ot all museums are in a building in a city. Lava River Cave is a natural museum where people can learn about history, geology, biology and cave climates. Unlike other museums, you can’t just walk through a door to visit Lava River Cave. The entrance is actually a hole in the ground and the floor just inside is covered with large, slippery boulders. Also, conditions throughout the cave are always cold and dark. This mile-long lava tube cave north of Flagstaff was formed roughly 700,000 years ago by molten rock that erupted from a volcanic vent in nearby Hart Prairie. The top, sides and bottom of the flow cooled and solidified first, after which the insides of the lava river continued to flow emptying out the present cave. Ample evidence of how the tube was born is written in the rocks of which it is formed. Small wave-like undulations in the floor are the remains of ripples frozen in the last trickle of molten rock that flowed from the cave. Stone icicles hanging from the ceiling show where a final blast of volcanic heat caused the rock to partially re-liquefy and drip. Dress appropriately when you come to visit, with warm clothes and sturdy shoes. The cave is as cool as 42° even in summer, and you may even find some ice inside. The rocks are always sharp and slippery, too. Bring two or three sources of light, in case one happens to fail, it can be very dark one mile from the nearest light source. Here’s an insider tip - bring glows sticks and/or glow necklaces for everyone in your group! The Lava River Cave is located about 14 miles north of Flagstaff on paved highways and graveled Forest Roads. Drive 9 miles north of Flagstaff on US 180 and turn west (left) on FR 245 (at milepost 230). Continue 3 miles to FR171 and turn south 1 mile to where FR 171B turns left a short distance to Lava River Cave. Though the cave is open year-round, FR 245 and/or FR171 may be closed in the winter. In those cases, you will need to hike or ski in to the cave. Call the Flagstaff Ranger District at 928-5260866 for current conditions and more information. AZ

April is a perfect month to visit Monument Valley in northeastern Arizona. The weather is mild and the skies are typically clear - a wonderful combination for experiencing one of the most iconic geologic formations in the southwest. Monument Valley has been featured in many forms of media since the 1930s. Director John Ford used the location for a number of his best-known films, and thus, in the words of critic Keith Phipps, “its five square miles have defined what decades of moviegoers think of when they imagine the American West.” Monument Valley is a region of the Colorado Plateau characterized by a cluster of vast sandstone buttes, the largest reaching 1,000 ft above the valley floor. The area is part of the Colorado Plateau. The elevation of the valley floor ranges from 5,000 to 6,000 feet above sea level. The floor is largely siltstone of the Cutler Group, or sand derived from it, deposited by the meandering rivers that carved the valley. The valley’s vivid red color comes from iron oxide exposed in the weathered siltstone. The darker, blue-gray rocks in the valley get their color from manganese oxide. The buttes are clearly stratified, with three principal layers. The lowest layer is the Organ Rock Shale, the middle is de Chelly Sandstone, and the top layer is the Moenkopi Formation capped by Shinarump Conglomerate. The valley includes large stone structures including the famed “Eye of the Sun”. The Mittens (bottom photo) buttes are among the most recognizable formations. Other formations such as the Three Sisters, Elephant Butte, and the Thumb are accessible via a A 17-mile scenic drive. The area features many trails, and guided and unguided hikes abound. While in the area, be sute to check out Antelope Canyon (top photo) - one of the most colorful slot canyons in the US. Monument Valley is approximately 300 miles from Phoenix. Kayenta is a good starting point - take I-17 north to Flagstaff, I-40 to US 89 north, and then US 160 east to Kayenta. Tuba City also makes a nice home base, while Chinle is the closest community to Canyon de Chelly. Remember, the area surrounding Monumnet Valley is sparsely populated. Towns dot the landscape, but are far apart. Cell service is questionable - so be sure to bring plently of water, food, flashlight and emergency supplies just in case. Welcome to Arizona. Sedona Open Studios Tour April 28, 29 & 30

he Sedona Annual Studio Tour has become known as a golden opportunity for art lovers to visit with professional artists in authentic working environments and to purchase art while enjoying the lush landscape of Sedona and the Verde Valley. It will be the Sedona Visual Artists’ Coalition’s (SVAC) 14th annual Open Studios Tour. This exciting, self-guided event is free and runs daily from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday, April 28th through Sunday, April 30th. Past tour visitors report one of the distinct pleasures of shopping on the studio tour for their own collection or for gifts, is spending time with the wide variety of artists who offer a personal look at how and where a piece is made. Open Studios’ co-chair Mike Upp explains artists enjoy demonstrating their creative processes and, more importantly, making that special and personal connection with buyers and visitors alike. “For the visitor, the Tour experience invites the artwork to speak much more intimately to them as it provides an op-

Use the information available on the web site, www.nps.gov/grca/, to help plan your visit. Once you arrive in the park, read The Guide and talk with the rangers for up-to-the-minute information. Elevations along the rim vary from 6650 feet (2030 m) at Hermits Rest to more than 7400 feet (2260 m) at Desert View near the East Entrance. Summer temperatures are pleasant along the rim, but increase rapidly as you descend into the canyon. Low humidity makes for big temperature differences between day and night. The low humidity and high elevation also means that it is important to drink water frequently. Afternoon thundershowers are common in July, August, and early September. Windy conditions prevail in April and May. Snow may fall as early as November. Winter snowstorms continue into March. Many miles of roads along the rim feature numerous pullouts to enjoy the views. Hermit Road to Hermit Rest is open to private vehicles only from December through February. The free shuttle bus system provides a worryfree way to explore the developed areas of the rim. 70

The Rim Trail winds along the rim for more than 13 miles (21 km), much of it paved and suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. The Greenway, a broad, paved pathway suitable for hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, leads two miles (3 km) from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Grand Canyon Village. A separate segment heads east from Hermits Rest along the rim. The Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend steeply into the canyon. Q. What are some restaurants you recommend for guests with specific dietary needs (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, allergen sensitivity) traveling in Arizona? A. No nuts, no milk—no problem! Travelers needn’t have their business trip or vacation derailed because of food allergies or dietary restrictions—just ask your concierge for suggestions. (Clarification: This column is not written for the picky eater who “won’t eat anything that’s yellow or looks like animal reproductive organs. They have their own support group PEAS (Picky Eater Adult Support! I kid you not.) But 15 million Americans alone have food allergies. First, anyone with a serious restriction should scout out Allergy Eats, a website and smart phone app which is a peer-reviewed restaurant directory of over 800,000 restaurants. Arizona is home to all their top five chain restaurants rated. They are: Chipotle, P.F. Chang, Red Robin, Outback and Mellow Mushroom. And of course, the chefs at most fine dining restaurants strive to accommodate all guests’ healthrelated dining issues. But when you get overwhelmed with the choices on the internet, seek out the concierge for secret places and personal stories. The following are a select few of the local offerings that guests have raved about to our concierges. Edamame and education on the same plate? Flagstaff’s 1899 Bar & Grill in Northern Arizona on the NAU campus in the historic Union building takes its name and the inspiration for its American Bistro menu from the founding date of the University. The menu features many Southwestern dishes and supports the University’s hospitality program providing employment to its servers. 1899 B&G has an historic ambience with its original copper fireplace. The Herb Box in its three locations has been feeding people good nutritious whole foods since 1995 before it became a trend. Many items are gluten-free. The restaurant carries cage-free eggs, and hormone-free natural meats. My pick for ambiance is the South Bridge location with an enormous patio on the lake at 7134 E. Stetson Drive. A favorite on Susan Wilcox’s weekend brunch menu is the cinnamon buckwheat pancakes.www.theherbbox.com Another great choice for patio dining in this ideal Spring weather is the craftsmen-style Greene House, a cottage in Scottsdale where California-inspired cuisine is heartily consumed in this natural setting. The menu has several gluten-free options, organic produce and GMO-free protein offerings. Tucked in the town of Lake Havasu City in Western Arizona is a must-experience stop for the vegetarian in your crowd and all others.
