MOM W D AZ ith a
T
ay in
his month we celebrate our mothers. Why not take advantage of the lovely Arizona weather and all the amazing things there are to do with Mom. If you’re short on ideas, here are a few of our best!
TAKE TO THE SPA A classic choice is to treat mom to a day of pampering. We’ve got some great suggestions when it comes to planning a luxurious spa day. Spa Lamar in Scottsdale offers massages, facials, manicures, pedicures and a full service hair salon as well as a yoga studio and sauna & steam room. If you’d like to relax among the red rocks, the Sedona Rouge Hotel and Spa offers first class massage, esthetic services, and wellness & intuitive discoveries. GO ON A SHOPPING SPREE If the mom you’re celebrating (which could be yourself of course!) loves to shop till she drops, consider checking out a few shopping destinations off the beaten path. For instance, Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village in Sedona provides an ecclectic collection of artistic shops to endlessly 18
browse. In Cave Creek, The Town Dump (despite it’s name) abounds with kitschy souvenirs and unusual tchotchkes, and is a delight for those who love flea market style shopping. In Scottsdale, check out the unique resale shopping boutique, High Society, which boasts brand name bargains and other upscale second hand finds. Complete with designer clothing and unique accessories, you’re sure to find a treasure. MAKE MEMORIES IN A HOT AIR BALLOON Give mom the opportunity to truly get away from it all with a sunrise flight above the Sonoran Desert. The unobstructed views are breathtaking, the flora and fauna below are stunning, and the feeling of flight is a oneof-a-kind experience. At Hot Air Expeditions, you’ll be treated to a gourmet breakfast in the desert and a ceremonial celebration upon landing — what an amazing way to make memories! Arizona KEYMagazine
TEA FOR TWO If antique tea rooms appeal, Carefree’s English Rose Tea Room is a special treat. Highlighted in our Taste of Carefree article that starts on page 32, this little bit of Britain boasts delightful macaroons and a cardboard cutout of the Queen Mum for a photo op. The Spicery in Our 1895 Home in Glendale is a charming restaurant set in multiple rooms of — you guessed it — an 1895 home. Tables are elegantly set in each room for you to enjoy high tea, including scones with lemon curd and chantilly cream, finger sandwiches, and bite-sized desserts (reservations are required). GET SOMETHING SPARKLY For mamas who love bling, why not plan a jewelry shopping spree? As unique as the mom in your life certainly is, there are enough distinctive Arizona jewelers to suit every taste. With a bold contemporary flair, the pieces at Cornelis Hollander are sure to be a fit for lovers of clean and modern design. Custom designs are also available for that special gift. Sami Fine Jewelry in Fountain Hills features an American Gem Collection of US mined gemstone designs — specifically amethyst, peridot and garnet from Arizona. If Native American and southwestern pieces are the style you desire, Gilbert Ortega Gallery is sure to please. With authentic turquoise and silver jewelry as well as an impressive array of Native American art, decor and furniture, there is much for mom to love. For those with classic taste in jewelry, the many designers carried by, and on staff at London Gold in Scottsdale will help you find the perfect statement piece. (continued on pg. 82) ArizonaKEY.com

TASTE OF Carefree
Story and Photos by Jennifer Isaacs
RESTAURANT OVERVIEW
W
e at AZ Key Magazine were recently treated to a restaurant tour of the beautiful town of Carefree which proved to be quite the cultured experience! It was a delicious evening adventure that took our taste buds all the way from Modern American, in and out of Italy, a restful treat in Britain with a few more pit stops, and ended with the ultimate in Modern Latin flare. Anyone looking for a unique foodie experience hidden away from the big box restaurants, should know that Carefree holds many gems around each and every corner. First stop – Modern American: At Café Bink, we were greeted with delicate plates of tomato, basil and hand-pulled mozzarella and a tangy pickled beet with arugula, jalapeño, pine nut, and chipotle mayo. The new restaurant owner worked for the original owner for 12 years and has kept some of the special staples on the menu along with new dishes. Café Bink strives to use local farmers for all of their fresh ingredients. www.cafebink.com | 36889 N Tom Darlington Dr., Carefree, AZ 85377

Giordano’s Trattoria Romana Ristorante was our next place to explore which was a definite taste of Italy. Straight out of Little Italy, NY where the owner Adele grew up, this quaint place has been a Carefree fixture for over 25 years. Adele bought it in 2004 and through the use of old recipes, new recipes, and ‘married’ recipes, she’s managed to keep the same chef happy — he has been there since 1992! Their pasta was perfectly al dente, and we were introduced a red prosecco …sweet and delish! www.giordanositalianrestaurant.com | 7275 East Easy Street, Carefree, AZ 85377
Thankfully we were only taking small bites along the way, because we came up to another amazing spot called Corrado’s Cucina Italiana, offering authentic Italian fare. In addition to their main dine-in menu, they will soon have a walk-in deli for imported olives, cheeses, and hand-made sandwiches on the go. A perfect place to pass through on your way to a hike or picnic! www.corradosaz.com | 100 Easy St, Carefree, AZ 85377

A break for tea and treats at the English Rose Tea Room was a wonderful choice to settle the palate and enjoy the charming and relaxing ambience of this oneof-a-kind sweet spot. Open for 16 years, many have come to know this place as a unique bit of ‘whimsy’ with darling gifts and trinkets, a great setting for small parties, and even a locale for etiquette classes. On May 19th, they are hosting a very special full day of activities surrounding the Royal Wedding that is sure to be an elegant affair! www.carefreetea.com | 201 Easy St Ste 103, Carefree, AZ 85377
A few doors down we were greeted by the casual and fun atmosphere of Venues Café, a two-story space where the downstairs was full of family and friends enjoying a meal classified as ‘upscale comfort food’ where they host weekly karaoke on Sunday evenings. Upstairs is a wide-open meeting and event space that doubles as a beautiful art gallery. The space overlooks the Carefree Desert Gardens down below. Definitely a great place to view the sunset! www.venuescafe.com | 34 Easy Street, Carefree, AZ 85377 continued on page 73

rtistic Director Emeritus David Ira Goldstein makes his return to Arizona Theatre Company to direct the final show of the 2017/2018 season, The Diary of Anne Frank (see dates and times at left). The Diary of Anne Frank, by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett and newly adapted by Wendy Kesselman, is a co-production with the Geva Theatre Center in Rochester, N.Y. In this powerful new adaptation, Anne Frank emerges from history a bright and talented young girl with the aspirations of any teenager. This impassioned drama about the lives of eight people in hiding from the Nazis in a concealed Amsterdam attic captures the claustrophobic reality of their daily existence. Anne’s story of love, hope, courage and triumph of the human spirit has captivated audiences with its profound message for more than 70 years. Why Are
Sedona’s Rocks
Red?
The answer to this commonly asked question is... IRON
T
he incredible array of colors displayed by Sedona’s famous Red Rocks is a direct result of iron oxide in water seeping into sandstone rock formations. Water carrying dissolved iron oxide drains through the porous sandstone and literally paints quartz grains – you guessed it – red!
Experience the Magic of Sedona

The Red Rocks vary in origin, color and age. Some were originally sea sediment while others came from blowing sand. You’ll see bright orange, red and tan rocks. The brightest orange rocks are more than 250 million years old. White and grey rocks are limestone that formed at the bottom of the sea or sandstone that had its red color washed out by water. You may also stumble across basalt extruded by volcanoes in the past. Sedona and its famous Red Rocks have been in the making for hundreds of millions of years. There are many ways to enjoy the scenery, just be sure to get out and experience Sedona’s world renowned Red Rocks! And remember, take only memories, leave only footprints. AZ Arizona KEYMagazine

Grand Canyon The
“The Grand Canyon fills me with awe. It is beyond comparison--beyond description; absolutely unparalleled throughout the wide world .... Let this great wonder of nature remain as it now is. Do nothing to mar its grandeur, sublimity and loveliness. You cannot improve on it. But what you can do is to keep it for your children, your children’s children, and all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American should see.” — President Theodore Roosevelt

ENJOYING THE SOUTH RIM Individual interests, available time, weather, and health considerations can influence your visit to the South Rim. Before heading out, visit www.nps. gov/grca/ to help plan your trip. Once you arrive in the park, talk with the rangers for up-to-theminute information.
Many miles of roads along the rim feature numerous pullouts to enjoy the views. Hermit Road to Hermit Rest is open to private vehicles only from December through February. The free shuttle bus system provides a relaxing way to explore the developed areas of the rim.
Elevations along the rim vary from 6650 feet (2030 m) at Hermits Rest to more than 7400 feet (2260 m) at Desert View near the East Entrance. Summer temperatures are pleasant along the rim, but increase rapidly as you descend into the canyon. Low humidity makes for big temperature differences between day and night. The low humidity and high elevation also means that it is important to drink water frequently.
The Rim Trail winds along the rim for more than 13 miles (21 km), much of it paved and suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. The Greenway, a broad, paved pathway for hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, leads two miles (3 km) from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Grand Canyon Village. A separate segment heads east from Hermits Rest along the rim. The Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend steeply into the canyon.
Afternoon thundershowers are common in July, August, and early September. Windy conditions prevail in April and May. Snow may fall as early as November. Winter snowstorms continue into March. Rangers present programs—walks, talks, and evening presentations—throughout the year. All activities are free. ArizonaKEY.com
VISITOR CENTERS: The Grand Canyon Visitor Center near Mather Point is the largest of several visitor centers and makes a perfect first stop. All are open every day of the year; hours vary seasonally. AZ

SPRING HIKES S pring is a lovely time to be in Arizona. So go ahead, indulge in the sunshine and watch the desert bloom. Arizona offers hiking trails for every skill level. Here is a smattering of wonderful hikes to choose from. Let us know how you like our selections (and post on our Instagram #azhike when you capture that amazing picture!)
For more spring hike ideas, see Concierge Corner on page 96
PHOENIX METRO AREA: Telegraph Pass Trail is just minutes away from the heart of Phoenix. This trail is an easy hike at South Mountain regional park and covers about 4.5 miles with a chance at some beautiful wildflowers as well as some petrogylphs left by the Hohokam. Siphon Draw Trail in the Superstition Wilderness is an intermediate hike that may take about 3 hours to complete. It is known to have a dazzling array of blooms including brittlebush, poppies, lupine and strawberry hedgehogs. You’ll pass an old mining bunker, and if you’re lucky and there’s been enough rainfall, there’s potential for a waterfall. Towards the end of the hike you’ll have a steep climb to the top of a flatiron where you’ll be rewarded with a wonderful view before retracing your steps to the starting point for a roundtrip total of approximately 6 miles. 76
GRAND CANYON: Havasupai (part of the Grand Canyon but not the national park) provides an amazing 10 mile hike deep into a desert oasis (complete with a perfect turquoise waterfall) and a dip in the Havasu Creek when you arrive. Special permits and advance reservations are required and sell out very quickly each season. If you’re among the 250 permitted to camp each night, you’ll be able to pitch your tent in this idyllic sanctuary before hiking your way out the next day. SEDONA: West Fork Trail runs along a creek for about 3 miles traversing dozens of streams (so bring shoes appropriate for sloshing through). Along the way you’ll view a mixture of forest and rising cliffs, and pass by dramatic ledges and overhangs. (See more top hikes in Sedona on page 56.) Arizona KEYMagazine
OAK CREEK, SEDONA
NORTHERN ARIZONA: Horton Creek Trail in the Tonto National Forest is a moderate hike near Payson. About 7 miles out and back, the trail begins at the base of the Mogollon Rim and gently ascends under a gorgeous canopy of trees. The sound of babbling water bounding over mini falls, and the surrounding moss-covered rocks give the creekside hike a lush oasis feel. The culmination is Horton Spring where water rushes down from the underground spring feeding the wildflowers that thirstily pop up around it. SOUTHERN ARIZONA: Tucson’s Hugh Norris Trail is a climbto-the-summit hike that brings you past tremendous sweeping views with a reasonably relaxed climb. This hke through the Saguaro National Park will bring you 4700 feet up to Wasson Peak, the highest point in Tucson’s mountain range. Switchbacks make for an exciting climb with a breathtaking payoff. urrounded by the glitz and glamour of Old Town Scottsdale’s tourist destinations, the Rusty Spur brings some sorely needed honky-tonk authenticity to the “West’s Most Western Town.” Smaller than a horse stable and usually packed to the rafters with neighborhood regulars and out-of-towners who want to throw back a brew in a real Western saloon, the Rusty Spur is a favorite of the local-boydone-good, country star Dierks Bentley, who has been known to drop in when visiting his old stomping grounds.

Question: Where can we hike to see some Spring colors...wildflowers, birds, etc.?
A
nswer: There’s a school of thought that believes we don’t stop hiking because we grow old—rather we grow old because we stop hiking. And while summer is considered prime time for vacations, spring is for nature lovers. From wildflowers to wildlife, the season’s beauty can take your breath away. So, to those travelers who wish to wander where the Wi-Fi is weak, here are some suggestions about hiking away from the hectic, where the garden is all around you:
NORTHERN ARIZONA
The Colorado Plateau straddles the region known as the Four Corners, where Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico meet. But in spring, wildflowers bloom all around this region. The alpine meadows and mountainsides surrounding the Grand Canyon’s South rim near Page in Arizona are a great place to see the explosion of colors, especially in late spring. The peak times of the wildflowers vary with altitude. This spring, travelers can get lower-altitude blooms in late May. Expect to find hundreds of varieties such as glacier lilies, Colorado columbine, and elephant’s head. Here one can link onto the Arizona National Scenic Trail which traverses the length of Arizona joining mountains, forests, deserts and canyons (www.aztrail.org/explore). For a shortish hike where bird varieties abound in the Navajo Nation — the largest Indian Reservation in the U.S. (near Page), you can’t do better than Horseshoe Bend where the Carl Hayden Visitors Center staff is a great source of trail information about the 8-mile hiking trail that surrounds the mesa on which Page sits.
CENTRAL ARIZONA
During a good spring there’s a bouquet of jewel-colored, showy spring flowers along the hillsides of the Tonto National Monument in Central Arizona’s Superstition Mountains where hikers amble and gaze. Flashy gold poppies, purple lupine, firecracker red penstemon and chalky-white desert chicory tint the topography. Hikers enjoy the Lower 96

Cliff Dwellings of the Salado people who lived here some 700 years ago. The desert plant life was their grocery store and pharmacy. The Tonto National Monument protects two cliff dwellings built by the Salado people. The Lower Cliff Dwelling will be open for selfguided hikes from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with rangers available to answer questions. Here you will spot the violet, saffron and red flowers of the prickly pear cactus. The Upper Cliff Dwelling, normally requires a reservation where the clouds of buttery-tinted flowers of the cliffrose bush will greet you, fragrant as an orange blossom and sometimes known by its anesthetic name — the quinine bush. Established as a national monument in 1907, the dwellings were a part of the early archeological preservation movement. SOUTHERN ARIZONA
Even in the deserts of Southern Arizona, particularly at a site in Saguaro National Park west of Tucson some brilliant gold poppies, blue lupines, muted rose-colored fairy dust and other colorful blooms beckon those who are footloose and fancy color while logging steps on their fitness trackers. While autumn rains were a no-show, late winter rains came to the rescue with “scatter rugs-- not carpets of perennials such as desert marigolds, sweet bush, and brittlebush. “Mother Nature finds a way” notes horticulturist John Wiens. One place to see some gold poppies, desert chicory and blue lupine is near Picture Rocks Road in the northeastern part of Saguaro National Park West. Another spot to ramble for color and wings is the small hummingbird garden behind the old hacienda housing the Tohono Chul Park Bistro in the “hummingbird capital of North America” Southern Arizona. (Note: Just in case you think you’re moving about smartly, a hummingbird’s wings beat between 50 and 200 flaps per second to get it on its way.) Before embarking on your getaway there are a few travel-related iOS and Android apps to make your hikes go more smoothly: Getting to your base camp efficiently makes Waze worth loading up for crowd-sourced traffic, construction zones and speed traps. Yelp will give you the closest gas stations. The Arizona National Scenic Trail is a National Scenic Trail that traverses the entire north-south length of the state of Arizona.
