Give your skin a little summer love. We can all agree sagging skin is a sure sign of ageing, especially when it’s concentrated around the jaw line, neck, and eyes. But now there is a new generation skin-tightening device leading the way in the fight against sagging jowls, turkey necks, and tired eyes. is a non-surgical treatment designed to lift, tighten and firm the skin of the face and neck. It is drastically different in its tightening and lifting ability because it not only tightens skin, but also the deep muscular layers underneath. The same foundational layers typically addressed in a surgical face-lift.

GOD BLESS AMERICA
GOD BLESS YOU!
W
elcome, to Our Children Issue. We could not evolve into the individuals we are without the continued act of learning. A child starts school the moment he or she takes their first breath –the world of learning - right from wrong, good from bad- begins. What are you teaching your children - or showing them? How much of it will influence who they later in life evolve to be?
One of the Ten Commandments is Thou Shall Not Bear False Witness. In other words, we should not lie! Many will protest this when it comes to fairy tales, as we almost all are found guilty of following the majority at one point or another. However, the truth is and will always be revealed. If children first experience a disappointment in the form of a lie from a parent, then how will they continue to trust and hold on to faith Children are a gift from God - not only for us but also for the world. If you educate and instill faith in God’s blessings, to be guided by His words from the moment they take their first breath, who knows which one will be the next David, Paul or Mother Teresa.
Keith Humphreys, author and co-author of numerous books and scholarly articles, led me to this story about a childhood tradition for many and one way for parents to present the difference between fiction and fact. "My dad told me the truth about Santa when I was very little, perhaps 3 or 4. I don’t recall whether I was traumatized by the news at the time; I got over it if I was. My oldest turned 3 New Year’s Eve and was very excited about Santa Claus this past Christmas but, for whatever reason, hasn’t mentioned the Easter Bunny even though she’s been excited about the approach of Easter. My approach thus far has been to treat these characters precisely the way I do Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh and Dora the Explorer: they’re real characters but not real people. So, when she tells me that Santa has a beard and wears a red suit that’s just as true as the facts that Pooh likes honey and Dora has a friend named Boots. If, on the other hand, she asks me whether Santa Claus brought her a particular present, I tell her, no, her grandmother bought it for her. This strikes me as the right balance between letting the kids enjoy their childhood and building their trust."
Until next time,
As you begin to get ready for back-to-school time with your children and the season occupies your time please remember, as parents we are our children’s teachers, and the word of God is what we should be teaching.
Wishing You a Happy 4th! God Bless You! Here to serve,
For those wondering a way to be honest with your children about traditional characters and tales, allow them to use the free will God has given us, to choose what to believe.

Inspired by the well-heeled women of the Valley and eager to merge the couple’s entrepreneurial backgrounds with Chrissy’s love for fashion, the duo set out to create a truly unique experience in luxury consignment shopping. Visit Our New Arrival —a Giant Anteater A new arrival to Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park is a giant anteater. The species is native to Central and South America and is related to sloths. As its name suggests, giant anteaters are large. Males may reach 6-7 feet in length. They are unusually shaped animals with a long narrow skull and snout. While their mouths have limited ability to open, their long tongue is specially adapted for foraging on insects such as ants and termites; they may eat tens of thousands of insects a day. These anteaters have no teeth but their claws are large and are used to dig into termite mounds. Anteaters have relatively poor eyesight, are generally timid and solitary, and rely on their sense of smell to locate prey. Giant anteaters are at risk due to habitat loss and overhunting. o not let the formal suits and ties fool you. For a group of business professionals in the Scottsdale area, it is not all “business.” In fact, for the past 27 years, the mission of the Scottsdale 20-30 Club, a nonprofit composed of successful businessmen in their 20s and 30s, has been to provide young adults with an opportunity for personal growth, friendships, and leadership development while improving the quality of life for special needs children in the community.
“Members come from all professions and walks of life,” says Ben Hawkins, president of Scottsdale 20-30 Club. “From lawyers to real estate agents, we share the common goal of making a difference and improving the quality of life for these kids.” The group is capped at 50 members, and as the men enter their 40s, they make room for a new generation of philanthropists. Though they each have their respective careers, they all volunteer their time working hands-on with children in the community. Some of the club’s activities include Scottsdale 20-30 Fishing Derby for Children, helping kids at Camp Courage, taking members of the Boys and Girls Clubs to baseball games, donating presents to Toys for Tots and refurbishing older homes for underprivileged families.
“It’s a lot of fun for us to interact with the kids,” Hawkins says. “It makes what we are working toward more personal.” In addition to these activities, the club hosts special events that draw the community together to raise funds, and to educate citizens about the financial, medical, and emotional needs of Arizona’s children. The club’s largest event of the year is the annual NiteFlite golf tournament and gala. Some of the community’s most prominent people come out to support this event in which all proceeds benefit The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Scottsdale, Boys Hope Girls Hope and other local charities that support children in the community. Their efforts to raise awareness and support these charities have made them a driving force for the betterment of the local community where our children learn and grow. This last year alone they raised $325,000 that they gifted to 19 different charities and nonprofits. Since the clubs inception 27 years ago, they have raised and donated over $6 million.

On Aug. 2, the club will host Kids Spree, an annual event held by the Scottsdale 20-30 Club to provide clothing for over 100 children from the Scottsdale Boys and Girls Club. Each child will receive a $100 gift card to shop at Kohl's. The shopping helps underprivileged children get the items they need for going back to school. Each child is paired with a club member to help with the shopping. These shopping sprees allow the children to start the school year with new clothes, new shoes, warm winter jackets and a backpack. “It is an honor to collaborate with a group of likeminded men to provide aid to these various causes,” Joe Conner, the Scottsdale 20-30 Club’s NiteFlite chairman. “There are a lot of organizations out there that need support and whether it be financially or through volunteer work, we are motivated to help them in any way we can,” he continues. “Kids are our future and we
want to make sure that we cultivate a good environment for them to thrive.”

Collected through an automated process, platelets are the smallest, most perishable component of whole blood that is most-often required by cancer and leukemia patients. “MAX donors allow the combination of patient need, their blood type and physical attributes determine what kind of donation they give, allowing us to choose the right procedure each time they come in,” Regional Executive Director for United Blood Services/Arizona, Audrey Jennings says. “Because of their dedication as donors, thousands of lives have been saved in Arizona hospitals.” Yu Chih first became a blood donor just six years ago and already has an amazing 89 donations on record. He gave for the first time as a student at Phoenix College and now he makes it a point to give as often as he can at the donor center. Knowing that so many patients need platelet transfusions keeps him going back again and again. As a selfdriven ambassador for blood donation, United Blood Services had a star named after Yu Chin in the constellation of Hercules, the hero in the night sky. The platelet donors were honored at a private event hosted by United Blood Services, where they met Keegan Gibbs, a West Valley teen who recently battled cancer and required more than 20 lifesaving blood transfusions. “Thanks to blood donors, I fought this cancer,” Keegan says. “I’m humbled and grateful for their help in this battle.”

Pictured Left to Right: Keegan Gibbs, ChenYu Chih New and innovative technologies are ever changing how blood components are used to save patients’ lives. Traditional whole blood donations provided a mixture of red cells, plasma and platelets – each of which served a different type of patient. Automated MAX donations enable United Blood Services to isolate and collect an increased quantity of one of those components, while the remaining components are returned to the donor. Most MAX donations take a smaller blood volume from the donor than in whole blood donations, but make a bigger impact by providing increased quantities of the component most needed by hospital patients. In the past, one complete transfusion for a patient often required platelets from about 10 whole blood donors. Promoting healthy living through community outreach
M
any people have heard the saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” When it comes to living a healthy lifestyle and disease prevention, Dr. Monica Vaghela, could not agree more. “I’ve always believed that prevention is cure,” Dr. Vaghela says. “But after going to college to pursue a career in natural medicine, I decided to make it my mission to educate others about it.” After receiving a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2007, then graduating from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine a few years later, Dr. Vaghela became an ambassador of healthy living as a naturopathic physician at Rejuvena Health and Aesthetics. There she and her colleagues focus not just on looks or health, but the whole body. “Many people fill their bodies with junk food and other toxins, not recognizing that nutritional health plays the biggest role in overall health,” Dr. Vaghela says. “While they may not realize it now, they are actually damaging the body both internally and externally.” However, she believes with proper education, she can help reverse those bad habits, decreasing the chance of having chronic diseases – and she is not just teaching this to her patients.

Using her health knowledge and expertise, Dr. Vaghela is educating people of all ages both in and outside the office.
In addition to volunteering in schools, Dr. Vaghela also spends time at a Valley Sprouts Farmers Market, giving tours throughout the grocery store, discussing the health benefits of different items, teaching shoppers how to decode food labels and answer any questions related to health and nutrition.
“Twice a year, my fellow colleague’s and I volunteer time and go into select schools to give presentations about nutritional health and making healthy food choices,” she says.
“Once a month, I will spend an hour at night at a Valley Sprouts location,” Dr. Vaghela says. “It’s a great opportunity to educate the public about living and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.”
Most recently, she spent time at an East Valley elementary school where she talked about healthy eating for life.
“It’s truly a rewarding experience,” Dr. Vaghela says. “By fostering these relationships I believe I can help teach people how to develop a positive relationship with healthy food. You can lead them by your example.”

Recognizing Dyslexia Reading different types of texts, including newspapers, comics and books, can help children with dyslexia overcome some of their symptoms.
C
hildren begin learning to read early in their education. Very often, some children seem to excel at reading and writing, while others may struggle. The obstacles children struggle with may disappear as they age and grow more accustomed to reading, but no such relief comes for children struggling with dyslexia.
The Mayo Clinic defines dyslexia as a learning disorder characterized by difficulty reading. It is a common condition and does not mean a child has subpar vision or intelligence. Dyslexia often goes undiagnosed, and many children reach adulthood before realizing they are dyslexic. According to Dyslexia Health, 70 to 80 percent of people with poor reading skills are likely to be dyslexic, and dyslexia is the most common cause of difficulties with reading, spelling and writing. Dyslexia affects people in various ways. While some may experience only minor symptoms, others may have greater difficulties, including problems with grammar, recognizing left from right and trouble with complex language skills. Without help, children with dyslexia can easily grow discouraged with their studies. However, with therapy, many children can learn to work around their dyslexia.
Causes of dyslexia Dyslexia has been linked to improper genetic development in the brain. It tends to run in families and affects the parts of the brain responsible for language development. There is a greater risk.
Symptoms Very often, it is difficult to recognize dyslexia before a child 26 July 2014 | azhealthandliving.com
enters school. There may be some early clues, but these are not always definitive. Potential clues include learning to talk late, having difficulty learning new words and exhibiting difficulty-rhyming words. School-aged children may have trouble with sequences, following commands in order, reading at the recommended level, processing and understanding, and/or seeing or writing letters or words in reverse. As children with dyslexia age, they may have difficulty summarizing stories, managing time or learning a foreign language.
Treatment There are no medications to correct the underlying brain abnormality that doctors feel causes dyslexia. However, there are various treatment methods. Practice and repetition are some of the hallmarks of dyslexia therapy. Rather than standard lessons, individuals with dyslexia may need multisensory lessons that combine sight, touch, and sounds when introducing new concepts. Screen readers and audio books can also help children learn how to read more effectively. In the classroom, children may need more time to complete assignments. Teachers should be made aware of a dyslexia diagnosis so they can work with students and parents to develop a learning system that works. Practicing reading different types of texts also can help. Dyslexia is a common learning disability that affects many children and adults. However, therapy and emotional support can help people with dyslexia overcome their disabilities.
How to Help Children Adapt to Eyeglasses
By MS
Understanding that he or she needs to wear glasses does not always translate into a child's willingness to actually wear those glasses, as peer pressure remains an obstacle when encouraging children to embrace their eyeglasses. Parents may find it challenging to adjust a child to wearing eyeglasses, but there are a few strategies to help make that transition go more smoothly.
Shop together Children may be more receptive to eyeglasses if they get to choose those glasses. Glasses are personal and should be sized according to the wearer's face. Children should select various pairs of glasses they like and try them on. Narrow down the pairs based on comfort, look and price. If your child likes a particular pair of glasses, it may be worth spending a few extra dollars for those frames, as children are more likely to wear glasses they like.
Move over "Coke bottle lenses" The eyeglasses of the past are much different from the eyeglasses of the present. Lens and frame technology has transformed the look and feel of eyeglasses. Lenses may be thinner and less apparent than ever before. Eyeglass manufacturers have developed frames that are bendable or invisible thanks to frameless lenses. Some lenses reduce glare, and others tint when touched by sunlight.
Present positive images of role models Children may be quicker to warm to eyeglasses if parents showcase a few of the many worthy role models who wear glasses, and do so with style.
Point out the benefits Highlight activities that will be improved by better vision as they relate to your children’s interests. Perhaps glasses will make gaming easier. Point out to children who love to read how much more comfortable they are now that they can see the words on the page more easily. When it comes to the family athlete, discuss how much easier it is to see the ball now that your budding athlete is wearing eyeglasses. azhealthandliving.com |July 2014

Does Your Child Need Speech Therapy?
P
arents of preschool and kindergarteners may be made aware of speech issues that may require therapy to address. The good news is that children often make tremendous strides once enrolled in speech therapy. Although determining if a child needs speech therapy can sometimes be confusing and take some effort and testing, parents who receive such a diagnosis about their children will need to focus on some skills that can alleviate speech concerns.
Articulation Many children require speech therapy because of a speech delay or an issue with articulating. This relates to the clarity of speech sounds and overall speech. A child's speech begins with initial sounds as they mimic the adults around them, which will then form words and phrases. It is common for young children who have difficulty with certain speech sounds to substitute easier sounds for certain letters or sound blends. However, if inconsistent speech articulation or improper sound usage extends beyond a certain age, this may require treatment. 28
July 2014 | azhealthandliving.com
Fluency and resonance Some children receive speech therapy due to disorders like stuttering or prolonging sounds and syllables. When the flow of speech is interrupted by abnormal stoppages or repetition, this can be distracting to both the child and those around him or her. Some have problems with the pitch, volume or quality of their voice. These problems can distract listeners from what is being said, making it difficult to communicate.
Apraxia According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, childhood apraxia of speech, or CAS, is a motor speech disorder. Children with CAS have problems saying sounds, syllables and words. The brain has difficulty moving the mouth for speech. The child knows what he or she wants to say, but the brain does not send the correct message to move the muscles accordingly. Children with CAS are typically assessed earlier than school age.
Seeking therapy Parents who suspect their child has a speech-language concern should first consult with a pediatrician and talk to their child's teacher. If the speech problem is not causing any learning difficulty or making it hard for teachers and fellow students to understand the child, intervention may not be necessary. However, if the child is embarrassed or getting frustrated with those who do not understand him or her, it may be in the student's best interest to be assessed. Speech-language pathologists are trained in speech therapy and are most qualified to make assessments of a child's speech abilities. This person will provide a thorough articulation assessment and conduct a medical history inquiry to determine if there is a need for treatment. A good speech pathologist will conduct an evaluation in a way that is comfortable for the child. Toys and games may be part of the assessment. Sometimes parents are allowed to remain in the room. Physical skills, vocabulary, and grammar also will be checked. Once the source of the problem has been identified, a therapist can develop a treatment plan to fix some of the problems. Homework exercises can help parents continue lessons between therapy sessions.
Many parents opt to work with a speech-language pathologist one-on-one. These services may be covered through a health insurance plan. School districts may offer low or no-cost speech therapy for students who need speech assistance. These may be conducted in solo sessions or as part of a group. Parents should inquire about speech testing at their child's school and if any services are offered. azhealthandliving.com

How to Put Your Inner Child in Time-Out
T
he human brain is a wonder of the universe, but our understanding of it can seem contradictory. On the one hand, we are often told of those crucial years that our brain develops in childhood, when we are rapidly progressing in development of our language, other skills, and our preadolescent and teenage years, when our brains undergo a sort of second Big Bang of learning. However, although it may seem that the brain is pretty much set by adulthood, it remains malleable throughout adulthood; it continues to change as we learn and adapt. Most of us are unaware that elements of our inner child’s development are constantly tugging at us, and we do not have a clue that it is happening. In Jungian therapy there is a concept called the dark side, or shadow side, the place in our unconscious to which certain feelings and thoughts are banished because they do not support our image of ourselves. That is our inner child responding to the emotional pain we experienced and interpreted with the limited understanding we had when we were very young. It continues to steer our reactions and behavior as adults, often in inappropriate ways. Awareness creates an opportunity for change. Here are several ways our adult brain can take command of the inner child.
Recognize the elements of your self-identity that keep you trapped. Our identity – how we want the world to see us – develops, in part, as a response to avoiding pain. 30 July 2014 | azhealthandliving.com
Our identity may change from one situation to another (in the same way a chameleon changes its body color to match its surroundings) as we slip on the persona we believe is expected in a particular environment or social setting. This automatic behavior is the opposite of making mindful choices, and it robs us of the joy of living in the moment and inhibits spontaneity.
Be aware of when you are acting. Many of us live our lives as though we are playing parts in various movies, navigating different storylines every day. You may be the righteous Clint Eastwood manager at work and then shift into the town drunk during happy hour, and later the loving husband and father during brunch the following weekend morning. When you are playing these roles, you are not in the present.
Be skeptical of what the voice in your head may tell you. It is not easy to recognize and quiet the mental
chatter associated with the different roles we play. We have become so accustomed to the voice in our head that we do not realize its messages are programmed – and not necessarily the truth. Is your voice telling you to feel guilty? Ashamed? Angry? Is that rational? If not, it may be your inner child acting out of a childlike fear. Instead of simply responding to what we are hardwired to think and react, we can hear, in mindful repose, those promptings as simply chatter. When you are mindful, the inner child’s chatter can be seen for what it is, and you will be free to take a more mature direction in your day-to-day living.

Steering teens in the right direction
By Ryan D. Pearson, author of The Element Series
Change Your Thoughts. Change Your Words. Change Your World. Teens, who have experienced life only as children, suddenly find themselves in very adult circumstances in high school – that last step toward adulthood. For many gifted, talented, sensitive or otherwise misunderstood teens, here are a few tips for surviving this last step toward independence.
Embrace what makes you different. Perhaps the most
important struggle a teenager faces is self-acceptance. Many may believe that that straight-A, all-star jock with a perfect complexion has it made. Meanwhile, he may be experiencing his own inner turmoil. If you care about things no one else seems to care about; if you’re better at chess than football; if you think you don’t fit the mold of “pretty” or “handsome” – you might just be on the path to happiness. There is only one you; do not be afraid of who you are.
Perhaps the greatest commencement address. While life is just beginning after high school and college, it is rarely easy – that is the thrust of George Foster Wallace’s 2005 speech to the graduates of Kenyon College. Wallace, a giant of contemporary literature, touches on some of the most important adult challenges: the potential loneliness of adult life, the importance of being well-adjusted and the difficulty of empathy – Think about it: There is no experience you’ve had that you were not at the absolute center of.
You can change! A depressing mindset for unhappy high
school students involves the idea that nothing about one’s experience will change. Everything changes – this is the one rule of life you can count on. Teens that go the villainous route often have an attitude that nothing about them or the world is going to be different unless they intervene with extreme behavior. In reality, one or two key shifts in thinking can change the course in a young person’s life trajectory. Friends, parents, and educators have the best access for helping a troubled teen to “see the light.” 32

Q How can integrative neurology help
A. Astigmatism means that the focusing elements of your eye (cornea and lens) are shaped more like a football than a spherical basketball. As a result of this asymmetry, light enters the eye being focused at different points instead of a single focused point. Most individuals with astigmatism are born with this asymmetry, and the most common way to compensate for astigmatism is through glasses that will neutralize this asymmetry. Glasses or contacts, however, are uncomfortable or inconvenient for many. If one wants to strengthen vision so as not to depend on glasses, Lasik or one of the variations, Laser Vision Correction is an excellent solution.
A. Integrative neurology combines the
vision is blurry because I have astigmatism; what does that mean?
The Excimer laser corrects the problem by applying laser energy to the cornea in such a way as to neutralize the asymmetry and change the cornea from the football shape to a normal spherical basketball shape. For individuals who are candidates for cataract surgery, an advanced “Toric” implant can be utilized during the procedure to also neutralize pre-existing astigmatism, and this technique can be an option for patients to improve their vision to the point of not needing glasses. Irregular astigmatism can also be a sign of a disease called keratoconus. Glasses or contacts often are not good options for this problem, but newer technologies such as Intracorneal Ring Segments can make quite an improvement.

Chronic prostatitis, also known as chronic pelvic pain syndrome, is one of the most common types of prostate disorders in men. Unlike acute prostatitis, which is commonly caused by an infection, the cause of chronic prostatitis is uncertain. Researchers believe that chronic prostate pain and inflammation is a result of the interplay between the hormonal, immune and nervous systems. The nervous system’s involvement offers a potential therapeutic window for the treatment of this common condition.
Q. What are some basics I should
know about breast implants if I am considering them? A. There are three placement sites of the implants generally used by the cosmetic surgeon performing breast augmentation. They are Under the Muscle Implant, Above the Muscle Implant, and Partial Placement in Between. The placement location of the breast implant is determined by the cosmetic surgeon and varies with the selection of the implant. Each placement site has its own advantages and disadvantages, which your cosmetic surgeon will discuss during your consultation. Typically, a breast implant can be placed either under the breast tissue (over the muscle) or under the breast muscle (below the breast tissue), combined with utilizing the minimum scarring approach, which entails making the incisions along the armpit (transaxillary incision), along the areola, or under the breast at the crease. It will depend on your unique situation and the cosmetic surgeon's preference.
Studies published in Current Urology Reports and Urology International confirm the beneficial treatment effects of this neurologically based therapy in men suffering from chronic prostate and pelvic pain A technique called neural modulation involves stimulating the tibial nerve in the leg to influence prostatitis. The researchers found a majority of men receiving actual nerve stimulation compared to placebo had at least a 50 percent reduction in their prostate symptoms. Similarly, acupuncture applied to the lower back can be used to reduce the pain and inflammation within the prostate. Acupuncture was shown to reduce chemicals causing pain and inflammation called cytokines in the prostate. Several herbs have proven to reduce the symptoms of chronic prostate inflammation. The best known is Saw Palmetto, which has a long history of use in prostate problems. Less well-known natural substances with research to support their use in prostate issues are Pumpkin Seed Oil and Stinging Nettle herb.

prevention for early periodontal care as well as non-surgical care with our state-of-theart laser treatments. Many of us with children find that speech development is affected, such as lisping, with chronic clenching and grinding of their teeth. This usually results in premature wear and potential cavities. Those concerns along with crowding, overbites and poor alignment can be corrected most often without braces when diagnosed early. The next time you peek into your child’s mouth you may notice wear, crowding and lip biting as early as 3 years old. This is the optimum time to have your child evaluated for easy steps to prevent and correct what may be a long-term problem before it becomes worse. Do not wait until all the permanent teeth are present to correct misalignments and clenching issues because these children typically have more stable and long lasting corrections without relapse when treated early. We offer complimentary orthodontic evaluations to help you avoid costly braces with early intervention. time to make those back-to-school preparations. The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends an eye exam before heading back to school for those who have never had one or those who have not had an eye exam in two years. Good vision is an integral part of the learning process and should be evaluated to allow a child their best chance of academic success. Approximately 86 percent of children start school never having an eye examination. There is a very strong correlation between vision and learning. A majority of learning comes through the eyes. It is important to note that good vision is not only that a child can see 20/20, but also that the eyes have good visual function. That means are the eyes working properly and are looking at the same place at the same time. Many children with “learning difficulties” have 20/20 vision in each eye, what they lack is the ability of the eyes to working well together. Parents and teachers should be aware of a few things, other than blurred vision that may indicate a visual problem. Some of the most common things are: ●
Headaches during or after homework

can result from swollen tonsils and/or adenoids, malocclusion (misalignment of the teeth) or swollen nasal passages. Children who suffer from sleep-disordered breathing do not sleep well at night. Often, they cannot enter REM sleep because they are unable to get into a deep sleep without their body forcing them awake when their airway becomes obstructed.
As the body drifts to sleep, the airway relaxes. A healthy airway should not relax, but if the child has swollen tonsils or nasal problems, this relaxation can obstruct the airway and breathing causing the brain to wake up the body, resulting in excessive tiredness and decreased concentration. Sleep-disordered breathing in children may manifest as strange positions while sleeping (such as hanging their head off the edge of the bed or propping it up on pillows in order to be in the right position to breathe), overall crabbiness, headaches, difficulty waking and/or bedwetting. It may also manifest itself as trouble concentrating—sometimesserious conditions like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). However, not every child who has trouble concentrating is automatically suffering from ADHD. Trouble concentrating can be caused by everything from immaturity to a short attention span. Nevertheless, diagnoses of ADHD have risen exponentially in the last few years, as has the prescription of such drugs as Ritalin.

Q. How manual therapy and selfstretching help your back pain?
A. Chronic low back pain is a common
musculoskeletal condition affects older age population. A large percentage of low back pain is started from complaints of muscular pain. A general cause of muscle pain is changes of the body mechanic, which generate adhesion and stiffness. These changes accumulate together after long period, and then you feel your movements become restricted. You do not feel well because of increased pain due to poor circulation and reduced oxygen flow, which irritate your nervous system. Manual therapies and self-stretching work on the areas of the adhesion and stiffness. Manual therapies are usually specified as soft tissue massage, passive stretching and Tui Na ( also known as meridian therapy based on the principle of Oriental medicine) manual therapies seek to break the adhesion between muscle cells, and the goals of self stretching is to improve movement of the body parts affected by the pain. There are more about what cause chronic low back pain. According to the National Insititute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, those risk factors that increase chance of low back pain include age, various diseases, diet, occupation, race and heredity. If you wonder whether your pain is a muscular issue or other factor and whether or not manual therapies and stretching could help, I recommend speaking with a health care practitioner to determine the major cause of your low back pain.

Q. What is the stomach flu? A. Also called the “24 hour bug” or the stomach flu, viral gastroenteritis often hits entire families during the summer. This group of viruses is not related to the flu that attacks the respiratory system, but the viruses can cause miserable fevers and body aches. For those with the flu, symptoms can vary. Sometimes vomiting and nausea dominate sometimes diarrhea and sometimes both. For some reason, most viral gastroenteritis seems to last only one to two days. However, the virus can continue to be contagious in the stool for weeks afterward. The rotavirus, against which infants are vaccinated, can often last for nine days and can cause fluid loss. There is no specific treatment for the stomach flu, although doctors may give anti-nausea or anti-diarrheal medications. The most important complication of viral gastroenteritis is dehydration, which can often be life threatening in children. Electrolyte solutions given by mouth (and kept down) are the best way to keep children hydrated, but some children may need to be rehydrated by IV in the emergency room or in the hospital. If your child has significant dehydration, the skin over their knuckles may lose turgor, remaining up after being pinched. They may have very dry mouths, and lose their energy and their ability to urinate and produce tears. If your child has these symptoms after a bout of diarrhea and/or vomiting, take them to see a physician right away.

Q. How does the TitanTM Laser improve skin laxity? A. TitanTM Laser is a non-surgical, noninvasive and non-ablative skin tightening procedure with no downtime.
When the skin ages, collagen fibers break down and stretch resulting in sagging skin. The TitanTM Laser works by sending infrared light and heat below the surface of the skin into the collagen layer causing the collagen to contract and thicken. Additionally, the infrared heat causes changes in the dermal layer of the skin that result in the production of new collagen. TitanTM is the only laser on the market that can evenly deliver energy into the deepest layers of the skin and effectively stimulate collagen. TitanTM triggers new collagen growth while also causing existing collagen to tighten and firm. Therefore, you are producing more collagen as well as tightening what you have. While a surgical facelift provides the most dramatic age-diminishing results, surgery requires downtime for recovery. TitanTM is a great option for those who are not ready to undergo a surgical facelift or are unable to take timeout of their lives for the postop recovery period. Because facelift surgery does not affect the tissue structures that cause the skin to expand, wrinkle, and sag in the first place, TitanTM is also a great adjunctive treatment for patients who have had or are planning to have a surgical facelift. TitanTM, as well other treatments, products and procedures to help you take years off your look, are provided at our clinic Dermacare Cosmetic Surgery.

The experimental group watched a series of screens on their computers, where a blue square appeared in various positions on a black background for a set amount of seconds. While this happened, the trainees also heard a series of letters that were read out at the same time. At first, the students had to say if either the screen or the letter matched those that popped up two cycles ago. The cycles increased or decreased depending on how well the students performed the task.
Our therapist, Janine Jarava-Crump, LMT, LPN, AS, has redirected her care toward a holistic path of pain management and has chosen to be a part of a healing team of pain specialists. Holistic nursing is a specialty practice (The American Holistic Nurses Association, www.ahna.org) that draws on nursing knowledge, theories, expertise, and to guide nurses in becoming therapeutic partners with the people in their care. She graduated from Arizona College and serves on the Board of Advisors at Arizona College, Massage Therapy Program in Glendale. Janine has used massage in her practice to help alleviate her patients of pain, constipation related to medications and improve mobility. Massage therapy is beneficial in alleviating medical conditions such as fibromyalgia, arthritis, migraines, back and neck injuries and many other chronic illnesses. We see you as a whole person.
In the final phase of the study, the participants in the experimental group did significantly better on the fluid intelligence test (the ability to deal with new challenges and new problems that we encounter for the first time). While there are many excellent programs available to exercise your brain, the “n-back” activity can be accessed free. Furthermore, the researchers found that the improvements were dose-dependent: the more they trained, the larger the gain on fluid intelligence.
A. The primary causes of acne in adolescent
years is hormonal fluctuations associated with puberty, an increase in oil production, allowing for bacterial proliferate and the resulting decrease in the exfoliating process leading to clogged pores. The rambunctious bacterial growth in the oil gland then stimulates the body to mount an immune response creating redness, inflammation and pus causing the dreaded pimple. Topical/oral treatments are aimed at these factors.
Controlling raging teen hormones, however, is not easy. When treating teen acne it is important to consider medical intervention as quickly as possible, to prevent worsening and permanent scarring. A healthy skin care regimen for teens focuses on decreasing oil, exfoliating the skin, moisturizing and decreasing inflammation and bacteria. The best products for this are those that contain Retin-A, benzoyl peroxide and salicylic/glycolic acid. Moisturizers with anti-inflammatory agents such as polyphenols, (green tea extracts) or medical grade products are best as they are non-comedogenic (free of heavy oils) and most will have acne-fighting botanicals with anti-inflammatory agents. Other medical interventions may be helpful, such as chemical peels, acne facials, Blu-U light treatments, lasers and alternatives to Accutane, such as Photo Dynamic Therapy (PDT). Assessing internal factors is also key to improvement. With the combination of topical and in-office treatments, teen acne can be managed and long-term effects may be avoided. If scarring has already occurred then laser treatments are extremely beneficial at minimizing the depth and severity of the scarring. Earlier intervention is best since the more youthful collagen cells can respond better to laser stimulation, thus providing the best outcome of eliminating the scars appearance.

BUSINESS TALK
Q. Why should families make an evening trip to Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium? A. An evening visit to Wildlife World not only gives families a break from triple digit temperatures, it saves money too. Aquariumonly admission after 5 p.m. is significantly reduced. Plus, the air-conditioned four-building aquarium complex features hundreds of exotic fish, and even some birds like penguins, reptiles and the only marine mammals in the state. Each aquarium building has a unique theme: Together, these exhibits feature more than 100 species of fish, indoor/outdoor/underwater viewing. Featuring playful otters, a stingray touch tank, sharks, piranha, Caribbean flamingos, moray eels, a rare albino alligator and other crocodilians, tide pool touch tanks with sea stars and horseshoe crabs, the state's only displays of penguins and California sea lions. Best of all, families can enjoy a great barbecue dinner and a cold drink at Dillon’s KC style BBQ restaurant at the aquarium. A delicious dinner while seated next to the giant shark tank at Dillon's, followed by a relaxing stroll through the aquarium grounds during the evening hours, which makes for a great family outing or a unique date night for couples. Construction on our next major expansion focused on species from “The Americas" is progressing on schedule. The design and permit to develop about a 15-acre parcel on the zoo's current southern border just east of the state route 303 took over a year. We anticipate a grand opening of late fall, 2015. The Americas will feature species found throughout North, Central and South America including bears, mountain lion, primates, reptiles, jaguars, wolves and much more. The exhibits will also have four new ride attractions and additional dining options for guests.
Q. Why do we love Wheatgrass? A. Wheatgrass powder is a green food valued by health-conscious individuals as a great natural source of nutrients. Wheatgrass, 70 percent chlorophyll, is considered one of the best sources of living chlorophyll available and is high in oxygen. The brain and all body tissues function at optimal level in a highly oxygenated environment. By increasing the body oxygenation, you help offset toxins and pollutants. Drinking wheatgrass helps your body build red blood cells, which carry oxygen to every cell. A safe nutrient, wheatgrass helps protect the lungs from air pollutants and has been found to dissolve scars formed in the lungs. In addition, it helps wash drug deposits from the body, purifies the blood, counteracts body acids and stimulates circulation and skin health. When taken before meals, it suppresses appetite and aids in weight loss. Nutrient-rich wheatgrass contains 17 amino acids, building blocks of protein, essential elements used for building muscle tissue. Wheatgrass helps to increase the enzyme level in cells aiding in the rejuvenation of the body and metabolism of nutrients. When you drink good quality wheatgrass powder, your body may experience results such as increased energy and mental alertness, steadier nerves, reduced inflammation and overall sense of increased well-being. Live blood cell analysis has shown that 20 minutes after taking our wheatgrass, red blood cells are energized and there is no cell clustering. Experience Best Organic Wheatgrass with roots and leaves combined and feel the benefits of a healthier lifestyle.

A. The following is a list of questions you should ask when interviewing a home care company: Are all caregivers employees of the company? Have all caregivers had a criminal background check? Have all caregivers had a TB test? Who supervises the caregivers? Does the company carry liability insurance? Does the company maintain workers' compensation insurance? Does the company comply with all mandatory IRS, Federal and State tax laws? Are employees bonded? Are caregivers trained to provide the level of care you are seeking? Is someone who is employed by the company on-call 24 hours per day? Is the owner accessible by telephone or in person? Q. Why should I use the LaserTouchOne? A. The medical world is just now awakening to the healing powers of low-level light laser and low-level micro current. This is the makeup of the LaserTouchOne. What makes it so unique is it works to repair damaged cells and normalize their function, which initiates a healing process. When cells are healthy, pain dissipates.
Doctors, universities and professional sports teams are using the LaserTouchOne with great success. Pro golfers love it. WHY? It works for them. Patients and players recover much faster and get back to doing what they do. More than 34 million people are now addicted to prescription drugs. Why is that? Pain medication mask the message to the brain, but it doesn’t address the cause of the pain. The LaserTouchOne identifies the source and works to relieve the pain by healing the injured tissue. I had three bulging disc and sciatica pain down my leg when a pain specialist introduced me to LaserTouchOne. Within two weeks, of using LaserTouchOne I was playing golf again with no pain and I am not an isolated case. Barbara in Sun City West had two neck operations years ago, but still has had her pain for the last 42 years. An RN, she told me she doubts that the LaserTouchOne would help her, but she felt she wanted to try it. Six weeks later she called me to say thanks and that I had given her her life back. There are thousands of stories like this from people who have used the LaserTouchOne. All you have to do is make a call to see if it will help you. There is no charge to do this. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. If you are skeptical, I want to hear from you. If you feel hopeless, I want to hear from you. – Bill Yvon LaserTouchOne 602.403.4185
Q. What are some of the differences Q. Is there a difference between a between analog and digital hearing aids?
Medicare Supplement and a Medicare Advantage plan?
A. Analog hearing aids amplify sound by increasing the intensity of the sound waves received. This type of instrument is commonly referred to as a standard amplifier. It takes the sound that you are unable to hear and simply makes it loud enough for you to hear.
A. There are great differences between the
There are many problems associated with the effects of living with hearing loss over time, including recruitment and speech discrimination. Recruitment causes the perception of a sound to be intense due to not being able to hear that sound over a period of time. Speech discrimination can occur when someone has a problem understanding particular speech sounds due to their inability to hear those sounds over time. Other problems associated with analog instruments are sometimes due to a wearer’s inability to pick out speech in noise. Digital hearing aid technology allows the hearing aid to “sample” sound by breaking the different signals into groups of numbers. The instrument can process these numbers to make adjustments that can assist with volume perception, signal to noise ratio, and even help prevent unwanted feedback or squealing. Most digital hearing aids are also programmable, which allows recalibration for future use as the wearer’s needs change. This results in a longer life expectancy for the instrument itself. Hearing aid technology is moving forward at the speed of sound. The overall satisfaction rate of hearing aid wearers has improved drastically in the last 5-10 years.

two and understanding those differences will help you make the right decision concerning your health care. To help explain, let us start with the basics. Medicare is provided in two ways, directly by the federal government or by private insurance companies that have been approved by the federal government. If you receive Medicare Parts A & B directly from the government, it is referred to as “Original” or “Traditional” Medicare. Under Original Medicare, you will receive services by those who “accept” Medicare. When services are rendered, your Medicare card is presented and the federal government pays for those services on a fee-for-service basis. However, Original Medicare has deductibles and co-insurance costs that the beneficiary is responsible for paying. When purchased, a Medicare Supplement (also known as Medigap) will reduce or eliminate the out-of-pocket costs associated with Original Medicare. A Medicare Supplement will always be the second payer to Medicare. If you receive Medicare Parts A & B from a private insurance company, it is referred to as a Medicare Advantage plan. Many Advantage plans in Arizona require no monthly premium or deductibles to satisfy. Most plans include prescription drug coverage at no additional cost. Each plan determines copays, and co-insurance amounts. In addition, most Advantage plans require their members to receive services from a network of contracted doctors. When services are rendered, the plan card, not a Medicare card is presented. – Tina Borges TRB Insurance Service 602.758.8998 azhealthandliving.com | July 2014

Ways to Give Your Teen Some Freedom
Teenagers pose many dilemmas for parents, and one of the biggest is determining how much freedom to allow. There is such a fine line – they have one foot in childhood and the other in adulthood, so you cannot completely trust their decision-making. Yet, you need to allow them some independence because in a very short time, they will be adults—and let us be honest, life is better when your teen is happy. It is nice to see them looking forward to something like a friend’s party or a weekend camping trip. Figuring out how to balance their need for a measure of freedom and independence against a parent’s concern for safety can be difficult. It is important for teens to be social, but as teenagers, they have a tendency to test their boundaries, which can lead to trouble. The good news is there are ways to give your teen the freedom that he or she needs, and the peace of mind you require.
Here are a few solutions: Reward Responsibility. If your teen has already proven himself or herself to be reliable and punctual with multiple responsibilities – completing schoolwork in a timely manner; diligent with extracurricular activities like sports, band or theater; or has responded well to after-school employment – it is time to give him or her the benefit of the doubt when it comes to fun. Make it clear, your trusting them to use good judgment because they have earned that trust. However, trust can also be lost.
Set the example of consistency. Predictability is good 44

when it comes to raising children, especially in terms of personifying virtues like honesty, punctuality and reliability. Teenagers are keenly aware of hypocrisy and are liable to use a parent’s contradictions against them in rationalizing bad behavior. The “do as I say, not as I do” rule may be convenient, but teens see through it. Use a calendar, perhaps on your refrigerator or sync schedules on your family’s smartphones, to encourage everyone to show up at expected times. If someone is going to be late, have a system in place for sending appropriate notification.
Do not be strangers. Most parents assume they know
who their child is, but teens are our most rapidly changing family members. They are eager to establish their own identities and try new experiences in their run-up to adulthood. Who are the most relevant people in their lives, and do you know his or her friends? The more a group of friends knows the teen friend’s parents, the more responsibility those friends will feel in honoring the parent’s rules.

It is an economical solution for families that occasionally need to be able to pinpoint someone’s location but do not want to download software to their phone or spend a lot of money on hardware. Users pay a minimum of $19.95 for 30 locates and when they need to find the phone – and the person to whom it is attached – they simply log in to the website, where tracking is instantaneous and displayed on a satellite-view map.
Kid & Chores
By Dr. James G. Wellborn, author of Raising Teens in the 21st Century: A Practical Guide to Effective Parenting
Like so many parental expectations and requirements, getting your kid in the habit of doing chores will help prepare them for the real world. Here are some of the benefits children derive from assigned chores. Responsibility. When you make a mess, YOU are obligated to clean it up. The most straightforward reason your children need to do chores is to drive the point home that he or she is responsible for their actions in the world. Personal Obligation. When you live with other people, you are obliged to contribute to the general upkeep of common living areas. Chores help your kid learn to pull her own weight when it comes to keeping shared spaces clean. Organization and Prioritizing. Chores provide the chance for your kid to practice making time for unavoidable like routine maintenance in their schedule of otherwise fun or meaningful activities. This helps them learn how to plan, organize, prioritize and suffer. Sensitivity for others. Chores provide your children with a clear message that the world does not revolve around them and they need to take others’ feelings and sensibilities into consideration. Pride in a job well done. It is important to take pride in even the most insignificant tasks. Chores help your children learn that every task, however base, is an opportunity to work their hardest and do their best. (The expression on their face when you feed them this line is priceless.) Self-sufficiency. OK, this reason really is not that important. If your kid needs a lot of practice before he can skillfully take out the trash or sweep the floor, you have much bigger challenges than getting chores done. Like so many time-honored parental expectations, household chores have a value more significant than the practical issue of household maintenance. That said, what is the most important reason children should do chores? Because you said so, of course. azhealthandliving.com |July 2014

Identifying & Preventing Cyberbullying
efore social media became so prevalent, instances of bullying were somewhat easy to recognize. However, with a good majority of children now engaged in digital networking and social media, bullying may not end with the ringing of the school bell, and evidence of bullying may not be so readily apparent. According to i-SAFE foundation’s Cyberbullying statistics over half of adolescents and teens have been bullied online, and about the same number have engaged in cyberbullying. More than 80 percent of teens use a mobile phone regularly, making it the most popular form of technology and a common medium for repeated cyberbullying. Cyberbullying takes place through electronic technology and differs from traditional forms of bullying. It can occur via text messaging, blogging, updates to social media sites and/or phone conversations. What makes cyberbullying more difficult to detect and remedy than traditional bullying is that sometimes this type of bullying is veiled in secrecy. Those who engage in cyberbullying can create aliases and accounts under false names, allowing them to covertly engage in bullying behavior. As a result, tracking down bullies can be challenging. Here are several ways parents and children can help put a stop to cyberbullying.
Hold back on purchasing a smartphone or choose one with very limited features. Some schools set strict
limits on phone usage at school, and children who go only from school to home and vice versa may not have the need for an "emergency phone" that can open up a window for trouble.
Adolescents and teens should feel comfortable talking with their parents without the fear of reprimand. Otherwise, they may hide instances of cyberbullying or not know how to broach sensitive topics like bullying. Parents can engage in conversation with their children often and stress that the doors of communication are always open.
Be Aware. Kids should be made aware that cyberbullying
is a very real and is not just other children having fun or joking. If behavior is repetitive and hurtful, it should be made public and addressed.
Monitor and limit personal accounts. Some smartphone
and tablet applications can be mirrored on the main account, 46 July 2014 | azhealthandliving.com
Adults should remain diligent in monitoring what children are doing online. Bullying can take place through digital devices, such as mobile phones. enabling parents to see incoming text or video messages.
Place laptops and computers in a shared space so that usage can be monitored. Parents can restrict tablet or smartphone usage to public areas.
Advise children not to share personal information online. Bullies may use social media sites to gather
sensitive information about a person to use it against them. Children should be urged to keep passwords secret and never give information such as birthdays, phone numbers, and addresses to people who are not close friends. Friend lists should be restricted to only those people students interact with frequently to minimize the chance for bullying or other inappropriate behavior. Teens who have been bullied can keep evidence of the bullying and may benefit from talking with a counselor. Cyberbullying is a growing concern for educators and parents and has far-reaching implications. Getting smart about this phenomenon can help staunch new cases of online bullying.
Homesickness at Summer Camp
By Ian Brassett of Pali Adventures (www.paliadventures.com)
very camper and even most camp staff members (if they are being truly honest) get homesick from time to time during the summer. It is not unnatural for a child to feel isolated and alone, miss the comfort and security of their home, dog, parents and even their siblings.
E
Let go. You sent your child away to camp because it is fun, yes, but also to provide your child with an opportunity for growth in a safe, caring environment.
Experiencing homesickness is actually one of the true benefits of a summer camp stay. It causes campers to grow, expand their limits, and develop alternate support systems away from home.
Do not panic. If the camp calls you and lets you know that your child is having adjustment issues beyond the normal, help them by giving valuable insights on your child and their personality. A good camp will work with your child.
How can parents help their child in this process?
Do not speak with your child. Hearing a voice from home is enough to trigger a rush of homesickness in even the most well adjusted camper. Send letters encouraging them.
What to do before camp begins. Many times campers
will arrive at camp pre-disposed to experience a difficult transition. Parents will unknowingly set their child up for feeling homesick. Using statements like, “The home will be empty without you,” or, “I don’t know what I’ll do without you,” while well-intentioned and heartfelt, will ensure the child will have guilty feelings if they start having a great time at camp. Show faith in your child and the camp by creating excitement about camp.
Do not give your child an escape clause! This may
sound harsh, however, if you are sending your child to camp with the phrase, “give it a try, if you don’t like it, I’ll come and pick you up” – save yourself, the camp and the child the time, effort, and energy and do not send the child to camp! They will already know that you will “rescue” them. It will not matter how friendly the staff are or how incredible the activities could be - giving a child an “out” will backfire more often than not.
What to do once your child is at camp
If the camp thinks that it is a good idea for you to speak to your child, I can only offer one piece of advice, one phrase to use that I have seen work 99 percent of the time. Take a deep breath and repeat, “You are not coming home, you made a commitment to go to camp, and that is what you will do. You wanted to go to camp. We will pick you up at the end of the session. I love you. I believe you will have a great time at camp.” Then hang up! This might be the hardest call you will ever make. Your child will talk about how miserable they are! Children will say anything to get home and they will always attack the parent that they think will buckle under the pressure! If that’s you, give the phone to your spouse! Allow your child the freedom to find himself. Make new friends. Find their personality. Find their strength. Find their courage. Find their self-confidence and self-belief. azhealthandliving.com | July 2014

A 2009 study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that children who routinely ate a diet high in junk foods were more likely to be hyperactive than those who did not. Hyperactive children may struggle to concentrate on simple tasks or find it difficult to focus on complex matters, such as those presented in a classroom.
The Women's and Children's Health Network notes that diet can influence children's study habits. Foods high in sugar can deplete energy levels and compromise a student's ability to concentrate for extended periods. Concentration is not the only problem linked to a poor diet. Children who regularly eat junk food have a higher risk for 48

obesity and other conditions. According to the Prevention Institute, junk food shoulders some of the blame for rising rates of diabetes, high blood pressure and stroke, and children who regularly consume junk food have higher rates of chronic illness. Children who are routinely sick and have to stay home from school may miss important lessons and fall behind in their studies. Children's obesity that is linked to poor food choices may have higher levels of depression and poor self-esteem. These psychological conditions can have their own profound effects on learning ability and concentration. Disinterest in school or in being around peers may set in. Nutritionists at the Mayo Clinic say that eating high amounts of junk food may result in depression. The effects of junk food and other dietary choices can easily be changed by altering a child's eating habits. Children who eat foods made from complex nutrients often experience
a renewed ability to concentrate and focus. Diets high in complex carbohydrates, fiber, lean protein, fruits, and vegetables will release a steady supply of energy through bodily metabolism, and this will help prevent the blood sugar peaks and crashes associated with foods high in refined sugar and simple carbohydrates. The addition of omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in walnuts, oily, cold-water fish, olive oil and flaxseed, can keep children feeling full and improve their mental acuity. All brands of baby formula currently sold in the United States are now fortified with omega-3 fatty acids in the form of
DHA and ARA. Some studies in infants suggest that including these fatty acids in infant formulas may have positive effects on visual function and neural development over the short term. It can be easy to blame declining school progress on insufficient study habits or poor connection with a teacher. However, a child's diet can help or hinder his or her academic performance as well. azhealthandliving.com |July 2014

Taylor Swift
Generously Gives Back Taylor Swift is a gifted artist with a generous heart. Her unique approach to music, meaningful lyrics, and angelic voice mends an aching heart filling it with joy. Aside from showcasing her talent at popular platforms, Swift is also highly involved in giving back to the community. According to MTV.com, Swift has committed to donating $4 million for the sake of music education to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville. “It will allow us to do what we do better, serve more people, develop new programs, and I’m happy to say that as we talked through this opportunity with Taylor, she very much wants to be involved in an advisory capacity in what we do,” Kyle Young, museum director tells The Associated Press. “Is there a better person out there who’s in touch with a young audience? I think not.” Going by MTV.com’s report, this exhibit and classroom space will promote youth education programs and art school where children will be given the opportunity to work on concert posters and other art projects. Swift’s contribution is driving colorful change in children and teens’ lives through art education programs encouraging healthy expression. 52

That’s not all. Swift recently donated a generous amount to a children’s hospital in Philadelphia. According to Justjaredjr.com, Swift’s gift will be used to create specialized programming for teens with cancer treated at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Justjaredjr.com also reports that Swift’s donation of 50k to CHOP will encourage experimentation in musical therapy, allowing patients to create and produce their own music while they continue to fight their battle with cancer.
Lamia Barakat, Ph.D., psychologist and director of the Psychosocial Services Program at CHOP’s Cancer Center, tells Justjaredjr.com, “Taylor Swift‘s music is an inspiration to so many of our teen patients. We can think of no better way to use her gift than to grow our Adolescent and Young Adult Initiative designed to support the emotional wellbeing of our teens with cancer.” Fans will agree with the fact that Swift’s music is soothing to the ears, but now it can be used for therapeutic purposes, especially young patients at CHOP. In retrospect, Swift launched her music career almost seven years ago. Her genuine lyrics and sensational concerts continue to boost her diverse fan following to date. The record-breaking number of awards she has earned, and millions of albums she has sold over the years, is mind blowing. Therefore, it is safe to say that Swift is indeed dominating the music industry. Recently, paparazzi captured Swift entering and exiting a music studio in Los Angeles, California. The Huffington Post confirmed the speculation, and mentioned that Swift is busy compiling her fifth album with 14 tracks underway perhaps releasing it this summer. Will Swift break out of her country genre and reveal a new side to her love for music? Let’s wait and take a listen. azhealthandliving.com | July 2014

Revitalizing Wardrobe Tips
C
elebrities and public figures make many things look easy, especially when it comes to fashion. Deep pockets and stylists on the payroll make it easy for celebs to project a polished appearance. However, money alone does not buy style, and chances are the average woman has the wardrobe staples necessary to look her best. Such essentials need not cost a fortune to produce a seemingly endless array of outfits.
Take inventory of the basics Women should go through their closets and find the wardrobe pieces that can be put to use in multiple combinations. Timeless styles can be used repeatedly, and some items work well as a base for a multitude of outfits. For example, a simple sleeveless dress in a neutral color can be worn alone, paired with a cardigan for a professional or casual look, or even made to look corporate with a blazer for a business meeting. A sheath in black, tan, or navy can be worn repeatedly and matched to a bevy of other pieces. In addition to a simple dress, a pair of black pants, a knee-length skirt, a few tanks or camisoles, a pair of dark-colored jeans, and solid-colored cardigans can be mixed and matched in different ways. Women can make a running list of the staples they already own and then fill in the missing pieces on their next shopping trip.
Add some pieces that pop
Looking good does not have to require spending a fortune or overhauling a wardrobe. Mix and match existing clothing with some new, well-fitting pieces to revitalize your look.
54 July 2014 | azhealthandliving.com
Spice up the basics with some new items that feature hot colors of the season. Pastels, orange and neon colors are big for the spring and summer. Orange can also carry into autumn. A bold blazer will add appeal to an office combination. A printed scarf paired with a neutral blouse and pants adds some color and whimsy without being too bold. Printed pants can be a fun choice for a night on the town. Those who prefer to play it safe may lean toward classic lines and colors, but do not forget to add some punch with strapped shoes or flashy accessories.
Know the cuts and colors that work Looking polished means finding the hues and styles that fit with a particular body type and skin color, more so than simply following the latest trends. A woman who understands her body type can rely on pieces that are designed to flatter. Not all colors work on every person.
While greens and yellows may look good on one person, a woman with an olive skin tone may look washed out wearing these shades too close to her face. Similarly, fair or darkskinned women may fade into their clothing if the pieces are too similar to their skin tone. Women can peruse magazines to find models of similar proportions and coloring, then experiment with the styles and hues they see. Once a match is found, these can be the go-to looks to always look polished.
Make sure it fits Clothing that does not fit properly will not look good no matter how fashionable or expensive it might be. Rather than fixating on the size printed on the tag, women should shop for clothing based on fit. This could mean bringing a few different sizes into the dressing room and figuring out which one fits best. Not all designers run true to size, and some fabrics will have more give than others will. A good rule of thumb is to fit the largest part of your body. The other measurements can be tailored accordingly. It is a safer bet to purchase a size bigger if one is between sizes and have the item altered rather than trying to squeeze into something that is too small.
Invest in good undergarments Sometimes it is not the clothes that can make the woman, but the structure pieces she wears underneath them. Fitting experts attest that nearly 80 percent of women are wearing the wrong size bra. Most women are slipping into bras that are too small. Although bras range in size from 28AAA to 56FF, the majority of department stores stock a limited number of the most popular sizes. Therefore, women may squeeze into bras that are not sized correctly. A better idea is to go to a specialty lingerie shop to be properly sized. Not only will a well-fitting bra support the breasts better, but such a bra also transforms the way shirts and dresses look and fit. Before investing in an entirely new wardrobe, women should invest in new bras. azhealthandliving.com | July 2014

PLAN & SAVE
career, business & Finance By Cary Siegel, author of Why Didn’t They Teach Me This in School? 99 Personal Money Management Principles to Live By
Are You Teaching Your Kids Responsible Personal Money Management?
T
he most important lessons you can teach your children pertain to personal money management, which is one of the most important skills they need to learn.
your spending and focus on what is most important to you. It means, “living smartly.”
With all the issues facing teenagers today, why is this one of the most important?
actually quite simple. It must be done. You cannot manage something you are not tracking. The concept is clear – more money must come in every month than goes out! A simple budgeting process to use allows three most important parts to be completed: developing, tracking and analyzing. The analysis part is so important. Where did you spend too much? Where did you not spend as much? What else do you need to include next month? What is in your emergency fund? What are your financial goals for the next 12 months? Remember, you will always have trade-offs!
Three reasons: 1. Schools teach them absolutely nothing about personal money management. 2. The example set by our society is to spend more than they make (in other words, debt is good). 3. It is one of the most important skills they need to take into adulthood. Three “must teach” principles:
Always live below your means. If you want to manage
your money successfully, this is one of the most important principles to follow. This is where most Americans have gone, and will continue to go, wrong. People want to have everything…now. They just cannot wait until they can afford it. However, you must wait until you can afford something before you buy it. If you make a habit of purchasing things you cannot afford, you will quickly begin a downward spiral that will continue until you go bankrupt. Plus, you will enjoy your purchase even more. If you always live below your means, you will always have extra money to save and invest. Over the years, your money will grow and you will find yourself with significant financial security. Keep in mind that living below your means does not mean living badly. It means you prioritize 56

Develop a written budget and evaluate it every single month. People think this is painful but it is
Save and invest 50 percent of every salary increase.
This is an easy principle that requires a little discipline. Think about it; you were living on your old salary before you got a raise. You can have the best of both worlds. You are still going to live better, but why not invest some for your future. Most people don't do this because they get behind in the first place. They start by spending more money than they make in the first place. You just cannot do that. If you employ this principle, you will be shocked at how well you do financially over time. Ninety-five percent of adults do not follow these principles because they have been told that debt is OK and they are trying to keep up with the Joneses (who, by the way, are bankrupt)! If you follow these three basic principles, you will become extremely adept at personal money management. Take the time to talk with your children about all the issues that confront them. Especially, take the time to discuss the issue of personal money management.
Lead paint poisoning affects over one million children today. Learning disabilities, hearing loss, speech delays, violent behavior and, in rare cases, seizures and even death: these are just some of the effects lead paint poisoning has on young children. If your home was built before 1978, lead paint on your walls, doors, windows and sills may be dangerous. And it’s not just large paint chips that can cause damage. In fact, three granules of lead dust are enough to poison your child. Let’s make all kids lead-free kids. Tips for Aging Workers
oomers may want to recall one of the poets they grew up reading, Dylan Thomas and his most famous poem, named for its first line, “Do not go gentle into that good night,” a desperate appeal to resist the trappings of old age. As they retire, seniors need to stay true to their reputation for grand statements, and to mobilize their skill set in the business world. In fact, many older Americans may have little choice but to adapt their mindset and survive longer in their careers if they want to maintain something resembling their current lifestyle during retirement. Here is a list of trends that may incentivize aging workers to clock in for a few more years. • The number of Americans 55 and older will almost double between now and 2030 – from 60 million to 107.6 million, according to the United States Census Bureau. That will likely strain public safety nets such as Social Security and Medicare. • American life expectancy is at an all-time high, and death rates are at an all-time low, which means some people will outlive their retirement savings. • The global economic crisis has wiped out or severely affected millions of middle and senior-aged people’s life savings. However, with an increasingly competitive pool of professionals whose skill sets need to be regularly updated, how can seniors stay in the game? Older workers can maintain their value – by staying relevant.
What it means to learn, unlearn and relearn. The ever-shifting sands of technology pose a special challenge to older workers. Younger professionals not only grew up working and entertaining themselves with screens, they learned to adapt to technological leaps. A program you learn 60

Being R-E-L-E-V-A-N-T. Take this mnemonic device to heart: risk, experiment, listen and learn, engage, value, attitude of gratitude, no to negativity and time. This is an ongoing, evolving note to keep in your mind no matter your professional situation.
Answer the question, “What resonates with you?” This is a deceptively deep question when you apply it to your life’s trajectory. If life hasn’t turned out to be what you expected it would 30 years ago, then it’s time to recalibrate how you see yourself, especially if that’s as a perpetual pre-retiree. If you are not sure of how you see yourself in today’s setting, start with what the spiritual writer Joseph Campbell called the “moving power of your life,” which can be sensed by the things that resonate within you. The things that resonate within you, such as an unusual book, may just be the compass you need to find your way.
Moving is the best medicine. Keeping active and losing weight are just two of the ways that you can fight osteoarthritis pain. In fact, for every pound you lose, that’s four pounds less pressure on each knee. For information on managing pain, go to fightarthritispain.org.

Grandparents Raising Grandkids
T
he stalled economy has pushed many families into the position of doing whatever is needed to make ends meet. In many cases, this means both parents working whatever jobs they can find and finding the best child care option while they are at work. Many people are turning to their parents to help care for their children.
More than 60 percent of families with children under age 18 had both parents employed outside the home in 2005 to 2006, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That compares to less than a third of mothers in 1975. The numbers today are around 42 percent, a decrease that likely has a lot to do with unemployment figures remaining high. With so many men and women heading to work each day, and money a factor for doing so, the topic of child care becomes one of necessity as well as affordability. Grandparents are regularly stepping up to help family members who are under a financial crunch. Grandparents considering caring for their grandkids should keep in mind some things even if the child care scenario on the surface seems like it is the best option.
It is a big commitment. Once the decision has been made, 62
July 2014 | azhealthandliving.com
it is expected that you will be providing care for a certain period – perhaps even without a future end date. Remember, other arrangements will have to be made if you back out because it is simply not working.
Know your limits. Child care is not something to take lightly. While you may have had enough energy to provide care years ago, maybe now you are simply not up to the task or have not identified factors that could hinder your ability to care for a grandchild – no matter how much you love him or her.
Be prepared for changes to your life. You will no longer be able to operate on your own schedule. Now your days will largely revolve around caring for your grandkids. If many of your friends are living active lives without grandchildren in tow, this could put a hamper on your relationships and ability to socialize.
It could be just what you need. On the flip side, if you have been seeking something to do with your time, being in the presence of your grandchildren could be just what you need to find a purpose to your days.
The relationship may cause animosity. If you are offering care to one set of grandchildren and are not doing
so to another, it could strain the relationships among your children. Think about the larger factor before agreeing to be the caregiver.
Talk to your spouse. If you are married or are in a
relationship, this is a decision that will have to be discussed with your partner, whose life will be impacted as well.
both of you are not seeing eye-to-eye on the situation, it may cause a rift that can damage your relationship.
Avoid guilt. If you choose to say no to the situation, it may
generate hurt feelings at the onset, but if you explain your reasons clearly, chances are the loved one will understand how you are feeling.
Although grandparents stepping in to become child care providers for their grandchildren while parents are at work has become a popular situation in recent years, it is important to weigh the pros and cons of the situation before delving headfirst into the arrangement. azhealthandliving.com | July 2014
