publisher’spage THE CHANGING COLORS OF AUTUMN Now that summer has yielded to fall, the Grand Canyon State begins a months long period of perfect weather. Cooler temperatures and shorter daylight hours send a signal to the trees, and they respond with an explosion of autumn colors. If you enjoy nature, hiking, and leaf peeping, then October will reward you with a spectacular display of nature’s grandeur. So grab a light jacket, hiking shoes, a camera, and embark on a trip to experience the changing colors of the season. The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is spectacular. The journey crosses the Colorado River and traverses the red rocks of Marble Canyon and the Vermilion Cliffs. As you climb the Kaibab Plateau, stunning Aspen groves reward your trek. (www.fs.usda.gov/kaibab)
HERE COMES SANTA
The Kachina Trail, located in the San Francisco Peaks north of Flagstaff, meanders across the middle of the mountains while passing through Conifer groves and Aspens. Old growth forests at higher elevations contain Limber pines and Douglas firs. Lower elevations greet you with rising Ponderosa pines. (www.fs.usda.gov/coconino) Every autumn, Oak Creek Canyon, north of Sedona, puts on a vibrant red display of Oaks and Maples. You can drive the scenic length of Route 89A, or walk along the West Fork of Oak Creek. Incredible red rock scenery, towering cliffs, and the babbling creek add to nature;s painting of deep red and scarlet leaves. (www.fs.usda.gov/coconino) Rising to an elevation of about 8,400 feet, the Hualapai Mountains are topped with Ponderosa pines and aspens. To navigate this forest labyrinth, hike the Potato Patch Loop as it weaves and circles Aspen Peak. In addition to a wonder color palette, the trail provides a nice adventure complete with twists, turns, and giant boulders. (www.mcparks.com) Of course, Arizona has an incredible collection of state parks that explode in color throughout the year. From the stunning vistas of the Basin and Range province of Southern to Central Arizona, to the rugged beauty of the Transition Zone of Central to Northern Arizona, and to the Mogollon Rim cliffs and forests of the Colorado Plateau in Northern Arizona, the Arizona State Park system provides a kaleidoscope of fall colors. As October progresses, be sure to visit Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park to witness first hand the grove of burgundy Chinese pistachios, Sycamores and Varnish trees. (AZStateParks.com) Welcome to autumn in Arizona. May your visit be full of vibrant colors, stunning scenery, and life long memories.

SCOTTSDALE’S LAST REAL COWBOY SALOON
Rusty Spur Saloon
T
here are real cowboy bars all over the great wide American West, but few that serve up great live music daily like Scottsdale’s Rusty Spur Saloon. The Rusty Spur has authentic country and western music every day of the week. Johnny Cash or Gene Autry wouldn’t be out of place here.
The Rusty Spur has both kinds of music – country and western. Well, actually it’s got a bit of blues and rockabilly in the mix as well. Acts range from the singing cowboy in the corner to a full country band rocking away on its tiny stage. If you’re looking for a fancy live event with all the 18
bells and whistles, the Rusty Spur isn’t for you. But if you want to duck out of the Arizona heat and enjoy an ice cold beer and some hot country dancing, this is the place. It’s known not only for its excellent live acts, but for its boisterous, lively crowds, especially on weekend nights. The Rusty Spur offers a guaranteed good ol’ time. Arizona KEYMagazine

2ND ANNUAL ENCHANTED PUMPKIN GARDEN IN CAREFREE Featuring World Renowned Master Sculptor Ray Villafane
alloween spirit invades Carefree for its second year in the form of whimsical pumpkin carvings from master sculptor Ray Villafane. The Enchanted Pumpkin Garden will be open to the public and woven throughout the four acre Carefree Desert Gardens. This free, one-of-a-kind fall event celebrates incredible artistry and enchantment of the Halloween season for all ages and runs October 17-31, 2016, 10 a.m. - 10 p.m., 101 Easy Street, Carefree, Arizona. Last year was the first event and it attracted over 30,000 visitors and it’s estimated to increase dramatically based on the extensive media coverage. New in 2016 will be the unveiling of Ray’s life size scarecrows which are hand sculpted mostly of organic materials. Visitors are invited back to stroll and experience the many new mischievous pumpkin characters, artfully imagined and frolicking in their magical garden home and new Pumpkin Village featuring a general store, saloon and bank. In addition to the playful pumpkins, Ray and his team will carve ten 3D pumpkin faces preserved and displayed in tanks that resemble Saguaro cacti, sculpted and immersed in a pickling solution for preservation. Ray will again, carve a “colossal” 400 lb. pumpkin and visitors are welcome to ask questions while kids can carve with him up-close and personal. Other special weekend events include family carving nights with Ray Villafane and the YMCA, Picasso pumpkin activities for kids hosted by Easy Street Galleria, “adopt a pumpkin” from the pumpkin patch, pumpkin pie eating Enchanted Pumpkin Garden contest sponsored by Venues Café. Craft beer garden, culinary food trucks and Carefree Desert Gardens autumnal snacks. On Halloween, costumes are encouraged and kids are welcome October 17 - 31, 10am - 10pm to trick or treat at various stations throughout the gardens. Indeed, this picturesque city is surrounded by red-rock monoliths named Coffeepot, Cathedral and Thunder Mountain. Grand Canyon The
“The Grand Canyon fills me with awe. It is beyond comparison--beyond description; absolutely unparalleled throughout the wide world .... Let this great wonder of nature remain as it now is. Do nothing to mar its grandeur, sublimity and loveliness. You cannot improve on it. But what you can do is to keep it for your children, your children’s children, and all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American should see.” — President Theodore Roosevelt ENJOYING THE SOUTH RIM Individual interests, available time, weather, and health considerations can influence your visit to the South Rim. Use the information available on the web site, www.nps.gov/grca/, to help plan your visit. Once you arrive in the park, read The Guide and talk with the rangers for up-to-the-minute information. Elevations along the rim vary from 6650 feet (2030 m) at Hermits Rest to more than 7400 feet (2260 m) at Desert View near the East Entrance. Summer temperatures are pleasant along the rim, but increase rapidly as you descend into the canyon. Low humidity makes for big temperature differences between day and night. The low humidity and high elevation also means that it is important to drink water frequently. Afternoon thundershowers are common in July, August, and early September. Windy conditions prevail in April and May. Snow may fall as early as November. Winter snowstorms continue into March. Many miles of roads along the rim feature numerous pullouts to enjoy the views. Hermit Road to Hermit Rest is open to private vehicles only from December through February. The free shuttle bus system provides a worryfree way to explore the developed areas of the rim. 70
The Rim Trail winds along the rim for more than 13 miles (21 km), much of it paved and suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. The Greenway, a broad, paved pathway suitable for hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, leads two miles (3 km) from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Grand Canyon Village. A separate segment heads east from Hermits Rest along the rim. The Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend steeply into the canyon. Rangers present programs—walks, talks, and evening presentations—throughout the year. All activities are free. Check in The Guide for programs during your stay. VISITOR CENTERS The National Park Service staffs several visitor centers on the South Rim. All are open every day of the year; hours vary seasonally. Grand Canyon Visitor Center Located near Mather Point The largest visitor center on the South Rim is a good stop for an introduction to Grand Canyon and for assistance in planning your visit.

Arizona Visitors Ask…? BY JOHNNY FENTON, M.A. CONCIERGE, OMNI TUCSON NATIONAL RESORT
Q. What are some of your best wheelchair-friendly suggestions for a vacationer to Arizona? A. Most would agree that there is no education like adversity, because most of us have hit a wall or two in our own lifetime. And with last year marking the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), handicapped travelers are afforded increased opportunities for sampling the “flavor” of their destinations—especially in Arizona. The Grand Canyon National Park in Northern Arizona rolls out its red carpet for our guests with mobility limitations, on a scale as grand as its allure. First, pick up an Access Pass supplied by the National Park Service upon your arrival at the Park entrance which will give you free entrance (up to four passengers per vehicle) which gives you special parking priority and other discounts. Make a reservation before arrival to receive a guided bus tour (928-638-2611) specifically designed for all with limited mobility. North Kaibab and Bright Angel trails are the smoothest and widest trails to navigate at the rim. Invite a friend or arrange for a service animal if you want to view the Canyon below the rim. And if you plan to skip conventional transportation to the park, you can take advantage of the Canyon Paratransit Service (928-638-0591.) October is an ideal time to visit the park with fewer crowds to contend with allowing better views of the rim’s landscape and the likelihood of more encounters with the Park’s wildlife while skirting the climate challenges before winter settles in. The pine-studded jewel of a town two hours north of Phoenix in Central Arizona, once the territorial capital of the Arizona Territory—Prescott has more than 500 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. So you are in for a truly colorful Historic “Walking” Tour, if you show up at 10 a.m. at the Visitors Center on the south side of the Courthouse Plaza most weekends Fridays through Sundays. Hosted by the Chamber of Commerce, the ground level tour takes in a sweep of history from when Abraham Lincoln established the mining town as a military outpost for the Civil War, through the years when Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday lived among its residents and hung their holsters on the bedposts in the late 1800’s at The Palace Hotel on Whiskey Row before the great fire of 1900. The original grand ornate oak bar was saved by customers in the Palace saloon who carried it out in the midst of the blaze into the Square where they continued carousing. Only a Friday tour will be given on the first weekend of October because the Plaza will be central to the arts and crafts show known as the Fallfest that weekend which will host about 100 vendors at street level –accessible for all in the area. . For more information contact the Prescott Chamber

of Commerce www.prescott.org (928) 445-2000. The underground Titan Missile site in Southern Arizona known as Site 571-7, was one of 54 in three states armed with nuclear warheads during the Cold War. One of three that remains as a museum with an actual missile (disarmed) is located south of Tucson near Sahuarita, 30 feet beneath the ground with elevator access. Experience an actual countdown to activate a launch, and poke around in this area originally designed to start or prevent a nuclear war. Call ahead (520) 625-7736 or if you prefer your adventure airborne rather than earthbound, then the sky’s the limit because you’re invited to soar with Tucson’s oldest and most experienced professional hot air balloonists Fleur de Tucson Balloon Company, and first to offer handicap accessible rides over the Tucson Mountains and Saguaro National Park West with matchless view of desert wildlife such as javelina, bob cats, mule deer and red tailed hawks as seen on Animal Planet’s Jeff Corwin Arizona Experience. (520) 403-8547 www.fleurdetucson.net A parting tip from an excellent resource the Society for Accessible Travel & Hospitality (SATH) info@sath.org: Never pack sightseeing into your itinerary on the actual days of travel since the time spent in the airplane, car or train provides enough excitement if you are traveling a great distance. Here’s to the 53 million people in the U.S. alone who don’t view their handicap as an impediment to travel! AZ
