OVER THE DESERT WITH HOT AIR EXPEDITIONS
T
ake a magic carpet ride with Hot Air Expeditions as you soar over the gorgeous Sonoran desert in a Hot Air Balloon. Your Arizona Balloon adventure begins when you meet the ballooning crew at the Deer Valley Airport in North Phoenix. Here you are taken under their wing and shuttled to your desert launch site, which varies daily based on wind conditions. Upon arrival, the hot air balloon has already begun its inflation, where the pilot uses a gas burner to heat the air inside the balloon envelope to about 212 degrees. Because hot air is lighter and less dense than the cooler air around the balloon, the heated air causes the balloon to rise. Once upright, you’re invited to hop in and begin the adventure! You slowly drift off the ground, feeling as though the balloon is almost weightless, gently skimming the earth, proceeding to rise to heights of up to 7,000 feet in the air. While among the clouds, your pilot points out local wildlife, which can include quail, jackrabbit, roadrunner and coyote, as well as plant life and interesting facts about the land you’re drifting over. We’re also told that hot air balloons float with the wind, so the direction the wind is blowing is where the balloon will go – there’s no steering, but we’re not scared – all of Hot Air Expeditions’ pilots have hundreds of hours of piloting experience. After about an hour in the air, your pilot returns you to the land you admired from afar, and you are greeted with a gourmet hot breakfast catered by Vincents on Camelback with champagne, presented on tables in the heart of the desert, complete with linens and china. But the fun doesn’t end there, your pilot takes you through a traditional balloonists ceremony and awards a commemorative flight certificate. There is simply nothing finer. AZ Hot Air Expeditions provides hot air balloon flights daily, year-round in Phoenix/Scottsdale and Tucson, AZ! Rated ‘Best Balloon Flight in Phoenix’ for 21 years in a row by Fodor’s Travel. Come see why! 480.502.6999 800.831.7610 HotAirExpeditions.com, MoreInfo@HotAirExpeditions.com

lava river cave
N
ot all museums are in a building in a city. Lava River Cave is a natural museum where people can learn about history, geology, biology and cave climates. Unlike other museums, you can’t just walk through a door to visit Lava River Cave. The entrance is actually a hole in the ground and the floor just inside is covered with large, slippery boulders. Also, conditions throughout the cave are always cold and dark. This mile-long lava tube cave north of Flagstaff was formed roughly 700,000 years ago by molten rock that erupted from a volcanic vent in nearby Hart Prairie. The top, sides and bottom of the flow cooled and solidified first, after which the insides of the lava river continued to flow emptying out the present cave. Ample evidence of how the tube was born is written in the rocks of which it is formed. Small wave-like undulations in the floor are the remains of ripples frozen in the last trickle of molten rock that flowed from the cave. Stone icicles hanging from the ceiling show where a final blast of volcanic heat caused the rock to partially re-liquefy and drip. Dress appropriately when you come to visit, with warm clothes and sturdy shoes. The cave is as cool as 42° even in summer, and you may even find some ice inside. The rocks are always sharp and slippery, too. Bring two or three sources of light, in case one happens to fail, it can be very dark one mile from the nearest light source. Here’s an insider tip - bring glows sticks and/or glow necklaces for everyone in your group! The Lava River Cave is located about 14 miles north of Flagstaff on paved highways and graveled Forest Roads. Drive 9 miles north of Flagstaff on US 180 and turn west (left) on FR 245 (at milepost 230). Continue 3 miles to FR171 and turn south 1 mile to where FR 171B turns left a short distance to Lava River Cave. Though the cave is open year-round, FR 245 and/or FR171 may be closed in the winter. In those cases, you will need to hike or ski in to the cave. Call the Flagstaff Ranger District at 928-5260866 for current conditions and more information. AZ

LOST DUTCHMAN
“There’s gold in these hills, tenderfoot,” says my mother to me each year during our annual trek to the Lost Dutchman State Park in Apache Junction. Spend enough time in Arizona, and you’re bound to get gold fever. So grab your gold pan and shovel, arrange for a grub stake, buy a map, and saddle up your mule as I tell you about the Grand Canyon State’s most famous gold mine story - the Lost Dutchman. During the 1840’s, the Peralta family of northern Mexico supposedly developed a rich gold mine in the Superstitions. According to legend, an Apache ambush ended the family’s last expedition, and the gold remained in the area. In the 1870’s, Jacob Waltz (“the Dutchman”) was said to have located the mine through the aid of the Peralta descendant. Waltz and his partner, Jacob Weiser, worked in the mine and allegedly hid one or more caches of gold in the Superstitions. Most stories place the gold in the vicinity of Weaver’s Needle.
HERE COMES SANTA
After Waltz’s death in 1891, several people attempted to seek out the Lost Dutchman’s Mine, all without luck. Later searchers have sometimes met with foul play or even death, contributing to the superstition and legend of these mountains. The legend of the “lost mine” has been fueled by a number of people who were supposed to have known the mine’s location or even worked it. Maps have surfaced over the years, only to become lost or misplaced. The Lost Dutchman story has experienced a renewed interest because of the History Channel’s 2015 series LEGEND OF THE SUPERSTITION MOUNTAINS. The program teaser states: “Legend tells of the Lost Dutchman’s gold mine hidden somewhere within the 160,000 acres of brutal Arizona desert known as the “Superstition Mountains.” The promise of a $200 million mother lode has lured thousands of treasure hunters and continues to claim the lives of those eager to decipher the legend’s clues and riddles. With cursed mountains said to drive men mad and a hidden fortune of gold worth killing for, the treasure hunter’s greatest danger may be the man at his side. Trust at your own peril if you dare to tread into HISTORY’s Legend of the Superstition Mountains.” Gold, mystery, adventure, danger - are you interested yet? If your search for the treasure proves as fruitless as mine, you’ll be happy to know there’s a lot to do in and around the park. Named after the fabled lost gold mine, this park is located in the Sonoran Desert at an elevation of 2000 feet. The Lost Dutchman State Park offers a variety of hiking trails, nature trails, campsites, picnic facilities, and special programs throughout the year. The park is located 5 miles north of Apache Junction, off of AZ 88 (the old Apache Trail), at the base of the Superstition Mountains and is open 365 days a year. azstateparks.com/Parks/LODU/ Good luck with the search - you’re going to need it. According to mom, “This is our year!” And with gold hovering around $1300 an ounce, I hope she’s right!

Arizona KEYMagazine
A selection of stunning historic and modern instruments is on display alongside compelling sounds and visuals that bring them to life. These timeless masterpieces, many of which have been valued at millions of dollars, were handcrafted by master luthiers, including Andrea Amati, the founding father of the violin; the rogue genius Guarneri del Gesù; and the master himself—Antonio Stradivari. The exhibition, which is open through June 5, 2016, also includes several modern-day masterworks that demonstrate the continuing influence of early masters. In addition to these exceptional instruments, MIM is showcasing precious artifacts, including a selection of tools and designs from the workshop of Antonio Stradivari, which have seldom been displayed outside of the master violin maker’s hometown of Cremona, Italy. Throughout the run of the exhibition, MIM is hosting a series of concerts and events which give guests additional opportunities to celebrate the craftsmanship of these instruments, legacy of their makers and region they are from. On Sunday, May 1, the ASU String Faculty will present “Masterpieces in the Valley,” a concert in which members of the exceptionally talented ASU String Faculty perform on and discuss their treasured instruments. And on June 4 and 5 guests can say farewell to the exhibition with a celebration of Italian culture and heritage as part of MIM’s Experience Italy event. For more information, to view a full schedule of events or to purchase tickets, visit MIM.org or call 480.478.6000. AZ

T
he Hall of Flame is America’s largest firefighting museum. Six indoor air-conditioned galleries display over 35,000 square feet of exhibits that tell the story of firefighting in America and Great Britain. Almost seventy restored pieces of fire apparatus are on exhibit, dating from a hand drawn English fire engine built in 1725 to a forty foot long, twelve foot high snorkel fire engine dating from 1971. Other exhibits display rare insurance fire mark, beautiful 19th century lithographs by Currier and Ives, operating fire alarm equipment, and exhibits of helmets, scale models, ladders, escape nets, and specialized firefighting tools. A gallery is dedicated to American wildland firefighters, including personal equipment, a full size replica of a lookout cabin, and a fully restored brush truck from Los Angeles, California. Another gallery contains the National Firefighting Hall of Heroes, with the names of over nine thousand American firefighters who have died in the line of duty from 1800 to the present day, as well as the names and photos of American firefighters who have been recognized for acts of heroism. Kids and their parents can learn about the most important basics of fire safety behavior in the learning center, which includes a number of hands on activities for children. A 1951 American La France fire engine is available for boarding. All of the exhibits are accessible to the handicapped and there is plenty of free parking adjacent to the museum. The Hall is in the Phoenix Papago Park, across Van Buren Street from the Phoenix Zoo and near the Phoenix Botanical Gardens and the Phoenix Memorial Baseball Stadium. The Museum is about a ten-minute drive from Sky Harbor Airport. AZ

Sedona and North Central Arizona
V
aried and vibrant aptly describe the north central region. The famous Red Rocks of Sedona. The bar where Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday drank whiskey. The mining town carved on a hillside. With four seasons and something for everyone, this region begs to be seen and will not soon be forgotten.
POPULAR DESTINATIONS INCLUDE: Sedona – Often called “Red Rock Country” Sedona is a four seasons playground for everyone – whether you’re into history and archaeology; arts and culture; power shopping; outdoor sports; or the spiritual and metaphysical, imagine doing all this in a backdrop of some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Indeed, this picturesque city is surrounded by red-rock monoliths named Coffeepot, Cathedral and Thunder Mountain. At the north end of the city is the stunning Oak Creek Canyon, a breathtaking chasm that even today, is wildly wonderful. 800-288-7336 Prescott – Just 90 minutes north of Phoenix, “Everybody’s Hometown” is an ideal destination for golfers, outdoor adventure seekers, and western history buffs. From its majestic rock formations at Granite Dells to five area lakes to more than 450 miles of wellgroomed hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, Prescott knows no boundaries for exploring the area’s stunning natural beauty. The downtown Courthouse Plaza is Prescott’s historic heart. The plaza is bordered by the famous Whiskey Row, known to have hosted the likes of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday--and still hosts eclectic boutiques, galleries, antique shops, and restaurants. 800-266-7534 Jerome – After the mines closed in 1953 and “King Copper” left town, the population went from a peak of 15,000 in the 1920s to a low of 50 people. The Jerome Historical Society guarded the buildings against vandalism and the elements, the Douglas Mansion became a

State Park in 1965, and Jerome became a National Historic Landmark in 1976. During the 60’s and 70’s, Jerome offered a haven for artists. Soon newcomers and Jerome old timers were working together to bring Jerome back to life. Today, Jerome is very much alive with writers, artists, artisans, musicians, historians, and families. 928-634-2900 AZ

Grand Canyon The
“The Grand Canyon fills me with awe. It is beyond comparison--beyond description; absolutely unparalleled throughout the wide world .... Let this great wonder of nature remain as it now is. Do nothing to mar its grandeur, sublimity and loveliness. You cannot improve on it. But what you can do is to keep it for your children, your children’s children, and all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American should see.” — President Theodore Roosevelt ENJOYING THE SOUTH RIM Individual interests, available time, weather, and health considerations can influence your visit to the South Rim. Use the information available on the web site, www.nps.gov/grca/, to help plan your visit. Once you arrive in the park, read The Guide and talk with the rangers for up-to-the-minute information. Elevations along the rim vary from 6650 feet (2030 m) at Hermits Rest to more than 7400 feet (2260 m) at Desert View near the East Entrance. Summer temperatures are pleasant along the rim, but increase rapidly as you descend into the canyon. Low humidity makes for big temperature differences between day and night. The low humidity and high elevation also means that it is important to drink water frequently. Afternoon thundershowers are common in July, August, and early September. Windy conditions prevail in April and May. Snow may fall as early as November. Winter snowstorms continue into March. Many miles of roads along the rim feature numerous pullouts to enjoy the views. Hermit Road to Hermit Rest is open to private vehicles only from December through February. The free shuttle bus system provides a worryfree way to explore the developed areas of the rim. 70
The Rim Trail winds along the rim for more than 13 miles (21 km), much of it paved and suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. The Greenway, a broad, paved pathway suitable for hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, leads two miles (3 km) from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Grand Canyon Village. A separate segment heads east from Hermits Rest along the rim. The Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend steeply into the canyon. Rangers present programs—walks, talks, and evening presentations—throughout the year. All activities are free. Check in The Guide for programs during your stay. VISITOR CENTERS The National Park Service staffs several visitor centers on the South Rim. All are open every day of the year; hours vary seasonally. Grand Canyon Visitor Center Located near Mather Point The largest visitor center on the South Rim is a good stop for an introduction to Grand Canyon and for assistance in planning your visit.

Arizona Visitors Ask…? BY JOHNNY FENTON, M.A. CONCIERGE, OMNI TUCSON NATIONAL RESORT
Q. We love vintage experiences when travelling. Any suggestions? A. If you enjoy pressing your face up against the window of times gone by, then it’s the perfect time for rolling along on Route 66 across its 158-mile span of Northern Arizona. In celebration of “America’s Highway” turning 90 this year (1926-2016) Arizona has published a list of 66 things to do along its route from visiting the famed and fully restored La Posada Hotel in Winslow, an architectural masterpiece of Southwest design by Mary Elizabeth Colter for Fred Harvey when the romance of train travel was in full bloom. While here, don’t miss the chance to take a selfie in the Standin’ on the Corner Park memorialized by The Eagles in their hit “Take it Easy.” And as you’re rolling along listening to a ZZ Top tune or “Born to be Wild” by Steppenwolf, pull your mythical motorcycle over and pay homage to the era at the Historic Powerhouse in Kingman, home to the Arizona Route 66 Museum, Route 66 Electric Vehicle Museum and Visitor Information Center. Be sure to pick up your Arizona Route 66 Passport/Travel Guide to be stamped along the route—just for fun. Calling all vintage shoppers fascinated with owning a piece of the past! When you are shopping for a new find to furnish your second home in the Southwest and you’re looking for something in retro ranch; or adding to your Kewpie doll collection; or stocking your closet because you’ve heard that “vintage is the new black”--then 7th Avenue in Phoenix is a treasure trove of such gewgaws. And a walk through the Disneyland of treasures-for-repurposing in Central Arizona can take place when doors open at Sweet Salvage every third Thursday through Sunday (April 21-24) with a new theme (the “mad scientist” theme was held in September before Halloween, and a Christmas spirit is evident in November’s theme.) Fresh merchandise is collected by eleven designers who scour multiple states in flea markets and estate sales in search of a broad range of items including furniture, décor, clothing and jewelry to fit the designated theme for the month. They then have 26 days to stage the theme in their warehouse/showroom. The designers are on site to assist you with answers to your questions at 4648 N. 7th Ave. (602) 279-2996. Of course, if you’re an Old West enthusiast, Southern Arizona was home to some of the most feared outlaws and respected lawmen who walked the streets of Bisbee’s Brewery Gulch or frequented Tombstone’s Birdcage Theater, “the wildest, roughest, wickedest honky-tonk between Basin Street and the Barbary Coast” before statehood when it was a part of the Arizona Territory during its mining heydays. Countless historic hotels and quaint shops abound in the Douglas-Bisbee-Tombstone triad.

If you’re looking for a spot to film your own family Western or stage a wedding, Harker’s Old West Museum on Tucson’s south side is retired construction worker Rick Harker’s labor of love. Complete with the town jail, saloon, dentist office, blacksmith shop and graveyard, it is a stuntmenin-training venue, home to Explorer Post #6039, and hangout for former professional stuntmen. This monument to Harker’s skills as a tradesman and passion for the pioneer spirit of the Old West is open Saturdays 10 a.m.-3 p.m. (520) 272-7439. And timing is key for true fans of America’s Pastime, for April 16th and 17th is the weekend Bisbee hosts its annual Vintage Baseball games at the historic Warren Ball Park. Built in 1909 by the town’s copper mining company Bisbee stakes its claim that this is the “Oldest Continuously Operating Ball Park in the U.S.” In its opening two decades, the Warren field hosted town, company and semi-pro teams. The first organized minor league team, the Bisbee Bees began playing there in 1928, in the Class D Arizona State League. Bisbee teams have been farm clubs of the Chicago Cubs, the Los Angeles Angels and the New York Yankees, and some famous names have passed through town. Jim Thorpe of later football fame, played for the Giants here and future Yankees player and manager Billy Martin played at Warren for the Phoenix Senators in 1947. Players will wear the games’earliest uniforms and play by the original rules of baseball. AZ
