"I did my research online for the practices in Arizona that offer varicose vein removal. I knew I wanted the EVLT treatment and wanted the procedure done by a Physician, not a cosmetic place. I narrowed it down to three Physicians and chose Dr. Sharma for his experience. I could not be more pleased with my experience at Arizona Vein & Laser Institute. Dr. Sharma is a wonderful physician. As he is performing the procedure, he explains what he is doing and is so concerned about making you feel comfortable. As for his staff, I cannot say enough good words. One thing I have learned in my lifetime is that your employees are only as good as you are. Dr. Sharma, you have a wonderful staff which says alot about you as an employer. I spent many office visits with them and every time they were pleasant, caring and professional. I was impressed by the way they worked as a team with Dr. Sharma. Thank you so much!" Joy A.

"I had called your office on a Monday morning to see if I could be fit in for an appointment as soon as possible because of a complication I had over the weekend. Being a new patient and never being seen at your office before it didn't matter because the woman who answered was not only kind, friendly and sypmathetic of my situation, but she was able to fit me in that very same afternoon. I have to say how incredibly impressed I was with the entire staff at this office but even more so with Dr. Sharma and Dr. Hecht. Their bedside manners are second to none. Thank you!" Scott Schrimp

NORTH PHOENIX Charles I. Hecht M.D., FACS Dr. Hecht received his M.D. degree from State University of New York Upstate Medical University. He did his residency in General Surgery at Ohio State University Hospital. He has performed major surgeries at the area hospitals for over 25 years before joining Arizona Vein & Laser Institute to dedicate to the treatment of venous disease.

Lift, Tighten and Tone Your Skin this Summer! We can all agree sagging skin is a sure sign of aging, especially when it’s concentrated around the jaw line, neck and eyes. Now there is a new generation skin-tightening device leading the way in the fight against sagging jowls, turkey necks, and tired eyes. is a non-surgical treatment designed to lift, tighten and firm the skin of the face and neck. It is drastically different in its tightening and lifting ability because it not only tightens skin, but also the deep muscular layers underneath. The same foundational layers typically addressed in a surgical face-lift.

Before

drives sound waves into skin and deeper support structures that tighten existing collagen, and stimulate more collagen growth over the next three to six months. This is the first non-surgical device to combine focused ultrasound energy that visualizes the area to be treated then accurately delivers pinpoint energy to multiple structural layers of collagen. is the first ultrasound technology to receive FDA approval for a non-surgical brow, jowl and neck lift. It is used on areas of the face and neck that address sagging of the cheek, jawline, marionette lines, chin as well as brows and eyelids. Single areas may be treated or full face and neck for a more complete lift. A visible lift is commonly seen immediately following the procedure, with optimal results occurring over three to six months. There are no pre or post treatment restrictions. No down time, surgery, incisions, injections or scars and it’s done in thirty to sixty minutes. Technology is providing amazing ways to stay safely looking young!

Relief is right here in the West Valley Dr. Kukurin was named a Top Chiropractor by the Consumers Research Council of America. He is listed in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare. With over 20 years of experience using acupuncture, chiropracticand science based nutritional therapies, the results produced by our methods have been featured on local TV newscasts, published in scientific journals, indexed in the National Library of Medicine and have been presented Knee Pain at medical conferences at Johns Hopkins and the Peripheral Nerve Society.

Diabetic Neuropathy, Peripheral Neuropathy Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, Plantar Fasciitis If you are suffering from lower back, buttocks and or leg pain or your feet or legs are cramping, numb or burning especially at night, you almost certainly have a condition which involves the nerves of the legs. The largest nerve in the body, the sciatic nerve (pictured in red to the right), starts in the lower back, runs through the muscles of the buttocks and down to the tip of the toes. If this nerve gets irritated, you can experience really terrible pain anywhere along the course of the nerve. You may also experience burning, numbness and odd sensations in your muscles. Irritation of this nerve may produce severe cramping or crawling sensations in your muscles. Of course, your back and leg pain can be caused by a pinched nerve in your lower back. This can be from a vertebra that is out of place, it can be caused by a slipped disc or it can be caused by spinal stenosis or any combination of these problems. Each of these conditions, bad discs, spinal stenosis or displaced vertebrae have very different treatments. Knowing exactly why you have your back and leg troubles is absolutely essential for effective care.

Headaches, Vertigo, TMJ, Migraines, Sinus Headache Neck and Shoulder Pain, Pinched Nerves, Tennis Elbow and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Spinal Stenosis, Sciatica, Lower Back, Hip and Leg Pain

So how do you find results? The answer is called Integrative Neurology. Neurology is the study of the nerves. This allows us to diagnose tough nerve conditions like spinal stenosis, disc problems and neuropathy. What happens next truly separates our integrative neurology approach from anything else available to help correct lower back, hip, leg and foot problems. We have pioneered techniques to decompress nerves, but also use a number of natural substances that have been shown in recent scientific studies to help nerves re-grow and repair. There are no current drugs that can do this. But that’s not all. We combine special electrical stimulation techniques with acupuncture. A combination that has been shown to correct abnormal nerve function and promote nerve repair. There simply is no better or more comprehensive system for diagnosing and correcting the cause of spinal stenosis, neuropathy and other conditions that cause lower back, hip and leg pain and numbness. Life & Death are in the Power of the Tongue!

“I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:” ~ Deuteronomy 30:19 Welcome to our March issue. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 18:21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” Are you blessing your life or cursing it? Listen to what you are saying. Are you calling defeat into your future or blessings? Here are some Bible verses to encourage you to speak blessings over your life:

1 Peter 3:10

For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:

Proverbs 15:1

A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

Proverbs 10:19

In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips [is] wise.

Ephesians 4:29

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

Matthew 12:36-37

But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

Psalms 127:3

Lo, children [are] an heritage of the LORD: [and] the fruit of the womb [is his] reward.

Proverbs 12:18

There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise [is] health.

James 1:26

If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceieth his own heart, this man's religion [is] vain.

Psalms 19:14

Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

Proverbs 15:28

The heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.

Proverbs 15:4

A wholesome tongue [is] a tree of life: but perverseness therein [is] a breach in the spirit.

Philippians 2:14

Do all things without murmurings and disputings:

Proverbs 17:27

He that hath knowledge spareth his words: [and] a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.

James 3:8

But the tongue can no man tame; [it is] an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

Proverbs 13:3

He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: [but] he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction. Until next time, God Bless You for Your Support!

Sunny’s Hair and Wigs Celebrating 25 years of quality wigs, hair extensions, hairpieces and incredible customer service With locations in Atlanta, Minneapolis and Mesa—along with a strong online presence—Sunny’s Hair and Wigs is the go-to place for wigs, hair extensions and hairpieces. And, with the motto that “your hair is your ultimate accessory,” the popular business is celebrating its 25th anniversary this month. “In 2003, as our youngest daughter prepared to leave for college, my husband and I decided it was time for us to relocate to a state with much warmer climate after raising our four daughters in the Midwest; 13 years of which we spent living in Minneapolis, Minnesota,” says Lisa Memberr, vice president. “During our exploratory visit to Arizona, we discovered there was a demand for wigs and hair extensions in the East Valley. Since we had also planned to open another store, we agreed that Arizona would be our new home with its warm climate, good quality of life and great business opportunities. God confirmed our step of faith by providing a seamless process of procuring a retail location in the city of Mesa.” Memberr says that Sunny’s Hair and Wigs is best known for selling “the highest quality wigs, hair extensions and hairpieces complemented by a commitment to exemplary customer service.” “We carry the largest selection of human hair and synthetic hair wigs, human hair extensions, which include virgin hair, I-tips, U-tips, tape extensions, wefted extensions, clip-ins, ponytails, bangs and more,” she notes. “We pride ourselves on being on the cutting edge of the hair and beauty industry.” For new and current customers, Memberr and her staff provide a comfortable environment to learn about their

products. She says that there is always a licensed stylist on staff, private fitting rooms, competitive prices, knowledgeable staff and discounts for those experiencing hair loss. There are also discounts available for licensed cosmetologists and beauty industry workers. “We leverage more than 25 years of integrity and experience to research, receive customer feedback, innovate and monitor beauty industry trends to select the products and product lines we carry,” Memberr explains. “We prioritize our product selections based only on the highest standards of quality rather than on cost. We have long standing established relationships with our reputable vendors who stand behind their products.” On Saturday, March 25, Sunny’s Hair and Wigs will be hosting an anniversary event. The event will feature 25% off of all products and include a gift basket raffle, with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society. There will also be giveaways all day. “Our flagship location is in Minneapolis, Minnesota, which first opened its doors in 1992,” Memberr says. “A variety of additional activities are planned at each respective location such as giveaways, hair extension demos, gift baskets and raffle prizes as well as light bites and beverages. The focus of our March 25 event is to express our gratitude and appreciation for the loyal support of our customers over the many years.” With 25 years under their belt, Sunny’s Hair and Wigs looks forward to many more years to come—especially here in the Valley.

A Local Nonprofit Aims to Stop Bullying The Dion Initiative uses research, offers resources to help improve childhood experiences

Founded in 2012 under the name Stop Bullying by Nicole Stanton, office managing partner of Quarles & Brady, The Dion Initiative for Child Well-Being and Bullying Prevention is a resource and research program that promotes environments that foster the health, well-being and academic success of children. “The seeds of the organization began to grow during a media interview, actually,” says Stanton. “The Arizona Republic interviewed me when my husband, Greg, was sworn in as Phoenix Mayor, curious as to what programs I was most interested in becoming engaged in as I moved into my role as the First Lady of Phoenix.” Bullying was something Stanton knew all too well as her late brother, Dion, was bullied relentlessly as a child. That, coupled with being a mother herself, motivated Stanton to action. “I gathered together a kitchen cabinet of educators, business leaders and nonprofit groups who all had first-hand knowledge of the problem, determined to develop a proactive approach to fighting bullying in all of its forms,” says Stanton. This resulted in an anti-bullying summit at ASU in 2012, attended by more than 300 teachers, principals and administrators featuring Dr. Dan Olweus, a research professor of psychology from Norway considered the “pioneer” of bullying research. That day – the organization was born in earnest. Since then, The Dion Initiative (as it is now known – in honor

of Stanton’s late brother) has focused on developing and promoting evidence-based research and programs on antibullying, developing a comprehensive database of approved programs with proven results as well as speaking to the legislature on the topic and assisting both the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office and Arizona Department of Health Services, respectively, on statewide anti-bullying platforms and proactive programming. “In an era of increasingly scarce school and community resources, we cannot afford to gamble our future on flashin-the-pan solutions that manipulate emotions and rely on anecdotes as proof. Science and experience are required; as is an understanding that real change requires time and commitment,” says Stanton. They have also participated in assisting develop an antibullying app, The Bully Blocker, and have partnered with the Phoenix Mercury several times on a series of field trips and interactive events for school-aged children encouraging them that if they “see something to say something” when it comes to bullying in their schools or homes. With Stanton at helm as founder and R. Bradley Snyder, a recognized expert in the field of child welfare and author of 5 Simple Truths of Raising Kids, on board as executive director, together they drive the program forward. The next step: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). “Childhood experiences, both positive and negative, have a tremendous impact on future violence victimization and perpetration, and lifelong health and opportunity. Negative experiences, certainly including bullying but also violence at

home, extreme poverty, the loss of a parent or even drug abuse in the home can lead to toxic stress,” says Stanton. Toxic stress – the prolonged activation of the stress response systems – can disrupt the development of brain architecture and other organ systems, and increase the risk for stress-related disease and cognitive impairment, well into the adult years. In extreme cases, toxic stress can contribute to heart disease, diabetes, cancer and even death. Given this, The Dion Initiative partnered with Phoenix Children’s Hospital – who have published extensive research on the topic, learning that Arizona’s children have exponentially more ACEs than the national average – with the goal of addressing possible solutions as well as why the state’s numbers lag the nation.

“This may sound daunting, even foreboding, but the Dion Initiative is optimistic, perhaps because we know that some of the solutions may already be out there. A large and growing body of research explores the causes of and solutions to the adverse conditions many of our children face, such as bullying,” says Stanton. “Likewise, professionals in the field are making exciting progress in their work with children, youth, families, and their communities. Finally, new and bold ideas are coming from all sectors of society, but these ideas need to be put into practice and evaluated.”

“Best medical facility and staff in the Valley, hands down, in my opinion. Highly recommend them if you need help due to chronic pain.” – Nancy K. “Active Life is the most amazing group of professionals I have encountered in all my years dealing with pain. From Dr.s Lundquist & Smith to the PA's, techs, receptionists, et al, these are people I highly recommend and have done so for years. I carry their cards in both my purse and saddlebag when horseback riding to give out when I meet people experiencing severe pain.” – Cindy E. “I’ve been competing in strength athletics since the age of 15 and have been competing at a professional level for the last 5 years. It wasn’t until 2014 that I needed to seek treatment for a patella tendon tear that I received while competing at the Commerce World’s Strongest Man in China. I had only heard about PRP treatments and the great benefits that it could have on one’s injuries - that’s when I found Dr. Lundquist at Active Life Physical Medicine & Pain Center in Avondale, Arizona. To this day, I have received Orthovisc injections to both knees along with PRP. I have also received PRP treatments for muscle tears and other tendon tears that I’ve obtained while competing at World’s Strongest Man. During the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique™, a needle is used to make a small hole in the patient’s existing gum tissue. Through this pinhole, special instruments are used to gently loosen the gum tissue. These tools help expand and slide the gumline to cover the exposed root structure. There are no grafts, no sutures, and no incisions needed with the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique™. It simply involves the adjustment of the existing tissue. Dr. Chang and Dr. Svans were two of the first dentists in Arizona and the United States trained and certified as Pinhole Surgical Technique™ Providers. Regenerative Medicine An Alternative to Surgery Our bodies have an innate ability to heal. The problem is that some places in our bodies starve from circulation and cannot pump in enough important cells that help to signal healing. We have known since the time of Hippocrates that if we stimulate these areas in some capacity that the body will heal. Since the age of modern medicine, it has focused on surgery, replacement and management. If patients had a “blown-out” knee, doctors performed surgery and prescribed drugs for the pain. Regenerative medicine has changed this algorithm.

How does regenerate medicine work? Although the biochemical processes are very complicated, its overall mechanism is by utilizing growth factors and stem cells. These act as messengers to cue important cells already circulating in our body to come to the damaged area, repair and strengthen it. Over time, this area regenerates new tissue and eventually the pain goes away. This process peaks at about six to eight weeks but continues to heal up to nine months. What types of regenerative treatments are available? There are four main types: stem cells found in bone marrow and adipose (fat cells); platelet rich plasma (PRP); alpha 2 macroglobulin (A2M), amniotic fluid that is harvested from mothers undergoing planned cesarean section births that have given permission; and prolotherapy. How is this done? The cells are harvested utilizing different methods. Platelet rich plasma and A2M are taken by a blood draw. Bone marrow is taken from an area in your hip. Adipose is done by a mini –lipoaspirate (liposuction). Prolotherapy is usually a mixture of dextrose and saline or lidocaine that is injected into ligaments that are damaged or weak to strengthen them. Amniotic fluid is prepared ahead of time and either frozen or preserved with purion process. The pathological area is identified and marked utilizing ultrasound typically or possibly X-ray. The area is anesthetized and then the harvested cells are injected. 30 March 2017 | azhealthandliving.com

How do I know what is right for me? Every problem is different and needs to be evaluated by a trained regenerative treatment physician that is intimately familiar with musculoskeletal anatomy and has image guidance such as ultrasound or fluoroscopy available. The body’s tissues are all different in how they degenerate after injury or repetitive trauma. Joints that are non-weight bearing may need a different treatment than a joint that is weight bearing. There are times when combining treatments may be necessary. Also, if someone has to be on blood thinners and is not allowed to discontinue, treatments such as amniotic fluid may be a better option. Spinal discs, cartilage, ligaments and tendon heal differently and may require more or less treatments. Other factors that affect are healing is smoking status and age. What are some dos and don’ts? Because most of these treatments are heavily reliant on your own body’s nutritional status, eating protein rich foods, fruits and vegetables will build up better cells to inject. No antiinflammatories two weeks prior and two weeks after is generally considered important as these suppress the inflammatory process. What’s the cost? This is highly variable depending on what is required. Some insurances may cover these treatments, although as a general rule, they are not covered.

Colorectal Cancer Prevention By MS

Colorectal cancer is a formidable foe. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States. Some risks for colorectal cancer are beyond an individual's control. For example, the CCS notes that a personal or family history of polyps in the colon, rectum, or both significantly increases a person's risk of developing colorectal cancer. Lynch syndrome, a condition caused by gene mutations, causes polyps to develop in the lining of the colon, rectum or both. Since Lynch syndrome is inherited, there is nothing men and women can do to reduce their risk of developing it. Research into colorectal cancer is ongoing, making it difficult for doctors to say certain behaviors or approaches are certain to reduce a person's risk of developing the disease. But there are certain things individuals can do that might help save them from falling victim to colorectal cancer.

Get screened. The CDC notes that colorectal cancer

usually begins when polyps form in the colon or rectum. If they go undetected, these polyps may turn into cancer. Screening can detect polyps early so they are found before they develop into cancer. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends colorectal cancer screening using highsensitivity fecal occult blood testing, or FOBT; sigmoidoscopy; or colonoscopy for men and women between the ages of 50 and 75.

Embrace physical activity. While men and women who

are physically active can still get colorectal cancer, the CCS notes that people who live sedentary lifestyles are at a higher risk of developing the disease than those who are active.

Maintain a healthy weight. According to the CCS,

people who are overweight or obese have greater incidence rates of colorectal cancer than those who maintain healthy weights. The CCS also notes that men with a high body mass index, or BMI, seem to be most at risk of developing colorectal cancer. azhealthandliving.com |March 2017

CONNECT WITHIN

MIND, BODY & spirIT By Julian Pencilliah, author of The Jetstream of Success, www.thejetstreamofsuccess.com

Five Rules for Becoming an Intellectual Maverick No matter how well our lives may be going, many of us seem to be at our wit’s end when it comes to attaining that next level of success, but there is a solution to this challenge. Whether we want to improve our relationships, spiritual development, emotional well-being, health, or monetary ambitions, we so often find that we’re our own greatest enemies. You see it time and time again – individuals rise out of the most devastating circumstances and transform their lives into greatness. If you’re in a place where you feel that life’s closing in on you, and you have a pressing urgency to transform your misfortune into a positive opportunity, then you must embrace the fact that realizing your potential is a process. How does one start this process? Become a student of your own history and become an intellectual maverick.

Irrevocably change your world. Piece together an everfuller understanding of yourself with the intention of reinventing yourself a thousandfold. We should always aim toward exponential achievements, with the wisdom of knowing that we are not chasing the achievement, but rather chasing the consciousness of who we need to become in order to materialize our success. Think with sophistication. This is your capacity to become more strategic in your approach to life. This simply means that you need to become more process-oriented, rather than goal-oriented. Intelligence is knowing what’s required of you. Sophisticated thinking is the process of making successful decisions over a lifetime.

Exceed probability amplitudes. Achieving success in any arena of your life is framed within your ability to eliminate innate weaknesses and biases. History tells us that not all greats have off-the-chart IQs, nor are they born with limitless freedom. In fact, it’s the triumph over less-than-favorable circumstances and a determination to achieve that often builds the character necessary for success. Great individuals set out to achieve outstanding results, and make their decisions within intellectual criteria. All the greats have engaged a higher impulse, a higher bandwidth and an inherent strength. 32 March 2017| azhealthandliving.com

Smile with radiance. Life is beauty in every direction, but we are often unable to see it if we are too consumed with our lives. The simple truth is that you can touch more of the beauty of life only by touching your own beauty. If you look through the lens of love, gratitude and contribution, then you will be able to see and touch more of the infinite beauty that makes life on Earth a heaven. Learn to smile like sunshine every day and brighten up your world.

Get lucky. Luck has more to do with self-engagement than any random twist of fate. Be bold and champion your life to exceed the probability amplitude of any statistic of luck. We are all endowed with the ability to achieve success in any facet of our lives; success is framed within the definition of the analytical tools and emotional disciplines necessary to champion your life forward. Above all, live by three simple words: compassion, love and gratitude. We need to act on these three words daily. Doing so will irrevocably change your world.

Five Steps for a More Fulfilling Life By John C. Neyland, author of How to Live the Life You’ve Yet to Dream

There’s a reason people love the start of a New Year – or the first day of spring, or maybe the first day of school. The idea of a clean slate – of making changes or starting over fresh – can be exhilarating. It isn’t necessarily that you don’t like the life you live. It’s just that you suspect there’s something you’re missing – something more fulfilling. The truth is, those possibilities are always within your reach. But to have the life you want means you have to change course. Here are some ways to make that turn in your life:

Put fear in its place and understand it. Fear has no power unless you lend it power. It doesn’t change the end result, and often it causes more damage than whatever it was you were so worried about.

Compromise is a dirty word. It can steal your life and dreams. To work for or spend time with someone who doesn’t share your values is a compromise, and compromise robs your energy and affects your momentum.

Dream without restraint. Thinking about what you want

to do only in the context of what you know you can do is more of a nightmare than a dream. Pursue your goals with all you have. Don’t be concerned with failing. The journey and the struggle can be extremely satisfying. It rivals the attainment of a goal.

Be impatiently focused. We have a limited a number of

breaths to build the world around us. Focus on a goal and don’t wait for the right moment or perfect conditions to go for it. Time matters. azhealthandliving.com |March 2017

They are placed very close to the eardrum and are worn all day every day. They can be worn in the shower, while exercising, sleeping and while awake. Most individuals who wear Lyric are scheduled for follow-up appointments every two months to remove the device and replace it with a new one. Your audiologist can program lyric, so it is tailored for your loss. It works great for mild to moderate hearing loss. Lyric is placed deep in the canal and uses the natural acoustic properties of the ear to filter sound. This works similar to someone with normal hearing. Most individuals using Lyric devices love the way it sounds, and they love the hassle free features that go with it. Lyric is also a great device for individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Lyric can be a completely life changing device. Individuals who have previously worn hearing aids love not having to worry about maintenance, cleaning, and storage of the devices. They are impossible to lose. When you wear aids 24/7, it is just one less thing you have to think about.

Thankfully, there are a number of effective medications available to relieve the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Unfortunately these medications provide help with some, but not all of the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Slow movement, freezing, trouble turning and in particular, balance issues leading to falls are important symptoms of Parkinson’s disease that degrade the quality of life in Parkinson’s patients, in spite of their medication use. A recent study published in the Journal Aging Clinical and Experimental Research has found that neural rehabilitation in addition to standard medication can significantly improve the quality-of-life for patients struggling with Parkinson’s disease.

Q. Why do I need a colonoscopy?

Q. Are flip-flops good for your feet?

A. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the U.S. amongst men and women, and the second leading cause of cancer related death overall. One in 20 Americans will suffer colorectal cancer that is about 5 percent of the National population. In this week, alone 19 people will lose their fight with colon cancer in Arizona. It is estimated that over 50 thousand deaths will occur from colorectal cancer this year. That is a staggering amount when you consider how highly treatable and curable the disease is in its early stages.

A. While flip-flops are an easy and inexpensive choice for summer footwear, the effects of wearing them long-term or exclusively can lead to a range of foot, knee and back problems, as well as certain fungal and bacterial infections. Flip-flops offer little support, allowing your arches to collapse. This can lead to gait abnormalities that can cause tendinitis, heel pain, and even sprained ankles if you trip. Lastly, because flip-flops offer little protection, you’re also at greater risk for stubbed toes, puncture wounds, sunburn, and crushing types of injuries.

Risks include anyone over the age of 40 at which point the risk of the disease doubles every 10 years. Ninety percent of all colorectal cancers will occur over the age of 50. Men are twice more likely to get the disease over women. People with first-degree relatives (parents/sibling/offspring) who have colon cancer have 2-3 time increased risk of developing the disease.

As a result, to safely wear flip-flops and minimize risks, it is recommended that you:

Symptoms can include rectal bleeding or a change in bowel habits such as diarrhea or constipation. Unfortunately, many polyps and cancers will fail to produce any symptoms at all.

• Look into purchasing “orthopedic” flipflops that have a built-in arch support and a stiffer sole that doesn’t allow the shoe to bend in half. Avoid the cheap foam or plastic flip-flops.

Early detection is key for most colorectal cancers start as polyps. These small polyps are detectable via colonoscopy and highly treatable at this stage for they allow for removal before transforming into cancer. There are over a million colorectal cancer survivors in the U.S. If everyone 50 years or older had a colonoscopy screening, as many as 80 percent of cancer deaths could be prevented.

• Keep your feet moisturized during the summer to avoid cracks in the skin that could cause fungal infections.

• Don’t run or play sports while wearing flip-flops. • Avoid driving while wearing flip-flops, as they can easily slip off your foot and become lodged under the pedals.

• Alternate between flip-flops and athletic shoes to provide your feet with a break. Q. Why do women experience sleep -disordered breathing? A. Sleep-disordered breathing in women is

frequently tied to hormone imbalances. The problems are internal and chemically related, therefore, telltale signs such as obesity and age that allows for easy diagnosis in men is not as clear in women.

Post-menopausal women are at a high risk for sleep-disordered breathing, according to a 2003 article in The American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Their bodies cease to produce estrogen and progesterone, two hormones that are believed to be intimately connected to the ability to breathe. Estrogen dictates the location of fat on a woman’s body and when that hormone ceases to be produced, any weight gain will instead be dictated by testosterone, gained in places more common to males, such as the neck and abdomen. Sleep-disordered breathing occurs because a woman’s body cannot handle excess fat on the neck and abdomen. Although not completely understood, scientists believe progesterone stimulates breathing. When progesterone production ceases, coupled with a lack of estrogen, sleep-disordered breathing often results. Pre-menopausal women are also at risk, as they are just beginning to enter menopause. Although their hormones are not depleted yet, they do experience imbalances, which can also trigger sleep-disordered breathing. Thirty-three percent of women who are pregnant snore. According to a recent study, sleep-disordered breathing during pregnancy may cause growth retardation of the fetus. Also of concern is preeclampsia, high blood pressure during pregnancy, which can be fatal for both baby and mother. –Dr. Croft Vistancia Orthodontics 623.566.0800 azhealthandliving.com | March 2017

Q. What can I do to stop grinding my teeth? A. Being fitted for a mouth guard/night

guard will help protect your teeth from the effects of grinding while you sleep. However, in order to cease grinding completely it’s important to treat the triggers for why you grind your teeth. If stress is causing your bruxism, ask your doctor or dentist about stress reduction techniques and options. Exercise, stress counseling, or prescription muscle relaxers may help reduce how often or severely you grind your teeth. Other tips to help reduce bruxism include: Cut back or eliminate foods that contain caffeine from your diet. This includes coffee, soda, tea and chocolate. Avoid alcohol. Alcohol tends to increase the severity and frequency of bruxism. Don’t chew on anything that is not food. This includes gum, pencils or pens. Constantly chewing conditions your jaw muscles to stay clenched and makes you more likely to grind your teeth. Pay attention to your mouth. If you notice that you grind or clench your teeth during the day, train yourself to relax. Position the tip of your tongue between your front teeth to make it harder to clench or grind your teeth.

Q. Why should I get a facelift instead Q. What does my credit score have to be in order to buy a home? What of a mini facelift? score do I need for down payment A. Everyone wants to see long lasting results assistance? as quickly as possible. Because of this, it’s easy to see the appeal of alternatives to a facelift, such as a mini facelift. Products that claim to offer facelift-like results don’t measure up to the real thing.

Both a mini-lift and a standard facelift involve tightening of the SMAS (Superficial Musculo Aponeurotic System) layer. Mini facelifts can tighten the wrinkles and sagging skin on the lower third of the face. However, there are many disadvantages of a mini-lift and you may be better off with a lasting facelift instead. Mini facelifts often don’t last as long and rarely treat problem areas of the face like a regular facelift does. A facelift removes excess skin, tightens underlying tissues and muscle on the face and neck. It can correct midface sagging, marionette lines, jowls and a double chin, maintaining its reputation as the ‘gold standard’ for facial rejuvenation. Whereas, a mini lift only treats the lower face, a facelift includes the greater portion of the face and neck. Lifting and repositioning the underlying tissue layers and muscles bring the jaw line and neck back to a more youthful position.

Relax your jaw before bed. Using a warm washcloth on the face at night will help relax the jaw prior to sleep. Position it on your cheek in front of your earlobe to get maximum results.

A. Credit scores can be as low as 580 to qualify to buy a home. You do however want to keep in mind that at a credit score of under 620 your options will be limited and that you will have to pay a higher interest rate. If you apply with a credit score of 620 or higher you will have the benefit of a better rate and a variety of different loan and down payment assistance programs that may be available to you. Down payment assistance programs look at credit scores but there are other qualifying factors; for example income, city and property type, to name a few. There are many different programs available and each has different benefits so it’s always best to contact your lender. Working with a lender that is licensed and certified to offer these programs is a key factor to ensure that you will find the program that is the perfect fit for you. If buying a home is something that you feel is out of reach because you don’t have the down payment funds, just know that there are plenty of options available. I always say, “it’s not a matter of if you can buy a home, it’s a matter of when.”

Q. What can I do to treat osteoarthritis? A. Although there are many factors that contribute to osteoarthritis, we now know that this molecule, alpha 2 macroglobulin (A2M), protects the joint space from deteriorating. When there is not enough of the molecule, osteoarthritis may start to occur. Normally there are destructive enzymes present in an inflamed joint and the body has a certain threshold that it can take care of without leading to osteoarthritis. A2M has an important role in binding proteases (destructive enzymes). This decreases inflammation and pain and assists in healing. There are many different treatments available for arthritis that are considered traditional and can provide relief such as cortisone, gel injections, physical therapy, modalities, and medications. None of these options come from your own body. A2M comes from your own body by a blood draw and the A2M is then concentrated and injected back into the affected area. In order to know if A2M is right for you, a sample of your synovial fluid must be aspirated from your joint and examined for the biomarker Fibronectin-Aggrecan Complex (FAC). A2M injections are done prior to injecting any regenerative treatment to optimize its effectiveness. Regenerative treatments such as Platelet rich plasma, adipose derived stem cells, bone marrow derived stem cells, amniotic fluid and prolotherapy “take” better when the chemical environment is friendlier.

Q. What can I do to get a good night’s sleep?

Q. My skin is patchy, red and spotty —what can I do?

A. It is a new year and we all want to make positive changes in our lives. Making healthy food choices and getting enough restorative sleep should be on our to-do list. Adequate rest will make us happier so we can have more fun and better enjoy our family, neighbors, co-workers and friends.

A. Sun damage can appear in many forms, and even the most diligent of sunscreen wearers can have sun damage. The most common type of damage presents as brown spots, known as hyperpigmentation, but often referred to as age or sunspots. This damage can be very evident on the face, chest, arms, hands and even legs. Other sun damage materializes as broken capillaries, patchy redness on the sides of the neck or that permanent triangle of redness on the chest.

Poor sleep creates many negative issues that can arise, including impaired judgement, weight gain, low immunity, poor memory and aging skin. One in five accidents is caused by drowsy drivers with a slower reaction time. Lack of sleep also gives you more risk for heart issues, diabetes, cancer and other health related conditions. Some suggestions for a better night sleep include: Shut off all devices at least an hour before bed, take a warm shower, write down things to deal with tomorrow and slow even breathing will help relax you. Limit caffeine to early in the day. A dark, cool room and a regular bedtime schedule will help regulate your body to get your 7 to 9 hours. In addition to these tips, you can try other options, such as a sleep bracelet.

With all protocols, it is necessary to use medical grade products, such as lighteners and sunscreen. A yearly maintenance protocol is also recommended for continued years of youthful looking skin. Remember, a spotted, ruddy, red/brown skin tone is always more aging than a few wrinkles, so make this the fall you get clearer, brighter, more vibrant skin!

These injections should be done by a physician who has an intimate understanding of the musculoskeletal anatomy.

– Dr. Lundquist Active Life Physical Medicine & Pain Center 623.535.9777

Each type of sun damage can be treated, leaving you with clearer, brighter and more evenly toned skin. Photofacials are a great no downtime treatment that can deal with brown spots quickly and efficiently. More severe browns, with a combination of redness, are best addressed with Iconic Skin Rejuvenation, which can address brown spots, redness, broken capillaries and stimulate collagen. The excel V Yag laser can address minimal to significant redness with its multifunctionality, including the popular pain free Laser Genesis. If the pigment is brown and patchy it may be melasma, and that is best treated with chemical peels and topical prescription products, because lasers and lightbased devices can make it worse.

Q. Why should I advertise my business? A. No matter how wonderful your service or product is, if you don't advertise, nobody will know. The goal of advertising should be to cost effectively reach the largest audience possible to attract new patients/ customers. If done correctly, advertising can be a wonderful investment; if done poorly, advertising can become financially draining. Here are four tips to start a successful advertising plan:

1. Go after your target audience; in the right places! No product or service will appeal to everyone. Do research to understand who your audience is and determine what they read, watch and listen to. Find your market and be everything you can be to that audience. 2. Highlight your competitive advantage; what makes you unique? Find your competitive edge. Too many ads highlight all the features and services and fail to sell their specific benefits. Unless you highlight these benefits, how can you deliver value to potential patients/customers? 3. Establish your image. You have a car full of hungry kids and there are only two places to stop for lunch; you recognize the McDonald’s arches but you have never heard of the other place. Where will you stop? Image counts; don’t lose a chance to make an impression. 4. You have to spend money to make money. Advertising is not the place to cut corners. Doing so affects the bottom line. Successful advertising may cost some money, but that is because it works. – Great Central Sun Media Group 602.335.0771 advertise@azhealthandliving.com

Q. Why should our bodies be alkaline? Q. Why do some home care companies A. Your body is at its healthiest when it is charge less than others do for the same slightly alkaline. An acidic pH can result from services? an acid forming diet, emotional stress, toxic overload and immune reactions or any process that deprives the cells of oxygen and other nutrients. The body will try to compensate for acid by utilizing alkaline mineral reserves like calcium from the bones.

Your cells, the chemical reactions inside them, your beneficial bacteria in your gut and your immune system all work better in a slightly alkaline environment. Research has proven that disease cannot survive in an alkaline state and that viruses, bacteria, yeast, mold, fungus, candida and cancer cells thrive in an acidic, low oxygen, low pH environments. Cancer is not compatible in a healthy pH environment full of oxygen. Dr. Otto Warburg won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1931 for this discovery. For example, cancer of the heart doesn’t exist. This is because blood flowing from the lungs into the heart is at the highest pH and oxygen levels within the entire body, according to research. As the blood travels through the lungs, acidic toxins are thrown out of the system leaving it rich with oxygen and a high blood pH.

A. When comparing home care companies, be certain you are comparing companies that really offer the same services and have the same high standards. In Arizona, non-medical home care companies are not required to be licensed nor is there any oversight by the department of health services. While licensing may be in our future, at this time anyone can provide home care services even if they have no expertise in the field. Some folks coordinate services from their homes and hire caregivers as needed. These companies typically offer very little if any training for their caregivers and are not able to truly match caregivers to clients according to their needs. Some use contracted caregivers and do not actually employ them. These companies do not pay employment taxes, workers’ compensation or carry the needed liability insurance. A reputable agency sends a professional to do the initial assessment and has continuous supervision of the care provided. They employ experienced caregivers and do criminal background check and employment history verification on all applicants before hiring. When comparing companies, be sure they are truly offering the same services and value. Sun Cities CareGivers assures the safety of our clients by employing registered nurses who do all of our assessments and supervise our caregivers.

RELATIONSHIPS & PARENTING

BE PRESENT

By MS

How First-Time Parents Can Cope With Colic First-time parents face many challenges upon bringing their new babies home. One of the more frustrating challenges new parents may face is colic, a confusing condition that can be uncomfortable for both parents and their babies.

What is colic? According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, roughly 20 percent of all babies will develop colic, a condition in which children may cry inconsolably, scream, extend or pull up their legs, and pass gas. When a baby develops colic, the causes of which are unknown, his or her stomach may be enlarged or distended with gas.

What are the symptoms of colic? Babies tend to be finicky, so those that are fussy are not necessarily dealing with colic. But when healthy babies who are well-fed experience the following symptoms, colic might be the culprit.

Predictable periods of fussiness: Babies who have fussy periods each day during similar time frames may be experiencing colic. The AAP notes that these periods of fussiness are particularly common among babies with colic between the hours of 6 p.m. and midnight. Intense or inconsolable crying: The Mayo Clinic says babies with colic may experience intense, high-pitched crying that sounds distressed. During these bouts of crying, babies' faces may be flushed, and it may be nearly impossible for parents to console their babies. Inexplicable crying: Babies tend to cry when they are hungry and when they have soiled themselves. But babies with colic will cry for no apparent reason. Changes in posture: During a colic episode, babies' legs may curl up and they may clench their fists. Abdominal muscles also may tighten during colic episodes. 44 March 2017

| azhealthandliving.com

When does colic begin? Babies with colic will typically begin to exhibit symptoms within a few weeks of being born. While the condition is frustrating for parents and babies, colic often improves by three months of age.

How to handle a baby with colic The AAP recommends that parents who suspect their baby has colic first consult their pediatricians to confirm that the baby's crying is not linked to a serious medical condition. Once something more serious has been ruled out, parents can discuss multiple topics with their pediatricians:

Nursing: Mothers who are nursing may try eliminating potentially irritating products, such as caffeine, onions and cabbage, from their diets. Formula: The AAP suggests parents discuss protein hydrolysate formulas with their pediatricians if food sensitivity is causing the discomfort. Pacifiers: Pacifiers may provide instant relief from colic to some babies, while others may refuse pacifiers outright. More information about colic is available at www. healthychildren.org.

Get Prepared for Summer Camp Season By MS

Many people put off summer camp planning until it is too late. Parents should keep in mind that camps begin registration early in the year and have specific cut-off dates for enrollment. Parents who want to beat the crowds this year can use this guide to help plan a summer camp agenda.

Attend an orientation seminar. Take the time to visit

prospective camps for a tour, and use this open house as an opportunity to learn more about the programs offered. If available, find a camp employee to discuss your child's eligibility for enrollment. Some camps may offer webinars for convenience.

Establish payment schedules. Summer camps vary in

price. The ACA says camp costs range from $100 to more than $1,500 per week. However, many accredited camps offer some sort of financial assistance for children from families with limited financial means. If cost is a factor, be sure to broach the subject.

Prepare children for the physical challenges a camp may present. Summer camp activities may be rigorous,

and campers may need to be cleared by a physician before starting. Be sure to schedule your child a physical and bring along any pertinent forms. Children also can increase their levels of physical activity compared to the often-sedentary nature of winter. Such preparation can prevent injuries when engaging in outdoor and physical activities.

Shop for supplies. Camps are likely to provide a list of

requirements with regard to clothing and other equipment campers will need. Make sure kids have enough shorts, Tshirts, socks, athletic shoes, swimsuits, toiletries, and other camp necessities before they leave.

Keep children in the loop. Engage children in the

planning process to help alleviate their fears and get them excited about summer camp.

Common Myths About Frozen Foods Frozen foods are staples in many households. Freezing foods can ensure there's always something to eat at home, and freezing leftovers can help prevent waste created when such foods spoil before they can be eaten. Wasted food is a pressing issue across North America. Americans throw away approximately $165 billion worth of food each year, which translates to as much as $2,200 per household, according to a recent study from the Natural Resources Defense Council. Freezing foods can cut back on that waste and make people feel better about their eating habits at home, especially when they push past the myths and get to the facts about frozen foods.

MYTH: Frozen food is less nutritious. FACT: Frozen foods can be even more nutritious than some fresh items available at the grocery store. That's because out-of-season produce is sometimes picked before it has ripened and then stored while shipped long distances. Nutritional content may be depleted even before the food reaches the dinner table. Frozen foods are picked at the height of ripeness and then flash frozen. Such foods will only lose some of their nutritional value during storage.

MYTH: Frozen foods are more expensive. FACT: Very often frozen foods can be less expensive than fresh foods. That's especially true when purchasing whole foods rather than prepackaged convenience foods, such as whole meals.

MYTH: Frozen foods contain preservatives or are highly processed.

FACT: There are plenty of healthy choices in the grocery store freezer that are not highly processed. Look at the ingredient list to confirm what is in a product before buying it. The freezing process often removes the need to rely on preservatives, and freezing keeps food from developing bacteria or other microbes that make people sick. These microbes cannot grow on foods stored at temperatures less than zero Fahrenheit. 46 March 2017

|azhealthandliving.com

MYTH: All foods can be frozen. FACT: Many foods freeze under the right conditions, but there are some that should never be frozen. In certain foods, the structure may break down or taste can be affected. Delicate vegetables like lettuce will disintegrate when thawed. Creams can curdle or separate when thawed. Foods should not be frozen in cans or eggs in eggshells. Avoid freezing foods with high water content, as they will end up a soggy mess as they defrost.

MYTH: Frozen foods last forever. FACT: Many foods can stay fresh for months, but they can begin to lose quality and taste if they are left frozen for too long. Prepared leftovers can be stored for two to three months on average. Raw meat may last anywhere from four to 12 months. Label frozen foods to remember the "use by" date. Freezing food and relying on healthy frozen alternatives at the supermarket can be reliable and cost-effective. It also helps cut down on food waste from spoilage.

Four Foods That Can Boost Energy Levels By MS

Diet can go a long way toward increasing or lowering energy levels. No one wants to consume foods that will make it harder for them to get through the day, so the following are a handful of foods that pack an energetic punch.

Cashews: Cashews, which are high in magnesium, help to

convert sugar into energy. Magnesium deficiency can lead to low energy levels, so nuts that are high in magnesium, including cashews, can provide that midafternoon jolt that some people are seeking. Cashews are high in calories, so it's best for those looking to lose weight or maintain healthy weights to adhere to serving suggestion guidelines.

Skinless chicken: A study from researcher Judith Wurtman

of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Clinical Research Center found that alertness tends to increase when the brain produces the neurotransmitter dopamine and the hormone norepinephrine. Skinless chicken contains an amino acid known as tyrosine that helps in the production of both dopamine and norepinephrine.

Salmon: Omega-3 fatty acids can help the body fight inflammation, which has been linked to a host of ailments, including chronic fatigue. Salmon is also high in protein, which can eliminate the mid to late-afternoon hunger pangs that can derail healthy diets and contribute to weight gain. Beans: Beans are loaded with fiber, and that's a good thing

for energy levels. Like magnesium, which can also be found in beans, fiber takes a while to digest, extending the energyboosting properties of foods loaded with fiber. In spite of the growing movement to eat and live healthier, many adults still do not include enough fiber in their diets. Men and women can consult with their physicians to determine how to make that happen, but eating more beans is a good start. azhealthandliving.com | March 2017

DECORATE & IMPROVE

Three Tips to Prepare to Sell Your Home While a good home can find a buyer any time of year, homeowners might find the buyers' pool is strongest in spring and into summer. The reasons for that are many, ranging from parents wanting to move when their children are not in school to buyers wanting to move when the weather is most accommodating. Because spring is such a popular time to sell a home, homeowners who want to put their homes on the market should use winter as an opportunity to prepare their homes for the prying eyes of prospective buyers. The following tips can help homeowners during the preselling preparation process.

1. Address the exterior of the home Winter can be harsh on a home's exterior, so as winter winds down, homeowners who want to sell their homes should make an effort to address anything that might negatively affect their homes' curb appeal. A study of homes in Greenville, South Carolina, from researchers at Clemson University found that the value of homes with landscapes that were upgraded from "good" to "excellent" increased by 6 to 7 percent. If it's in the budget, hire professional landscapers to fix any problematic landscaping or address any issues that arose during the winter. Homeowners with green thumbs can tackle such projects on their own, but hiring professionals is akin to staging inside the home.

2. Conquer interior clutter Clutter has a way of accumulating over the winter, when people tend to spend more time indoors than they do throughout the rest of the year. Just like buyers are impressed by curb appeal, they are turned off by clutter. The Appraisal Institute suggests homeowners clear clutter out of their homes before appraisers visit, and the same approach can be applied to open houses. Buyers, like appraisers, see cluttered homes as less valuable. In addition, a home full of clutter might give buyers the impression, true or not that the home was not well maintained. 48 March 2017 | azhealthandliving.com

3. Eliminate odors A home's inhabitants grow accustomed to odors that might be circulating throughout the house. Pet odor, for instance, might not be as strong to a home's residents as it is to guests and prospective buyers. Because windows tend to stay closed throughout the winter, interior odors can be even stronger come late winter than they are during the rest of the year. A thorough cleaning of the house, including vacuuming and removal of any pet hair that accumulated over the winter can help to remove odor. In the weeks leading up to the open house, bathe pets more frequently, using a shampoo that promotes healthy skin so pet dander is not as prevalent. Open windows when the weather allows so more fresh air comes into the home.

Emma Stone A Homegrown Star

The Grand Canyon state has produced some talented Hollywood stars, one being Emma Stone, a recent winner of a Golden Globe Award for her appearance in the musical film “La La Land.” She was also nominated for an Academy Award for the same role. In addition to “La La Land,” the Scottsdaleborn and raised actress starred in “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” “The Help,” “The Amazing Spider-Man,” “Birdman,” and others. She also debuted on Broadway in the musical revival of “Cabaret.” In “La La Land,” Stone plays an aspiring actress; the film even showcases her going through the often-grueling audition process. Before she was a well-known star, Stone moved from Arizona to Los Angeles at age 15 to pursue acting and became extremely familiar with the audition process, according to multiple media reports. “It’s a strange sort of combination of a job interview and a first date, and a break-up on a daily basis,” Stone tells Lee Cowan about the audition process during a recent interview for CBS’ Sunday Morning. “You know, you walk into a room, and this could be the next seven years of your life, and you could buy a house, and you can travel, and, then, ‘Wait, oh never mind,’ break-up, it’s over, it’s never happening. Okay, well, I shouldn’t have built that up. Next day, ‘Are you the one, are you the one? No? Wow, no. You really weren’t the one—and you yelled at me!’” According to the Sunday Morning interview, Stone got her start at Valley Youth Theatre in Phoenix. 50 March 2017 | azhealthandliving.com

Recently, Stone and co-star Ryan Gosling had their hand and footprints enshrined outside of TCL Chinese Theater in Los Angeles, according to People. “I had no idea what … was going on,” Stone told Jimmy Kimmel about the honor. “I thought, ‘They’ve got all the hand and footprints. This is just a fun little celebration and they put it up in a museum somewhere. I don’t know why I thought this. It wasn’t explained to me.” It wasn’t just a little celebration though – it was another accolade to add to her growing list. So far, 2017 has been a great year for Stone – in January she won the SAG (Stage Actors Guild) Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role, according to E! News. E! News quoted a part of Stone’s acceptance speech: “I just wanted to say: I feel insecure a lot of the time. And feeling I deserve anything like this requires a bit of mental gymnastics. Getting to be a part—even a tiny, tiny part—of a group of people that cares about reflecting society and bringing people joy and making them laugh and giving people hope, or—God, I know I have to wrap up. I feel like I'm going to faint. We're in a tricky time in the world and our country. Things are inexcusable and scary and need action. I'm so grateful to be part of a group of people that cares and wants to reflect things back to society.” With multiple awards in hand, Stone told E! News that she already has her next project lined up. "I'm going to work on a movie really soon, so I'm very excited for that," she says. "It's called ‘The Favourite.’ It's by Yorgos Lanthimos—written and directed by him. I'm really looking forward to it. It'll be in fun. I'm going to be in in London!" According to Elle Magazine, Stone will also be appearing in an upcoming film called “Battle of the Sexes,” which is based on the famous 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, cites the magazine. Often hailed as one of Hollywood’s leading young actors, 2017 may prove to be Stone’s biggest year yet. azhealthandliving.com |March 2017

EXCEL & ACHIEVE

CAREER, BUSINESS & FINANCE By Dr. Stephen Josephs, author of Dragons at Work, www.dragonsatwork.com

Can Mindfulness Raise Your Net Worth? Sitting down with the intention of stilling one’s mind and body is no longer the sole province of hippies and Eastern medicine aficionados. The benefits of mindfulness meditation do not exist in a vacuum; mindfulness meditation not only lowers your blood pressure, it also offers a host of other positives, including increasing business acumen. It sharpens your intuitive business sense. By relaxing your body, breathing evenly, and paying attention to the present moment, you notice things you might otherwise miss. Paying exquisite attention is the key to staying real, and daily meditation builds that capacity. The benefits of a calm and focused mind are ubiquitous.

If you’re faced with what looks like an enticing opportunity, don’t just do something. Sit there. Breathe quietly and let the fear and greed subside. The easiest way to fool yourself in a deal, negotiation or transaction is to let your thinking stray from what’s happening and get seduced by a dream. It could be the dream your counterpart is spinning for you or simply the dream of results, good or bad. Like most people, you have probably experienced moments when you knew something – a business relationship, an investment – was going south, but you hesitated to act because you didn’t have facts to support your intuition. Sometimes, your intuition knows something that your logical mind does not.

Pay attention to what your body is telling you; you may be expressing signals that your logical mind is slow to notice. In a psychological study titled “The Iowa Gambling Task,” researchers gave subjects the task of making the most money possible by choosing cards from four decks. Unbeknownst to the subjects, the decks were stacked. Some were “good decks” (producing winners more of the time) and some were “bad decks,” (producing losers). After about 40 to 50 picks, most subjects caught on to which decks produced winners and losers. Their bodies knew something that their rational minds had missed. After about 10 picks they began to produce physiological symptoms of stress when 58 March 2017 | azhealthandliving.com

their hands reached for the bad decks. If you’re not paying attention to those subtle signals, your innate wisdom is inaccessible.

Meditation develops emotional balance and a better business mind. If you’ve never meditated, try it! Start small by simply sitting still and keeping your eyes closed for five minutes. Feel the weight of your body in its sitting position. Try to simplify your thoughts to basic things, down to the subtle sounds of the room, your breathing. Mindfulness meditation does not require extensive study in ancient traditions. Notice the difference after only five minutes; you will feel more relaxed. Later, try it for 10 minutes, and then longer. Do your due diligence in that state of mind. The equanimity that will sharpen your acumen is also the source of your happiness in life. Don’t trade it for anything.

How to Address Frequent Feelings of Coldness As people age, many report feeling chilly even when the temperature outside is warm. Studies have shown that older people are more likely to have slightly colder body temperatures than their younger counterparts. Feeling cold can be the result of the natural aging process, or it may be symptomatic of a medical condition. Understanding the reasons behind chilliness can help people take proper action. Aging adults can feel cold for various reasons. As people age, their metabolisms slow down, leading to decreased energy. During times of low energy output, one can feel cold. The American Geriatric Society Foundation for Health suggests that individuals with slower metabolisms may not produce enough heat from their own bodies to stay warm. Circulation issues also may be a concern. As people age, the walls of their blood vessels may lose their elasticity, negatively affecting circulation as a result.Vasoreceptors also may no longer be as quick to direct blood vessels in order to constrict to keep body temperature up. Inadequate fat storage may also be a contributor. Older people generally have less subcutaneous fat stores and muscle mass, both of which can insulate their bodies from cold weather. As a result, they may have trouble regulating body temperature. Exercise and healthy eating may help remedy this situation. Certain medical conditions or medications may be to blame, too. SUNY Upstate Medical University offers that some drugs, like beta-blockers, can decrease heart rate, which can reduce circulation to the extremities. High cholesterol levels can impair blood flow. Hypothyroidism, or an underperforming thyroid, also can affect a person's ability to regulate body temperature. It's imperative that people speak with their doctors to rule out any medical conditions or medication issues that may be contributing to their feelings of being cold. 60 March 2017

The following are some additional steps aging men and women can take to stay warm. · Make sure you are at a healthy weight for your gender and age. · Get the cardiovascular system pumping by exercising more. · Layer clothing until you feel comfortable so that you are not adjusting the thermostat as frequently. · Wear a vest to keep your chest warm to prevent heat being drawn from the extremities. Often the body will sacrifice heat in the hands and feet to keep its core warm. · Invest in wool socks and blankets, as wool will help wick away moisture from the body. Feeling cold is usually nothing out of the ordinary when a person gets older. Fortunately, there are ways that older men and women can stay warm.

"The ultimate reason to advertise and your choice of where to advertise is return on investment. A cheap ad campaign that produces few results ends up being an expensive ad campaign. With this in mind, we track our ROI in all advertising that we do. The AZH&L campaign by far has produced the best return on investment of any advertising vehicle we tried. Volunteering as an Older Adult How to Find the Right Fit for Your New Lifestyle

Many parents feel involving their children in volunteering at an early age can have a profound, long-lasting impact on their kids. But youngsters are not the only ones who can reap great rewards from volunteering, as studies show that men and women at, beyond or approaching retirement age also benefit greatly from volunteer work. Research from the Corporation for National and Community Service found that more than 20 million older adults contributed in excess of 3 billion hours of community service time each year from 2011 to 2013. The reasons why older adults volunteer are varied, but in its 2014 survey the AARP's Experience Corps found that 97 percent of its volunteers indicated that their volunteer work with the organization gave them a sense of purpose. Older adults who want to volunteer but have little or no history with volunteering might not know where to begin with regard to finding the right opportunity. The right fit can make all the difference for volunteers and the people they help, and the following tips might help older adults as they look for an opportunity that best utilizes their skills and experience.

Know your schedule. Older adults who are still working but want to volunteer may have a firm grasp on their schedules, but even retirees should not overestimate how much time they have to volunteer. Before you begin to look for an opportunity, write down your commitments and daily schedule, using this list to determine how much free time you have to volunteer. Some opportunities require greater time commitments than others, so make sure you know just how much time you can devote to an opportunity before signing up.

Give due consideration to your experience. Older adults who have retired or are on the cusp of retirement have a lifetime of experience they can use to help others. Imparting wisdom learned in your professional life can provide a sense of purpose and even make you feel as though you are still actively involved in the industry where you built your professional reputation. But life experience can also prove invaluable in volunteering opportunities. Mentoring programs give volunteers the chance to help 62 March 2017

| azhealthandliving.com

young people, and such opportunities can involve more than just offering professional advice.

Don't downplay the significance of certain opportunities. Volunteering opportunities come in many variations, and each is significant in its own right. Coaching a grandchild's soccer team can have as significant an impact on the people you help as other volunteering opportunities. Volunteers offer their time because they have a passion to help others, and that help can be given in a myriad of ways.

Leave time for the rest of your life. Volunteering is a selfless act, and volunteers are the backbone of many successful charitable organizations. But older men and women should leave time for the rest of their lives as well. Retirement should be fulfilling but also include time for recreation, so don't downplay how important hobbies are to you in an attempt to find more time to volunteer. No retiree wants to grow resentful of his or her volunteer work because it leaves little time for other pursuits, so do your best to balance your charitable endeavors with the other things in life that matter to you.

Appointment Companions Are a Smart Move By MS

When visiting the doctor, it is easy for anyone to miss important components of what the doctor is saying, and it's just as easy to misunderstand certain instructions or medication information. Seniors who bring companions along to appointments with their physicians can reduce the risk of misunderstanding advice or diagnoses given by their doctors. Patients may find there are many advantages to bringing someone along to an appointment.

Listen. People tend to forget at least half of what they hear

in the doctor's office, says the Archives of Internal Medicine. This tendency may be increased when patients are nervous about the potential outcome of their visits. Bringing a companion along means that both people are actively listening. Together, the information they've heard can combine to provide a full account of the visit.

Taking notes. Companions can jot down important notes

about the appointment, such as dates and times for followup visits, medication advice, and any other instructions that may be forgotten once the patient leaves the office. Companions can later translate the jargon-heavy language of a physician into an understandable language the patient can fully understand.

Medical history. Sometimes a companion can be a useful

resource, calling a doctor's attention to a patient's prior hospitalizations and illnesses. Companions can even call attention to any medications the patient is currently taking.

Serving as an advocate. Very often a companion can operate as a patient advocate, clarifying questions or getting further information out of a doctor if the patient is hesitant to ask. If the information isn't clear, the companion can raise red flags or ask to have the instructions put in a different light.

Translation. Sometimes patients need companions who speak their native languages when their physicians do not.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called friends, red lights called enemies, caution lights called family. You will have flats called jobs. But, if you have a spare called determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith and a driver named Jesus—you will make it to a place called success.” – Author Unknown
