"I did my research online for the practices in Arizona that offer varicose vein removal. I knew I wanted the EVLT treatment and wanted the procedure done by a Physician, not a cosmetic place. I narrowed it down to three Physicians and chose Dr. Sharma for his experience. I could not be more pleased with my experience at Arizona Vein & Laser Institute. Dr. Sharma is a wonderful physician. As he is performing the procedure, he explains what he is doing and is so concerned about making you feel comfortable. As for his staff, I cannot say enough good words. One thing I have learned in my lifetime is that your employees are only as good as you are. Dr. Sharma, you have a wonderful staff which says alot about you as an employer. I spent many office visits with them and every time they were pleasant, caring and professional. I was impressed by the way they worked as a team with Dr. Sharma. Thank you so much!" Joy A.
"I had called your office on a Monday morning to see if I could be fit in for an appointment as soon as possible because of a complication I had over the weekend. Being a new patient and never being seen at your office before it didn't matter because the woman who answered was not only kind, friendly and sypmathetic of my situation, but she was able to fit me in that very same afternoon. I have to say how incredibly impressed I was with the entire staff at this office but even more so with Dr. Sharma and Dr. Hecht. Their bedside manners are second to none. Thank you!" Scott Schrimp
NORTH PHOENIX Charles I. Hecht M.D., FACS Dr. Hecht received his M.D. degree from State University of New York Upstate Medical University. He did his residency in General Surgery at Ohio State University Hospital. He has performed major surgeries at the area hospitals for over 25 years before joining Arizona Vein & Laser Institute to dedicate to the treatment of venous disease.

Lift, Tighten and Tone Your Skin this Summer! We can all agree sagging skin is a sure sign of aging, especially when it’s concentrated around the jaw line, neck and eyes. Now there is a new generation skin-tightening device leading the way in the fight against sagging jowls, turkey necks, and tired eyes. is a non-surgical treatment designed to lift, tighten and firm the skin of the face and neck. It is drastically different in its tightening and lifting ability because it not only tightens skin, but also the deep muscular layers underneath. The same foundational layers typically addressed in a surgical face-lift.
Before
drives sound waves into skin and deeper support structures that tighten existing collagen, and stimulate more collagen growth over the next three to six months. This is the first non-surgical device to combine focused ultrasound energy that visualizes the area to be treated then accurately delivers pinpoint energy to multiple structural layers of collagen. is the first ultrasound technology to receive FDA approval for a non-surgical brow, jowl and neck lift. It is used on areas of the face and neck that address sagging of the cheek, jawline, marionette lines, chin as well as brows and eyelids. Single areas may be treated or full face and neck for a more complete lift. A visible lift is commonly seen immediately following the procedure, with optimal results occurring over three to six months. There are no pre or post treatment restrictions. No down time, surgery, incisions, injections or scars and it’s done in thirty to sixty minutes. Technology is providing amazing ways to stay safely looking young!

Relief is right here in the West Valley Dr. Kukurin was named a Top Chiropractor by the Consumers Research Council of America. He is listed in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare. With over 20 years of experience using acupuncture, chiropracticand science based nutritional therapies, the results produced by our methods have been featured on local TV newscasts, published in scientific journals, indexed in the National Library of Medicine and have been presented Knee Pain at medical conferences at Johns Hopkins and the Peripheral Nerve Society.
Diabetic Neuropathy, Peripheral Neuropathy Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, Plantar Fasciitis If you are suffering from lower back, buttocks and or leg pain or your feet or legs are cramping, numb or burning especially at night, you almost certainly have a condition which involves the nerves of the legs. The largest nerve in the body, the sciatic nerve (pictured in red to the right), starts in the lower back, runs through the muscles of the buttocks and down to the tip of the toes. If this nerve gets irritated, you can experience really terrible pain anywhere along the course of the nerve. You may also experience burning, numbness and odd sensations in your muscles. Irritation of this nerve may produce severe cramping or crawling sensations in your muscles. Of course, your back and leg pain can be caused by a pinched nerve in your lower back. This can be from a vertebra that is out of place, it can be caused by a slipped disc or it can be caused by spinal stenosis or any combination of these problems. Each of these conditions, bad discs, spinal stenosis or displaced vertebrae have very different treatments. Knowing exactly why you have your back and leg troubles is absolutely essential for effective care.
Headaches, Vertigo, TMJ, Migraines, Sinus Headache Neck and Shoulder Pain, Pinched Nerves, Tennis Elbow and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Spinal Stenosis, Sciatica, Lower Back, Hip and Leg Pain
So how do you find results? The answer is called Integrative Neurology. Neurology is the study of the nerves. This allows us to diagnose tough nerve conditions like spinal stenosis, disc problems and neuropathy. What happens next truly separates our integrative neurology approach from anything else available to help correct lower back, hip, leg and foot problems. We have pioneered techniques to decompress nerves, but also use a number of natural substances that have been shown in recent scientific studies to help nerves re-grow and repair. There are no current drugs that can do this. But that’s not all. We combine special electrical stimulation techniques with acupuncture. A combination that has been shown to correct abnormal nerve function and promote nerve repair. There simply is no better or more comprehensive system for diagnosing and correcting the cause of spinal stenosis, neuropathy and other conditions that cause lower back, hip and leg pain and numbness. “When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.”~1 Corinthians 13:11 Welcome to our June issue! This month men worldwide will be celebrated for their roles in many lives. Many passages in the Bible reveal the role that God designed for men. These passages reveal many virtues of a man committed to building a Godly legacy for his family. Here are a few Bible verses to encourage you to fulfill God’s will.
1 Corinthians 16:13-14 Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong. Let all your things be done with charity. Psalm 1:1-6 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish. Titus 2:7 In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, Psalm 119:9-16 Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Blessed art thou, O Lord: teach me thy statutes. With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth. I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches. I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.
Micah 6:8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? Psalm 112:1-10 Praise ye the Lord. Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord, that delighteth greatly in his commandments. His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed. Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever. Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous. A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion. Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance. He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord. His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire upon his enemies. He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour. The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish. Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Until next time, Wishing you a Happy Father's Day!

Local Tech Company Sparks in the Valley Family-owned Marcus Networking celebrates 15 years of success We can all remember the dot-com craze that swept the world in the late ‘90s. A then 17-year-old Eric Marcus decided that he would chase the movement and turn it into something more. He began working in the tech sales department at Comp USA in 1999, which then led to an IT management role at a local 150-employee dot-com startup. Marcus spent the next four years gaining certifications and the technical experience needed to run large scale networks globally. In 2002, Marcus, then 22, took his passion for technology and telecommunications to the next level and started a small consulting firm. That leap of faith would prove to be the right path for the young entrepreneur. Known today as Marcus Networking, the family-operated company focuses on taking the middle man out of tech solutions. While businesses have to call multiple vendors to get help, Marcus Networking prides itself in its ability to offer multiple tech services under one roof. “My main focus with Marcus Networking is being 100 percent client oriented,” Marcus says. “We aim to provide services that will not only bring solutions to any tech problems, but that will also allow these businesses to grow and expand with ease.” Customization is an important first step when Marcus Networking starts working with a business. Finding the right fit to support a company’s technology needs is what sets this locally-owned business apart from its competitors. Industries like medical, legal, produce and nonprofits use different software applications. Taking this into account, Marcus Networking tailors distinct services to that industry.
Based in Tempe, Marcus Networking serves clients in Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Utah and Canada. With 19 full-time employees, the office is tight knit and very much a family affair. Marcus’ father, uncle, aunt and two brothers-in-law work there. “It’s a different feel when you surround yourself with the people you love most in your life,” Marcus says. “I wouldn’t have it any other way. They are invested in me, which means they are passionate about this company.” Marcus Networking serves more than 3,000 people. A typical month for the company consists of around 2,200 calls with a typical response time of less than a minute and a resolution time of less than six minutes. While the numbers represent the quality of work, Marcus knows that the continued growth speaks volumes. “The industry is littered with one and two man shops that aren’t adhering to the right standards. They see client as money, not as people,” Marcus says. “We care about providing businesses with the tools that they need in order to

And it’s this solid foundation that Marcus prides himself on with the company he built from the ground up more than 15 years ago. “The reality is that we are handling the most vital parts of your business. Passwords, secured forms and financial documents—it’s all in our hands. We don’t for a minute forget just how important that is. At the end of the day, we are here to help and protect you,” Marcus says.

Justa Center Transforming the lives of homeless seniors in Phoenix Studies reveal that approximately 50 percent of the homeless in the United States are people aged 50 or older. This number is expected to increase by 33 percent in the next 10 years and double by 2050, according to the National Alliance to End Homelessness. Have you ever considered what you would do if you found yourself homeless in your senior years? Illness, death of a spouse and unemployment are just some of the hardships that result in homelessness. Unfortunately, these situations are the sad reality for many of the senior homeless men and women who pass daily through the doors of Justa Center. Operating in in the heart of downtown Phoenix since 2006, Justa Center is the only day resource center of its kind that serves homeless seniors aged 55 and older. The resource center provides support and services to its members that includes procuring safe housing, nutrition assistance, basic physical health care, mental health counseling, job assessment and training/placement assistance through its Senior Community Employment Service (SCSEP) program. Under Justa Center’s SCSEP program, members work 20 hours per week and are trained by Justa Center employees to help with services to other members. Many of the participants of the SCSEP program go on to become Justa Center employees. One Justa Center employee that benefited from the SCSEP program is Rudy Soliz. Rudy was homeless for five years due to illness and walked the streets for almost three years before learning about Justa Center. When asking Soliz what Justa Center means to him he explains, “I tell everybody it’s held up by angels.”
“We believe that every senior deserves a place to call home and Justa Center’s capacity for compassion and innovative problem solving will be paramount toward our success in combating senior homelessness,” says Barbara Lewkowitz, executive director. In 2016, Justa Center received 60,000 visits, served 35,000 breakfasts and placed 120 members in jobs, but procuring permanent housing for its members is at the core of Justa Center’s mission; placing on average 1.5 people in permanent housing daily. “Our support doesn’t end at placing our members in housing,” says Peggy Beltrone, board president. “We have a 92 percent success rate of keeping people in permanent housing. We’re very proud of our Extended Care program, and we couldn’t do what we do without the support of our dedicated volunteers.” Justa Center’s Extended Care program includes visiting with previous members at their homes, taking them to doctor’s appointments and often delivering food boxes or donated goods. The nonprofit operates solely on donations from private individuals and different faith communities in the Valley. Almost half of Justa Center’s members are veterans and more than 40 percent are women, like Delores Johnson. Justa Center recently helped her find a job and now they’re assisting her with finding a permanent home. “Justa is my family, I love everybody,” says Johnson. “They’re very nice and very helpful.”

In addition to the many services and programs offered by Justa Center, they also have a Veterans Advocacy Program, which helps its members establish VA benefits and gain access to specialist services. Justa Center is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and provides its members with morning coffee, breakfast pastries and a hot meal for lunch. On Sundays they open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Rev. Gerri Bast leads an ecumenical worship service every Sunday at 10 a.m.
Justa Center serves an average of 130 homeless seniors a day and even more are expected this summer. “Last summer we averaged 180 visits a day. Our population is aging and the number of baby boomers heading for homelessness is rising, says Lewkowitz.

WHAT OUR PATIENTS SAY:
“Best medical facility and staff in the Valley, hands down, in my opinion. Highly recommend them if you need help due to chronic pain.” – Nancy K. “Active Life is the most amazing group of professionals I have encountered in all my years dealing with pain. From Dr.s Lundquist & Smith to the PA's, techs, receptionists, et al, these are people I highly recommend and have done so for years. I carry their cards in both my purse and saddlebag when horseback riding to give out when I meet people experiencing severe pain.” – Cindy E. “I’ve been competing in strength athletics since the age of 15 and have been competing at a professional level for the last 5 years. It wasn’t until 2014 that I needed to seek treatment for a patella tendon tear that I received while competing at the Commerce World’s Strongest Man in China. I had only heard about PRP treatments and the great benefits that it could have on one’s injuries - that’s when I found Dr. Lundquist at Active Life Physical Medicine & Pain Center in Avondale, Arizona. The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST), invented and patented by John Chao, DDS, MADG, is a scalpel-free, suture-free procedure for correcting gum recession. During the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique™, a needle is used to make a small hole in the patient’s existing gum tissue. Through this pinhole, special instruments are used to gently loosen the gum tissue. These tools help expand and slide the gumline to cover the exposed root structure. There are no grafts, no sutures, and no incisions needed with the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique™. It simply involves the adjustment of the existing tissue. Dr. Chang and Dr. Svans were two of the first dentists in Arizona and the United States trained and certified as Pinhole Surgical Technique™ Providers. How Common is Carpal Tunnel? Increased hours spent on computer keyboards and digital devices can put people at risk for a relatively common and oftentimes painful condition that affects mobility in the wrist. Carpal tunnel syndrome, or CTS, can cause numbness, pain and tingling in the hand or arm as a result of one of the major nerves of the hand - the median nerve - being compressed in the wrist. The American College of Rheumatology says that CTS may be the most common nerve disorder experienced today, affecting between four and 10 million people in the United States alone. Middle-aged to older individuals are more likely to develop CTS than younger persons, and females are diagnosed three times more frequently than males.
What is the carpal tunnel? The carpal tunnel is a passage that forms in the wrist on the palm side of the hand. It is located just beneath the skin surface. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke says the carpal tunnel is a narrow, rigid passageway of ligament and bones. Eight small wrist bones form three sides of the tunnel. The width of the tunnel is only about an inch. Injury or inflammation to the tissues inside of the carpal tunnel can shrink the space of the tunnel, eventually pressing on the tendons and the median nerve that runs through this narrow area.
The role of the median nerve When compression occurs in this area of the wrist, a key nerve is affected. The median nerve originates in the neck and runs through the arm. The median nerve passes through the carpal tunnel at the wrist and goes into the hand, providing feeling to the palm side of the thumb and to the index, middle and part of the ring fingers (although not the little finger). It also controls some small muscles at the base of the thumb.
Symptoms of carpal tunnel Weakness of the hand as well as tingling and numbness are the two most common symptoms of CTS. The numbness particularly affects four of the fingers. It can occur when 30 June 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
holding a phone, book, newspaper or steering wheel or engaging in just about any activity that involves the hands. CTS also may wake a person up from sleep. There are a number of other compression issues that can occur in the hand and arms, causing similar pain and tingling in other areas. Ulnar nerve compression in the elbow can cause part of the ring finger and pinky finger to tingle and may be indicative of a different ailment. That's why a professional diagnosis must be sought when experiencing symptoms related to CTS.
When to see a doctor If pain and tingling are affecting activities and sleeping patterns, individuals should see their doctors. Various nonsurgical remedies and therapies may help. If left untreated, any condition that affects nerve function may lead to permanent nerve and muscle damage.
The Role Insulin Plays in the Body By MS
Insulin plays a key role in metabolic functions in the body. Insulin is produced in the pancreas of the human body. Its most important function is the way it interacts with glucose (blood sugar) to allow the cells of the body to use that glucose as energy. Insulin can be viewed as a type of key that unlocks the cells and enables glucose to enter. The pancreas senses when there is a spike in glucose in the bloodstream and reacts by producing insulin. According to the Hormone Health Network, insulin also works to ensure the liver stores excess glucose so that it is not actively in the blood. Stored glucose is called glycogen. This glycogen can be converted into fat when it is needed. Insulin also affects other metabolic processes, such as the breakdown of protein or fat. If insulin is not being produced in the right amounts, the result is high blood sugar, or hyperglycemia. Chronic hyperglycemia is the hallmark of diabetes mellitus. Complications of high blood sugar include damage to the nervous system, kidneys, eyes and the extremities. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin. Supplementation with insulin will be necessary to avoid drastic changes in blood glucose levels. When a person has type 2 diabetes, cells fail to respond to insulin properly. This is referred to as insulin resistance. As the disease progresses, a lack of insulin may also develop. Typically, with this type of diabetes, excessive body weight and not enough exercise are the culprits in insulin resistance. Eating a healthier diet and becoming more physically active can help reverse the condition. Too little glucose in the blood (hypoglycemia) can make a person feel irritable, tired or confused. Low blood sugar can lead to loss of consciousness. That is why it is crucial that blood sugar concentrations remain relatively stable. Without insulin, the body could not effectively make use of the energy obtained through eating and drinking. Insulin helps unlock cells so that glucose can be used to its full potential. azhealthandliving.com |June 2017

Break Out of Your Rut: Seven Ways & Reasons to Have an Adventurous Summer Each morning you struggle to wake up and try not to become too frazzled while wrangling the kids and getting ready for work. Eight or nine (or more) hours later, you come home, check as many chores as possible off your todo list, and collapse into bed. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. Even your hobbies and downtime are part of the same old routine: book club Tuesday nights, TV Thursday nights, dinner with your girlfriends every other Friday. So what's wrong with that? Well, a recent CNN article suggests that trying out new hobbies and discovering new interests might stave off memory loss. But also, when we exist and endure instead of approaching life as an adventure, we not only miss out on lots of fun, but we squander our full potential. Here are seven tips to help you wring every drop of joy and excitement out of this summer:
Don't waste the weekend. Set a goal for every weekend to do something you've never done before, whether it's visiting a new state park, learning a new sport, throwing a neighborhood block party, or even just cooking a new type of cuisine for dinner.
Get out of your vacation rut. Is your family going to a certain beach this summer because, well, that's what you always do? Even if your family thoroughly enjoys a familiar destination, consider making plans to visit a new place this summer. Find creative new day-trip destinations. Imagine a 100-mile radius around your home. Chances are, there are more fun places and events in that radius than you can cram into one summer: hiking trails, historic sites, lakes, new restaurants, museums, community theaters, festivals and more. Whether your family is taking an out-of-town vacation or not, plan to visit some of them.
Make a point to meet new people. Attend networking events, get on a new team at work, introduce yourself to familiar faces at the gym, and respond "yes" to more social invitations. Seek out other women. Most of us are so busy and

Do at least one thing to give back to your community. Men and women who care enough about others to volunteer their time, talents, and treasure are the kinds of people you want to meet. from the ways we perceive our world—and we can choose to have an attitude of gratitude. Instead of thinking of what you have to do, focus on what you get to do. Every time you learn something new, receive a new opportunity, or learn a new skill this summer, allow yourself to savor the moment and say thanks. You'll find that your joy levels steadily rise—and that you are more and more excited to expand your world.
Tips on How to Be a Great Dad
By Michael Graubart, author of Sober Dad: The Manual For Perfectly Imperfect Parenting, www.michaelgraubart.com
Few men are 100 percent ready to be a father when the time comes, but recovering alcoholics and addicts struggle perhaps more than anyone else to get fatherhood right and not repeat the mistakes they witnessed growing up. Here are a few tips on how to be an outstanding father:
Embrace your manhood—it’s nothing to be embarrassed
about. In our society, people sometimes make fun of the concept of manhood, turning it into a caricature of John Wayne. In reality, true manhood is the willingness to embrace personal responsibility as an adult. Your child needs a man, not a guy, for a father.
Discipline yourself before you discipline your child.
If you want your child to grow up the right way, you’ve got to grow up first. This means confronting the areas where you may have tolerated your own immaturity because it wasn’t really affecting anyone that seriously. Not anymore!
Anger doesn’t belong in your home. The most damaging
thing you can do to your kids is use anger on them or your spouse. Anger terrifies kids without educating them about the right way to do things. Instead of anger, find another way to make your points.
You will lose every fight with your wife. If you win, you
lose. If you tie, you lose. And if you lose, you lose. So why bother?
Always reward good behavior and good grades. At
the office you can win trips and trophies for doing a great job. You can make trophies for being a “great older brother” or just simply for getting great grades. Everybody loves awards, especially kids.
Your kids don’t need to know everything about you.
Don’t overshare about your drinking and drugging days. It may be entertaining to you, but it’s usually terrifying to kids to hear what a meatball their dad really was. Your kids just want a man they can look up to, not a cartoon superhero. If you’re sincere, present, loving and doing your best, your kids will forgive you for the mistakes you’ll invariably make. azhealthandliving.com |June 2017

Have you ever wondered what causes options for hearing loss including hearing aids, bone anchored hearing devices, and cochlear implants. The device selected is dependent upon the type of hearing loss, degree of loss, how long the hearing nerve has been deprived of sound, and how much clarity is still present.
In order to accurately diagnose and treat hearing loss, a full diagnostic hearing evaluation is required. These tests are performed by doctors of audiology and are not free. Most of these evaluations can be billed to health insurance companies. When a diagnostic test is performed, it shows the big picture of an individual’s hearing loss and allows the clinician to properly diagnose and treat the hearing loss. In many situations, hearing aids will not solve the problem but a surgical device will.

varicose veins? In general, varicose veins are caused when certain venous valves become weaker, which permits blood to flow backward and pool in the inside of veins. However, other factors also contribute to varicose veins, including water retention.
What this means for the patient is dizziness, fainting, nausea and terrible quality of life. Traditionally, the cause of POTS symptoms was thought to be related to the heart, but recent research points to the nervous system and how the brain fails to regulate heart rate.
Read on to learn more about the link between water retention and varicose veins, including what causes water retention, why it affects varicose veins and treatment options for both.
Causes: When it comes to varicose veins, your first step should be to eliminate foods from your diet that may be making you retain water. As a general rule, any food with high sodium content causes water retention. Varicose vein treatment often begins with removing canned soups, pizza, hot dogs, frozen foods, certain salad dressings, cheeses, soy sauce and pickles from your diet. Instead, eat foods that are high in fiber and potassium.
We rarely think of what happens when we go from lying flat to standing. But due to gravity, the nervous system needs to make adjustments to our blood vessels and to raise blood pressure and heart rate. This occurs automatically and is essential to prevent gravity from pulling blood from our Many hearing stores have ads in the newspaper brain into our feet. Q. How does obesity induce sleepdisordered breathing?
A. Obesity-induced sleep-disordered breathing has fat collecting around the neck and abdominal area, putting pressure on the airway as well as the lungs, thus making it difficult for the body to breathe. The most likely candidates are middle aged and elderly males, who gain weight primarily in the neck and abdomen. This type of weight gain is dictated by testosterone. Similar weight gain occurs in women who are entering menopause, have hormonal imbalances or are pregnant. Weight gain has also been linked to insulin production, glucose intolerance, diabetes and metabolic disorders. While metabolic disorders, hormonal imbalances, and physiological changes such as menopause create difficult conditions for weight loss, research shows that weight loss significantly reduces sleep-disordered breathing problems. A 2002 study conducted by the University of Wisconsin and the Boston University School of Medicine identified obesity as one of a list of risk factors that, if reduced or eliminated, would decrease the severity of a sleep-disordered breathing problem. If you wake up tired in the morning, suffer from headaches, snore, experience gastro esophageal reflux, depression, any kind of cardiovascular or pulmonary disease, and you are overweight, I highly suggest a neck circumference measurement and a body mass index (BMI) calculation. A neck circumference measurement of 17 inches or greater in men and 16 inches or greater in women and a BMI calculation greater than 25 is a good indication of a possible sleepdisordered breathing problem. –Dr. Croft Vistancia Orthodontics 623.566.0800 azhealthandliving.com | June 2017

A. When you have lost your teeth, you A. Very! It’s one of the most common A. Recent statistics show that obesity has have many options available to you. A dental implant consultation is the best way to determine what techniques will best suit your needs, your lifestyle and your budget. Issue to discuss: 1. Do I want a permanent solution or would a removable one be appropriate? This is an important issue, as removable options are likely more affordable. However, many patients may not feel as confident with a removable prosthetic. 2. Do I need to have my permanent teeth placed the same day as extraction? Or the same day the implants are placed? Many techniques allow for a healing period between extraction, implant integration, and final permanent placement of your prosthetic or crowns. While you may still wear a temporary set of teeth or crown, each patient has different needs. 3. Do I have any existing dental work that I may want to refresh using dental implants? Dental implants are such a versatile solution that they may be used to secure your dentures or anchor a three-unit bridge. 4. How do I feel about maintenance? Dental implants can last a lifetime and require no more care than the brushing, flossing and routine cleanings needed for your own healthy teeth. Other restoration methods may have special cleaning materials and routines. While these questions represent a good start, there are many more issues to consider with regard to tooth restoration. Q. What is Platelet Rich Plasma therapy? Q. What are some dangers of long Q. Do men get Botox treatments? A. Sometimes the body does not heal on its term cell phone usage? A. disorders such as tendonitis, rotator cuff tears, plantar fasciitis, knee injuries and ligament tears that for a multitude of reasons do not have the capacity to heal. Many times this is due to lack of circulation to the area. The body can do it, BUT it needs a “kick start” to get it going. Your blood contains many valuable proteins that help in healing and attracting stem cells. If you have an injury that just does not seem to heal on its own, it may need that “kick start” with your own platelets. After your platelets are prepared and instilled into the problem area, the healing can begin. You will need to follow good nutritional habits or take supplements and avoid antiinflammatories. If you smoke, you may have a harder time healing, but it may still work. People who smoke do not heal as quickly. Once platelets have been instilled, you should notice a difference over the following 4-6 weeks, but healing continues for up to nine months. A repeat injection may be necessary, depending on the severity of pathology. At this time, most insurance companies do not cover this procedure, as it is still considered investigational. The cost may vary, but usually is approximately $600 per treatment.
billion people on earth own cell phones. We are reluctant to leave home without them. If you talk more than 500 minutes per month on your cell phone you could be causing serious damage to your health. Children with cell phones tend to use them excessively and are a greater risk for serious health consequences and should be protected from low levels of EMFs and radiation. The younger the child the more risk of damage.
The Protect Disc by Miracle Balance is an innovative, compact technology that you apply to your cell phone. The disc is made of a holographic data storage that is programed with proprietary technologies to neutralize harmful radiation frequencies that enter your body while you are using your cell phone. The programed disc is activated by the presence of the harmful radiation frequency. Once activated, the protect disc creates an energy field that has the ability to convert the harmful radiation to a harmless frequency that is safer for your body. Another issue with cell phones in young adults especially is the loss of normal conversational skills that are needed in life. Younger children are being impaired by cell phones in learning language and face to face communication that teaches them life skills and bonding with adults. All screen time needs to be limited for both adults and children to lead a balanced life and should be banned from family dinner time.
Why don’t more men try Botox? Some men are afraid they will look like they have had work done. The truth is that Botox subtly smoothes the moderate to severe lines around the eyes and between the brows. Other Botox uses include treatment for excessive sweating, TMJ (temporomandibular joint dysfunction) and other facial and neck areas. Many men believe Botox is only for women. Not true! We are increasingly seeing more men come into the office. Another concern is often cost. There are a couple things to consider when comparing costs. First, there is the price of the product - you want to ensure you are buying authentic Allergan Botox® Cosmetic. Second, you are paying for the experience, talent and training of the medical professional injecting you. It is critical to have an experienced injector to ensure the most natural results and that you'll still look like you. Other treatments popular with men are Kybella® for eliminating double chins, SculpSure® for reducing fat, such as love handles, and Ultherapy® for lifting and tightening the skin. Many men prefer these treatments, as well as Botox, because they are quick and don't require downtime.
The product is not intended to treat disease, support or sustain human life or to prevent impairment of human health: for self-education and to maintain a status of wellness only.

The goal of advertising should class to test the pH of a liquid? You would A. A home care company can assist with be to cost effectively reach the largest audience possible to attract new patients/ customers. If done correctly, advertising can be a wonderful investment; if done poorly, advertising can become financially draining.
Here are four tips to start a successful advertising plan:
1. Go after your target audience; in the right places! No product or service will appeal to everyone. Do research to understand who your audience is and determine what they read, watch and listen to. Find your market and be everything you can be to that audience. 2. Highlight your competitive advantage; what makes you unique? Find your competitive edge. Too many ads highlight all the features and services and fail to sell their specific benefits. Unless you highlight these benefits, how can you deliver value to potential patients/customers? 3. Establish your image. You have a car full of hungry kids and there are only two places to stop for lunch; you recognize the McDonald’s arches but you have never heard of the other place. Where will you stop? Image counts; don’t lose a chance to make an impression. 4. You have to spend money to make money. Advertising is not the place to cut corners. Doing so affects the bottom line. Successful advertising may cost some money, but that is because it works. – Great Central Sun Media Group 602.335.0771 advertise@azhealthandliving.com

Twenty is an important number in this situation. If your employer has 20 or more employees, the group insurance will remain in the first payer position and you will have the option to remain on the plan after turning 65. In most cases you would want to initiate your Medicare Part A (hospital) benefit while remaining on the employer plan. If you or a spouse has contributed into Medicare through payroll deductions for 40 quarters (10 years) there would be no cost associated with Part A. You could however, delay enrolling in Part B (medical) and postpone paying the monthly premium of $134 or more (determined by adjusted gross income) by staying on the employer plan. Other things to consider when making this decision are:

How to Keep Kids Engaged Over School Breaks Children in North America will spend, on average, more than 900 hours attending school in a given year. The average school year in the United States lasts 1,016 hours, the equivalent of 42 continuous days. According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, many developed countries begin their academic years in September and end them in June. Some, like Australia, feature four terms with two-week breaks in between each term. Others go to school for most of the year - with various holiday breaks in between - and then get the bulk of their time off during the summer. As much time as kids spend in school, there will be times when they are left to their own devices, and during these times it's easy for them to forgot classroom lessons. Sometimes called "summer learning loss" or "summer slide," this forgetfulness sees many students fail to retain all of their lessons over prolonged breaks from school. Studies indicate that students score lower on standardized tests at the end of the summer compared to their performance on the same tests at the beginning of summer. Anywhere from between one to three months’ worth of educational achievement can dissipate during prolonged breaks from the classroom. To help ensure that those hard-earned lessons are not so easily forgotten, parents can help children remain intellectually engaged in various ways over school breaks.
Stick to a schedule. Try to maintain a schedule similar to school, with children waking at the same time each day and going to bed at similar hours. This will make it much easier to get back into a routine when a new school year begins.
Encourage reading. Set aside time for reading each day. All it generally takes is 15 to 30 minutes of reading per day for kids to remember their vocabulary lessons and maintain their fluency and comprehension skills. Children may enjoy picking their own books rather than having a required reading list.
Plan educational trips. Vacations and day trips can be fun, entertaining, and educational all at the same time. Science centers, museums and living history locations can bring to life information learned in the classroom, even on family vacations.
Learn at camp. Many children attend camp for a portion of their school breaks. Look for camps that do not simply baby-sit children, but engage them through enrichment activities.
Take a class. Children and families can learn together by

days, children can do a few math problems to keep their skills sharp. This will help keep learning loss to a minimum. Math workbooks may be available at bookstores, or parents can look online or ask a teacher for a summer to-do packet.
Parents and educators can reduce lesson loss over school breaks by encouraging families to remain intellectually engaged in any way they can.

Children and Allowance
By MS
Teaching children to manage money is an important lesson that can benefit kids throughout their lives. Instilling such lessons may be more challenging for today's parents than it was for the parents of yesteryear because of the reliance on less traditional forms of currency, such as debit cards and smartphone apps. But enabling children to earn a cash allowance can be a great way to teach them fiscal responsibility. According to a 2015 study by T. Rowe Price, children who receive an allowance are more likely than those who do not to say they are knowledgeable about managing personal finances. The study also found that such kids are more likely to understand the value of a dollar and feel smart about money. Allowances teach kids to learn what it is to earn money and how to save it, spend it or donate it wisely. When allowance is linked to chores or some other behavior that requires kids to earn the money, such as getting good grades in school, the effect can be empowering. It helps illustrate the point that there are no free rides and that hard work can beget rewards. Allowances are most effective when parents communicate what the allowance requires of the child. Children should understand from the get-go that they must earn their allowances. Parents can also guide their children into recognizing the smart ways to manage money. However, kids also can be left to make some minor mistakes that can serve as learning opportunities. How much autonomy children have over their money should be linked to age. Younger children might not grasp the concept of spending and saving just yet. Such youngsters may need to learn from their folks regarding what constitutes a smart purchase and what might be frivolous. Some parents may believe that allowances should be saved or spent on luxuries rather than necessities. This way kids still understand that their parents will still provide their basic needs. azhealthandliving.com |June 2017

FITNESS, NUTRITION & SPORTS
STAY ACTIVE & FIT
By Dr. John Douillard, DC, CAP, author of Eat Wheat, www.lifespa.com
Anti-Gluten Frenzy vs. Pro-Wheat Comeback Americans at one time lived their lives utterly unconcerned about the gluten in their diets. But an antigluten craze that erupted in the last decade has become so prominent that it spawned a $16-billion-a-year industry. Gluten became branded as the enemy of good health, bestselling books scared the public away from wheat, and foods marketed as gluten-free popped up everywhere. But it’s time everyone takes a deep breath and reevaluates this whole “wheat-is-a-villain” attitude. Wheat was found guilty without a fair trial and there are risks when we just blindly take a food that people have eaten for 3.5 million years and remove it from our diets. Avoiding gluten is the right move for certain people. People with celiac disease should avoid gluten, there’s no doubt about that. But for the greater majority of people, the anti-gluten frenzy has gone too far and needs to dial it back.
fourth starch and another one-fourth protein. Increase the amount of beans you eat. Of course, beans can be difficult for some people to digest, but one easily digestible bean is the split yellow mung bean. As your digestion improves, you can re-introduce other beans.
Far from being a dinner-table scoundrel, wheat can be beneficial, helping to lower the risk of diabetes, obesity and Alzheimer’s disease.
Drink water between meals. The brain’s relationship with the rest of the body can be a funny thing. When people are dehydrated, the signals to the brain often get translated as hunger signals. So people scarf down an unhealthy snack when they should be reaching for a glass of water. A good guideline is 16 ounces 30 minutes before each meal.
The real problem is that processed foods have changed our digestive systems. That’s why people often feel bad when they eat wheat. But taking foods out of the diet won’t fix what processed foods have done to your system. That just kicks the problem down the road, leaving people at risk for more serious health concerns later on. So if going wheat-free isn’t the answer, what can you do to begin to improve your digestive system? That can get complicated, but here are a few suggestions to get you started in the right direction:
Eat more fiber. Aim for 50 grams of fiber in your diet each day. Make half your plate green vegetables, one46 June 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
Don’t overeat. Perhaps it can be traced back to our mothers telling us to eat every bite, but people have a tendency to eat until their plates are empty rather than stopping when they’re full. It’s better to stop even before you’re full. About three-fourths full is the way to go. Your digestive strength is the key to a long, healthy and vital life. Whether you eat gluten shouldn’t be decided for you because of weak digestion. It should be decided by you based on what you prefer.
Sugar Can Be Hiding in Plain Sight By MS
The health care community is increasingly pointing to sugar as one of the biggest contributors to the obesity epidemic that has affected North America. More so than fats, sugar may contribute to a number of conditions that affect overall health. The scary part is that sugar may be lurking in foods that people would not think of as "sugary." Sugar occurs naturally in various foods, but added sugar, sometimes referred to as "refined sugar," is turning up in many places, increasing the average person's sugar intake as a result. The World Health Organization's official nutrition advisors state that only 5 percent of one's daily calorie intake should consist of sugars. This equates to approximately 30 grams per day. Children should have less - no more than 19 to 24 grams per day, depending on their ages. For those who think avoiding a slice of cake or skipping soft drinks is enough, consider these somewhat hidden sources of sugar, according to the health experts at Prevention.
Barbecue sauce: Grilling time means foods laden with
flavorful barbecue sauce. Many barbecue sauces contain up to 13 grams of sugar per two tablespoons.
Fruit-flavored yogurt: Eating yogurt can be a healthy part of a diet, but not when it is full of sugar. One container of fruit yogurt may contain up to 19 grams of sugar.
Granola bars: These convenient snacks can pack a sugary punch. One bar can boast 12 grams of sugar.
Salad dressing: Dousing healthy salads with dressing may increase caloric intake and sugar consumption. French, Russian and Thousand Island dressings, for example, often have high amounts of sugar per serving size - some as many as 9 to 10 grams per serving. Frozen foods: In addition to high levels of sodium (used as a preservative), frozen entrees may have as many as 30 to 40 grams of added sugar per serving.
Reading product labels is the easiest way to see how much sugar is lurking in foods. While not all sugar is bad, and naturally occurring sugar-based carbohydrates can help supply ready energy to active muscles, most sugar is made of empty calories that can pack on the pounds. azhealthandliving.com | June 2017

How to Minimize Dark Circles Under Your Eyes Raccoon eyes may be a side effect of forgetting to remove mascara and other eye makeup before retiring for bed. In such instances, dark eye circles are easily remedied with cleaning pads. For those whose dark circles can't be swept away with soap and water, dark, puffy eyes can be a cause for embarrassment or concern. Dark circles under the eyes may be a byproduct of various circumstances. Getting to the root of the problem can help women (and men) look more awake and fresh.
Accept genetics Genetics may be the biggest culprit in under eye circles. Some people simply inherit fair or thin skin around the eyes. This can make blood that pools in these areas (from stretched or broken capillaries) more visible. While a person cannot change his or her skin tone, gently washing one's face - paying careful attention to the sensitive eye area - can help reduce damage. Also, getting more sleep can increase circulation to this area and prevent blood pooling.
Treat allergies and sinus issues According to Allergy & Asthma Care of New York, allergies and other sinus issues can cause puffiness and dark eye circles. Histamines, which are released when an allergen is present, can cause blood vessels to swell and inflame. Getting tested for seasonal allergies can help people identify some possible triggers. Alleviating allergy symptoms can reduce the appearance of dark circles in some cases.
Reduce swelling Under eye bags can cause shadows to form and increase the appearance of dark circles. To remedy this, try to reduce fluid pooling in the face. Sleep elevated on a few pillows so that fluid flows away from the eyes. Reduce consumption of alcohol and salty foods, which can exacerbate fluid retention. Cool compresses can be used to massage fluid gently away from the eyes as well.
Apply sunscreen Dark circles may result from pigmentation changes that occur 48 June 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
after exposure to the sun or some other type of UV light. Individuals who apply sunscreen on their faces, including around their eyes, may be able to reduce or prevent pigment changes.
Rely on concealer Makeup can help counter the look of dark shadows and pigmentation around the eyes. Use a shade that is opposite the color of the circles to camouflage them. For example, use orange-yellow tones to combat blue-purple shading under the eyes. Makeup artists also advise applying concealer in the shape of a triangle. That way a person is creating a light arrow that draws attention to the bright part of her eyes. Under eye circles and swelling can be alleviated when people get to the source of the problem. A combination of treating the sources and masking the issue can help. In severe cases, individuals should visit their dermatologists.
A2M – A NonSurgical “Cure” for Osteoarthritis and Inflammation is Here!
Wouldn’t it be great to wake up in the mornings without stiffness and pain in your arthritic joints? Or to take your dog for a long walk without worrying about “paying for it” the next day? Now, imagine being able to have like new joints – without replacement surgery. This is the promise of a protein molecule called Alpha-2-Macroglobulin, more commonly referred to as A2M. A2M is a recently discovered compound that arrests the degradation of the cartilage caused by osteoarthritis (OA) and protects the joint.

Leslie Mann
Hollywood’s leading funny lady makes acting a family affair When a film needs a star that is both a top actress and known for making the masses laugh, they often call Leslie Mann. With more than two decades of Hollywood experience on her impressive resume, Mann has been featured in top comedies ranging from “The Cable Guy” to “How to Be Single.” Married for 20 years this month to director and producer Judd Apatow, the pair seem to keep showbiz within the family as their two daughters have played Mann’s children in many of her films, including “Knocked Up,” “Funny People” and “This is 40.” “Leslie Mann and Judd Apatow have quite a bit of practice when it comes to hitting the red carpet together,” cites a recent article from E! News. “After 20 years of marriage, this Hollywood couple still loves a good date night,” according to another article on E! News. “… As for what keeps the love alive between this famous pair, these two are staying mum. ‘We're not going to give that secret,’ Judd joked to us. Leslie added, ‘We need to think of one.’” According to Elle magazine, Mann has made a steady rise to fame during her two decades in the limelight. “… Mann has made impressive use of the past 20 years, rising from doing off-brand nail polish commercials—‘It was called Nouvage, and I had to dance to Prince's 'Kiss' on roller skates for the audition,’ she 50 June 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
recalls of one of her first breaks—to ‘girlfriend’ parts in the movies of such big-name comedians as Jim Carrey (The Cable Guy) and Adam Sandler (Big Daddy), to becoming a big-name comedienne herself in her husband's films and in solo projects (The Change-Up, 17 Again, I Love You Phillip Morris).” Mann’s recent work includes lead roles in films like “How to Be Single” and “The Comedian.” She’s also done voice roles for animated films, including “Rio 2” and “Mr. Peabody & Sherman.” Much of her work is done with husband Apatow close by. “Mann and Apatow have developed a creative partnership that encompasses everything they do, from raising children to making movies, with their home life inspiring much of what you see on-screen,” according to Elle. “Before Apatow begins a script for Mann, they brain-storm, sometimes improvising with the other actors. On set, they improvise some more, embellishing and improving the scenes in the moment. Apatow works this way on all of his projects, but on ‘Knocked Up’ and ‘This Is 40,’ every marital argument or banal dinner with the kids could become fodder for the film.” According to the Elle interview, Mann and Apatow initially began working together to have more time with their family. A benefit though is also the fact that the pair know each other so well that the films become more realistic. “A lot of times you watch movies about [love and family], and they're not honest. It drives me crazy, because I feel like there's something wrong with me: I'm too emotional or I'm crazy because I'm not as perfect as these movie people in this movie relationship…” Mann told Elle. The couple’s two daughters, ages 19 and 14, seem to be following in their famous parents’ footsteps by appearing with them on the red carpet and in their own creative projects. In addition, Mann and Apatow are known to support several nonprofits, including causes that impact disadvantaged youth and families. azhealthandliving.com |June 2017

Tips to Prevent Pestering Robocalls That Can Scam You In today’s landscape, it is not uncommon to receive multiple robocalls a week on both your landline and your cellphone, even though you’ve registered your phone numbers with the Do Not Call Registry. They’re offering everything from lower credit card rates to free vacations and medical alert devices. It’s not only annoying, but many of these calls come with a high probability of scam. Robocalls are scams run by con artists who are trying to trick you out of your money and they simply ignore the law. Below are must-know tips for putting an end to robocalls:
Register with the Do Not Call Registry. Although the Do Not Call Registry isn’t always consistent, it’s important to register with them to help eliminate a good portion of calls. If you've been on the Do Not Call Registry for a month or longer and still get calls, file a complaint with the FTC. It doesn't take long, and sometimes enough complaints can get policy changed. Report illegal robocalls to the Federal Trade Commission at consumercomplaints.fcc.gov or call 888-225-5322.
Set-up “anonymous call rejection” option. Call your
Block incoming numbers on your cellphone. Most cellphone providers allow you to block an incoming number to your cell.
Download a call-screening app to your cellphone.
phone provider to find out if this option is available for your landline. It lets you screen out calls from callers who have blocked their caller ID information—a tactic of telemarketers.
To help with robo telemarketing calls and robo spam texts to your cellphone, get a call-screening app like Truecaller or PrivacyStar that screens and blocks them.
Sign-up for Nomorobo. Nomorobo uses a “simultaneous
as follows, the caller says "can you hear me," you say "yes," they record your response and use it to claim that you agreed to a monthly service or subscription.
ring” service that detects and blocks robocalls on a blacklist of known offender numbers. Similar to the Do Not Call Registry, it’s not infallible but adds a layer of protection. It’s free for landlines and subscription based for mobile.
Check your caller ID. If you do not recognize the phone number on your caller ID, do not answer the phone. Let it go to voicemail or the answering machine. Most telemarketers will hang up and not leave a message. If it’s important, the caller will leave a message. If you answer and there’s a pause, that’s often an indication of a robocall, and you should simply hang up. Never follow the automated voice asking you to press 1. Do not push any numbers to reach a live operator, this signifies that the autodialer has reached a live number and this will probably lead to more robocalls. 56 June 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
Avoid the word "Yes." A new robo call scam will start
Sign the consumer union petition. Sign the Consumer Union petition at EndRobocalls.org to pressure phone companies to start offering free call-blocking technology.
Check the WhitePages.com. Use the online telephone directory WhitePages.com to look up a phone number you’re unsure about. The site will let you know the scam potential of the phone number you’re checking on even if it doesn’t have the company name listed.
Give out your phone numbers sparingly. Resist the urge to provide a phone number unless it is absolutely necessary. Just because you’re asked for it, doesn’t mean you’re required to provide it.

STAY HEALTHY
aging well By Tony Perrone, President of the Estate and Business Planning Group and author of I Didn’t Know I Could Do That: 9 Financial Strategies That Can Save or Make You Money, www.drophelp.com
Three Mistakes Made With Money and Death It’s the inevitable moment people don’t like to think about – or talk about. Eventually, life comes to an end. And too often when that day arrives, people have failed to put their financial houses in order – which could prove costly for their survivors. Most people know their death will be an emotional blow to their loved ones, but it’s likely to be a financial blow as well. Here are three costly mistakes people make when it comes to money and death:
Giving away stocks or other appreciating assets as gifts. Older people often like to give some of their wealth to their children or grandchildren as gifts before they die. That can be a mistake when it comes to stocks and other appreciating assets. Here’s why: Let’s say you bought $100,000 worth of stock 30 years ago and it’s worth $1 million today. If you sold it, you would have to pay a capital gains tax on the $900,000 the stock earned. If you gave someone that stock as a gift, they would get smacked with that same tax burden. Leave an heir the stock in your will, though and something called stepped-up cost basis allows them to avoid that big tax burden. With stepped-up cost basis, the stock gets a fresh start and the person only has to pay capital gains tax on what it earns after they inherit it.
Keeping all your assets under joint ownership. When you’re married, it’s natural to put everything in both your names. But it’s not the prudent approach when it comes to appreciating assets, such as brokerage accounts, individual stocks and investment real estate. That’s because when one of you dies, the surviving spouse loses half of the stepped-up cost basis benefit. Take that $1 million worth of stock that was purchased for $100,000. If it was under joint ownership, when you died the $1 million would be added to $100,000, then divided by two. The resulting $550,000 would be the new cost basis for the surviving spouse. If the spouse tried to sell it at the $1 million value, he or she would pay taxes on $450,000. If the ownership hadn’t been in both names, the spouse would owe no taxes. Instead of joint ownership, you could title the account to read POD (Paid on Death) or TOD (Transfer on Death) or ITF (In Trust For), which allows the spouse to receive it without losing the stepped-up cost basis benefit. 60 June 2017
| azhealthandliving.com
Failing to plan at all. This goes back to that hesitancy about talking about death. That’s where a financial professional could come in handy. That person won’t bring the emotional baggage to the subject that you do. They can provide you with an objective look at the facts, pointing out what you should be doing and how to go about doing it. One other mistake people make is they wait until death is knocking at their door before they start looking into what to do with their estate. But tax laws won’t allow some lastminute switches you might want to make. And planning under duress and with a deadline isn’t the same as calmly considering your options, taking the time to truly understand them and then acting on them.

Ridesharing Keeps Seniors on the Move Losing the ability to drive and get around is one of the most challenging aspects of growing older for seniors. This loss of independence can result in loneliness, depression and isolation. Often seniors have to rely on family to take them places, leaving them at the mercy of a friend or relative's schedule. Ridesharing services such as Uber, Lyft, Sidecar, and many others can fill the transportation void for older adults and help them regain their lost independence. Many traditional paratransit services (door-to-door transit, often limited to those over 65 and disabled) may be less convenient than ridesharing services, and it may be challenging to find a company that services rural areas. Plus, reservations may need to be made a day in advance, with limited drop-off locations available. That makes it hard for seniors to make spontaneous plans, again taking away some of their independence. But flexible ridesharing services may provide the flexibility seniors are hoping for. Connecting with ridesharing services requires only a cursory education in mobile technology. According to a recent report from the Consumer Electronics Association, 46 percent of senior households have smartphones and 40 percent have tablets. Many seniors are becoming more tech-savvy, meaning they have the wherewithal to navigate apps and websites that can connect them with a ride. And if they aren't, a quick primer from a young friend or relative can stoke their confidence. Before engaging a ridesharing service, seniors should familiarize themselves with how such services work and take steps to ensure their safety. •Many ridesharing services are linked directly to a credit card account. Passengers should not have to pay in cash. If the driver requests it, this should raise a red flag. Report the driver to the service. •Confirm that the driver matches the profile and the vehicle that was indicated on the ride app. Never get in the car unless there is verification. 62 June 2017
| azhealthandliving.com
•Ask for an estimate regarding the cost of the trip and if those costs can increase considerably during the ride. Budget-conscious seniors should avoid services whose rates can fluctuate dramatically after riders get in the vehicle. • Look into Uber ASSIST as another option. Seniors who require a little help to get in and out of the car or those who need wheelchairs or other devices can choose the Uber ASSIST option on their apps. This ensures their driver will be specially trained and is capable of helping with the transfer. Ridesharing services are changing the way people get around. While ridesharing might have been designed with millennials in mind, it has become the new go-to for seniors who are not ready to give up their independence.
Some Benefits of Growing Older
By MS
Many people are quick to think of growing older in a negative light. Although there certainly are some side effects of aging that one may wish to avoid, people may find that the benefits of growing older outweigh the negatives. Here are some great benefits to growing old.
Higher self-esteem: The insecurities of youth give way
as one ages, and older people have less negativity and higher self-esteem. A University of Basel study of people ranging in ages from 18 to 89 found that regardless of demographic and social status, the older one gets the higher self-esteem climbs. Qualities like self-control and altruism can contribute to happiness.
Financial perks: Seniors are entitled to discounts on
meals, museum entry fees, movies, and other entertainment if they're willing to disclose their ages. Discounts are available through an array of venues if one speaks up. Seniors also can enjoy travel perks, with slashed prices on resorts, plane tickets and more. The U.S. National Park Service offers citizens age 62 and older lifetime passes to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites for just $10 in person ($20 online or via mail).
Reasoning and problem-solving skills: Brain scans reveal that older adults are more likely to use both hemispheres of their brans simultaneously - something called bilateralization. This can sharpen reasoning skills. For example, in a University of Illinois study, older air traffic controllers excelled at their cognitively taxing jobs, despite some losses in short-term memory and visual spatial processing. Older controllers proved to be experts at navigating, juggling multiple aircrafts simultaneously, and avoiding collisions.
Less stress: As people grow older, they are able to differentiate their needs from wants and focus on goals that are more important. This can alleviate worry over things that are beyond one's control. Seniors may realize how little the opinions of others truly mean in the larger picture, thereby feeling less stress about what others think of them.
