"I did my research online for the practices in Arizona that offer varicose vein removal. I knew I wanted the EVLT treatment and wanted the procedure done by a Physician, not a cosmetic place. I narrowed it down to three Physicians and chose Dr. Sharma for his experience. I could not be more pleased with my experience at Arizona Vein & Laser Institute. Dr. Sharma is a wonderful physician. As he is performing the procedure, he explains what he is doing and is so concerned about making you feel comfortable. As for his staff, I cannot say enough good words. One thing I have learned in my lifetime is that your employees are only as good as you are. Dr. Sharma, you have a wonderful staff which says alot about you as an employer. I spent many office visits with them and every time they were pleasant, caring and professional. I was impressed by the way they worked as a team with Dr. Sharma. Thank you so much!" Joy A.

"I had called your office on a Monday morning to see if I could be fit in for an appointment as soon as possible because of a complication I had over the weekend. Being a new patient and never being seen at your office before it didn't matter because the woman who answered was not only kind, friendly and sypmathetic of my situation, but she was able to fit me in that very same afternoon. I have to say how incredibly impressed I was with the entire staff at this office but even more so with Dr. Sharma and Dr. Hecht. Their bedside manners are second to none. Thank you!" Scott Schrimp

Freeze Fat Away for the

New Year! For many aging men and women, localized fat layers can be very difficult to “work off. Even with a regular exercise regimen and strict dietary factors, areas such as love handles, abdominal fat and back fat can be stubborn to contour. Surgical liposuction may not be an option for many people due to cost, down time or health issues. Now there is another option, is a breakthrough, non-invasive procedure that uses cooling technology that eliminates fat without surgery. That’s right, similar to liposuction; the fat cells are eliminated resulting in fewer fat cells all together. Using science developed by Harvard scientist and technology by Zeltiq, induces selective fat layer reduction without any damage to overlying skin. Once the fat cells are affected by the cooling, they are eliminated from the body over the course of the next 90 days. There is no subsequent change in blood lipid levels following the procedure. is completely non-invasive; there is no cutting, no needles and no anesthesia necessary. The procedure begins with the device being attached to the area of concern with a suction sensation, and then a cold sensation is felt for the first few minutes. The area will feel either numb or cold for the remainder of the hour. During the procedure patients typically read, watch a movie, use electronic devices, listen to music or relax. More than one area may be treated in the same appointment time. is FDA cleared for the abdomen. It is proven to be safe and effective. Studies show that properly selected patients showed significant fat layer reduction. There may be some minor temporary discomfort following the procedure. Your provider will discuss more on what to expect during and following the procedure. At consultation, your provider will determine if you are a good candidate and number of sessions that will be required for desired results and contour. Each patient is individually assessed to determine number of treatments and expectations. Most patients require one to two treatments and see noticeable reduction of fat in the treated area after one visit. Some individuals may appreciate more fat reduction with additional treatments. The cost of the procedure ranges depending on number of treatments and number of areas being treated. Studies show the treated fat cells are permanently eliminated. Call now for an appointment to reduce those love handles or other problem areas for the New Year!

Together We Can Make a Difference...

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. ”~Jeremiah 29:11 Welcome to our January Issue. This New Year, commit to a better relationship with God—and trust His plans for you! Life is too short to go your own way! Begin the New Year meditating on these encouraging Bible verses chosen to inspire a better relationship with God and a deeper commitment to living!

Proverbs 16:9

Matthew 6:33-34 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Hebrews 11:1

A man’s heart plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Psalm 16:11

Romans 8:28

You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

Colossians 3:23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men,

Psalm 146:2 While I live I will praise the Lord; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.

1 Corinthians 13:1-3 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.

Mark 8:34-35 When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.

Joshua 1:8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Proverbs 10:22 The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, And He adds no sorrow with it.

James 1:25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does. Until next time, Wishing you and your family a Happy New Year filled with many blessings!

A1 Garage Door Services Expands A1 Garage Door Services owner and entrepreneur Tommy Mello exhibits the same reliability, professionalism and attention to detail that have helped A1 thrive since he first purchased the highly successful company back in 2007. A decision made while wrapping up his MBA at University of Arizona, Mello’s financial and professional investment in the business has since allowed it to grow from a small, struggling operation into a thriving, successful full-scale service business readying for regional and national expansion. Despite purchasing A1 Garage Door Services during the economic downturn, Mello’s fierce dedication, financial savviness, and steadfast entrepreneurial spirit allowed it to prosper while so many others were folding. By focusing on reinvesting profits, hiring highly skilled personnel and paying employees 20 percent more than his industry competitors, Mello was able to successfully secure a loyal and long-term workforce that ensures both dedication to the company and career longevity. And if A1’s stellar rankings on numerous consumer-review sites are any indication, Mello’s somewhat unconventional business methods, affordable garage door solutions, and heavily customer-centric focus aren’t going unnoticed. The business currently boasts a perfect five-star rating on Yelp, an A rating with the Better Business Bureau and an additional A rating on Angie’s list, among other top honors from numerous national benchmark organizations relied upon to gauge business performance. Not one to rest on his laurels, Mello’s goals for the future are plentiful. Up next for the entrepreneur is a regional and national expansion, he says. He recently opened up shop in Milwaukee and has plans to expand to Las Vegas and other key markets in the near future. “A customer should never be sold, they should be educated,” he says. His new software 3D Service Pro allows customers to see how the door works with images and 3D animations, helps remind customers for annual service, and covers the business from negligence by getting the customer awareness signature. Mello describes this as a small-business owner’s dream software. While most business owners would be content with running a thriving, nationally expanding business and designing and implementing a new software program, Mello is not most business owners. After hearing that almost 10 percent of all 14 Janaury 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

burglars access homes through garages, he used his industry knowledge to create something called Garage Door Armor, which is a patent-pending security product designed to put a serious dent in the more than 2 million burglaries that occur on U.S. soil each year. “The Arizona Department of Public Safety received more than 45,500 burglary calls in 2013 alone,” Mello says of what spurred him to devise the Garage Door Armor. “Forcible entry was used in more than 57 percent of those cases.” Though much of his attention is devoted to A1’s expansion and spreading the word about his innovative new products, Mello still finds time to give back to the community he credits for much of his success. He recently awarded an area student a $1,000 scholarship after launching a contest tasking high school and college students with creating an inventive approach to marketing his long-running, although not entirely scintillating, garage door repair service. He plans to continue to implement scholarship opportunities for more local students in the coming years. Photos Courtesy of A1 Garage Door Services

Visit the Penguin Chicks this New Year at Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park By Dr. Grey Stafford

Often associated with the holiday season, no species of penguin actually lives at the North Pole. In fact, all penguin species are native to the Southern Hemisphere, not the northern. Many, like the black-footed or African penguins are found in temperate or even tropical regions. As recently as 100 years ago, there were tens of thousands of African penguins nesting along the coastal areas of southern Africa. Today, there are only a few thousand breeding pairs left due largely to habitat loss, ocean pollution, and loss of prey due to overfishing. In 2015, the Wildlife World aquarium team was quite successful in raising a new generation of endangered penguin chicks. Be sure to check them out on display from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Wildlife World! The Walk On! Kids Cooking Challenge Calling all foodies – kid chefs wanted for healthy cooking contest

For the sixth consecutive year, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona is looking for the next great kid chef who can create a delicious and healthy side dish recipe. The Walk On! Kids Cooking Challenge is part of the company’s annual Walk On! Challenge, which has been an important part of the fourth and fifth grade curriculum at hundreds of Valley schools for more than a decade. With many Arizonans making New Year’s resolutions to make better food and fitness choices right now, this contest is a great opportunity for families to work together and create a healthy recipe that is also kidfriendly. “One of the best ways to nurture healthy eating choices in kids is to encourage them to help prepare food using nutrition-rich ingredients,” says Myrna Collins, health promotion executive, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona. “Over the course of the last five years we have been in awe of the creative and nutritious side dishes that kid chefs in Arizona have developed. We’re looking forward to seeing the creativity of our contestants this year.” The cooking contest is open to any Arizona kid between the ages of 9 and 12 years old. The rules are simple — each

submission must be for an original hot or cold side dish recipe. The creation has to have at least one fruit or vegetable and be able to be cooked in 20 minutes or less, not including prep time. That is it — the rest is up to the kid chef to make the tastiest and most nutritious creation. Contestants can submit recipes at www.walkonaz.com between Jan. 1–27, 2016. A panel of experts will select the top five recipes based on nutritional value, taste and originality. Finalists will get to prepare and share their masterpiece at a Phoenix Suns home game Feb. 6, 2016, at the Talking Stick Resort Arena. After the live cooking demonstrations, recipe details will be posted online at www.walkonaz.com for a public vote. Voting will be open from Feb. 6 through Feb. 17, 2016. All the finalists will earn fun prizes and the grand prizewinner will receive a new bike.

“Not enough attention can be paid to the issue of childhood obesity,” adds Collins. “Teaching children at an early age how to make healthy food choices and prepare food that is not only good for them but is also tasty is an invaluable lesson that will have lifelong benefits. The Walk On! Kids Cooking Challenge is a perfect way to facilitate family participation in meal preparation.” Last year’s contest winner was 10-year-old Isabella Buoscio from El Mirage. Her winning dish was called Fruity Kale Salad. “I wanted to enter to see what I could do and see how good a chef I was,” says Buoscio, who has been cooking since she was just 6 years old. Visit www.walkonaz.com for complete contest details and to submit a recipe. All entries must be submitted no later than Jan. 27, 2016. The Walk On! Kids Cooking Challenge is part of the 11th annual Walk On! Challenge, a free month-long health

and fitness challenge held each year in February. With childhood obesity rates reaching epidemic proportions, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona designed this program to motivate fourth and fifth-grade students across Arizona to incorporate healthy habits into their daily routines for now and in the future. For more information on the Walk On! program visit www.walkonaz.com. For more information about Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, visit www.azblue.com.

Be Smart about Antibiotic Use When used correctly, antibiotics and similar drugs known as antimicrobial agents can alleviate infections caused by various bacteria and some types of fungi and parasites. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that these drugs have been used successfully for the last 70 years to treat patients with infectious diseases. But antibiotics cannot treat illnesses stemming from viruses, which include most colds and the flu. As effective as antibiotics can be, antibiotic resistance is a growing problem. The CDC reports that at least 2 million people become infected with bacteria that have become resistant to antibiotics, and roughly, 23,000 people die each year as a result of these types of infections. An April 2014 report from the World Health Organization stated, "This serious threat is no longer a prediction for the future, it is happening right now in every region of the world and has the potential to affect anyone, of any age, in any country. It is now a major threat to public health." The Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics says antibiotic resistance occurs when an antibiotic has lost its ability to effectively control or kill bacterial growth. The three main ways resistance develops include natural resistance to certain types of antibiotics, genetic mutation or through the acquisition of resistance from another bacterium. This resistance can occur spontaneously or through misuse of antibiotics or antimicrobials. Prescription medications are not always the culprits, either. Antibiotic use in livestock and food production also may contribute to resistance.

When antibiotic resistance occurs, a stronger drug may be needed to treat an infection that was once taken care of by a milder medication.

Prudent antibiotic use can help prevent the recurrence of resistance. Individuals can help the process in a number of ways.

Become educated. The health resource Medscape, powered

by WebMD, says in a recent survey of 796 clinicians, 42 percent of doctors have admitted to prescribing antibiotics 10 to 24 percent of the time even when they are not sure they are necessary. Patient request is a large factor in such offerings. About 25 percent of patients ask their doctor or nurse for antibiotics. Patients who educate themselves about the proper application of antibiotics may be less likely to

come back for strep throat or other cultures to see if you need an antibiotic. Many viral-based illnesses will go away within two weeks' time.

Adhere to dosage guidelines. When prescribed antibiotics for an infection, take them as directed, making sure you complete the dosage cycle. Do not stop simply because you feel better. Stopping early may not be enough to effectively kill the bacteria and may contribute to resistance in the future. Antibiotic abuse and resistance are concerns that can be addressed by becoming informed and making smart medication choices.

Decrease Mucus Production & Subsequent Sore Throats By MS

When allergies, colds or the flu strike, the resulting symptoms can be unpleasant. Watery eyes, sneezing, aches, pains and lethargy are common. Two additional symptoms common to respiratory illnesses include excess mucus production and sore throat. Mucus is a vital component of bodily health. The American Academy of Otolaryngology says glands in the nose and throat continually produce thin mucus to moisten and clean respiratory passageways. This mucus traps foreign matter and can help combat infection. When viruses or bacteria irritate parts of the nose and throat, excess mucus may be produced as the immune system attempts to retaliate. This mucus may thicken and become more acidic. Extra mucus can produce its own side effects, including further irritation. According to New York-Presbyterian Hospital, in many cases, excess mucus production can lead to post-nasal drip and subsequent sore throats. People often mistake post-nasal drip and related sore throat as separate medical conditions. But each can be traced to whichever illness or irritant (such as dry air or chemical exposure) is triggering the body's mucus response. Reducing the amount of mucus pooling in the back of the throat can help a person feel better more quickly and can be used in conjunction with medical advice.

Limit foods that may increase mucus production.

Dairy products, wheat, soy, bananas, sugar, and preservatives may contribute to mucus production, according to The University of Maryland Medical Center.

Drink peppermint or regular mint tea. The natural

Rely on salt solutions. Simple nasal saline rinses or

Don't Be Burned by Poor Fever Advice Elevated body temperature, also known as fever, makes many people run to the medicine cabinet. This is especially true when fever strikes a young child and parents' concerns grow. But fevers are quite common and not nearly as harmful as many people may think. Although illnesses may bring about fevers that can be life threatening, including malaria and dengue, fevers that are more run-of-the-mill are typically triggered by common bacterial or viral infections or even inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, offers The Mayo Clinic. Sometimes the cause of a fever can't be identified, but that is not necessarily cause for alarm. Fevers are a natural immune response. The purpose of a fever is to gain an advantage over an infectious agent by making the body less favorable for the spread of this agent, whether it's a virus or bacterium. Many infectious agents are temperature-sensitive and require the right mix of conditions to be able to become profligate consumers of the body's resources. The hypothalamus is the body's internal thermostat and will be triggered by biochemical substances in the blood alerting the body to the presence of a potential invader. The body then will retain and generate more heat to essentially kill off that invader. According to the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Indiana University, because children have immature and novice immune systems, they tend to get higher fevers more quickly than adults do. As children age and their bodies learn and adapt, fevers typically are not nearly as severe. This may be a reason why a child's high fever is less of a concern than the same fever in an adult. Normal body temperature fluctuates during the day, but a temperature from about 97 F (36.1 C) to 99 F (37.2 C) generally is considered "normal." Adults should only be concerned if a fever is high-grade, reaching 104 F or more. Such fevers are considered dangerous. Chronic fevers, or those persisting for longer than three to four days, also should be checked out by a physician. 28 January 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

Watching how a person behaves may indicate whether he or she is ill enough to necessitate a doctor visit. Infants should always be checked by a doctor if they have a fever because it could be a sign of a serious infection. Low-grade fevers generally do not require any medicine, and taking a fever-reducer may prolong the underlying illness or mask the cause of it. Give the body a chance to fight the foreign invader before reaching for acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Physicians may advise avoiding fever-lowering drugs for temperatures of 102 F (38.9 C) or lower. Always call a doctor if you need clarification on medication dosage and other fever recommendations. Fevers can be scary, but they are just one of many ways the human body defends itself against illness.

Make 2016 the Year Your Home Becomes Smoke Free By Dr. Gregory L. Jantz, a mental health expert and certified addiction specialist

It’s not unusual for restaurants or other public buildings to be smoke free – either voluntarily or by state law – to protect nonsmokers from secondhand smoke. But the secondhand-smoke problem persists in private homes where each family sets its own rules. While the family smoker sometimes is banished to the patio, that’s not always the case. And if the smoker is filling the house with fumes, the health of everyone who lives there could suffer, according to the Centers for Disease Control. That’s why getting the smoker in your life to quit could be the best New Year’s resolution you come up with for 2016. There are many reasons why smokers should make an effort to quit. But certainly near the top of the list is the health of the people around them. Since 1964, about 2.5 million nonsmokers have died from health problems caused by exposure to secondhand smoke, according to the Centers for Disease Control. In children, secondhand smoke can cause ear infections; more frequent and severe asthma attacks; respiratory symptoms, such as coughing, sneezing and shortness of breath; respiratory infections, such as bronchitis and pneumonia; and a greater risk for sudden infant death syndrome, the CDC reports. Adults who never smoked also aren’t immune to the effects of secondhand smoke, the CDC reports. They can suffer from heart disease, lung cancer and stroke. The good news is that secondhand-smoke exposure has decreased over the years. From 1988 to 1991, about 88 percent of nonsmokers who were tested showed evidence of being exposed to secondhand smoke. That had dropped to 25 percent by 2011-12, the CDC reported. That’s a move in the right direction, and it would be great to see that percentage continue to drop. Here are a few steps anyone can take toward making their homes smoke free in the coming year:

• The organization Americans for Nonsmokers Rights recommends posting a sign on your front door to notify visitors that your home is smoke free. The group also suggests you let all caregivers and babysitters know that they are not to smoke in or around your home, and that you request any smokers who live in the house to smoke outdoors, away from entrances and windows. • Recognize that the smokers in your life face a difficult task if they try to quit. Encourage them to gradually wean themselves off the cigarette habit. There are various products on the market can help. • Don’t stop with just the house. You also can make any family vehicles smoke free, further reducing the time family members might be exposed to secondhand smoke. Nicotine addiction can be stubborn. When people have multiple addictions, it’s often the last one they are able to kick. But don’t be discouraged. People do quit, and if there are smokers in your life and in your home, they can quit, too. azhealthandliving.com | January 2016

20 Ways to Live Life to the Fullest Time is a precious commodity, which is why many people try to embrace life and live it to the fullest. Although many people adopt the philosophy of living life to the fullest at a young age, this approach garnered greater attention thanks to a 2007 movie. Directed by Rob Reiner, "The Bucket List" starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman introduced a larger audience to setting goals and doing as much as possible to make those goals a reality. Freeman and Nicholson played two terminally ill men who set off to complete their personal to-do lists before their diseases catch up with them. The movie helped coin the term "bucket list," which is a reference to things individuals want to do before they "kick the bucket." Although the two main characters in the film are terminally ill, the idea of creating a bucket list is something anyone hoping to live a full, adventurous life can do. In fact, several bucket list organizations have sprung up, and other groups help make trips and other goals happen. People can even meet up with others who share the same desires and do them together. While anyone's bucket list is a personal endeavor, some goals are quite popular and desired by many. The following are some ideas to get a person started.

10. Tour every continent.

1. Throw a party on a rooftop in a bustling city or urban center.

12. Meet your favorite actor, athlete, and/or author.

2. Take a parent on his or her dream vacation. 3. Immerse yourself in the culture of a foreign country.

11. Do a professional photo shoot with you as the model.

13. Be an extra in a movie. 14. Publish a book of any sort.

4. Go back to school to embark on a different career.

15. Participate in a festival, such as running with the bulls or Oktoberfest, in the festivals' countries of origin.

5. See the Northern Lights.

16. Dive at the Great Barrier Reef.

6. Become fluent in another language.

17. Fly a plane.

7. Go on safari and see endangered animals in their natural habitats.

18. Gather your entire family together for the biggest family reunion yet.

8. Take friends on a skydiving adventure.

19. Try a new hobby that is out of your comfort zone.

9. Drive cross-country.

20. Travel to the top of the tallest building in the world.

Find Time to Travel in the Year Ahead By MS

Travel is something many people love but few have the time to do. While some people avoid travel because it can be costly, many more admit they would travel more if they simply had the time. So how can you make travel a bigger part of your life in the year ahead? Consider the following tips.

Use your vacation days. Many people don't travel because they simply aren't using their paid time off. A Harris Interactive survey conducted for the career website Glassdoor found that only 51 percent of American employees use all of their eligible paid time off and vacation time. Some of those workers may be hesitant to take days off for fear of upsetting their superiors, but another survey suggests that might be a mistake. A 2015 study from the staffing firm The Creative Group found that 40 percent of executives feel their employees would be more productive if they used their allotted vacation time. Hit the road and work at the same time. If things at work are simply too hectic, consider hitting the road and working at the same time. While unencumbered travel tends to be the most relaxing, working vacations can allow you to let off some steam and get your work done outside the hustle and bustle of the office. Resolve to work only a few hours each day, tackling a few projects in the early morning before you call it quits and enjoy your destination. The ease of working remotely can make it easier than ever before to stay connected to the office while still getting time to travel. Make better use of weekends. Travel need not be limited to vacations. If you truly love to get up and go, plan more weekend trips. Find places within a few hours of your home so you spend less time behind the wheel and more time enjoying your destination. Plan ahead for three-day weekends so you don't have to scramble at the last minute to make arrangements.

Finding time to travel can be as simple as taking advantage of paid time off from work. Extend work trips. Another way to see new places is to extend work trips. If you have a business trip coming up, add an extra day at the end of the trip so you can explore a new locale without the burden of having to work. This can be a cost-effective way to travel, as your company will no doubt still pay to fly you home even if you stay an extra day to do some sightseeing. Finding time to travel is not as hard as many working professionals may think. Oftentimes all it takes is a little extra effort and the willingness to leave the office behind for a few days. azhealthandliving.com | January 2016

Treat Yourself to Some Much-Needed Pampering The daily grind sometimes is exhausting. In fact, a poll from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Harvard School of Public Health found that 49 percent of Americans reported having a major stressful event or experience in the past year, and 26 percent of people said they had a "great deal" of stress. In small amounts, stress can push a person to act and grow. But constant stress can become debilitating and has been linked to a compromised immune system and other unhealthy side effects. This is why a number of people resolve to reduce stress. In addition to taking on fewer responsibilities, engaging in some activities to promote a relaxed mind and body can help alleviate stress and tension. Though the term "pampering" may not appeal to everyone, a day of pampering might be just what you need to relieve stress and unwind.

Get a full-body massage. Licensed massage therapists have the training and knowledge to work the kinks out of your muscles and ease aches and pains. Massage therapy works tension out of the body and can help release feelgood endorphins. A massage can improve circulation and help reduce blood pressure. It's difficult to walk out of a spa without feeling relaxed. Schedule a manicure and pedicure appointment. If you do not have time for a full massage, having your hands and feet pampered can be a good substitute. Manicures and pedicures are not just for women, either. Men can indulge and opt for no nail polish. Many salons offer different types of manicures and pedicures, depending on personal preference. Spa treatments may include warm paraffin wax or hot stones to further ease pain and enhance the pleasure of the experience. Take a retreat. Schedule a trip to a resort or even a small hotel that is away from the hustle and bustle of 32 January 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

where you live. Such a respite can provide a welcome change. New scenery and a chance to escape the daily grind can effectively relieve stress. Consider low-tech accommodations and turn your phone or tablet off for a few days.

Try relaxing aromatherapy. Aromatherapy is the use of aromatic plant extracts and essential oils to elicit mental and physical responses. Lavender is a relaxing scent that can be used during a massage or in baths to induce a sense of calm. Experiment with other scents and oils to achieve the desired result. Laugh with friends. Plan a friends' night where you can go out for drinks and conversation or huddle around the television and watch your favorite comedy. Laughter is often a great medicine for stress, as is the company of other people who can provide some comic relief.

Q. What are the signs and dangers Q. What new treatments are available Q. What is the cause of varicose and of glaucoma? for spinal stenosis? spider veins? How can they be treated? A. Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can damage the optic nerve, which links the eye to the brain. One of the greatest dangers of glaucoma is that it is difficult for people to know if they have glaucoma without an annual eye health examination. One sign of glaucoma is higher than average intraocular pressure (pressure within the eye). Intraocular pressure can increase, but the eye will likely feel the same. Another sign of glaucoma is peripheral (side) vision loss. Many of us are unaware how far to the side we can see, so it is possible to lose significant amounts of peripheral vision before noticing a problem. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the United States, and it is estimated that half the people affected with glaucoma are unaware they have it. People with an increased risk for glaucoma are those who are over the age of 60, AfricanAmerican, diabetic, severely nearsighted, or have a family history of glaucoma. The information contained in this article is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, care or treatment. A. Aging causes arthritic corrosion to build A. Varicose veins are incompetent veins that up in the areas of our spine where the sciatic nerve exits. This common condition in people over 50 is called spinal stenosis. Spinal stenosis symptoms include back, hip or buttocks pain, with pain, heaviness, or numbness radiating from the back into the legs. The symptoms are usually worse when walking or standing and may be relieved by sitting. Very often, we talk about the nerves being pinched, but the truth is that the symptoms of stenosis are caused by a lack of blood supply to the nerves rather than direct pressure on them. The standard medical treatment for stenosis includes medications, injections and surgery.

This occurs when the valves in the veins fail to keep the blood flowing in one direction that is towards the heart. This condition causes pain and swelling, night cramps, change in skin color and severe cases ulcers. Spider veins are small blue and red vessels visible within the skin, usually on legs but sometimes on face and chest.

Cyclical loading and unloading of the spine is one of them. It works by intermittently decompressing the spine, which pumps fresh nutrients into the nerve and eliminates accumulated toxins. Another technique uses a mild electrical current applied to the leg that research shows may increase the blood supply to the sciatic nerve in stenosis patients.

CPAP consists of a mask that fits over the mouth and/or nose using a tube to connect to an air compressor next to the bed. The compressor forces air into the tube and mask, thus shooting air into the nose and/or mouth, forcing the airway to open from the pressure of the air compressor. This mode of treatment is best discussed with your physician. Surgery, such as tongue reduction, surgical removal of the soft tissue at the back of the throat, removal of the uvula, modification of the palate, etc., is another treatment option. Surgery is performed in-office or at a hospital by an ENT or oral surgeon. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine does not consider surgery an effective long-term treatment for sleep-disordered breathing, and surgical procedures are considered only 30 to 50 percent effective. Oral appliance therapy has become a viable, scientifically based treatment option for sleep-disordered breathing. Oral appliances hold the jaw in a position that allows the airway to remain as patent as possible during sleep. They are similar to athletic mouth guards, but are less bulky and completely noninvasive. Some patients report an increase in saliva production or minor discomfort upon awakening, but that generally subsides.

Q. What is the role of the kidney in chronic pain, and how does acupuncture deal with the pain? A. The kidney is considered an important

organ because of not only its role for water and body fluid metabolism, but also its role in healthy bones and foundation of life. According to principles of the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), there are three basic substances called: Jing/Essence, Qi/Vital innate, and Sheng/Spirit are stored in the kidney. The Jing also known as the Essence is related to life development. In other words, the kidney is the primary organ associated with problems such as growing up, aging and infertility. As we grow older our kidney Qi also known as the vital innate declines, this comes with issues such as bone loss and poor hearing due to kidney’s unique functions of nourishing the bones and ears. Chronic low back pain is usually considered a sign of kidney imbalance/deficiency. As the kidneys are “housed” in our low back, deficiency of the vital innate in kidney is initially related to signs and symptoms such as soreness and weakness around low back. For an elder individual, chronic low back pain with knee pain are commonly seen. Kidney deficiency may lead to a variety of issues such as dizziness, tinnitus, headache and shoulder pain.

Q. What is a mommy makeover?

Q. What is the lump on my throat?

A. Some women find that after giving birth their bodies are much different from when they were pre-baby. Often, abdominal muscles are weakened and excess skin becomes the undesirable muffin top. Extra weight, sagging breasts, and stretch marks are common issues women experience during pregnancy and after giving birth. If you are on a strict diet and exercising on a regular basis but your results are not where you want them to be, having a Mommy Makeover can help.

A. The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck or just below your Adam's apple. Your thyroid produces hormones that regulate your heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and body weight. Although cancer within the thyroid is uncommon in the U.S., the incidence seems to be increasing, perhaps because technology is allowing clinicians to detect them at a much smaller size than in the past. Most cases can be cured with treatment.

The Mommy Makeover derives from a series of cosmetic surgeries consisting of a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), breast augmentation/ lift, and liposuction. There are a variety of procedures that fall into the tummy tuck category. The traditional tummy tuck, removes fat and skin around the abdomen while also tightening the abdominal muscles, permanently restoring the firmness to the midsection.

Breast issues are also a common complaint. These can be sagging breasts, volume loss and excess skin. A breast augmentation can restore lost volume and improve the symmetry of your breasts. Typically, there are no signs or symptoms of early thyroid cancer. As thyroid cancer grows, it can cause a lump on your neck that can be palpated, a change in your voice such as hoarseness, difficulty swallowing with pain in your throat and in later stages swollen lymph nodes. Risks factors include the female sex, for cancer of the thyroid arises more often in women than in men. Exposure to high levels of radiation and certain inherited genetic syndromes. Other risks are a history of a goiter, being of Asian descent and being between the ages of 25 and 65. Treatment will usually involve a complete thyroidectomy. Typically, this is done through a traditional 8-9cm incision across the neck, but at Precision Surgery, we are employing a 3-4cm incision for most thyroid resections, which translates to a 4-5 day recovery period and less pain. The smaller incision also offers cosmetics benefits which traditional surgery was unable to provide. An early detection is key for optimal outcomes.

Q. Can diet affect inflammation and Q. Are there any potential problems Q. Is your fear of cosmetic procedures pain? that may arise if I have a hearing loss inhibiting your skin’s radiance? A. Considerable scientific information and and don’t treat it? A. For many people high cost, downtime, pain clinical observation have accumulated in recent A. Hearing loss can create more problems for and side effects are a major inhibitor for years showing that chronic pain–particularly the debilitating, severe form requiring opioid treatment–needs a “chronic pain" diet. It is important to involve a multidisciplinary treatment approach to treating chronic pain. Part of this may include nutritional counseling. Diet-induced pro-inflammatory mediator release can contribute to dietary injury. For example, a pro-inflammatory diet may include foods with a hyperglycemic index/load, such as bread and refined sugar. In addition, foods that are high in omega 6 fatty acids such as corn, sunflower, safflower, and peanut oils create more inflammation. Other factors include trans-fatty acids, low magnesium intake, low potassium intake, low phytonutrient intake, low inflammatory gut microbiota, and low serum levels of vitamin D. Conversely the anti-inflammatory diet group would include fish, lean meats, skinless chicken, omega 3 eggs, vegetables, fruit, sweet potatoes, raw nuts, dark chocolate, red wine and stout beer, coffee and tea, ginger, turmeric, garlic and other spices as well as olive oil, coconut oil and butter.

Multiple cells are involved in a release of inflammatory mediators, which lead to the cellular communication that can generate pain in somatic tissues, such as joint, muscle, disc, ligament, tendon, fascia or epineurium. This communication is complex.

a person the longer it goes untreated. Many people who live with hearing loss tell themselves it is not bad enough to do something about it. In fact, the average person who has trouble hearing waits on average 7 -10 years before seeing an audiologist to have it treated. Untreated hearing loss can lead to auditory deprivation which can cause the hearing nerve to shut down over time. If the hearing nerve shuts down from lack of auditory stimulation, chances of hearing aids helping are very slim. If hearing aids are worn after the nerve ceases to function, the biggest complaint is clarity. In these situations, the only option is a surgically implanted hearing device.

correcting the skin imperfections that may affect self-confidence. With advancements in technology along with experienced providers, you now can have it all. New SublativeR treatments utilize non-laser, non-light based technology to provide desired results without the risk or worry of more invasive procedures. This fractionated bi-polar radio frequency (RF) technology precisely targets the skin at a level to stimulate new collagen and new healthy surface skin cells offering some mild surface ablation while introducing deep dermal heat for renewed cellular proliferation. The result is improvement to acne scars, upper lip lines, crow’s feet, melasma and overall texture and tone. Because this is a non-laser device, and does not identify skin color, it is a safe and effective treatment for all skin types. With minimal social down time, and options to treat only problem areas this is an excellent option for everyone.

Recent studies also show that untreated hearing loss is now raising the risk for the early onset of dementia, due to lack of stimulation, which ultimately results in cognitive decline. When you deprive your ears from hearing, you are also depriving your brain from processing environmental sounds, speech and cognition. Your brain Start the New Year with skin you love and processes sound binaurally (from both sides), feel confident about. By keeping all the areas of the brain functioning to their full potential, the risk of dementia decreases.

Although diet may have an influence, it is only part of the equation of pain management. However, in some patients this can be clinically significant and should be explored as this could affect her quality of life and function and pain relief.

Q. Is it safe to visit my dentist during Q. With the New Year upon us, what do residents and travelers need to pregnancy? know about Wildlife World Zoo, A. According to the Academy of General Aquarium & Safari Park? Dentistry, you schedule an appointment right away if you are considering becoming pregnant A. The most important thing to know is or at least during your first trimester. This way, you and your dentist can map out a treatment plan that is best for your health and your baby’s.

Can pregnancy change the condition of my mouth? Pregnancy hormone changes can affect your mouth. Some women develop a condition known as “pregnancy gingivitis.” Left uncared for, gingivitis can lead to a more serious form of gum disease called periodontitis. What about X-rays, are they safe? If you have a dental emergency and need an Xray to diagnose the problem, radiation is very low. Digital X-rays are present in most offices and the technician will use a leaded apron and thyroid collar for additional protection. As a precaution, wait until after your pregnancy for any elective X-rays. How important is oral hygiene? Brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily is important. Poor oral hygiene habits during pregnancy have been associated with premature birth, fetal underdevelopment and preeclampsia. Are there certain procedures I should avoid? Routine procedures generally can be performed throughout your pregnancy. Be sure to consult your obstetrician for any emergencies that require anesthesia or prescription medications. Elective procedures that can be postponed should be scheduled after your baby’s birth. To learn more, visit the Academy of General Dentistry at www.knowyourteeth.com.

that Wildlife World is open every day of the year, including all holidays! So, for a fresh start this New Year, consider getting the family outside to enjoy our state's great weather with a visit to Arizona’s largest collection of wild and exotic animals. With about 85 developed acres (with many more on the way) Wildlife World features over 600 wild and endangered species and thousands of animals, as well as several ride attractions like a log flume ride, a sky ride, a tram and an African Safari Train.

For well over a quarter century, one of the hallmarks of Wildlife World has been to create a family friendly experience that brings animals and visitors closer together with innovative habitats and displays. For example, Dragon World — a series of exhibits featuring giant reptiles like the state’s first saltwater crocodile and a large 20 feet, 200 lbs. reticulated python. Another fun exhibit is the baby animal’s nursery, which showcases different young animals throughout the year.

Q. I’m turning 65 soon and looking forward to having Medicare. Do I also need a Medicare Supplement? A. Your question can only be answered after we look at how Medicare benefits are provided and what the out of pocket risks actually are. Original Medicare consists of two parts. Part A covers hospitalization. In 2016, the Part A deductible will be a $1,288. This is the amount Medicare beneficiaries are required to satisfy when admitted to a hospital. On rare occasions, more than one deductible has been required within a 12-month period. Part A will also provide up to 100 days in a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) after a three-day inpatient hospitalization. The first 20 days are paid in full, days 21 – 100 would require a copayment of $157.50 per day equaling $12,600 if a prolonged stay was required. Medicare will not provide coverage in a SNF after a continuous stay of 100 days. Part B of Medicare covers medical expenses. Doctor visits, tests, x-rays, outpatient procedures are all provided by Part B. After the annual deductible of $166, an additional 20 percent co-insurance is required for all services billed under Part B.

It’s also important to know that original Medicare does not provide coverage for With our increasingly busy and urban prescription drugs, commonly referred to as lifestyles, it is important to reconnect with Part D .

Nature whenever and wherever possible. It’s not only healthy for us to make those connections with other living things, but it also helps build support for wildlife and habitat conservation. So take some time this New Year to slow things down and enjoy a fun day and evening at Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park. And be sure to enjoy a great lunch, dinner or drink at Dillon’s KC Style BBQ restaurant and patio bar at the Aquarium. Happy New Year!

A Medicare Supplement policy is designed to reduce or eliminate the out of pocket costs of traditional Medicare for a monthly premium. The alternative to purchasing a Medicare Supplement is to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan. I highly recommend talking with a trusted professional who will help assess your individual needs, and provide options and solutions for your health care.

Scrapbooks Can Help Document Your Year Many interesting and special events take place during the course of a typical year. While the trend is to share photos and anecdotes via social media, these memories tend to be forgotten soon after they are posted. Rather than relegate birthdays, holidays, school milestones, and other such yearly events to the black hole of cyberspace, crafty men, women and children may want to display them in more prominent ways. Scrapbooking is a popular hobby that can help people document various events over the course of the year. But scrapbooking can be much more than that as well. Scrapbooks can serve as valuable resources that speak to the way life once was. Such traditions are not new. Books highlighting family memorabilia, such as recipes, poems, letters and illustrations, were popular in England as early as the 15th century. Even school yearbooks are a type of scrapbook, highlighting students and events in a single convenient book. The reasons for scrapbooking are the same today as they once were. Scrapbooks preserve memories, record family stories and pass down information through generations. Scrapbooks can even be customized in any manner their creators desire.

Showcase the special memories of the year ahead by starting a scrapbook. or slip-in pages that require little work on the part of scrapbookers.

For those who have resolved to devote more time to documenting happy times and special events in the year ahead, scrapbooking is a great way to do just that. Here's how to make the process creative and successful.

Find a Hobby That Works for You By MS

Inspiring hobbies can make life more rewarding. While many people experience some trial and error as they seek something to fill their downtime, the following are a few tips to finding a hobby that will enrich your life and maybe even the lives of others.

Consider your interests. Much like you considered your

interests when choosing a career path, you can benefit from doing the same when the time comes to find a hobby. If your work remains your passion, look for ways to share that passion with others. Perhaps you can teach a class at your community's learning annex or volunteer to work with high school kids who might have expressed an interest in your line of work. If you want to leave the office behind in your downtime, consider your other interests. Avid readers may want to start a local book club, while film buffs may enjoy starting a local film appreciation group. The more passionate you are about a topic or activity, the more likely you can turn it into a successful and rewarding hobby.

Consider your needs. Another way to find a successful

hobby is to consider why you want one in the first place. If your workdays tend to be hectic and you want a quiet escape, then a peaceful hobby such as painting might do the trick. If you're looking for a hobby that can add some spice to your social life and help you meet new people, look for something that encourages teamwork or interaction with other people your age.

Consider your availability. Another thing to consider when choosing a hobby is how much time you will have to pursue it. If your schedule is especially hectic or unpredictable, avoid hobbies that require a big time commitment, as such activities may prove too difficult to commit to. Consider those closest to you. Many people find that the

best hobbies are the ones that allow them to spend more time with their loved ones, whether those loved ones are their own children, their parents or their close friends. Parents may want to find an activity that allows them to bond with their children, while young working professionals may want to find an activity that provides them with opportunities to spend time with their equally busy friends. azhealthandliving.com | January 2016

One task to tackle as winter settles in is sorting through wardrobes and making room for new clothes, as extra clothing can quickly take over a home. In fact, according to the National Association of Professional Organizers, too much clutter, general disorganization, and difficulty determining what to keep and/or discard are the primary reasons individuals reach out to professional organizers. If clearing away closet clutter is on the top of your winter to-do list, consider the following tips.

Know what you have. It's easier to determine what you

can keep and what you can donate or discard when you have an idea of what's in your closet. Take all of your clothes out of closets and drawers and place them on the bed or floor.

Clean the closets thoroughly. The closet organization company Closets by Design suggests a yearly and thorough cleaning of closets. This includes dusting shelving and vacuuming the floor of the closet. You can do the same with armoires and dresser drawers.

Take inventory of your clothing. Create three main sorting piles. Label one "keep," another "donate" and the third one "sell." As you look at your clothing, keep only those items that fit you well and suit both your tastes and your lifestyle. If a piece is high quality and worth the cost of repair, bring it to a tailor or make the modifications yourself. Let go of items you never wear or those you bought on a whim because you wanted to try something trendy. In addition, figure out which type of clothing best suits your lifestyle. If you have 10 pairs of yoga pants but never hit the gym, you can thin out that collection.

Immediately bag donation items. Move items you will be donating out of the room. Place them by the front door and make a plan to drop them off at a thrift store or in a nearby clothing bin.

Don't overlook sales opportunities. An easy way to

make a little extra money is to sell used belongings at consignment stores. Such stores are popular in towns all across the country as more people attempt to conserve 46 January 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

Unruly closets need periodic cleaning and sorting. The beginning of the New Year is as good a time as any to take on such organizational tasks. and cut back on their spending. Consignment shops typically do most of the work, including marketing the items, which can be less hectic and safer than selling things on your own. Only bring in items that are clean and in good condition. Opt to have clothing donated after the consignment period is over if items haven't sold so, they don't end up back in your closet.

Group remaining "keep" clothes in the closet by category. Organize the clothing you keep by color or

style (i.e., casual, formal, exercise, etc.). Arrange the clothes in a way that makes most sense to you.

Consider moving off-season clothes. Sturdy storage

containers and bags can be used to keep off-season clothing out of the closet until it's needed. This frees up more space.

Let a Professional Help Organize Your Home & Life By MS

Many people routinely find themselves confronted with situations that could be made simpler if they were just a little more organized. Whether it's lost keys, cramped cabinets or misplaced documents, minor yet inconvenient situations can be mitigated if not eliminated if men and women simply commit to being more organized. Becoming more organized is a popular resolution come New Year's Day, and many people benefit from hiring professional organizers to make their resolutions a reality. Professional organizers know which strategies work, but men and women should know that not all organizers are the same. Some organizers may work as a hobby or be part of a larger cleaning company, while others are certified in organization. When searching for an organizer, determine if he or she belongs to the National Association of Professional Organizers and/or if an organizer has been certified by the Board of Certification for Professional Organizers速. While certification may not be necessary to help you organize your home or business, certified organizers may have more experience. Organizers may specialize in certain areas. Some deal with corporate and business organization, while others help with real estate staging. Look for one who has experience working with people of your ilk. Organizers will want to examine clients' situations before they develop a plan of action. Therefore, do not feel the need to prepare for the organizer's arrival by cleaning up, as doing so may only mask the problems you're having. The organizer will walk through your home or business and assess your needs. Many organizers will suggest you work with them to learn organizational strategies that you can implement on your own so you remain organized for years to come. Getting organized is more than just having a clean space. It's about taking control of your environment and improving your quality of life. Professional organizers can help accomplish that goal and keep you organized for years to come. azhealthandliving.com | January 2016

How to Overcome Common Roadblocks to Weight Loss Diet, exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight are essential elements of a healthy lifestyle. Adapting to a new diet and embracing a new exercise regimen requires a strong commitment, but so, too, does maintaining a healthy weight once those pounds have been shed. Losing weight can be difficult, and many people who set out to shed a few extra pounds encounter a handful of common obstacles along the way. These roadblocks do not disappear once weight has been lost, which only highlights the long-term approach men and women must take as they look to lose weight and keep pounds off for the long haul. The following are a handful of obstacles men and women may face as they look to lose weight and keep weight off for years to come.

Snacks Snacking is perhaps the biggest obstacle to weight loss many men and women will face. Choosing the wrong snacks can compromise your efforts to lose weight, but the right snacks can provide energy boosts without negatively impacting your waistline. Rather than highcalorie snacks that offer little nutritional value, choose low-calorie alternatives. For example, instead of fried tortilla chips opt for reduced-sodium baked chips instead. In lieu of ice cream, choose low-fat yogurt, which can be just as refreshing without all those empty calories.

Setbacks

Restaurants Dining out is another potential obstacle for men and women trying to lose weight. Avoid buffet-style restaurants or those establishments you know serve especially large portions. When dining out, ask to swap high-calorie side dishes with vegetables when possible, and choose nutritional, low-calorie entrees that won't compromise the hard work you put in all week eating at home.

Busy schedules One common obstacle that compromises even the most 48 January 2016

dedicated weight loss efforts is a hectic schedule. Commitments to career and family can make it easy to veer off course with regard to diet. Planning is often an effective way to overcome a hectic schedule. Plan meals in advance so you are not tempted to order takeout or delivery after a long day at the office. Use weekends to schedule and plan your weeknight meals, preparing meals in advance when possible and using a slow cooker so your meals are cooking while you're at the office and ready to eat the moment you arrive home at night.

Setbacks are another common obstacle that can threaten weight loss goals. Everyone experiences a setback or two as they attempt to lose weight and keep that weight off. Don't allow such setbacks to derail your weight loss efforts, and don't beat yourself up when a setback occurs. Respond by rededicating yourself to your weight loss efforts, and before you know it, you will be back on track.

Men and women can expect to face some common obstacles as they attempt to lose weight. Anticipating those obstacles is a great way to ensure they don't derail your weight loss efforts.

Low-Calorie Foods That Still Fill You Up

Hunger can be a difficult hurdle to clear for people looking to lose weight. While nutritious foods don't lack for taste, many people adapting to new diets featuring healthy, lowcalorie foods find themselves still hungry after meals, making it difficult for them to stay the course and reach their weightloss goals. Some low-calorie foods may contribute to hunger pangs, but there are many foods that satisfy hunger despite their low calorie count.

Baked potatoes. Potatoes might be high in carbohydrates,

but they also are loaded with nutrients and antioxidants that can boost the immune system. Baked potatoes also provide a powerful punch of potassium, which can help men and women better control their blood pressure. That's especially beneficial to overweight or obese men and women who are already dealing with high blood pressure. Baked potatoes also can make men and women feel full, which should help low-calorie devotees avoid overeating.

Oatmeal. While many people may only eat oatmeal when

fighting a cold, this high-fiber and low-calorie breakfast alternative can be enjoyed year-round, helping to fight feelings of hunger all along. According to the Dairy Council of CaliforniaŠ, oatmeal contains soluble fiber that stays in the stomach for long periods of time. That contributes to feelings of fullness and may just decrease midmorning hunger pangs. The soluble fiber in oatmeal can also decrease low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, which is often referred to as bad cholesterol.

Apples are another low-calorie source of soluble fiber, and

apples are a good source of vitamin C, which can boost the immune system. But apples are more than just a lowcalorie food that contributes to feelings of fullness. Finnish researchers who studied dietary data of more than 9,200 men and women found that those who ate apples frequently had lower risk of stroke than those who did not eat apples. That could be attributable to the effect of soluble fiber on LDL cholesterol as well as the effects of the antioxidant compounds found in apples. azhealthandliving.com | January 2016

How to Adjust to a Healthier Diet Change often requires an adjustment period. Men and women who switch jobs may need a few weeks before they feel fully comfortable in a new office, while students changing schools may also need some time to adapt to their new surroundings. An adjustment period is also common when people decide to adopt healthier diets. Diet is often habitforming, and men and women will need some time to adjust as they kick some bad dietary habits in favor of healthier fare. The following are some simple ways to make that adjustment period a little easier to swallow.

Go slowly. Some people are capable of going cold turkey when adjusting to a new diet, while others must take a more gradual approach. Unless a health condition that requires immediate change is driving your dietary changes, take things slowly so your body acclimates to its new diet over time. Such an approach may make your efforts more successful over the long haul than making more sudden, drastic changes. For example, suddenly cutting your daily calorie intake in half may force you into old, unhealthy habits when hunger pangs inevitably arise. But gradually reducing your caloric intake over time may make it easier for your body to adjust, decreasing the likelihood that you will relapse into bad habits. Explain your motivation to loved ones. Adults, especially married men and women and parents, may find adjusting to a new diet especially difficult unless their spouses and/or families are making similar adjustments. If you are the only member of your household who will be adjusting to a new diet, explain your efforts and motivation to your loved ones. Such an explanation will make them less likely to bring unhealthy foods into your home. In addition, your loved ones can prove an invaluable source of support as you make this big adjustment in your life. Embrace positive results, even if they are initially underwhelming. Just because you have adopted a new diet does not mean you will see immediate results. Fad 50 January 2016

diets meant to last just a few weeks may produce immediate results, but such results likely will not withstand the test of time, and you may even gain weight when you revert to some of your old eating habits. The right diet will produce long-lasting results, but you must allow for some time before such diets lead to significant weight loss. In the meantime, place more emphasis on how you feel than the figure that shows up on your bathroom scale each morning. Upon adopting a healthier diet, you will start to notice how much better you feel than you felt when eating a diet filled with fatty, unhealthy foods. Remind yourself of this extra hop in your step as you continue on the path to a healthier lifestyle.

Don't give up. Your adjustment period will require some discipline, and there may be moments when you backslide into bad habits. If that happens, don't allow it to derail all of the progress you have made since switching to a healthier diet. Just accept that you had a setback and resolve to do your best to avoid having another one. The sooner you get back on a healthier track, the better you will feel.

Health Boosters You Have at Home By MS

Many people desire to be healthier, and sales of nutritional supplements reflect such desires. A report by Packaged Facts titled "Nutritional Supplements in the U.S.," says supplement sales reached $11.5 billion in 2012 and have been climbing ever since. In addition to an increase in supplement use, gym memberships also have increased. IBIS World's "Gym, Health & Fitness Clubs" market research report indicates the number of gym memberships have increased in the last several years as consumers have become more health-conscious. While these avenues to health certainly can be beneficial, individuals also can turn to many health boosters in their own homes to help them achieve their goals of living healthier lifestyles.

Lemon water is now being touted as a beneficial addition to

one's daily diet. Lemon water can help reduce acidity in the body, including removing uric acid, a main cause of inflammation. Lemons contain pectin fiber, which can aid in weight loss by helping to fight hunger pangs. Lemons also contain a load of vitamin C, which can give the immune system a boost.

Bicycle. Dust off that bicycle that has been hiding in your

garage. Cycling is an excellent form of cardiovascular exercise, and riders can tailor their intensity levels to correlate to their ages and abilities. Many people find cycling an enjoyable form of activity because it gets them outside and often doesn't feel like exercise.

Fruits and vegetables. Produce offers many of the vitamins

and minerals people look to supplements to provide. Including diverse fruit and vegetable choices in one's diet can improve health in various ways, including providing a boost to the immune system.

Honey is a valuable superfood that can boost overall health.

In addition to soothing sore throats, it can serve as an antibiotic and wound healer, provide allergy protection, increase calcium absorption, and provide a source of energy without the insulin spike associated with other forms of sugar. azhealthandliving.com |Janaury 2016

Gabrielle Union

Timeless beauty & continued success Actress Gabrielle Union has been working in the entertainment industry for more than two decades. One of her most popular early roles was as a lead cheerleader in Bring It On, a cult classic from 2000 and—as many media sources point out—it looks like the 43-year-old actress hasn’t aged a day since then. Active in both film and television, 2016 will be a big year for Union as she stars in upcoming films The Birth of a Nation, Keanu, Sleepless Night and A Meyers Christmas. When it comes to the small screen, most recently she is popular for her lead role on the BET series Being Mary Jane (which she also produces) and a guest role on crime drama Elementary. “What I love about season 3 of Being Mary Jane and A Meyers Christmas is that I’m executive producing,” she told EBONY Magazine. “…Being able to help provide opportunities for so many undervalued talent and actors is huge to me. So just being able to be a more active participant in my future and career has been a huge blessing. Looking for projects that I can not only have a part in, but also play a part in how it’s being brought to life is such a huge blessing.” Union also lends her vocal talents to The Lion Guard, an animated reprisal of The Lion King that airs on Disney Junior and the Disney Channel. An avid Lion King fan, Union has told multiple sources that she’s excited to be involved in the ongoing project. “I’ve done a couple of voices on other projects but this is the first time I had the opportunity to be a part of the whole series, from the film to the show,” Union also told EBONY Magazine. “It’s just a huge opportunity because 52

I’m a diehard Lion King fan. I’ve seen the show on Broadway like four times. The Lion King parade in Times Square, I’m front and center and the film, I’ve seen a thousand times so when the new creation came up, I was like this is huge and they want me to be Nala?! That’s awesome, so I jumped at the opportunity.” In her personal life, Union is married to basketball star Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat. She is a mom to one biological son and a stepmom to Wade’s two children; the couple wed in 2014 and all signs point to a happy relationship, according to insiders. It may be no coincidence that Wade’s career performance has skyrocketed since marrying Union. “I think D [Dwayne] is a happy person and I think happy people accomplish great things," Union recently told USA TODAY. "I mean, I’d like to think I’m a part of that but he’s just a happy, freakishly happy person. So, yeah, you know, they always say good things happen to good people, but that doesn’t always seem to be the case. And you know, for him, he’s had some rough times with injuries but I think he’s just in a really happy, freakishly happy place and we’re kind of all enjoying the fruits of that labor.” When it comes to beauty, health and fitness, Union leads by example. “In addition to drinking plenty of water, we know Gabrielle is big on sun protection since she’s teamed up with Neutrogena in the past to educate the public on the importance of and help provide underprivileged families with SPF,” cites HollywoodLife.com. She also supports a variety of causes including Susan G. Komen for the Cure, women’s health rights and is an advocate for victims of assault. In addition, Union has launched her own plus-size clothing line and other products. Currently, she’s also up for an NAACP Image Award for “best dramatic lead actress” on her show Being Mary Jane. The series itself is competing in the best drama category. Winners will be announced next month, according to AJC.com. For fans interested in keeping up with Union’s adventures in 2016, you can follow her on Instagram at www.instagram.com/gabunion. azhealthandliving.com | January 2016

Best Buys for the New Year Smart shopping involves making budget-friendly purchases. Never paying full price is a mantra shoppers can follow to help keep their finances in check. In addition to coupons and other discounts, shoppers can usually score deals based on which time of year they shop for particular items. Each year, various consumer resources offer advice on the best time to buy certain items. The beginning of the year is often an ideal time to purchase certain items. Consumers who take advantage of sales offered at the start of the New Year can save substantial amounts of money. Now that the holiday season has passed, consumers can begin to find deals on items for themselves.

Clothing. Post-Christmas sales are booming, and stores are looking to sell what's left of their inventories to make room for spring and summer selections. Even though the weather outside is still cold, sweaters, pants, coats, and more are usually available at a discount come January. It may take some digging through the racks, but there's an excellent chance to discover some great items.

Boats. Wintertime is boat show season, but it's also the

Spring and summer are by far the more popular seasons to tie the knot, but reception halls, musical acts, florists, and other vendors may heavily discount their services in winter.

Things to Consider Before Buying an Investment Property By MS

Real estate can be an incredibly fruitful investment. Buying a property at the right time can provide investors with a substantial return when they decide to sell, and that opportunity compels many men and women to consider investing in real estate. While there's no denying real estate can yield a great return on buyers' initial investments, there's more to making money in real estate than simply buying a property and waiting for its value to rise. Buyers who are thinking of investing in real estate should consider a host of factors before purchasing an investment property.

Price trends Recent sale activity in a given town or neighborhood is something prospective real estate investors should study before buying an investment property. Would-be real estate investors can explore real estate websites such as zillow.com for recent sale information, which may also be available through local government agencies. Such data can be invaluable, showing potential investors which neighborhoods are in demand and which may be in decline.

Taxes Investment properties are not eligible for as many tax benefits as primary residences. However, landlords can write off repairs, management costs and other fees associated with rental properties. But it's not just their own tax bill prospective investors should consider before buying an investment property. Many potential buyers down the road may prefer a property in an area where property taxes are relatively low, so even if you can afford the tax on the investment property, you may find buyers are unwilling to assume that burden when you put the property up for sale in the future.

Location Prospective real estate investors no doubt know the value of location with regard to real estate, but if you can't afford to buy in a neighborhood that's currently hot that does not necessarily mean you can't still capitalize on that area's popularity. When a town becomes popular, its property values rise, and many buyers find themselves just barely priced out. When that happens, the surrounding towns tend to become the next hot neighborhood, as these areas are

nearly as close to the attractions that make the initial neighborhood so desirable. Buying on the outskirts of a hot neighborhood can set you up to benefit nicely when that area gets too pricey.

Schools School systems should be examined even if you do not have children. In a recent Trulia.com survey of American homebuyers, 35 percent of respondents with children underage 18 indicated they want to live in great school districts. GreatSchools.org has profiles of 200,000 public, public charter and private preK-12 schools. Investors can use the greatschools.org search engine to find information about local schools and school systems so they can better position themselves to buy properties in areas that will appeal to buyers down the road. Real estate can be a fruitful investment, and investors who want to benefit the most from their properties will explore various factors before purchasing a home or homes. azhealthandliving.com | January 2016

EXCEL & ACHIEVE

CAREER, BUSINESS & FINANCE By Nicole McMackin, president of Irvine Technology Corp., www.irvinetechcorp.com

Benefits of an IT Assessment Outdated Computer Systems Play Havoc with the Bottom Line

Assessing technology needs can help businesses stay competitive. One of the greatest characteristics of computer technology also can be problematic. It’s ever- evolving. While that’s exciting for techies, it can be a headache for business leaders, whether they are corporate executives or small-business owners. Businesses periodically need to upgrade or replace creaky computer systems, or risk falling behind their competitors. If they try to muddle through with a cranky jalopy when everyone else moved up to the latest sports car, they may find themselves out of the race for consumer dollars. One thing companies need to remember is that as the capabilities of technology continue to rise, so do the expectations of their customers. The bar keeps being raised higher and higher in terms of how quickly and efficiently customers expect to be served. But weighing whether to invest a substantial sum in updated technology when other needs are pressing can leave management in a quandary. Is it time to junk the system entirely and start over? Can the current system be salvaged with just an update here or there? Or is everything fine – at least for now? Frankly, unless they happen to work for a high-tech company, most business leaders probably don’t consider information technology to be one of their areas of expertise. Most prefer to spend their time and energy on the other pressing matters. They look at the struggling IT system they don’t completely understand, and about all they can think about is the cost they are going to face to improve it. So they keep putting off a decision. Inaction can come with its own costs, though, such as:

Low employee morale and production. Employees will dread coming to work when they know they must do battle each day with troublesome technology. Employees want to arrive at the office, log in to the system, and get to work. An outdated system leaves them frustrated and, what’s more, production suffers when the system works too slowly or freezes up. 56 January 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

Cybersecurity threats. While technology is a great asset, it also represents a potential risk for every company. Hackers are hard at work looking for weak links in everyone’s IT security systems. An aging system provides a weaker defense against potential breaches that could damage both a company’s equipment and reputation.

Missing out on potential cost reductions. Technology can be expensive. That’s no secret. But the right technology also can be a solution to rising expenses in other areas of a company. An efficient computer system can help reduce costs and potentially increase revenues. Remember, too that downtime and outages also chip away at the profit margin. Many businesses barely function – or don’t – when their computer systems crash. Most companies with an aging system could benefit from an IT assessment that would help answer the questions that leave business leaders fretting. That would tell you how well your technology infrastructure matches up with the goals and needs of your business. A good assessment will tell you if you are spending too much or too little, and can point out ways that you can gain the most leverage from technology. But any decisions shouldn’t be about technology for the sake of technology. This isn’t like consumers lining up to buy the latest gadget-filled cellphone just because it’s the trendy thing to do. Businesses don’t need something just because it’s the newest and flashiest thing. They need what will help them succeed with their bottom line.

How to Rebuild Your Credit

By MS

Many men and women work hard to build strong credit and demonstrate their worthiness as borrowers to lenders. But sometimes an unforeseen event, such as a layoff or medical emergency, forces people to rely too heavily on credit, which can negatively affect their credit rating and make them less likely to secure favorable loans in the future. Rebuilding credit takes time. Lenders want their borrowers to have demonstrated their long-term financial responsibility, so it may take men and women who have suffered a credit setback a substantial amount of time to regain the trust of prospective lenders. But there is a way to rebuild credit and restore your financial reputation.

Examine your credit report. The first step toward rebuilding your credit is to examine where you currently are. Some credit card companies now offer monthly credit reports or credit updates free of charge to cardholders. If you do not have such a card, the Fair Credit Reporting Act permits consumers to request a free credit report once every 12 months from each of the three major credit reporting agencies (i.e., Equifax, Experian and TransUnion). Examine your credit report for any errors, and dispute such errors immediately.

Start using your cards again. Men and women who have been through the bad credit wringer may want to avoid swiping their credit cards ever again. But demonstrating your ability to use credit cards and pay your balances in full and on time is an essential part of rebuilding your credit. Use your credit cards to pay small monthly bills, such as your gym membership, and pay the balance in full each month. Over time, doing so will produce a pattern that indicates you are worthy of credit and capable of handling it responsibly.

Apply for an installment loan. Another way to demonstrate your credit worthiness to prospective lenders is to apply for and get an installment loan. If your credit mishaps are very recent, you may want to wait to apply for an installment loan until you have started to rebound and indicate you can once again pay your bills in full and on time each month. Waiting will earn you a more borrowerfriendly interest rate, and you won't be running the risk of being denied for a loan. But it's good to apply for an installment loan such as an auto loan because you can then

use that to restore your financial reputation by making monthly payments on time.

Make all of your payments. Once your credit has taken a hit and your score has sunk, lenders will look for any signs that you may still be a credit risk. Even as your score begins to rise once again, you must continue to make all of your payments on time. One skipped or missed payment is a big red flag to lenders, especially if borrowers have had credit troubles in the past. Don't let all your hard work go to waste by missing payments. Rebuilding credit is not always so easy, but many people have endured financial troubles only to re-emerge as borrowers lenders want to work with. azhealthandliving.com | January 2016

Healthy Habits that Can Have a Lasting Impact A long and healthy life is the ultimate goal for many people. While a host of factors beyond a person's control, such as genetics, impact how long that person lives and how susceptible to certain medical conditions he or she may be, there are many things men and women can do to improve their chances of living long, healthy lives.

Keep working. While many working men and women dream of the day when they can leave the daily grind behind once and for all, they might want to think more about a second career than a long, carefree retirement. A study from British researchers published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry found that each extra year that men and women work was associated with a six-week delay in the onset of dementia. While men and women may want to retire from their professions, finding second careers or volunteering close to full-time hours may improve their long-term health and quality of life.

Stay on your toes. A healthy diet is a key component of a healthy lifestyle, but diet alone is not enough to promote a long and healthy life. According to the Johns Hopkins Medicine Health Library, the risks associated with a physically inactive lifestyle are considerable. Such risks include a greater risk of developing high blood pressure and coronary heart disease and even a greater risk for certain cancers. In addition, physical inactivity can add to feelings of anxiety and depression. Inactivity tends to increase with age, so men and women aiming for long and healthy lives should make physical activity a vital part of their daily lives.

Get your whole grains. Whole grains may be another key ingredient to a long and healthy life. Numerous studies have shown that increasing whole grain consumption can help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. Researchers who conducted a systematic review of studies examining the link between whole grains and type 2 diabetes prevention in 2007 found that eating an extra two servings of whole grains per day decreased a person's risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 21 percent. That's an important finding, as additional research has found that people with diabetes have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, a neurodegenerative condition that can dramatically reduce quality of life. 60 January 2016

Visit your physician annually if not more frequently. While many people, especially those who feel healthy, are hesitant to visit their physicians, doing so may just save your life. Several diseases, including cancer and heart disease, are more effectively treated when detected early. Annual physicals and discussions with your physician may uncover a disease in its early stages when it is most treatable. Waiting until symptoms appear may not be too late to treat a condition or disease, but taking a proactive approach increases the likelihood of early detection, which increases your chances of living a long and healthy life. Healthy habits improve people's' quality of life while also increasing the likelihood that men and women live long, healthy and productive lives.

STAY HEALTHY

Exercise & Arthritis Across the country, more than 50 million people are living with doctor-diagnosed arthritis. So says the Arthritis Foundation, which projects that figure will rise to 67 million by the year 2030. Simply put, arthritis is a significant problem, one that cannot only affect a person's quality of life, but also his or her pocketbook, as the arthritis Foundation notes that working-age men and women (those between the ages of 18 and 64) who contend with arthritis are less likely to be employed than people of the same age who do not have arthritis. Arthritis is not only bad for employees, but also for employers, as it accounts for $156 billion annually in lost wages and medical expenses. Exercise may be the last thing on many arthritis sufferers' minds, but exercise can play a vital role in reducing the often-painful symptoms associated with arthritis. Among its other benefits, exercise can strengthen the muscles around arthritic joints and help men and women maintain bone strength. In addition, the Mayo Clinic notes that lack of exercise can make joints feel more painful and stiff, as a sedentary lifestyle will ultimately contribute to putting more stress on joints. Upon being diagnosed with arthritis, patients should speak with their physicians about the best way to use exercise to combat and relieve their symptoms. Some patients may require physical therapy, while others might be able to work with their physicians to develop an exercise regimen that can help reduce the severity of their symptoms and any pain that accompanies those symptoms. The following are some types of exercises that figure to play a strong role in managing arthritis and improving quality of life.

Aerobic exercises: Low-impact aerobic exercises, such

as walking and swimming, can help arthritis sufferers alleviate their symptoms and improve their overall health. Arthritis sufferers who have not exercised in a while because of their pain may have gained weight as a result, and aerobic exercise is a great way to shed extra pounds. Losing excess weight is a great way to make physical activity less taxing on your joints as well.

Range-of-motion: Range-of-motion exercises are typically

simple and don't take much time, but when done correctly, such exercises can be very effective at relieving the stiffness associated with arthritis. A physician or physical therapist might advise you to do range-of-motion exercises each day, and you may even need to do them a few times each day. 62

Adhere to this advice, continuing to perform the exercises as long as your doctor or physical therapists deem them necessary.

Strength training: As previously noted, arthritis sufferers

may feel as though lifting weights will only exacerbate their existing symptoms. But strength training will strengthen the muscles around the joints, providing more support for those joints and ultimately reducing symptoms of pain. Speak with your physician or physical therapist about appropriate strength-training activities and the importance of rest. If you experience any pain during strength-training sessions, stop immediately and report the pain to your physician. More information about managing arthritis can be found at www.arthritis.org.

How to Protect Your Vision Over the Long Haul By MS

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, eye diseases related to aging are the primary cause of vision impairment in the United States. Many people consider vision loss a natural side effect of aging, but there are ways men and women can protect their vision and reduce their risk of vision loss as they age.

Quit smoking. According to the National Eye Institute, smoking doubles a person's risk for age-related macular degeneration, or AMD. AMD is a leading cause of vision loss in men and women over the age of 50. It causes damage to the macula, which is the part of the eye needed for sharp, central vision. If the macula is damaged, vision may be blurry, distorted or dark.

Protect eyes from ultraviolet light. The American Optometric Association notes that UV-A and UV-B radiation can have adverse effects on a person's vision. A short-term effect of excessive exposure to UV radiation is photokeratitis, a painful condition that can lead to red eyes, extreme sensitivity to light, and excessive tearing. Long-term effects of such exposure include a higher risk of developing cataracts and damage to the retina, which is the part of the eye used for seeing. When spending time outdoors, always wear sunglasses that provide protection against UV-A and UV-B rays.

Maintain a healthy blood pressure. High blood pressure

often referred to as HBP or hypertension, can contribute to vision loss as a person ages. The American Heart Association notes that HBP can strain blood vessels in the eyes, causing them to narrow or bleed. HBP also can cause the optic nerve to swell, compromising a person's vision as a result. Eye damage that results from HBP is cumulative, which means the longer it goes untreated, the more likely the damage to the eye will be permanent. Men and women can maintain a healthy blood pressure by eating right, exercising regularly and sustaining a healthy weight.

Take breaks from work. Computer vision syndrome, or CVS,

is a legitimate condition that can develop when a person spends ample time staring at a computer screen. CVS can cause symptoms such as blurred vision, double vision, eye irritation and headaches. One way to reduce risk of developing CVS is to take frequent breaks from staring at the screen. A handful of 20-second breaks over the course of an hour can help prevent CVS. In addition, change lighting in the room where you work so you can reduce glare on the computer screen. azhealthandliving.com | January 2016

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called friends, red lights called enemies, caution lights called family. You will have flats called jobs. But, if you have a spare called determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith and a driver named Jesus—you will make it to a place called success.” – Author Unknown
