Want Luscious Lips This Valentine's Day? A specialized art, not your basic Lip Service

As we age and begin to lose our lip shape and luster, the idea of having anything done about it petrifies most women. There are so many train wrecks walking around and the thought of the backlash from husbands, friends and family is just not worth the risk! As with other facial changes happening in the aging process, the lips atrophy and wrinkle leaving a shriveled appearance complete with harsh radiating lip lines. Lip augmentation like any art is also performed for fun and enhancement of beauty. When considering this procedure it is important to remember the reality of one’s own anatomy as well as partnering with a provider that understands the anatomy and art of lip augmentation. Lip relationship or ratio of upper to lower lip size. The general societal eye prefers a lower lip larger than upper lip or what we call infer par. Some people do however have a natural ratio of Supre Par (upper lip larger), or Par (equal upper to lower ratio). It is important to maintain the natural ratio of a patient’s lips by augmenting or replacing volume to reflect what naturally enhances a womans facial structure and natural beauty. When significant volume loss has occurred due to ageing, or dealing with a naturally very thin lip, photos from youthful years and or magazine pictures may be used to understand what the patient is looking for.

Infer Par

Perfect Contour Light Reflection

Lip Shape. Often patients will bring in magazine photos with lip shapes completely contradictory to their natural shape. Again discussion and realistic expectations must occur before augmentation begins. In the past few years augmentation is all over the board with attempts to change natural lip shape, leading to the platypus lip, or sausage lips! Preserving the lateral shape in relation to the central shape maintains a youthful, natural, pretty shape. Over augmentation of the central or lateral aspects of the lip will always look unnatural and forced. Lip Contour and Volume. Probably the most important component of lip augmentation, this is the look from a patient’s profile, and volume. The vermillion border is the thin piping outlining the lip and should be thin not overfilled to look duck-like. Correcting this also improves radiating lip lines. How the light hits the lip from afar should reflect on the upper central border, and lower lip reflection should be lower central. Over filling will deflect the light to other areas and look too filled or like a duck. A very natural lip can absolutely be achieved when remembering these components and applying the art of the augmentation. Woman should consult with providers before committing and feel comfortable with their decision. Pain can be avoided with numbing so treat yourself this Valentines day to youthful natural looking lips!

Together We Can Make a Difference...

“And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.” 1 John 4:16 Welcome, to our Relationship Issue! Nowadays, many live hurried lives, while trying to meet the demands of relationships and commitments, there is seldom time left for thinking about anything else. However, we must not forget the relationship that always remains to give us strength at all times—the only relationship that never ceases, fails or changes – our relationship with GOD! This is the only commitment and relationship that should be put FIRST! How can we interact righteously with others or fulfill our commitments if are not placing God FIRST? For those who are celebrating this month with a loved one, memories of a loved or wanting this month to pass. Here are some scriptures to encourage you and guide you to focus on the one who loves you more than anyoneGOD! John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 1 John 3:1 Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. 1 John 4:7-12 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

1 John 3:1 Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 8:37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. Ephesians 3:18-20 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, 1 John 4:12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. Matthew 22:37-39 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Until next time,

Local Enrollment Services

Helping valley residents navigate the health insurance marketplace The Affordable Care Act requires every U.S. citizen to have health insurance coverage. The last day to be eligible for a government subsidy for this year is Feb. 15, 2015. While many Valley residents scramble to meet the upcoming deadline in order to avoid costly penalties, Local Enrollment Services is providing tools to make the enrollment, reenrollment and health care education process as simple as can be. Local Enrollment Services is Arizona’s first accessible, complimentary service in a kiosk setting that assists people with obtaining health insurance. The company is designed to help people choose the best health insurance for themselves and their families at the lowest possible rate. Experienced representatives provide customers with professional assistance and free education in a self-service setting. Understanding that the process can often be complicated and confusing, Nate Plett, owner of Local Enrollment Services, launched his business because he is passionate about assisting and educating people in making the smartest health insurance decisions for themselves and their families. “We are committed to helping Arizona consumers make the most intelligent and informed decisions about purchasing health insurance,” Plett says. “We want our customers to feel confident in making a decision and we want to make sure they have all of the information and knowledge necessary to choose the health insurance policy that is truly best for them.”

Local Enrollment Services features licensed agents who help individuals, families and businesses navigate the health care changes and become savvy health care shoppers, enabling them to take control of the many health insurance options. Designed to be a convenient, fast, free way for people to sign up for health insurance, Local Enrollment Services provides participants with a quick sign-in process that takes as little as 15 minutes. “Our system is simple and straightforward,” Plett says. “We have a calculator for calculating your tax subsidy our representatives are trained to help individuals navigate through different plan options. Many people aren’t even aware that they are eligible for tax subsidies, although 75 percent of Americans qualify.” Additionally, the experts at Local Enrollment Services are able to look up individual policies to confirm an individual’s regular doctor is on the same network and whether it will cover the prescription drugs they may take. According to Plett, last year many people complained about having to change doctors because their regular specialists were not covered by the health insurance options they opted for. “It won’t happen here,” he assures. “We will help you do your due diligence in researching all of the details that matter to you – big or small.” If you signed up for health insurance in 2014, your policy will renew as long as you continue to make payments. However, if you think you should blow it off this time around, you may want to reconsider, as you may find a better deal and/or plan for the coverage you are seeking.

California Sea Lions at Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park! By Dr. Grey Stafford

As its name implies, the California sea lion is found along the U.S. west coast north to Canada and south to Mexico. Unlike true seals, sea lions have external ear flaps along with rear flippers that can be folded underneath their body for greater upright mobility on land. The rear flippers on seals can only point backward which means sea lions are much more mobile on land than seals. With torpedo shaped bodies, sea lions are incredibly acrobatic swimmers. Their normal cruising speed is usually much less than their maximum speed bursts of up to about 20 MPH. Using their front flippers for locomotion, sea lions have been observed diving to depths up to 900 feet and may hold their breath for several minutes at a time. Sea Lions are highly intelligent animals known for their ability to learn complex voluntary husbandry behaviors based on positive reinforcement. In fact, Wildlife World staff has already taught them how to use a platform scale to measure their body weights each morning as part of a comprehensive preventative health care plan. HEART OF THE COMMUNITY Information Courtesy of the Anthony Bates Foundation and Sharon Bates

Anthony Bates Foundation “Screening Young Hearts… Saving Young Lives” In 2000, Phoenix mom Sharon Bates experienced every parent’s worst nightmare when her only son, Anthony, passed unexpectedly from undiagnosed Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Anthony was 20-years-old, a lifelong athlete, honor’s student, and football player at Kansas State University. Tragically, Anthony’s early passing may have been prevented with a proper heart screening. “Each year he was required to have a ‘pre-participation sports physical.’ Heart examinations were not part of this annual process. Anthony's HCM might have been detected when he had an electrocardiogram (EKG) in conjunction with surgery on his finger, but there was no detection of his heart problem than either,” Bates says. “Though EKGs are required in surgery, 10 percent of people with HCM have normal EKGs. Apparently, Anthony must have been in that 10 percent. Young, strong and a dedicated athlete, Anthony never complained of any symptoms. Sadly, his perfect health was an illusion.” According to the Mayo Clinic, “Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a disease in which the heart muscle (myocardium) becomes abnormally thick (hypertrophied). The thickened heart muscle can make it harder for the heart to pump blood. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy often goes undiagnosed because many people with the disease have few, if any, symptoms.” The Anthony Bates Foundation (ABF), founded in Anthony’s honor, adds this: “HCM is a genetic heart disease that attacks the heart muscle, typically during the teenage years. The only way to detect HCM is through an echocardiogram (sonogram image) of the heart. With early detection, a person can have a normal and productive life.” This condition can lead to many maladies, including sudden cardiac arrest. “When he died, I was devastated, angry, hurt, and needed to find a solution to make sense of the senselessness that had occurred to me and my family,” Sharon Bates explains. “I poured my life into the ‘after Anthony’ to build the legacy he was never provided… As I learned more about HCM, I became more stubborn in the need to protect the children of our country. HCM does not have to be a 16 February 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

death sentence. With simple medications and a lifestyle change, a person can live a long and productive life.” Bates went on to found the Anthony Bates Foundation in 2002. The nonprofit’s mission is “The Anthony Bates Foundation (ABF) believes that no parent should suffer the heartbreak of losing a child to an undiagnosed cardiac malady; we seek to eliminate preventable Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). The organization will fulfill its mission by continuing our efforts to establish a nationwide heart screening program for youth, free of charge or low cost, thus solving a significant public health issue through screenings, education, collaboration and facilitation.” The ABF provides free/low-cost heart screenings across Arizona and several other states. Of course, Bates hopes her organization can continue to grow and spread awareness on a national level. In addition to providing screenings, ABF provides education to everyone from Photos courtesy of Anthony Bates Foundation

concerned parents to medical professionals. ABF is also the only organization screening our nation's youth with a copyrighted training protocol, as well as a collection mechanism of epidemiological data, which provides valuable information for researchers and medical professionals. Bates is also a co-founding member of Parent Heart Watch, a nonprofit described as “the national voice solely dedicated to protecting youth from Sudden Cardiac Arrest.” Parent Heart Watch, incorporated in late 2005, is a state-by-state network of parents and partners solely dedicated to reducing the often-disastrous effects of Sudden Cardiac Arrest in youth. “Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) can happen to anyone at any time,” Bates wants others to know. Many times, SCA can occur without symptoms (some of which are: chest pains, dizziness, fainting, heart palpitations or a racing heart) or warning signs such as family history. People should be proactive about their heart health, watch for

symptoms, know their bodies and get screened and the right care before they end up a statistic. Heart disease is not a death sentence. With proper care and, in many cases, medication or lifestyle changes, a person can live a wonderfully productive life.” To donate or learn more about the Anthony Bates Foundation, visit AnthonyBates.org. Atrial Fibrillation & Heart Disease When working properly, the human heart is a wonder. The heart's two upper chambers work in conjunction with the two lower chambers to deliver blood and oxygen to every area of the body. Sometimes the heart may beat irregularly and rapidly, in which a person is experiencing atrial fibrillation, commonly shortened to AF or "afib." When a person is healthy, the atria (upper chambers) of his or her heart contract, followed by the ventricles (lower chambers) in a normal sinus rhythm. When timed perfectly, this beating enables the efficient flow of blood throughout the body. Normally, the heart beats at a rate of 60 to 100 times per minute at rest. When atrial fibrillation occurs, the electrical rhythm of the heart is not orderly and many different impulses fire rapidly at once, causing a chaotic rhythm in the atria, which can no longer effectively contract blood into the ventricles. The result is an irregular, fast heartbeat that may range in 300 to 600 beats per minute at rest. There is no one cause of AF, which has been linked to a number of different heart conditions. These include, but are not limited to, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, heart valve disease, cardiomyopathy, congenital heart disease and pulmonary embolism. Hyperthyroidism and excessive alcohol consumption as well as pneumonia and certain lung conditions also may contribute to AF. The Mayo Clinic says the older a person is, the greater his or her risk for atrial fibrillation. Around 8 percent of the United States population over the age of 80 has AF. Fainting, chest pain, lightheadedness, confusion, and shortness of breath may be symptoms of AF. Others with AF have reported palpitations, which are the sensation of a racing heartbeat that almost seems like the heart is flopping in the chest. Very often people spend several years with AF without knowing it.

In many cases, AF exhibits no symptoms and a person may not realize that the heart is beating erratically. 26

February 2015

| azhealthandliving.com

A doctor will diagnose AF through a variety of different tests. An electrocardiogram, or ECG, graphs an image of the electrical impulses traveling through the heart. This is one of the more common ways to diagnose AF. A monitor may be worn for a few days to continuously record the heart rhythm.

Treating AF may require a series of medications to prevent clots and reset the rhythm of the heart. Resetting the rhythm is known as cardioversion, which can be done with medication or through a brief electrical shock under sedation. Blood-thinning medications, such as Warfarin, may be prescribed. Such medications help the blood stay thin and prevent clotting. Routine checkups may be needed while taking a blood-thinner because small cuts can result in significant blood loss. Drugs used to keep the heart rate normal and prevent future episodes of AF include sotalol, dronedarone, dofetilide and amiodarone. AF may recur even when treatment is effective. It may take some time to get the right balance of treatment to prevent future bouts of AF, but there is no guarantee it won't come back. Working in concert with a qualified doctor can make the process go more smoothly, and treatment with medication may need to continue throughout a person's life.

By MS & Marfan Foundation

Understanding Marfan Syndrome Can Save Lives According to the Marfan Foundation an estimated 200,000 people have a connective tissue genetic disorder or a related disorder known as Marfan syndrome, half of them have not been diagnosed and are at risk of a sudden early death. Marfan syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects the body’s connective tissue. Connective tissue holds all the body’s cells, organs and tissue together. It also plays an important role in helping the body grow and develop properly. Connective tissue is made up of proteins. The protein that plays a role in Marfan syndrome is called fibrillin-1. Marfan syndrome is caused by a defect (or mutation) in the gene that tells the body how to make fibrillin-1. This mutation results in an increase in a protein called transforming growth factor beta, or TGF-β. The increase in TGF-β causes problems in connective tissues throughout the body, which in turn creates the features and medical problems associated with Marfan syndrome and some related disorders. Because connective tissue is found throughout the body, Marfan syndrome can affect many different parts of the body, as well. Features of the disorder are most often found in the heart, blood vessels, bones, joints and eyes. Marfan syndrome does not affect intelligence. The Marfan Foundation says about 3 out of 4 people with Marfan syndrome inherit it, meaning they get the genetic mutation from a parent who has it. But some people with Marfan syndrome are the first in their family to have it; when this happens, it is called a spontaneous mutation. There is a 50 percent chance that a person with Marfan syndrome will pass along the genetic mutation each time they have a child.

While men, women, and children of all races and ethnic groups are born with Marfan syndrome, symptoms are not always present at birth. Some signs are easy to see Long arms, legs and fingers Tall and thin body type Curved spine Chest sinks in or sticks out Flexible joints Flat feet Crowded teeth Stretch marks on the skin that are not related to weight gain or loss

Other signs are harder to detect

Understanding Marfan syndrome can help save lives.

Other signs may be more difficult to detect because they can be happening internally. The aorta of the heart may become enlarged or bulging, plus there may be separation of the layers of the aorta, which can cause it to tear. Marfan syndrome may cause visual impairment and early cataracts. Lung collapse and other issues in the respiratory system may lead to asthma and sleep apnea.

Every person’s experience with Marfan syndrome is slightly different. No one has every feature and people have different combinations of features. Some features of Marfan syndrome are easier to see than others.

Getting an accurate diagnosis of Marfan syndrome can help individuals receive proper treatment and manage the disease. Although there is no cure, with proper care those with Marfan syndrome can live full, healthy lives.

While men, women, and children of all races and ethnic groups are born with Marfan syndrome, symptoms are not always present at birth.

The Art of Listening Eight Tips to Help You Truly Hear Others If you were asked, “Are you a good listener?” chances are you would answer “yes.” Maybe you pride yourself on your ability to stay quiet even when you really want to interject, or maybe you believe that you give sound advice after hearing another person’s problem or dilemma. However, you might not be listening as well as you think. The truth is there’s a lot more to listening than simply letting people talk. Listening is actually a powerful skill that must be mindfully developed. When you truly listen to others, you give them the valuable gifts of respect, compassion and acknowledgment. Becoming a good listener is an enhancement for your life, too—both personally and professionally. True listening strengthens your relationships, helps you to learn more, keeps you in the moment, and shows others how to listen to you effectively, too. Here are eight tips to help you cultivate the art of listening.

Eliminate distractions. Your physical environment can play a large role in how well you’re able to listen to other people. It’s not always possible, of course, but if you know that a conversation is important, be proactive about removing anything that might distract you from being totally present. Go to a quiet place, mute your cell phone and turn off the television. Turn off your mental track. Try to turn off the constant chatter in your head while the other person speaks. Don’t think ahead to formulate a response or try to figure out how to “fix” his problem, as this will distract you from being in the moment. Just listen.

Be still. We are all familiar with the concept of an “animated speaker.” Most of us don’t think about animated listeners, but they exist too! Over the course of your next few conversations, pay attention to the other person’s body language as you talk arm movements, facial expressions, shifting positions, etc. These things aren’t always, but can be, distracting.

Try to engage not only your ears, but also your heart and mind, in fully understanding what is being said. Remember, a conversation in which you are primarily a listener is not about your own needs and desires, but the other person’s.

Especially when the conversation is serious or important, try to keep your nonverbal reactions to a minimum. You may find it helpful to clasp your hands in your lap and keep your eyes focused on a particular spot, such as the speaker’s face.

30 February 2015| azhealthandliving.com

Restate what you heard. Especially when something important is being discussed, make sure that you understood (as opposed to simply heard) what was said. Even if you have been doing your best to keep your ego out of the way, it’s still possible that you’ve misunderstood. Once the other person has stopped speaking, confirm that you are both on the same page. For example, you might say, ‘So, what you’re telling me is that you think your boss has been avoiding you and you’re afraid you might be laid off, correct?’

Save your stories. When someone tells you a story, it’s human nature to want to fire back with your own. You know how it goes: “That’s so funny, because the same thing happened to my cousin one time…” or “I know exactly what you mean, because I was in a similar situation several years ago at my former job…” Suppress the impulse to respond this way, because it swings the conversation back to you. You may think you are connecting by finding common ground, but from the other person’s perspective, you’re downplaying the issues or concerns she has just laid on the table. Instead, stay focused on the point your companion is trying to make or the problem she is experiencing.

Ask how you can help. Especially if you’re talking to a friend or loved one who is going through a difficult time, you may want to find a solution or lessen the other person’s pain. However, keep in mind that sometimes what people need most is to unload, be heard and not to be fixed. Explicitly ask the other person what he wants from you after he has finished talking. If your companion asks for your help or advice, give it. However, don’t be surprised if you hear, “I just needed someone to listen. Thank you.”

Keep it to yourself. Even if you think a conversation wasn’t important be careful about whom you share it with. One of the most important aspects of listening is being trustworthy.

Be honest. From time to time, you may find yourself listening to someone who has the facts wrong or who is out of line. If this person asks for your feedback, how should you respond, knowing that she won’t like what you have to say?

This point may seem obvious, but the truth is, it’s often all too easy for your mouth to get ahead of your mind in conversations — and once you’ve developed a reputation as a gossip, it’s hard to repair. That’s why it’s important to stay mindful even after you’ve finished speaking with a particular person. You need to demonstrate that your friends and loved ones can feel safe with you that you won’t spread their concerns around your social circle or judge them.

It’s not always easy, but part of being a good listener is being honest. You can’t condone the other person’s bad behavior or lie to them just to keep the peace. Be gentle, but tell the truth. In most cases, the other person will ultimately respect you for your honesty.

Overall, keep in mind that the art of listening revolves around being interested, not interesting. When another person is confiding in you, your primary role is not to be entertaining or even to offer solutions—it’s to show your companion consideration and respect. azhealthandliving.com | February 2015

How to Make a Date with Yourself for Valentine’s Day Whether you’re married, single or divorced, Valentine’s Day’s emphasis on romance and the expectations it sparks can create more stress than joy for many people. There can be pressure Feb. 14 for anyone. The ‘happily single’ may begin to have doubts; spouses may question the quality of their marital relationship; and for someone who recently experienced a breakup, the holiday can bring nothing but heartache. This Valentine’s Day plan a date with yourself, no matter your current relationship — view Valentine’s Day as an opportunity for personal growth.

If you’re single … The holiday is not just for couples; it’s for anyone who wants to strengthen a relationship, including the one with yourself. This is, after all, the most important and truly lifelong relationship we all have. Being comfortable in your own skin and in silence and with your own thoughts is a sign of self-acceptance and emotional maturity. So, what kind of date would you take you on? Meditation can be like confronting yourself for the first time, mentally naked. Can you literally do nothing but keep quiet and still for 5, 10 or 20 minutes? Maybe you want to take yourself on an adventure – consider spending a day or evening visiting places you’d never otherwise go or you may simply cook yourself your favorite meal – or go out. Dinner for one is much cheaper!

If you have a spouse … Even though you likely won’t be alone on Valentine’s Day, there’s no reason you shouldn’t spend some time working on the relationship you have with yourself. Some couples participate in “girls’ (or boys’) night out” to establish a measure of independence in their relationship, but that’s not the same as spending quality time alone. Try a peaceful walk-in the park, fishing or spending a few hours with a great novel. If you have plans Feb. 14, make some time for yourself Feb. 13. It can make date night on the next day all the more rewarding. 32

February 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

If you’re divorced or recently heartbroken … As with a romance, you shouldn’t limit your focus on improving your relationship to just one day of the year. Take yourself out to somewhere that’s a treat; be spontaneous; think about your dreams and priorities – the ones that come from your passions, talents and skills. Most importantly, be loving on this “date.” Whether or not you’re eager to find another romantic partner, you’ll be in a better place to meet Mr. or Ms. Right if you’re confident in your feelings about you. Your past relationships do not define you, but they can make you stronger and wiser.

Q. What is new in improving balance and preventing falls?

Q. What is new in improving balance and preventing falls?

A. It is very common that gravity, over many decades, shows its effects in increased drooping and bagginess of eyelids, both upper and lower. These conditions can now be very effectively treated with Laser Blepharoplasty, a treatment where the skin of the eyelids is tightened with laser precision. Traditionally this has been done in the past with a scalpel, but we now have the laser technique, which can accomplish eyelid tightening more precisely, and significantly minimize the bruising and swelling seen with the more traditional methods. With the laser technology, you can return to your normal activities by the following day.

A. Vertigo, dizziness and balance problems

Q. For eyelid tightening, should I consult a plastic surgeon or an eye surgeon? A. We have great respect for our plastic surgeon colleagues for performing body procedures such as liposuction, tummy tucks, etc. However, when thinking about performing delicate work around the eyes, ophthalmologists like us are rather territorial when it comes to eyelids. The function of the eyelids in protecting our eyes must be respected. Eyelids are the windshield wipers for our eyes. Removing the eyelid bags in a fashion that leads to a pleasing cosmetic result yet safely preserves eyelid function for the eyes is our greatest priority. Having an experienced eye surgeon, combined with the advantages of laser technologies, are important priorities in the successful rejuvenation of eyelids.

often lead to falls and injuries. These types of problems can seriously reduce the quality of life in many patients. Balance disorders and their treatment have traditionally involved exercises, called vestibular rehab, to retrain the inner ear. Too often these exercises prove to be inadequate leaving the patient unsteady and at risk of falling. Recent research into falls and balance problems suggests that rehabilitation must address more than just the inner ear for successful treatment. The inner ear is an important component of the balance network of the human nervous system; however, it is only one of a number of important components. Failure to address all of the individual parts of the balance network will often lead to inadequate treatment response. In addition to the inner ear, information from the muscles and joints of the body, called proprioception, must be rehabilitated. Eye movement is also important for balance. Your vision can be 20/20, but if the movement of your eyes is impaired, a condition called oculomotor apraxia; it is very difficult to maintain your balance. Finally, the cerebellum located at the base of your brain and a specific region of the brain called the parietal lobe all need to work together with the inner ear to support balance, posture and walking ability.

Q. How are brown age spots removed? A. There are many techniques and treatments available to remove freckles and age spots, but what many people do not realize is that brown spots can be removed in a few, quick treatments. Photo facial treatments use IPL (intense pulsed light) to treat a wide variety of skin conditions, such as freckles, age spots, acne, broken capillaries, rosacea and some cases of melasma. A photo facial is similar to a laser treatment in that it uses light energy to target pigment and redness while leaving the remaining skin untouched. It causes no damage to the dermis or epidermis. Once the treatment is complete, the spots will turn very dark and will fall off the face in about a week. As the skin cells naturally regenerate and fall off, the destroyed spots fall off as well. The treatment takes about 15 minutes and feels similar to numerous rubber band snaps. The skin may be red and warm for a few hours. This treatment is suitable for lighter skin types and not recommended for darker skin. The technician should always do a test spot on a hidden area before proceeding with the treatment, to ensure correct treatment levels and that the patient is a good candidate. Treatments cost anywhere from $100-$300 depending on the physician or med spa.

Therefore, to treat dizziness and imbalance, specific exercises must be aimed at all the components of the balance network. Q. How can you reduce anxiety about

Q. What are some common external Q. Does sleep-disordered breathing

A. Dentists hear about fears and anxiety on a daily basis. It’s terrible to hear that patients have had experiences that have kept them from keeping their oral health a priority. Unfortunately, many people have had a bad experience visiting a dentist from bad customer service to poorly done work. However that should not discourage you from taking care of your teeth and gums.

A. External eye conditions most frequently A. Restful sleep is like a respite for your

going to the dentist?

The best way to decrease your dental anxiety is, of course, to find the right dentist that will take the time to get to know you and listen to your concerns. With the Internet at our disposal, many feel overwhelmed by the number of offices in their area. The best way to find a dentist that does quality work and treats their patients with care is by word-of-mouth. Ask your family and friends where they go and what they like about their dental office. Almost every dental office would be glad to answer your questions. Do not be afraid to call and ask what treatments they provide. Calling in is also a great way to gauge their customer service and their scheduling availability. If you know your fear is bigger than just finding the right office, you can speak with the office about what they offer to make their patients comfortable. If they can win you over with headphones, eye masks or maybe a movie, it is great to know that they prioritize your comfort.

involve the eyelid. The most common external eye conditions are blepharitis, styes and chalazia. While they can affect vision in extreme cases, they mostly cause pain and irritation on the eyelid itself and are usually treated easily. Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelid around the eyelash follicle usually caused by an overgrowth of bacteria that normally reside on the skin. Blepharitis presents with red irritated eyelids with scales that stick to the base of the eyelash. Eyelids may be swollen, itch and burn. Treatment usually involves daily cleansing of the eyelids with mild soaps or special eyelid cleansers. In severe cases, antibiotic ointments may be helpful.

body. The body doesn’t shut off completely, but while asleep it is allowed to rest from the normal pace at which it must function during the day. The heart needs this welldeserved relaxation. However, just as the body relaxes, so does the airway. If you suffer from sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), instead of getting a restful sleep, your body is shocked awake every time your airway becomes obstructed. The rush of adrenaline to wake you causes your heart to beat faster and taxes its functioning. A rapid heartbeat causes the blood to attempt to circulate faster through the body, resulting in high blood pressure. The National Institutes of Health determined in 2000 that people with obstructive sleep apnea are at special risk for high blood pressure. According, to The Journal of the American Medical Association middle-aged adults with sleep apnea have a 45 percent higher risk of high blood pressure than those without the condition.

Q. What causes low back pain? A. Chronic low back pain is a common

musculoskeletal condition affects patients of all age group. One common cause of low back pain is the weakness of the abdominal muscles also known as the core muscles. Our low back muscle forms a boundary that is part of your abdominal region, which means there is functional interaction between the low back and the abdominal muscles. The weakness of the core muscle could increase the load of the spine, and you may feel stiffness and spasm in your low back. You don’t feel well especially when you slightly lean forward due to the tight muscle on your low back and weakness of the abdominal muscle on the front. Conditions such as weight gain, trauma, abdominal surgery, poor posture, and lack of exercise may affect functions of the core muscles. Manual therapies, strengthening and stretching help chronic low back pain. Manual therapies are usually specified as soft tissue massage and passive stretching. Manual therapies seek to break the adhesion between muscle cells, and the goals of stretching and strengthening is to reduce stiffness and improve movement of the muscle and joint affected with pain. Core strengthening exercise is beneficial to stabilize your low back and prevent pain from occurring. There are more factors about what causes chronic low back pain. According to the National Institute of arthritis, some of the risk factors that increase chance of low back pain include age, various diseases, diet, occupation, race and heredity.

Q. How can laser treatment combat the signs of aging?

A. Multiple factors contribute to skin aging: loss of elasticity results in laxity, accumulation of sun damage results in irregular pigmentation and delayed cell turnover results in a dull complexion. Each of these factors needs to be addressed when treating the aging face. Advanced laser treatments are now available, which can stimulate collagen to improve elasticity, remove brown pigment for complexion blending, and resurface the skin for smoothing texture. Laxity: Titan™ is a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved laser that provides a noninvasive treatment for skin laxity. It is the only treatment on the market that can evenly deliver energy to the deep dermal layer of the skin to stimulate collagen. Titan will boost your existing collagen and trigger the growth of new collagen. Pigment: Fotofacial™ is a series of intense pulsed light treatments that treat irregular pigmentation. Fotofacial ™ can erase brown pigment spots caused by sun damage or hormone changes. This no-downtime treatment can be performed on face, chest, and hands or anywhere you want to remove brown spots. Texture: Pearl™ Laser Resurfacing uses a computer controlled laser beam to gently remove the top layer of skin that has been damaged by the environment, sun exposure and the aging process. As this new high-tech laser resurfaces the skin, it also stimulates the production of collagen, resulting in a smooth new surface.

Q. I think I have a hernia. What are my options and when should I seek medical attention?

A. A hernia occurs when an abdominal organ or other tissue has abnormally protruded through the abdominal wall cavity. They may cause little to no pain at first. A hernia can be in your groin, on your abdomen, or associated with a previous scar. A bulge or hernia that is associated with redness, nausea, or severe pain can mean a strangulated hernia. A strangulated hernia is always a dangerous condition in which the blood supply to the hernia and to its contents is cut off. It must be addressed immediately before sepsis sets in, which can lead to death. A hernia will not go away on its own and will not get better. Delaying treatment can only increase your risk for strangulation and increase your risk for complications. A strangulated hernia will require a traditional open surgery, a 3-5 day hospital stay, as well as a prolonged recovery time. Laparoscopic surgery is best instituted early on, where healing, recovery, and postoperative pain are all significantly improved over traditional open surgery. A laparoscopic procedure allows for smaller incisions, quicker recovery, less pain and no hospital stay. Typically, the procedure can be done through three micro incisions in less than an hour. Now is the time to address your hernia, don’t wait for complications. Your health should come first.

Hearing aids are designed to receive federal program. sound from several different directions and process those sounds individually. In contrast, most audio devices send sound from one speaker, which takes away the hearing aid’s ability to process the sound appropriately. The sound quality of television sets and even sound systems is very poor in comparison to the high quality sound that is produced by the hearing aids that are available to today’s consumers. This means that even with the best quality hearing aids, you are still only going to hear the poor quality of sound coming from the TV. Individuals with hearing loss are also still dealing with an impaired ability to separate different sounds and even understand the sounds they are hearing. There are many assistive listening devices (ALDs) available to individuals with a hearing impairment. Many hearing aids today are Bluetooth compatible, which means that they can be programmed to work wirelessly with Bluetooth compatible telephones. This allows the user to bypass the speaker on the phone completely and send the signal directly to the hearing aid for amplification. This is also an option for sound coming from your television; however, this does require an additional transmitter that can be plugged into the TV itself. This transmitter can be plugged in to almost any device that is equipped with an audio output port.

I often hear from Medicare beneficiaries with limited resources who have been denied Medicaid benefits by their local State Department of Economic Security and think that there is no other help available to them. Many are completely unaware of this federal program exclusively designed to help pay for the cost of prescriptions drugs, monthly premiums, annual deductibles and co-pays associated with a Medicare prescription drug plan (Part D). To qualify for Limited Income Subsidy (LIS), there are conditions that need to be met: 1. You must be enrolled in Medicare A or B 2. Income and Resources must meet qualifying limits 3. Applications must be submitted and approved before benefits are available LIS is available on a sliding scale up to 150 percent of the Federal Poverty Level. The annual income benchmark is $17,505 (single) & $23,595 (couple). However, I encourage those with slightly higher resources to apply because individual circumstances are evaluated and taken into consideration. Once approved, Rx co-pays will be greatly reduced, the coverage gap (donut hole) will be waived, deductibles, and/or penalties will be eliminated, and plan premiums will be partially or completely subsidized. LIS will not affect your current Medicare plan. Those who qualify will also have a continual open enrollment so plan changes can be made throughout the year. Six Ways to Give Yourself a 'Breakover' There’s a reason Neil Sedaka’s “Breaking Up is Hard to Do” became a pop classic – because it’s true! But breakups can also be a time to reflect and embark on a new chapter in your life. Many people have been through a romantic heartbreak, which can be among life’s biggest challenges. But being single after a committed relationship can also be a good time to rejuvenate yourself. We cater to the growing number of people looking for meaningful ways to bring closure to their past and move forward with confidence. For those who have recently experienced a split, here are several ways to turn your breakup into a makeover – a ‘breakover’.

Empower yourself with the gift of health. It’s almost a cliché that exes lose weight after splitting up. Some lose their appetite due to melancholy and some are motivated to look and feel better with exercise and dieting. Don’t punish yourself with Spartan regimens. Eat nutritious foods and train sensibly.

Treat yourself to a new wardrobe. Clothing can be the bearers of painful reminders, like the sweater he or she got you last year. Consider freshening up your style with new clothes – hey, you’ll probably need them anyway with all that exercise. A new wardrobe can serve as a healthy reminder of the new you.

Be proactive with your reading. There are many genres of self-help literature, from spiritual to academic. But don’t limit yourself to nonfiction; classic literature not only gives you a great education, it also helps readers increase empathy and better understand emotional complexity.

Consider a healthy reminder of the new you. It’s a tradition in our society to commemorate a romantic union or celebration with jewelry. Your breakup may likewise be a blessing that allows you to grow as an individual. Consider a ring or other piece of jewelry that will not only mark this milestone but also be a personal reminder of your transformation and new beginning. 44

Valentine’s Day isn’t about being alone; it's about being yourself. Travel adds perspective on a new journey. Whether or not you realize it, a breakup is the beginning of a new life trajectory. Travel – whether it’s time for a change of domestic scenery or a vacation – perfectly symbolizes a new journey. Overcoming a painful separation requires an outside perspective, which is often gained through travel. Invite friends over for a dinner party. The depression that is liable to ensue after a breakup often leads to isolation, but that is when you most need your friends! Why not host a breakup party? Rather than blowing it out with a large group of people, which may include strangers, keep it simple with intimate friends you can trust.

How to Help Children Make New Friends

While many children find it easy to make new friends, others might need some assistance so they can make the most of opportunities to socialize and form friendships.

Offer opportunities for socialization. Children should

be given the opportunity to explore friendships outside of school where peer pressure might not be so prevalent. Establish a carpool or invite a classmate over for a play date. Unstructured time to play or get to know each other is a great way to establish friendships. Invite new children over each time to see which friendships are the strongest, but make sure you are not pushing a friendship on your child.

Discover common interests. One of the quickest ways

to build friendships is through common interests. Encourage your child to join a club or sports group where he or she can meet other kids with similar interests. Sometimes finding reasons to talk with other children is the most difficult step to making new friends. Sharing a common interest removes this barrier.

Teach proper manners. Children who are polite, well-

mannered and know how to follow direction are better equipped to attract friends. Other children and their parents, who do not want the hassle of an unruly youngster coming over to play, may shun misbehaved kids. Respectful children who are honest, trustworthy, and capable of sustaining eye contact and making small talk may find it easy to make friends.

Take the friendship lead. As parents, you can improve

your child's chances of making friends by getting friendly with their classmates' parents. You do not have to become bosom buddies with everyone, but making connections with fellow parents can reinforce the value of friendship to your children. Socializing as families also presents other opportunities to get together and solidify relationships.

Boost confidence levels. As a parent, you can talk to your children about their strengths and positive attributes. Emphasizing children’s best traits will increase their selfesteem, and that sense of self-worth can make it easier for them to make friends.

Family, Kids & Relationships

BE PRESENT

Valentine's Day Crafts & Activities for Kids Although Valentine's Day may be geared toward adults, children are quite drawn to the celebration as well. Some couples opt to leave children in the capable hands of a babysitter come Valentine's Day and enjoy the evening solo. For those who want to include youngsters in their fun, they can explore the many enjoyable clever crafts and other activities available.

Learning games Valentine's Day can be turned into a learning opportunity for children. One idea is to create an "Attracting Love" game that illustrates the power of magnets and the laws of attraction. Fill an empty glass jar with various items made into heart shapes. These can include small pieces of pipe cleaner, paper clips, paper, and even aluminum foil hearts. Put the top on the jar and shake up the contents. Let children guess, which items will be attracted to a magnet, then have them, test their theory with a strong magnet rubbed on the outside of the jar. See which hearts are attracted to the magnet. Other learning games can include matching or finding the differences between pictures, counting paper hearts or making recipes of scented modeling dough.

Dessert fun Invite youngsters into the kitchen to try their hands at different recipes, making sure that they have a chance to sample their handiwork afterward.

Crafts Children can have fun cutting out cupids, making coloring pages or doing just about any other Valentine-inspired craft, like making their own cards. Another craft idea is to write secret love notes with invisible ink. Lemon juice can be used as invisible ink. Have children write a message by dipping a cotton swab or their finger in lemon juice and then writing words on a white piece of paper. Once the papers have dried, an adult can reveal the message by placing the paper in front of a heat source, such as an iron or a light bulb. The message will magically appear and reveal those secret sentiments. Children can get crafty by making gifts for the special people in their lives. Combine the concept of valentines with the ambiance of a candle. For an even safer alternative, opt for an LED-flame candle instead of traditional candles. 46 February 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

Valentine's Day is just around the corner and the holiday presents many opportunities for children to share in the fun and festivities. Kids can glue foam conversation hearts, sold at many craft stores, to the outside of the candle. Wrap the middle of the candle with ribbon, and they've just created an easy, heartfelt gift.

Kids' dinner Encourage the next generation of chefs to create culinary masterpieces, which they can then serve to family members or friends. Children can even prepare dinner as a token of appreciation to their parents. Plan recipes with kids, but look for age-appropriate menu ideas, particularly those that will not require much use of the stovetop or other dangerous kitchen appliances. Kids can always do the prep work and then ask an adult to put the food into the oven for cooking. One easy idea is to create Valentine-colored mashed potatoes. Use red potatoes with the skin on to create the potato mash.

Why You Need a Wedding Planner By MS

Planning a wedding is often both fun and frustrating. While planning a party for friends and family can be fun, couples can easily be overwhelmed by the details of planning such a significant event. Interviewing vendors, negotiating prices and arranging for accommodations are just a few of the many tasks couples must complete before they can finally relax and tie the knot. The following are some reasons couples might want to ease their burdens and hire wedding planners, as they get ready for their big day.

Familiar with vendors. Wedding planners work for couples, and while planners often recommend certain vendors, they typically work with whomever the couples ultimately choose. As a result, veteran wedding planners tend to have worked with every florist, caterer, DJ and venue in their areas. That makes them an invaluable resource to couples who don't know where to begin as they start planning their weddings. Wedding planners can save couples time by suggesting couples avoid certain vendors, whether it's because those vendors have poor service records or they simply don't fit into a couple's budget. Wedding planners also can make recommendations based on what couples want. For example, wedding planners may know which DJ are best for receptions that are more raucous and those best suited for couples who want a more formal affair.

Pricing. Wedding vendors often leave room for negotiation when making proposals to prospective customers. Seasoned wedding planners will know the going rates for various services, helping couples get the best rates possible and doing so with minimal effort. In addition, planners might be able to negotiate directly with vendors they have worked with in the past, removing one of the biggest stressors of planning a wedding, the negotiation process, from the list of responsibilities couples must handle before tying the knot.

Remember the small details. Many couples who have large weddings are getting married for the first time, and there are bound to be details they overlook along the way. Seasoned wedding planners are far less likely to overlook even the tiniest of details, helping couples rest knowing that no stone has gone unturned as their big days draw closer and closer.

Keep you on course. The longer a couple's engagement, the easier it becomes to put certain decisions off. But as the wedding day draws nearer that procrastination often turns into panic, as couples realize their options dwindling and decisions need to be made as soon as possible. Wedding planners hired shortly after a couple gets engaged will be there to ensure couples stay on track, making decisions as needed and not putting important decisions off until the last minute. Make the wedding day less stressful. Despite all the planning and preparation that goes into their weddings, couples often find their wedding days to be whirlwind days that seem to fly by. Small problems on a couple's wedding day have a tendency to be magnified, but a seasoned wedding planner can address such issues before the couples are even aware they existed. This makes the day much more enjoyable for the bride and groom and their investment in a wedding planner that much more worthwhile. azhealthandliving.com | February 2015

PLAN & SAVE

career, business & Finance By Andrew Sobel and Jerold Panas, co-authors of Power Questions: Build Relationships, Win New Business, and Influence Others

Nine Ways Power Questions Help Business Relationships Just a few years ago, globalization was in full swing, and the world seemed to be bursting with an infinite supply of business. All this bounty lulled us into taking our customers for granted,—until the economy tanked and shattered the illusion of endless prosperity. Suddenly, the old-fashioned “trusted relationship” started to look good again. In today’s markets, the most valuable commodity is the ability to connect with others and rapidly build trust — and that begins by asking the right questions. Here are nine ways questions can transform professional and personal relationships:

Questions turn one-dimensional, arms-length business relationships into personal relationships that endure for years. When a relationship is all

business and there is no real personal connection, it lacks heart and soul. Therefore you are a commodity—a kind of fungible expert-for-hire. A client—or your boss—can trade you out for a new model with no remorse or emotion. However, when you’ve connected personally, the situation is transformed because clients stick with people they like. Your expertise and competence get you in the door, but it’s the personal connection that then builds deep loyalty.

They make the conversation about the other person—not about them. The need to be heard is one

of the most powerful motivating forces in human nature. When you make the conversation all about you, others may think you are clever. But you will not build their trust. You will not learn about them. You will squander the opportunity to build the foundations for a rich, longterm relationship.

They cut through the “blah, blah, blah” and create conversations that are more authentic. A person says, “I want to bounce something off you.” Then, he proceeds to spend 10 minutes telling you every detail of a very convoluted situation he is enmeshed in. You do yourself and the other person a favor by getting him to focus on the true kernel of his issue. Simply ask, “What is your question?”

This is a tough-love question. People will resist it—

often strenuously. But you must ask it. It forces them to take the first step toward clarifying what the issue is and 48

February 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

what advice they really need from you. You’ll reduce the amount of posturing people do and will move faster toward an authentic conversation.

They help people clarify their thinking and “get out of the cave.” The ancient Greek philosopher

Socrates said that we perceive reality as if we are chained inside a dark cave. In that cave, we see only the blurred shadows of life outside the cave as they are projected on a dark wall at the back. Our understanding of reality is filtered and distorted. By asking a series of questions, Socrates would engage his students’ minds in the learning process. In this way, he uncovered assumptions and slowly but surely got to the heart of the issue. The “Socratic Method” is still used at Harvard Business School—and it can enable you to help others see the true reality instead of shadowy representations of it. Instead of saying, “We need to improve our customer service!” Ask, “How would you assess our customer service levels today?” or, “How is our service impacting our customer retention?”

They help you zero in on what matters most to the other person. The next time you talk to someone and

realize you’ve “lost” her—she’s fidgeting, she’s stopped asking questions; maybe she’s sneaking glances at the clock—ask this question: “What is the most important thing we should be discussing today?” You will instantly connect with what really matters to her—and the conversation that ensues will help her see you as relevant and valuable. When time is spent together on issues that are truly important to both parties, the relationship deepens and grows.

They help others tap into their essential passion for their work. One of the highest-impact power questions you

can ask is, ‘Why do you do what you do?’ It grabs people by the heart and motivates them. When they seriously consider and answer this question, the room will light up with passion.

They inspire people to work at a higher level. The late Steve Jobs was notorious for pushing employees. He asked people constantly, ‘Is this the best you can do?’ A question infused Apple’s corporate culture from the beginning. It’s one that helped revolutionize the desktop computing, music and cellular phone industries. Often, we settle for mediocrity when we need to do our best. Mediocrity is the enemy of greatness. Asking, ‘Is this the best you can do?’ helps others achieve things they did not believe possible.

They can save you from making a fool of yourself.

Before responding to a request or answering someone’s question to you, it’s often wise to get more information about what the other person really wants. When a potential employer says, “Tell me about yourself,” you can bore them to tears by rambling on and on about your life—or you could respond by asking, “What would you like to know about me?” When a prospect asks, “Can you tell me about your firm?” the same dynamic applies. Most people go on and on about their company, but the client is usually interested in one particular aspect of your business. Asking a clarifying question can save you huge embarrassment.

They can salvage a disastrous conversation.

Interactions get off on the wrong foot, and someone gets angry or offended or just shuts down. But people are forgiving. They want to have a great conversation with you. Asking, ‘Do you mind if we start over?’ will disarm the other person and make him smile. That smile will ease the way to a new beginning. All business interactions are human interactions. Part of being human is acknowledging that you don’t know everything about everything—and that you certainly don’t know everything about the other person and her needs. Questions help you understand these things more deeply. azhealthandliving.com |February 2015

STAY ACTIVE & FIT

FITNESS, NUTRITION & SPORTS By Jen Joas, founder of UrbanHalo, marathon running expert and mom

Mistakes to Avoid When Training for Your Next Race As you’re training for your next marathon, keep these tips in mind to conquer your goal and sprint past the finish line with a smile on your face!

Lack of proper running attire One common mistake runners make is overdressing or underdressing. On average, our bodies warm up 15-20 degrees while running, so you have to combine that to the outdoor temperature and dress accordingly. As a general rule, you should avoid wearing cotton while running. Aside from putting you at a greater risk for chafing, cotton stays wet when it becomes soaked with sweat, clinging to your skin and making you uncomfortable in both warm and cool weather. Stick to clothes made of technical fabrics with flat seams, as this attire will wick the sweat away from your body, keeping you dry and reducing the chance of chafing.

Giving up too quickly Many of us become inspired to pick up running, only to give up after a short time because frankly, asking your mind and body to try something new can be difficult! Preparing your body for running takes time. Start with a run/walk training program, like the Couch to 5K program. Stick to it and then sign yourself up for a fun race to celebrate the goals that you achieved. Find a buddy to run with, as running at a conversational pace will also prevent burnout, and having a partner is motivating! Set your phone on a playlist that gets your blood pumping and feet racing. Run outside whenever possible and change up your routes for variety.

Wearing the wrong shoes This may be the biggest mistake runners make. You shouldn’t pick your shoes based on the cutest colors or designs! The stride and shape of our feet are as unique as our personalities, and having the right shoe is key to keeping your limbs injury-free. Head into a local running specialty store to be evaluated and fitted for the proper shoe. Your shoes should also be replaced every 300-500 miles to maintain proper cushioning and support. 50 February 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

Overtraining If you are just starting, out or training for your 20th race, too much is never a good idea. A common mistake made, whether it is race day or you’re out on a training run, is to start out too fast. Keep in mind that you’ll almost always feel better during your first mile than your last. If you begin running too quickly, you may face burnout before reaching your goal. Start out a bit slower than your goal pace for the first mile and gradually increase your speed. If you are just starting out and unsure of what your goal pace should be, run at a speed that would allow you to carry on a conversation.

Increase your overall distance too quickly To prevent injuries, don't let your weekly mileage increase by more than 10 percent from one week to the next. Finally, to improve, your body needs time to recover. Always give yourself a day of rest after a long run and when you experience pain during a run.

Race day experimentation Race day will always be filled with unknown variables, such as the weather. New gear, pre-race food, or supplements should not be one of them. If you haven’t tried it before the race, don’t try it then…no matter how much that running expert friend of yours raves about the success they’ve had! What works for one doesn’t always work for another.

Keira Knightley

Keira Knightley, 29-year-old English drama queen has earned her golden star in Hollywood with her gutsy acting skills. Her relationship with the silver screen developed at an early age. Knightley’s outstanding performance in the film Bend it Like Beckham helped her achieve international fame; soon after, her journey as a star picked up pace. In the 2008 list, Forbes magazine labeled Knightley as one of the highest paid actors. Not only that, Knightley has earned a series of accolades for her drama driven roles in Pirates of the Caribbean films, Joe Wright's 2005 adaptation of Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice and she was recently nominated to win an Oscar in the category of best supporting role for her work in The Imitation Game.

Speaking of awards, Knightley has stood out at prestigious red carpets displaying her unique sense of style. Fashion police, however, doesn’t show mercy to anyone, and so, Knightley wasn’t spared either for her butterfly-infused dress that she wore at this year’s Golden Globes. In her defense, many fashion divas spoke out regarding Knightley’s priority toward being comfortable at these flashy events as she’s newly pregnant with her husband James Righton. Nonetheless, it’s easy for all to agree that this mum-to-be is looking as chic and radiant as ever. So what’s her style mantra while being pregnant? “It’s quite fun because you suddenly go, ‘Well my body’s not my own so I’m just going to have fun with things,’” Knightley shares with USA Today. Expecting mothers need to take extra precautions as they take care of themselves and the child they’re bring into the world. Knightley is already 52 February 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

protective and an evidence of that surfaced when the actress decided to drink apple juice instead of Champagne to celebrate her second Oscar nomination. “I tried sparkling apple juice because it looked kind of like Champagne in the glass,” she says at the Critics' Choice Awards at the Hollywood Palladium. According to Express.Co.UK, Knightley felt good about her decision to be sober. “Good, sober. But good. It's doing a red carpet without a glass of Champagne before is a sobering experience really. There you go.” Having children can bring all sorts of changes in one’s life. Priorities shift and the balancing act begins, but Knightley fans, don’t worry. This starlet isn’t going to give up her acting profession any time soon. According to reports on TheIndyChannel.com, Knightley is hoping to take the title role in a stage adaptation of Emile Zola's novel Therese Raquin, about an unhappily married woman who embarks on an affair, after her delivery in the summer. “There's no change as far as I know. The performance might even be better because after the baby I'll probably be moody and cry a lot and some of that's perfect for the part…” Knightley confidently admitted to TheIndyChannel.com. Aside from maintaining an elegant persona at the award functions, her current struggle also includes staying awake. “I’m pregnant. You can sleep anywhere. It’s very easy. I sit down and fall asleep. The problem is staying awake, really,” Knightley, laughed as she confessed this to USA Today. In fact, when her husband Righton awakened her when the Oscar nomination call rang, she did just that. “I was asleep in bed and my husband picked up the phone. I didn’t realize it was all happening so early. I thought somebody had died,” she says on the red carpet to USA Today while adding casually that after the call she went right back to sleep. Mothers around the world, feel free to relate with this adorable actress. azhealthandliving.com | February 2015

BE A GOOD STEWARD

The Relationship Between Paint & Mood Painting is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to transform the look of a space. The colors homeowners choose for their walls can give rooms their own unique feel and even affect the moods of the people within them. Finding the right shade for a bedroom or kitchen involves more than just selecting the first color that catches your eye. Design experts and psychologists alike say it may be worthwhile to choose a color that helps you feel good rather than just following design trends. The paint color you pick may add energy to a space or create a tranquil retreat where you can unwind at the end of the day.

Blue To create a spa-like environment and a more serene space, look to shades of blue in soft variations. Cool blues are soothing colors that can help lower stress levels and promote sleep. That's why blue is a frequent fixture in bedrooms and bathrooms. Just be advised that too much blue can make a room appear cold and stark, so balance out blue with some warmer accents.

Orange Many people do not immediately consider bright orange for their homes, but when used as an accent shade, orange can really brighten up a home. Orange is considered a shade that expands creativity and imparts a youthful appeal to a space. Consider an orange accent wall or a burst of color with orange throw pillows. If pumpkin orange is a little too bold for you, tone it down by choosing a more pastel, peachy hue, which is equally warm and energizing.

Red Red stimulates energy and appetite, which is why the shade is so popular in restaurants and home dining spaces. Red is a good choice for social gathering rooms but may not be the wisest choice for a bedroom, as the color may prove over stimulating. 56

February 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

Green Green can evoke composure, tranquility, and works in any room of the house. Since green is the primary color of nature, it also works well for those people who want to bring some of the outdoors inside and work with the fresh starts and new growth that green can inspire. To make green feel less subdued and sleepy, work with its complementary opposite, red, by using a few bold red accents here and there to balance out the tranquility of green.

Purple People have long related purple to royalty, and this dramatic color can add a formal, regal aspect to a home depending on the hue. Purple also may help stimulate the creative side of the brain. In paler shades of lavender, purple can seem almost ethereal and spiritual. Some designers suggest avoiding purple in a bedroom because that is a place, you want your brain to rest rather than be stimulated.

Yellow Few colors are more vibrant than yellow, which can help stimulate conversation and make thoughts more focused. A luminous shade of yellow is an ideal way to make any space more welcoming and bright. Just use it sparingly, as too much yellow may not be a good thing. Yellow accents mixed with touches of purple can offer the balance needed to prevent yellow rooms from overwhelming residents and guests. Home decorators should keep in mind that colors could be blended to create the desired environment. A color scheme based on complementary colors, or those opposite on the color wheel, may fit. Otherwise, analogous color schemes, or those colors that are next to one another on the color wheel, can create a variation that suits your design needs.

STAY HEALTHY

By Deborah Downey, dating/life coach, and author of What Are You Worried About!

Tips for Older Singles Dating in the Age of the Selfie All the good ones are taken … I’m too old to feel that way again … I don’t look as good as I used to … I haven’t accomplished enough at my age … I don’t even know how to flirt anymore … For older singles hungry for partnership, these common worries can prevent taking the steps that lead to fulfilling relationships. Of course, the dating scene has changed quite a bit in the past decade alone; younger people meet online and wallpaper their profiles with selfies. Although the selfie is now widely accepted, there are some older singles who are intimidated by what it seems to signify: that we’ve gone from the Age of Aquarius to an age of vanity and superficiality. It’s one thing to be self-actualized and self-enriched; it’s another to be self-absorbed. For older singles looking to date – and more, there’s plenty to feel optimistic about. There are more singles than ever age 40 and older that are looking for love. Here are four tips for the older single looking for a meaningful and lasting connection.

Ignore ego-based doubts. It’s easy to idealize memories of dating when you were younger, perhaps in better shape and more energetic. But most likely, your younger self was also scared of not being good enough and was probably not as self-actualized as who you are today. Don’t fall for the ego doubts of your youth; embrace your maturity, part of which includes accepting who you are in any situation. If that is difficult, consider this period in your life as an opportunity to improve self-acceptance.

Know your target and have fun! Dating takes time and effort so don’t go into it blind. You may want to specify your preferences, such as non-smoker or financially independent or health conscious. Once on your date, remember that you’re supposed to be having fun, nerves notwithstanding. The best way to gauge whether the date is going well is to take note of whether you’re actually enjoying yourself. 60

February 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

Internet dating is legit. The stigma against meeting dates online has all but lifted. You’ll want to represent yourself fairly and accurately in a profile. Don’t go blank and write an overly simple profile; tell a good, positive story about a small victory during childhood or talk about your bucket list. Forget about clichés like wine tastings or hobbies, avoid poor spelling, and make sure your photo is current. Don’t try to be “cool” or clever; just be real. When meeting someone, use common sense: take it slow, be wary of frauds, and meet in a public place and so on.

Consider the sensibilities of your date. After a few successful dates, remember that men and women share universal sensibilities. Men and women both like to be complimented, admired and appreciated. Everyone wants to feel important. Specifically, men like it when women suggest doing something together that he will like, such as going fishing or to a sporting event. Women generally appreciate being encouraged to express their feelings, and men who share their own feelings.

Understand & Avoid Elder Financial Fraud Elder fraud is a financial crime that targets older men and women who are often unable to recognize they are being victimized. Elder financial fraud is a broad term that can be applied to a host of crimes, from stealing money or property directly from an individual to using an older person's property or possessions without permission. Many seniors are targeted through telemarketing scams in which elders are scared into giving money out of fear of losing their homes, some are exploited by people closer to home who forge signatures or get an older person to sign over deeds or power of attorney. Criminals often see elderly men and women as easy targets. Seniors may be suffering from declining physical and/or mental health, which compromises their ability to defend themselves or even recognize they are being taken advantage of. Seniors also may be embarrassed of being duped and not share their experiences with others as a result. Family members who aim to acquire an elderly relative’s assets can also perpetuate elder fraud. Recognizing scenarios where fraud may be committed can help men and women protect their elderly relatives from being victimized by elder fraud.

Confirm professionals are who they say they are. More than 170 designations and certifications are used within the financial industry to identify professionals. Some of them do not necessarily mean a person is qualified or can be trusted to handle an individual's assets. Always ask a financial adviser if he is overseen by a government agency or is authorized to provide advice under the "fiduciary standard of care." Be especially careful when dealing with advisors who try to push certain products or those who suggest shortcuts and blending services. Such professionals are not necessarily criminals, but they may have ulterior motives in mind and not be overly concerned about you or your loved one's financial well-being. 62

February 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

Pay attention to your accounts. Unusually large withdrawals from automated teller machines or cashed checks with signatures that do not match the signature on the account are both indicative of fraud. If you are monitoring a loved one's accounts, question any surges of activity in accounts that are normally somewhat inactive. Ask a loved one to keep you abreast of changes in their will. Abrupt changes in a will or other financial documents should also cause concern. Family members caring for a senior should be aware of any major changes to important documents. Monitor a loved one's purchases. Sudden purchases, whether it's an updated insurance policy or unnecessary home repairs, may be indicative of elder fraud. Elder financial fraud targets an often-vulnerable segment of the population, and it's often up to loved ones to protect their elderly relatives from being victimized by such crimes.

Historical Scrapbooks Can Honor Older Relatives There are so many different and creative ways for families to showcase their heritage and honor a grandparent or other special senior. Scrapbooks are one such way to share the life of a special person and indirectly tell the tale of your family history. Very often personal history projects are a part of elementary school curricula, so you may already have the makings of a family tree or a family diary in your home. All it takes is a little more research and some planning to design a scrapbook that can be gifted or kept for generations to enjoy. Begin by making an outline of what you would like to cover in the scrapbook. Perhaps there is a specific event in a grandparent's life that is worth highlighting, like a military tour of duty or a brief stint in show business. Maybe you would like to present different snapshots in time during his or her life. Either way, planning the content of the scrapbook will make it easier to gather the necessary elements. Once you've settled on a theme, begin your research by interviewing the eventual recipient (he or she doesn't have to know the reason behind the inquiry). During the interview, take note of key dates and try to establish the mood of the era with supporting materials. For example, you may be able to find samples of advertisements from a correlating period in history or newspaper clippings that can be used to fluff up the content of the book. In the meantime, gather photos that can be used in the scrapbook, which may take some hunting. Prints can be scanned and copied via a desktop scanner at home, or loaded onto a CD or thumb drive and brought to a pharmacy photo kiosk. Some specialty shops can even scan slides or convert stills from film into images. Make sure to make copies of all original prints and be careful not to lose or damage the originals.

Scrapbooks can be made manually with materials purchased anywhere from craft and hobby stores to stationery shops. There are varieties of paper-cutting tools, adhesives, stickers, labels, and stencils that can be used to enhance the look of the scrapbook. There also are computer software programs or online tools through photo-sharing sites that enable you to upload images and text and design photo books entirely online. Then the finished product can be printed out in a variety of finishes. This method may actually be preferable for those who plan to save the scrapbook or anticipate it being such a big hit that others will want their own copies. Create a digital file of all of your information and copies of images. This way if you ever want to add to the scrapbook or reproduce information in the future you will have all of the information readily available. The scrapbook also will serve, as a good source material down the line should future generations want to learn about their ancestors. Scrapbooking is more than just detailing baby's first birthday or a vacation. This popular pastime can help document the life of a special senior. azhealthandliving.com | February 2015

There is a curve called failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called friends, red lights called enemies, caution lights called family. You will have flats called jobs. But, if you have a spare called determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith and a driver named Jesus—you will make it to a place called success.” – Author Unknown
