publisher’spage HOLIDAYS IN ARIZONA

There’s a reason visitors from around the world flock to Arizona this time of year. The weather. Escaping chilly temperatures, gray skies, and gail force winds? No worries, the metro Phoenix and Tuscon areas boast sunshine and blue skies. It’s warm enough to swim in a heated pool and sip a tall, refreshing drink! Can’t fathom the thought of the Holdiay Season without snow? No need to worry about that either. Northern Arizona has plenty of the white stuff, from light dustings in Sedona to skiing, snowboarding, and sledding in Flagstaff. And words cannot do justice to the beauty of the Grand Canyon this time of year. Suffice to say, if you’ve never viewed the great chasm during the winter season, then you’re in for a treat.

HERE COMES SANTA

One of the southwest’s most famous icons takes on a special charm in November. The saguaro is native to the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, the Mexican state of Sonora, and the Whipple Mountains and Imperial County areas of California. Saguaros have a relatively long life span. They take up to 75 years to develop a side arm. A saguaro without arms is called a spear. And yes, we decorate these cacti with lights and hats! Speaking of holiday decorations, be on the lookout for displays of luminaria, a small paper lantern (commonly a candle set in some sand inside a paper bag). Electrically-lit luminarias are also used, consisting of a string of standard incandescent “Christmas lights” with the bulbs covered with a tan plastic sleeve, made to about the size and shape of a small paper bag. Traditional Christmas Eve luminarias are said to originate from Spaniard merchants. They were impressed with the paper lanterns from the Chinese culture and decided to make their own version when they returned to New Spain; particularly during the Christmas season. These are typically arranged in rows to create large and elaborate displays. The hope among Roman Catholics is that the lights will guide the spirit of the Christ child to one’s home. In recent times they are seen more as a secular decoration, akin to Christmas lights. At KEY, we’re very thankful to all who support our magazine - advertisers, concierge, travel planners, and our readers. Sharing the beauty and granduer of Arizona each month is a rewarding labor of love. Welcome to November in Arizona. No matter where you’re visiting from, we’re glad to have you. Happy Thanksgiving, and best wishes for a very joyous Holiday Season.

earless innovation and refined tradition share the stage in a new exhibition at the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM). This special exhibition features intricate inlaid artwork on rare instruments from world-class guitar makers such as C. F. Martin & Co., PRS Guitars, and more!

Dragons and Vines: Inlaid Guitar Masterpieces opens on Saturday, November 5, and features more than thirty collectible instruments—guitars, banjos, and a uniquely historical ukulele—that illustrate the imagination, skill, and unsurpassed attention to detail of North America’s greatest contemporary inlay artists and luthiers. These inlay artists challenge themselves and encourage each other to create designs that reveal astonishing detail upon close inspection: intricate flowering vines, ferocious dragons, human portraits, and

Sedona and North Central Arizona

V

aried and vibrant aptly describe the north central region. The famous Red Rocks of Sedona. The bar where Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday drank whiskey. The mining town carved on a hillside. With four seasons and something for everyone, this region begs to be seen and will not soon be forgotten.

POPULAR DESTINATIONS INCLUDE: Sedona – Often called “Red Rock Country” Sedona is a four seasons playground for everyone – whether you’re into history and archaeology; arts and culture; power shopping; outdoor sports; or the spiritual and metaphysical, imagine doing all this in a backdrop of some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Indeed, this picturesque city is surrounded by red-rock monoliths named Coffeepot, Cathedral and Thunder Mountain. At the north end of the city is the stunning Oak Creek Canyon, a breathtaking chasm that even today, is wildly wonderful. 800-288-7336 Prescott – Just 90 minutes north of Phoenix, “Everybody’s Hometown” is an ideal destination for golfers, outdoor adventure seekers, and western history buffs. From its majestic rock formations at Granite Dells to five area lakes to more than 450 miles of wellgroomed hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, Prescott knows no boundaries for exploring the area’s stunning natural beauty. The downtown Courthouse Plaza is Prescott’s historic heart. The plaza is bordered by the famous Whiskey Row, known to have hosted the likes of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday--and still hosts eclectic boutiques, galleries, antique shops, and restaurants. 800-266-7534 Jerome – After the mines closed in 1953 and “King Copper” left town, the population went from a peak of 15,000 in the 1920s to a low of 50 people. The Jerome Historical Society guarded the buildings against vandalism and the elements, the Douglas Mansion became a

58

State Park in 1965, and Jerome became a National Historic Landmark in 1976. During the 60’s and 70’s, Jerome offered a haven for artists. Soon newcomers and Jerome old timers were working together to bring Jerome back to life. Today, Jerome is very much alive with writers, artists, artisans, musicians, historians, and families. 928-634-2900 AZ

Grand Canyon The

“The Grand Canyon fills me with awe. It is beyond comparison--beyond description; absolutely unparalleled throughout the wide world .... Let this great wonder of nature remain as it now is. Do nothing to mar its grandeur, sublimity and loveliness. You cannot improve on it. But what you can do is to keep it for your children, your children’s children, and all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American should see.”
— President Theodore Roosevelt ENJOYING THE SOUTH RIM Individual interests, available time, weather, and health considerations can influence your visit to the South Rim. Use the information available on the web site, www.nps.gov/grca/, to help plan your visit. Once you arrive in the park, read The Guide and talk with the rangers for up-to-the-minute information. Elevations along the rim vary from 6650 feet (2030 m) at Hermits Rest to more than 7400 feet (2260 m) at Desert View near the East Entrance. Summer temperatures are pleasant along the rim, but increase rapidly as you descend into the canyon. Low humidity makes for big temperature differences between day and night. The low humidity and high elevation also means that it is important to drink water frequently. Afternoon thundershowers are common in July, August, and early September. Windy conditions prevail in April and May. Snow may fall as early as November. Winter snowstorms continue into March. Many miles of roads along the rim feature numerous pullouts to enjoy the views. Hermit Road to Hermit Rest is open to private vehicles only from December through February. The free shuttle bus system provides a worryfree way to explore the developed areas of the rim. 70

The Rim Trail winds along the rim for more than 13 miles (21 km), much of it paved and suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. The Greenway, a broad, paved pathway suitable for hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, leads two miles (3 km) from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Grand Canyon Village. A separate segment heads east from Hermits Rest along the rim. The Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend steeply into the canyon. Rangers present programs—walks, talks, and evening presentations—throughout the year. All activities are free. Check in The Guide for programs during your stay. VISITOR CENTERS The National Park Service staffs several visitor centers on the South Rim. All are open every day of the year; hours vary seasonally. Grand Canyon Visitor Center Located near Mather Point The largest visitor center on the South Rim is a good stop for an introduction to Grand Canyon and for assistance in planning your visit.

Arizona Visitors Ask…? BY JOHNNY FENTON, M.A. CONCIERGE, OMNI TUCSON NATIONAL RESORT

Q. What’s the hot ticket in town? We’d like to catch some entertainment while on our stay in Arizona. A. You can bet that the tutus begin twirling once again in the fall as curtains go up on our performing arts season in the Southwest! And 2016 doesn’t disappoint! Here are few personal recommendations to satisfy the mix of traditionalists who enjoy performances of “the things we know and love” and the folks who seek the uncommon journey of “a new experience.” The Verde Valley Sinfonietta Chamber Orchestra unwraps its gift of beautifully played classical music at its first concert of the 2016-2017 season in the Sedona Performing Arts Center of this enchanting red rock country of Northern Arizona. The professionally-trained orchestra leads off with its Autumn Treasures event on November 13th at 2:30 p.m. with selections from the works of Rossini, Schubert, Beethoven and a flashy Hubay Hungarian tavern dance. The guest conductor Matthew Savery, Bozeman Montana Symphony’s Music Director, conducts the VVS featuring concertmaster Bill Cummings. Tickets are $25, more information at www.vvsinfonietta.org. Or do a 180-degree musical turn on most Fridays in November at Sedona’s Sound Bites Grill. Seven is the magic hour to hear world-renowned guitar virtuoso Anthony Mazzella perform his tribute show to famous guitarists and their music including: Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Harrison (Beatles), Richards (Rolling Stones), Clapton and Santana for starters. Menu standouts include the Fleetwood Mac & Cheese and tiger shrimp on Rascal Flatbread. Tickets $20-$30. www.soundbitesgrill.com For the mental floss crowd who aren’t traveling to London’s West End to take in the theatre scene, the Global Lens Film Series at the Phoenix Art Museum in Central Arizona presents National Theatre Live: “One Man, Two Guvnors” a Tony-award winning, wacky runaway comedy hit adapted from an Italian play “The Servant of Two Masters” starring James Corden (of Carpool Karaoke fame.) November 20, 2p.m., Tickets $18. And the Museum opens an exhibit on November 6 of women’s couture fashions of the 1970’s and 1980’s titled “Emphatics” featuring a private collection of designer wear that was carried in a Pittsburg boutique of the same name. A film by Kehinde Wiley centering on the female figure in fashions of the 18th and 19th aristocracy, “An Economy of Grace”, will show on opening day at 2 p.m. It is free with the museum’s general admission. phxart.org (602) 257-1880. Or if your family is ready to jump start the holidays and take in one of Phoenix’s architectural gems at the same time, why not celebrate with Santa and his special elves on a Christmas cheer journey at the historic Orpheum Theatre with its famed Peacock Staircase built in the Spanish-Baroque Revival style of architecture (1929.) Broadway Christmas Wonderland at the Orpheum is one of the most enchanting and delightful holiday shows ever! The sounds of holiday classics like ‘White Christmas,’ ‘Jingle Bells,’ ‘Winter Wonderland’ and ‘Deck the Halls’

beautifully sung by the highest kicking chorus girls in hundreds of glittering costumes this side of the North Pole! The magic of the holidays unfolds promising to paint the evening with colorful Winter Wonderland memories for the entire family. November 25-27, www.phoenixconventioncenter. com/orpheum-theatre (602) 257-1880 Choosing what to watch in the leaping-and-twirling world of dance in Southern Arizona might leave your head spinning! Attend a performance of “Premium Blend” in the magnificent Stevie Eller Dance Theatre presented by one of the country’s premier dance collaboratives--The University of Arizona School of Dance. This year faculty and budding dance pros in Tucson on the UA campus feature a tribute to George Balanchine and Forever Fred, an homage to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, November 2-6, tickets $15-$35 (520) 621-1162. If a professional troupe of tango dancers would quicken your pulse, then stroll over to Centennial Hall on campus November 18th for a riveting evening of footwork performed by a troupe of 25 dancers and musicians conveying the soul of their homeland Argentina known as Estampas Portenas, courtesy of UA Presents. (520) 621-3341, www.uapresents.org. Traditionalists are treated to Arizona Opera’s season opener Dvorak’s Rusalka, based on the Hans Christian Anderson fairytale about a water sprite. A favorite feature with Arizona Opera is honored with UA vocal students singing key arias from the show before the production. November 19-20 at the Tucson Music Hall www. azopera.org (520) 293-4336. Nature Connects : Art with LEGO Bricks ®

®

at the Phoenix Zoo Now – January 2, 2017

N

ature Connects® is an award-winning, recordbreaking exhibition currently touring across the country. Created with over 1 million LEGO® pieces, the show features 27 animal and flora sculptures built with LEGO bricks thanks to the vision of esteemed artist Sean Kenney. “I’m excited to bring Nature Connects to the Phoenix Zoo,” Kenney said. “Everyone can get something out of the exhibit; whether it’s an educational message about conservation and ecosystems, an appreciation for the beauty of nature, the fun of seeing giant larger-than-life sculptures built with millions of LEGO bricks.” The idea behind Kenney’s creation is simple, yet profound. “Fundamentally, the show is about connections,” Kenney adds. “Much as LEGO pieces connect, everything in nature is connected in an intricate balance.” In that spirit, several sculptures in Nature Connects highlight animals which are endangered, threatened of vulnerable to help guests understand the vital connection between animal conservation and the community. The 27 sculptures are scattered throughout the entire Zoo, stretching from the edges of Harmony Farm all the way up to a trio of animals grazing near the lion and hyena habitats. Located at each sculpture is a sign highlighting interesting facts about the piece, how many hours it took to create it and how many LEGO bricks it is comprised of. With more than 133,000 pieces and weighing over 625 pounds, perhaps the most elaborate and eye-popping piece in the showcase is a Phoenix Zoo life-size polar bear and her cubs. Additionally, guests will see a Galapagos tortoise, monarch butterfly, rhinoceros, jeweled chameleon, snow leopard 455 N Galvin Pkwy and many more. Phoenix, AZ 85008 Nature Connects is currently at the Phoenix Zoo through January 2, 602-286-3800 2017. All of the sculptures can be seen with general admission into the phoenixzoo.org Zoo.
