now in Arizona? Surely you jest? Here’s a quick guide for those craving some of the white stuff!

Mount Lemmon is in the Santa Catalina Mountains located in the Coronado National Forest north of Tucson. It is 9,157 feet above sea-level, and receives approximately 180 inches of snow annually. The drive up the beautiful Catalina Highway traverses four completely different ecological strata. From saguaro cactus at the bottom, to the pine and aspen groves at the top, the drive is breathtaking. During this time of year, you can leave the warm Tucson climate, go skiing or sledding for the day, and be back in the desert before dark!

The White Mountains along the Arizona - New Mexico border are the state’s second highest range. Pinetop-Lakeside and Springerville-Eagar along the northern edge of the range provide the most popular access points. Take a trip to the White Mountains and experience a real Arizona winter. Ski, tube or sled down snowcovered hills and then get warm by a fire. Located 220 miles east of Phoenix and 250 miles north of Tucson, this recreational winter wonderland is not to be missed.

North of Flagstaff at 12,643 feet, the San Francisco Peaks is not only the dominant feature of the forest area known as the Volcanic Highlands, it’s also the highest mountain in Arizona. Three of the summits that ring this dormant volcano’s now quiet inner caldera are higher than any other mountain in the state. This mountain is sacred to the native peoples that live in the area and its soaring profile set against a blue Arizona sky serves as a source of awe to visitors. Hiking, sightseeing, wildlife watching and skiing are the predominant recreation activities enjoyed in this land of mountains, forests and lava flows.

The Grand Canyon shows its beautiful, moody side this time of year.

Under a blanket of snow, she lays very still. This quietude typifies the canyon in winter and allows one to experience her grandeur as if transported back in time. During winter the air is crisp and the views are sharp. Package a number of Arizona joys into one experience… head to Williams and take the Grand Canyon Railway up to this natural wonder of the world for the day. The Grand Canyon will not disappoint. AZ

PGA Tour golf returns to the Valley of the Sun for the 81st playing of the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Presented by The Ak-Chin Indian Community, the tournament tees up February 1st through the 7th at TPC Scottsdale. Last year 24-year-old Brooks Koepka earned his first career PGA TOUR win and capped off an awesome 2015 event that saw record breaking single-day crowds on Wednesday (75,380) and Thursday (118,461), as well as snapping the weeklong attendance record with 564,368 enthusiastic fans flocking to TPC Scottsdale throughout the week.

The Arizona Renaissance Festival begins this month and is open Saturdays & Sundays, February 6 - March 27, plus Presidents’ Day Monday February 15 from 10am to 6pm - Rain or Shine. This Festival transports visitors to an European style fair filled with an agreeable rabble of knights, rogues, royalty and craftsmen, all roaming throughout a 30-acre village filled with delectable sights and sounds tantalizing the senses. All the Festival is a stage with a cast featuring more than 2,000 brightly costumed actors, dancers, mermaids, acrobats and musicians.

Explore 200 charming craft shops, 13 stages of non-stop entertainment, an arena for full-contact armored jousting, a living fountain, kitchens, pubs, and people powered games and rides. See our spotlight article on page 81 for more information.

The Arizona Fine Art EXPO runs through April 3rd at 26504 N. Scottsdale Road from 10am-6pm. The EXPO unites an impressive gathering of 100 nationally acclaimed and award-winning artists that passionately produce art in studios and cabanas. Highlighting this year’s festival will be a screening of American Graffiti and a reunion of actors, hosted by Mackenzie Phillips (Carol) and Cindy Williams (Laurie), and featuring Beau Genry (Ants) and Candy Clark (Debbie), among others; James Franco’s new film, Memoria with Sam Dillon, Thomas Mann and Franco; Mike Farrell (M*A*S*H) in his one-man global-warming themed show, Dr. Keeling’s Curve, introduced by his wife, Shelley Fabares (Coach, The Donna Reed Show); a performance by Roslyn Kind; and Gene Kelly: The Legacy featuring his wife, Patricia Ward Kelly.

Use the information available on the web site, www.nps.gov/grca/, to help plan your visit. Once you arrive in the park, read The Guide and talk with the rangers for up-to-the-minute information.

Elevations along the rim vary from 6650 feet (2030 m) at Hermits Rest to more than 7400 feet (2260 m) at Desert View near the East Entrance. Summer temperatures are pleasant along the rim, but increase rapidly as you descend into the canyon. Low humidity makes for big temperature differences between day and night.

The low humidity and high elevation also means that it is important to drink water frequently.

Afternoon thundershowers are common in July, August, and early September. Windy conditions prevail in April and May. Snow may fall as early as November. Winter snowstorms continue into March.

Many miles of roads along the rim feature numerous pullouts to enjoy the views. Hermit Road to Hermit Rest is open to private vehicles only from December through February. The free shuttle bus system provides a worryfree way to explore the developed areas of the rim.

The Rim Trail winds along the rim for more than 13 miles (21 km), much of it paved and suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. The Greenway, a broad, paved pathway suitable for hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, leads two miles (3 km) from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Grand Canyon Village. A separate segment heads east from Hermits Rest along the rim. The Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend steeply into the canyon.

Rangers present programs—walks, talks, and evening presentations—throughout the year. All activities are free. Check in The Guide for programs during your stay.

VISITOR CENTERS The National Park Service staffs several visitor centers on the South Rim. All are open every day of the year; hours vary seasonally.

Grand Canyon Visitor Center Located near Mather Point The largest visitor center on the South Rim is a good stop for an introduction to Grand Canyon and for assistance in planning your visit.

Q. We’re curious about historic and under-the-radar saloons / bars in this area?

A. The conversation at a compelling art exhibit I attended of Dust Bowl photography captioned “The Dirty Thirties” at the Tucson Desert Art Museum, turned to a recent urban trend of the speakeasy revival around that same period. The Prohibition Era (1920-1933), when government outlawed the sale of liquor in the 18th Amendment to our Constitution, spawned a surge in hard-to-find bars operating out of alleys, cellars and requiring passwords for entry.

I stepped through a sliding door disguised as a “ bookcase” in Vero Amore, a Tucson restaurant, to find myself in a small black-out-curtained bar where vintage tunes crackled from a Victrola record player, but only after I texted a number I found on a wooden coin marked “The Still.” The bar maid explained some of the vintage drinks to the packed room of 20 or so patrons in this Southern Arizona hot spot. The Old Fashioned, as an example, is a mixture of sugar, bitters and whisky with a slice of an orange and a cherry.

The fruit made it “a health drink” if the bar got raided by the long arm of the law. Another guest favorite is the dimly lit “Tough Luck Club” located in an old morgue in the basement of Reilly’s, a former mortuary. This now chic restaurant (retaining its vaulted Gothic ceilings and original chandeliers) features gourmet artisanal pizzas, locally crafted beers and a pastry chef who lives to amaze the patrons.

In Central Arizona mixologists tell us the attraction of this kind of enterprise can include an aura of exclusivity, adventure, mystery and nostalgia. The source of this may come from the location, the ambience and the cleverness required to process this pursuit. Themed drinks sport names like “The Sound of Silence” and “Knock Twice” at some of these Sh-h-h-h spots trying hard not to get noticed. For the royal road to the Roaring 20s drop in at the Arizona Biltmore’s Mystery Room restored and enclosed in original Biltmore Blocks like a cave canopied with its gleaming gold leaf ceiling with the re-creation of the legendary resort’s original “Mystery Room,” the secret speakeasy that was hidden in the resort’s main building. When the hotel opened in 1929 in Phoenix during Prohibition, the Mystery Room boasted a well-stocked liquor cabinet that conveniently converted into a bookcase in the event of a raid – with a high-powered spotlight mounted on the roof to watch for patrol cars. The era’s fun times are relived in a signature setting of the ‘20s defined by the distinctive architectural style of Frank Lloyd Wright. The speakeasy comes to life 8-11 p.m.

one Sunday a month with a bartender in period attire and music and cocktails from the Prohibition years. Admission is free, drinks are pricey and like the security measure employed at Roaring ‘20s speakeasies, a password or cryptic phrase is required. Say something like “I have the missing eye to the blind tiger.” You can also search #speakeasy on Twitter for the password (the resort tweets a clue weekly from @ArizonaBiltmore) or call 602-955-6600. Then take the time to find Kazimierz in Scottsdale for great live entertainment and creativity munchies at this gem of a secret wine bar. There is no sign on the door just the message “The truth is inside.” Look for some guidance at Cowboy Ciao’s on Stetson Drive (480) 946-3111.

Arizona’s longstanding love affair with bars and saloons flourished first in the mining boom towns that have streets captioned Whisky Row and Brewery Gulch. The oldest family-owned bar in the state is located in Northern Arizona. Paul and Jerry’s in Jerome was originally built in 1899 to replace the original structure destroyed in a fire. It operated as the Senate Saloon with a Chinese restaurant downstairs and was converted to a billiard parlor with a speakeasy in the basement during the Prohibition era. Owner Paul Vojnic bought the building from the Jerome Historical Society in 1939. 923-634-2603. The Faire features demonstrations of time honored crafts such as weaving, jewelry making, glass blowing, blacksmithing and pottery throwing. Shopping is fun and if you are looking for a unique gift; you shall surely find it at this bustling marketplace.

A most special event within this giant event is The Pleasure Feast. This is a one and a half hour, five course medieval feast with live music and comedy entertainment, delicious food, plus festival souvenir. With limited seating twice daily, advance feast reservations are recommended.
