slide rock state park

A

s the weather starts to warm up, it’s time to consider a trek to Slide Rock State Park, located six miles north of Sedona in scenic Oak Creek Canyon. The gorgeous scenery in and around the park earned a listing by Life Magazine as one of America’s ten most beautiful swimming holes. The park was originally the Pendley Homestead, a 43-acre apple farm. Frank Pendley acquired the land in 1910 and built an ingenious irrigation system (still in use today) that allowed him to plant his first apple orchard in 1912. As time went by, the site became a tourist attraction and in 1933 Pendley built a number of cabins for vacationers and sightseers alike. Slide Rock is more than just a swimming hole. The main attraction is a long stretch of slippery creek bottom where thrill seekers can slide down slick natural water slides. There are long slides, short slides and one that ends with a deep plunge off a rock into an inviting pool of water below. The rocks are a bit slippery, so water shoes are recommended. You’ll also want your bathing suit, towels, sun screen and a camera. If you enjoy nature and bird watching, a pair of binoculars will come in handy. Many spend most of the time cascading down the natural water slides, while others simply wade in the creek or enjoy the sun along the water’s edge. Fun-filled for both kids and adults, a visit to Sedona during the summer is not complete without spending a day at Slide Rock State Park. Slide Rock State Park is located at 6871 N. Highway 89A. THE TRAIL OF TIME

During a recent trip up north with Steve Semken, a Geology Professor at Arizona State University, I was reacquainted with the Trail of Time, an entertaining and educational way to learn about the history, time scales, and processes of the Grand Canyon. The Trail of Time is a 2.83 mile long geologic timeline. Each meter walked on the timeline trail signifies one million years of Grand Canyon’s geologic history. Walking the trail gives you a visceral appreciation for the magnitude of geologic time. Bronze markers mark your location in time; every tenth marker is labeled in millions of year! Along the timeline trail are a series of rocks and exhibits that explain how Grand Canyon and its rock formed. The “Million Year Trail”, located at the Yavapai Point end of the Trail of Time, serves as an “on ramp” to the Trail of Time. Along it the first million years is stretched out to link human timescales (e.g. visitors’ birthdays and key events in early Grand Canyon explorations) with geologic timescales (e.g. climate change and Grand Canyon’s recent volcanic eruptions).

HERE COMES SANTA

Portal signs welcome visitors to the exhibit at the entry points to the trail, Yavapai Point and the west end of Grand Canyon Village. The rock column holding up this sign shows Grand Canyon’s rock actual layers, brought up from deep in the canyon. Placed at their “birthdays” along the trail are about 50 samples of Grand Canyon rocks brought to the rim from deep in the canyon. Many show spectacular features, like 1.7-billion-year-old folds, 1.2-billion year-old mud cracks, 800-million-year-old algal reefs, or 270-million-year-old fossils. Viewing tubes along the trail link times on the timeline to features and rocks down in the canyon. Waysides tied to the timeline explain the key events that lead to formation of Grand Canyon’s rocks and the landscape we see today at Grand Canyon. How to get there: Shuttle buses will take you to either end of the Trail of Time, at Yavapai Point and its geology museum or at Verkamps Visitor Center, which is located at the east end of the historic Grand Canyon Village. The start of the Trail of Time is at Yavapai Geology Museum, a half hour walk from Mather Point and the Canyon View Visitor Center. Walk into the past, walking backwards in time: Between Yavapai Geology Museum and Grand Canyon Village (1.3 miles), walk (west), backwards in time and experience Grand Canyon’s entire geologic history. You will start by walking the “Million Year Trail”, which transitions from human time scales to geologic ones. The “Million Year Trail” is immediately followed by the main Trail of Time where each meter equals one million years of Grand Canyon’s geologic history. This fully accessible one hour walking trip provides breath taking vistas of Grand Canyon and allows you to ponder and understand the depths of geologic space and time. Walk from the past to the present, forwards in time: Walking east from Grand Canyon Village takes you through the same experience, but forward in time, from Grand Canyon’s oldest rocks to canyon carving and Grand Canyon’s human history. As I’ve said many times in this column... you’ve made it this far, be sure to see why the Grand Canyon is one of the world’s natural wonders. To learn more about the Trail of Time, visit www.trailoftime.org. Our canyon information starts on page 68.

aried and vibrant aptly describe the north central region. The famous Red Rocks of Sedona. The bar where Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday drank whiskey. The mining town carved on a hillside. With four seasons and something for everyone, this region begs to be seen and will not soon be forgotten.

POPULAR DESTINATIONS INCLUDE: Sedona – Often called “Red Rock Country” Sedona is a four seasons playground for everyone – whether you’re into history and archaeology; arts and culture; power shopping; outdoor sports; or the spiritual and metaphysical, imagine doing all this in a backdrop of some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Indeed, this picturesque city is surrounded by red-rock monoliths named Coffeepot, Cathedral and Thunder Mountain. At the north end of the city is the stunning Oak Creek Canyon, a breathtaking chasm that even today, is wildly wonderful. 800-288-7336 Prescott – Just 90 minutes north of Phoenix, “Everybody’s Hometown” is an ideal destination for golfers, outdoor adventure seekers, and western history buffs. From its majestic rock formations at Granite Dells to five area lakes to more than 450 miles of wellgroomed hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, Prescott knows no boundaries for exploring the area’s stunning natural beauty. The downtown Courthouse Plaza is Prescott’s historic heart. The plaza is bordered by the famous Whiskey Row, known to have hosted the likes of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday--and still hosts eclectic boutiques, galleries, antique shops, and restaurants. 800-266-7534 Jerome – After the mines closed in 1953 and “King Copper” left town, the population went from a peak of 15,000 in the 1920s to a low of 50 people. The Jerome Historical Society guarded the buildings against vandalism and the elements, the Douglas Mansion became a

58

State Park in 1965, and Jerome became a National Historic Landmark in 1976. During the 60’s and 70’s, Jerome offered a haven for artists. Soon newcomers and Jerome old timers were working together to bring Jerome back to life. Today, Jerome is very much alive with writers, artists, artisans, musicians, historians, and families. 928-634-2900 AZ

Why Are Sedona’s Rocks

Red?

The answer to one of the most asked questions by Sedona visitors is iron! The incredible array of colors displayed by Sedona’s famous Red Rocks is a direct result of iron oxide in water seeping into sandstone rock formations. Water carrying dissolved iron oxide drains through the porous sandstone and literally paints quartz grains – you guessed it – red! The Red Rocks vary in origin, color and age. Some were originally sea sediment while others came from blowing sand. You’ll see bright orange, red and tan rocks. The brightest orange rocks are more than 250 million

years old. White and grey rocks are limestone that formed at the bottom of the sea or sandstone that had its red color washed out by water. You may also stumble across basalt extruded by volcanoes in the past. Sedona and its famous Red Rocks have been in the making for hundreds of millions of years. There are many ways to enjoy the scenery, just be sure to get out and experience Sedona’s world renowned Red Rocks! And remember, take only memories, leave only footprints. AZ

Grand Canyon The

“The Grand Canyon fills me with awe. It is beyond comparison--beyond description; absolutely unparalleled throughout the wide world .... Let this great wonder of nature remain as it now is. Do nothing to mar its grandeur, sublimity and loveliness. You cannot improve on it. But what you can do is to keep it for your children, your children’s children, and all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American should see.”
— President Theodore Roosevelt ENJOYING THE SOUTH RIM Individual interests, available time, weather, and health considerations can influence your visit to the South Rim. Use the information available on the web site, www.nps.gov/grca/, to help plan your visit. Once you arrive in the park, read The Guide and talk with the rangers for up-to-the-minute information. Elevations along the rim vary from 6650 feet (2030 m) at Hermits Rest to more than 7400 feet (2260 m) at Desert View near the East Entrance. Summer temperatures are pleasant along the rim, but increase rapidly as you descend into the canyon. Low humidity makes for big temperature differences between day and night. The low humidity and high elevation also means that it is important to drink water frequently. Afternoon thundershowers are common in July, August, and early September. Windy conditions prevail in April and May. Snow may fall as early as November. Winter snowstorms continue into March. Many miles of roads along the rim feature numerous pullouts to enjoy the views. Hermit Road to Hermit Rest is open to private vehicles only from December through February. The free shuttle bus system provides a worryfree way to explore the developed areas of the rim. 70

The Rim Trail winds along the rim for more than 13 miles (21 km), much of it paved and suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. The Greenway, a broad, paved pathway suitable for hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, leads two miles (3 km) from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Grand Canyon Village. A separate segment heads east from Hermits Rest along the rim. The Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend steeply into the canyon. Rangers present programs—walks, talks, and evening presentations—throughout the year. All activities are free. Check in The Guide for programs during your stay. VISITOR CENTERS The National Park Service staffs several visitor centers on the South Rim. All are open every day of the year; hours vary seasonally. Grand Canyon Visitor Center Located near Mather Point The largest visitor center on the South Rim is a good stop for an introduction to Grand Canyon and for assistance in planning your visit.

of a number of hikes offered and a 10-mile paved road which allows non-hikers a strategic view of the beautiful colored striations bu car. The best tip I received about this area is to view it at sunset for its most riveting views. (928) 524-6228 The hikers, cyclists and convertible crowd take to the outskirts of Tucson west along Speedway (Gates Pass) in Southern Arizona for a glimpse of the dazzling white crown cups filled with gold pollen on the giant Saguaros—our State’s flower the Saguaro blossom. These beauties attract the tiny night fliers or bats that pollenate the fast-disappearing cactus stands. Show up in March and join scores of volunteers to count the wildflower varieties in this the largest forest of the giant sentinels of the desert—the Saguaros where many of the Howard Hawks John Wayne Westerns were filmed. Then you will note the blush of Fairy duster, the sparkle of desert chicory and tangles of gold and orange brittlebush and globe mallow.
