Spring is in the air! protect your skin in the sun

M

any of us live in the Valley of the Sun for exactly that, the sun and for the number of days we can be outdoors and enjoy it. But it’s important to remember the havoc this exposure can wreak on our skin. While avoiding skin cancer is the primary reason for discussing SPF protection, the sun is equally destructive to collagen and premature photo-aging. Some think only to apply sun screens when heading to the beach or spending long hours of fun in the sun. But daily application of SPF is required to protect your skin from cancer and photo-aging every day. UVA rays for instance are responsible for photo-aging, penetrating deeper into the skin than its counterpart, and UVA penetrates through glass. That’s right your commute to and from work is actually very harmful to your skin. UVB is more responsible for the carcinogenic effects on the skin and causing sun burn. Regular application of sunscreen to all exposed body parts will offer you 93%-97% more protection daily. SPF clothing is also available to cover exposed areas during drive time or during longer exposure times.

18275 N. 59th Ave., Ste. C-116 Glendale,AZ 85308 (602) 843-4040 physicianskinarrowhead.com

Common complaints about wearing sun screen are that they can feel greasy, oily, or may irritate skin or eyes. This prevents many people from complying with daily use or repeat application. These symptoms are usually due to the multi-vowel chemical

agents used in manufacturing. Chemical sun screen agents such as Aminobenzoic Acid or Benzophenones are chemical absorbers of UVA/UVB and offer only partial protection. Other ingredients offer a physical block from the UV rays. These are seen on active ingredient labels as Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide. They are responsible for the white or opaque coverage many are familiar with and don’t like. However, new technology has micronized the particles to be more cosmetically acceptable. Most medical grade skin care lines offer many sunscreens that contain one or both of these ingredients. And with many application options such as creams, gels, powders, sprays, and pads. When it comes to which SPF number to purchase it seems one must have a science degree. The FDA will not allow any sun screen manufacturer to label SPF higher than 50 SPF. This is because the curve of protection drops off after 30 SPF and anything higher is just confusion to the consumer. They must also label whether the product is protective against, sunburn, cancer, photo-aging or all three. So this spring while enjoying the outdoors remember to chose an SPF of at least 30, apply often (every 80 minutes), and apply an adequate amount (a shot glass full). Protecting your skin from the sun is your number one beauty secret!

Together We Can Make a Difference...

“Then He said, “To what shall we liken the kingdom of God? Or with what parable shall we picture it? It is like a mustard seed which, when it is sown on the ground, is smaller than all the seeds on earth;but when it is sown, it grows up and becomes greater than all herbs, and shoots out large branches, so that the birds of the air may nest under its shade.” Mark 4:30-32 Welcome to our April issue! This month events worldwide will be celebrated in honor of Earth Day, April 22. For those who want to make a difference in the world—the best way to start is by honoring God!

1 Corinthians 8:6

Here are some bible verses to guide and encourage you to Go GOD to Go Green!

Ephesians 1:8-10

Psalm 24:1-2 The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein. For He has founded it upon the seas, And established it upon the waters.

Exodus 19:5-6 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.”

But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence; Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:

Leviticus 25:23 The land shall not be sold for ever: for the land is mine, for ye are strangers and sojourners with me.

Psalms 50:9-12

Thus says God the Lord, Who created the heavens and stretched them out, Who spread forth the earth and that which comes from it, Who gives breath to the people on it, And spirit to those who walk on it:

I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he goats out of thy folds. For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine. If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.

Isaiah 55:12

John 1:1-5

For you shall go out in joy, and be led back in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

Isaiah 42:5

Mark 4:37-41 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. 38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”

Until next time,

Thank You & God Bless You for Your Support! Here to serve,

The African Safari Train at Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park! By Dr. Grey Stafford

The African Safari train experience at Wildlife World is like no other and now it is even better with an all-new, larger train and track. However, the best part of the over half mile long ride through pastures are the animals, including ostriches, waterbuck, crown cranes, gazelles and even species considered extinct in the wild, like the scimitar horned Oryx. With tan and white colored coats, these animals are distinctive for their long curved horns. Native to North Africa the species extinction in the wild is due to habitat loss and overhunting. Fortunately, there are thousands of these Oryx thriving in zoos like Wildlife World with plans to reintroduce some populations as resources and safe, suitable habitats allow. HEART OF THE COMMUNITY

By Molly Cerreta Smith

Ideal Energy A Bright Idea in Energy Efficiency It’s about to heat up in the Valley of the Sun and during those hot months, homeowners really begin to feel the impact on the efficiency (or lack thereof) of their homes’ cooling units. When a home’s ac/heating units are not working properly, or are inhibited by factors such as improper ductwork, insulation and other issues such as leakage from doors and windows, homeowners can literally be sending their cool (or hot in the short winter months) air right out the door, wasting both energy and money in the process. But homeowners shouldn’t have to just deal with their inefficient systems. And Alex Williams and Elena Chrimat, co-founders of Ideal Energy in Tempe, don’t want them to. Their company performs energy audits to help homeowners maximize the energy efficiency of their homes, which can help them not only lower utility bills, but make their homes healthier not to mention more comfortable. Chrimat explains that Ideal Energy was born six years ago when Williams, who was working in the solar industry at the time, was trying to understand why two similarsized homes could have such vastly different energy bills. They began to discover that it wasn’t always a failing a/c unit but rather other factors that disrupted the unit from performing at its best.

Williams and Chrimat essentially created the “energy audit,” which takes a look at the entire home’s performance to see where improvements can be made. Of the energy audit process Chrimat, who sits on the board of directors at Efficiency First Arizona, says, “We take a whole-house approach, inside and out. We look at doors and windows and the amount of shading a home receives. Then we employ a ‘blower door,’ which literally measures how ‘leaky’ the home is. We check all the seals, ductwork, perform a general inspection of the a/c unit and then head into the attic where we check to see if the insulation was properly installed.” Chrimat then gives the client a detailed rundown of what needs to be fixed, the cost for the repairs and available rebates. An energy audit can save homeowners anywhere from 10 to 30 percent off their energy bills. More importantly, Chrimat notes that the process can help people feel better because once the ductwork and insulation is properly installed, much of the unnecessary

helps people save money, feel better and become more energy efficient.”

In addition to offering energy audits, Ideal Energy is a team of fully licensed HVAC contractors who are about more than just “getting in and getting out.” Chrimat adds, “We offer more than one service. What we do really

As important as it is to them to help their clients, it is also important to Chrimat and Williams to be involved in their community. Chrimat is part of the Second Chance Team, which handles behavioral assessments at the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control. “We’ve been able to save 90 percent of the animals we assess,” says Chrimat proudly.

Where to Find Autism Resources The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that, as of 2014, autism spectrum disorder affects 1 in 68 children across the country. This new estimate is 30 percent higher than previous reports, which may be indicative of better measuring devices, more people coming forward, or a greater prevalence of autism across the board. Autism spectrum disorder, or ASD, and autism are terms used interchangeably to describe a complex group of disorders that affect brain development. ASD may be characterized by difficulties in social interaction, repetitive behaviors, trouble with communication, and other conditions of varying degrees. The CDC points out that almost half of children identified with ASD have average or above average intellectual ability. Many children identified with ASD require special education services or some sort of therapy. While the widespread knowledge of ASD has made resources more available, not everyone knows where to turn when a child is first diagnosed with ASD. The following are some resources to get anyone started on his or her journey to information and assistance.

The first step begins with a diagnosis. The American

Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children be screened for general development using standardized, validated tools at nine, 18 and 24 or 30 months and for ASD at 18 and 24 months or whenever a parent or provider has a concern. However, less than half (44 percent) of children identified with ASD were evaluated for developmental concerns by the time they were 3 years old. In addition, the CDC's report "Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder among Children Aged 8 Years - Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network" found most children with ASD are diagnosed after age four, even though they can be diagnosed as early as age two.

Pediatricians may be the first to diagnose autism. Should something seem awry during a routine developmental evaluation, a child's pediatrician may refer parents to specialists who can do more in-depth evaluations to recognize signs of ASD. Pediatricians and specialists also can provide a wealth of information with regard to therapists and special education providers offering services for children with ASD. Many experts believe that early identification and therapies can be the most powerful tools people have to make a difference in the lives of children with autism. 26 April 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

Schools may also be a good resource for information on ASD. Parents can contact their local early intervention

programs or school systems for free evaluations, after which parents may be put in touch with educators and therapists who can develop plans customized to children's needs. Schools and parent forums also can be the ideal places to meet and confer with other parents of children with ASD. With more contacts, the network of information increases exponentially.

A variety of resources also can be found online. The National Autism Resource & Information Center has the Autism NOW Center Local Agencies directory available through their site, www.autismnow.org. Individuals can browse agencies by state and find more information about programs in their communities.

Autism Speaks is a premier resource that aims to offer support, information and resources to families dealing with autism. The organization helps people get early access to care, attend ASD events and even advocate for change where they live. Autism Speaks also has an Autism Response Team, specially trained to connect with families and offer information or answer questions. ASD affects millions of people worldwide. Each individual with autism is unique and may require a different set of resources. Fortunately, there are many assistance opportunities available.

Understanding Gestational Diabetes By MS

Many people are familiar with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, both of which are characterized by high blood glucose levels that can lead to additional health problems. Insulin injections, dietary changes, exercise, and medication may be needed to correct the ratio of sugar to insulin in the body. Another common form of diabetes may not be as wellknown as the others may but can be a concern for expecting parents. Gestational diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association, refers to the appearance of high blood sugar levels during pregnancy. Women who have never before been diagnosed with diabetes can experience elevated sugar levels while carrying a child. A 2014 analysis by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates the prevalence of gestational diabetes can be as high as 9 percent among pregnant women in the United States. While doctors are not completely certain why gestational diabetes occurs, the National Institutes of Health notes that some doctors suspect pregnancy hormones produced in the placenta block naturally occurring insulin from working effectively. When this occurs, glucose levels can spike. This problem is called insulin resistance, and women may need three times as much insulin at this time. Blood sugar usually returns to normal after delivery, but treatment may be necessary during pregnancy. Certain women are at a higher risk of developing gestational diabetes than others. These include women older than 25 and those with a family history of diabetes. Excess weight or diabetes during a previous pregnancy also increases risk. Women who have delivered babies who weighed more than 9 pounds also have an elevated chance of gestational diabetes. Although many women deliver healthy babies while dealing with gestational diabetes, poorly controlled gestational diabetes can hurt the unborn child. The ADA says extra blood glucose goes through the placenta, giving the baby high blood glucose levels and causing the baby's pancreas to make extra insulin to get rid of the blood glucose. Since the baby is getting more energy than it needs to grow and develop, the extra energy is stored as fat. An overweight baby may have difficulty exiting the birth canal, and a cesarean section may be necessary. Newborns with very low blood glucose levels at birth due to high insulin production are at a greater risk for breathing problems. Some babies born to mothers with gestational diabetes develop type 2 diabetes later in life.

Gestational diabetes also can affect the mother, who is at greater risk for high blood pressure and preeclampsia, a serious complication of pregnancy. Risk of diabetes in subsequent pregnancies or later in life also is greater among women who have had gestational diabetes. Symptoms of gestational diabetes are not always noticeable. Because gestational diabetes can occur midway through a pregnancy, women are usually advised to take an oral glucose tolerance test between the 24th and 28th week of pregnancy to screen for diabetes. If diabetes is detected, a strict diet that's low in fat and sugar will be advised. Carbohydrates should be consumed through complex grains and vegetables. If dietary changes do not work, diabetes medication or insulin therapy may be prescribed. Women concerned about gestational diabetes should speak with their obstetricians or midwives about their potential risk, as these medical professionals may be able to test earlier for gestational diabetes or begin on health care regimens to help prevent high blood sugar levels. azhealthandliving.com |April 2015

Oral Cancer Symptoms, Causes & Treatments Anyone can get oral cancer, and it is not a rare disease. Oral cancer will cause over 8,000 deaths this year, killing roughly one person per hour. Unfortunately, many are diagnosed with late stage cancer, resulting in a very high death rate because of the lack of public awareness. While over 40,000 cases are diagnosed each year in the United States, early diagnosis is the key to good survival. Everyone over the age of 18 should be screened annually. The visual exam takes less than five minutes and is simple and painless.

What should you know about oral cancer The term oral cancer most often refers to squamous cell carcinoma, a cancer affecting the skin and the inner lining of the mouth. Studies show that once a cancerous lesion in the mouth is nearly 1 inch in diameter, it has probably spread or metastasized. For patients in those cases, about half will not survive after five years. For patients with an early stage diagnosis and treatment, there is an 80-90% survival rate for more than five years.

Risk factors Lifestyle choices can cause the disease. The most common risk factors include habitual tobacco use, with smoking or smokeless tobacco, frequent alcoholic beverage consumption, and exposure to sexually transmitted human papillomaviruses (HPV). These viruses have been the major cause for the high incidence of cervical cancer in women. Recently, HPV has also been associated with oral cancer. Avoiding the risk factors is the best practice to keep from getting oral cancer.

Detection The most commonly described appearances can begin as red or white patches in the mouth, ulcers that don’t heal within 10 days to two weeks, or combinations of these features with raised or nodular areas. Pain may or may not be a feature. Any abnormality that seems to get worse rather than better should be evaluated. 28 April 2015| azhealthandliving.com

Diagnosis and Screening Dentists are generally the best trained and equipped to perform a comprehensive oral examination, looking not just at your teeth, but also at all of the tissues of your oral cavity. Having a regular dental and oral examination at least once each year is the key to early recognition, diagnosis and treatment. A biopsy might need to be performed for suspicious lesions.

Treatment Oral cancer is usually treated by surgical removal and may be combined with radiation treatment and /or chemotherapy. The treatments may often cause problems with oral ulcers, dryness of the mouth, and mucosal discomfort. Such problems are expected and temporary, and dentists are trained to help manage them and assist with recovery. More information can be found at oralcancerfoundation.org.

Are Skin Tags Harmful?

Doctors have long been urging patients to be aware of changes to their skin, which could be indicative of illness, including skin cancer. When performing self-inspections, some people may discover skin growths that look unsightly or give them pause. Oftentimes these growths are skin tags. A skin tag, also known as a fibroepithelial polyp or acrochordon, is a small, benign tumor that forms primarily in areas where the skin creases, like the groin, neck and armpit. Skin tags are usually no bigger than a grain of rice. However, skin tags can be larger. According to Medscape Reference, roughly 46 percent of the population will experience an acrochordon at some point in their lives. A person may have anywhere from one to more than 100 skin tags, and certain people are more likely to develop skin tags than others. In many cases, skin tags are just harmless blemishes on the skin. However, some may need to be removed depending on their location or if any irritation is present. Skin tags often scab over and fall off on their own over time, but they also can be removed quite easily. When removing skin tags, the risk for infection is rare. Even though it is a relatively simple procedure, and one that many people take into their own hands, skin tag removal is best left to a doctor, who will numb the area before removing the skin tag. Ligation is a technique where a piece of suturing thread is tied at the base of the tag to staunch circulation and allow the tag to dry up and fall off on its own. Cryotherapy freezes the skin tag. Electrical cauterization or surgical removal with a scalpel also can take place. If a skin tag seems out of the ordinary, grows large, or changes shape or appearance, this may be a sign of something more dangerous. Consult with a family practitioner or a dermatologist to rule out cancerous skin lesions. azhealthandliving.com | April 2015

CONNECT WITHIN

MIND, BODY & spirIT By Dr. Sherrie Campbell, therapist, media veteran and author of Loving Yourself: The Mastery of Being Your Own Person

Reasons to Stop Seeking Acceptance from People Who Don’t Accept You It is fascinating how often we crave the acceptance and approval of those who won't accept us. It is an unhealthy pattern to continually pursue people who reject us. We do this because we see our lovability as directly related to their approval so we keep trying to be "better" or "do more." We do this so we can approve of ourselves through another person's approval of us, as if their approval finally makes us good enough. The healthiest way out of this pattern is to look at why we deeply believe we need the acceptance of those people. Do they determine our worth? Should we have to prove ourselves all the time only to hear we are not measuring up? If so, we are not picking the right people to have relationships with.

Five realities about people Some just aren't going to like us. In life, we should count on the fact there will be a certain percentage of people we meet who just won't like us. Instead of resisting this, simply accept it. Not everyone is going to like us, and in the bigger picture, it really doesn't matter. Keep in mind when someone doesn't like us it has much more to do with who they are then with who we are. Move on and stop trying to change their opinion. It won't matter to them how great we are or how much we do for them. They will have no problem taking what we give, but it likely won't change if they like us or not.

It is a waste of emotional energy. When we continue to work hard to receive the acceptance and approval we want and get the same rejection again and again, we have to come to a point where we realize we are wasting our emotional energy. At some point, it is best to accept that whoever we are trying to impress is not going to come our way and will continue to keep us at a distance. Let them be. We have to respect ourselves enough to move on and put our energy into relationships which support us and that are mutually beneficial.

It is more powerful to let go. Whatever we force we

determine our own worth. We must invest deeply in ourselves because if we don't no one else will. When we are pursuing people who consistently reject and hurt us, we are going against ourselves.

push away. It is law. When we fight for something that isn't going to happen, we begin to look and feel foolish. Never confuse forgiveness with foolishness. The most powerful thing we can do is rise above the situation and untangle our self-worth from the person we believe we need approval from.

Personal investment means we leave toxic people out of our lives for the purpose of being able to rise to the heights we need to reach personally. If we have people trying to bring us down, keep in mind that, it only means they are already below us.

We have to have the courage to trust we can determine our value all on our own. There is nothing more powerful than the pure acceptance of knowing when something or someone isn't good for us, even when we desperately want them to be, and we can let go.

Others don't determine our worth. We as individual

30 April 2015| azhealthandliving.com

When we let go of people like this we stop participating in their sickness, we leave their audience and are released from their negative influence. We respect ourselves enough to stop giving to these people and move on to those who can love and adore us in return. They are out there and probably in our lives now, but we may be so focused on getting these unattainable people to approve of us that we are missing what is right before our eyes.

Who cares! People are just people. People are people they are not "powers" unless we make them into powers. Let those who reject us make us more powerful. We can use these people for inspiration and motivation to live out our purpose with an even stronger vengeance. We can use our hurt or anger over their lack of approval as fuel for our own personal quest for divine happiness and success in life. We make the internal agreement to never let another oppress us and keep us down. We are our own person and there are going to be plenty of others who will see us and love us for who we are. The greatest gift people who don't approve of us give us is a more defined idea of who we are and who we choose to be. If we start changing who we are to gain approval, we lose ourselves. As we rub up against these people, we can see they challenge us to hold even tighter to our true essence. They force us to choose courage over fear to live out and be exactly who we are, not who we think they want us to be.

Tips to Begin Healing Your Life Neglect. Abuse. Divorce. Addiction. These are just a few of the life experiences that can leave children emotionally bruised or worse, causing some to develop dysfunctional outlooks and behaviors that condemn them to perpetual self-victimization as adults. We not only perpetuate, but also protect the obstacles that stand in the way of our healing and happiness. But there is always a way through, no matter what your situation. There are two dysfunctional people in an unhealthy relationship, and there is an entire dysfunctional family in an unhealthy family system. Healing involves tearing down all those dysfunctional coping mechanisms—fear, anger, denial, justification—and rebuilding your life piece by piece. Here are a few tips for others whose past trauma has resulted in self-destructive thought and behavior patterns, such as a willingness to remain in unhealthy relationships or an overreliance on comforts like food, drugs, or alcohol to soothe painful emotions.

It’s easy to find other people or situations to blame for your problems. Even if the initial trauma was inflicted when you were at your most vulnerable, and by someone you should have been able to trust, at some point you have to take responsibility for your own life. How are you contributing to the dysfunction in your life? The decision to remain stuck in a dysfunctional life is yours. The responsibility to move forward toward healing and happiness is also yours.

mechanism you’ve built to keep yourself blind to your own dysfunctional behavior—the realizations that you’ve caused others harm, pain or even extreme damage will come. But eventually you have to choose between continuing to feel ashamed, which leads to feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness, or accepting the realizations as the information necessary to repair your life. Much like a doctor needs to objectively understand what’s broken to diagnose a problem, so do you need to look objectively at your dysfunction and its consequences to heal it. Then use your healthy guilt feelings, not shame, as a reminder of what you can’t do again.

If you’ve done it, admit it

Build a support system

Look fearlessly at the wrong you’ve done, at the pain you’ve inflicted on yourself and others through your own dysfunctional behavior, and admit it. Only by owning it can you change it and only through change can you heal. Look at the good, you’ve done kindly and with humility Own all that is valuable about you, and build upon it.

No one’s said it better than Einstein: You can’t fix a problem with the same broken mind that created it. Left to their own devices, many people who are convinced they need to change will still seek out environments that support their dysfunctions rather than strengthen their healing. Change is hard, and healing isn’t always comfortable. That’s why people often find their way back to what they know, even if what they know is destructive or deadly. Building a support system of people—whether family or friends, or from a therapeutic or spiritual community—whose perspectives get you out of your comfort zone and away from the dysfunction you know is essential for healing.

Look inward for reasons, not outward for blame

Information, not shame The lessons of healing always come with a choice: information or shame. If you are doing your healing work properly—meaning completely breaking down every defense 32 April 2015| azhealthandliving.com

Q. Why is hearing loss such a hard Q. Can a puff of air in your ear stop migraine headaches? thing to accept? A. The stigma associated with hearing loss can be a big obstacle for individuals who need hearing aids. Some are afraid to take the next step because of how they think others may view them. Negative stereotypes have followed hearing loss for years. In the past, perceptions of hearing loss were associated with old age, poor communicators, social awkwardness, and low cognition. As education and research have become more abundant, the negative stigma associated with hearing loss is changing. Hearing loss not only affects those who are older in age; it affects infants, children, teens, and adults. Technology has helped to identify newborns with hearing loss within hours of being born. In the past, you wouldn’t see a toddler walking around with hearing aids; now they are. Allowing the stigma of hearing loss to interfere with treatment is detrimental to the individual who has the hearing problem. Hearing loss is an invisible impairment. When concealed, individuals become increasingly withdrawn. It can also lead them on a path to depression. Overcoming the stigma of hearing loss is tough. If you have untreated hearing loss, try to observe how it is affecting you at home, work, or in leisure time. Weigh the pros and cons of hearing better vs. missing out on conversation. Identify emotions that hold you back from getting treatment. Get involved local support groups. Nobody should feel alone with his or her hearing loss.

A. Sounds crazy, I know, however, a

clinical trial conducted by my colleague Dr. David Sullivan of Mechanicsburg suggests pressurizing the ear canal with air can eliminate the pain from migraine.

I had the opportunity to study the technique known as the Sullivan Insufflation Method in his office. The results of his procedure were quite remarkable. His research is ongoing, but the positive outcomes so far with headache patients are dramatic. The technique involves gently blowing air against the eardrum (insufflation) using a device called a pneumatic otoscope. Ear, nose and throat doctors commonly perform this technique as a diagnostic procedure for ear conditions. Dr. Sullivan found that ear insufflation, when performed during a migraine can reduce or completely abort the attack. I personally witnessed the effectiveness of the technique on patients with headache and with trigeminal neuralgia as well. The exact mechanism by which ear insufflation reduces pain is still under study, but the method appears to modulate a large nerve center in the head known as the Trigeminal Ganglion. It has been known for years that patients suffering with migraine headache have abnormal function in this nerve center. With Dr. Sullivan’s insufflation treatment, it may be possible to modulate abnormal activity in the Trigeminal Ganglion in migraine and other types of head-pain patients by simply switching off the pain with a puff of air. The technique is safe, simple and virtually painless; I had it done on myself. Yet, the pain relieving ability for migraine and facial pain is remarkable. –Dr. Kukurin Kukurin Chiropractic, Acupuncture & Nutrition Network 623.547.4727

Q. I have two bald spots. Is there a minimally invasive procedure to restore my hair? A. Hair loss affects approximately 35 million men and 21 million women in the United States. More than 40 percent of men will have noticeable hair loss by the age of 35, while 65 percent of women will have noticeable hair loss by the time they are 60. It is estimated that 1 billion dollars a year are spent on baldness treatments. Arizona Hair Restoration utilizes NeoGraft, a minimally invasive hair loss solution that can treat male pattern baldness and female baldness in almost half the time of any other hair restoration procedure or technique currently available. The technology in the NeoGraft is the result of 10 years of research, offering the next generation in automation of hair transplantation. NeoGraft is currently being used in Europe and Asia and is now FDA cleared for use in the United States. More than 6,000 NeoGraft hair transplants have been done in the last two years with amazing results. Many of us with children find that speech development is affected, such as lisping, with chronic clenching and grinding of their teeth. This usually results in premature wear and potential cavities. Those concerns along with crowding, overbites and poor alignment can be corrected most often without braces when diagnosed early. The next time you peek into your child’s mouth you may notice wear, crowding and lip biting as early as 3 years old. This is the optimum time to have your child evaluated for easy steps to prevent and correct what may be a long-term problem before it becomes worse. Do not wait until all the permanent teeth are present to correct misalignments and clenching issues because these children typically have more stable and long lasting corrections without relapse when treated early.

around or behind the eyes. There are many conditions related to the eyes that can be the cause of headaches. If the headaches are related to an ocular condition, the problem can be identified with a comprehensive eye examination. While many times the causes of headaches are not eye related the following are a few types of headaches that affect the eye.

(TMD) related to sleep-disordered breathing? Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) can be very painful and is often accompanied by headaches, toothaches and more bizarre symptoms. Sleep-disordered breathing symptoms can both overlap and mimic those of sleep-disordered breathing. Many dentists consider temporomandibular joint problems to be somewhat of a gray area because the conditions associated with its complex task of permitting the movement of the jaw without friction is sometimes difficult to define and even more complicated to treat. Some dentists believe that sleep-disordered breathing is partly the existence of a temporomandibular joint problem and partly the manifestation of a sleep-disordered breathing problem. The simplest way to understand the connection: the bruxism (teeth grinding) or jaw shifting associated with sleep-disordered breathing (occurring when sleeping patients are unconsciously trying to find the best possible positioning of their airway) may inflame the temporomandibular joint or exacerbate a problem with the joint that was preexisting. Headaches, a clicking jaw, malocclusion (misalignment of teeth), and condyle and disc displacement are all associated with sleep-disordered breathing. However, these symptoms often occur in patients with sleep-disordered breathing as well. Research in the journal Sleep determined in 1993 that nocturnal headaches may be caused by temporomandibular joint disorder, or triggered by sleep-disordered breathing —“with very similar clinical manifestations but very different therapeutic implications.” If you have temporomandibular joint disorder, I suggest you ask your dentist to screen you for sleep-disordered breathing. –Dr. Croft Vistancia Orthodontics 623.566.0800 azhealthandliving.com | April 2015

Q. I have chronic neck pain for more than a year with dizziness, numbness in fingers and discomfort sensations. What could this be?

A. The common causes of neck pain include

abnormal biomechanics (inappropriate posture during daily activity), neck injury, overused of the neck muscle and joint. When you experience discomfort sensation, this indicates the nerve or the spinal cord around neck joint is affected. All of these conditions start with or without neck pain could be referred to Cervical spondylopathy. Cervical spondylopathy is a term used to describe degenerated change of the joints and cartilage (spinal disc) in the neck. Results of the degenerated change usually are tearing of the cartilage, formation of the bone spurs (osteophytes) and thickening of the joint ligaments. These changes can pinch the spinal nerves that extend out of the neck joint, cause pain and numbness sensation radiate to the shoulder, hand and mid upper back. In cases when the spinal cord is affected, patients could feel headache, dizziness, visual disturbance, balance difficulties. The signs and symptoms of cervical spondylopathy are usually seen in different age groups. People with the condition sometimes are told they have arthritis. However, there is usually no inflammatory process involved in the cervical spondylopathy as arthritis does. This is why cervical spondylopathy is sometimes thought to be underdiagnosed. After ruling out the trauma, tumor, serious arthritic change and pathological disorder, spinal joint manipulation is primarily used for treating cervical spondylopathy. There are soft tissues therapies used to manage pain and discomfort. Acupuncture is generally used in different types of cervical spondylopathy. Regular exercise combined with neck range of motion exercise could help prevention of the chronic neck pain.

Q. What is the difference between a

Q. What's that lump on your throat?

A. Any kind of physician may take a seminar in how to perform liposuction, call him or herself a cosmetic surgeon, and open up a liposuction clinic. A plastic surgeon, on the other hand, must complete four years of medical school, five years in a general surgery program, and then at least two years in specialized plastic surgery training.

A. The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck or just below your Adam's apple. Your thyroid produces hormones that regulate your heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and body weight. Although cancer within the thyroid is uncommon in the U.S., the incidence seems to be increasing, perhaps because technology is allowing clinicians to detect them at a much smaller size than in the past. Most cases can be cured with treatment.

Plastic Surgeon and a Cosmetic Surgeon?

Another distinction is that only a plastic surgeon with 12 or more years of general and plastic surgery education may be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The American Board of Plastic Surgery is the only board related to cosmetic surgery that is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties, which is the only body widely respected by medical professionals for medical certification in the United States. When it comes to the safety of your face and body during plastic surgery, and deciding whom to trust with your aesthetic needs, trust a plastic surgeon with experience operating on all areas of the body, and one who lives up to the superior qualifications and standards set in the field of plastic surgery.

Typically, there are no signs or symptoms of early thyroid cancer. As thyroid cancer grows, it can cause a lump on your neck that can be palpated, a change in your voice such as hoarseness, difficulty swallowing with pain in your throat and in later stages swollen lymph nodes. Risks factors include the female sex, for cancer of the thyroid arises more often in women than in men. Exposure to high levels of radiation and certain inherited genetic syndromes. Other risks are a history of a goiter, being of Asian descent and being between the ages of 25 and 65. Treatment will usually involve a complete thyroidectomy. Typically, this is done through a traditional 8-9cm incision across the neck, but at Precision Surgery, we are employing a 3-4cm incision for most thyroid resections, which translates to a 4-5 day recovery period and less pain. The smaller incision also offers cosmetics benefits which traditional surgery was unable to provide. An early detection is key for optimal outcomes.

Q. What is Spinal Decompression and could I benefit from this treatment?

A. Lower back pain is one of the most frequent reasons for visits to the doctor. Nearly 70 percent of the population will experience back pain at some point in their life. It is also the leading cause of work absence and activity limitation in the United States. Many people deal with back pain of a chronic nature, often as a result of degenerative or arthritic joints, herniated vertebral discs or pinched spinal nerves. Such persons often find themselves relegated to persistent medication use to relieve symptoms without any therapy targeting the source of their pain. Non-surgical spinal decompression is a time-tested method for treating lower back and leg pain. The technique utilizes a traction table to apply simple stretching movements to the spine. The patient is initially placed on a motorized table and a harness is placed around the hips. The harness is then attached to the lower end of the table. During the active therapy session, the lower portion of the table applies a distraction force and slides back and forth. The patient may feel a stretch in their spine, but does not experience pain during or after the treatment. Several positive outcomes can be seen with spinal decompression. First, the traction provides an opportunity for herniated or bulging disc material to realign itself. Secondly, the therapy promotes an optimal healing environment for degenerative tissue. For the many who suffer with chronic back pain, non-surgical spinal decompression provides an effective method for relief of symptoms and restoration of function.

Field’s nose is a well-known example.

A definitive diagnosis is made by performing a biopsy, which involves removing a small piece of the abnormal tissue and examining it microscopically. The treatment usually involves surgical removal and may require radiation or chemotherapy. The key to successful recovery is early recognition, and this is best done by a dentist. Your dentist is trained to recognize abnormalities of all the tissues within the mouth, as well as problems with your teeth.

While there is no cure for Rosacea, many conventional and alternative treatments can be combined to control this skin disorder. Oral and topical antimicrobial agents are often used to control redness and bumps. If a patient is not responding to, or prefers not to be on long-term prescription medication, then laser treatment is a consideration. Photofacial and Laser Genesis work well in reducing and controlling redness, vessels, and acne-like bumps. Laser treatments are not painful and can be administered weekly or bi-weekly depending on severity. Photodynamic Therapy using topical Levulan and Blu-U Light is another option for severe cases. Three to five treatments may be necessary and annual maintenance. Laser treatment is a consideration in the therapy and control of Rosacea due to its high success rate.

between analog and digital hearing aids?

A. Analog hearing aids amplify sound by

increasing the intensity of the sound waves received. This type of instrument is commonly referred to as a standard amplifier. It takes the sound that you are unable to hear and simply makes it loud enough for you to hear. There are many problems associated with the effects of living with hearing loss over time, including recruitment and speech discrimination. Recruitment causes the perception of a sound to be intense due to not being able to hear that sound over a period of time. Speech discrimination can occur when someone has a problem understanding particular speech sounds due to their inability to hear those sounds over time. Other problems associated with analog instruments are sometimes due to a wearer’s inability to pick out speech in noise. Digital hearing aid technology allows the hearing aid to “sample” sound by breaking the different signals into groups of numbers. The instrument can process these numbers to make adjustments that can assist with volume perception, signal to noise ratio, and even help prevent unwanted feedback or squealing. Most digital hearing aids are also programmable, which allows recalibration for future use as the wearer’s needs change. This results in a longer life expectancy for the instrument itself. Hearing aid technology is moving forward at the speed of sound. The overall satisfaction rate of hearing aid wearers has improved drastically in the last 5-10 years. – Brian Emery Emery Hearing Centers State Licensed HIS 623.792.7151 www.emeryhearingcenters.com

Q. I would like to change my Medicare

Advantage plan; do I have to wait until October?

A. You mentioned October referring to the

annual “Open Election Period” (OEP) between October 15 and December 7. During this 7-week window, there are no restrictions to changes made to any Medicare plan. Changes made during this time period will be effective on January 1. Outside of the OEP Medicare requires an approved qualifying event that provides a “Special Election Period” (SEP) that will allow changes to be made. Here are a few of the events that provide an SEP. Change in residence, this only requires a move to a different plan’s service area determined by zip code, County or State. Chronic health conditions such as certain heart or lung conditions or diabetes types 1 or 2 will provide an SEP. Not every Medicare Advantage plan offers these kinds of “Special Needs” plans. Leaving an employer group or union plan either voluntarily or involuntarily will qualify for an SEP. Any financial assistance received from the State of AZ such as Medicaid (AHCCCS) or Medicare Savings Plan will allow for continuous year-round open enrollment. Those who qualify for “extra help” from the Federal government to lower the cost of prescription drugs referred to as “Limited Income Subsidy” also have the opportunity to make year-round changes. These are only a few of the most common events that allow changes to be made outside of the OEP. I highly recommend that you contact a trusted insurance professional who can accurately assess your personal situation and offer direction.

FAMILY, KIDS & RELATIONSHIPS

BE AVAILABLE

By Delfeayo Marsalis, Musical Maestro and author of No Cell Phone Day

How to Curb Distraction During Family Time No Cellphone Day I fondly recall a time when more people interacted with others who are right in front of them, rather than staring at a gadget in their hand – especially when it comes to family. Here are a few tips for improving quality time by doing without the ubiquity of cell phones.

Consider a no cellphone day. A monthly “no cellphone day” allows you to fully engage with the people around you, whether they’re your kids, your parents or your friends. Without the distractions of work and spam email, you’ll can have meaningful conversations and simply spend time laughing with the people you love. You’ll have those memories to cherish for a long time to come. If you really want to connect with yourself and your loved ones, plan on a regular No Cellphone Day. Play dates that don’t require cell phones. When I take my 13-year-old daughter and her cousins out for a fun day out at the mall, followed by a movie and dinner, I make a deal with them to leave their phones at home. We’re all together on these occasions, so there’s no concern for safety, and it would be sad to go through all the trouble of spending the day together while, half of the time, they’re preoccupied with their phones. In addition to the occasional outing, we set aside time at home when we can’t use cell phones.

Make dinner time a cellphone-free zone. While food is especially important to any self-respecting son or daughter, sitting down to eat together is a sacred time for every family. Children and adults alike face significant stress and pressures every day in the world outside the home. If you really want to connect with yourself and your loved ones, plan on a regular No Cellphone Day. Play “What Do I Know without My Cellphone? Research suggests cell phones are compromising the short-term memory of children. More and more of us – children and adults alike – rely on our smart phones, rather than our memories, to retrieve information. Exercising our brains with trivia, math, and other cognitive games can help all of us stay mentally sharp. Most importantly – don’t be afraid to be bored! Life doesn’t have to be a sci-fi movie all of the time. Ask your child to reflect on their greatest memories to date; chances are 0 percent that the content of those memories will involve cellphones.

The Hidden & Potentially Harmful Impact of Balloon Releases

Balloon decorations can make any party more festive. Inexpensive and easily accessible, balloons can add some lighthearted flare to any celebration. But helium-filled balloons released in masses at sporting events, parades, ribbon-cuttings, and other special occasions can be harmful to the environment. While balloons can be beautiful to look at and awe-inspiring when ascending to the clouds, environmentalists warn that what goes up must come down. Scientists conducting autopsies on birds and marine animals have found fragments of latex balloons and ribbon. Balloons can be particularly dangerous to the endangered leatherback sea turtle, which can mistake a balloon in the water for a jellyfish - its most prized delicacy. Once animals have consumed balloons, they can contribute to blockages that prevent proper digestion. Whales, dolphins, and fish also are at risk. According to the environmental organization balloonsblow.org, every released balloon behaves differently. All latex balloons, even those that are natural rubber and biodegradable, will fall to the ground as litter, and it can take years for balloon bits to decompose. There are many other earth-friendly alternatives to balloon releases. Luminaries, garden spinners, ribbon dancers, streamers, dancing inflatables, and floating flowers are just some of the less harmful ways to engage partygoers. For those who still desire the release of something into the air, blowing bubbles remains an easy and harmless way to have spheres coast into the sky. Those who prefer to decorate with balloons are encouraged not to release them in large groups. Hand-tied latex balloons with raffia strings are safer than balloons secured with plastic rings and ribbon. azhealthandliving.com |April 2015

First-Time Camping Basics The Outdoor Foundation reports that roughly 40 million Americans go camping in a given year. Typical campers go on five camping trips per year, traveling an average of 191 miles from their home to the campground. Campers include friends on their trips 70 percent of the time, and hiking is the most popular camping trip activity. Camping is a popular activity, but many curious would-be campers do not know where to get started. It can be tempting to purchase all of the gear needed and trek out in the woods to try it. But if camping is not all you expected it to be, you have just made a costly investment in a lot of equipment you are unlikely to use again. Instead of jumping right in, first try to learn as much about camping as possible. Do your homework, learning about various camping styles and which ones you prefer. Does the idea of renting a recreational vehicle sound more inviting than sleeping in a tent? Would you prefer a campground with showers, toilets and other amenities or is roughing it in the great outdoors more appealing? Once prospective campers are able to find their camping path, they can explore all of the possibilities and give it a trial run.

Test the waters There's bound to be a camping enthusiast in your midst. Find a friend or family member who enjoys camping out and find out if you can join him or her on his or her next trip. Take advantage of this person's supplies (you may need to purchase nominal equipment, such as a backpack and sleeping bag) and expertise. Such trips can provide some firsthand experience, and friends can offer advice on the keys to successful camping. It is generally easier to learn the ropes from someone who has experience choosing campsites and pitching tents, and this person can offer suggestions about gear.

How rugged are you? The definition of camping varies from camper to camper. For some, camping must include sleeping on a bedroll strewn out under the stars, while others may appreciate a few more luxuries on their camping excursions, like the running water or equipment offered at a campsite or park. Still, others do not want to leave the perks of home at home, preferring the comfortable living of a recreational vehicle. Nothing can end a camping excursion more quickly than discomfort and not enjoying the experience. It is better to figure out in advance just how rough you want things to be. 46 April 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

Rent before buying Rent camping equipment to test out the gear you have in mind. This will give you an idea of everything from the sizes of tents to the type of cookware you may need. Renting is a less expensive approach for those who plan to camp sparingly. If your first trip inspires a genuine love of camping, then you can purchase equipment. You can always begin with the basics and then expand as you find new gear that will enhance your camping experiences, asking camping enthusiasts and experts for recommendations on everything from gear to campsites and more.

Pointers for beginners The first time you go camping on your own, you will likely be a bit nervous. When looking for a campsite, find a level ground that is high up. You do not want to be rolling down a slope or find that the tide has come in and you're now floating inside your tent. But choose a spot with a nearby water supply as well. You will need it for cooking and cleaning up. Water is heavy to carry, so you do not want to have to transport it too far.

Never light a fire inside of your tent. Keep the fire for cooking and warmth away from sleeping quarters for safety's sake. Carbon monoxide can build up quickly, even inside a ventilated tent. Never leave a campfire burning unattended. A campsite with a mix of sun and shade will help you feel most comfortable. Spending several hours in the blazing sun can compromise your energy levels and put you at risk for dehydration. It is a good idea to have a way to get out of the hot sun. Overhanging tree limbs also may buffer the tent from rain. Food storage is another factor to consider when camping. You will be outdoors where wild animals reside, and a campsite can attract anything from small rodents to larger predators. Food should always be stored in insulated coolers that are not easily opened. Keep the food away from the tent so that animals will not rummage through sleeping quarters for snacks. Store garbage off the ground and out of reach of many animals. Dispose of garbage properly, ideally in covered trash receptacles. Animals accustomed to campsite food may be more daring than you would otherwise expect, so do not feed wildlife, and keep food and trash out of reach. Camping is a popular pastime and an activity tailor-made for warmer weather. But beginners should learn the ropes and test their equipment before investing too much time and money.

Trendy Exercises to Rev Up Workouts Exercising consistently is a great way to get healthy. For those who find their workout routines monotonous, switching up exercises and embracing some of the newer, trendier fitness regimens may be a way to maintain your momentum at the gym.

High-intensity workouts High-intensity interval training, or HIIT, is a concept behind some of today's most popular exercise programs. HIIT combines cardiovascular and strength-training movements into a concentrated workout designed to keep your heart rate elevated. HIIT workouts blend bouts of intense exercise with either rest or low-intensity activity. These workouts seem to promote faster weight loss than prolonged workouts at moderate paces. While HIIT is functional, it is not the best for those who have preexisting orthopedic injuries or serious cardiovascular conditions. But many people enjoy a stronger heart and improved muscle tone from HIIT workouts.

Kettlebells These weighted cast-iron workout tools can be an interesting addition to strength-training workouts. But their utility does not stop there. Using kettlebells during any physical activity will increase the amount of fat burned and can provide a full-body workout. Kettlebells come in different weights, and newcomers are urged to start out gradually and build up in weight as they become more familiar and toned.

Trampoline cardio For those who want to both shake up their workouts and lift their moods, jumping on a trampoline can do just that. It's difficult to be in a bad mood when bouncing around like a kid on a trampoline. Trampoline classes are turning up in some upscale gyms, where each participant has his own individual trampoline. Routines mix in different choreography and small hand weights to promote a fun and effective cardio experience. 48

April 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

Water aerobics Swimming isn't the only thing you can do in a pool. Water workouts are ideal for those with muscle and joint pain because the buoyancy of the water reduces stress on these areas, while providing enough resistance for a deep workout. Workouts may begin in chest-deep water and progress to deeper water for added resistance. Some gyms now offer aqua cycling classes that combine water aerobics with spinning.

Dance and hip-hop classes ZUMBA速 classes have been popular for quite some time. But many health clubs offer additional classes that employ dance to burn calories and tone muscles. Some gyms have developed their own cardio-based dance classes that get people moving to music in a fun way. Routines are fun and fast moving, which may make them feel less like a workout and more like a social event.

Recess classes Adults who want to feel like kids again need only to enroll in a fitness class that borrows activities from the playgrounds of our youth. From walking like a crab to running drills to balance beams, these workouts take school recess and bring it to the health club.

Are GMOs Safe? By MS

The use of genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, in foods remains a controversial subject. The concerns about modifying genetic material in foods surround the uncertainty about the medical implications of consuming foods that have had their DNA changed in a laboratory. One such concern is whether there is a link between GMOs and cancer. To understand such a potential connection, it first helps to understand GMOs.

What are GMOs and why are they used? GMOs are plants or animals that have been genetically changed, but many people associate GMOs with foods, namely corn and other grain products. Genes from one species are inserted into another to create a desired trait. This is known as gene splicing. Plants may be modified to be more resistant to drought or harsh conditions. Other genes may be altered to make plants more resilient and resistant to pesticides or certain diseases.

Most commonly altered foods Certain foods are subject to genetic modification more so than others are. Soybeans, corn, cotton, canola, papaya, zucchini, and other squashes are some of the more commonly modified crops. The International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications also lists alfalfa, chicory, eggplant, flax, potato, rice, sugar beet, and tobacco on its list of GM crops.

Concerns about GMOs The risks associated with consuming GMOs are largely unknown. According to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, researchers have not conclusively confirmed if GMOs increase a person's risk of developing cancer or other diseases. Some experts say the benefits of eating whole grains and vegetables -- even GMO varieties -outweigh the concerns about GMOs, while others are not so sure.

According to a study published in the peer-reviewed journal, Food and Chemical Toxicology, French researchers discovered that rats fed genetically engineered corn or those exposed to the active ingredient in the weed killer Roundup over a long period suffered premature death and developed mammary tumors while also suffering from kidney and liver damage. Researchers fed rats GM corn or gave them water laced with Roundup at levels allowed in the United States. The research found that even limited exposure to these products produced mammary tumors and led to severe liver and kidney damage, which occurred in as little as four months in males and seven months in females. Fifty percent of the male rats and 70 percent of the females died earlier than the rats in the control group. The corn studied was Monsanto's NK603 seed, a variety developed to live through heavy dosing of pesticide. Roundup is a pesticide that plants can consume at levels many toxicologists say could cause harm to humans. azhealthandliving.com | April 2015

Organic Claims Not Always Accurate In an effort to live a more environmentally friendly lifestyle, consumers have embraced organic foods in record numbers. They stand behind the idea that organic products are not only better for them, but also better for the planet. But the claims that organic food is safer, healthier and more eco-friendly may be more hype than fact. Some organic foods are not all that they seem to be, and when you dig for the dirt on "organic," you might be surprised at what you find. The variety of organic products available at specialty food stores and supermarkets that are more traditional has increased considerably. Food purists and environmentalists support this growing trend. Certified organic foods are grown without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms or ionizing radiation. Organically produced meats are from animals that do not take antibiotics or growth hormones to produce heartier cuts. The USDA National Organic Program sees to it that organic foods meet these stringent requirements and that any companies that handle or process organic food before it gets to the supermarket or restaurant are certified as well. However, consumers who embrace organic products might not be getting what they think they are. The term "organic" conjures up images of local produce stands and farmers diligently caring for their crops. However, as organic foods have grown in popularity and the organic food industry has become a multibillion dollar industry, the methods of bringing these foods to a store near you have changed. While consumers may believe that organic broccoli was trucked in from a farm down the road, it actually may have traveled thousands of miles -- negating many environmental benefits in the process. Many smaller organic businesses have felt the pressure to keep up with mainstream foods and have joined the ranks of commercial food production. In fact, large food giants have actually bought out some smaller companies. Many mainstream food companies have their own organic alter egos, which would no doubt surprise consumers who support the organic food movement. Even true organic foods shipped from small farms over short distances may not be able to meet the hype of the organic moniker. Plant physiologist and biologist Alex Avery's book titled The Truth About Organic Foods talks about origins of organic food and dispels some of the myths that prevail. Avery notes that organic foods are not pesticidefree because all vegetables contain about 5 percent of their weight in natural pesticides, some of which may be just as 50

April 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

potent as man-made varieties. Avery also notes that more than 95 percent of conventional meat and dairy products in the United States are totally free of antibiotics and 99.5 percent of it is free of synthetic hormones. Only one sample in 400 violates the antibiotic limits set by the Food and Drug Administration. Avery also states that there are no nutritional differences between organic and conventionally produced foods, which debunks the myth that organic foods are more nutritionally sound. Organic foods also may contribute to a higher carbon footprint. Instead of using chemical fertilizers to feed produce, the use of animal manure may mean clearing out land for grazing and creating its own problems in off gassing and water contamination that has been associated with raising livestock. According to the U.K. Department of Environment and Rural Affairs, a shift toward a local food system, and away from a supermarket-based food system with its central distribution depots, lean supply chains and big, full trucks, might actually increase the number of food-vehicle miles being traveled locally, because things would move around in a larger number of smaller, less efficiently packed vehicles. Champions of organic foods are sure to stand by the claims that organic foods are better. Many organic foods are nutritionally sound and rely on more natural growing methods. Yet consumers should keep an open mind about both organic foods and their commercially produced counterparts.

Ways to Detox Naturally By Justine SanFilippo, MS, CHC, author of Lose Your Inches Without Losing Your Mind!

Detoxing: What is it? We’ve heard of juice fasts, master

cleanses, detoxing supplements and juicing retreats. Why detox? Detoxing helps the body remove excess toxins. Toxins can come from the environment, from chemicals in foods and beverages, smoking, alcohol and other unhealthy habits. Some people will go to extreme lengths to detox the body in a short period. Toxins are stored in the fat cells, so when a person detoxes, the fat cells can shrink. There could be many unpleasant side effects to detoxing such as headaches, nausea, muscle cramps, feeling irritable, fatigue, dizziness and rashes.

How to Naturally Detox. Rather than going on a crazy detox, consider helping your body detox naturally by making smart food and beverage choices. Every single day, the body detoxes naturally through the liver, kidneys, intestines, lungs and skin. Eating organic and natural fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, lean proteins, and unprocessed foods help the body be more efficient. Sweating through exercise helps the detox process as well. Other ways to naturally detox are: · Drink enough water – aim for at least 64 ounces a day (8 cups) · Eliminate or reduce beverages like sodas (both regular and diet) and alcohol · Reduce caffeine consumption – caffeine can cause dehydration, which can lead to water retention · Add a wedge of lemon or lime to your water · Have a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar a day (improves digestion and promotes alkalinity – get the apple cider vinegar with the “mother” in it) · Eat enough fiber (28g/day for women and 35g/day for men) · Add more dark, leafy greens to your diet such as kale, Swiss chard, and spinach · Drink herbal teas, such as decaf green tea · Watch the sodium – too much sodium can cause water retention and bloating azhealthandliving.com | April 2015

Claire Danes Recently, news that season five of the hit series Homeland would debut this fall made international headlines and – as usual – all eyes were on its star Claire Danes. The New York-based actress is used to the pressure though; she has been in the spotlight for decades. Winner of multiple Emmy, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Awards, Danes seamlessly manages to blend career success with motherhood and giving back to causes she cares about. How does the famous mom of one do it? Danes recently revealed to PEOPLE Magazine that her toddler son is a mainstay on the set of Homeland, helping her to balance work and home life. “He’s the Homeland baby,” Danes told the magazine. “I was pregnant with him filming. Third season, he was five months. I have so many photos of him in various stages of development in Carrie Mathison’s chair.” In addition to Homeland, Danes has led an impressive career in television, film, and theater. Major roles have included playing Temple Grandin in the HBO made for TV film of the same name and portraying Angela Chase in My So-Called Life. At 35years-young, Danes has been involved in the entertainment industry since childhood.

As much as she’s worked hard for career success, achieving an education was also important to Danes. According to Biography.com, in 1998, she put her acting career on hiatus to attend Yale University. "I needed to find myself," she explained to the website. "I had played so many roles but I didn't really know who I was." Lucky for her fans, Danes continued to act after earning her degree. While she loves her work, she also loves her roles as mom and wife to Hugh Dancy, an English actor and model. “Motherhood is amazing,” she says to PEOPLE Magazine. In addition to giving her all to her family and career, Danes does her best to give back to charity as well. She, along with her mom, is a long-time supporter of non-profit Afghan Hands. “Afghan Hands teaches skills to help Afghan widows gain independence, literacy, and livable wages. At our centers in and around Kabul, women learn to create embroidered shawls and scarves, and their exquisite embroidery connects them to a wider world,” according to the charity’s website, afghanhands.org. “Claire Danes has been Afghan Hands' longest and most loyal supporter,” the website continues. “Her unwavering belief in the possibility of empowering even the most disadvantaged and disenfranchised has been helping the women of Afghan Hands to transform their lives. Claire's devotion has inspired her mother, artist, and designer Carla Danes, to collaborate and create a modern and luxurious line of shawls to further support our cause.” With season five of Homeland currently taping, Danes is set to continue to have fans old and new watching for new episodes this fall. How to Save on Your Next Flight The cost of a flight influences many a potential traveler's decision to stay home or pack a bag and head for the airport. Finding an affordable flight is anything but a science. Airlines adjust the prices of flights in real-time, meaning a flight that's affordable right now might be considerably more expensive just a few hours from now. But no matter how sophisticated the software used by airlines to determine flights costs can be, there are still ways for budget-conscious travelers to spend less on their next flight.

Check every day. Once you have nailed down a date for your trip, begin looking for flights that fit into your budget. Do so each day until you find a flight. It might seem like hard work, but such a commitment can mean the difference between booking an affordable flight and staying home. Clear your browser's cookies before beginning your search. Airlines and popular travel websites track how many times you visit their websites, and that allows them to offer different deals depending on your searches. For example, the airline can recognize if you have visited its site 10 times in the last two weeks, and that will influence the offers that ultimately appear on your computer screen when searching for a flight. But erasing your Internet history and clearing your browser's cookies before beginning your daily search can help ensure you're seeing the airline's best offers, and not just the offers geared to you. Expand your search to different days and/or airports. If you're willing to be flexible, then chances are you will find an affordable flight. Flying on Fridays and Sundays will likely cost you the most money, while Tuesdays and Wednesdays tend to be the most affordable days to fly. If you plan to fly Thursday but aren't having much luck finding an affordable flight, then consider flying Wednesday, when less people tend to fly and airlines lower prices in order to fill seats. 56 April 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

When searching for affordable flights, it's also important to consider additional airports. If you are willing to fly into nearby airports instead of just your local airport, you will have more and potentially less expensive flights to choose from.

Fly on different airlines. If an affordable round-trip flight with agreeable flight times has proven elusive, then consider breaking up your itinerary and booking separate one-way flights rather than one round-trip flight. This enables you to mix and match your itinerary so you can fly at the times you want to fly for the price you want to pay. Mixing and matching between airlines won't always produce a more affordable flight, but it does provide you with some more freedom to choose your flight times than booking with just one airline. Use an online flight finder. The Internet has made it easier than ever before to book affordable travel, and budget-conscious travelers can use that to their advantage. Such sites can take the legwork out of finding affordable flights, giving travelers more time to plan their trips.

Is Bankruptcy Your Best Option? By MS

The decision to file for bankruptcy is never easy. A last resort for people struggling financially, bankruptcy is an option for certain people who are unable to pay their outstanding debts. The decision of whether or not to file for bankruptcy is more complicated than some people may know. Bankruptcy won't wipe your financial slate clean, and it can have a lasting impact on your credit rating that can make it difficult to get back on your financial feet down the road. Therefore, before filing for bankruptcy, it's best that men and women consider the following factors so they make the most informed decision possible.

Eligibility. There are rules regarding eligibility to file for bankruptcy. Simply being in debt does not make a personal eligible to file for bankruptcy. Income is one of the factors that determine bankruptcy eligibility. People who have sufficient income to pay their debts often do not qualify for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which is the type of bankruptcy wherein a trustee can cancel an individual's debts. History is also considered when determining eligibility, as men and women who have received a bankruptcy discharge in their recent past are typically ineligible to file again.

Financial outlook. Bankruptcy stays on your credit

report for years, which can make it difficult to rent a new apartment or secure a bank loan for a new home or automobile. Even if you are able to secure such loans, expect the interest rate to be significantly higher if you have a bankruptcy in your recent past. So before filing for bankruptcy, consider your financial outlook for the years ahead. For example, if you are on the cusp of graduating college or landing a more lucrative job, then you may want to be patient and persevere through your current financial struggles rather than make a decision that will have a negative impact on your finances for years to come.

Types of debt. Even if a judge discharges your debt, that does not necessarily mean you won't still have debts to pay. Bankruptcy only discharges unsecured debt, which includes credit card balances and medical bills. Secured debt, such as student loans and child support that is in arrears, must still be paid even after bankruptcy has been discharged. If secured debt is the albatross hanging over your head, then you will need to find another way aside from bankruptcy to solve your financial problems.

Guilt. Though it may sound silly to people buried in

financial debt, some men and women who file for bankruptcy are ashamed when their bankruptcy is discharged. Guilt about not paying your bills is a very really thing, so don't be quick to discount the emotional toll that filing for bankruptcy can take on you. Filing for bankruptcy can help men and women who are struggling financially get back on the right track. But bankruptcy is not the best solution for everyone. azhealthandliving.com | April 2015

Tips for Retirees Traveling Abroad Men and women often dream of jet setting around the world when they retire. Traveling the globe without worrying about timelines or what's going on back at the office, is something many retirees reward themselves with after a life of hard work. As liberating as world travel can be, retirees still must exercise caution when traveling abroad. The following are a few safety tips for retirees who are ready to make their dream retirements a reality by setting off for parts unknown.

Stay in touch. Escapism is a big part of the attraction of travel for travelers young and old. But while you may want to avoid contact with the outside world on your travels, it's still necessary to stay in touch with your loved ones. Retirees who plan to take extended trips overseas should purchase an international mobile phone plan that allows them to use their phones. A quick text message to a son or daughter back home is all it takes to let your family know you are safe and having the time of your life. Work out a communication plan with your loved ones back home before departing, agreeing to contact them via phone call, email or Skype at least once per week for the duration of your trip. This is a good way to share your experiences and help your relatives rest easy knowing that you are safe. Don't store all of your important documents in one place. When traveling overseas, it can be convenient to keep important items like traveler's checks, credit cards, passports and identification in one place. However, storing all of your sensitive documents or financial items in one place is very risky, as a lost or stolen bag can leave you without identification or access to your funds. When traveling, couples should carry their own passports on their persons and split up credit cards and traveler's checks. This way you still have access to your funds, and one of you still has identification should items be lost or stolen. 60

Do your homework. Unplanned day trips are common among travelers who have been traveling for long periods. While such jaunts can add an element of spontaneity to a trip, they also can be quite dangerous if travelers have not done their homework on a particular destination. You do not want to end up in a place where tourists are not welcome or frequent targets of criminals. In addition, you don't want to visit a city or town and know nothing of its customs or etiquette. For example, locals may react negatively to visitors who have ignored accepted local standards for attire. You can still make spontaneous trips, but make sure you gather some background information, be it from the Internet, locals where you are currently staying or the hotel concierge, on a given locale and its customs before visiting.

Make sure your health will not be compromised. Retirees cannot travel in the same manner they did in the carefree days of their youth. Before traveling abroad, visit your physician and get a full physical. Refill any medications you will need during your trip, and speak with your physician about how to handle any medical emergencies while overseas. Carry your physician's name and telephone number with you at all times, so local medical professionals can contact him or her should you experience a medical emergency. Once you have arrived at your destination, it's important that you continue to prioritize your health. Make sure the water is safe to drink before taking a sip, and investigate local cuisine to ensure it won't enflame any existing medical conditions you may have. The quality of medical care varies greatly across the globe, so you must prioritize your health whenever leaving the country and avoid anything that might put your health in jeopardy.

Change Your Thoughts. Change Your Words. Change Your World. Sponsored by

Travel with friends or family if possible. If you have friends or family who also are retirees with time on their hands, organize a group trip abroad. Groups are less likely to be targeted by criminals than couples, and overseas trips with friends or family members can make trips overseas that much more memorable and enjoyable. Overseas travel is a popular goal of men and women on the verge of retirement or those who have already called it a career. But safety must remain a priority when traveling abroad.

Travel Benefits for Seniors One of the best things about aging is being able to enjoy the fruits of your labor without as many obligations as you might have had when you were a younger adult. For example, many men and women have a lot more freedom to travel once they turn 50. Many of today's older adults have a wealth of discretionary time, and those who focused on retirement planning from an early age have the money to fund a recreational lifestyle. Travel companies and other businesses understand that seniors are valuable customers and are rolling out the red carpet with a bevy of discounts and perks. AARP Services, Inc. has long been a trusted resource in senior-based information and resources. The organization continues to broker relationships with various companies to arrange deals on travel-related services and products for older men and women. Members of AARP can link directly to deals through the organization's website. In addition to companies that work with AARP, many other travel companies have discounts or other perks available to men and women over 50. All consumers need to do is inquire about such benefits. Here are some other ways to secure deals on travel and other services.

Do some networking. Fellow seniors who log in to chat rooms or who are members of social clubs may have the inside scoop on age-based travel deals. Learn the ropes from others who have been there before you and take notes on which companies offer the best deals.

Read the fine print. Understand the details of senior discounts and compare them to other promotions offered to anyone, regardless of age. You may be able to get a better deal or combine offers if you're not locked into a senior plan. Also, check the dates when deals are valid to ensure you can travel when you want to.

Always carry proof of age. Whether it is a driver's license, AARP card, passport or birth certificate, carry proof of your age at all times. You do not want to miss a discount because you cannot verify you are 50 or older. Though being mistaken as younger could be a boost to your ego, it will not benefit your bottom line. 62

April 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

Explore airline perks. Men and women 55 and older may be eligible for "golden-agers" discounts at major airlines. Such deals are not typically advertised, so you may need to speak with an airline representative to secure the discount. Seniors also can request special services, such as baggage assistance, priority seating, and a ride to the gate, at the airport.

Try negotiating with vendors. If you cannot find a senior discount, consider negotiating with vendors for deals. Local hotels or businesses may prove more flexible than national chains. It never hurts to ask for a senior discount.

Embrace flexibility in scheduling. Unlike students or business travelers, seniors tend to have freedom with regard to the days of the week when they can travel. You have the flexibility to go and come as you please without having to coordinate with vacation time or school breaks. Use this to your advantage and travel during off-peak times when crowds will be small and rates may be lower. Don't feel down if you're approaching another milestone birthday. Entering into your golden years gives you access to a variety of perks and discounts that can save you time and money on travel.

Travel Tips for Seniors with Medical Conditions The opportunity to travel is one of the best perks of retirement. Even men and women who are only semiretired have more freedom to travel than those who are still working full time. But they should take more precautions when traveling, thanks in large part to medical conditions. Many men and women over 50 have medical conditions that may require they take medication and/or visit their physicians somewhat regularly. For those who want to travel need not let their health prevent them from seeing the world. The following are a few travel tips for men and women with medical conditions.

Speak with your health care provider before any trips. Whether you are about to embark on an overseas adventure or just spend a couple of weeks visiting your grandchildren, speak to your health care provider in advance of your trip. Health care providers may recommend certain vaccinations to men and women traveling abroad, and providers also can explain coverage and what to do in case of a medical emergency while away from home.

Refill your prescriptions. Men and women who must

Keep medications in their original containers. Some

take medication should refill their prescriptions before traveling away from home. Doing so ensures you will have enough medication to last your trip. When filling a prescription, explain to your pharmacist and/or physician that you are about to travel and tell them where you will be going. They may recommend you avoid certain foods native to your destination, or they may give you the greenlight to indulge in the local cuisine.

men and women find it easier to remember to take their medications if they transfer pills from their original containers into pill organizers. Such devices can be very convenient at home, but they make create problems when traveling through customs or even on domestic flights. Pills can always be transferred to organizers upon your arrival at your destination; just make sure they are placed back into their original containers before you return home.

Carry a list of your medications and medical conditions with you when traveling. Before traveling, make a detailed list of the medications you take and why you take them. The list should include dosage and the names, both generic and brand name, of the medications you take. Include any past medical conditions, such as a heart attack you have had as well. Carry this list with you when traveling. In case of emergency, the list will alert responding medical professionals to any current or past medical conditions you have so they can better treat you.

Drink plenty of water on flights. Airplane cabins can be very dry, which can exacerbate dry mouth that results from taking medication. When boarding a flight, speak to the flight attendant and explain that you need some extra water so you can stay hydrated and avoid irritating dry mouth that may result from your medication. If you must take medication while on your flight, don't be afraid to ask the flight attendant for a fresh glass of water and even a light snack if you need to eat something with your medicine. azhealthandliving.com | April 2015

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called friends, red lights called enemies, caution lights called family. You will have flats called jobs. But, if you have a spare called determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith and a driver named Jesus—you will make it to a place called success.” – Author Unknown
