publisher’spage SEARCHING FOR SNOW IN ARIZONA The Grand Canyon shows its beautiful, moody side this time of year. Under a blanket of snow, she lays very still. This quietude typifies the canyon in winter and allows one to experience her grandeur as if transported back in time. During winter the air is crisp and the views are sharp. Package a number of Arizona joys into one experience… head to Williams and take the Grand Canyon Railway up to this natural wonder of the world for the day. Feeling adventuresome? The Grand Canyon’s West Rim allows visitors to experience this Seventh Natural Wonder by air, water and sky. Located on the Hualapai Indian reservation, immersed in natural beauty and authentic Native American culture, this is the location for the World Famous Grand Canyon Skywalk (middle), a glass-floored, horseshoe-shaped suspension bridge 4,000 feet above the Canyon’s floor. Built by the Hualapai Nation in 2007, this unique vantage point beyond the Canyon’s walls feels like walking among the clouds.
HERE COMES SANTA
Mount Lemmon is in the Santa Catalina Mountains located in the Coronado National Forest north of Tucson. It is 9,157 feet above sealevel, and receives approximately 180 inches of snow annually. The drive up the beautiful Catalina Highway traverses four completely different ecological strata. From saguaro cactus at the bottom, to the pine and aspen groves at the top, the drive is breathtaking. During this time of year, you can leave the warm Tucson climate, go skiing or sledding for the day, and be back in the desert before dark! The White Mountains along the Arizona - New Mexico border are the state’s second highest range. Pinetop-Lakeside and Springerville-Eagar along the northern edge of the range provide the most popular access points. Take a trip to the White Mountains and experience a real Arizona winter. Ski, tube or sled down snow-covered hills and then get warm by a fire. Located 220 miles east of Phoenix and 250 miles north of Tucson, this recreational winter wonderland is not to be missed. North of Flagstaff at 12,643 feet, the San Francisco Peaks (bottom) is not only the dominant feature of the forest area known as the Volcanic Highlands, it’s also the highest mountain in Arizona. Three of the summits that ring this dormant volcano’s now quiet inner caldera are higher than any other mountain in the state. This mountain is sacred to the native peoples that live in the area and its soaring profile set against a blue Arizona sky serves as a source of awe to visitors. Hiking, sightseeing, wildlife watching and skiing are the predominant recreation activities enjoyed in this land of mountains, forests and lava flows. Welcome to winter in Arizona. No matter where you’re visiting from, we’re glad to have you. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or simply enjoy this time of year, we wish you a very joyous Holiday Season and extend our best wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s
TALIESIN WEST: ARCHITECTURE INSPIRED BY THE DESERT
T
aliesin West, Scottsdale’s architectural, cultural and historic masterpiece, was designed and built from 1937-1959 by America’s greatest architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. Taliesin West served as Wright’s winter home and drafting studio then, and now offers some of the Valley’s best tours and cultural events.
Scottsdale’s only National Historic Landmark is set on a 491-acre Sonoran Desert preserve, a treasure at the foothills of the McDowell mountains. Taking his principles west, Taliesin West provides a prime example of Wright’s Organic Architecture as it was built of the rocks and sand of the desert, diligently handcrafted 18
over many years almost entirely by the famous architect and his apprentices. Wright drew inspiration from the abstract forms of the majestic saguaro cactus and sharp, clear lines of the mountains against Arizona’s vivid sky, integrating his living and working spaces within the landscape in magical ways.
Arizona KEYMagazine
Today, visitors may draw from that same inspiration by experiencing a variety of tours outlining the colorful history of Taliesin West and that of its creator. Guided tours range from one to three hours and are offered every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. The 60-minute Panorama Tour visits Wright’s Office, Cabaret Theater, and Kiva while strolling through the site. Taliesin West’s signature Insights Tour visits all the locations of the Panorama Tour plus makes special trips into the Wrights’ private quarters and living room—the gracious “Garden Room.” New offerings include the Private Collections tour, a behind the scenes look into the collection vault for an exclsuvie view of works from Wright’s personal art collection and the Garden Walk tour, a stroll through the gardens, terraces and walkways of Taliesin West. For more in-depth visits, try the Extended Insights Tour or the combination Desert/Insights Tour, which explores how Nature inspired Wright’s design of his desert complex. The School of Architecture’s students lead dynamic Desert “Shelter” Tours on Saturday afternoons. Night Lights Tours are also offered Thanksgiving weekend and December 26-30, with several nights featuring holiday carollers. An ideal place to find an Arizona keepsake, Anneliese’s Bookstore at Taliesin West features an immense collection of Wright inspired items and books. Sedona and North Central Arizona
V
aried and vibrant aptly describe the north central region. The famous Red Rocks of Sedona. The bar where Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday drank whiskey. The mining town carved on a hillside. With four seasons and something for everyone, this region begs to be seen and will not soon be forgotten.
POPULAR DESTINATIONS INCLUDE: Sedona – Often called “Red Rock Country” Sedona is a four seasons playground for everyone – whether you’re into history and archaeology; arts and culture; power shopping; outdoor sports; or the spiritual and metaphysical, imagine doing all this in a backdrop of some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Indeed, this picturesque city is surrounded by red-rock monoliths named Coffeepot, Cathedral and Thunder Mountain. At the north end of the city is the stunning Oak Creek Canyon, a breathtaking chasm that even today, is wildly wonderful. 800-288-7336 Prescott – Just 90 minutes north of Phoenix, “Everybody’s Hometown” is an ideal destination for golfers, outdoor adventure seekers, and western history buffs. From its majestic rock formations at Granite Dells to five area lakes to more than 450 miles of wellgroomed hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, Prescott knows no boundaries for exploring the area’s stunning natural beauty. The downtown Courthouse Plaza is Prescott’s historic heart. The plaza is bordered by the famous Whiskey Row, known to have hosted the likes of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday--and still hosts eclectic boutiques, galleries, antique shops, and restaurants. 800-266-7534 Jerome – After the mines closed in 1953 and “King Copper” left town, the population went from a peak of 15,000 in the 1920s to a low of 50 people. The Jerome Historical Society guarded the buildings against vandalism and the elements, the Douglas Mansion became a

State Park in 1965, and Jerome became a National Historic Landmark in 1976. During the 60’s and 70’s, Jerome offered a haven for artists. Soon newcomers and Jerome old timers were working together to bring Jerome back to life. Today, Jerome is very much alive with writers, artists, artisans, musicians, historians, and families. 928-634-2900 AZ

Grand Canyon The
“The Grand Canyon fills me with awe. It is beyond comparison--beyond description; absolutely unparalleled throughout the wide world .... Let this great wonder of nature remain as it now is. Do nothing to mar its grandeur, sublimity and loveliness. You cannot improve on it. But what you can do is to keep it for your children, your children’s children, and all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American should see.” — President Theodore Roosevelt ENJOYING THE SOUTH RIM Individual interests, available time, weather, and health considerations can influence your visit to the South Rim. Use the information available on the web site, www.nps.gov/grca/, to help plan your visit. Once you arrive in the park, read The Guide and talk with the rangers for up-to-the-minute information. Elevations along the rim vary from 6650 feet (2030 m) at Hermits Rest to more than 7400 feet (2260 m) at Desert View near the East Entrance. Summer temperatures are pleasant along the rim, but increase rapidly as you descend into the canyon. Low humidity makes for big temperature differences between day and night. The low humidity and high elevation also means that it is important to drink water frequently. Afternoon thundershowers are common in July, August, and early September. Windy conditions prevail in April and May. Snow may fall as early as November. Winter snowstorms continue into March. Many miles of roads along the rim feature numerous pullouts to enjoy the views. Hermit Road to Hermit Rest is open to private vehicles only from December through February. The free shuttle bus system provides a worryfree way to explore the developed areas of the rim. 70
The Rim Trail winds along the rim for more than 13 miles (21 km), much of it paved and suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. The Greenway, a broad, paved pathway suitable for hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, leads two miles (3 km) from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Grand Canyon Village. A separate segment heads east from Hermits Rest along the rim. The Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend steeply into the canyon. Rangers present programs—walks, talks, and evening presentations—throughout the year. All activities are free. Check in The Guide for programs during your stay. VISITOR CENTERS The National Park Service staffs several visitor centers on the South Rim. All are open every day of the year; hours vary seasonally. Grand Canyon Visitor Center Located near Mather Point The largest visitor center on the South Rim is a good stop for an introduction to Grand Canyon and for assistance in planning your visit.

Q. Cramming gifts into suitcases is a no-win for holiday travelers, so what are some creative fun finds we can pick up right here that will have a “ wow factor” for our Arizona family and friends? A. It seems like you just finished off the last of the Thanksgiving leftovers from the fridge while listening to Frank Sinatra crooning “Autumn in New York”— and here it is time to tumble off a plane into the arms of adult children, in-laws, parents or pals ready to take on somebody’s version of winter wonderland in the Southwest! Your big brother told Santa “If somebody wants a little brother, they can have mine” and you never quite got over it. But this year you’re going to get over it and give him the best Christmas gift a sibling could ever give—a gift certificate to AZ Man Cave! The AZ Man Cave in north Phoenix is one of Arizona’s most original shopping experiences. They sell new and old items for guys (and some sisters too.) You can find things to decorate his office, sports room, basement or garage. They have Beer Signs, tools, model cars, posters, camping equipment, albums and music memorabilia. One of my favorite finds was a pillow printed with this sentiment “We interrupt this marriage to bring you a football game!” www.azmancave.blogspot.com For life-long enthusiasts of all things unique Curious Nature also in Central Arizona is a science and natural history emporium for all things strange from ethically sourced taxidermy, skulls and bones and an ever-changing assortment of specimens and oddities including classes in entomology—perfect for that brainy grandson! www.curiousnatureshop.com Fittingly, if your visit includes a stop at the Grand Canyon or a ramble down America’s first national highway, Route 66 in Northwestern Arizona, stop in at the Powerhouse Visitors Center (1907) in Kingman and you’ll think you hit the motherlode of one-stop-shop experiences while you take in the mining history of this territory as you wander through the Route 66 Museum and the Visitors Center’s three gift shops. The Hualapai Shop features Native pottery, silver, locally-mined stones and horsehair jewelry as well as tribal crafts and Indian Fry Bread. The Route 66 Shop offers memorabilia of the 1930’s-era travelers along this route and the Arizona Shop features our state’s vast array of local products from coffee table books of the Grand Canyon Railway and its scenic wonders, the state’s vineyards, pecan, date and olive groves, apple orchards, chili farms, cotton fields, tee shirts, Swarovski Crystal ornaments depicting our natural wonders, and (my favorite find) Grand Canyon Breakfast Blend—Blind Dog Coffee! And if there are any antique enthusiasts in your bunch, then don’t miss

a stop along Beale Street where you might peek into a few of the many offerings like the Time Was Antique Store, Boston Antique Shop or Kettlehut’s and score an old railway sign or a branding iron! www.gokingman.com A unique scene awaits an adventurous shopper who meanders into The Metal Arts Village in mid-town Tucson, Southern Arizona’s premier “collaboratory” of metal artists and select artisans in classic oil painting, wood and stone sculpture, stained glass and bead therapy as realized in the international headquarters of Beads of Courage (a non-profit that provides arts-in-medicine support for children coping with serious illness.) How about the gift of oil painting or drawing classes by celebrated classic artist Betina Fink for your aunt or an appointment for your niece with Lisa Contreras of Haunted Hands, voted Tucson’s Best Tattoo Artist! At least discuss the prospects over a cold one at the Hop Shop craft beer garden in this charming studio scene with a singular vibe in this little university town. You might meet the Village entrepreneur here, a Tucson native, attorney and “metal head” Steve Kimble—on a break from Art Inc. in his Studio F. And on December 14, the Full Moon Open Studio Tour here gives you the fun factor of some local live music, food truck treats and artists in action. www.metalartsvillage.com And (maybe) best of all—when you make your shopping a shared event—no gift wrapping is required!
