Freeze Fat Away this Father's Day!
For many aging men and women, localized fat layers can be very difficult to “work” off. Even with a regular exercise regimen and strict dietary factors, areas such as love handle, abdominal fat, and back fat can be stubborn to contour. Surgical liposuction may not be an option for many people due to cost, down time or anesthesia. Now there is another option, is a breakthrough, non-invasive procedure that uses cooling technology that noticeably eliminates fat without surgery. That’s right, similar to liposuction; the fat cells are eliminated resulting in fewer fat cells all together. Using science developed by Harvard scientist and technology by Zeltiq, induces selective fat layer reduction without any damage to overlying skin. Once the fat cells are affected by the cooling, they are eliminated from the body over the course of the next 90 days. There is no subsequent change in blood lipid levels following the procedure is completely non-invasive; there is no cutting, no needles, and no anesthesia necessary. The procedure begins with the device being attached to the area of concern with a suction sensation, and then a cold sensation is felt for the first few minutes. The area will feel either numb or cold for the remainder of the hour. During the procedure patients typically read, watch a movie, use electronic devices, listen to music, or relax. More than one area may be treated in the same appointment time. Upon consultation, your provider will determine if you are a good candidate and number of sessions that will be required for desired results and contour. is FDA cleared for the flank area and proven to be safe and effective with minimal side effects reported to resolve completely. There may possibly be some temporary pain or discomfort and your provider will discuss more on what to expect during and following the procedure. Areas that may be treated include love handles, back fat, lower abdomen, and inner thigh. Each patient is individually assessed to determine number of treatments and expectations. Most patients require one to two treatments and see noticeable reduction of fat in the treated area after one visit. Some individuals may appreciate more fat reduction with additional treatments. The cost of the procedure ranges from $1500 to $3000 depending on number of treatments and number of areas being treated. Studies show elimination of visible fat maintained past two years. Call now for an appointment to reduce those love handles for those problem areas before summer!

“Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.” 1 Corinthians 16:13 Welcome to our Men Today Issue. In honor of Father’s Day, I decree these bible verses be a source of inspiration for you.
Psalms 127:3-5 Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, The fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, So are the children of one’s youth. Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them; They shall not be ashamed, But shall speak with their enemies in the gate.
Deuteronomy 6:6-9 And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Hebrews 12:7 If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten?
Psalm 103:13 As a father pities his children, So the Lord pities those who fear Him.
Proverbs 3:11-12 My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor detest His correction; For whom the Lord loves He corrects, Just as a father the son in whom he delights.
Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
Hebrews 12:7
Genesis 18:19
If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten?
For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.
1 Peter 3:14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. “And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.”
Joshua 24:15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
Colossians 3:21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. Until next time, Wishing you a Happy Father's Day!
God Bless You for Your Support! Here to serve,

Arizona Native Scott Hanson Releases Who is Gym? Do you know who your high school football stadium is named after? Or the gym? Or the school itself? If not, don’t worry because Arizona native and 30 year high school football and baseball official Scott Hanson does – and he wants to share them with the world with his new book focused on all of the stories behind Arizona’s high school sports venues, “Who is Gym?” Who is Gym “Who is Gym?” is the result of three years of research and interviews with Arizona’s high school athletic directors, administrators, alumni, librarians, local historians, longtime school employees, relatives of those honored, the honorees themselves and others who may have known the people whose names adorn the buildings and fields across Arizona. “The idea for the book started three years ago on a Friday night at Cactus High School as my football crew was preparing to officiate the school’s varsity football game. The field was named M.L. Huber Stadium. Not familiar with Huber, I asked a couple people at the school who he was. To my surprise, they didn’t know who Huber was either,” Hanson says. “Then a week later, our football crew was at Independence High School and I asked about the story behind their Tolmachoff Stadium. I got the same answer. It was then that I was motivated to action.”
His first action – a conversation with Arizona state historian Marshall Trimble on the topic. “We got to talking, and Marshall was quick to point out there was no one place where all of this history lived. No collection. No official records,” Hanson says. “He told me right then and there I should take it upon myself to create a record and collection for our state. Those were powerful words.” Once the book was in process, Hanson turned back to Trimble, this time for more than just advice – to ask Trimble to write the official foreword, which Trimble happily provided.
A passage from his foreword: Among my fondest memories growing up in northern Arizona during the 1950s is playing high school sports in a small town along Route 66. Ash Fork was one of the smallest schools in the conference that included Williams, Flagstaff, Winslow, Holbrook, Snowflake, St. Johns, Round Valley and a host of others. We were the Spartans. I like to think we were well-named because like the 300 Spartans at Thermopylae, we were always outnumbered. Unlike the original Spartans, we lived on to fight and lose again and again. We got beat so often our cheerleaders were trained as grief counselors. If lessons are to be learned in defeat, we got a dang good education…. Scott has gathered a plethora of stories and historical information about Arizona’s high school gyms and ball fields. This is a book I’m sure you’ll all enjoy. 14

Endangered Red Ruffed Lemurs By Dr. Grey Stafford
A pair of critically endangered Red Ruffed Lemurs share a frozen fruit enrichment treat prepared by Wildlife World zookeepers. Like all species of lemur, these animals are only native to the Island of Madagascar. As such, poaching, extensive logging, habitat loss, and the illegal pet trade have had devastating effects on all lemur populations. Red Ruffed lemurs are one of the largest varieties of lemur and spend much of their time in the trees eating mostly fruits and leaves. They are a matriarchal species, with other family members providing protection and food to help nurture growing offspring. Fortunately, Wildlife World has a long history of successfully raising a variety of lemurs. Phoenix-based Esperança Expands Services to Peru Bringing Hope, Providing Help & Transforming Lives Can you imagine living in a rural part of Peru without running water, electricity or access to health care, food and clean water? It’s hard to imagine a world like this exists when we’re surrounded by the comforts of home each day. But, for hundreds of people who live beyond the city of Cuzco, located near the famous attraction, Machu Picchu, it’s a very difficult world. The Peruvian highlands are home to hundreds of small rural villages with families who live in extreme poverty. To get to some of these villages it can take 8-12 hours by car on a windy, treacherous road. Local farmers, mothers, teachers, nurses, and government authorities have expressed concerns for malnourished children, unclean drinking water and the poor housing conditions. Despite the area being one of the top producers of potatoes, families have asked to learn how to plant more fruits and vegetables so that their diet would be better balanced. With the high altitude and mountainous, bare terrain, conditions can be hard to sustain diverse crops. But, thanks to a new partnership with Esperança and an indigenous organization, CADEP in Peru, help is on its way. Since 1970, Valley-based Esperança has been providing programs to improve the health and well-being of the world’s poor. Headquartered in Phoenix, this international nonprofit provides volunteer surgical missions, health education, training of community health workers, home building, clean water projects, micro enterprise, agricultural development, dental health education, and prevention programs, and sends donated medical equipment and supplies to project sites around the world. Esperança’s goal is to build clean, sustainable and healthy communities worldwide. Last month, Esperança staff, a surgical team of volunteer doctors and donors made a trip to Peru to take part in a kick off meeting for the surgical program and visit a few agricultural projects. They also met with community leaders, built an adobe home in Santo Tomas, and visited Esperança’s “House of Waiting.” One of the donors who traveled with the group is Gregory Simpson of MidFirst Bank in Phoenix. This was his first trip with Esperança. We spoke with him before the trip, and he was looking forward to seeing the work firsthand. He’s been a supporter of Esperanca for about three years. 16 June 2015 | azhealthandliving.com
When he first learned of Esperança he was immediately drawn toward the mission and, after attending several Hope Breakfasts and learning even more about the work internationally and in Phoenix, he wanted to go on a volunteer trip. “The first 10 years of my life were spent in a low income neighborhood,” Simpson says. “We didn’t have running water in our home, and no one came to our rescue. I can relate to what these people are experiencing. I am looking forward to building homes with them and giving them new opportunities for a better life.” In 1998, Esperança built a maternal “waiting” facility, called “La Casa de Espera,” The House of Waiting, in Haquira, Peru. The facility has been providing women in the latter stages of pregnancy with a safe place to come for the last 17 years, but the dilapidated home is in desperate need of remodeling. Local health outposts provide basic medical care, but they cannot handle late-stage pregnancy and childbirth. Women in their final stages of pregnancy walk to La Casa de Espera because there is supervised care by nurses 24 hours a day. When it’s time to give birth, the nurse summons an ambulance, and the mother-to-be is transported to a nearby hospital to give birth. Photos courtesy of Esperança
Esperança is hoping to raise $37,000 to remodel the 1,050 square foot home that has three bedrooms with four beds in each room plus one bedroom for the nurse on duty. The home provides medical care for up to 12 women at one time. Last year, La Casa de Espera served approximately 100 women. “We are one of the only homes like this in the area, and we know the women are counting on us to continue to
provide care,” Jared Leslie, Director of Development for Esperança says. In addition to the renovation of La Casa de Espera, Esperança plans to bring hope, provide health and transform lives in Peru by: building ecological homes that are safe, environmentally-friendly and decrease risk for disease; training local farmers on using indigenous potato varieties for improved agricultural production; and educating families on the prevention of diseases like diarrhea, respiratory infection and other illnesses that affect local villages.

Sciatica a Concern for Many Men According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, eight out of 10 people have some type of backache. Back pain does not discriminate, and men, women, and even children can find themselves dealing with the unfortunate and uncomfortable side effects of a hurt back. Sciatica is one type of back pain that many men, particularly those who drive a vehicle or carry heavy loads for a living, deal with on a regular basis. Though a symptom and not a disorder, sciatica causes pain that can be quite uncomfortable. But as painful and as prevalent as sciatica can be, and some estimates suggest it affects as much as 10 percent of the population, many men don't know much about sciatica, which makes it harder to address the situation should it suddenly appear.
What is sciatica? Sciatica is pain caused by pressure on or damage to the sciatic nerve, a nerve that starts in the lower back and runs down the back of each leg. The pain that results from sciatica can occur anywhere from the lower back down to the sole of the foot. Sciatica can also affect the muscle power in the legs.
What causes sciatica? It's not always easy to pinpoint the specific cause of sciatica, but there are many conditions that can put pressure on the sciatic nerve and result in sciatica. Some of those causes include:
Spinal tumors: Tumors that develop within the spinal cord, membranes that cover the spinal cord or in the space between the spinal cord and the vertebrae can grow and compress the nerves, including the sciatic nerve, or even the spinal cord itself. Trauma: Any trauma to the spine, which can occur after a car accident or a fall, can injure the sciatic nerve and result in sciatica. Are there risk factors for sciatica?
Herniated disk: A herniated disk in the lower back can compress a nerve root in the lower back and cause sciatica. Disks are pads of cartilage that separate the vertebrae in the spine and gel can seep out and press on a nerve root, causing pain in either the back or leg, or even both. Spondylolisthesis: This occurs when one of the spine's vertebra slips forward over another vertebra. This typically happens as a result of degenerative disk disease, and the displaced bone can pinch the sciatic nerve, causing sciatica. 26 June 2015 | azhealthandliving.com
Certain things do increase the risk for sciatica. As mentioned above, sciatica can affect anyone. Men who perform physical labor as part of their occupations, however, might be most at risk. That's because a job that requires workers to twist their backs or carry heavy loads, jobs that are most often filled by men, is one of the risk factors for developing sciatica. Another risk factor is age. Spinal stenosis, which puts pressure on the sciatic nerve, occurs as people age and increases the risk for sciatica.
Men who live a sedentary lifestyle are also at increased risk for sciatica. That's because sitting for long periods can increase pressure on the sciatic nerve. Diabetes increases the risk of nerve damage, and as a result, diabetics might be at greater risk of developing sciatica than those without diabetes.
Are there complications from sciatica? Many people who experience sciatica fully recover. However, some people experience permanent nerve damage as well as additional complications, including: 路
Loss of feeling in the affected leg
路
Loss of movement in the affected leg
路
Loss of bowel or bladder function
Coping with back pain is seldom easy. However, by learning about certain types of back pain, including sciatica, men can put themselves in a better position to identify the source of their pain and deal with it more effectively.

How Men Can Cope with Stress Stress is a significant part of many people's lives. Men and women experience stress for a variety of reasons, but the rigors of managing a career and a family are something many men and women point to as their biggest causes of stress. Though both men and women suffer from stress, how they respond to stress is vastly different. According to a report from the American Psychological Association titled "Stress in America," only 52 percent of men say it is very important to manage stress. That pales in comparison to the 68 percent of women who recognize the importance of managing stress. In addition, the APA notes that roughly 25 percent of women recognize they are not doing enough to manage stress, while just 17 percent of men feel the same way. Such statistics are important, as men who underestimate stress could be unaware that stress increases their risk for depression, anxiety and cardiovascular disease. Recognizing a problem with stress is a great first step toward reducing it and improving your long-term health. There are many ways men can reduce stress, but the APA again notes that men are far less likely than women to employ strategies to reduce stress. Fifty-one percent of women, for example, admit to reading as a means of relieving stress, while only 31 percent of men say they read to relieve stress. Men who want to buck these trends can take several steps to cope with and ultimately reduce their stress.
Find the cause of your stress. Recognizing the things that trigger your stress can help you avoid them or at least be more prepared for them going forward. Workplace stress is considerable for many people, and a 2012 study published in the medical journal Cardiology & Vascular Medicine found that people with job strain at work, which the authors defined as high demand on the individual and little to no freedom to make their own decisions as to how and when to do the work, had a 23 percent greater risk of heart attack. If work is the primary cause of your stress and you don't address it, the impact on your health could be dire. 28 June 2015| azhealthandliving.com
When you find yourself stressing out, take a moment to write down the things that might have triggered the stressful episode. It might be a particular task at work or driving in heavy traffic. Once you have identified the things that trigger your stress, you can work to avoid them as best as possible or you will be able to see them coming and might be able to respond more calmly.
Find a healthy response to stress. How you respond to stress is essential to reducing it. As previously noted, many men do not even recognize the importance of managing stress, and those men might be more inclined to respond to stress in negative, unhealthy ways, such as by smoking or drinking. Such responses will only exacerbate the problem.
Finding a healthy response to stress is essential. Some research has suggested that exercise enhances the body's ability to deal with stress and provides the body with somewhat of a trial run at responding to stress. When the body is exercising, several of its physiological systems must communicate with one another, and those same systems must work together once again when the body is responding to stress. Therefore, exercise may not only relieve stress but also help your body become more capable of coping with stress. Discussing stress with others or a stress-reducing activity like meditation are also healthy responses to stress.
Take a proactive approach to stress. Many people can trace their stress to taking on more they can handle. This can occur at the office, in your personal life or, as is the case for many people, a combination of both. Stretching yourself too thinly can make you vulnerable to stress. Even if one particular thing like work or family is not stressing you out, it's important to recognize that stress can also be caused by a combination of things. Before stress even has a chance to settle in, make an effort to give yourself more down time and do not stretch yourself too thin.

MIND, BODY & spirIT By Dr. Sherrie Campbell, author of Loving Yourself: The Mastery of Being Your Own Person
Steps to Get Your Mojo Back This Summer New beginnings are the most exciting and energizing times in life. Summer is always a new beginning because it’s a new season. Now is a great time to be fired up, motivated, and start making changes to get to your next level of YOU. Mojo is that magical charisma you carry that makes you feel good and infectious to others. Most of you are great starters but not all are great finishers. If you have lost your mojo and want to be a better you for summer, commit to a new beginning right now. Here are eight ways to get your mojo back and keep it flourishing.
Change your environment: Change the environments in your life that are now gray and uninspiring. Do some of your work out of the office, redecorate your house and add more color, spend time on your patio, leave your cubicle and go out for lunch. If you are getting tired, get up and move to another room. Add music or white noise to create something soothing. Changing the appearance and location of your differing environments helps you to think in more different and innovative ways. The more innovative you are the more mojo you have.
Strive to be your best: Always envision yourself as being your ‘ideal self.’ Your ‘ideal self’ is that part of you which is in front of you encouraging you forward. This part of you is holding up the guideposts and possibilities for your growth, happiness and expansion. What you think determines your outcome. Strive toward meeting your ‘ideal self’ at the finish line. If you can dream it, then you can achieve it. Work backward from the ‘ideal self’ by setting small, incremental goals for each area of your life to keep your mind positive. Before you know it, you will be thriving as a much better you. You will feel your confidence growing as you begin to manifest all you have been working toward. 30
June 2015| azhealthandliving.com
Change Your Patterns: When you break your routines, you essentially create a new life. Habits are easy but there is no risk in habit because ultimately habits are lazy. You cannot grow stuck inside the traps familiarity and comfort. To get your mojo back, be brave! Change your diet, change your workout, change your wardrobe, buy different makeup and class-up your personal style. If you eat at the same restaurant for lunch all the time, walk one block farther to check out a new spot. See what happens by simply sitting on the other side of your desk, giving you a new perspective by looking out at different wall or window.
Shift Your Priorities: Your daily schedule is a reflection of your deepest priorities. If you have zero fun, free time or time for family and friends actually on your calendar, and instead your calendar is booked up with meetings and other task oriented responsibilities, then you are missing the juiciest parts of life. Robots do not have mojo.
Invest in personal growth: The best of the best have the best of the best of the best as mentors, friends, family and colleagues. Learn as much as you possibly can from other successful, happy people who want to share their wisdom with you. The ball is in your court: Make the effort to keep yourself in a place of personal expansion, whether that means going to seminars, meeting weekly with a coach or therapist, reading books each night and writing goals, but strive to be your very best at all time. This always gives you something to talk about and it makes you interesting to other people. Change your friends: The people with whom you surround yourself heavily influence you. If you’re lacking motivation and feeling down about everything, it might be time to upgrade your circle of influence. Negativity is contagious, as is positivity. Those closest to you should be those who bring out your best qualities, including your mojo for life’s adventures. If more time with family is important to you then start planning some vacations and staycations for all you to get away and enjoy being a family without other distractions. Take time out to have dinner with the girls or watch the game with the boys or go play a round of golf. Your net worth emotionally is the average of that of your five closest friends. When you hang out with successful people, happy, fulfilled people you elevate your own mojo, so choose wisely.
Change Your Thoughts: You are what you think. You cannot think negative and have powerful mojo. If you think you are fat then that will be your experience whether you are or aren’t. Thinking negatively doesn’t accomplish anything; it takes zero effort and is a lazy mojo-stealing habit. Discipline your mind toward the goals of what you want to look like, be like, and start putting the effort in right now to get there. In any situation suffering over your own suffering doesn’t work. Know the areas of your life you want to change and be deliberate in changing them.
Be Authentic: There is nothing sexier than to be beautiful inside and out. When you are committed to your loving and respecting yourself, you exude a quiet confidence. Your focus is on being genuine, kind, strong, courageous, intelligent, successful, elegant, steadfast and fulfilled. You possess enough composure that if you cannot say something kind you have the wisdom to remain quiet. You make sure the kindness of your character speaks more deliberately to who you are than what designer you are wearing. True mojo is not a loud energy; rather it is an understated energy. Loud is repulsive ego-stuff. Your mojo is that more subtle energy your personal essence leaves in the wake of your presence. This is something to admire. There is nothing more mojo promoting than authenticity and having a strong sense of who you are. Not all of these changes are easy. They all require a deliberate change of habit, which can feel like an insurmountable challenge. Getting your mojo back is critical for your quality of life so it is certainly cause for some radical changes and the outright shattering of your own tired habits. Face it – feeling passionate and motivated every day for your work, family and self is a win for yourself and those that depend on you. azhealthandliving.com | June 2015

You See a Shrink?
The Judgment that Comes From Admitting You Need Help It is often the assumption that if you go to therapy that you have serious problems, you cannot manage on your own and there is something fundamentally wrong with you. In reality, if someone is attending therapy, they tend to be on the healthier side of self-love and self-awareness. Because seeing a therapist is stigmatized many people who want to seek help, either often don’t, or they keep their therapy private so they do not invoke judgment.
Everyone Can Benefit from Therapy: We are not here to do life on our own and nor are we equipped to be 100 percent objective in our own lives. Therapy is the perfect way to get that objective view, get to know yourself more deeply, analyze your habits of behavior and to find solutions and resolutions to life’s everyday issues. Healthy People Seek Therapy: Healthy people are on the search from continual improvement, self-awareness, and better solutions to life’s problems. Healthy people are ‘OK’ being wrong in life and in taking direction. They have enough self-awareness to know when they need help and when they do not. In this way, therapy becomes a modicum for continual expansion and improvement in the quality of one’s emotional life.
Crazy-Makers DON’T Attend Therapy: The unhealthiest
people, the people who need treatment the most, are the ones who never consider therapy. In their mind’s they are never wrong, it is always someone else’s problem, and they should not have to change. Rather, the world is ‘who’ needs to change. The people who end up in therapy are those trying to deal with the relationships they have with these crazy-makers—the spouses, the children, the partners, the parents. These people cannot benefit from therapy because they have little to no insight into themselves.
Own Your Personal Journey: If you have chosen to attend therapy be proud of it. Most people who are seeing the benefits of therapy tend to brag about how much the therapy is changing their lives. We all want to be happy and when you communicate about your therapy as a major benefit to your life you will be surprised how many people either ask for your therapists information or confess back to you they have also sought therapy. 32 June 2015| azhealthandliving.com
Reaching Higher Levels: Therapy is that space developed and created to facilitate your growth into the higher levels of life and understanding what you wish to achieve in life. Most of our most successful people regularly attend some type of therapy, weather that be coaching, mentoring, therapy, motivational seminars, reading selfhelp books, etc. It is really all the same stuff being delivered through a different channel, a different medium. Why be ashamed of something that is improving the quality of your life. If someone is judging you for your choice to seek therapy of some sort, it says more about that person and their ignorance and insecurity than it says about your desire to improve your life, and become a happier more satisfied person. Take hold of what you are willing to do to make this life more understandable to you and live it with confidence.

Q. Why shouldn’t I buy my hearing Q. What is neuromodulation and why are chronic pain patients so aids from a big box store? excited about it? A. Hearing aids are intricate little computers that take skilled programming in order to A. Neuromodulation is a generic term that appropriately amplify an individual’s hearing loss. Hearing aids are not a quick-fit solution to hearing loss. Programming performed by a doctorate level audiologist is critical if you want to hear your best. In most cases, it takes many follow-ups along with reallife test trials to ensure the hearing aids perform their best. Hearing aids also require routine cleanings and check-ups to prolong the life of the devices
Big box stores have been selling hearing aids for years, however, most of these stores hire from within. These stores train employees with no education or experience in hearing loss to sell hearing aids. In Arizona, the only requirement needed to obtain a license to sell hearing aids as a ‘Hearing Instrument Specialist’ is a high school diploma. When you combine cheap hearing aids with an individual who has minimal knowledge or education in hearing loss programming the devices, you end up with less than ideal outcomes. Although cheaper prices are definitely appealing, cheap hearing aids are still expensive if they do not work. Having your hearing loss treated next to the toilet paper aisle in a warehouse is not ideal if your ultimate goal is better hearing and better quality of life.

includes many techniques to control the nervous system in the body for the purpose of controlling pain. Neuromodulation has been very promising for controlling pain from migraines, pinched nerves, spinal stenosis, and sciatica. It even can be effective when surgery fails. Until recently, the problem with most forms of neuromodulation has been that it typically is invasive. This means that it requires surgery or at least requires penetration of the body with needles. But all of this is changing rapidly; there are a growing number of techniques, which appear to be able to modulate pain in the body without resorting to surgery, needles, or other invasive procedures. For example, gently pressurizing the ear with puff of air may modulate that part of the nervous system associated with migraines. Using specially designed headphones, which vibrate the skull, can often dramatically reduce chronic back pain. A specific type of stimulation applied behind the ears, may reduce the pain associated with stroke, and gentle stimulation at the base of the neck has been shown to block pain signals associated with spinal stenosis and sciatica. Stimulation of the outer ear can often change the perception of pain in fibromyalgia patients and as crazy as it sounds watching yourself exercise in a mirror can help various forms of neuropathy. These techniques of neuromodulation are simple and often provide pain relief when drugs, injections, and surgery have failed. Combining these techniques has produced amazing results for many of our patients.

Q. How are brown age spots removed? A. There are many techniques and treatments available to remove freckles and age spots, but what many people don’t realize is that brown spots can be removed in a few, quick treatments. Photo facial treatments use IPL (intense pulsed light) to treat a wide variety of skin conditions, such as freckles, age spots, acne, broken capillaries, rosacea and some cases of melasma. A photo facial is similar to a laser treatment in that it uses light energy to target pigment and redness while leaving the remaining skin untouched. It causes no damage to the dermis or epidermis. Once the treatment is complete, the spots will turn very dark and will fall off the face in about a week. As the skin cells naturally regenerate and fall off, the destroyed spots fall off as well. The treatment takes about 15 minutes and feels similar to numerous rubber band snaps. The skin may be red and warm for a few hours. This treatment is suitable for lighter skin types and not recommended for darker skin. The technician should always do a test spot on a hidden area before proceeding with the treatment, to ensure correct treatment levels and that the patient is a good candidate. Treatments cost anywhere from $100-$300 depending on the physician or med spa.

Q. What is Kinesio tape and how can it help me?
A. Over the last several years, we’ve been introduced to the use of what appears to be abstract, colorful, tape art applied to various parts of professional athlete’s bodies. If you are seeing this on the Olympic volleyball players, the NFL draft candidates during the combine, and NBA players around the US this is Kinesio Taping®.
Kinesio Taping® aka “KTaping,” has been around since the 70s. Dr. Kase, an American educated Chiropractor, developed this technique. He found the more traditional methods, such as athletic taping and strapping, provided support but restricted or reduced range of motion. He also found these did not support fascia and, in some cases, inhibited the healing process. It is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting range of motion as well as promoting prolonged benefits of manual therapy. The application of KTape is based upon the patient’s needs after evaluation. Kinesio tape can be applied in hundreds of ways and has the ability to re-educate the neuromuscular system, reduce pain and inflammation, enhance performance, prevent injury, and promote good circulation and healing. Clinical application includes, but is not limited to, postural alterations based on musculoskeletal imbalance, sprain/strains of various joints and muscles, complimenting in joint mobility and stabilization therapy, and so much more. I have also seen this utilized to assist someone obtain range of motion and function following a severe acute trauma induced case of drop wrist. – Dr. Foust Kukurin Chiropractic, Acupuncture & Nutrition Network 623.547.4727
Q. What preventative steps can be taken to ensure a long life of good vision?
A. I hear this question often. Good vision is when a person’s visual function with or without glasses is completely satisfactory for their needs.
The most important preventative step is regular eye exams. Just like annual trips to the doctor or dentist, make regular eye exams part of your family’s health care routine. Many potentially blinding medical conditions of the eye can be detected and treated with early intervention. Glaucoma is a particular disease that if left undetected will lead to blindness. In the early stages of the disease, there are no symptoms that the patient experiences and it can only be diagnosed through a routine eye exam. Another very important preventative measure is to wear UV protective sunglasses. Especially here in Arizona where the sun is so intense, the simple act of wearing sunglasses can prevent or slow down cataracts and macular degeneration. The old adage, “You are what you eat,” rings true with your eyes as well as your waistline. Eating food rich in antioxidants, such as spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, peas and tangerines, is very important to eye health. Also, omega-3 fatty acids have been proven therapeutic in both macular degeneration and dry eye. Omega-3s can be included in you daily diet by either eating fish daily or taking fish oil supplements.

Q. How does obesity induce sleepdisordered breathing?
A. Obesity-induced sleep-disordered breathing
has fat collecting around the neck and abdominal area, putting pressure on the airway as well as the lungs, thus making it difficult for the body to breathe.
The most likely candidates are middle aged and elderly males, who gain weight primarily in the neck and abdomen. This type of weight gain is dictated by testosterone. Similar weight gain occurs in women who are entering menopause, have hormonal imbalances or who are pregnant. Weight gain has also been linked to insulin production, glucose intolerance, diabetes and metabolic disorders. While metabolic disorders, hormonal imbalances, and physiological changes such as menopause create difficult conditions for weight loss, research shows that weight loss significantly reduces sleep-disordered breathing problems. A 2002 study conducted by the University of Wisconsin and the Boston University School of Medicine identified obesity as one of a list of risk factors that, if reduced or eliminated, would decrease the severity of a sleep-disordered breathing problem. If you wake up tired in the morning, suffer from headaches, snore, experience gastro esophageal reflux, depression, any kind of cardiovascular or pulmonary disease, and you are overweight, I highly suggest a neck circumference measurement and a body mass index (BMI) calculation. A neck circumference measurement of 17 inches or greater in men and 16 inches or greater in women and a BMI calculation greater than 25 is a good indication of a possible sleepdisordered breathing problem.

A. A hernia occurs when an abdominal organ or other tissue has abnormally protruded through the abdominal wall cavity. They may cause little to no pain at first. A hernia can be in your groin, on your abdomen, or associated with a previous scar. A bulge or hernia that is associated with redness, nausea, or severe pain can mean a strangulated hernia. A strangulated hernia is always a dangerous condition in which the blood supply to the hernia and to its contents is cut off. It must be addressed immediately before sepsis sets in, which can lead to death.
A. Acupressure is the use of gentle risk. However, plastic surgery procedures are pressure of the hand and firm contact on special body points to release muscle tension, improve circulation and promote the body’s self-healing abilities. The special body points are called the acupuncture points. Thousands of years ago, the ancient Oriental practitioners observed that by applying pressure with fingers and hands to specific points on the body could help relieve pain. After many years of observation and trials, there have been more than five hundred acupuncture points identified with therapeutic effect.
It is important for patients to disclose all pertinent medical history to the surgeon so that a true assessment of any surgical risks can be made. Your plastic surgeon and/or staff should explain in detail the risks associated with the procedure and you will be asked to sign a consent form acknowledging that you fully understand those risks. Many manual techniques and maneuvers were found and developed based on the ideas of acupressure. Here are a few questions you should ask: Are you certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery? How many years of plastic surgery training do you have? At which hospital(s) do you have privileges to perform this procedure? How many procedures of this type have you performed? Am I a good candidate for this procedure? What are the risks and complications associated with my procedure? How are complications handled? It is natural to feel apprehension, anxiety, stress and of course, excitement, before any plastic surgery, so do not be shy about sharing these feelings with your surgeon. To achieve realistic goals and the best results from your plastic surgery an understanding of your motivation and expectations is necessary, so it is important to communicate openly with your surgeon.

A hernia will not go away on its own and will not get better. Delaying treatment can only increase your risk for strangulation and increase your risk for complications. A strangulated hernia will require a traditional open surgery, a 3-5 day hospital stay, as well as a prolonged recovery time. Laparoscopic surgery is best instituted early on, where healing, recovery, and postoperative pain are all significantly improved over traditional open surgery. A laparoscopic procedure allows for smaller incisions, quicker recovery, less pain and no hospital stay. Typically, the procedure can be done through three micro incisions in less than an hour. Now is the time to address your hernia, don’t wait for complications. Your health should come first.

However, many baby boomers have found themselves seeking employment and frankly, they cannot afford to look their age. This is one of the many reasons men state for getting Botox. Along with competition in the workplace, encouragement from a female and not wanting to look grumpy or tired are other top factors for men choosing the elective procedure. The areas that tend to be most popular with men are the vertical lines between the brows and horizontal forehead lines. Some men have their crow’s feet treated as well. Many businessmen are also treating their excessive underarm sweating with Botox, which can reduce their dry cleaning bill. Men generally require higher dosing due to larger muscle mass, with prices ranging from $400-$600. The procedure takes only a few minutes and most men handle the tiny needle very well. The effects of looking youthful rested and refreshed is what keeps both men and women continuing the treatment.

Q. What's with all the construction on the southwest portion of Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park south of the rhino exhibit along the new state route 303 expansion?
A. Travelers along the state route loop 303
may have noticed some rather tall structures and several buildings being erected on the freeway's eastern edge just south of Northern Avenue. It's all part of our future expansion due to open next winter with an American Adventure-land theme. This new 15-acre parcel will add several indoor animal exhibits, large animal pastures, ponds and ride attractions including: a family roller coaster, 100-foot tall zip line, a 100-foot tall swing ride themed around new monkey island exhibits, and a macaw themed flying scooters ride. In addition, there will be a Mexican restaurant and many North American species we've never previously displayed such as mountain lion, black bear, bison and others. There will also be a variety of primates from central and South America. The aerial rides will enable visitors to experience some of the animals eye-to-eye among the treetops! Progress on the new addition is moving along with an anticipated opening in November. Even with the new and visible rides, rest assured that animals have been and always will be the stars of the show at Wildlife World. We are so excited to feature many new species from North and South America. For those new to the Valley or just visiting Arizona, the zoo, aquarium and the recently added safari park increases Wildlife World's developed area to more than 80 acres and includes another dining option for guests. As a USDA licensed, private institution, accredited by the Zoological Association of America (ZAA) and the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks & Aquariums (AMMPA), Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park receives zero taxpayer funding.

What Dads Wish They Could Tell Their Daughters One of the most common mistakes parents tend to make is lecturing instead of conversing. Since parents often feel strongly about the issues, we sometimes try to hammer home our point without really listening and understanding what our daughter is thinking. Ask open-ended questions that begin with what, why and tell me. Another common problem is awkward conversations. Nobody wants awkward conversations, but what can you do? Discussing touchy topics can be less threatening if you talk about a celebrity or a person you both know rather than yourselves. Honesty and humor are essential. Teens can smell BS from a mile away so give it to them straight. She wants and needs the truth. Don't take yourselves too seriously. A light touch makes conversations more fun and encouraging. She must know, without a doubt that you are on her side. The third mistake dads make is assuming their daughters will not listen to them. Unless your relationship has gone seriously toxic, most children really do care what their parents think. However, sometimes it takes them a while to process challenging ideas. We don't want our daughters to go out and make big mistakes because we didn't have the courage to tell them the hard truths. Your own mistakes in life do not disqualify you from sharing your wisdom and insight. To get the conversation started, share one of these concepts with your daughter and ask what she thinks of it. Does she agree or disagree? Why? What examples has she seen in people around her?
Lips are your secret weapon. Learning to converse easily with guys is one of the most important skills you can learn. Guys like being with girls who make conversation easy and interesting. Conversation is a skill you can learn just like playing the piano. If you practice, you can get good at it. 44

Fateful Attraction. Attraction cannot be forced or faked but it can be influenced. Physical attraction will fade if you do not have an attraction based on character and personality. Dump the guy humanely. Men want to know the truth so if it's not going to work, tell him so he can deal with it, and move on. He would rather know where he really stands than get dragged along. Sandwich the bad news between a couple of compliments. Be gentle but direct. You can't put a condom on your heart. Contrary to popular opinion, your heart is at just as much risk as your reproductive system. Since you can't put a condom on your heart, safe sex is a myth. A girl's heart is at much greater risk than the guy's. Sex is like Duct Tape. Sex is meant to help one couple bond together permanently for life. Each time it is used outside of marriage, it loses some of its stickiness. Guys say "love" to get sex. Girls give sex to get love. Sorry girls, sex won't buy you genuine love. It is very easy for men to have sex without love or commitment but women violate their own inner voice of sanity and femininity when they have sex without commitment. His self-esteem may go up but yours will go down. Perhaps it's not fair but that's how it is.
Sex causes blindness. Sex helps married people overlook each other's faults. Unfortunately, it has the same effect on single people, often causing them overlook critical flaws and make a poor choice of who they marry. Does he truly love you or does he love having sex with you? That's the million dollar question and sex can give both of you fuzzy vision and confusion. "Keep your eyes wide-open before marriage and half shut afterward" - Ben Franklin. Intended for pleasure. Sex is part of the superglue of marriage. Surfaces must be clean and dry for good adhesion. Marriage is tough and you need as much going in your favor as possible. If you ruin the magic of sex by treating it like a meaningless toy, you are heading into marriage with one strike against you. Sex is a big deal in marriage and you need the magic. Never buy a swimsuit at a Hardware store. Your shopping instinct easily steers you away from the hardware store when you need a new suit but your man instinct is letting you down if it takes you to bars and clubs with the hope of finding good husband prospects. How to be a Good Youth Sports Parent Extracurricular and summer season sports leagues keep thousands of children occupied. Youth sports promote physical fitness and teamwork while helping children acquaint themselves with sportsmanship and camaraderie. The Journal of Sports Medicine says three out of four American families with school-aged children have at least one child playing an organized sport. While many kids play just for recreation, others play competitively. Sports are meant to be sources of enjoyment for children, but parental pressure and poor adult behavior on the sidelines can make kids reluctant to compete. Parents who behave poorly may inadvertently pass on bad habits to their children or cause kids to prematurely abandon their athletic pursuits. The following are a few tips for parents who want to encourage their kids' passions for sports in positive ways.
Show respect for coaches and officials. Parents should not act like they are the final authority on calls or how team members should play. Respect should always be shown to coaches and referees.
Let your child have fun regardless of his or her performance. Too often parents get swept up in how their children are performing when the goal for young athletes should be to enjoy themselves. Resist the urge to focus on performance and focus instead of whether or not your child is having fun.
Recognize college scholarships may not be in the cards. Although some children are destined for athletic greatness, many will not play sports after high school. Pressuring older children to improve their performance in the hopes of landing college scholarships can make the little time they do have to play their favorite sports less enjoyable.
Take cues from the child. Children are often great indicators of parental behavior at sporting events. Parents whose children seem unenthusiastic about mom and dad attending their sporting events may be trying to tell you they don't appreciate your behavior at the games. 46

Provide constructive criticism. Early coaching and practice with parents can give kids a leg up on the competition. But keep your advice constructive. Parents who become pushy or force constant practices can make sports unenjoyable.
Place emphasis on fun and learning skills. Find out what the kids hope to accomplish by playing sports and help them to achieve those goals. Focus on being supportive rather than emphasizing winning, as doing so can help children view sports participation in a more positive light. If children seem to have lost interest in sports, parents can ask why in an effort to make sports fun again or encourage other pursuits. Many sports now require yearround participation, which can cause burnout in some youngsters. Sometimes a brief break and some fine-tuning may be all that's needed to rekindle a child's passion for sports.
How Men Can Level the Playing Field
By Charles D. Martin, author of “Provocateur”
In the battle of the sexes, men aren’t doing so well. Just Google and you’ll find all kinds of news stories about men who willingly give up their cash, and their luxury cars. As men, we never like to admit that we may be outsmarted by a woman – but the truth is, it is happening all the time! And it’s getting worse, for men. Women are far outpacing men in numbers of college degrees. They now outnumber men, earning almost 60 percent of college degrees. And while that doesn’t necessarily make them ‘smarter’ than men, it sure does add to their advantage. In addition, women have other obvious advantages. In the presence of a sexy woman, men lose their ability to think or act rationally. That’s an enormous advantage for women! Men do not realize that it is women that are in charge of the mating process. How can men level the playing field? Here are some suggestions:
Recognize the predator – and the prey. If you are an older gentlemen, particularly one with some status or affluence and a young, attractive woman comes on to you … be on guard. She probably has nefarious, not amorous, motives. Keep your pants zipped and your wallet stowed until you are totally persuaded that her affection for you is genuine.
Remember, they don’t have to be young to be dangerous. There are recent news stories about a 54-year-
old woman stealing more than $85,000 from a 93-year-old man, promising him a “big payoff.” In another case, a 45year-old woman had a 60-year-old man paying for her elective surgeries, limousines, even a $1,000 dog. They may be moms or grandmoms, but they’re still women.
Even if you are happily married, you are still vulnerable. Beware the “perfect storm,” which occurs as a
man ages and tries to hang on to his virility, just as his high school sweetheart is also showing signs of wear. That makes him vulnerable to a younger female with ulterior motives. If a sexy woman comes on to you, get away fast. These “Provocateurs” can get the best of you in a nanosecond. azhealthandliving.com |June 2015

Drowning Not the Only Water Hazard Spending time on the water can be quite enjoyable. That is why thousands of people own boats, visit coastal areas throughout the year to fish, sail and swim. Marine transportation also provides a fast and efficient method of commuting. As fun as a day or night on the water can be, maritime accidents do occur, despite the best efforts and intentions of recreational or commercial boaters and water enthusiasts. Many accidents can be avoided when boaters remain aware of the potential hazards that exist on the water. Bodies of water can seem peaceful and welcome respites on a hot day. But water-related accidents, particularly unintentional drownings, account for roughly 3,500 fatalities in a given year in the United States. Furthermore, about one in five people who die from drowning are children ages 14 and younger. Those who do not experience fatal accidents may receive emergency care for nonfatal submersion injuries, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Here are some of the other dangers that can occur in and around the water.
Dehydration Being in and around the water doesn't necessarily mean the body is getting enough fluid to remain healthy. When the temperature is high, dehydration can set in within an hour, often through loss of moisture from sweat, urine and even breathing. A person who is cool from swimming may not realize his body needs water until dehydration already has set in. Drinking plenty of fresh water will help keep the body cool and comfortable.
Hypothermia Hypothermia occurs when the body loses more heat than it produces and the core temperature drops. Hypothermia may even occur in warm water, or if you are sitting around in damp clothing as the temperature outside falls. Try to remain as dry as possible, even preventing clothing from being dampened by sweat, to prevent hypothermia. Cover up and wear layers of clothes to ward off hypothermia. 48

Marine life Tropical marine life is not always friendly, and there may be some apex predators in the surrounding waters. It is advisable to research what fish and other marine creatures inhabit the waters where you plan to spend some time. Although many animals will keep their distance, there is the potential for run-ins with seemingly innocuous creatures that can cause injury. Always keep a respectable distance from underwater animals when snorkeling, swimming and exploring.
Water quality The water itself could be a source of danger. Harmful bacteria and other microorganisms can reside in poorly maintained water or water with limited movement. Heed all posted warnings about swimming conditions, and do not consume fish from waters where there is concern about chemical spills or other contamination. Staph infections and skin irritations can occur when swimming in water with unseen pathogens, even if the water looks clean.
Toys A surprisingly common cause of water-related accidents, especially in swimming pools, is using toys and flotation devices that are not suitable for the conditions. These items can flip over and trap people upside down underwater. Furthermore, pool floats and rafts should not be used in place of personal flotation devices, or PFDs, which are designed and certified for use in life-saving situations.
Chemicals The chemicals needed to maintain safety and water quality in a backyard pool could be dangerous. Many chemicals can be toxic in high concentrations and volatile when stored in close proximity to others. Homeowners may be playing novice chemist when mixing chemicals for the pool, inadvertently putting themselves and swimmers at risk. Always follow the precautions on pool chemical packaging to ensure the water is safe.
Alcohol Alcoholic beverages impair decision-making abilities and reaction time. It's never good to mix alcohol with swimming and boating. A person operating a boat or watercraft should not be allowed to do so when under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Many good times are to be had when enjoying the recreational benefits of the water. Keeping safety in mind will help prevent accidents and injuries.

Ingredients That Help Fight Inflammation Those outside of the medical profession may consider inflammation a negative thing. However, inflammation is an attempt by the human body to heal itself. Inflammation that does not overstay its welcome can help protect the body from bacterial and viral infections. Inflammation can be poor for health when it is a constant occurrence. Autoimmune diseases often trigger inflammatory responses even when there is no threat of infection, and that can cause the immune system to damage its own tissues. The right diet can help reduce instances of inflammation, and the following are some ingredients to consider eating more of to fight symptoms of inflammation.
Ginger. Researchers at the University of Michigan Medical School found that ginger supplements reduced markers of colon inflammation in a select group of patients. In the study, conducted over a period of 28 days, 30 patients were randomly assigned either 2 grams of ginger root supplements per day or a placebo. After 28 days, patients who had taken the ginger supplements had significant reductions in inflammation. That's a considerable finding, as colon inflammation has been linked to a higher risk of colon cancer.
Turmeric. Used primarily for flavoring, turmeric is a spice closely related to ginger and contains polyphenolic compounds known to help in the fight against inflammation. Turmeric can be added to stews and sauces, and some studies have indicated that it can alleviate the pain caused by osteoarthritis, a potentially painful condition that occurs when the joints' natural shock absorbers break down.
Extra-virgin olive oil. Extra-virgin olive oil is a staple of the Mediterranean diet, an approach to eating that emphasizes fish, fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains. The Mediterranean diet can reduce inflammation, and it has been linked to a lower risk of heart attack and heart disease. It may even help prevent stroke and Alzheimer's disease. 50 June 2015 | azhealthandliving.com
Vegetables. Men and women who eat many different vegetables may be less likely to develop inflammation. According to a study by the American Gut Project, people who eat more than 25 species of plants per week have a greater assortment of bacteria in their stomachs than those who eat fewer than 10 per week. That's because the greater variety of produce and legumes helps to increase the amount of healthy bacteria lining human stomachs, and that healthy bacteria helps to reduce instances of inflammation.
Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids, commonly found in certain types of fish, help suppress cytokines and other inflammatory chemicals. Salmon, herring, sardines, and anchovies are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, and eating fish twice a week cannot only reduce inflammation but also decrease levels of LDL cholesterol, often referred to as "bad" cholesterol. A certain amount of inflammation is a good thing. But men and women who find themselves routinely battling inflammation may want to make certain dietary changes to counter their inflammation problems.
Foods to Supplement Men's Workouts By MS
Diet and exercise go hand-in-hand for adults looking to reduce their risk for heart disease and cancer. A great workout routine is made even better by a healthy diet, and a healthy diet is even more effective when paired with an active lifestyle. While that's certainly not revelatory, men and women might be surprised to learn they have different nutritional needs, so a diet that might satisfy women's needs will not necessarily do the same for men. When tailoring their diets, men should be sure to include nutrients that prevent prostate cancer and help them maintain muscle mass. The right nutrients also can help men boost their immune systems, prevent bone loss and strengthen their cardiovascular systems. While many foods provide nutritional benefits to both men and women, the following are some foods that can be especially beneficial to men.
Bananas: Rich in potassium, bananas can aid in protein metabolism, boost the immune system, help with the formation of red blood cells, and help the nervous system operate at optimal capacity. Bananas are a great source of vitamin B-6, and because they're so easily portable, bananas make a great midday snack or preworkout bite to eat on your way to the gym. In addition to providing ample potassium, bananas also are rich in magnesium, and diets rich in both potassium and magnesium can reduce a person's risk of stroke. Though women suffer more strokes each year than men, the National Stroke Association notes that is likely because women live longer than men do and stroke typically occurs at older ages. Stroke incidence is higher in men than women are at younger ages, so men, especially those with a family history of stroke, should include bananas in their diet.
Broccoli: Can help men reduce their risk of heart disease and cancer, the No. 1 and No. 2 killers, respectively, of men 35 and older. Broccoli is a great source of a phytochemical known as sulforaphane, which can help men reduce their risk for both prostate and colon cancer. Broccoli also may help men lower their levels of homocysteine, an amino acid linked to an increased risk of stroke.
Soybeans: Can be an integral part of a diet that is low in
saturated fat and cholesterol, and such diets can help men reduce their risk of heart disease. In addition, soybeans contain a substantial amount of isoflavones, which promote a healthy prostate and lower men's risk of prostate cancer. Men should consider soy products such as soy nuts, soymilk, and soy cheese to increase the nutritional value of their diets.
Oysters: Are widely considered a delicacy, but few may know that oysters also make for a healthy addition to a nutritious diet. That's because just a few oysters per day can deliver the recommended daily intake of zinc, a powerful antioxidant that research has shown can protect men against the kind of cell damage that leads to prostate cancer. Men may also experience improved sexual function by including more zinc in their diets, as research has shown that zinc can help improve sperm counts.
Whole grains: Are rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals,
which can help men improve heart health, build muscle and maintain a healthy weight. Whole grains that are rich in soluble fiber, such as oatmeal, are strong sources of B vitamins that help men lower their low-density lipoprotein, often referred to as "bad" cholesterol. Whole grain products that contain at least three to 5 grams of fiber per serving can pack a powerful punch for men looking to improve the nutritional value of their diets. azhealthandliving.com | June 2015

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Model, actress and entrepreneur English model and actress Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley is on top of the world. At age 28, she’s been in the industry nearly half of her life – first as a model for some of the world’s biggest brands and now as an actress in top films like Transformers: Dark of the Moon and the recent Mad Max: Fury Road. But, she isn’t just a pretty face – HuntingtonWhiteley has a stellar work ethic and goals that go beyond the big screen. A recent article in SELF describes it best: “Her inspirations aren’t other actresses but successful entrepreneurs like Jo Malone, the British perfumer. ‘I love products, clothes, denim and jewelry. I’ve wanted to design since I was a girl,’ HuntingtonWhiteley says… In the long run, she says, she’d like to work behind the scenes and build a brand. ‘I don’t always want to be the face of everything,’ she explains. This is the Rosie the world doesn’t know: an ambitious businesswoman who has treated each goal as a stepping-stone. ‘I think you have to take risks in life and scare yourself,’ she says. “You have to push beyond your comfort zone in order to grow.’” According to a recent article on Whatculture.com, Huntington-Whiteley is full of surprises. Some of the unexpected facts include: she was bullied as a teen, grew up on a farm, and she met Transformers director Michael Bay while shooting a commercial. 52

Her latest big blockbuster, Mad Max, debuted last month. In the film she plays Splendid, described by SELF as the “fiercely protective wife of a warlord in a post-apocalyptic world, opposite Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron.”
According to the SELF article, Huntington-Whiteley never sought out the Mad Max role – she was asked to audition. This twist of career fate has led her to imply that acting may not be the only career path in her future. “I never set out to be an actress,” she tells SELF. “I’m always open if something great comes along, but it’s not where I see my long-term future.” In addition to a bustling career, HuntingtonWhiteley leads an enviable personal life as well with longtime boyfriend Jason Statham. In fact, the busy career woman has plans to make time for family life in the future, too. “Having a family is something I think about for sure, and whether I'd live here in America or in England,' she told EDIT magazine. “But it's not always as simple as that. I have no idea what will happen, but it'll be interesting to find out, right? And nothing will be perfect, I'm sure.'” No matter what the future holds, we’re sure it’ll be nothing but successful for this leading lady! azhealthandliving.com | June 2015

How to Avoid Unhealthy Habits at the Office According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, working professionals spend an average of 8.5 hours per day at work. Many professionals spend much of their time at work sitting down in front of a computer, which can be detrimental to long-term health. Staying sedentary for long periods can contribute to a host of health ailments, including being overweight and obese. But professionals who work in offices can take various steps to ensure all that time at work is not having an adverse effect on their overall health.
Get out of your seat. Modern workplaces are built around sitting, so workers must find some time to stand up and stretch. Sitting too long can compromise posture and lead to craning of the neck for looking at the computer screen. Get out of your chair, walk around the office, and get the blood moving in your body. Pack your lunch. Bringing lunch to work puts you in greater control over the foods you are eating. You can pack a healthy and diverse selection of foods. Don't forget to bring some snacks that offer a healthy mix of protein and carbohydrates to keep your energy levels up. Otherwise, you may succumb to the temptation of the lunchroom snack machine. Take frequent breaks. Stale air inside an office environment can make you feel fatigued and less productive. Also, spending too much time behind your desk may contribute to feelings of stress and tension. Use every opportunity possible to get up and leave your office. Instead of sending an instant message or making a phone call to a co-worker, visit him or her in person. Use your lunch hour to get outside instead of eating at your desk. Plan a brief, midafternoon walk outside of your office to clear your mind and get some fresh air. 56 June 2015 | azhealthandliving.com
Disinfect surfaces often. Oftentimes, when one person at the office gets sick, many others soon follow. Colds and the flu can spread rapidly in close quarters. Keep your desk drawer stocked with some alcohol swabs or disinfecting spray and routinely clean your keyboard, mouse, touch screen and desk surfaces. You also can wipe off door handles and knobs around the office if you want to be proactive. Rest your eyes. Close your eyes and look away from the computer monitor every 20 minutes. Focusing on objects of varying distances can help keep the eyes strong and reduce fatigue. It's not difficult to remain healthy at work. Breaks, exercise and watching what you eat can help.
How to Take Back Your Downtime By MS
Many working professionals have hectic schedules. Perhaps due to technology that now allows men and women to stay connected to the office no matter where they might be, a great number of men and women now exceed the traditional full-time employment standard of 40 hours per week. In fact, data from the 2013 and 2014 Gallup Work and Education polls indicates that adults employed full time in the United States work an average of 47 hours per week, almost an entire extra workday. Some working professionals have little recourse with regard to reducing the number of hours they work each week. But those who find themselves unknowingly working extra hours, whether it's by checking work emails at home or answering business calls even after leaving the office, can take steps to regain their downtime for themselves.
Schedule activities during before or after office hours. Men and women who want to take back their downtime may benefit if they start to schedule activities during those hours that aren't meant to be spent at the office. Rather than planning on going to the gym, plans that can easily fall apart if a particularly difficult project lands on your desk, schedule sessions with a physical trainer or sign up for classes with a friend or family member. You will be less likely to work during your downtime if you have already paid for a training session or class or have scheduled a dinner date or another activity with a loved one. Especially busy professionals can plan activities for one or two weeknights per week so they know they are leaving the office on time no less than 20 percent of the time.
Encourage team-building activities with coworkers. One way to ensure you get out of the office on time is to promote team-building activities with your coworkers. Propose a company softball team or encourage your bosses to sponsor a company bowling team. Such activities can create stronger bonds between you and your coworkers, and they ensure all of you get out of the office on time at least once per week. While you won't necessarily avoid talking about work, you will be out of the office and having fun while you relax rather than sitting at your desk and burning the midnight oil.
Turn off your devices. Professionals who own smartphones or tablets can now check work emails or monitor work projects whether they're sitting in their offices or lounging on the couch at home with their families. Working men and women looking to work less during their downtime should consider turning off those devices that keep them connected to their offices. This may be more difficult than you think, as a 2013 survey conducted by Opinion Matters on behalf of GFI Software found that 39 percent of participants acknowledged checking work emails outside of standard work hours, while a whopping 81 percent of the more than 500 respondents said they check their work email on weekends. Men and women who want to regain their downtime for themselves can try turning off their devices upon leaving the office, resisting the temptation to check work emails on nights and weekends. azhealthandliving.com | June 2015

Behavior Change in Dementia Investigate – Don’t Panic! So often I’ll receive a call from clients concerned about a sudden behavioral change in a memory-impaired resident. And, all too often the cause is an introduction of new medication or a change in the dosage of an existing one. Surprisingly, the first interpretation of the behavioral change is that the “dementia has advanced.” Let me stress for the record that the progressive stages of dementia do not normally advance suddenly. Progression occurs gradually over time. So, if you notice a sudden behavioral change in a resident or a loved one, it would be wise to consider all possible contributing factors and not conclude the worst-case scenario – a sudden progression of the disease. Just such an instance happened recently with a man I will call Arthur, who is in the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s. His situation unfolded like this: His wonderful wife, Alice, regularly returns to her home country, in Europe, for a few weeks to see her family while Arthur stays home. This year, Arthur was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Alice had a decision to make, should she take her trip or stay home with Arthur? Arthur and Alice have a son who lives with them and he has been a great team member. Arthur is still working part time and attending church every week. Their daughter lives local and stops in whenever she is needed. I encouraged Alice to take the trip, knowing that this might be her last opportunity to go home for quite some time. So, Alice went to Europe and when she returned, Arthur had changed a great deal. He was sleeping all the time, had lost about 5 pounds, was not interested in doing anything (almost appeared depressed), and seemed disinterested in seeing his “dear ole Alice.” What happened?! Alice called the doctor, who said, “I think the major change of your going away pushed him into the next stage of the disease.” What a blow! Alice’s guilt quotient went through the roof. She immediately regretted her visit home and felt terrible that she chose to do what she needed to do for herself instead of staying home and caring for her husband. 60
June 2015 | azhealthandliving.com
I advised Alice that I didn’t think her being gone for a few weeks was the likely cause of Arthur’s lapse in behavior. It seemed to me that maybe there was more going on. I suggested that maybe Arthur had become a bit depressed because he missed her and within a few days, he might be better. I knew that they had been adjusting his medication before she left and asked if there were any changes made. I suggested she ask the doctors if any of the medications could have caused these changes in Arthur. As it turned out, Arthur had started a new medication just days before Alice went away. As soon as he stopped taking this medication, Arthur quickly reverted to his lovable self. There are a few lessons in this event that are worth noting. • The first is twofold. If possible, avoid starting a new medication while the primary care partner is absent for an extended period of time. Also, expect that medication changes will likely result in behavioral changes.
• Second, a change in primary care partner should not be done abruptly. Instead, the new care partner should be merged into the environment slowly while the more familiar care partner is still a part of the scene. Once the loved one appears to be at ease with the new care partner, the more familiar care partner can exit the environment. • Third lesson – we, as professionals, need to be careful when offering opinions and reasons for changes in behavior, especially if the care partner’s competency is called into question. When a behavioral change does occur, don’t panic. Instead, go through a checklist of what might be the cause. Here is a checklist I use in such instances and have found to be very helpful: 1.) Has there been any recent change in medication or dosage? 2.) Have there been any changes to the environment? 3.) Might this person have a urinary tract infection? 4.) Has the daily routine been altered? 5.) Has there been a change in care partners? 6.) Have there been new demands placed on the person? We have just begun a new year. This is a perfect time to improve your care-giving techniques in order to have more productive interaction with your loved one or a resident who is under your care. While occasional and erratic behavior is often a symptom of dementia, we should always investigate to determine if an environmental change is causing or contributing to the behavior.

Medication Safety Tips for Children & Adults Prescription and over-the-counter medications can save lives and help people of all ages manage certain conditions. When used correctly and under the guidance of a physician, medications are largely safe. It's when medicines are used off-label, shared or taken in error that reactions and injury can occur. The American Academy of Pediatrics and their Healthy Children Organization warns that more than 7,000 children visit hospital emergency rooms every year for problems related to medication errors. Children are not the only ones in danger. Adults can make mistakes with their medications as well. For example, seniors who may be managing several different types of medications can inadvertently cause dangerous drug interactions by mixing the wrong pills. Pharmacists work diligently to help prevent medication errors. However, the general public can also do their part. The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy offer these medication safety tips. · When a new medication is prescribed, ask the doctor to explain more about it, including its intended purpose and any common side effects to be expected. · Make sure your doctor knows about all the medications you are taking, including nonprescription products, herbal remedies, dietary supplements and vitamins. Some medications do not mix with seemingly innocent ingredients. Keep a running list of any medicines you take so you can easily and accurately share this information with your physician. · Question anything that you do not understand. Check the prescription for dosing information. For refills, make sure the refill information conforms to the original prescription strength. · Fill all prescriptions at the same pharmacy and develop a rapport with the pharmacist so that potential drug interactions will be flagged. Pharmacists are well versed in medications and may be able to inform you as to the safety or risk involved in taking an over-the-counter product at the same time that you are on a prescription. 62

· Many pills look the same. If you are confused and taking multiple medications, keep medications in the original packaging and double-check the labels before taking any medications. · Use the right dosing tools. A spoon from the kitchen is not accurate for measuring out a teaspoon of medication. · If you take multiple medications, use a pillbox to keep pills organized. The box makes it easier to manage medications and serves as a reminder if you have or have not taken a medication on a given day. · Store medications as instructed on the label. The bathroom medicine cabinet may not be an ideal place to store medications, as bathrooms get damp, and that can compromise the integrity of the pills. Also, bathroom cabinets are readily accessible by all, including kids. It's better to store drugs out of sight and reach of children. Keep dangerous medications locked away. · Routinely discard expired or unneeded medications. Medicine take-back programs for disposal are a good way to remove medicines from the home and reduce the chance that others may accidentally take the medicine. · Consult with a doctor before beginning or ending medication. Medicines play important roles in personal health. When used correctly, medications are assets, but caution should always be taken to ensure safe usage and storage of any medications
Simple Ways to Maintain Your Mental Acuity By Ms
Many people know that a combination of a healthy diet and routine exercise is the best way to maintain their physical health. But what about mental well-being? Memory lapses are often assumed an accepted side effect of aging, but such an assumption is incorrect, as there are many steps men and women can take to maintain their mental acuity well into their golden years.
Find time for cardiovascular exercise. Cardiovascular exercise can help men and women maintain healthy weights and reduce their risk for potentially deadly ailments like diabetes and heart disease. But cardiovascular exercise also can boost brainpower. Cardiovascular exercise pumps oxygen-rich blood to the brain, and that blood contains glucose that can fuel brain cells. Cardiovascular exercise also strengthens blood vessels, which can help prevent potentially devastating diseases, such as stroke that can have a lasting and negative impact on cognitive function. Find time for friends and family. Many people need no reason to socialize, but those that do can now cite boosting brain function as a great reason to get together with family and friends. Routine socialization can keep a brain sharp by reducing its levels of cortisol, a potentially destructive hormone brought on by stress. Researchers also believe that routine interaction with other people stimulates structures in the brain's frontal lobe that are likely responsible for planning, decision making and response control.
Squeeze in a nap every so often. Naps can have a reenergizing effect on men and women, but a study from German researchers also found that naps also could improve memory. In the study, researchers divided participants into three groups: people who would stay awake for 60 minutes; people who would sleep for six minutes; and people who would sleep for 30 to 45 minutes. After the hour was up, participants were given a word recall test, and those who slept performed better on the test than those who hadn't. But the development that was perhaps most interesting was that those who slept for just six minutes performed just as well on the test as those who slept for far longer, leading researchers to suggest that men and women need not take long naps to improve their memories.
Naps can have a reenergizing effect on men and women, but a study from German researchers also found that naps also could improve memory. Include fish in your diet. A study from researchers at Chicago's Rush University Medical Center found that people who eat fish once per week have a 60 percent lower risk of developing Alzheimer's disease than those who do not include fish in their weekly diets. Researchers credit this lower risk to DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid that is found in both the brain and in fish such as salmon and tuna. azhealthandliving.com | June 2015
