he Granite Dells is a stunning geological feature north of Prescott, which consist of exposed bedrock and large boulders of granite that have eroded into an unusual lumpy, rippled appearance. Watson Lake and Willow Lake are small man-made reservoirs in this formation. Watson Lake Park allows access to Watson Lake and the boulders of the Granite Dells. Boat launches, fishing, picnic ramadas, restrooms, grills, playground equipment, horseshoe pits, and hiking trails are also available. Canoe and kayak rentals are provided by Prescott Outdoors. Willow Lake Park has a boat launch, courtesy dock, picnic ramadas, and rest rooms. In addition to fishing, there is a multi-use trail circling the lake, an Audobon Society designated “important birding area”, and the Willow Lake Archaeological Site A.D. 900-1100. The Peavine National Recreation Trail follows the former railbed of the Santa Fe, Prescott and Phoenix Railway through the Granite Dells. This winding portion of the railroad was known as the “Peavine” because its twisting curves resembled that of a pea vine. It connects to the Iron King Trail, which follows the route of the old Prescott & Eastern Railroad through the eastern Granite Dells. Both are rail trail conversions. The precambrian Dells’ granite has been dated at 1.4 billion years old. Its pluton was intruded at a depth of around one or two miles. These cover rocks have since been eroded away. Weathering along joints produced the rounded boulders and other unusual rock formations that characterize the Granite Dells. This process is called spheroidal weathering, and is common in granitic terrains. From fascinating geology, to natural beauty, and outdoor adventure, the Granite Dells and accompanying lakes make for a wonderful day trip. Ancient Ruins of Canyon de Chelly: Reflecting one of the longest continuously inhabited landscapes of North America, it preserves ruins of the early indigenous tribes that lived in the area, including the Ancient Pueblo Peoples (also called Anasazi) and Navajo. (www.nps.gov/cach) Hoover Dam: Five years, thousands of workers, and 4.4 million cubic yards of concrete built this wonder. Today, nearly a million people per year take tours of the dam. Montezuma Castle National Monument: Situated 90 feet up a sheer limestone cliff, it is one of the best-preserved cliff dwellings in North America. The precariousness of the dwelling’s location and its immense scale - almost 4,000 sq. ft. of floor space across five stories - suggest that the Sinagua were daring builders and skilled engineers. (nps.gov/moca) Lowell Observatory: Established in 1894, it is among the oldest observatories in the US, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965. In 2011, the Observatory was named one of “The World’s 100 Most Important Places” by TIME. The dwarf planet Pluto, currently being studied by the New Horizons Mission, was discovered here in 1930 by Clyde Tombaugh. Tours and viewings are available daily. (www.lowell.edu) University of Phoenix Stadium: Home of the Arizona Cardinals, it features the first fully retractable natural grass playing surface built in the US. An opening on one side of the stadium lets the playing field to move to the exterior of the building, allowing the entire natural turf playing surface to be exposed to daylight. (universityofphoenixstadium.com) Chapel of the Holy Cross: Local sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude commissioned the church after being inspired by the newly constructed Empire State Building. “Though Catholic in faith, as a work of art the Chapel has a universal appeal. Its doors will ever be open to one and all, regardless of creed, that God may come to life in the souls of all people and be a living reality.” (www.chapeloftheholycross.com) London Bridge: The bridge from our our childhood nursery rhyme resides in Lake Havasu City. It is a relocated 1831 bridge that formerly spanned the River Thames in London, England, until it was dismantled in 1967 and bought by Robert P. McCulloch from the City of London. McCulloch had exterior granite blocks from the original bridge numbered and transported to America. The bridge was completed in 1971 (along with a canal), and links an island in the Colorado River with the main part of Lake Havasu City. (golakehavasu.com) Welcome to the Grand Canyon State. ne of the state’s oldest restaurants -- where several Western movies were filmed, Dick Van Dyke played the drums, and four Steelers Super Bowl parties were held – turns 80 years old in September. If you’ve never been to Harold’s Cave Creek Corral, now is a great time to learn about the iconic restaurant’s colorful, rich history! A man named Johnny Walker built the original structure of Harold’s Corral in 1935. Back then it was known as The Cave Creek Corral Bar, and it became popular with patrons who spent their days building Bartlett and Horseshoe Dams. Somewhere around 1950, Harold and Ruth Gavagan purchased the building, changing the name to Harold’s Cave Creek Corral. Several 80th Anniversary events are being planned including an Employee Reunion on Wed., Sept. 9, a Love Corral night on Sat., Sept. 12 for couples who met there, a Cave Creek Elementary School Reunion on Thurs., Sept. 17, and a Steelers Party on Sunday, Sept. 20. Use the information available on the web site, www.nps.gov/grca/, to help plan your visit. Once you arrive in the park, read The Guide and talk with the rangers for up-to-the-minute information. Elevations along the rim vary from 6650 feet (2030 m) at Hermits Rest to more than 7400 feet (2260 m) at Desert View near the East Entrance. Summer temperatures are pleasant along the rim, but increase rapidly as you descend into the canyon. Low humidity makes for big temperature differences between day and night. The low humidity and high elevation also means that it is important to drink water frequently. Afternoon thundershowers are common in July, August, and early September. Windy conditions prevail in April and May. Snow may fall as early as November. Winter snowstorms continue into March. Many miles of roads along the rim feature numerous pullouts to enjoy the views. Hermit Road to Hermit Rest is open to private vehicles only from December through February. The free shuttle bus system provides a worryfree way to explore the developed areas of the rim. 70

The Rim Trail winds along the rim for more than 13 miles (21 km), much of it paved and suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. The Greenway, a broad, paved pathway suitable for hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, leads two miles (3 km) from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Grand Canyon Village. A separate segment heads east from Hermits Rest along the rim. The Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend steeply into the canyon. Rangers present programs—walks, talks, and evening presentations—throughout the year. All activities are free. Check in The Guide for programs during your stay. VISITOR CENTERS The National Park Service staffs several visitor centers on the South Rim. All are open every day of the year; hours vary seasonally. A. “Are you the CONSOMMÉ ?” a guest asked one of my fellow concierges recently! Of course we answer to “ conserge, conswargee, consigliere, connoisseur, conseeair,” etc. on a daily basis. But for those travelers truly seeking information that will put them in touch with the unique and the unforgettable trip experience, it’s unimportant what you tag us. Truthfully we are the storytellers and the journey makers at your hotels and resorts that can kick it up a notch during your stay.

Call the concierge desk before arriving, for floral orders, itinerary planning and other special requests. If you want 75 miniature cupcakes that spell out “Will you marry me?” on your room’s king-size bed; or a violinist hired to play at your dinner table specifically for an occasion; or guided tours into wine country, call ahead so you won’t be disappointed when short notice won’t work.

Social media may not tell a guest if a restaurant is closed for repairs or the fact that handicapped seating that goes unused at a performance venue can be released for ticket sales the last hour before show time. It may not be able to explain to a 7-year-old how a double rainbow (that he just saw) is formed. It won’t have a special relationship with restaurant owners to slip you in when “there is no seating available.” So, for a concierge, it’s harder to digest than a fast food value meal, that a guest would miss out on this amenity that the hotel provides to insure a guest’s maximum experience. New research on how to create an ideal vacation that boosts our well-being, relieves stress and helps us recharge for returning to work resulted in the following conclusions: “Longer vacations aren’t necessarily better than shorter ones. Engage in activities you haven’t done before even if you are on a staycation. And end a trip on a high note.” These points can be refined with a pre-call to the concierge desk before arrival. Efficiency is the key to short vacations. Use the concierge’s expertise on activities you’ve not experienced and inspiration for ending your stay on a high note. For the best results when speaking with a concierge, ask value-added questions. These usually lead to a value-added experience. For example, if you want a dinner reservation, describe how you picture the dining experience. Do you want quick service and a premium hamburger close to the hotel or would you like Latin cuisine, atmosphere and entertainment with your meal?
