A
ttention Snow Lovers... Arizona has plenty of the white, fluffy stuff! This seems to shock many people. But in fact, we do get snow and Flagstaff is one of the best places to enjoy winter activities. Whether you’re looking to ski, snowboard, sled, build a snowman, or make snow angels, a trip up north must be on your itinerary. For those who wish to ski and snowboard, the Arizona Snowbowl is located fourteen miles outside of Flagstaff, Arizona on the San Francisco Peaks. The resort is open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM every day. This ski and snowboard paradise boasts 40 different runs, all of varying difficulty. The ski resort receives about 260 inches of snowfall every year. There are six lifts at the park: four traditional, arial lifts, and two surface level conveyer belts. The usual season (how long one can ski/snowboard at the park) is from mid-December to mid-April. The base elevation at Snowbowl is 9,200 feet and the highest summit reaches 1,500 feet! Arizona Snowbowl has a ski and snowboard school for people of all ages. www.arizonasnowbowl.com Wiing Mountain Snow Play Area is the place to be if you love to go sledding or simply enjoy the snow. Wing Mountain Snow Play Area is set on about 40 acres composed of natural cinder hills in Coconino National Forest that make for GREAT sledding. On top of sledding there is also plenty of space to build a snowman and make snow angels! Only plastic sleds and tubes are allowed for safety reasons. Snow conditions aree updated on the Wing Mountain Snow Play Area Facebook page at www.facebook. com/WingMountain/. Wing Mountain may close suddenly due to reaching maximum capacity. When vehicle capacity is reached, the gates are closed without advanced notice. You may find other sledding and snow play opportunities at Crowley Pit at mile marker 233 or Fort Tuthill County Park, located at exit 337 on I-17 before Flagstaff. Wing Mountain Snow Play Area sells sleds on site, however bringing your own is highly recommended. Food and drink vendors are setup at Wing Mountain on weekends and Porta John restrooms are available. snowplayaz.com Regardless of which Snowy Adventure you choose, be sure to dress appropriately for extreme winter conditions by wearing warm hats, gloves, shoes, coat, etc. And remember, hydration is key at high elevations. See you on the slopes! AZ

publisher’spage HAPPY NEW YEAR
Welcome to January in Arizona, a time and place that offers something for everyone. If you’re visiting from the Midwest, Northeast, Canada, or other parts cold, snowy, and gloomy, then metro Phoenix and Tucson offer you blue skies, sunshine, heated swimming pools, nature trails, gorgeous sunrises and sunsets, and tall, cool drinks. If you’re still in the Holiday Spirit and need a fix of snow and winter activities, then Northern Arizona can help. The scenic cities of Prescott and Sedona may have a light dusting on the distant mountains and red rocks, while skiers, snowboarders, and sledders will find plenty of the white stuff in Flagstaff. The Grand Canyon in winter is stunning - get there if you can.

H
ot Air Expeditions and the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM), two of Arizona’s most popular attractions, have collaborated to offer a spectacular fun-filled package, appropriately named Balloons & Tunes! Your half-day excursion begins at sunrise with the hot air ballooning experience of a lifetime from Hot Air Expeditions, where you are treated to soaring over the stunning Sonoran Desert for your 60-90 minute flight. While in flight, your FAA-certified pilot navigates the winds to provide you with one-of-a-kind breathtaking views of Arizona from a variety of altitudes. You will float from within feet of the ground, viewing local wildlife and plant life that are out for the day, as well as up to 5,000 feet in the air for a stunning overview of the valley. Upon landing, a lovely table complete with linens and china awaits you in the heart of the desert for your scrumptiously prepared champagne breakfast catered by the award-winning Vincent’s on Camelback Restaurant. The presentation of commemorative flight certificates caps off the morning ballooning experience, providing guests with a piece of the adventure that just ensued. After your ballooning experience, guests are shuttled from the desert to the #1 TripAdvisor Attraction in Phoenix, the Musical Instrument Museum, where the second part of your adventurous day begins. With vouchers for admission and lunch in tow, guests embark on a musical journey using wireless technology for a self-guided tour that is entertaining, interactive, and engaging. MIM showcases over 6,500 instruments and objects from 200 countries and territories, and with the audio and video segments, you will hear, see, and feel the creative spirit of the musicians as they play their instruments. Within the museum, there are exhibits that pay tribute to musicians who have touched the lives of many, and feature an expansive collection of instruments from famous performers such as Maroon 5, Taylor Swift, Elvis Presley, and more in the Artist Gallery. The Experience Gallery is another can’t miss stop at MIM where you can play unique instruments from around the world. Wrap the day up with lunch in MIM’s award-winning Café Allegro, which serves a menu of great-tasting global and local foods prepared daily, using fresh ingredients, followed by return transfers. Sedona and North Central Arizona
V
aried and vibrant aptly describe the north central region. The famous Red Rocks of Sedona. The bar where Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday drank whiskey. The mining town carved on a hillside. With four seasons and something for everyone, this region begs to be seen and will not soon be forgotten.
POPULAR DESTINATIONS INCLUDE: Sedona – Often called “Red Rock Country” Sedona is a four seasons playground for everyone – whether you’re into history and archaeology; arts and culture; power shopping; outdoor sports; or the spiritual and metaphysical, imagine doing all this in a backdrop of some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Indeed, this picturesque city is surrounded by red-rock monoliths named Coffeepot, Cathedral and Thunder Mountain. At the north end of the city is the stunning Oak Creek Canyon, a breathtaking chasm that even today, is wildly wonderful. 800-288-7336 Prescott – Just 90 minutes north of Phoenix, “Everybody’s Hometown” is an ideal destination for golfers, outdoor adventure seekers, and western history buffs. From its majestic rock formations at Granite Dells to five area lakes to more than 450 miles of well-groomed hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, Prescott knows no boundaries for exploring the area’s stunning natural beauty. The downtown Courthouse Plaza is Prescott’s historic heart. The plaza is bordered by the famous Whiskey Row, known to have hosted the likes of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday--and still hosts eclectic boutiques, galleries, antique shops, and restaurants. 800-266-7534 Cottonwood & Verde Valley – Located in the “heart” of Arizona, the Verde Valley is ideally situated above the heat of the desert and below the cold of Arizona’s high country. With its state parks, historic sites and enticing attractions, the Verde Valley offers activities for all ages. There is an assortment of hotels, RV Parks, campgrounds and restaurants to choose from, all within close proximity to the parks, at-

Scenic beauty and recreational opportunities will thrill the adventurer, and the many fine shops and galleries located in Old Town, Clarkdale, Camp Verde, Sedona, Cornville and Jerome will easily appeal to the shoppers. 928-634-7593 AZ

Grand Canyon The
“The Grand Canyon fills me with awe. It is beyond comparison--beyond description; absolutely unparalleled throughout the wide world .... Let this great wonder of nature remain as it now is. Do nothing to mar its grandeur, sublimity and loveliness. You cannot improve on it. But what you can do is to keep it for your children, your children’s children, and all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American should see.” — President Theodore Roosevelt ENJOYING THE SOUTH RIM Individual interests, available time, weather, and health considerations can influence your visit to the South Rim. Use the information available on the web site, www.nps.gov/grca/, to help plan your visit. Once you arrive in the park, read The Guide and talk with the rangers for up-to-the-minute information. Elevations along the rim vary from 6650 feet (2030 m) at Hermits Rest to more than 7400 feet (2260 m) at Desert View near the East Entrance. Summer temperatures are pleasant along the rim, but increase rapidly as you descend into the canyon. Low humidity makes for big temperature differences between day and night. The low humidity and high elevation also means that it is important to drink water frequently. Afternoon thundershowers are common in July, August, and early September. Windy conditions prevail in April and May. Snow may fall as early as November. Winter snowstorms continue into March. Many miles of roads along the rim feature numerous pullouts to enjoy the views. Hermit Road to Hermit Rest is open to private vehicles only from December through February. The free shuttle bus system provides a worryfree way to explore the developed areas of the rim. 70
The Rim Trail winds along the rim for more than 13 miles (21 km), much of it paved and suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. The Greenway, a broad, paved pathway suitable for hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, leads two miles (3 km) from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Grand Canyon Village. A separate segment heads east from Hermits Rest along the rim. The Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend steeply into the canyon. Rangers present programs—walks, talks, and evening presentations—throughout the year. All activities are free. Check in The Guide for programs during your stay. VISITOR CENTERS The National Park Service staffs several visitor centers on the South Rim. All are open every day of the year; hours vary seasonally. Grand Canyon Visitor Center Located near Mather Point The largest visitor center on the South Rim is a good stop for an introduction to Grand Canyon and for assistance in planning your visit.

corner Arizona Visitors Ask…? BY JOHNNY FENTON, M.A. CONCIERGE, OMNI TUCSON NATIONAL RESORT
Q. How can we learn some of the interesting history and myths of the Southwest in a short visit to Arizona? A. Some say the universe is made up of stories, not atoms. Stories are how we learn. They are the currency of human contact—what defines a region. Often our guests become full or part time residents and along the way, ask us to be lifestyle coaches imparting a sense of place as a partial determinant in their decision to relocate here. Others have only a short visit in which they wish to get the “thumbprint” of the area. These are entertaining shortcuts we suggest. A recent visitor’s excitement over the purchase of a Navajo Storyteller doll in the Hubbell Trading Post at the Grand Canyon in Northern Arizona is a good place to start this column. The retired teacher, an avid collector of these dolls, recounted her joy in visiting the oldest continuously operating trading post in the U.S. to find this large-eyed, wide–mouthed effigy wearing the tribe’s distinctive squash-blossomed necklace and appearing to “teach her culture through a story.” The modern pottery dolls originated in the pueblos of New Mexico with their open mouths and surrounded by figures of children who must learn life’s lessons from this mother figure. Sometimes the dolls are animals with their babies. The more children, the higher the price with some figures valued over $1,000. The spiritual stories of the Hopi people are told by their Kachina (katsina) Dolls nowhere more enchantingly displayed than in the Goldwater Collection of over 400 dolls in the Phoenix Heard Museum of Native Cultures and Art in Central Arizona. Carved from the root of the Cottonwood trees, the first Kachinas were found by traders in 1857. The dolls, given to children as teaching tools are unique to the pueblo tribes of Arizona and New Mexico and reveal lessons about the spirits that live on the mesas. And Donovan Hanley with Detours of Arizona, a native of the Bit’hochee who grew up on the Navajo reservation will give an unparalleled tour of the legendary Four Corners landmarks. www.detoursaz.com The Arizona Historical Society is a treasure trove of Arizona’s ancient and modern history statewide with locations in four Arizona cities; Flagstaff, Tempe, Yuma and Tucson. arizonahistoricalsociety.org These museums are located in historic homes and adjacent to the University of Arizona campus and offer free guided tours for the price of admission. A favorite for those who love haunted history is the evening Ghost Trolley Tour in Yuma which starts at the 19th century Victorian Sanguinetti House in this Western Arizona town. Hear hair-raising stories of murder and mayhem from Yuma’s Gold Rush era and early Southern Pacific

Railroad robberies. The $30 fee is an exception to the other free tours but well worth the time capsule experience narrated by ghost hunter Dennis Quesenberry. Included in the 2-hour prowl is a reenactment at the dusty Pioneer Cemetery. Additionally, AZ Speaks, an outreach arm of Arizona Humanities, sponsors speakers from a diverse range of expertise, from a variety of professional backgrounds including civic engagement, film and media, history and cultural studies and more. Speakers are selected carefully based on their expertise and ability to match content with insight that inspires discussion with audiences of all ages and background. www.azhumanities.org/programs/azspeaks. Unexpected treasure awaits you if you drop in for a retro shave and haircut because you’ll meet up with some local “points of view” –no charge-- at V’s Barbershop in Tucson’s historic Joesler Village (Arizona’s first shopping center.) Here you’ll be offered a complimentary beer and lots of colorful Southern Arizona stories circulated by owner Jim Valenzuela in this upscale shop featuring antique barber chairs and uniformed barbers providing hot lather shaves, insightful blather, facials shoulder massages and shoe shines. But if you want to know where the Spaniards had a lookout for the Apache in the 1700’s or if Billy the Kid really hid out here, then the iconic tours of Tucson, Tombstone and Bisbee can be a Master Class in everything that shapes our culture in the Sonoran Desert. Your hot ticket for this is George Morrison, Wild Card Tours’ owner and spellbinding tour guide to this unique corner of the planet for 25 years. AZ
