glasses to use at the computer, as well as, a distance pair may make the eyes feel and function better. Another example is those that spend a large amount of time outdoors or a large amount of time driving may benefit from a pair of prescription sunglasses. Each individual has individual needs that need to be addressed when choosing a pair of glasses. With the recommendations from your eye doctor and with help from a good optician you can know which glasses are right for you.

Q. Could my child be suffering from sleep-disordered breathing instead of ADHD? A. If your child sleeps in an abnormal
position (with his head off the bed or propped up on pillows), snores, sweats heavily during sleep, is difficult to wake up, has headaches, is irritable, falls asleep or daydreams in school, wets the bed, or has been diagnosed with attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder, he could suffer from sleep-disordered breathing. In children, sometimes the problem results from swollen tonsils and/or adenoids that block the airway. It can also be caused by dental problems because malocclusion (misalignment) of the teeth is believed to affect the positioning of the airway. Even swollen nasal passages could cause your child’s problem breathing during sleep. In these cases, it is a good idea to talk to your child’s pediatrician, his dentist and an ear, nose and throat specialist. If your child is sleeping poorly and it isn’t due to a sleep-disordered breathing problem, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends a relaxing setting at bedtime —low lights and quiet. Don’t substitute watching television or videos for personal interaction with your child before bedtime. When our children have trouble sleeping, it affects their lives, their health and our relationships with them. Be on the lookout for the signs—crabbiness, tiredness, headaches and the rest—as well as any possibility of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. While this could be a sleep-disordered breathing problem (or simply a problem sleeping) that deserves the attention of your child’s pediatrician, dentist and ENT, it also deserves yours. –Dr. Croft Vistancia Orthodontics 623.566.0800 azhealthandliving.com | October 2016

Q. Are all the recommended vaccinations really necessary for my child? A. Each year, Arizona residents face
outbreaks of preventable illnesses including influenza (flu), measles, whooping cough, hepatitis, varicella (chickenpox), pneumonia, and human papilloma virus (HPV). Vaccines not only provide protection for your child, but also protect our community by keeping infections out. People who work regularly with kids should also get vaccinated. Different vaccines are needed at different ages: •Newborns through six years of age: pneumonia; hepatitis A and B; chickenpox; haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib); diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTaP); polio; rotavirus; measles; mumps; rubella; and flu. •Seven through 18 years of age: three vaccines at age 11-12 are recommended, including HPV, tetanus and pertussis (Tdap), and meningococcal (MCV). Almost everyone who is at least six months of age and older should get a flu shot annually. Always talk to your healthcare provider about vaccinations. Q. What is hand rejuvenation surgery?
Q. How does glycation affect health and what can be done to address A. If you’ve noticed that your hands are this problem?
looking older than you feel, hand rejuvenation surgery is a very rewarding and minimally invasive procedure to consider. Signs that you may see are more veins and the definition of them. You may see that the tendons in your hands are very noticeable and defined as well. Hand rejuvenation surgery consists of taking a small amount of your body fat, using liposuction (without the use of general anesthesia), and transferring it to the areas of the hands where volume has diminished. Consequently, putting volume back in those areas quickly reduces the ropey veins and tendons. And, the best part of using your own subcutaneous (just beneath your skin) fat is that it is very safe. Also, there are stem cells within your fat cells that can stimulate a very rejuvenating effect to thin skin that lasts longer than dermal fillers. If you are considering hand rejuvenation surgery, please note it should be done by a plastic surgeon that is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This specialty is important because this type of surgeon is an expert on the hand’s anatomy as well as the liposuction portion of the surgery. It is important to look for these credentials from any physician from whom you are seeking hand rejuvenation surgery. Contact the office for a free consultation to learn more.

A. Glycation is a process where excess sugar (glucose) in our bodies can create damage to our cells. Glycation can be particularly damaging to people who suffer diabetes and pre-diabetes because of their sustained high blood pressure, but all people experience glycation. The process can be sped up and amplified by consuming too much sugar and other carbohydrates. In the bloodstream, excess glucose reacts with macromolecules creating advanced glycation end products (AGEs). AGEs disrupt the normal function of human tissues. Cellular damage caused by glycation can contribute to a host of health issues such as diabetes, inflammation, nerve and organ damage, and other diseases like chronic renal failure, cardiovascular disease, and neurological disorders. Taking all of the above into consideration, it is not surprising that glycation heavily contributes to the process of aging, mostly visible at the skin level. Some level of glycation is unavoidable but there are things that we can do to minimize AGEs and, consequently, minimize the damage. In addition to watching your carbohydrate consumption (which includes sugar) taking a glycation defense product can help your body fight against its harmful effects and improve cellular health. Scientific research has shown that Mineral BioSciences® Ioniplex™ reduces the formation of damaging AGEs, enhances energy production within muscle cells, and helps support healthy blood sugar levels. Ioniplex is available in liquid Totála® and softgel Glyde D® forms. – Dr. Bojanowsku Mineral BioSciences®

The surgeon general recently sent all providers a letter about the importance of following guidelines. Since 1999, opioid overdose deaths have quadrupled. Yes, addiction is a problem and patients must be monitored, but more commonly are side effects. The side effects of opioids may include drowsiness, fatigue, disturbance in quality sleep, “Brain fog”, hyperalgesic state, increased inflammation, sexual dysfunction, loss of libido, decreased testosterone, decreased white and gray matter in the brain, memory loss, slurred speech, depression, anxiety, increased risk of suicide, respiratory depression, slowed heart rate and low falling blood pressure, heart attack, osteoporosis, compression fractures, loss of teeth, nausea, vomiting, constipation and weakened immune system. It’s quite scary but necessary for patients to review these risks. Some pain medications are less likely to result in these risks and should be considered if medications are necessary.
So what are the benefits? Reduced pain leads to increase function. This prevents the sequalae of immobility, which are numerous (blood clots, weight gain, cardiovascular issues and ulcers). You are now probably wondering, what are my alternatives? This is the big question. The alternatives are extensive and will depend on the pain generator. In my practice, we emphasize treating the source of the pain. Sometimes it is arthritis, disc problems, nerve, poor nutrition or lack of “chi” in the body. The treatment plan will depend on the pain generator and/or underlying problem.

Q. Why should I advertise my business? A. No matter how wonderful your service or product is, if you don't advertise, nobody will know. The goal of advertising should be to cost effectively reach the largest audience possible to attract new patients/ customers. If done correctly, advertising can be a wonderful investment; if done poorly, advertising can become financially draining. Here are four tips to start a successful advertising plan:
Q. How do acidic foods affect your health? A. According to the “Journal of Longevity,” many health problems are caused by over acidity or a lack of pH balance in the body. Dr. Theodore A. Baroody, author of "Alkalize or Die" agrees, saying, "The countless names of illnesses do not really matter. What does really matter is that they all come from the same root cause: too much acid tissue waste in the body.” Processed foods, white breads, sugar and red meats are all acidic and, when we consume too much of them, our body's pH balance is upset. The Standard American Diet (SAD) is highly acidic (75 to 90 percent). A better balance would be to try to limit acidic foods to 25 percent.
1. Go after your target audience; in the right places! No product or service will appeal to everyone. Do research to understand who your audience is and determine what they read, watch and listen to. Find your market and be everything you can be to Studies also have shown that too much acid that audience. 2. Highlight your competitive advantage; what makes you unique? Find your competitive edge. Too many ads highlight all the features and services and fail to sell their specific benefits. Unless you highlight these benefits, how can you deliver value to potential patients/customers? 3. Establish your image. You have a car full of hungry kids and there are only two places to stop for lunch; you recognize the McDonald’s arches but you have never heard of the other place. Where will you stop? Image counts; don’t lose a chance to make an impression.
in the body can wreck your enzyme balance. Without the necessary digestive enzymes, the body is unable to properly digest all the nutrients it needs. Inadequate digestion puts stress on the digestive system making it harder to distribute essential vitamins and minerals throughout the body. When given the enzymes it needs, the body is more likely to reach and maintain a state of optimal health. Best Organic Wheatgrass powder with the roots and leaves contains more than 100 enzymes, 13 vitamins, 10 minerals, 17 kinds of amino acids, fiber, and chlorophyll. Two of the most important enzymes are SOD and P4D1. Both are anti-aging agents.
4. You have to spend money to make money. Advertising is not the place to cut corners. Doing so affects the bottom line. Successful advertising may cost some money, but that is because it works.

Q. Now that fall is here and the holidays are around the corner, are there ways to keep isolated seniors from feeling depressed during this time of year? A. It is important to be sure someone who
exhibits signs of depression does not have a physical reason. If a person has chronic pain or discomfort, they may have a chronic case of the blues as well. Addressing these concerns is a good place to start. Reviewing current medications is also a good idea as depression is a side effect of some medications. Proper nutrition is also key to a positive outlook. Eating well promotes feelings of well-being and ensures optimal health. Consider a home delivery program if preparing nutritious, healthy meals at home is an issue. An in-home caregiver can also help with shopping, preparing meals at home and provide transportation for outings. Encourage the pursuit of hobbies. Whether revisiting an old favorite pastime or discovering something new, finding enjoyable ways to pass the time will help prevent the depression that can come from boredom and isolation. There are numerous clubs and activities available at local senior centers and churches. It is also a great way to connect with others and form new friendships. Finally, it may be beneficial to seek some form of counseling, which may be helpful in keeping depression at bay. Sun Cities CareGivers offers companion services for seniors who need a little support at home. Sometimes it helps just knowing someone will be there when needed.

Q. How does Wildlife World prepare Q. I know about Medicare’s Open when adding a new species of animals Enrollment Period but why should I review my plan every year? to the park? A. Adding new species to the park is no A. The simple answer is because “things” change. easy feat. A significant amount of research, Here are just a few examples of what those planning, and preparation goes into deciding changes might be: whether a species is right for our zoo. •Lifestyle Once Wildlife World elects to add a new species, we reach out to other zoos that have experience with the specific animal; we inquire into that zoo’s success with the species, tips in carrying for the animal, and recommendations for habitat preparation. We then set out on our own extensive research campaign in order to make our newly developed exhibit as similar to the species’ natural habitat as possible. Once we determine that species can thrive in our Arizona climate and new home at Wildlife World, we take further measures in insuring the habitat meets the animal’s specific needs. We evaluate if the animal needs to be inside, outside, or both; if we need to add misters or a cooled house. We research the animal’s diet then determine if Wildlife World has the resources necessary to provide the animal with that diet. Finally, once we conclude we have the necessary resources, adequate climate conditions, and sufficient knowledge needed to welcome that new species to our zoo, we then begin evaluating our staff to insure our handlers have the experience required to care for that particular animal.

Even subtle changes to any of the above can greatly affect the performance of your health plan. Residing in Arizona provides many health plan options to those enrolled in Medicare. The majority of Medicare beneficiaries have chosen medical coverage in addition to “traditional” Medicare. One of those options is a Medicare Advantage plan and, although they all offer very comprehensive protection, they can also vary greatly from plan to plan and year to year. If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan you receive an “Annual Notice of Change” each October explaining any and/or all changes made to your benefits for the coming year. The Open Enrollment Period allows those with Medicare the opportunity to explore and learn about all options available to them for the coming year. Unlike other times throughout the year, this 7-week period of October 15 to December 7 allows changes without restrictions. It’s important to learn and understand the differences and options available before a well informed decision should be made. I recommend making an appointment with a trusted professional who specializes in serving the Medicare community to provide this important information.
At Wildlife World Zoo, we love welcoming new animals, and are always up for the challenge in preparing for new species to move in.

BE PRESENT
PARENTING By Elaine Fogel Schneider, Ph.D., therapist and author of 7 Strategies for Raising Calm, Inspired & Successful Children, (www.askdrelaine.com)
Four Tips to Help Your Child Disconnect From the Electronic World Ever since Nintendo made the Pokémon Go video game app available, young people have been exploring their communities with their eyes firmly fixed on their smartphones rather than on the wonders of the world. If endless hours spent capturing imaginary creatures seems like an electronic addiction, it very well may be, but that’s nothing new. Many children have been plugged into electronic devices for a long time now, rarely looking up as they help virtual animals save the day, keep race cars on track and watch endless loops of videos on YouTube. They are so attached to technology at such an early age and it’s changing their brain circuitry. They begin to lose the back and forth communication with their parents, and/or siblings, and the whole notion of empathy. For really young children, these devices have become the babysitter. I fully understand that parents need a break (as do grandparents), but there have to be limits. Here are four tips for parents who worry about how they can control their child’s electronic pastime.
Set rules. Limit the amount of time your child can spend on an electronic device and be consistent in enforcing those rules. This way your child knows that when you say he or she only has two minutes left, then there really is only two minutes left, not three or four hours.
Use a timer. A timer does not “lie” and can take the blame away from you when you’re limiting your child’s time on the device. Use the timer that measures down the time your child is spending on the tablet, smartphone, and/or technological game, so that your child knows the end for using that device is approaching, and it won’t be a surprise when time is up. You can even have your child select a tone on the smartphone that he or she likes.
Be ready with another activity. Plan an alternative way of engaging your child so when the device is turned off, some other interest can be provided and take his or her mind off the electronic device. Describe what you’re going to do so the child’s interest is piqued into doing something else that he or she enjoys.
Use these tips in your home at first. As with everything,
at first there’s a learning curve, so there may be tantrums, tears, meltdowns and even depression. In time, though, the 44 October 2016

I can remember hearing my own mother’s words, ‘I’m doing this for your own good!’ And that’s really true.
How to Spur Kids' Interest in the Arts By MS
Art can enrich the lives of people young and old, male and female. The arts can introduce adults and children to different cultures and traditions, while also helping them to develop more fully as human beings. Parents can do a lot to make art a bigger part of their kids' lives. The following are some simple ways parents can bring more art into their kids' lives, courtesy of Americans for the Arts.
Join in the fun. Parents can make art more fun for kids by
playing music around the house, singing and dancing alongside their youngsters. In addition, read a book to or with your children and join in when they pursue other artistic endeavors, such as drawing or painting.
Find local events. Many school districts have slashed their
arts budgets in recent years, but parents can still find local arts events for kids in their communities. Peruse the local newspaper and other community-based periodicals for cultural events for kids. Support local theater groups by attending performances with your children and explaining to them that the performers live in the community just like they do.
Pitch in with local arts organizations. Local arts
organizations typically rely on donations and volunteers to support their programs. Parents who want to instill a love of the arts in their children can help local organizations' fundraising efforts and even volunteer their time if the opportunity presents itself. If possible, take kids along when volunteering so they can get some firsthand experience with the arts.
Encourage kids' artistic pursuits. Some kids may decide to pursue artistic endeavors on their own, and parents can encourage such pursuits. Celebrate kids' participation in artsbased activities in school and in the community, recognizing their hard work in the same way you would acknowledge their successes in the classroom and in sports. azhealthandliving.com |October 2016

Pros & Cons to Detox Cleanse Diets Detox diet adherents tout the benefits of cleansing their bodies. The detox craze can be confusing, and misinformation regarding the best way to proceed with a cleanse only illustrates the emphasis men and women considering detox diets must place on learning as much about them as possible. Detoxing involves changing one's diet for a predetermined period of time for the purpose of ridding the body of unhealthy, potentially toxic substances. While there may be some immediate weight loss associated with detoxing, losing weight is not the main purpose of detoxing. Men and women have various detox options to choose from, including some that target specific areas of the body or others that aim to improve overall health. Detox diets tend to be restrictive diets, which may not make them practical for everyone - particularly those who may have health ailments or specific dietary needs. Consult with a physician before beginning a detox diet to ensure it will not interfere with any treatments. In addition, it can help to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of detox diets to determine if doing a cleanse is the right choice for you.
Cons

Eliminate poor eating habits: Cleanses may help you

to take better inventory of your eating habits and encourage you to make healthy choices in the process. Detox diets require that their adherents eliminate particular foods for a period of time, and in many instances, these off-limits foods are overly processed items that may not be the best food choices in the first place.
Increase vitality and energy levels: Detox diets can sometimes increase one's energy and stamina. This can translate into more motivation to exercise or be active.
New foods: A detox may require you to increase consumption of whole foods and participate in "clean eating." Eating cleanly is about selecting the healthiest options in each of the food groups. You may be exposed to new ingredients and discover healthy options you love.
Benefit the immune system: You may find that healthy
eating has positive effects on your immune system. This may make it easier to fend off illnesses or improve recovery time on those occasions when you get sick. 46 October 2016

Weight loss concerns: If your goal is to lose weight, do
not expect detox diets alone to produce permanent weight loss. Many people experience weight gain after they stop a detox, says the health resource Everyday Home Remedy. Weight loss is better achieved gradually and through consistent healthy eating and exercise than through a cleanse.
Potential to overextend detox diets: Some people extend a detox for longer than is recommended in an effort to experience greater gains. They may feel that two or three weeks of a cleanse may be doing more good than simply one week. This is not a good idea because you can deprive your body of the balance of foods it needs to thrive. Detox diets can be short-term dietary options that bring about renewed vigor and health. Speak with a doctor and nutritionist to determine if a cleanse is best for you.
Five Low-Calorie Snacks That Stray From the Norm By MS
Snacking may not seem like part of a healthy diet, but the right snacks can help men and women fight midday hunger without contributing to unwanted weight gain. The following low-calorie snacks won't compromise adults' efforts to maintain healthy weights, and they might prove useful as men and women look for that extra boost during the day.
Popcorn is low in calories and a good source of dietary fiber.
Popcorn also is high in polyphenols, which are antioxidants that have been linked to reductions in heart disease and certain cancers. Air-popped popcorn that is prepared without any oil is your best option, as a cup of such popcorn may only add up to about 30 calories. Avoid adding salt, butter, or purchasing premade popcorn that is heavy on both, as both ingredients can compromise the health benefits of popcorn.
Hummus: Made primarily from ground chickpeas, hummus
is a protein- and fiber-rich snack that has been linked to a host of health benefits, including a reduced risk for heart disease and certain types of cancers. Dip vegetables such as baby carrots into hummus, and you'll have a low-calorie snack that's also high in vitamin A and beta-carotene.
Pistachios: Many people might read the labels of pistachios
and be turned off by the fat content. But pistachios are low in saturated fat and high in protein, and a couple dozen pistachios may only amount to about 95 calories. Eat pistachios raw and do not add salt, which can negate their health benefits.
Grapes are great sources of vitamin K and are loaded with
antioxidants. Grapes are loaded with water, making them a filling snack that can help men and women avoid dehydration. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, one cup of grapes can provide as much as 5 percent of the recommended daily value of dietary fiber despite containing just over 100 calories. azhealthandliving.com | October 2016

FEEL GOOD & REJUVENATE
Skin & Beauty By Paolo Tramonti, owner and CEO of Bios Line, manufacturer of BioKap Nutricolor Delicato at-home hair dyes, (www.biokapusa.com)
How to Avoid Allergic Reactions When Coloring Your Hair Choosing a new hair color wouldn’t seem to be the kind of decision that comes with much peril. But anyone intent on going from blonde to brunette, or from gray haired to redhead could be in for a surprise. In fact, chemicals used in hair dyes can trigger allergic reactions, and skin exposed to the chemical paraphenylenediamine (PPD) may become swollen, red, blistered, dry and cracked. It’s a not so common reaction, but can happen. Mostly the reaction to chemicals in hair dye is mild, but on rare occasions, there can be a more serious situation. Two years ago, actress Pauley Perrette of the TV series “NCIS” broke out in a rash and experienced severe swelling because of the dye she routinely used to turn her blonde hair black. Reactions can vary from person to person, that’s why hair dyes come with a caution statement about allergic reactions, and consumers are instructed to do a “patch test” on a small area of the skin before using them. Consumers can further reduce the chances of having an allergic reaction if they ask these questions about dyes:
Is it PPD free? Even if you’ve used a hair dye with PPD in the past without any problems that doesn’t mean you can consider yourself worry free. An allergic reaction to PPD can develop at any stage of life. That’s why it’s best to avoid it.
Has it been nickel tested? Nickel is another ingredient that may create problems and, according to the Mayo Clinic, can cause an itchy skin rash. It’s impossible to avoid the presence of nickel completely because trace amounts are in water and in some natural ingredients. 48 October 2016 | azhealthandliving.com
An allergic reaction to PPD can develop at any stage of life. Is it free of ammonia, paraben and resorcinol? These common dye ingredients also can lead to various skin irritations and other allergic reactions. For example, besides the skin problems ammonia can cause, exposure to ammonia fumes also can irritate the eyes, throat and lungs. Most people don’t experience any allergic reaction when they color their hair. But there are people with particularly sensitive skin for whom it’s advisable to use products that are as natural and gentle as possible.

Generating Great Blog Ideas
A well-written and regularly updated blog is a great marketing tool for a variety of reasons. A blog drives people to your website, helps you build your personal or company brand, and allows you to develop a relationship with customers or readers. But let’s face it, the blog that you vowed to update every two or three weeks can seem like another mind-numbing chore as time passes and your enthusiasm wanes. What’s worse is that, pretty soon, you start running out of material. After all, you already covered everything obvious and worthwhile, right? What’s left to write about? Plenty, as it turns out. You just need to put yourself in a position to attract great ideas and snag them as they whiz by. Let me nudge you in a few directions that should help feed the blog beast that haunts your doorstep every couple of weeks or so. • Follow the daily news to see what’s creating a stir nationally, internationally or within your industry. For example, the recent debate over whether the mountain in Alaska should be called Denali or Mt. McKinley could be fodder for someone who blogs about mountain climbing, the outdoors or, perhaps, presidential history. • Check social media to see what topics have people the most excited. Twitter and Facebook track trending topics that generate a lot of buzz, and those could provide jumping off points for your next blog entry. • Steal from yourself. Revisit ideas from blogs past, but give them a fresh approach. Even newspapers and magazines will resurrect topics they previously wrote about, wagering that few readers will care or recall that the same subject was explored two or three years ago. You can do the same. And remember, there’s no need to wait until the last minute to start formulating ideas. Keep an ongoing list, adding to it whenever a topic pops into your head. Once you decide on a topic, here are a few tips for fleshing it out into a quality blog entry and for attracting the greatest number of readers:
Online searches are your friends. Background information about your topic is just a search phrase away using Google or another search engine. Look for real-life examples or recent news on your subject to add depth and reinforce your point of view. 50 October 2016 | azhealthandliving.com
Statistics, studies and surveys. Specific numbers and recent studies also bolster the points you want to make. You could, for instance, write that “there are a lot of libraries in the U.S.” But it’s less vague and more impressive to write: “The American Library Association estimates there are 119,729 libraries in the U.S.” While you can often track down surveys, studies and data with a general Google search, you also can zero in on specific websites. For example, if you are writing about a medical topic, the Centers for Disease Control provides numerous statistics about how many people suffer from various maladies. Integrate SEO keywords. People search the Internet using keywords or phrases they hope will uncover articles or websites with the information they want. The more you understand which keywords could bring the highest amount of traffic to you, the better, so research what might work best. You can integrate those keywords into a headline or the body of the blog entry. Keywords shouldn’t be too generic, though, or else your blog will be lost in a blizzard of other blogs, websites, and news articles that use the same words. Coming up with and carrying out great blog ideas on a regular basis certainly presents a challenge, but not an insurmountable one. And, with any luck, your worries soon could change from “What’s left to write about?” to “How will I ever find time to write about all these great ideas?”
Phases to Becoming a Paid Speaker
By Jane Atkinson, author of The Wealthy Speaker 2.0, www.speakerlauncher.com
TED talks, YouTube rants and Mr. Peanut, the mascot for Planters Peanuts, are all signs of just how highly valued the art of oratory is today. Yep, even Mr. Peanut can be seen in Planters ads giving TED-style presentations; people are spending top dollar to attend a well-presented speech with useful information from an inspired perspective, and the best speakers may be regarded fairly as today’s rock stars. The ability to command a fee is a sign that you’ve made it as a speaker. However, as with rock stars, it’s a long way to the top if you’re just starting. But if you have something to offer then you can reach that fee status, and there’s a reliable path to follow. Here are the three phases to becoming a paid speaker:
Ready. “Picking a lane” in your topic is the first step to becoming not only a paid speaker, but a wealthy one, too. Ask yourself the questions, “What topic do I want to be known for five years from now?” and “Will someone pay me for that information?” When looking to hire a speaker to deliver a keynote speech for a conference, who will be picked from a pool of experts – a jack of all trades or someone who hits the center of the bull’s-eye on a topic? When picking a lane, consider delving into topics including leadership, engagement, corporate culture or communication. This is the phase in which you’ll want to really develop your bona fides, including your material and establishing the goal of how you’d like to help your audience.
Aim. Here is the marketing phase that cannot be underappreciated. It includes aspects like your website and what you do to drive traffic there, which may include a well-written blog with relevant content, and media exposure. However, the most important way to market yourself is to do a truly excellent job with your actual speech. A good speech for a speaker is like a great pastry for a baker – a quality product speaks volumes itself. There is no better form of marketing than a great speech. Therefore, if you think your speech could use help, take care of it right away. No amount of marketing dollars, no fancy Facebook page, and no ultra-cool website can overcome a mediocre presentation. However, when you market yourself, you’ll want to include a number of materials, including your brand, promise statement, photos, a bio illustrating credibility, testimonials and more.
If you feel as though you have something to offer audiences via oral presentations, then you probably do. Fire. Now, you need to identify your target market and determine the best method to reach them. You need to roll out your product and continue to build momentum. Be ready to fire your message to your target market via a public relations campaign strategy. There are multiple ways of effectively getting good attention from the media, but don’t believe all attention is good attention. Carefully consider your press releases. The mistake most speakers make is sending out a press release that does not answer the question: “So what?” They don’t tie it to anything relevant into which the press can sink their teeth. Another way to “fire” is to identify your ideal customer, also called the The Attraction Method, as detailed in the book, “Attracting Perfect Customers: The Power of Strategic Synchronicity” by Stacy Hall and Jan Brogniez. If you feel as though you have something to offer audiences via oral presentations, then you probably do. These days, so much content can be had for free online, but that doesn’t take the place of a live experiential presentation. A presentation that is ‘epic’ will remain in your memory for years. The ability to present your content live, and make the presentation worthwhile and relevant, means you can earn a reliable stream of revenue based on what you’re good at. azhealthandliving.com |October 2016

Christina Applegate The longtime Hollywood star continues to wow fans
In 2008, well-known actress Christina Applegate received the news that no woman wants to hear: she was diagnosed with breast cancer. According to multiple media reports, Applegate let her fans know that she had inherited the BRCA1 mutation, which is believed to have caused her cancer. Her mother, fellow actress Nancy Priddy, is also a breast cancer survivor. Fortunately, Applegate caught the cancer in its early stages. She underwent a double mastectomy and was later declared cancer free. Recently, the actress told Britain’s Hello! magazine how she now uses her experience to help others. “I just try to live as stress-free as I can because nothing is that important to put your body through stress,” she told Hello! “There really isn’t anything important. Are you breathing? Then you’re good. But I’m the go-to girl now for anyone who has a friend that’s diagnosed [with breast cancer] and I will usually take them through their full journey.” “I’ll sit on the phone for hours and hours and that’s kind of my pay it forward,” she continued to tell Hello! “I try to build a sisterhood. I know women now who are doing that for their friends and so on and so forth. It’s about building this community. It’s a beautiful community because no one really understands what you’re going through.” Despite her health setback with cancer, Applegate’s career has only skyrocketed since her role as Kelly Bundy on “Married With Children,” which ended nearly 20 years ago. Since then, Applegate has established a name for herself in film, television and on Broadway—she has won multiple awards, including an Emmy, and is a Tony and Golden Globe Award nominee. 52 October 2016 | azhealthandliving.com
Her most recent film, “Bad Moms,” grossed more than $100 million dollars nationally, according to box office numbers. In the film she played Gwendolyn, the film’s “bad guy,” a departure from her usual character choices. Applegate recently told the L.A. Times about the role: “I’m a mom. We’re living in this society that puts so much pressure on us to be perfect and the whole premise of the movie is if one day you just go ‘I can’t be perfect.’ It’s about the judgment of moms on other moms. I loved being able to play this incredibly evil woman who represents a lot things you see out there in the world from these very type-A moms who have a lot of judgment.” In addition to a thriving acting career, Applegate is a mom to a 5-year-old daughter, an animal activist, and is busy raising awareness about a health issue she personally deals with—insomnia. “Applegate recently announced her participation in the educational awareness program, Why So Awake [www.whysoawake.com], to help consumers learn more about how the sleep and wake systems play a role in insomnia,” according to a recent article on ABC News. "It's something a lot of people don't talk about," Applegate told PEOPLE magazine. "Millions and millions of people aren't sleeping… It affects your spiritual self, emotional self and physical self." In addition, while oftentimes she is private about her personal life, due to the nature of the movie “Bad Moms,” Applegate has been more open lately about her own motherhood experience. "It's such a gift to be a parent that we feel like we can never complain. But sometimes you just need to go away for two minutes. It's rough and it's awesome and it's ok to say that it's rough. We're all doing the best we can. No one wants to (screw) up as a parent," she told AOL.com. For fans who want to keep up with Applegate’s social media escapades, her official Twitter account is @1capplegate.

STAY HEALTHY
aging well By Alexander Joyce, president and CEO of ReJoyce Financial LLC, www.ReJoyceFinancial.com
Social Security No One Size Fits All After roughly four decades of nonstop work, it certainly can be enticing. You can begin drawing Social Security as early as age 62; finally getting back those dollars, you’ve been paying into the system, possibly since you were a teenager handling cashier duties for a fast-food restaurant. But taking Social Security a few years shy of traditional retirement age comes with a caveat. Your monthly check will be reduced, so you’ll draw as much as 30 percent less than you would if you waited until your full retirement age, which is 66 to 67 for most people these days. At the other end of the equation, if you put off filing for Social Security until you’re 70, you can increase the amount of those checks. So what’s a potential retiree to do? Unfortunately, there’s no perfect answer that applies to everyone. It’s not always an easy decision and there’s no exact science to follow. There are a few things to keep in mind as you approach 62 and begin mulling your options:
Your neighbor’s decision isn’t your decision. It might be interesting to hear what other people have done, but that doesn’t mean you should follow suit. Their financial situation may be very different from yours. The right answer for them could be the absolutely wrong answer for you.
Working in retirement makes a difference. Many people like to continue working, at least part-time, even after they begin drawing Social Security. But that can have ramifications. If you’ve reached full retirement age, no problem. Make as much money as you like. But if you take Social Security early, there’s a $15,720 annual limit on how much you can earn. For every $2 over that, you’ll lose $1 of Social Security.
Maybe you need the money now. It could be that you
worked the numbers and decided to wait until your full retirement age. But then fate intervened. You lost your job or health problems keep you from working. There certainly are very good reasons why some people begin drawing their Social Security at 62. 60 October 2016
| azhealthandliving.com
It might be interesting to hear what other people have done, but that doesn’t mean you should follow suit. Maybe you don’t need the money – just yet. If your finances are in good order, your savings robust and your employment stable, putting off Social Security until you’re 70 could make sense because you would be able to optimize the amount of those monthly checks. For example, if your full retirement age is 66, you would be able to receive 132 percent of your monthly benefit if you delayed filing for four years, according to the Social Security Administration website. Ultimately, the decision is yours, but it’s important to make that decision knowing all the implications. While there’s no right answer that applies to everyone, there could be at least a best answer that applies to you.
Moving is the best medicine. Keeping active and losing weight are just two of the ways that you can fight osteoarthritis pain. In fact, for every pound you lose, that’s four pounds less pressure on each knee. For information on managing pain, go to fightarthritispain.org.
STAY HEALTHY
aging well By Marco Kozlowski, author of the eBooks WTF Wealth: The Formula and 10 Myths of Investing in U.S. Real Estate, www.marcokozlowski.com
Real Estate Investing The Path to a Stable Retirement As much as American workers look forward to retirement, many of them also worry that retirement is a luxury they can’t afford. In fact, about one-fourth express concerns about running out of cash in retirement, according to a survey by the Indexed Annuity Leadership Council. The problem is that too many people lock themselves into a few limited options for funding their retirement nest egg. Social Security provides a small amount of income, but after that people rely on what little savings they can muster after paying bills and taking care of other daily living expenses. When they realize their savings are coming up short, they consider alternative retirement plans, such as delaying Social Security so monthly payments will be higher, working in retirement, or turning to investments such as real estate to provide a different path to security. Real estate comes with its own caveats. People think when you are talking about real estate that it’s going to be some get-rich-quick situation. It’s not. To be successful at it takes effort and education on how to do things correctly. Buying a home and buying investment property have completely different rules. Those willing to get educated and to put in the hard work will find that real estate can be the ticket to healthy retirement plan. Here are a few tips to help those interested avoid some common pitfalls:
Buy it right. Be on the lookout for the best deals. Ideally, you want to find properties that you can buy at a discount. If you really know what you are doing, you can get 20 percent or more off the actual property value. Don’t worry about the seller’s asking price. If you make an offer and it gets accepted, you paid too much.
Don’t fear negotiations. When it’s not something you do on a regular basis, negotiating can seem intimidating and uncomfortable. Some people just don’t like it, but good negotiations are critical and inevitable for success in life and real estate, so just have fun with it. Negotiations are nothing more than a conversation with another person, but 62 October 2016
| azhealthandliving.com
with a goal in mind. Remember that money is made on the buy. I’d rather get 100 rejected offers and one accepted at the right price. Rejection is free; a bad deal is costly.
Consider hiring a management firm. Owning and maintaining real estate can consume a lot of time. It’s best to get a management company to manage the properties and tenants for you so you can devote your time to other more important things – like making more offers to get more great deals in your portfolio.
Explore financing options. There are many ways to finance a real estate purchase. You don’t have to use your own capital and you don’t have to go through a bank. For example, you can seek out private money. You may pay more in interest, but there’s no limit on how many loans you can get as is the case with many banks. Real estate investing can be risky – especially if you don’t educate yourself before taking the plunge. The way to reduce all risk is through knowledge. Everything we learn helps use avoid some sort of risk. In that sense, real estate investing isn’t much different from anything else in life.
Four Key Factors That Can Improve Your Quality of Life as You Age
By Chris Orestis, author of Help on the Way and A Survival Guide to Aging and CEO of Life Care Funding, www.lifecarefunding.com
When it comes to aging, Americans harbor plenty of concerns. Going broke. Succumbing to Alzheimer’s disease. Spending the final lonely years in a nursing home. But there’s no need to think that gray hair and wrinkles automatically translate to a dreary existence. There are a number of things people can do right now that will increase the odds that their senior years will be healthy, productive and rewarding. A healthy diet and exercise are two of the better-known ingredients for improving the chances you’ll lead a long and fruitful life. Others include:
Attitude Life hands everyone challenges, but it’s how you deal with those challenges that makes the difference. Keeping a positive attitude is important. Do you approach each day with zeal or with dread? Are you active or sedentary? It’s critical to live life with a purpose because it will make you strive to be healthy of mind, body and in your attitude.
Adaptability People change as they age and so does the world around them. “You need to be prepared to manage a whole host of changes in a positive way. Your body changes. Your mind changes. There are changes in your career, in the community you live in and in the technology we all use every day. Those who do the best job of adapting are the ones most likely to thrive.
Relationships People who nurture relationships are more likely to live higher-quality lifestyles. As we age, relationships will change and it’s important to stay engaged, whether in person or from afar. We also need to build new relationships throughout our lives.
One of the keys to people who live long lives is that their life continued to have meaning.
Activities
Hobbies, volunteer work, learning new skills, or getting morenvolved with your family are all paths to an active and meaningful life.
Filling your time with activities – coaching a youth soccer team, learning guitar, traveling – can help give you a more meaningful and healthy life. One of the keys to people who live long lives is that their life continued to have meaning.
Aging shouldn’t be a one-way ticket to poor health, loneliness, boredom and a declining quality of life. The key to enjoying a long and fulfilling life is in your own hands. azhealthandliving.com |October 2016

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called friends, red lights called enemies, caution lights called family. You will have flats called jobs. But, if you have a spare called determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith and a driver named Jesus—you will make it to a place called success.” – Author Unknown
