Het Nederlandse ontwerplabel Vij5 is gespecialiseerd in interieur producten die worden gekenmerkt door eenvoud en het gebruik van bestaande elementen. De jonge oprichters Arjan van Raadshooven en Anieke Branderhorst ontwerpen de basis van de productcollectie, maar daarnaast wordt er binnen het merk ook bewust samenwerking gezocht met andere jonge ontwerpers om de collectie te verbreden. Doordat Arjan en Anieke ieder product vanuit een ontwerpers perspectief benaderen, heeft het merk een zeer persoonlijke stijl en hoge kwaliteitsnormen. Kloppende verhoudingen en een uitgebalanceerde compositie; het gebruik van pure, eerlijke materialen; een heldere, klare lijn en oog voor detail is wat de ontwerpen gemeen hebben.

Vij5 is a Dutch designlabel with a collection of interior products, characterized by simplicity and the use of existing elements. Its young founders, Arjan van Raadshooven and Anieke Branderhorst, design the majority of the products and actively seek collaboration with other young designers to expand their collection. Because Arjan and Anieke control all processes of each product from a designerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s perspective, the brand has a very personal style and high quality standards. Correct proportions and a balanced composition; the use of pure, honest materials; clear lines and fine details is what the designs have in common.

“Een flexibele vaas die aanpasbaar is aan het boeket dat er in zal komen te staan” De FlexVaas bestaat uit één basisvorm met drie verschillende opzetstukken. Deze opzetstukken zijn verwisselbaar door middel van een sluiting die geïnspireerd is op de bekende weckpotklem. Door het verwisselen van de opzetstukken verandert de vorm en functie van de vaas.

De FlexVaas heeft een archetypische vorm en is verkrijgbaar in helder wit porselein. De zilverkleurige klem contrasteert hiermee en is een decoratief en functioneel element tegelijkertijd. Daarnaast zorgt een zwart rubberen ring ervoor dat de onderdelen elkaar niet raken.

“Always a vase that fits your flowers” The FlexVase consists of a base part with three different inserts. The inserts can be exchanged to adapt the vase to the bouquet it holds. Based on the canning jar principle, a practical clip holds the pieces together while giving the vase a simple decoration. The FlexVase is available in pure white porcelain.

Floris Hovers samen met Vij5

Losse houten onderdelen en circa 110 meter touw vormen samen de basis voor de kruk ‘Ingewikkeld’. Door het veelvuldig inwikkelen wordt de constructie gefixeerd zonder gebruik te maken van lijm en schroeven. Iedere kruk wordt door Floris Hovers zelf in eigen werkplaats vervaardigd. Zijn industriële handwerk wordt gekenmerkt door eenvoudige en overzichtelijke industriële vormen en constructies.

Separate wooden parts and approximately 110 meters of rope result in the design of the stool ‘Wrapped’. By simply wrapping the rope around the construction is fixed, without using glue or screws. Every product will be assembled by the designer himself in his workshop in the Netherlands. The industrial handwork of Floris Hovers is being characterized by simple and clear industrial shapes and constructions. (‘Wrapped’ is a translation of the word ‘Ingewikkeld’ in Dutch where it means both ‘wrapped’ and ‘complicated’ in one single word.)

De lamp Llus is in hoogte verstelbaar door het groter of kleiner maken van de lussen in het elektriciteitsnoer die ontstaan door de houten klosjes. De functie wordt hiermee de decoratie, simpel en helder en zonder verborgen technieken.

The Lloop lamp is adjustable in height by extending or shortening the loops of the electricity cable which come as the result of the wooden pieces. With this the function becomes the decoration, simple and clear with no hidden techniques.

TafelConfetti zorgt voor een feestelijke tafel! Het is een set onderzetters van verschillende maten welke als confetti over de tafel verspreid kan worden. Voor het product TafelConfetti maakt Vij5 bewust gebruik van eigen restmateriaal; in dit geval het hoogwaardige restmateriaal van het project ‘een Stukje Tapijt’ (zie pag. 27). De kleuren van de toplaag, de tussenlaag en het stiksel zijn dan ook afhankelijk van het beschikbare materiaal.

TableConfetti makes a little party on your table! It is a set of coasters in different sizes which can be scattered over the table.Vij5 deliberately uses their own waste material to produce the TableConfetti’s; in this case the high quality waste material of the project ‘a Piece of Carpet’ (see page 27). The colours of the layers and the stitching are therefore based on the available material.

The magnetic Wallpaper creates a patchwork of wallpaper on the wall! For this project, pieces of wallpaper have been glued to magnetic foil and therefore stick easily on a wall that has been treated with magnetic paint. The product is made out of old paper wallpaper that is getting more and more rare in times of vinyl wallpapers. The detailed relief and the special use of colors was what caught the attention of Vij5 and makes a little piece already a piece of art ...

Kra antHout NewspaperWood Mieke Meijer samen met Vij5

Iedere dag worden er stapels kranten weggegooid en gerecycled tot nieuw papier. Mieke Meijer bedacht tijdens haar studie aan de Design Academy Eindhoven een manier om dit overschot aan papier te gebruiken en er een vernieuwend materiaal van te maken: KrantHout. KrantHout laat krantenpapier, dat van hout gemaakt is, weer tot hout terugkeren. Het resultaat heeft verrassend veel overeenkomsten met de eigenschappen van (massief)hout. Wanneer het KrantHout gezaagd wordt komen de verschillende lagen van het papier aan de oppervlakte. Van een afstand lijkt dit sprekend op houtnerven of jaarringen van een boom, maar wie beter kijkt kan hier en daar zelfs een letter ontdekken. Het materiaal kan gezaagd, gefreesd en geschuurd worden en is te behandelen als andere houtsoorten. Dit project wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt door het SRE Stimuleringsfonds en het Eindhovens Dagblad.

Every day, piles of newspapers are discarded and recycled into new paper. Mieke Meijer has devised a solution to use this surplus of paper into a renewed material. When a NewspaperWood log is cut, the layers of paper appear like lines of a wood grain or the rings of a tree and therefore resembles the aesthetic of real wood. The material can be cut, milled and sanded and generally treated like any other type of wood.

Mie eke Meijer together with Vij5 De wegen van Mieke en Vij5 kruisten elkaar voor het eerst in 2007. Bij het zien van het KrantHout in het portfolio van Mieke was een samenwerking snel geboren. Mieke en Vij5 presenteerden het product voor het eerst samen tijdens de Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven in 2008. De afgelopen tweeĂŤnhalf jaar hebben Mieke en Vij5 de ontwikkeling van het materiaal en het bijbehorende productieproces voortgezet. Daarnaast hebben de initiatiefnemers een groep getalenteerde Nederlandse ontwerpers gevraagd om als eerste met het KrantHout te experimenteren voor een productcollectie onder ontwerplabel Vij5.

Mieke and Vij5 first met in 2007. By discovering the NewspaperWood in Miekeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s portfolio, a collaboration between them originated quickly. After presenting NewspaperWood for the first time in 2008 at the Dutch Design Week Eindhoven (NL), Vij5 and Mieke continued developing the material and its production process in the past 2,5 years. Next to that they invited a group of talented young Dutch designers to experiment with NewspaperWood for a first product collection within the collection of Vij5.

Breg is vooral gefascineerd door de kleur van het materiaal KrantHout. Of beter gezegd de “niet-kleur”. Om deze eigenschap te benadrukken heeft hij ervoor gekozen het KrantHout te verwerken in een meubel waarbij hij het combineert met “wel-kleuren”. Dit resulteert in een serie uitgesproken kastjes met een goed doordachte en gedetailleerde constructie.

Breg was fascinated especially by the indeterminable but distinct colour of the NewspaperWood material. To emphasize this quality he decided to incorporate NewspaperWood into a piece of furniture by combining it with contrasting colours. This resulted in a series of distinctive cupboards, characterized by a sound and finely detailed construction.

Pre ess to open NewspaperWood cabinet by Floris Hovers

Een voor de hand liggende associatie met de krant is de druktechniek. Zonder deze techniek geen krant met grote oplage. Op een beeldende en suggererende manier heeft Floris de sfeer van drukpersen en letterbakken teruggebracht tot een kastje. Met een eenvoudige beweging wordt het kastje op een onconventionele manier geopend.

An obvious association with newspapers is the printing technique itself. It is a prerequisite for the existence of high-circulation newspapers. In a visual and suggestive style, Floris has reduced the atmosphere of printing presses and letter trays to a small cabinet. The cabinet can be opened in an unconventional way by a simple movement.

De Toonkast is ontstaan vanuit de laden, als kenmerk van een archiefkast. De vorm van de kast stelt deze laden centraal: geplaatst in een open kader ontstaat er een nieuwe bruikbare ruimte voor het opbergen en tegelijkertijd tonen van de inhoud. rENs ziet KrantHout als een archief van letters, woorden, zinnen en verhalen. Het archiveren, opslaan en opbergen van informatie komt zowel terug in de vormgeving van hun producten als in het materiaal KrantHout.

The Display Cabinet emerged from the drawers, being a characteristic element of a filing cabinet. The shape of the cabinet focuses on these drawers: placed in an open framework, a new functional space arises to store and simultaneously exhibit its content. rENs regards NewspaperWood as an archive made of characters, words, sentences and stories. The archiving, storage and filing of information is articulated in the design of their products as well as in the NewspaperWood material.

De verhalen uit één krant, van één dag verwerkt in één materiaal. Omgeven door messing, wordt een stukje archief draagbaar als sieraad. Als je goed kijkt verschijnen er letters, soms zelfs woorden! rENs ziet KrantHout als een archief van letters, woorden, zinnen en verhalen. Het archiveren, opslaan en opbergen van informatie komt zowel terug in de vormgeving van hun producten als in het materiaal KrantHout.

Stories from one newspaper, one day, processed into one material. Embedded in brass, a small part of the archive becomes wearable as jewellery. Taking a closer look, characters or sometimes even words appear! rENs regards NewspaperWood as an archive made of characters, words, sentences and stories. Fro om A to Z NewspaperWood desk by Greetje van Tiem

De krant: een verslag van feiten en gebeurtenissen, terug te brengen tot beelden en letters. Voor KrantHout heeft Greetje ingezoomd op deze letters. Zij analyseerde het alfabet en bracht het terug tot geabstraheerde vormen. Gefragmenteerd vormen zij de handgrepen van bureaulades, waar aan het schrijven van een eigen geschiedenis gewerkt kan worden.

The newspaper: a report of facts and events, which can be decomposed into images and characters. For NewspaperWood, Greetje has zoomed in on these characters. She analysed the alphabet and simplified it into abstracted forms. Fragmented, they now form drawer handles in a desk that facilitates working on an own history.

Als verwijzing naar de schors van een boom heeft Ontwerpduo het KrantHout met een dunne laag gekleurd papier bekleed. Hiermee creĂŤren zij een toegevoegde waarde, zonder een extra materiaal aan het KrantHout toe te voegen: het product bestaat nog steeds volledig uit papier. Alle gebruikte papierkleuren zijn terug te vinden in de jaarringen van het KrantHout zelf. Een serie wandkastjes om kleine, fijne, mooie en bijzondere objecten in tentoon te stellen.

To symbolize the bark of a tree, Ontwerpduo covered the NewspaperWood with a thin layer of coloured paper. They intended to augment the NewspaperWood rather than to supplement it with an extra material. All employed paper colours are reflected in the growth rings of the NewspaperWood itself. A series of small frames, to exhibit your finest, smallest or most exclusive objects.

Rea ading Light NewspaperWood lamp by Christian Kocx

Christian combineert techniek en functionaliteit met KrantHout: een leeslamp en krantenhouder ineen. Wanneer je de opgerolde krant uit de koker haalt gaat het licht aan, zodat de krant gelezen kan worden. Wanneer de krant terug in de lamp wordt geschoven schakelt het licht weer uit.

Christian combines technique and functionality with NewspaperWood: a reading light and newspaper holder all in one. The light switches on as soon as the rolled up newspaper is removed, allowing it to be read conveniently. When the newspaper has been put back into place, the light will switch off.

Uniited NewspaperWood stool by Tessa Kuyvenhoven

Tessa verbindt natuur en cultuur door KrantHout om een houten stam heen te laten ‘groeien’. Door gebruik te maken van een houtdraaitechniek komen de schoonheid en overeenkomsten van beide materialen samen in een spannende wisselwerking.

Tessa connects nature and culture by letting NewspaperWood ‘grow’ around a tree trunk. Taking advantage of a wood turning technique, the visual qualities and similarity of both materials are fully expressed, creating an exciting interaction.

NewspaperWood | Up pcyycling About the environmental impact of NewspaperWood

KrantHout heeft niet als doel om een grootschalig alternatief te worden voor hout of al het papierafval te hergebruiken in een nieuw materiaal. Het hoofdthema van het project is ‘upcycling’; we laten zien hoe een materiaaloverschot in iets waardevollers toegepast kan worden door het binnen een andere context te gebruiken. Ondanks het feit dat de huidige printtechnieken bij de krant zo efficient zijn dat proefprints en eerste onbruikbare exemplaren tot een minimum worden beperkt, is er voor ons nog steeds voldoende basismateriaal beschikbaar. Daarnaast gebruiken we de ‘krant-van-gisteren’ die niet is uitgedeeld en vandaag toch alweer oud nieuws is ... dit alles geeft ons een perfecte en lokale bron van basismateriaal! Om het krantenpapier te ‘upcyclen’ tot KrantHout halen we het (tijdelijk) uit de bestaande cyclus van papier-recycling. Ons streven is om ook ons eigen restmateriaal weer terug in de cyclus te kunnen brengen. Daarom gebruiken we een lijm zonder oplosmiddelen en weekmakers die het recyclen lastiger zouden maken. Hierdoor is het niet alleen mogelijk om ons eigen zaag- en schuurafval terug te brengen in de cyclus, maar kunnen de daadwerkelijke producten bij wijze van spreken ook met het papierafval worden afgevoerd, hoewel wij natuurlijk hopen dat ze voor een lange tijd zullen worden gekoesterd ...

NewspaperWood does not aim to be a large scale alternative to wood, nor to use all paper waste into a new material. The main theme in the project is ‘upcycling’ with which we show how you can change a surplus of material into something more valuable by using it in another context. Although printing techniques for newspapers are nowadays efficient enough to reduce the test prints and first unusable newspapers to a minimum, there still is enough material available. Next to that we use ‘yesterday’s newspaper’: the newspapers that are printed but not sold and will turn out to be old news the next day anyway .. a perfect local source for our basic material! To actually upcycle the newspapers into our new wood-like material, we (temporarily) take the newspapers out of the already existing and efficient cycle of paper-recycling. We think it would be ideal to be able to bring our own waste material back into the circle again. Therefore we use a glue to construct the material which is free of solvents and plastici-zers which would make it more difficult to recycle. With this it is not only possible to put our own sawing and sandpapering waste back into the circle, but also to bring the NewspaperWood products to the scrap yard for recycling, although we hope they will be cherished for a long time ... 120

Stoel #29 Chair #29 Paolo Pedretti samen met Vij5

Een stoel waarbij functie en constructie samenkomen in een gedetailleerde vormentaal en een helder silhouet. Dit ontwerp is het resultaat van een vormanalyse van de traditionele stoel, waarmee Paolo Pedretti is afgestudeerd aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Na zijn afstuderen is een deel van zijn onderzoek samen met Vij5 voortgezet, resulterende in het ontwerp van Stoel #29.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Function and construction come together in a detailed language of form and a clear silhouette.â&#x20AC;? This chair is the result of a formal analysis of a traditional chair. Cut out and folded realized using one steel plate. With this project Paolo Pedretti graduated at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. After his graduation a part of his research has been continued together with Vij5, resulting in the design of Chair #29.

Stevvia & Melk Stevia & Milk ontwerplabel Vij5

Stevia is een subtropische kruidachtige plant waarvan de bladeren een zoete smaak bevatten die (afhankelijk van de kwaliteit van het blad) wel 30-45 maal zoeter kan zijn dan suiker. Het plantje wordt al eeuwenlang door de Guaranay indianen als natuurlijke zoetstof gebruikt en ook in landen als Japan is het de meest gebruikte zoetstof. Het Stevia & Melk setje bevat naast een melkkannetje een speciale Stevia-druppelaar, waarmee gemakkelijk en precies een vloeibaar Stevia-concentraat (verkrijgbaar bij een biologische winkel) gedoseerd kan worden. (Het Stevia & Melk setje is ontworpen naar aanleiding van de expositie ‘Sugar Show’ tijdens de Dutch Design Week 2009.)

Stevia is a subtropical herb native to Paraguay, wich has been used by Guarani Indians for centuries as a natural sweetener. The leaves of Stevia contain a sweet taste that is about 30-45 times sweeter than sugar. Next to a milk can, the Stevia & Milk set contains a special Stevia dripper, which makes it possible to dose a fluent Stevia concentrate very easy and precise. (The Stevia & Milk set is designed on the occasion of the exhibition ‘Sugar Show’ during Dutch Design Week 2009.)

“Een lampencollectie waarbij elektriciteitskabel een decoratieve functie krijgt” Alles wordt tegenwoordig draadloos, maar Vij5 gebruikt elektriciteitskabel juist als decoratie. De kabel wordt door het frame van de lampenkap heen gevlochten en toont zo haar charme. Als basis voor dit product wordt er gebruik gemaakt van tweedehands lampen, waardoor iedere Kabellamp uniek is.

“A collection of lamps using power cable as a decorative element.” Everything gets wireless these days, but for that very reason Vij5 used power cables as decoration to emphasize its charming side. The cable is braided through the frame of a series of used lamps. Therefore every lamp is unique and the shape of the original lamp determines its final form.

In de basis bestaat Vij5 slechts uit twee personen: de â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;ondernemende ontwerpersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Arjan van Raadshooven en Anieke Branderhorst, die de basis van de productcollectie ontwerpen. Daarnaast wordt er door Vij5 expliciet samenwerking gezocht met andere jonge ontwerpers, om zo de collectie flink te laten groeien. De distributie van nieuw opgenomen ontwerpen wordt door Arjan en Anieke verzorgd, nadat ze samen met de ontwerpers het product uitontwikkelen en productiemogelijkheden onderzoeken. Daarbij zoeken ze naar ontwerpen die aansluiten op hun eigen handschrift.

Basically Vij5 only exists out of two persons: the young Dutch designers and entrepreneurs Arjan van Raadshooven and Anieke Branderhorst, who design the majority of the product collection. Next to that Vij5 actively seeks collaboration with other young designers to expand their collection. The distribution of the finished products is arranged by Arjan and Anieke, after they complete the design and investigate manufacturing possibilities together with the designers. With this they are looking for designs that suit their own signature.

Vij5 Arjan van Raadshooven & Anieke Branderhorst Arjan van Raadshooven en Anieke Branderhorst hebben beide totaal verschillende karakters, resulterend in een ‘perfecte symbiose’. Direct na hun afstuderen in 2006 richtten zij ontwerplabel Vij5 op, om zo de mogelijkheid te creëren hun eigen ontwerpen op de markt te kunnen brengen. Sinds ze samen werken aan een productcollectie, lijkt hun interactie nog sterker te zijn geworden. Arjan en Anieke zijn er van overtuigd dat samenwerking een meerwaarde oplevert. Daarom werd het zelfs één van de basisprincipes van Vij5, zichtbaar in het groeiende aantal samenwerkingen met andere jonge ontwerpers. “We houden van verschillende visies op situaties. Maar pas als we het er samen over eens zijn, is een product klaar en goedgekeurd.“

In fact; it is one of the basic principles of Vij5, visible in the growing amount of collaborations with other young designers. “We enjoy different visions at situations. But not until we both agree, a product is finished and approved.”

Ontwerpduo Nathan Wierink & Tineke Beunders Nathan Wierink en Tineke Beunders (beiden cum laude afgestudeerd aan de Design Academy in 2008) werken samen onder de naam Ontwerpduo. Tineke’s sprookjesachtige benadering sluit naadloos aan bij Nathan’s rekenkundige aanpak, resulterend in uitdagende producten waarbij eenvoud de boventoon voert.

Designers Nathan Wierink and Tineke Beunders (both graduated cum laude from the Design Academy in 2008) work together as Ontwerpduo (Dutch for: designduo). Tineke’s wistful approach blends perfectly with Nathan’s mathematical line of attack, forging a mind challenging ambience that uses simplicity as the key to our affections.

Mieke Meijer Mieke Meijer studeerde in 2006 af aan de Design Academy Eindhoven. Sindsdien werkt zij zowel aan zelf geïnitieerde projecten als aan projecten in opdracht vanuit haar werkplaats in Eindhoven. Haar ‘functionele objecten’ zijn het resultaat van een voortdurend onderzoek naar onopgemerkte esthetiek van alledaagse dingen. Ondanks de soms bizarre verschijningsvorm van haar objecten is er een prettige balans tussen constructie, vorm en materiaal. De ontwerpen van Mieke Meijer dragen daardoor een herkenbare signatuur.

Mieke Meijer graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2006. Since then she works on self initiated and commissioned projects in her Eindhoven based workshop. Her ‘functional objects’ are the result of an ongoing investigation to the unperceived aesthetics of everyday life. Despite the sometimes bizarre appearance of the objects, there is a pleasing balance between construction, shape and materials. The designs of Mieke Meijer therefore have a distinctive and recognisable signature.

A basic, simple approach to techniques and materials are important for designer Floris Hovers to communicate his vision and working method. With knowledge and intuition he always aims for a sympathetic design in which he cherishes the love for clarity and simplicity.

Paolo Pedretti Paolo Pedretti studeerde aan de Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam en heeft een bijzondere aandacht voor duurzaamheid, materialen en het hergebruik van alledaagse voorwerpen. Hij laat zich graag inspireren in een creatieve en internationale omgeving. Het ontwerp van de ‘Stoel #29’ van Paolo is onderdeel van de collectie van Vij5. Vooral de geabstraheerde vorm en het strakke grafische uiterlijk maakt de stoel tot een bijzonder object.

Paolo Pedretti studied at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and has a with special attention to sustainability, materials and reuse of everyday objects. He prefers to get inspired by a creative and international environment. Paolo’s design of the ‘Chair # 29 is part of the collection of Vij5. Especially the abstracted shape and sleek graphical look makes the chair a special object.
