slide rock state park
A
s the weather starts to warm up, it’s time to consider a trek to Slide Rock State Park, located six miles north of Sedona in scenic Oak Creek Canyon. The gorgeous scenery in and around the park earned a listing by Life Magazine as one of America’s ten most beautiful swimming holes. The park was originally the Pendley Homestead, a 43-acre apple farm. Frank Pendley acquired the land in 1910 and built an ingenious irrigation system (still in use today) that allowed him to plant his first apple orchard in 1912. As time went by, the site became a tourist attraction and in 1933 Pendley built a number of cabins for vacationers and sightseers alike. Slide Rock is more than just a swimming hole. The main attraction is a long stretch of slippery creek bottom where thrill seekers can slide down slick natural water slides. There are long slides, short slides and one that ends with a deep plunge off a rock into an inviting pool of water below. The rocks are a bit slippery, so water shoes are recommended. You’ll also want your bathing suit, towels, sun screen and a camera. If you enjoy nature and bird watching, a pair of binoculars will come in handy. Many spend most of the time cascading down the natural water slides, while others simply wade in the creek or enjoy the sun along the water’s edge. Fun-filled for both kids and adults, a visit to Sedona during the summer is not complete without spending a day at Slide Rock State Park. Slide Rock State Park is located at 6871 N. Highway 89A. For more information you can call (928) 282-3034 or visit www.pr.state.az.us. AZ

THE TRAIL OF TIME
During a recent trip up north with Steve Semken, a Geology Professor at Arizona State University, I was reacquainted with the Trail of Time, an entertaining and educational way to learn about the history, time scales, and processes of the Grand Canyon. The Trail of Time is a 2.83 mile long geologic timeline. Each meter walked on the timeline trail signifies one million years of Grand Canyon’s geologic history. Walking the trail gives you a visceral appreciation for the magnitude of geologic time. Bronze markers mark your location in time; every tenth marker is labeled in millions of years! Along the timeline trail are a series of rocks and exhibits that explain how Grand Canyon and its rock formed. The “Million Year Trail”, located at the Yavapai Point end of the Trail of Time, serves as an “on ramp” to the Trail of Time. Along it the first million years is stretched out to link human timescales (e.g. visitors’ birthdays and key events in early Grand Canyon explorations) with geologic timescales (e.g. climate change and Grand Canyon’s recent volcanic eruptions).
HERE COMES SANTA
Portal signs welcome visitors to the exhibit at the entry points to the trail, Yavapai Point and the west end of Grand Canyon Village. The rock column holding up this sign shows Grand Canyon’s actual rock layers, brought up from deep in the canyon. Placed at their “birthdays” along the trail are about 50 samples of Grand Canyon rocks brought to the rim from deep in the canyon. Many show spectacular features, like 1.7-billion-year-old folds, 1.2-billion year-old mud cracks, 800-million-year-old algal reefs, or 270-million-year-old fossils. Viewing tubes along the trail link times on the timeline to features and rocks down in the canyon. Waysides tied to the timeline explain the key events that lead to formation of Grand Canyon’s rocks and the landscape we see today at Grand Canyon. How to get there: Shuttle buses will take you to either end of the Trail of Time, at Yavapai Point and its geology museum or at Verkamps Visitor Center, which is located at the east end of the historic Grand Canyon Village. The start of the Trail of Time is at Yavapai Geology Museum, a half hour walk from Mather Point and the Canyon View Visitor Center. Walk into the past, walking backwards in time: Between Yavapai Geology Museum and Grand Canyon Village (1.3 miles), walk (west), backwards in time and experience Grand Canyon’s entire geologic history. You will start by walking the “Million Year Trail”, which transitions from human time scales to geologic ones. The “Million Year Trail” is immediately followed by the main Trail of Time where each meter equals one million years of Grand Canyon’s geologic history. This fully accessible one hour walking trip provides breath taking vistas of Grand Canyon and allows you to ponder and understand the depths of geologic space and time. Walk from the past to the present, forwards in time: Walking east from Grand Canyon Village takes you through the same experience, but forward in time, from Grand Canyon’s oldest rocks to canyon carving and Grand Canyon’s human history. As I’ve said many times in this column... you’ve made it this far, be sure to see why the Grand Canyon is one of the world’s natural wonders. To learn more about the Trail of Time, visit www.trailoftime.org. Our canyon information starts on page 68.

meteor crater: out of this world!
M
eteor Crater – the best preserved meteorite impact site on Earth is located in Northern Arizona, east of Flagstaff.
The Crater was created approximately 50,000 years ago when a meteor ended its 500 million year journey through space on a collision course with Earth. Traveling at approximately 26,000 miles per hour, it passed through the Earth’s atmosphere and, in a blinding flash, struck the Earth with an explosive force greater than twenty million tons of TNT. The meteor’s impact left a giant bowl-shaped crater nearly a mile across and more than 550 feet deep. The terrain of Meteor Crater so closely resembles that of the moon NASA made it an official training site for the Apollo astronauts.

POPULAR DESTINATIONS INCLUDE: Sedona – Often called “Red Rock Country” Sedona is a four seasons playground for everyone – whether you’re into history and archaeology; arts and culture; power shopping; outdoor sports; or the spiritual and metaphysical, imagine doing all this in a backdrop of some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Indeed, this picturesque city is surrounded by red-rock monoliths named Coffeepot, Cathedral and Thunder Mountain. At the north end of the city is the stunning Oak Creek Canyon, a breathtaking chasm that even today, is wildly wonderful. 800-288-7336 Prescott – Just 90 minutes north of Phoenix, “Everybody’s Hometown” is an ideal destination for golfers, outdoor adventure seekers, and western history buffs. From its majestic rock formations at Granite Dells to five area lakes to more than 450 miles of wellgroomed hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, Prescott knows no boundaries for exploring the area’s stunning natural beauty. The downtown Courthouse Plaza is Prescott’s historic heart. The plaza is bordered by the famous Whiskey Row, known to have hosted the likes of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday--and still hosts eclectic boutiques, galleries, antique shops, and restaurants. 800-266-7534 Jerome – After the mines closed in 1953 and “King Copper” left town, the population went from a peak of 15,000 in the 1920s to a low of 50 people. The Jerome Historical Society guarded the buildings against vandalism and the elements, the Douglas Mansion became a

State Park in 1965, and Jerome became a National Historic Landmark in 1976. During the 60’s and 70’s, Jerome offered a haven for artists. Soon newcomers and Jerome old timers were working together to bring Jerome back to life. Today, Jerome is very much alive with writers, artists, artisans, musicians, historians, and families. 928-634-2900 AZ

Grand Canyon The
“The Grand Canyon fills me with awe. It is beyond comparison--beyond description; absolutely unparalleled throughout the wide world .... Let this great wonder of nature remain as it now is. Do nothing to mar its grandeur, sublimity and loveliness. You cannot improve on it. But what you can do is to keep it for your children, your children’s children, and all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American should see.” — President Theodore Roosevelt ENJOYING THE SOUTH RIM Individual interests, available time, weather, and health considerations can influence your visit to the South Rim. Use the information available on the web site, www.nps.gov/grca/, to help plan your visit. Once you arrive in the park, read The Guide and talk with the rangers for up-to-the-minute information. Elevations along the rim vary from 6650 feet (2030 m) at Hermits Rest to more than 7400 feet (2260 m) at Desert View near the East Entrance. Summer temperatures are pleasant along the rim, but increase rapidly as you descend into the canyon. Low humidity makes for big temperature differences between day and night. The low humidity and high elevation also means that it is important to drink water frequently. Afternoon thundershowers are common in July, August, and early September. Windy conditions prevail in April and May. Snow may fall as early as November. Winter snowstorms continue into March. Many miles of roads along the rim feature numerous pullouts to enjoy the views. Hermit Road to Hermit Rest is open to private vehicles only from December through February. The free shuttle bus system provides a worryfree way to explore the developed areas of the rim. 70
The Rim Trail winds along the rim for more than 13 miles (21 km), much of it paved and suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. The Greenway, a broad, paved pathway suitable for hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, leads two miles (3 km) from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Grand Canyon Village. A separate segment heads east from Hermits Rest along the rim. The Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend steeply into the canyon. Rangers present programs—walks, talks, and evening presentations—throughout the year. All activities are free. Check in The Guide for programs during your stay. VISITOR CENTERS The National Park Service staffs several visitor centers on the South Rim. All are open every day of the year; hours vary seasonally. Grand Canyon Visitor Center Located near Mather Point The largest visitor center on the South Rim is a good stop for an introduction to Grand Canyon and for assistance in planning your visit.

Arizona Visitors Ask…? BY JOHNNY FENTON, M.A. CONCIERGE, OMNI TUCSON NATIONAL RESORT
Q. We’re up for a unique experience or two to file in our summer travel memory bank... Any suggestions--beyond the obvious? A. Well, we can’t all hang out in the wilds of Alaska like President Obama with adventurer Bear Gryllis, drinking tea made from catkins and eating salmon picked over by a (live) bear. But you can attend a Star Party at the Grand Canyon National Park in Northern Arizona every night from June 4th to June 11th free! That’s right. On eight nights around the full moon in the Park some 70,000 visitors have been coming to explore the wonders of the dark skies on the Grand Canyon National Parks South Rim for 26 years with the Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association where more than 100 astronomers volunteer their time and some 30 to 50 telescopes of all types and sizes. tucsonastronomy.org It all begins at 8 p.m. at the Visitor Center where a 45-minute lecture and videos kick off the evening followed by a constellation tour of the night skies at the rim through 6-inch to 26-inch reflector and refractor scopes. The tags are: NPS Centennial Star Party, night skies, astronomy. For more information call (928) 638-7830. This is just a single feature in one of Arizona’s 22 national parks. These empires of grandeur— are all joining in to help the National Parks Service celebrate its year-long 100th birthday throughout its 400-plus parks and sites. FindYourPark.com Often overlooked (no pun intended) are the remains of Wupatki (wuh-POTkee) Pueblo and its ball court where some 2,000 people farmed and frolicked around 1190 A.D. in a 100-room pueblo just 15 miles from the lava abyss known as Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. Archeologists have found pottery and turquoise in its chasms. Hiking the base of the crater along the lava trail is a unique experience. The volcanic cone which erupted in a fountain of fire some 900 years ago rises 8,029 feet above sea level with the 12,600-foot San Francisco Peaks in the background where Snowbowl skiing thrives in winter time seven miles from Flagstaff in Central Arizona. Definitely off the beaten path you will find the experimental city of Arcosanti 65 miles north of Phoenix at Cordes Junction. Envision some galactic empire straight out of a Star Wars film. This urban laboratory was the real vision of Italian architect Palo Soleri in the 1970s and continues to be built by volunteer architects worldwide. Originally conceived to house a population of 5,000 demonstrating how urban conditions could be improved while minimizing the destructive impact on the environment, it is currently home to 50 to 150 residents who work and live on the grounds. Workshops are available (928) 632-7135 www.arcosanti.org 80
How about a rare opportunity to celebrate Dia de San Juan (St. John’s Day) in the Southern Arizona city of Tucson to herald the coming of the monsoons or rainy season in the Sonoran Desert? Show up for food, fun, mariachis and a real pachanga beginning at 5 p.m. June 24 at the historic Mercado de San Augustin with a ceremonial procession honoring St. John the Baptist (patron saint of water) followed by a charreada (Mexican rodeo events), folklorico dancers, children’s games, food and beverage vendors. The event is free. (520) 861-4504 And oddly enough there’s an aquarium smack in the middle of the desert just 12 miles west of Tucson in Tucson Mountain Park at the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum open 365 days a year showcasing the marine life in Arizona! “Yes,” that’s the Colorado River that carved the Grand Canyon and formed parts of our state’s western border and “Yes” that’s the Gulf of California, a long narrow basin, which divides the land portion of the Sonoran Desert into two halves. The diversity of the gulf is amazing including everything from anchovies, Pacific seahorse, and giant squid to predatory fish like the reef shark. We wouldn’t have the vegetation or wildlife attributed to a lush desert without the storms generated by the Sea of Cortez aka the Gulf of California. (Check out the app that tells which restaurants serve sustainably harvested seafood.) Aquarium docents host the 45-minute touch tank experience at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. free with the price of a museum ticket. AZ Johnny Fenton—a 37-year resident of Arizona, is past President of the Southern Arizona Concierge Network, member of the National Concierge Association, and Les Clefs d’Or, U.S.A.
