I am a super passionate visual thinker/curator with a developing sensibility to everything candid. Off-beat - street smart - minimalist is the adjective I swear by.
In Architecture there is no set rules or prerequisites in realizing a project and that to me means everything.
The Process
Being an Architect in the 21st century, means to cut down on everything that is insignificant and to shape the rest to make room for life. Curating spacial experiences in collaboration with nature is what I look forward to, professionally . I believe, to achieve excellence in design one should think simple and not stop at it. Though excellence is subjective, a design that tackles all the prevailing challenges at once, like a solved jigsaw puzzle is the kind of excellence I aim for. And curating this rather poetically is always a eureka moment.

fern A mixed-use development consisting of a three storey retail complex and two luxury residential towers rising upto ninety-five meters, in the skyline of Mangalore City. Designed with a motto to create a new landmark to envisage the city’s emerging identity as a trade capital, Fern is designed to stand tall as a connoisseur of growth and glory.

Softwares- Revit, Lumion, Photoshop, AutoCad
The trend of the development of the city and the locality is studied to understand and estimate the potential clientele and is compared to the running floor area cost of the locality ( Derebail, Mangalore ) to achieve flats with floor plates well under the financial capability / loaning capacity of the discovered cliental (I.e Upper Middle Class). This development there-by focuses mainly on families who belong to Mangalore and neighboring towns of Udupi, Manipal who have settled overseas for better financial scope and livelihood and wish to have a space of their own in their beloved home town when they return, apart from the real-estate investment culture which is expected to shoot as the trade capital flourishes in the next couple of decades.

A similar trend has been seen in the city of Surat, Gujarat where the diamond and textile industries are pioneering a speedy growth and people are preferring to stay in gated communities compared to stand alone villas which is also being reflected in their market prices. Drawing reference from this, Fern is designed to become one of the first of its kind development in the city providing 50% more floor area and un-matched ceiling heights (3 mts.) promoting improved standard of living in apartments.

Level 1 and 2 of the MLCP becomes integrated to the Showroom and Cafe respectively. And the rest becomes storage for 200 new cars.
The Service Center takes the profile and is placed below the MLCP at 3 meters below the ground level, heighted 6 meters to keep the vicinity considerably quiet and undisturbed. The MLCP is designed to have a tight floor plate comprising of two separate up and down ramps, circulation lane and Parking Bays with zero negative spaces. Each floor houses 40 cars and can accommodate 200 cars in total.
Since the site is located on the National Highway in Pune towards Mumbai, the first glimpse of the development is expected to be from the flyover as ones drives towards the structure and so its south east profile is well planned to attract eyeballs in all its glory, like a peacock trying to get the attention of its mate.

Kala-kshetra is a traditional yet in-time approach to a fine-art school that provides training in four majors namely Clay moulding, Carpentry, Stone carving and Painting. The site happens to be located in the vicinity of two infamous Jain Temples namely Chaturmukha Basadi (4 faced temple) and Gometheshwara Math.

The site is located in Karkala, Karnataka in a low lying valley surrounded by two famous temples overlooking it from the top on either sides. One with a 13 mts. tall Gommateshwara statue from1432 CE. Existence of two dead patches on the site with monolith rock formations was a major challenge. The proposal goes about rather includes it into the design by making the bigger rock as a carved, leveled seating for the amphitheater. Whereas the second one marks the territory between the outside and inside of the complex.

A spiritual quality is introduced to the space by placing an expanse statue of Goddess of Art - Saraswati at the central core that is open to sky, brining in a strong focal point and also governing the sanity of the school. This draws a chord with the existing two infamous Jain Temples which sees a lot of tourist footfall throughout the year. Half yearly, the temples conducts certain rituals/ festivals that attract a very high footfall of deities. Drawing attention of these deities by providing a direct passage between the two temples through the school complex is brought by the making a direct north south access. The students can exhibit their creations to the outer world during these festive times which in turn boosts real world interaction to them.

The construction method is envisaged to be rather traditional. Barring the curved ferro-cement walls that classify each spaces, the roof is made out of mangalore tiles and for workshop areas a thatched roof is introduced with bamboo supports which is left to the nature to flourish on/around it, making it low maintenance and easy to construct. Multiple workshops are placed closely knit consciously, keeping the ones that create louder sounds together from the ones that require tranquility, so as to promote collaboration between different majors. Staff rooms are centrally placed, with each teacher/guru seated with a remote-visual connect to their students at all times. Main Entry

ARCHITECT O CT ’ 2 1 - P R E S E N T
1 YR 5 MOS.
After being introduced to the real world at Pragrup, Bangalore headed by Ravindra Kumar (Design Director at VA group/Visiting Faculty at Columbia University, NY,USA) where I learnt and contributed in bits, in projects of varying scales and majors simultaneously, I got the opportunity to join Studio PKA, a boutique practice based out of the Art district of South Mumbai, for my second academic internship. The workspace is called the Loft and is an award winning space by itself. Our principle, Puran Kumar is a proactive, hands on, mastermind who promoted a flat hierarchy within the studio. The team is close knit (10-12 professionals) and highly interactive with each one bringing something different on the table. At first I had a culture-shock to adapt to such an elaborate and precision driven workflow. But as time passed I was thrilled to see how I matured and was guilty of being a little too obsessed about what I delivered. Constructive criticism is part of the studio culture and it eventually forced me to do more and better. On completion of my stint, out of the four interns in the studio, I successfully bagged a full time position. As a Jr. Architect, I was exposed to multiple studio activities and got to deliver even more courageously. As time passed-by learning, delivering, gaining perspectives and understanding the intricacies involved in building, I was commissioned to deliver a two thousand square feet corporate office in the heart of Kala Ghoda, under the direct supervision of the associate architect. We went about designing, making construction drawings and getting it to site to discuss with all the different contractors on weekly site meetings, where there were real time challenges and on-site exchange of solutions of overcoming it. Clients were supportive and we shared a healthy connect. As I handed over this space I felt super content and pumped to do a lot more and eventually make a mark.

As one enters the apartment, the passage, labelled ‘The – L’, not only acts as a transition and connects the day and night areas but also provides refuge to the collection. The dining and living constitute the day areas which spill into each other – forming a cohesive whole yet standing out as individual entities by way of their distinctive style. Large fenestrations connect the living area with the world outside while the dining area spills out onto a deck – where one could sit and enjoy a cup of tea on a winter morning or reminisce about the past, while the sun sets over the horizon.

Installing the sculpture to seamlessly become part of the wall
The Canvas – a confluence of art and architecture – gives rise to a symbiotic relationship which focuses on the creation of an experience through the masterpieces that adorn the walls, which in turn are brought to the fore by the materials themselves. In essence, this duality lends credence to its name – ‘The Canvas’ as a work of art in itself as well as its ability to frame the world outside.

In the age of optimized fast construction, traditional modernism can play a crucial role in preserving culture, imparting knowledge and also helping in upskill workers to understand and learn the process of building - using techniques that are vernacular and sustainable at the same time. Traditional Modernism inherently responds to the site and its context and hence paves the way for a design language that is of the place. Massing Process
Colombo has a special relationship with water and this is accentuated by the canal adjacent to the site which is mirrored by a large water body as soon as one enters the Centre. Following the concept of multiple interconnected courts on different levels, the structure grows from the ground – utilizing the soil below as a construction material – eradicating the presence of a large mass, essentially becoming part of the site itself. Rammed earth, Rubble, Bricks, Bamboo and Concrete comprise the materials used to design the Learning Centre.

To start with the client acquired a brand new shell of a thousand sq.feet in Kala Ghoda, also know as the Art district of the City, in the proximity of Bombay Stock Exchange. The context was very art centered with ample intricate designed spaces of historic and monumental importance. The Client himself inherited a lot of quality Art which he was keen on displaying in his new office which become the starting point for the design approach along with the company requirements.
Phase-wise Evolution
Once the layout was fixed on, we went about making multiple mocks and 1:1 drawings to drill real-life activities and for-see the challenges that the were to be addressed through design, because of the tight floor plate, which is quite common for projects in this part of the city. The space was strategically designed to draw focus to its tall ceiling heights (4m) that it inherited being at the top floor, which in turn made up for the rather tight floor area. The entire design process was quite hands-on with design decisions being made as the shell was being developed, understanding how the space responded to it.

Cabin Executive
As the shell started developing over multiple weekly site reviews with the principal and all the different consultants present together, which also happened to be the most insightful day of the week, unit level requirements were released. The clients wanted their movable furnitures to be custom made catering their personal requirements. While the chairs, couches and other decor was chosen from high end brands likeHaworth,Natuzzi,RocheBobois etc, their desks, side runners, consoles, display units, benches etc. were all designed and produced in collaboration with skilled artisans/carpenters that the studio proudly flaunts. Our principle with his expertise in proportions and materiality fine tunes the design before being sent out.

The console for the executive cabin made of satined teak, is one such proud realizations of mine designed to complement the sleek profile of the Fern chair and to accommodate a fairly big planter that came as a requirement in spite of the space constrains, following the design.

Final Product
The divider unit that separates the reception and the office was designed with an inbuilt planter and water drain with approvals form the onboard horticulture team. Part of the standard process was to make an onsite temporary mock, followed by alterations and then finally constructing. Along with all the working drawings, these detailed drawing were developed and discussed with the contractors prior to construction. The studio is so precision driven that breaking down and reconstruction of substandard execution was a part of the process.

Finally, I also got to commission my friend to shoot the space for the final docket, which turned out to be super rewarding since we already shared that connect and could seamlessly exchange thoughts and ideas.

While at Architecture School, I designed a cafe space within the campus which was realized in 4 months form start to finish. Inputs ranged from competitive name suggestion to developing renders to executing the same with the carpenter. And another retail space for an organic store in Mumbai with a rectangular 300 sq.ft floor plate with, customer accessible product crates in three sides, a shorter island in the center, a billing counter and storage on the top floor. Project scope included complete brand identity to interior execution.

Commissioned by a known peer to design a shopping complex in his two acre ancestral plot which had t point to present to partners to convince them to eventually bring the project to life. The vicinity is full of m of such complexes with pretty straightforward G+1 designs that were developed by the builders who p there.

The Podium therefore has a sharp and simple approach, laying the individual shops along the Highway, y and ambience to offer. It buys form my experience of having lived in the town for 5 years, and so acc second floor that is designed to hold restaurants and bars which is still disconnected from the main function at late hours and has a wonderful double height space, attracting high-end franchises to take up, Result is a complex with 4-5 shops on each floor of three prominent configurations suitable for show apparel/general stores, and gyms/restaurants.

LOCATION-COLOMBO, SRI LANKA PROJECT - ARCHITECTURE COMPETITION THEME - TRADITIONAL MODERNISM YEAR- 2021
Note: This is my original take on the same Architectural Competition for the professional works section.
KURAI (The Roof) View
With Traditional Modernism being the theme for this Learning Center in Columbo, and given the site context with on overlooking a canal and a golf course on the other. I went about designing the main structure that stood as a moder monument for the general public to use the area actively and without disturbing the prime function of the inside le center that stated at a -3 m and comprised of just one main floor with basement and terrace shielded by a stepped sta steel shell with horizontal perforations to let in light and ventilation in a defined manner , letting the visitors to climb it top which became a observatory with the panoramic views of the golf course. The design channels water from the canal to form a reservoir of its own that is connected to the internal koi-pond which was also the main water storage unit for the entire project. This in turn changed the front experience for the visitors and also the passerby’s making the street feel like a bridge over the canal.

The internal koi pond is constructed with levels such that its forms extra passage to cross sides as the natural water level lowers and vise versa. This becomes a dynamic feature in the rather static architecture of the space.

A filtered collection of presentable results of all the extra curricular activities I was involved in during my secondary school, junior college and few during my course at Manipal, done out of sheer Joy. Basically all the things I did for my soul before architecture happened.
