Get Ready for the Holidays! We can all agree sagging skin is a sure sign of ageing, especially when it’s concentrated around the jaw line, neck, and eyes. But now there is a new generation skin-tightening device leading the way in the fight against sagging jowls, turkey necks, and tired eyes. is a non-surgical treatment designed to lift, tighten and firm the skin of the face and neck. It is drastically different in its tightening and lifting ability because it not only tightens skin, but also the deep muscular layers underneath. The same foundational layers typically addressed in a surgical face-lift. drives sound waves into skin and deeper support structures that tighten existing collagen, and stimulate more collagen growth over the next three to six months. This is the first non-surgical device to combine focused ultrasound energy that visualizes the area to be treated then accurately delivers pinpoint energy to multiple structural layers of collagen. is the first ultrasound technology to receive FDA clearance for a non-surgical brow, jowl, and neck lift. It is used on areas of the face and neck that address sagging of the cheek, jawline, marionette lines, chin as well as brows and eyelids. Single areas may be treated or full face and neck for a more complete lift. A visible lift is commonly seen immediately following the procedure, with optimal results occurring over three to six months. There are no pre or post treatment restrictions. No down time, surgery, incisions, injections or scars, and it’s done in thirty to sixty minutes. Technology is providing amazing ways to safely stay looking young!

elcome to our Family & Give Thanks Issue. Make time to thank God! Stop procrastinating, debating or creating a window for a particular day or hour, because every minute counts! Give “restitution” to God, praise and thank Him in advance for all the blessings coming your way.

Colossians 2:7

The world around us is constantly changing, and although we have to submit to change to produce desired results, we can still hold grounded to what we know is right by God. We must not lose our values and traditions to teach our children, grandchildren and their children’s grandchild (our future generation) – how to live healthier lives! Healthier Lives: The condition of being sound in body, mind – and Spirit! “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Thessalonians 5:23

Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's.

Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

Psalm 103:1-5

1 Timothy 4:4-5

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow!

For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

Psalm 138:1-2

Psalm 107:1

I will praise thee with my whole heart: before the gods will I sing praise unto thee. I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

Psalm 100:1-5 Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

John 1:16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

Psalm 107:8 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

Isaiah 12:4-5 And in that day shall ye say, Praise the Lord, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted. Sing unto the Lord; for he hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth. Until next time, Wishing you & your families a blessed, healthy & safe Thanksgiving!

The Arizona Fall League Brings Tomorrow’s Baseball Stars to Northeast Valley Did you know the next Aroldis Chapman, Bryce Harper, Andrew McCutchen, Dustin Pedroia, Giancarlo Stanton or Mike Trout might be playing baseball in your own backyard this fall? Throughout October and November, Salt River Fields and Scottsdale Stadium in Scottsdale will be home to the Salt River Rafters and Scottsdale Scorpions, respectively, two of six Arizona Fall League (AFL) teams comprised by many of Major League Baseball’s (MLB) elite young prospects — some of whom hail from right here in the Valley! “The Arizona Fall League is regarded throughout professional baseball as the finishing school for top prospects,” league director Steve Cobb explains. “It features top prospects from every organization in Major League Baseball.” The AFL’s role in baseball’s development process goes beyond players. The league has helped future major league managers, coaches, umpires and front office administrators and executives reach the big leagues. For instance, this past July, 36 ex-AFL players and four umpires were selected to participate in MLB’s All-Star Game plus 10 former players in the Futures Game and six of 10 participants in the Home Run Derby. Fans certainly are not forgotten, either.

“We also are proud to offer an affordable alternative for fans and families to enjoy professional baseball played at the highest level by an assortment of minor league all-stars and first-round draft choices who are headed to the major leagues,” Cobb says. Approximately 60 percent of players selected for the Fall League reach the major leagues. The Arizona Fall League remains among the most affordable outdoor activities in the Northeast Valley this fall. “Both day and night games are only $8 for adults and $6 for children or seniors — and you can sit wherever you like. Season passes are similarly wallet-friendly at just $85 for adults and $75 for children or seniors,” Cobb says, noting that all 30 MLB teams are represented on the AFL’s six teams with at least seven players. The Rafters will be stocked with prospects from the hometown Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Houston Astros, Miami Marlins and Minnesota Twins. The Scorpions that boasted current MLB stars Harper and Trout on its 2011 roster and Pedroia, a former ASU star, a few years earlier, will include prospects from the New York Mets, New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants in 2014. The Rafters and Scorpions play each of the four other teams whose rosters are filled by players from the other 20 MLB organizations.

This year, visitors to Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park will have an up close and underwater view of our California Sea Lions — the only marine mammals in Arizona--thanks to an all-new outdoor pool complete with large acrylic view panels. Joining our pair of females is a young male named Crockett. Younger than the females, he is already larger than either! Sea Lions are dimorphic since males grow to be much larger than females. PITCH 4 KIDZ Giving Children a Voice Beautiful gifts can be borne from tragedy, and Stacy Beck, co-founder of PITCH 4 KIDZ, has proved this true! Beck’s family was devastated by the loss of her husband, Rod Beck, a former pitcher with the San Francisco Giants to the disease of addiction, in 2007. However, her dedication to breaking the stigma and cycles of the disease manifested into PITCH 4 KIDZ, a nonprofit organization that provides positive interventions targeting communication and healing for children; striving to impart messages of strength and hope to families facing the disease of addiction. Through PITCH 4 KIDZ, Beck and her team have helped hundreds of children find their voice in an environment so often shrouded in secrecy and shame. “I saw how it impacted my children and knew how crucial it was for me to help my kids find hope and gain understanding of what had happened to their father,” Beck says. “I really put my heart and soul into it.” The help she received for herself and her children in another state lay the foundation for creating her own program for children ages 6-12. Recognizing that addiction affects every family member, PITCH 4 KIDZ was designed to help children and families to gain communication and coping skills. “I drew from my experiences and what I had learned through my education and training, to help other families who might be facing similar situations,” Beck says. Today, Beck is a Licensed Associate Counselor and the Executive Director of PITCH 4 KIDZ. She believes that

children deserve opportunities to express their feelings and experiences, while learning positive coping skills that can be used throughout their lives. “When a parent abuses drugs or alcohol, the entire family is impacted,” Beck says. “The children in these families are directly impacted by the confusion, chaos, dysfunction and instability characteristic of the disease and that is where we step in.” A program of Hope Network, PITCH 4 KIDZ is designed to offer age-appropriate support and education to children and families. The goal is to bring the children actively into the recovery process to learn that despite their parent’s addiction, they can become healthy and successful adults. The programs include psycho-educational concepts designed for resilience building and trauma prevention. All staff members are oriented to SAMHSA’s Children’s Program Kit Curriculum, and trained in PITCH 4 KIDZ interventions and protocols.

In addition, PITCH 4 KIDZ programming encompasses five focal areas to address resilience building in response to trauma: knowledge, feelings (identification and expression), safety, coping skills and problem-solving. The program is designed to build resilience in children by learning about addiction and separating their loved one from the disease. They learn how to identify and express emotions, identify safe people they can talk to, increase coping skills and problem-solve. “The group dynamic creates a safe environment for sharing feelings and learning new coping skills,” Beck says. “And most importantly, children learn in this group process that they are not alone.” By learning these skills, fostering honest communication and building a support system, shameful feelings are reduced and children are empowered — and the best part is – these life skills are introduced in a fun, child-friendly, and developmentally appropriate way through art, games, role-play, music, movies and literature.

“One in four children in the U.S. is affected by a parent’s alcohol abuse,” Beck says. “Through our program children build resilience that can last a lifetime. I believe we can and do truly make a difference, and that’s what keeps us going here at PITCH4KIDZ.”

PREVENT

By Nataly Rubinstein, licensed clinical social worker, geriatric care manager and author of Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias: The Caregiver’s Complete Survival Guide

Alzheimer’s Behaviors & Solutions Being a caregiver for someone with any form of dementia will change your life, whether you live with the patient or not. Above all, keep in mind that a person with memory problems needs to feel safe and secure, so do everything possible to prevent them from feeling threatened or humiliated.

No doubt about it: when someone you love is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or some other cause of dementia, it’s a crushing blow. Not only must you face the fact that your loved one has a degenerative (and ultimately fatal) condition, you also have to deal with a plethora of increasingly strange behaviors.

Compulsive Behaviors. The patient knows he or she

If you feel confused, worried, frustrated, or even angry about the bewildering behaviors exhibited by your family member, congratulations – you are normal. Now, it’s time to come to terms with a hard truth: the real source of your negative reaction is not necessarily the patient. It’s you.

Solutions. First, ignore the behavior; giving cease-and-

One big reason these behaviors are ‘unwanted’ is that they disrupt your life. Sure, many behaviors are unhealthy and dangerous for you and your loved one. However, other times, it’s not the actual behavior that’s causing so much trouble—it’s our reaction to it; based on the mindset we’ve locked ourselves into.

Repeating. As the illness progresses, patients live increasingly

We believe that the way we think things should be is the only way (or at least the only right way). Thus, we limit our own options when it comes to dealing with the patient. What’s more, we don’t want our relationship with the person to change — and these behaviors are 24/7 evidence that it has changed — dramatically and forever.

listen to the same story repeatedly. This can prevent much more serious episodes of agitation, confusion or aggression. Also, keep your conversation as simple and direct as possible in order to avoid miscommunications that might spark confusion and repetitive questions.

have something important to remember but has forgotten what it was—and this causes repetitive behaviors. The “big four in anxiety” are the basics for all of us: food, shelter, clothing and family, and it’s not surprising that many compulsive behaviors revolve around these issues.

desist advice to your loved one will only spark stress and arguments. Speak in a calm, gentle voice, and don’t be afraid to touch or hug. Remember, the person is seeking reassurance. “in the moment,” and they lose the ability to think and process information, and repetition — whether it’s asking a question, stating a fact or telling a story — is comforting.

Solutions. Be patient, and answer the same question or

Toileting Problems. It’s common for Alzheimer’s patients to struggle with incontinence. Sometimes they simply don’t realize they need to use the bathroom, can’t make it there in time, or have forgotten the location or purpose. Patients will often offer alternative explanations as to why, for instance, the bed or couch is wet—such as spilled drinks or leaky roofs.

Solutions. It’s OK to feel extremely reluctant to take on this particular cleaning task. The first step is to make a doctor’s appointment to ensure that another medical condition or medication isn’t the cause. Establish a regular bathroom routine and encourage the patient to go instead of asking if they need to. You may also find it helpful to place signs indicating where the bathroom is, make the toilet seat a different color or provide clothes without complicated zippers or buttons. Don’t beat yourself up if you feel too overwhelmed, it might be better for all involved to call in outside help. Refusal to Bathe. Some patients actually believe that they have bathed recently; others may have forgotten the steps it takes, think that there’s no need to bathe if they haven’t perspired, be afraid of water or showers, or not want to ruin a hairdo.

Solutions. If appropriate, try to reason with your loved one by telling them that you’ll have visitors or must go to a doctor’s appointment and that you know they want to look their best. Above all, keep in mind that a person with memory problems needs to feel safe and secure, so do everything possible to prevent them from feeling threatened or humiliated in this intimate setting. Wandering. When people wander, it’s usually because they’re looking for a safe or comfortable place. Your loved one might be seeking a bathroom, a person or place from his past, or relief from boredom or pain. When they’re seeking something in particular, they can be very adept at slipping away—even if they’re wheelchair bound! Solutions. You can buy your loved one a Safe Return necklace or bracelet through the Alzheimer’s Association, change locks or install a security system. Making your loved one feel secure is paramount, so don’t call attention to any changes you may make in the living environment. Paranoia. Paranoia boils down to fear – and people who are suffering from memory loss have a lot to be afraid of. As time goes on, Alzheimer’s patients lose the ability to recognize their homes, friends, family, and even their own reflections in the mirror. In the midst of this unfamiliarity, they will struggle to make some sense of their situations, and they can hold on to the ideas they form for quite some time. Even though your loved one’s belief that you’re trying to steal her jewelry may seem irrational to you, it’s nothing short of reality to her.

Solutions. The best things you can do are to remember that your loved one isn’t trying to hurt you, and to try not to take things personally. Know beforehand that rational explanations and clarifications probably won’t work, so don’t pin your hopes of returning to “normal” on them. Aggression and Violence. Since Alzheimer’s and dementia cause the brain’s pathways to work differently, communication doesn’t work the way it used to. Things that seem normal to the caregiver may seem threatening to the patient, thus sparking belligerence, arguments or even combativeness. Solutions. An educated caregiver is often the best medicine of all for patients who are aggressive. Your behavior can either fuel the fire or help extinguish the flames. It’s important to not to take aggression personally, remain calm and reassuring, and to approach reality as your loved one sees it. If you feel that, you’re in danger or can’t handle the situation, though, leave the room, get to a phone, and call for support. azhealthandliving.com | November 2014

The Relationship Between Obesity & Type 2 Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease that makes it difficult for the body to manage its blood-glucose levels. Diabetes is broken down into two types: type 1 diabetes, which occurs when the pancreas cannot adequately produce enough insulin to regulate blood sugar; and type 2 diabetes, occurs when the body either resists the effects of insulin or does not produce enough to maintain a normal blood sugar level. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports type 2 diabetes has been occurring with increasing frequency among American children and adolescents over the past 20 years. The Mayo Clinic says 90 percent of diabetes cases are type 2, and 80 percent of these people are overweight. Being overweight or obese is a significant risk factor for type 2 diabetes, but many people do not know why. There is some evidence that fat cells are more resistant to insulin than muscle cells. In addition, being overweight taxes the body in other ways and can put more pressure on the body's ability to properly control blood sugar and use insulin. Carbohydrate-rich diets full of simple sugars and refined foods can cause unhealthy spikes in blood-glucose readings. Individuals who overeat and lead sedentary lifestyles may not burn enough energy, and excess calories are then stored as fat, compounding the problem. 28

Carbohydrate-rich diets full of simple sugars and refined foods can cause unhealthy spikes in blood-glucose readings. Individuals who overeat and lead sedentary lifestyles may not burn enough energy, and excess calories are then stored as fat, compounding the problem. The Obesity Society says type 2 diabetes is largely preventable, and research shows that lifestyle changes that include small amounts of weight loss (between 5 and 10 percent of body weight) can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. In fact, managing weight is the best thing a person can do to reduce their risk for diabetes. Losing as few as 10 pounds can markedly improve insulin resistance and make it much easier to manage blood sugar levels. In addition to losing weight, eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly can reduce a person's risk of developing diabetes. Lean proteins, leafy green vegetables, and complex carbohydrates will not spike blood sugar levels. Exercise helps burn calories and boost metabolism, and may even help the body use insulin more effectively. Type 2 diabetes can be a chronic, debilitating condition that leads to other illnesses. However, type 2 diabetes is largely preventable, and losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight are great ways to lower your risk of diabetes.

The Danger of Smoking While Driving

Using a cellphone, texting and drinking alcoholic beverages are all activities that can lead to fines or arrest if done while in a moving vehicle. However, in some areas, it is already illegal or may soon be, to smoke in a vehicle if in the presence of children. Since 2006, several communities across North America have implemented laws to prevent smoking in cars when children are present, and campaigns for smoke-free car laws are poised to continue. The public has become increasingly aware that there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke, also known as environmental tobacco smoke, includes the smoke that a smoker exhales and the smoke that comes from burning tobacco products. Thousands of toxic chemicals are present in secondhand smoke, including formaldehyde, lead, butane, cyanide and carbon monoxide. These dangerous chemicals can be inhaled and tend to linger in the air for hours or longer. Smoke residue also clings to a smoker's body and hair and can even surface inside of a home or vehicle, according to The Mayo Clinic. Asthma, heart disease, and lung cancer may result from contact with secondhand smoke. When someone smokes within the small enclosed space of a car, passengers are exposed to air that is many times more toxic than what the EPA considers hazardous air quality, even if a window is down. What's more, the particulates of tobacco smoke that are absorbed in the upholstery off-gas back into the air even after many days have passed, exposing riders to toxins well beyond when someone smoked in the car. The developing bodies of children and their small stature put youngsters at risk for greater complications from cigarette smoke, although any passenger is at risk. Laws vary depending on location and typically apply to children ages 16 and under. Smokers are urged to quit smoking for their health and the health of others. However, those who continue to smoke should refrain from smoking when inside a vehicle, especially when children are present. azhealthandliving.com |November 2014

CONNECT WITHIN

MIND, BODY & spirit By Dr. Walter St. John, retired college professor and author of Solace: How Caregivers and Others Can Relate, Listen, and Respond Effectively to a Chronically Ill Person

Methods to Help Caregivers Cope with Stress Being a caregiver for someone with a serious illness or chronic condition isn’t easy. There is a multitude of demands on your time, energy, and resources. Between doctors’ appointments, dispensing medication, helping the ill person complete daily tasks, managing the ill person’s household, providing meals, and more, it’s all too easy to feel overburdened, overstressed, and overwhelmed. Even when the ill person is someone whom you love deeply, such as a spouse or parent, being a caregiver puts you under a tremendous amount of mental, emotional, and often physical stress. It’s very important for you to be aware of what your mind, body, emotions are telling you, and to have coping mechanisms in place to help you manage stress and maintain your sanity while still meeting the needs of the ill person. Here are ten healthy ways for caregivers to cope with stress.

Have realistic expectations for yourself. Know your mental and physical limits, and be aware of your personal limitations regarding your availability to care for the ill person. Setting healthy boundaries is best for you and for your ill loved one. Explain your time and availability limitations to the person for whom you are caring in order to avoid misunderstandings.

Obtain advice on caregiving from experienced caregivers. There are many sources of help and guidance including but are certainly not limited to: friends or relatives who have acted as caregivers, social workers specializing in caregiving and support groups. It’s much better to learn various coping techniques in advance from experienced caregivers, rather than learning them the hard way through trial and error.

Accept that as a caregiver, you need help. One person cannot do it all, especially in an intensive caregiving situation; in fact, you should try to have at least two other people to help you. With that in mind, tell your family and friends what you need and how they can assist you as soon as possible. Remember, there is no shame — and a lot of good sense — in sharing the caregiving duties and responsibilities. 30 November 2014 | azhealthandliving.com

Control the caregiving situation, rather than letting it control you. Even though you have volunteered to take care of someone else’s needs, you are not at the mercy of or under the complete control of the ill person. You have the right and responsibility to make yourself understood; to ensure that your own needs are being met; to protect yourself from excessive stress, physical and mental strain, and even abuse.

Make every effort to still, live your own life. When you allow your entire life to revolve around your ill loved one, your mental health, physical health, relationships, and more can suffer. Do your best to balance your previous life activities and routines with the newer demands of caregiving. Decide what is important and focus on these priorities so that you don’t come to resent your role, and possibly even the ill person.

Insist on some private time each day. No matter how much you may love and enjoy the other person’s company, you need to take a mental vacation or to actually get away to do something you would like to do on a regular basis. Also, realize that it may take a little time to learn to enjoy yourself without feeling guilty.

Keep mentally and physically fit. The truth is you’ll be best equipped for the responsibilities and demands of caregiving if you maintain your mental and physical health.

Learn to say no. If you’re around someone who’s ill, demands will be made of you. It’s crucial to understand that you can’t say yes to everything. When you try to be

everything to everyone, you’ll end up stretching yourself too thin, and perhaps even harming yourself or the ill person.

Encourage the ill person to do as many things for themselves without overdoing it. In all but the most extreme cases, your loved one will still be able to complete some tasks on his or her own. In general, a good attitude to have is, “I’m willing to help you as little or as much as you want me to, but I won’t do things for you that you prefer to do for yourself.”

Know ahead of time what to say or do when your patience becomes exhausted. Some days you may become frustrated because the ill person is angry and rude; other days, the constant demands of caregiving might weigh heavily enough that you reach the end of your rope. On such occasions, do what is necessary to remain cool and collected, even if you have to pause for a few seconds or leave the room. You can’t always control the ill person’s behavior, but you can control your own response.

Q. I have diabetes. Why does my family doctor advise me to have my eyes checked at least yearly? A. Diabetes can have both temporary as well as permanent effects on the eyes. If the level of your blood sugars fluctuates significantly, sugar actually enters into the eye’s natural crystalline lenses and affects focusing. Your eyes will focus differently with a very high blood sugar as opposed to a low one, and this fluctuating vision will vary with the level of your sugars. More importantly, diabetes can have more, significant long-lasting effects on the eye. Individuals with diabetes are more prone to develop cataracts, probably because of these blood sugar fluctuations. Once diagnosed, cataracts can be successfully treated and vision can be restored so well with the newest generation of specialized implants that you might have excellent vision afterward without the burden of glasses! Once the cataracts are removed, fluctuating blood sugars will not affect the focusing of your eyes. The other significant effect of diabetes is diabetic retinopathy. This condition shows up early as dilated retinal blood vessels (microaneurysms), and if left untreated can expand, break, cause retinal hemorrhages and ultimately loss of vision that is difficult to restore. If, however, these are diagnosed early through a yearly exam with an ophthalmologist, these small vessels can be treated and sealed off with laser treatments, thus helping to prevent future loss of vision.

Q. How does diabetic eye disease affect

A. In dentistry today, composite or toothcolored fillings, are the latest technology. They are different from the older amalgam or silver fillings in that the composite fillings are resin based and made of ceramic and plastic compounds, whereas the amalgam fillings composed of a combination of mercury, silver, tin and copper. The resins allow the fillings to mimic the natural tooth color, making them more aesthetically appealing to most patients. These composite fillings have been long used in dentistry on the front teeth, but until recently, were not strong enough for the back teeth.

current silver fillings in my mouth?

The major concern with the silver amalgam filling is the mercury component, which makes up 50 percent of the filling. However, mercury’s chemical nature changes when it mixes with the other metal agents, making it harmless. Even the small amount of mercury released from chewing isn’t enough to cause concern. Composite fillings do have other benefits over amalgam. One of the biggest advantages is that the composite filling does not contract and expand to temperature changes like the amalgam fillings do, making them far less sensitive. Composite fillings also bind better with the natural tooth, reducing leaking and the recurrence of decay. Despite the advantages of composite fillings, we typically recommend replacing the amalgam fillings only when it is medically necessary, such as when the amalgam is no longer sealed in the tooth correctly. When this happens, decay can begin forming.

of blindness among working-age Americans. Diabetes-related eye disease can cause numerous symptoms, including fluctuating vision, floaters, development of a blind spot in your field of view, blurry vision, double vision and cataracts. The most damaging is diabetic retinopathy in which damage is caused to the retina that can include retinal swelling and leakage of blood and fluids from the blood vessels to the surrounding retina. When light enters the eye, it focuses on the retina, and that information is passed along the optic nerve to the brain where visual processing takes place. It the retina is damaged, as in diabetic retinopathy, then blind spots develop in the field of vision that correlate to the part of the retina that is damaged. It is imperative that those with diabetes have an eye exam at least once a year. If diabetic eye disease is present, it is common to have examinations several times a year. While diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of vision loss in America, many cases could be prevented with routine eye exams and appropriate treatment. Treatment may include injections into the eye or laser treatment to the affected areas of the retina. Above all, early diagnosis is crucial to long-term vision prognosis.

Q. My elderly mother and father don’t sleep well. Could I also be at risk?

although an interesting study was done in Sweden in the mid 1990s. The results, published in the Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics, were significant. Restless sleep, frequent awakening, difficulty getting to sleep again after waking up in the night, as well as tiredness at night, but with inability to get to sleep was found to be more common in both sexes if either parent had difficulty sleeping. Further, these problems were more common in respondents whose parents both had difficulty sleeping. Immediate relatives of patients with narcolepsy, hypersomnia and insomnia have been found to have a higher frequency of these disorders as well. In other related research, no differences in lifestyle or sleeping conditions could be found in elderly patients who complained of sleep problems. This led the researchers of the Sweden study to suggest that heredity factors may be the answer. While we always have to take into account that surveys such as this one are not without fault (one has to allow for human error), the results of this research are intriguing.

Q. I have sharp muscle pain around

my arm, and the pain radiates into my neck. What could this be?

A. The common causes of muscle pain include injury, abnormal biomechanics (inappropriate body posture), and overuse of joints. If you have tried resting your muscle and it doesn’t seem to help, and you are experiencing neck or spine with stiffness with a crunching sound around the joint, these symptoms could be referred to as Cervical Spondylopathy. Cervical spondylopathy is a broad term, which describes degenerated change of the joints and cartilage (spinal disc) in the neck and upper back. These degenerative changes usually result in the tearing of the cartilage, and thickening of the joint ligaments. These changes can increase pressure on the spinal nerves that extend out of the neck joint, generating pain and sensation toward the shoulder, arm and mid upper back. In cases where the arm is involved, patients may develop stiffness and limited range of motion. After ruling out trauma, serious arthritic change and pathological disorder, some soft tissue therapies based on meridian theory help manage the pain and discomfort.

Titan™ triggers new collagen growth while also causing existing collagen to tighten and firm. So you are producing more collagen as well as tightening what you have.

Most definitive procedures being done involve some form of excisional therapy. Today a non-excisional definitive surgical treatment is available called Trans Hemorrhoidal Dearterialization (THD). THD uses ultrasound to locate the hemorrhoidal arteries so that they may be ligated. The surgeon will then repair any prolapsed tissue if present, again using only suture. No tissue is cut or excised. THD is performed as an outpatient surgery and most patients will return to normal activities within 4 days. THD eliminates the most dreaded complications of hemorrhoid surgery such as anal stenosis and anal sphincter damage, which can lead to incontinence (loss of bowel control). Since THD is excisionless, and uses only sutures for repair, a patient’s pain is much less, recuperation is faster and healing is much quicker.

happens, the vertebral bodies that make up the spinal column become fragile and weak. Compression fractures can result from this, causing increased pain and debilitation. In addition, these fractures create a forward curvature in your mid-back area that pushes you to lean forward, changing your center of gravity. A procedure available that can help correct this, and almost instantly reduce the pain you are experiencing if the compression fracture is new, is Kyphoplasty.

Kyphoplasty is an innovative way to improve pain from the compression fracture and promotes restoration of the vertebral body. This is now available to be done in the outpatient setting, if your physician feels that you are a good candidate. Under X-ray guidance, the compression fractures are identified, and through a needle, a balloon is inflated and medical grade cement is placed. Once the cement has solidified, often the pain will be reduced and function and mobility will be restored. This is a fairly low-risk procedure that can help dramatically improve your quality of life. In addition to treating osteoporotic compression fractures, it can be utilized for traumatic compression fractures. A physician knowledgeable in this area can discuss with you if you are a candidate or not.

As part of the diabetic foot exam, your podiatrist will evaluate: • Skin to see if blisters, sores, ingrown toenails or infections are present • Blood flow down to the feet and back to the heart • Nerves to make sure you are able to feel minor pressure to various spots on each foot • Bones, joints, and muscles to make sure all are working well and free of deformities If you have issues in the above areas, additional tests, studies, or special shoes may be needed. Ultimately, your podiatrist will work with you to create a specific plan to reduce the risks and prevent complications such as ulcers, infections, and even amputations. In addition, it is recommended that people with low-risk foot and ankle issues get an exam annually. and aesthetically. We begin to notice these changes in our early to mid-thirties. Fat pads that once provided facial volume begin to migrate downward and reduce in size, resulting in heaviness to the lower face and a flattened upper face. Aesthetically, these appear as bags or hollowed dark circles under the eyes, creases, or folds from the nose to the corners of the mouth, jowls at the jaw line and a downward turn or frown to the corners of the mouth.

A quick and painless way to replace facial volume without surgery is to inject hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers, such as Restylane-L, Perlane-L, Juvederm XC, Voluma XC, and Radiesse into areas where fat naturally occurs in a youthful face. By adding dermal fillers to the cheek area, around the lateral eyebrow, and tear troughs, nasal folds and mouth, the face appears fuller, lifted and youthful. These fillers may also be used to contour the nose or chin with no pain or down time. Demal fillers, often referred to as liquid face-lifts, replace natural volume loss without changing a patient’s facial structure, resulting in a fuller, lifted, symmetrically contoured and youthful look in one 30-minute visit. There may be some minor bruising depending on the areas being treated, medications or a patient’s age. However, in most cases this procedure can be done days before a Holiday event.

BUSINESS TALK

Q. What is the latest news for the new fall season at Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park?

A. The biggest news is has been the arrival

of a pair of young cheetahs, an unrelated male and female, now on display at the allnew safari park. Wildlife World has contributed thousands of dollars to cheetah conservation over the past few years and we look forward to telling the story of cheetahs and other rare and endangered species to our visitors this season. Also on tap later this fall, is an outdoor exhibit for our California Sea Lions. The new habitat has a shipwreck theme, and will enable guests to view our trio of marine mammals — the only marine mammals in Arizona – from the ship's upper deck as well as from below the water through several large acrylic panels. In addition, there will be a sea lion focused educational show two times a day and the opportunity for a limited number of guests to feed them two times a day. Finally, it is with a fond farewell that we say goodbye to the ever-popular African Safari Train. After 20 years, it was time to retire the old train and install a brand new and larger gauge train. For those new to the Valley or just visiting Arizona, the zoo, aquarium plus the new safari park increases Wildlife World's developed area to more than 75 acres, and includes another dining option for guests. Visitors can walk around the safari park as well as take an optional tram ride through several animal exhibits.

Q. Are you too acidic and how do you change it?

A. What we eat and drink can have an acidic effect on our bodies. As a result, our bodies may not function optimally, which can affect your energy level and well-being. The body will do anything to maintain a pH level ranging from 7.0 to 7.4. When you have an acidic diet, consisting of sugar, white bread, red meat, etc., the body has to work extremely hard to maintain that level of pH. We have a small alkaline reserve system that has the capacity to buffer small amounts of acids created by our normal daily bodily functions. When that reserve is used up the result is as follows: • The body will actually draw alkaline minerals from our bones, causing osteoporosis. • It will also bind up acidic wastes in fat and store them, causing obesity. • Another condition acidity causes is a clogged digestive system resulting in lack of energy, fibromyalgia, mental fatigue, weight gain, premature aging and bloating. To maintain this alkaline reserve we need a diet that is 80 percent alkaline and only 20 percent acidic. Wheatgrass, is a great natural source of nutrients, it is a healthy alkalizing drink for the body. The chlorophyll content in this drink aids in removal of acidic waste by producing an unfavorable environment for bacterial growth in the body producing an alkaline-acid balance for ultimate health and energy.

A. Depression in seniors is often related to social isolation and boredom, especially for those living alone. Health issues that impact the ability to socialize are unavoidable in many cases, but with a little help, they can become more socially active. Sun Cities CareGivers employs companions who can spend time with clients in their home, or outside the home assisting with activities to help alleviate the boredom, and loneliness that can lead to depression. Having someone to assist with and share in activities can create a renewed interest in life, and encourage healthy social habits that may reduce depression symptoms. From discussing current events in the news, crafting, baking, writing letters, sending emails, and doing puzzles in the home, to visiting friends, attending church events, or dining and shopping outings, we can provide companions to encourage our clients to engage in behaviors that can lead to improved mental health. term, un-treated hearing loss?

A. There are side effects to living with hearing loss. These problems can compound over time and become even more difficult to correct. Early detection is very important. Some of the problems associated with longterm hearing loss are acoustic atrophy and dementia. Acoustic atrophy comes from living without hearing certain sounds for long periods of time. Your brain can lose its ability to interpret certain sounds that are not presented to it on a regular basis. This can affect the ability to understand specific speech sounds and a person’s overall ability to communicate. It can also create a problem known as recruitment. This is an issue where someone experiences discomfort with loud sounds sooner than they should due to the absence of that sound over time. Recruitment is something that can be overcome through appropriate instrumentation and counseling. Several studies show a direct link between untreated hearing loss and dementia. This issue would need to be discussed with your medical doctor in order to obtain all of the facts. In many cases, screening for hearing loss will cost you little to nothing out of pocket, and can significantly increase your chances of a successful fitting of instruments. Contact your local hearing health care professional today, and schedule a test.

Here are a few examples of what those changes might be. • • • • •

Any one of these is good cause to review your current health plan. We are very fortunate in Arizona because of the many health plan options available to those enrolled in Medicare. The majority of Medicare beneficiaries have chosen medical coverage in addition to ‘traditional’ Medicare. One of those options is a Medicare Advantage plan, and although they all offer very comprehensive protection they can also vary greatly from plan to plan and even from year to year. If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you receive an ‘Annual Notice of Change’ each October explaining any and/or all changes made to your benefits for the coming year. The Open Enrollment Period allows those with Medicare the opportunity to explore and learn about all options available to them on Jan. 1. Unlike, other times throughout the year, this 7-week period of Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, allows changes without restrictions. It’s important to learn and understand the differences, and options available before a well-informed decision should be made. Steps to More Effective Parenting

Being clear, consistent, and following up are proven ways to help children and parents create a more successful and happy home life.

Being a good parent is one of the most challenging yet rewarding jobs out there. Yet many don't approach parenting the same way. While some parents may approach situations with anger, yelling or intimidation—health experts recommend parents combat the stress they encounter with proper communication. So, where does it start? A frustrated parent may ask, “But yelling is the only thing that works. Is there another way? How do I get my child to do what they have to do?”

Be clear Here are some examples of common, but ineffective statements that parents make toward children that leave expectations clear as fog. “Behave! Grow up! Act your age! You are driving me crazy! You aren’t ready for school yet! The school bus is coming any minute; you are going to miss it! I can’t believe you didn’t finish your homework!” None of those statements is clear or specific. Instead, the parent comes off as critical with no real plan on what needs to be done to correct the situation. A parent might instead say to their child, “Put your shoes on right now.” This is a clear statement with a specific timeframe. Do this calmly, but firmly. Both parent and child know exactly what is expected and when it should be done. No ambiguity, no room to argue, no ability to misinterpret, and no criticism. 44

November 2014 | azhealthandliving.com

Be Consistent Parents that provide consistent expectations to their children create an environment of stability. Children will come to know that when mom or dad says something, they mean it. Setting consistent curfews, bedtimes, chores, and traditions help children to feel grounded and steady. While younger children may need expectations set for them, teenagers and parents should set appropriate expectations together. This allows the teens to have more ownership of their responsibilities. Parents that are united in their parenting avoid splitting. Splitting is when a child plays one parent off the other. The child will play one parent against another in order to get permission to go somewhere, eat something, do some activity, or get out of a responsibility. Parents must resist the temptation to want to be the preferred parent. If a parent undermines the other parent, this can lead to increased stress and frustration with parents and children.

Follow up Parents that follow up on their requests are more likely to see results than parents who make a request and don’t follow up. This is particularly important with things such as homework and other household responsibilities. It is easy to ask a child if they did their homework. It is harder to then, have them bring their homework and show it is done. Children are more likely to complete a task that they know their parent will check up on them.

Prevent Childhood Hunger

By Lois Brandt, a former Peace Corps volunteer and author of Maddi’s Fridge

While most Americans will worry about eating too much this holiday season, 16 million of our country’s children live in households that struggle to afford food, according to a 2012 report from the United States Department of Agriculture. We hear about ‘food insecurity’ quite a bit, but most people don’t have a clear picture of what that means. Food insecurity means an empty refrigerator. Food insecurity means soda instead of milk. Food insecurity means a child coming to school hungry and unable to focus. Poverty may not look exactly the same in our country as it does in a war-torn region or a developing country, but it is affecting our children and their futures. Sometimes, working parents have to choose between rent and food, medicine and food, or gas and food. Here are four things you can do to help prevent childhood hunger. Support nonprofit organizations like Feeding America. Feeding America is a national network of food banks that feeds more that 37 million people through food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters. Talk to your children about how they can help. Rather than sheltering your children from this sad fact of life, talking to them about it can help nurture their compassion and empathy. There’s plenty they can do to help, from making posters to raise awareness, to organizing a food drive at school. Taking action teaches children that they do have the power and ability to change the world for the better. Don’t make childhood hunger a political issue. Whatever your take on heavily politicized issues that surround the problem, realize that no matter the decisions a parent has made in his or her lifetime, children are innocent and have no control of their family’s circumstances. Volunteer with your family at a shelter or food pantry during the busy holiday season. While serving or cooking food for a holiday-themed meal at a shelter during Thanksgiving or Christmas does not solve the larger problem, it will affect every person whose life you touch that day. Your efforts and kind words can become a fond, lifelong memory for a child, or remind adults that others care and they’re not alone. azhealthandliving.com

BE PRESENT

FAMILY, KIDS & RELATIONSHIPS By Henry Hutcheson, certified Family Business Advisor, founder of Family Business USA consultancy and author of Little Secrets of Family Business

Strategies to Ensure Family Business Success Non-family businesses can learn a lot from family businesses. According to a recent Harvard Business Review study, family businesses outperformed nonfamily businesses during the boom years leading up to the 2008 recession, and during the 2001 and 2008 recession years. Family businesses were less likely to lay off workers during the lean times, and more likely to maintain their emphasis on socially responsible programs — and that’s just the businesses that survived. Many closed their doors. The factor that enables family businesses to rise to the top is trust. Family members can potentially trust one another far more than non-family members. However, trust can erode – when a family member can’t or won’t perform at the necessary level; when there’s a sense of entitlement; drug abuse; laziness— and that can have serious, business-killing consequences. If the business is professionalized, there will be a way to deal with those issues. However, too often, safeguards are not in place. Here are five top success strategies for family businesses:

Parents in family businesses tend to overpay the next generation, or pay everyone equally despite differing levels of responsibility. Both are bad practices.

46 November 2014 | azhealthandliving.com

Keep the lines of communication open. Schedule regular family meetings to discuss topics and issues of concern such as; business transition, business performance and responsibilities. Include all of the family members, no matter where in the hierarchy their jobs fall – exclusion creates animosity. Create a family manual that lays out the ground rules for how the meetings will take place to ensure everyone gets a chance to be heard and impediments to communication are left at the door. Assign clear roles and responsibilities. It’s natural to feel that everything is “my” business, as a family member. However, not everything is every family member’s responsibility. Job definitions prevent everyone from jumping in to tackle the same problem, and help ensure the business runs smoothly.

Keep good financial data. The downfall of many small businesses and family businesses is not having solid data. Have a single point of contact to manage the finances. If you’re small enough, you can rely on a family member. Otherwise, you’ll need to bring in a qualified accountant. You may cringe at the cost for this, but the difference between a good accountant and a bad one is the difference between knowing exactly where you are on the road and trying to drive with a mud-covered windshield. Avoid overpaying family members. Market-based compensation is fundamental and essential. Parents in family businesses tend to overpay the next generation, or pay everyone equally despite differing levels of responsibility. Both are bad practices. The longer unfair compensation practices continue, the messier it will be to clean up when it blows up. Don’t hire relatives if they’re unqualified. Competence is key. Family businesses are a conundrum: The family aspect generates unqualified love, while the business side cares about profits. Thus, family members will be hired to provide them with a job, even though they’re not qualified. The remedy is to get them trained, move them to a role that matches their skills, or have them leave. More than 70 percent of all businesses are family businesses – they account for a significant number of new jobs and a large portion of the GDP — and that’s not the only reason they’re so important. They’re motivated by profits, but also by other important considerations: pride in the family name, building something for future generations, philanthropy. For those reasons, they contribute in tremendous ways to social stability. They make our communities better.

FITNESS, NUTRITION & SPORTS

STAY ACTIVE & FIT

By Ryan Read, ISSA certified personal trainer, certified specialist in performance nutrition and owner of Thrive Specialized Training

Tips for Encouraging Family Fitness Is your family in an exercise rut? Getting your kids to look forward to stretching their legs can sometimes seem impossible. In fact, many parents can often stand helpless, wondering how to compete against video game consoles, cell phones or potato chips. The proof is all-around us. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the health of too many North Americans is in danger because of unhealthy lifestyles. If that isn’t enough, the CDC reports the percentage of young people who are overweight has more than tripled since 1980. So, what should parents do to get their children moving more often? Finding the time can be the greatest challenge for parents and kids. After all, how do you squeeze exercise in around doctor appointments, homework and work demands? The good news—exercise comes in many forms and can be a lot of fun! With a little creativity you can easily add some fun physical activity into your parenting style.

Be an example Kids with parents who take care of their bodies and participate in regular physical activity are more likely to make their own health a priority. Kids, especially younger children, naturally follow their parents. So, lead the way by making sure to set a good example.

Make exercise part of your family time It’s not hard to find activities the whole family can do together, such as a daily walk or bike ride in the neighborhood. Invite your kids to join you during your favorite workout video. They may not be able to do all the exercises, but they will be moving and trying!

Let the groove make you move Turn on the radio or play some fun songs on your mp3 player, to rock out together as a family. Whether you’re jumping around or busting your favorite dance move, you can burn some calories and have fun all at the same time.

Encouragement goes a long way One of the best things you can do is provide encouragement and support. Help your child find a sport, or physical activity that best suits them and their strength. Children that feel empowered and confident are more likely to continue with an activity or sport.

Blending video games and exercise Video games can offer the chance to jump and move around so, don’t underestimate the value of all video games.

The Journal of the American Medical Association has found that people who use their electronics in conjunction with a healthy diet can lose three times more weight than people who don’t. If you’re having a tough time getting your child to play outside, consider buying an electronic fitness program that requires the child to get moving or gives scores based on accuracy of moves. These can be motivators for many youth who struggle to get outside and exercise. At the end of the day when you’re fit, your body works well, feels good, and can do all the things you want to do, like run around with your friends. Don’t allow distractions, junk food and an overload of technology to cause problems for your kid. If not careful, they can escalate into diabetes, bone and joint issue or worse, heart disease. No matter how you decide to get fit with your kids, make sure to make it a habit and keep it safe. By starting sooner rather than later, you will help influence your children to be active and eat right to stay healthy and live longer. azhealthandliving.com |November 2014

Aside from acting accolades, Bell has also earned the ecosuperstar title for her efforts to living a healthy and allnatural lifestyle. Currently, she and husband Dax Shepard and their daughter Lincoln are expecting arrival of a new family member. Bell, expecting her second child, isn’t compromising on her selection of clothes. To say the least, she is confident wearing fitted clothes that compliment her growing body as well as her baby bump. “I make a joke that when I’m pregnant, I always dress a little sluttier,” Bell says to PEOPLE Magazine, laughing. “It makes me feel more like a human and less like a whale.” Bell’s protective and giving nature influenced her decision to team up with her fellow celebrity friend, Josh Duhamel, to raise pet adoption awareness by featuring in Web series in which she shared her story of adopting her two pups, Lola and Mr. Shakes. This beautiful personality has one generous heart! Speaking of beauty, as an ambassador for Neutrogena Naturals, Bell encourages women to use a beauty regimen that reflects a natural lifestyle. “It’s always simpler than you think. She is a serious promoter for water conservation, and celebrating her third year with Every Drop Counts! “This campaign really isn't about denying yourself anything — it's just about getting into the mindset of being conscientious when it comes to using the planet's resources. It can be about something as simple as using the water that you wash your fruits and veggies in to water your garden. Shutting off the water, waiting to run the dishwasher until there's a full load — there are a ton of easy ways to save water,” Bell shares with refinery29.com. While saving water is important, protection from damaging sun rays shouldn’t be ignored either. During an interview with refinery29.com, Bell shared how her efforts to staying out of the sun led her to achieve glowing skin.

“I use some kind of SPF every day, and I stayed out of the sun starting at a very young age. I remember laying out when I was an adolescent, and I remember going to tanning salons because I thought it was cool. Then I got my head on straight, because I realized that I did not want to look like the women who worked in that tanning salon when I got older! And, of course, for medical reasons, as well as aesthetic ones. So, I reapply as much as possible. I apply sunscreen repeatedly to my hands and arms, especially when I'm driving. When I'm working on a set and can't reapply the sunscreen over my makeup, I just try to stay out of the sun as much as possible.” Professionally and personally satisfied, Bell accepts change and challenges that come her way with utmost positivity. Her future forecast entails taking care of her growing family while promoting a healthy lifestyle. Hopefully it won’t be long before Bell shakes up the industry with her upcoming projects. azhealthandliving.com | November 2014

PLAN & SAVE

By Bob Epperly, author of Growing Up After Fifty: From Exxon Executive to Spiritual Seeker, and co-author of Interactive Career Development: Integrating Employer and Employee Goals.

Tips for Correcting Lifestyle Imbalance The Serenity Prayer goes a long way in work-life balance; it reads “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

With reports of the unemployment rate dropping to 7 percent, lower than it was even five years ago and down from a peak of 10 percent in October 2009, many are breathing a sigh of relief. However, the effects of a long bout of high unemployment are sure to have thrown off the balance of employee well-being. Of course, the rate does not take into account those who are underemployed, including over skilled workers in menial jobs and those with too few hours. For those lucky enough to have decent employment, many feel insecure and are willing to skew their work-life balance into a tailspin, with exaggerated emphasis on their career. Most people cannot afford to simply refuse the demands of their job, so what’s a worker to do? Here are five tips for correcting lifestyle imbalance.

Ii t’s never enough Ambition is admirable, but if it’s all that drives you, no matter how much you accomplish, it will never be enough. If professional ambition is more important to you than anything else in your life that’s a red flag that your life is dangerously unbalanced. The consequences will be painful feelings of emptiness, lack of fulfillment and having missed out. Take steps now to restore balance, beginning with personal, non-work relationships.

No one ever says, at the end of their life that they should have worked longer and spent less time with family 56 November 2014 | azhealthandliving.com

When it’s all said and done, life is short, and many realize that time is life’s most precious resource. Intense focus onwork tends to deprive professionals of opportunities with their loved ones – moments and memories that cannot be replaced. Set goals for how much time you will spend giving your family 100 percent of your attention each day and week, and stick to them!

Make communication a top priority The importance and value of real communication cannot be overemphasized. More important than speaking is listening. My relationships immediately improved when I began listening very carefully to what was being said.”

Only you are responsible for your life The Serenity Prayer goes a long way in work-life balance; it reads “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” Recognize that you are responsible for your life, and focus on the aspects of it over which you have influence while recognizing those you need to let go.

Accept who you are This can be challenging; it demands courageous selfreflection and letting go of the need for external approval. Give yourself permission to be you.

Life Insurance, Meeting Today’s Needs By Ted Bernstein, life insurance expert, and founder of Life Insurance Concepts, Inc.

The percentage of Americans who have life insurance has hit a 50-year low, despite the fact that more Americans than ever have concerns about their ability to financially, weather a crisis or to someday retire, according to recent surveys. This tells us that people are unaware of recent changes that make life insurance more affordable, more accessible, and more relevant to today’s needs. The fact is more of us need life insurance. Nearly half of all couples are in dual-income households; if something happens to one spouse or partner, the survivor is likely to have trouble paying the bills. Add to that, 38 percent of Americans believe they won’t have enough money to retire, according to a 2012 Pew Research survey. Life insurance provides that retirement income. Here are four ways life insurance is becoming more accessible and relevant:

Don’t assume you’ll be rejected or pay more because you’re overweight, use tobacco infrequently, or have been treated for substance abuse. Underwriters are trying to determine whether lifestyle or medical issues affect your mortality today. So if you’re 30 pounds overweight with no related medical issues, you have a good shot at standard coverage. As for tobacco use, a blood test determines the amount of cotinine – a byproduct of nicotine metabolism – in your system. A certain level is acceptable to some carriers. For those with a history of drug addiction and successful treatment, standard coverage is possible. The key is disclosure. Getting older does not mean you automatically pay more. The old rule was to buy young and lock in lower premiums, then hang onto your policy for dear life. That only benefited insurance companies and the agent who sold the policy. Today, healthy buyers will get more insurance for the same or less premium by refinancing their existing coverage. It’s a refi – use the built-up equity, the cash value of your policy, to neutralize your older age. Thanks to better mortality rates, healthy buyers always get better coverage today than the policy they bought 10, 20 or 30 years ago.

You can save on premiums and provide guaranteed income for your beneficiary by choosing the payout in installments. Traditionally, life insurance claims are paid in one lump sum. The new Installment Life Option is an innovation to meet the needs of people without sufficient retirement savings, and for those concerned their loved ones may lose the principal through mismanagement or a stock market correction. When the policy owner chooses a deferred payout at the time of purchase, the insurance companies can reduce premiums by as much as 50 percent because they will have more time to pay the claim. Plus, your beneficiary doesn’t have to worry about managing a very large sum of money. Purchasing no load insurance = better value across the board. In the past, life insurance buyers had no option but to buy a policy from companies with builtin commissions. These are non-negotiable and not disclosed to the buyer. Although, buying through a knowledgeable agent is strongly recommended, buyers should inquire about 'no load' policies priced without the built-in commissions. You pay a fee to the agent that is typically lower than built-in commissions, and it’s transparent, making comparison much easier. azhealthandliving.com | November 2014

Lead paint poisoning affects over one million children today. Learning disabilities, hearing loss, speech delays, violent behavior and, in rare cases, seizures and even death: these are just some of the effects lead paint poisoning has on young children. If your home was built before 1978, lead paint on your walls, doors, windows and sills may be dangerous. And it’s not just large paint chips that can cause damage. In fact, three granules of lead dust are enough to poison your child. Let’s make all kids lead-free kids. To learn more about the simple steps you can take to safeguard your family, log on to LEADFREEKIDS.org or call 800-424-LEAD.

Bond Between Grandparents & Grandkids What used to be the "golden years" of life for seniors is now turning into any opportunity to spend even more time with their youngest family members. Nowadays, a growing number of grandparents are called on to provide child care for their grandkids, many of whom are growing up in two-income households. Others are helping to raise grandkids while providing financial assistance for adult children who may not be able to live on their own. This trend has been corroborated in a few recent studies. Information from the Pew Research Center showed 7.7 million children in the United States were living in the same household as one of their grandparents in 2011. A University of Chicago analysis of a decade of data based on interviews with 13,614 grandparents, ages 50 and older, found that 61 percent of grandparents provided at least 50 hours of care for their grandchildren during any given year between 1998 and 2008. In addition, an April 2012 study for the MetLife Mature Market Institute and the nonprofit Generations United, an intergenerational policy group, found that 74 percent of respondents provided weekly child care or baby-sitting service for grandkids. Grandparents often cite helping their own children financially as well as staying in touch with grandchildren as motivating factors behind providing care. According to Generations United, staying in touch with grandkids can give seniors a feeling of self-worth and improve their overall health. When spending so much time together, grandparents may develop special relationships with their grandchildren, who may benefit from the knowledge and wisdom offered by their elders. The following are some lessons grandparents can share with youngsters.

Empathy. By sharing stories of how things were in their younger years, when opportunities may have been scarcer, grandparents can help teach grandchildren empathy. Grandchildren may learn to be grateful for the things they have and the people around them, rather than taking what they have for granted. 60

November 2014 | azhealthandliving.com

Family history. Grandparents can tell grandchildren about family members, including youngsters' own parents, and shed light on the generations that came before them. Looking through photos or watching old movies can provide the avenue by which to start conversations about family history and give children opportunities to ask questions. Interests. Children may be excited about learning new skills or hobbies taught to them by their grandparents. Anything from gardening to woodworking can be shared. Respect. Children who grow up respecting their grandparents may have an increased tendency to respect authority figures outside their homes, which may help children grow up to be more courteous and kind. Grandchildren also offer benefits to their grandparents. Companionship, new experiences, and conversation can help keep grandparents' minds sharp and body’s active well into their golden years.

Your Will: The Overlooked Bucket List Item Of the trendy terms to come around in the past decade, “bucket list” remains among the most useful. As a neologism, hopefully, it endures because it reminds us of how precious our time is – and that it’s important to plan wisely. Unfortunately, after some have listed their items and even checked a few things off, they forget about one important item that really counts after they have ‘kicked the bucket’ – their will. Only about 40 percent of adults in America have a will, which is probably due to people not wanting to be reminded of their own mortality and that life will go on without them.

But what’s the alternative? If you die without one, the state decides what becomes of your property, without regard to your priorities. Why not enjoy the fact that a will is an instrument of power? You get to decide who gets what.

Since so many adults don’t have a will, many don’t understand how they work. Here is a breakdown of a will into four basic parts:

Executors

After working a lifetime for your assets, you deserve to have them go where you want after you’re gone, and your family will be grateful to you for not leaving them with the headache of trying to sort out your estate.

62

November 2014 | azhealthandliving.com

Most wills begin by naming an executor, the person responsible for carrying out the wishes outlined in the will. Duties include assessing the value of the estate, gathering the assets, paying inheritance tax and other debts if necessary, and distributing assets among beneficiaries. It is recommended that you name at least two executors in case your first choice is unable to fulfill the obligation.

Guardians A will allows you to designate a guardian for your minor children. Whomever you appoint, you will want to make sure beforehand that the individual is able and willing to assume the responsibility. For many people, this is the most important part of a will since, if you die without naming a guardian, the court will decide who takes care of your children.

Gifts This section enables you to identify people or organizations to whom you wish to give gifts of money or specific possessions, such as family heirlooms or a car. You can also specify conditional gifts, such as a sum of money to a young daughter, when she reaches a certain age.

Estate Your estate encompasses everything you own, including real property, financial investments, cash and personal possessions. Once you have identified specific gifts you would like to distribute, you can apportion the rest of your estate in equal shares among your heirs, or you can split it into percentages. For example, you may decide to give 45 percent each to 2 children and the remaining 10 percent to a sibling.

Change Your Thoughts. Change Your Words. Change Your World. Sponsored by

You’re not legally required to have a professional write a will for you, but it is highly recommend you get certified help because these documents are often contested by people who are unhappy with the decisions you made. After working a lifetime for your assets, you deserve to have them go where you want after you’re gone, and your family will be grateful to you for not leaving them with the headache of trying to sort out your estate.
