NewspaperWood KrantHout | Mieke Meijer together with Vij5

Introducing a new material: NewspaperWood COLLABORATION TOGETHER WITH VIJ5 EN Mieke and Vij5 (Arjan van Raadshooven & Anieke Branderhorst) first met in 2007. By discovering the NewspaperWood in Mieke’s portfolio, a collaboration between them originated quickly. After presenting NewspaperWood for the first time in 2008 at the Dutch Design Week Eindhoven (NL), Vij5 and Mieke continued developing the material and its production process in the past 2,5 years. Next to that they invited a group of talented young Dutch designers to experiment with NewspaperWood for a first product collection within the collection of Vij5.

The layers of paper appear like lines of a wood grain or the rings of a tree ... by designlabel Vij5 EN Every day, piles of newspapers are discarded and recycled into new paper.

During her study at the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2003, Mieke Meijer devised a solution to use this surplus of paper into a renewed material: NewspaperWood. NewspaperWood shows a reversing of a traditional production process; not from wood to paper, but the other way around. When a NewspaperWood log is cut, the layers of paper appear like lines of a wood grain or the rings of a tree and therefore resembles the aesthetic of real wood. The

material can be cut, milled and sanded and generally treated like any other type of wood.

To emphasize this quality he decided to incorporate NewspaperWood into a piece of furniture by combining it with contrasting colours. NL De wegen van Mieke en Vij5 (Arjan van Raadshooven & Anieke Branderhorst) kruisten elkaar voor het eerst in 2007. Bij het zien van het KrantHout in het portfolio van Mieke was een samenwerking snel geboren. Mieke en Vij5 presenteerden het product voor het eerst samen tijdens de Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven in 2008. NewspaperWood frames by Ontwerpduo EN To symbolize the bark of a tree, Ontwerpduo covered the NewspaperWood with a thin layer of coloured paper. They intended to augment the NewspaperWood rather than to supplement it with an extra material. All employed paper colours are reflected in the growth rings of the NewspaperWood itself. A series of small frames, to exhibit your finest, smallest or most exclusive objects.

About the environmental impact of NewspaperWood by designlabel Vij5 EN NewspaperWood does not aim to be a large scale alternative to wood, nor to use all paper waste into a new material. The main theme in the project is ‘upcycling’ with which we show how you can change a surplus of material into something more valuable by using it in another context. Although printing techniques for newspapers are nowadays efficient enough to reduce the test prints and first unusable newspapers to a minimum, there still is enough material available. Next to that we use ‘yesterday’s newspaper’: the newspapers that are printed but not sold and will turn out to be old news the next day anyway .. a perfect local source for our basic material! To actually upcycle the newspapers into our new wood-like material, we (temporarily) take

the newspapers out of the already existing and efficient cycle of paper-recycling. We think it would be ideal to be able to bring our own waste material back into the circle again. Therefore we use a glue to construct the material which is free of solvents and plasticizers which would make it more difficult to recycle. With this it is not only possible to put our own sawing and sandpapering waste back into the circle, but also to bring the NewspaperWood products to the scrap yard for recycling, although we hope they will be cherished for a long time ...

NL KrantHout heeft niet als doel om een grootschalig alternatief te worden voor hout of al het papierafval te hergebruiken in een nieuw materiaal. Het hoofdthema van het project is ‘upcycling’; we laten zien hoe een materiaaloverschot in iets

waardevollers toegepast kan worden door het binnen een andere context te gebruiken.

Ondanks het feit dat de huidige printtechnieken bij de krant zo efficient zijn dat proefprints en eerste onbruikbare exemplaren tot een minimum worden beperkt, is er voor ons nog steeds voldoende basismateriaal beschikbaar. Daarnaast gebruiken we de ‘krant-vangisteren’ die niet is uitgedeeld en vandaag toch alweer oud nieuws is ... dit alles geeft ons een perfecte en lokale bron van basismateriaal! Om het krantenpapier te ‘upcyclen’ tot KrantHout halen we het (tijdelijk) uit de bestaande cyclus van papier-recycling. Ons streven is om ook ons eigen restmateriaal weer terug in de cyclus te kunnen brengen. Daarom gebruiken we een lijm zonder oplosmiddelen en weekmakers die het recyclen lastiger zouden maken. Hierdoor is het niet alleen mogelijk om ons eigen zaag- en schuurafval terug te brengen in de cyclus, maar kunnen de daadwerkelijke producten bij wijze van spreken ook met het papierafval worden afgevoerd, hoewel wij natuurlijk hopen dat ze voor een lange tijd zullen worden gekoesterd ...

How it all started EN In the spring of 2003 I started my third module in the department ‘Atelier’ at the Design Academy Eindhoven. This department (which no longer exists) was different from all others: the classes took place in the middle of the workshop. Students who chose this direction were ‘makers’. Experimenting with materials was the basis for each assignment. The assignment with the theme “wood” set me thinking. Wood is, in its smallest form, the basis of paper. Once turned into paper it does not come out of the paper recycling cycle anymore: it stays paper. I thought it would be nice to turn the process around and turn paper into wood again.

I had a stack of newspapers and started with the oldest newspaper. With a roller I glued the paper and rolled it as tightly as possible. The few days remaining for the assignment I spent experimenting with the new material. It proved to have some surprising similarities with wood: it deformed, could be sandpapered, etc. I passed the assignment ... and the project ended up in a box in the closet.

designlabel Vij5 Only in 2007 I met Arjan and Anieke of designlabel Vij5. When we were browsing through my portfolio, they noticed the NewspaperWood project. They already knew of the existence of the material, but did not know it was my design, and wanted to dive into it immediately! In 2008 we re-presented the material to the public during the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven (NL). The response was overwhelming and in 2009 it was even nominated for the ‘Doenmateriaalprijs’ a Dutch award for the sustainable and innovative use of materials.

To make the NewspaperWood into a producible material did not turned out to be so easy. From a manual process we had to improve to a less timeconsuming and cost-efficient product. Step by step we got a little further along with the project, but with every solution we came across new problems. Sometimes this was very frustrating and I am still impressed about the way Arjan and Anieke have persevered. I think that is their strength: to dust off and pick up a project and make it into a success, whatever it takes. If it had been up to me, I had given up a long time ago...

Collection At some point it was time to start thinking about making actual designs for the project! We had enough ideas already ourselves, but we thought it would be interesting to ask other designers to work with the material as well. In this way the possibilities and experiments with NewspaperWood would be examined in a wider range. Vij5 sent out an invitation with a lot of responses as result. From here we selected a group of talented young designers for a first collection. We met regularly, had exciting brainstorms, exchanged ideas and discussed the designs of which the first prototypes are presented in Milan.

EN Graduated from the Design

De opdracht met het thema ‘hout’ zette mij aan het denken. Hout in haar kleinste vorm is de basis voor papier. Eenmaal in de vorm van papier komt het echter niet meer terug uit de papierrecyclingcyclus: het blijft papier. Ik bedacht dat het mooi zou zijn om van papier weer hout te kunnen maken. Ik had een stapel kranten en begon met de oudste krant. Met een rollertje smeerde ik de krant in met lijm en rolde deze zo strak mogelijk op. Iedere dag besteedde ik twee uur aan het belijmen en oprollen van kranten en zo ontstond een papieren ‘stam’. De werkplaatsbeheerders van de academie waren minder blij met mij: ‘Of ik de stam even mocht doorzagen op de lintzaag?’ Ik denk dat het de school een zaaglint gekost heeft maar het resultaat was boven verwachting: het materiaal leek sterk en het was ook nog eens heel mooi! De paar dagen die nog restten voor de beoordeling besteedde ik aan experimenten met het nieuwe materiaal. Het bleek verrassend veel overeenkomsten met hout te hebben: het trok krom, je kon het schuren, er verbindingen in maken etc. Ik haalde mijn module en… het project belandde in de kast.

liggen te ‘verstoffen’ oppakken en koste wat het kost tot een succes maken. Als het aan mij had gelegen had ik al lang opgegeven …

Productie

Op een gegeven moment kon de stap naar ontwerpen gemaakt worden! We hadden zelf al ideeën, maar het leek ons ook leuk om andere ontwerpers met het materiaal te laten werken om zo de mogelijkheden met KrantHout breed te onderzoeken en te laten zien. Zo gezegd zo gedaan: Vij5 stuurde een uitnodiging rond met vele reacties tot gevolg. Uiteindelijk is hier een geselecteerde groep ontwerpers uit samengesteld. Regelmatig kwamen we bij elkaar om te brainstormen, ideeën uit te wisselen en ontwerpen te bespreken. De eerste prototypes worden in Milaan gepresenteerd

Ondertussen gingen we achter de schermen gestaag door met de ontwikkeling van het materiaal. Het produceerbaar maken van KrantHout ging niet over één nacht ijs. Van een handmatig proces moesten we naar een minder arbeidsintensief en kostenefficiënt product. Stapje voor stapje kwamen we daarin verder maar bij iedere oplossing stuitten we ook vaak weer op een nieuw probleem. Dat was soms erg frustrerend en ik vind het knap van Arjan en Anieke dat ze hebben volgehouden. Ik denk dat dat ook hun kracht is: projecten die in de kast

Collectie

Academy Eindhoven in 2006, Mieke works on self initiated and commissioned projects in her Eindhoven based workshop. Her ‘functional objects’ are the result of an ongoing investigation to the unperceived aesthetics of everyday life. No matter the startingpoint -from products we daily use to industrial machinery-, Mieke filters the essence and transforms ideas into designs that appeal to the imagination long term. The objects therefore keep their value. Due to the context from which her work originates, it has a narrative character. The story creates a bond between people and the objects. She doesn’t view herself as a storyteller though, but as a contextor (a constructor of context).

NL Mieke Meijer studeerde in 2006 af aan de Design Academy Eindhoven. Sindsdien werkt zij zowel aan zelf geïnitieerde projecten als aan projecten in opdracht vanuit haar werkplaats in Eindhoven.

Haar ‘ functionele objecten’ zijn het resultaat van een voortdurend onderzoek naar onopgemerkte esthetiek van alledaagse dingen. Wat het uitgangspunt ook is -van alledaags gebruiksgoed tot industriële installatiesMieke Meijer filtert de essentie eruit en transformeert ideeën tot ontwerpen die langdurig tot de verbeelding spreken. Daarom behouden ze hun waarde. Als gevolg van de context van waaruit haar werk ontstaat heeft het een verhalend karakter. Het verhaal creëert een band tussen mens en object. Ze ziet zichzelf daarentegen niet als een verhalenverteller maar als een contexteur (constructeur van context)

From A to Z

NewspaperWood desk by Greetje van Tiem EN The newspaper: a report of facts and events, which can be decomposed into images and characters. For NewspaperWood, Greetje has zoomed in on these characters. She analysed the alphabet and simplified it into abstracted forms. Fragmented, they now form drawer handles in a desk that facilitates working on an own history.

Magnetic Wallpaper The magnetic Wallpaper creates a patchwork of wallpaper on the wall. For this project, pieces of old ‘paper’ wallpaper have been glued to magnetic foil and therefore stick easily on a wall that has been treated with magnetic paint. NewspaperWood cabinet by rENs ‘Eindhovens Dagblad’ supports NewspaperWood by Henk Defilet EN Every day millions of newspapers are printed in the Netherlands. Most of those newspapers are collected and reprocessed by the paper industry as raw material for new paper. The initiative of this project proves that the reuse of newspapers have many possibilities. In reference to carefully handling their resources, the ‘Eindhovens Dagblad‘ therefore supports NewspaperWood. The ‘Eindhoven Daily’ is the leading regional newspaper in the Southeast Brabant region in the Netherlands. The newspaper is part of Wegener Media.

EN The Display Cabinet emerged from the drawers, being a characteristic element of a filing cabinet.
