BALLOONS&TUNES

H

ot Air Expeditions and the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM), two of Arizona’s most popular attractions, have collaborated to offer a spectacular fun-filled package, appropriately named Balloons & Tunes! Your half-day excursion begins at sunrise with the hot air ballooning experience of a lifetime from Hot Air Expeditions, where you are treated to soaring over the stunning Sonoran Desert for your 60-90 minute flight. While in flight, your FAA-certified pilot navigates the winds to provide you with one-of-a-kind breathtaking views of Arizona from a variety of altitudes. You will float from within feet of the ground, viewing local wildlife and plant life that are out for the day, as well as up to 5,000 feet in the air for a stunning overview of the valley. Upon landing, a lovely table complete with linens and china awaits you in the heart of the desert for your scrumptiously prepared champagne breakfast catered by the award-winning Vincent’s on Camelback Restaurant. The presentation of commemorative flight certificates caps off the morning ballooning experience, providing guests with a piece of the adventure that just ensued. After your ballooning experience, guests are shuttled from the desert to the #1 TripAdvisor Attraction in Phoenix, the Musical Instrument Museum, where the second part of your adventurous day begins. With vouchers for admission and lunch in tow, guests embark on a musical journey using wireless technology for a self-guided tour that is entertaining, interactive, and engaging. MIM showcases over 6,800 instruments and objects from 200 countries and territories, and with the audio and video segments, you will hear, see, and feel the creative spirit of the musicians as they play their instruments. Within the museum, there are exhibits that pay tribute to musicians who have touched the lives of many, and feature an expansive collection of instruments from famous performers such as Maroon 5, Taylor Swift, Elvis Presley, and more in the Artist Gallery. The Experience Gallery is another can’t miss stop at MIM where you can play unique instruments from around the world. Wrap the day up with lunch in MIM’s award-winning Café Allegro, which serves a menu of great-tasting global and local foods prepared daily, using fresh ingredients, followed by return transfers. Balloons & Tunes Packages start at $235 per person and can be booked with Hot Air Expeditions at (800) 831-7610 or HotAirExpeditions.com. AZ

publisher’spage 7 WONDERS OF ARIZONA

Do you know the 7 Wonders of Arizona? Created by human endeavor, the list includes the ruins of our ancient ancestors, a bridge from our childhood, and one of the greatest engineering feats of the 20th century! Ancient Ruins of Canyon de Chelly: Reflecting one of the longest continuously inhabited landscapes of North America, it preserves ruins of the early indigenous tribes that lived in the area, including the Ancient Pueblo Peoples (also called Anasazi) and Navajo. (www.nps.gov/cach) Hoover Dam: Five years, thousands of workers, and 4.4 million cubic yards of concrete built this wonder. Today, nearly a million people per year take tours of the dam. The view from the bottom looking up at the 726-foot high wall is spell binding. (www.usbr.gov/lc/hooverdam/)

HERE COMES SANTA

Montezuma Castle National Monument: Situated 90 feet up a sheer limestone cliff, it is one of the best-preserved cliff dwellings in North America. The precariousness of the dwelling’s location and its immense scale - almost 4,000 sq. ft. of floor space across five stories - suggest that the Sinagua were daring builders and skilled engineers. (nps.gov/moca) Lowell Observatory: Established in 1894, it is among the oldest observatories in the US, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965. In 2011, the Observatory was named one of “The World’s 100 Most Important Places” by TIME. The dwarf planet Pluto, currently being studied by the New Horizons Mission, was discovered here in 1930 by Clyde Tombaugh. Tours and viewings are available daily. (www.lowell.edu) University of Phoenix Stadium: Home of the Arizona Cardinals, it features the first fully retractable natural grass playing surface built in the US. An opening on one side of the stadium lets the playing field to move to the exterior of the building, allowing the entire natural turf playing surface to be exposed to daylight. (universityofphoenixstadium.com) Chapel of the Holy Cross: Local sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude commissioned the church after being inspired by the newly constructed Empire State Building. “Though Catholic in faith, as a work of art the Chapel has a universal appeal. Its doors will ever be open to one and all, regardless of creed, that God may come to life in the souls of all people and be a living reality.” (www.chapeloftheholycross.com) London Bridge: The bridge from our our childhood nursery rhyme resides in Lake Havasu City. It is a relocated 1831 bridge that formerly spanned the River Thames in London, England, until it was dismantled in 1967 and bought by Robert P. McCulloch from the City of London. McCulloch had exterior granite blocks from the original bridge numbered and transported to America. The bridge was completed in 1971 (along with a canal), and links an island in the Colorado River with the main part of Lake Havasu City. (golakehavasu.com) Welcome to the Grand Canyon State. Enjoy your stay while experiencing the Wonders of Arizona! Owner / Publisher

SCOTTSDALE’S

VENETO TRATTORIA ANNOUNCES WEEK LONG 20TH ANNIVERSARY EVENT Special $20 Dinner Menu Highlights Restaurant’s Celebration October 13th - October 20th

V

eneto Trattoria in Scottsdale makes Valley restaurant history on October 13th marking their 20 year anniversary. That’s 20 years in the same location, with the same owners, same chef and numerous original staff members – not a common occasion. Susan and Roberto Rossi, founded Veneto Trattoria in 1997 in Hilton Village, at the northeast corner of Scottsdale Road and McDonald Dr. Rossi’s envisioned an authentic trattoria, like the warm and friendly small neighborhood restaurants of Roberto’s native Veneto region. Their goal was to serve authentic Northern Italian cuisine typical of Venice and the Veneto region, prepared with fresh ingredients, lightly seasoned, the cuisine typical of the Mediterranean diet. “Our goal today remains the same,” explains owner, Roberto Rossi, “we want the dining at Veneto Trattoria to be as close as possible to dining in Venice.” Diners at Veneto value the consistency of the menu, dishes taste the same as they did on opening day. Most pastas and all desserts are made in house. Signature dishes include two items rarely found on US menus, baccala mantecato which is Venetian style cod, and a customer favorite, fegato alla veneziana, Italian for calf liver with golden onions. A $20.00 three-course choice dinner menu highlights Veneto’s anniversary celebration, which starts on Friday, October 13th and extends through Friday, October 20th. The restaurant is open for lunch from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. and serves dinner from 5:30 until 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday. “Our staff is an extended family and customers enjoy being recognized and greeted by name. Many customers dine with us several times a week and we are very appreciative their loyalty,” says Rossi. “They, too, have become part of Veneto Trattoria our Veneto family.” 6137 N. Why Are Sedona’s Rocks

Red?

The answer to one of the most asked questions by Sedona visitors is iron! The incredible array of colors displayed by Sedona’s famous Red Rocks is a direct result of iron oxide in water seeping into sandstone rock formations. Water carrying dissolved iron oxide drains through the porous sandstone and literally paints quartz grains – you guessed it – red! The Red Rocks vary in origin, color and age. Some were originally sea sediment while others came from blowing sand. You’ll see bright orange, red and tan rocks. The brightest orange rocks are more than 250 million

years old. White and grey rocks are limestone that formed at the bottom of the sea or sandstone that had its red color washed out by water. You may also stumble across basalt extruded by volcanoes in the past. Sedona and its famous Red Rocks have been in the making for hundreds of millions of years. There are many ways to enjoy the scenery, just be sure to get out and experience Sedona’s world renowned Red Rocks! And remember, take only memories, leave only footprints. AZ

Grand Canyon The

“The Grand Canyon fills me with awe. It is beyond comparison--beyond description; absolutely unparalleled throughout the wide world .... Let this great wonder of nature remain as it now is. Do nothing to mar its grandeur, sublimity and loveliness. You cannot improve on it. But what you can do is to keep it for your children, your children’s children, and all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American should see.”
— President Theodore Roosevelt ENJOYING THE SOUTH RIM Individual interests, available time, weather, and health considerations can influence your visit to the South Rim. Use the information available on the web site, www.nps.gov/grca/, to help plan your visit. Once you arrive in the park, read The Guide and talk with the rangers for up-to-the-minute information. Elevations along the rim vary from 6650 feet (2030 m) at Hermits Rest to more than 7400 feet (2260 m) at Desert View near the East Entrance. Summer temperatures are pleasant along the rim, but increase rapidly as you descend into the canyon. Low humidity makes for big temperature differences between day and night. The low humidity and high elevation also means that it is important to drink water frequently. Afternoon thundershowers are common in July, August, and early September. Windy conditions prevail in April and May. Snow may fall as early as November. Winter snowstorms continue into March. Many miles of roads along the rim feature numerous pullouts to enjoy the views. Hermit Road to Hermit Rest is open to private vehicles only from December through February. The free shuttle bus system provides a worryfree way to explore the developed areas of the rim. 70

The Rim Trail winds along the rim for more than 13 miles (21 km), much of it paved and suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. The Greenway, a broad, paved pathway suitable for hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, leads two miles (3 km) from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Grand Canyon Village. A separate segment heads east from Hermits Rest along the rim. The Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend steeply into the canyon. Rangers present programs—walks, talks, and evening presentations—throughout the year. All activities are free. Check in The Guide for programs during your stay. VISITOR CENTERS The National Park Service staffs several visitor centers on the South Rim. All are open every day of the year; hours vary seasonally. Grand Canyon Visitor Center Located near Mather Point The largest visitor center on the South Rim is a good stop for an introduction to Grand Canyon and for assistance in planning your visit.

corner Arizona Visitors Ask…? BY JOHNNY FENTON, M.A. CONCIERGE, OMNI TUCSON NATIONAL RESORT

Q. My [wife, husband, etc.] has to have a high-octane shot of caffeine before we even start a conversation about our day. Where can we kick start the morning with a great cup of coffee? A. Lucky you if you are one of those folks with a coffee mug that warns others to keep their distance until you’re sufficiently caffeinated, because it seems that the coffee scene is having its moment with baristas and roasters inhabiting every other street corner around the state. Is it any wonder that the coffee “bean” (which is really a seed in the coffee fruit) is the second largest traded commodity in the world proceeded only by crude oil! Hard evidence of coffee’s health benefits has been reported in numerous medical journals citing studies that show coffee: increases endurance and memory; lowers diabetes risk; revs metabolism and prevents depression. If you fancy captivating views served with your coffee, drop in at the Starbucks Coffee Company at the Hyatt Pinon Point in Sedona and take a seat on the patio for a view of Snoopy Rock and its trailhead in Northern Arizona (928)2046961. Nurse your caramel macchiato and a hot buttered croissant while you drink in the view. Then meander through the Point’s 10 or so galleries and assorted apparel shops like Rock & Rouge. Or muse over the origin of the word “cappuccino” when ordering a cup of it as you sit beside the shimmering waters of Oak Creek at Etch café in Sedona’s L’Auberge Resort. (Cappuccino was named for the color which iresembles the brown cowl on robes worn by Capuchin monks.) www.lauberge.com (Ask the folks in charge about the barista jam held every Fall in Sedona at Indian Gardens where you can witness coffee art in the making!) Coffee and cars (sorry, no comedians) is a quirky pairing that got Four till Four voted the “Best New Coffee House” in 2016 by the The Phoenix New Times entertainment digest in Central Arizona. Hard to miss this midget-size coffee outpost in south Old Town Scottsdale with a 356 Porsche parked on its patio. The featured coffee brand is Four Barrel Coffee from San Francisco. Owners Nico and Mia say a crowd favorite is the Flat 4 which is a combo of Espresso, brown sugar, soda water and whipped cream. Standard Macchiatos, Cappuccinos and expressos abound and tea, hot cocoa and almond milk are alternative beverages offered for non-coffee drinker tagalongs. Saturdays of every month there is a show of air-cooled Porsches and Adventure Mobiles and the last Saturday of the month showcases vintage off roading vehicles. (602) 300-5200 www.fourtillfour.com Housed in the historic former theater of the Gandolfo Building, is the locallyowned North End Coffeehouse in Yuma on the border of Western Arizona is

the newest hot spot where you can enjoy some of the “best legal psychoactive drug on the market today—coffee! Columbian, Ethiopian, Indonesian pour overs are available. Their espresso machine never sleeps and they carry a cornucopia of loose leaf teas. Show up on Friday nights for the Spoken Word poetry readings. Check out the local music scene on Saturdays for Open Mike Night. (928)259-8356 A French vocalist and guitarist entertains you on Sundays at Raging Sage from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in Tucson. The much-lauded pecan and jalapeno scones served with their espresso brings folks from all over to this micro-roastery, who crave a little drama with their java! East Coasters and Mid-Westerners will enjoy sitting under an orange tree while sipping their brew. (520) 3201691 But you can’t visit the University of Arizona without a trip to one of the University area’s 33-year-old institutions Bentleys Coffee House. (I first discovered it as a sorority house mother on the campus…) And hopefully Marisa is working her shift and “painting” hearts and flowers in your-cream-topped coffee cup. Their house drip is a medium-dark roast and their espresso is a dark roast, both from a boutique Southern Arizona roastery. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are an amalgam of locally grown and prepared dishes. And a favorite event is the First Saturday Poetry Slams sponsored by area high schools. www.bentleyscoffeehouse.com Then put that coffee buzz to good use and blaze a spectacular business or vacation trail! WORLD FAMOUS

GRAND CANYON

SKYWALK O

nly two hours’ drive from Las Vegas, 3 hours from Flagstaff and 4 hours from Phoenix, the Grand Canyon’s West Rim offers visitors the opportunity to experience this Seventh Natural Wonder by air, water and Sky. Located on the Hualapai Indian reservation, immersed in natural beauty and authentic Native American culture, Grand Canyon West offers multiple once-in-a-lifetime adventures. This is the location for the World Famous Grand Canyon Skywalk, a glass-floored, horseshoe-shaped suspension bridge 4,000 feet above the Canyon’s floor. Built by the Hualapai Nation in 2007, this unique vantage point beyond the Canyon’s walls feels like walking among the clouds. Condé Nast Traveler has named the Grand Canyon Skywalk one of the “World’s Best Observation Decks.” Paid admission to Grand Canyon West includes parking, shuttle transportation between the Hualapai Ranch, Guano Point and Eagle Point scenic overlooks, a visitation certificate, photo opportunities with members of the Hualapai Tribe and self-guided walks through the cowboy-themed Hualapai Ranch and a Native American village. Grand Canyon West offers the only Helicopter tours to the bottom of the Canyon and a Pontoon ride along the Colorado River. New in 2017 is the Sa’ Nyu Wa Restaurant where you can try a variety of Native and American cuisine while experiencing majestic views of the Grand Canyon overlooking the Skywalk. For visitors who have whitewater rafting the Grand Canyon on their bucket lists, Hualapai River Runners lets you avoid the years-long wait for rafting slots. The rafting season is March – October. Reservations are recommended but many rafters are accommodated calling the day before. Hualapai River Runners employs experienced guides ready to take guests on a 40-mile excursion along the mighty Colorado River. This day-long adventure combines the rush of shooting whitewater rapids with a scenic, moderate hike and the serene views of a meandering float along one of America’s most gorgeous rivers. At day’s end, guests can finish their journey by helicopter, soaring from the Canyon floor to the rim. AZ
