holiday light displays

E

njoy the holiday season - the hustle and bustle, hot chocolate, gift-giving, visits with family and friends, and holiday lights. Here’s a short list of wonderful light displays - more displays and information can be found at ArizonaKEY.com.

Glendale: Don’t miss the glittering magic of Glendale Glitters. You won’t believe your eyes as you take in the stunning display of 1.5 million lights illuminating twelve blocks of Historic Downtown Glendale all month. On Fridays and Saturdays, enjoy these special events: Dec 4 - 5: Glendale’s Jingle Bell Rockin’ Nights Dec 11 - 12: Glendale’s Winter Wonderland Weekend Dec 18 - 19: Glendale’s Spirit of Giving Weekend Sedona: During the month of December, Sedona is home to a winter wonderland of holiday events. On December 4th from 5-7pm at Canyon Breeze plaza there is a free Tree-lighting, entertainment and Santa visits with children. On Saturday, December 12th from 3-8pm is a cherished tradition which involves the lighting of 6,000 luminarias in Tlaquepaque’s courtyards and walkways at 5pm. Prescott: During the holidays, a palpable glow extends from the Prescott area. Part of this illumination comes from the festive lighting displays of Courthouse Plaza. Some originates from within the lighted window displays of Prescott’s boutiques, galleries and gift shops. The majority of this luminosity, however, seems to derive from the people themselves. Visit historic Prescott, Arizona’s Official Christmas City, and bask in some of that seasonal glow. Tempe: On Saturday, December 12th, Tempe Town Lake hosts the Fantasy of Lights Boat Parade. The most unique holiday event in the Valley, the parade features more than 50 festively lighted boats of all sizes. Fireworks finale! Tucson: 4th Avenue has a Winter Street Fair on December 11th, 12th, and 13th from 10am-6pm each day, including over 400 arts and crafts booths, over 35 food vendors, two stages, street musicians, food, jugglers, street performers, a kids’ art area, face painting, balloons, and more. The Winterhaven Festival of Lights runs from the 12th to the 26th, in the central Tucson neighborhood Winterhaven. The neighborhood glows nightly with LED lights, festive decorations, and music for walkers, runners, and riders of hay wagons & trolleys. AZ

publisher’spage NORAD TRACKS SANTA

For the past twelve years, I have published a small blurb at the end of our December Event Calendar alerting children and their parents that they could track Santa’s flight at NoradSanta.org. This website is simply wonderful, and I enjoyed using it on Christmas Eve with my daughter and son when they were younger. I though it was time to share some of the history of this wonderful endeavor that delights children worldwide. NORAD Tracks Santa is an annual Christmas-themed entertainment program, which has existed since 1955, produced under the auspices of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). Every year on Christmas Eve, “NORAD Tracks Santa” purports to track Santa Claus as he leaves the North Pole and delivers presents to children around the world. The program is in the tradition of the September 1897 editorial “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus” in the NY Sun. The program began on December 24, 1955 when a Sears department store placed an advertisement in a Colorado Springs newspaper which told children that they could telephone Santa Claus and included a number for them to call. However, the telephone number printed was incorrect and calls instead came through to Colorado Springs’ Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) Center. Colonel Shoup, who was on duty that night, told his staff to give all children that called in a “current location” for Santa Claus. A tradition began which continued when the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) replaced CONAD in 1958. Today, NORAD relies on volunteers to make the program possible. Each volunteer handles about forty telephone calls per hour, and the team typically handles more than 12,000 e-mails and more than 117,000 telephone calls from more than two hundred countries and territories. Most of these contacts happen during the twenty-five hours from 2 a.m. on December 24 until 3 a.m. MST on December 25. NORAD reported that for Christmas 2013, it logged 19.58 million unique visitors to its website on Christmas Eve. Through social media, it had 146,307 Twitter followers and 1.45 million “likes” on Facebook. Welcome to winter in Arizona. No matter where you’re visiting from, we’re glad to have you. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or simply enjoy this time of year, we wish you a very joyous Holiday Season and extend our best wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

TALIESIN WEST: ARCHITECTURE INSPIRED BY THE DESERT

T

aliesin West, Scottsdale’s architectural, cultural and historic masterpiece, was designed and built from 1937-1959 by America’s greatest architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. Taliesin West served as Wright’s winter home and drafting studio then and now offers some of the Valley’s best tours.

Scottsdale’s only National Historic Landmark is set on a 491-acre Sonoran Desert preserve. Taking his principles west, Taliesin West provides a prime example of Wright’s Organic Architecture as its structures are built of the rocks and sand of the desert and melds to the McDowell 18

Mountain foothills. Wright drew inspiration from the abstract forms of the majestic saguaro cactus and sharp, clear lines of the mountains against Arizona’s vivid sky, integrating his living and working spaces within the landscape in magical ways. Today, visitors may draw from that same Arizona KEYMagazine

inspiration by experiencing a variety of tours outlining the colorful history of Taliesin West and that of its creator. Guided tours range from one to three hours and are offered every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. The 60-minute Panorama Tour visits Wright’s Office, Cabaret Theater, and Kiva while strolling through the site. Taliesin West’s signature Insights Tour visits all the locations of the Panorama Tour plus makes special trips into the Wrights’ private quarters and living room— the gracious “Garden Room.” For more in-depth visits, try the Extended Insights Tour or the combo Desert/Insights Tour, which explores how Nature inspired Wright’s design of his desert complex. The School of Architecture’s students lead dynamic Desert “Shelter” Tours on Saturday afternoons. Romantic Night Lights Tours are offered Thanksgiving weekend and December 26-30. An ideal place to find an Arizona keepsake, Anneliese’s Bookstore at Taliesin West features an immense collection of WrightFor more information call 888-516-0811 or inspired items and books. www.franklloydwright.org To make your tour reservation, please call Enter Taliesin West at the intersection of Cactus Road and Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd. 888-516-0811 or visit (approximately 114th St.) in northeast Scottsdale. Grand Canyon The

“The Grand Canyon fills me with awe. It is beyond comparison--beyond description; absolutely unparalleled throughout the wide world .... Let this great wonder of nature remain as it now is. Do nothing to mar its grandeur, sublimity and loveliness. You cannot improve on it. But what you can do is to keep it for your children, your children’s children, and all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American should see.”
— President Theodore Roosevelt ENJOYING THE SOUTH RIM Individual interests, available time, weather, and health considerations can influence your visit to the South Rim. Use the information available on the web site, www.nps.gov/grca/, to help plan your visit. Once you arrive in the park, read The Guide and talk with the rangers for up-to-the-minute information. Elevations along the rim vary from 6650 feet (2030 m) at Hermits Rest to more than 7400 feet (2260 m) at Desert View near the East Entrance. Summer temperatures are pleasant along the rim, but increase rapidly as you descend into the canyon. Low humidity makes for big temperature differences between day and night. The low humidity and high elevation also means that it is important to drink water frequently. Afternoon thundershowers are common in July, August, and early September. Windy conditions prevail in April and May. Snow may fall as early as November. Winter snowstorms continue into March. Many miles of roads along the rim feature numerous pullouts to enjoy the views. Hermit Road to Hermit Rest is open to private vehicles only from December through February. The free shuttle bus system provides a worryfree way to explore the developed areas of the rim. 70

The Rim Trail winds along the rim for more than 13 miles (21 km), much of it paved and suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. The Greenway, a broad, paved pathway suitable for hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, leads two miles (3 km) from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Grand Canyon Village. A separate segment heads east from Hermits Rest along the rim. The Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend steeply into the canyon. Rangers present programs—walks, talks, and evening presentations—throughout the year. All activities are free. Check in The Guide for programs during your stay. VISITOR CENTERS The National Park Service staffs several visitor centers on the South Rim. All are open every day of the year; hours vary seasonally. Grand Canyon Visitor Center Located near Mather Point The largest visitor center on the South Rim is a good stop for an introduction to Grand Canyon and for assistance in planning your visit.

Arizona Visitors Ask…? BY JOHNNY FENTON, M.A. CONCIERGE, OMNI TUCSON NATIONAL RESORT

Q. What are the top spots in Arizona that we should put on our “bucket list” for 2015? A. It’s obvious Homer Simpson hasn’t visited Arizona when you learn that his list starts with “a bucket of chicken and a bucket of popcorn.” But I would add to a recent list in USA Today with the following suggestions: Get off the grid and visit the Grand Canyon (because broadband connections are rare at the South Rim in Northern Arizona) where there is no bad place to capture an iconic picture—especially at sunrise or sunset. Take a concierge’s word, your money will be well-spent to stroll over to the IMAX just outside the park entrance to take in “The Grand Canyon—Hidden Secrets.” Here is the one way to experience on a 6-story screen, a mule ride, a helicopter fly-over and a white-water river rafting experience at the Grand Canyon in the space of one hour! If you are at the rim during a full moon, the stroll here reveals a dim glow off the upper cliffs and an occasional flicker from camper’s flashlights below. www.nps.gov/grca. John Wayne movies of cattle drives and such classic films as Stagecoach, Easy Rider, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Back to the Future, and Forest Gump filmed at this spot don’t fully capture the majesty of Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. Here you are on a magnificent portion of the largest Native American Reservation in the U.S. The Navajos offer guided jeep and horseback tours. But if you have limited time and funds, $20 will give you access to a 17-mile scenic drive where more than 340 scenic spots are awaiting your wonderment. Favorite photo stops are the Two Mittens and Spider Rock. www.navajonationparks.org Two must-sees in Central Arizona will have to include Sedona for its visual concert of red rock formations that will spoil you for your lifetime of forays into other lands of “sky islands.” If you’ve never taken a jeep tour, you’re in the sweet spot for such a bucket list splurge. You’re guaranteed to be swept away on a Pink Jeep Tour into the core of all the stirring history and mythology of the Old West. My favorite is their Broken Arrow Tour. (928) 203-7021. And while here in December with the family, plan your visit to include a stroll through Tinsel Town at Posse Grounds Park every Thursday through Sunday for dancing light displays, toboggan rides, live music and chats with Santa. (928) 282-7098. My pick for America’s Best Hometown Christmas is in Prescott. It passes all the tests: a quaint downtown Courthouse Square lit with imaginative holiday lights, an area committed to adult refreshments known as Whisky Row, one of a “Dozen Distinctive Destinations” according to the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the territorial capital of Arizona. www.visit-prescott.com

Particularly fascinating to our foreign travelers who are beguiled by the mix of history and myth of the Old West is a pilgrimage to Tombstone in Southern Arizona where the1880s are frozen in time. Here the tough-looking men swagger about in dusters and handlebar mustaches. The frontier facades are largely original but the souvenir garters, T-shirts, mugs and refrigerator magnets are not. Oddly enough, Tombstone is home to “the world’s largest rose bush” which won’t be in bloom this month—but good to know in a trivia contest. Don’t miss a trip to Boot Hill Cemetery where those not “Too Tough to Die” are buried. It will complete your visit to take in the Gunfight at the OK Corral reenactment, the tattered Bird Cage Theater/Museum, a former concert hall and brothel and a burger at Big Nose Kate’s for the shear entertainment and good grub. www.tombstoneweb.com. Just nine miles south of Benson, Arizona is the magnificent Kartchner Caverns within the Kartchner Caverns State Park where you can marvel at one of the world’s richest caves in terms of varied formations during an 90-minute tour of either the Rotunda/Throne Tour where the largest ice column in the state, the “Kubla Khan” is on display or the Big Room Tour and the Helmet Headlamp Specialty Tours are offered for the more adventurous. The cave is comprised of 13,000 feet of passages and two chambers as long as football fields and includes the longest soda straw stalactite in the U.S. at 21 feet! The park is open daily. Reservations are strongly recommended (520) 586-2283. www.AZStateParks.com AZ

prescott: ARIZONA’S CHRISTMAS CITY

I

f you are having a hard time getting into the Christmas Spirit in the Metro Phoenix/Scottsdale area while enjoying warm sunny days and surrounded by cactus, then maybe you should consider a short trip to “Arizona’s Christmas City”, Prescott, AZ. Located just 90 minutes north of the Phoenix area, Prescott is surrounded by the 1.2 million acres of the Prescott National Forest. Downtown Prescott boasts over 700 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, providing a warm, “hometown” ambience. Prescott’s beautiful, tree-lined Courthouse Plaza is the heart and soul of the city and venue for many events throughout the year. Prescott was named “Arizona Christmas City” by Governor Rose Mofford in 1989, in recognition of the community’s dedication to the Christmas spirit which is perhaps best exemplified by the annual Courthouse Lighting Ceremony, which has been celebrated for the past 60 years. Over 100 trees in the park-like Courthouse Plaza have been decorated with colorful holiday lights, along with the iconic Yavapai County Courthouse. This year the lights will be turned on Saturday, December 5th. The celebration begins at 4pm with children’s choirs from around the Prescott area and followed by a reading of the “Christmas Story” by Prescott native and Secretary of State, Ken Bennett. Earlier that day from 1 to 3pm the traditional Christmas Parade takes place in downtown Prescott with many residents and businesses participating in what will be the 33rd annual Christmas Parade. From November 21st to January 1st the Prescott Resort hosts the “World’s Largest Gingerbread Village”. Another very popular Christmas event is the “Acker Musical Showcase” taking place on December 11th. Over 100 local shops and businesses More information on these host musical groups of all genres performing for several hours and other events are available at: throughout the downtown area. On December 31st, ring in 2016 visit-prescott.com with the New Year’s Eve Boot Drop at 10pm and midnight! AZ ArizonaKEY.com
