With over 56% of the world’s population currently living in cities, the need to improve this way of living is constantly at the forefront of innovation. Combine that statistic with our ever increasing human population, and the need to address such issues as commuting, supplies, struggling economies, and general public congestion become all the more urgent.

Luckily, the technological advancements of artificial intelligence have proved to lend quite the helping hand in these matters.

AI has introduced numerous smart city concepts in recent years that are closer to being realized now more than ever.

Considering how tech-based a lot of cities are, these also make the perfect environments for testing artificial intelligence; the following examples being just a few of the countless ways AI can upgrade urban infrastructure.

Public Transportation

Combining machine learning and computer vision allows developers to create more sustainable forms of transportation. A great example of this is through Hayden AI in Oakland, California. They have successfully built the first autonomous traffic management system that operates through vision-based artificial intelligence. These devices can be found on city buses, trains, garbage trucks, and even street sweepers.

This technology allows these vehicles to detect any objects listed on a map or GPS, such as lanes, traffic lights, street signs, and any physical objects on or near the street.

One of the more difficult-to-predict factors that Hayden AI took into consideration was inner city traffic, oftentimes blocking bus lanes and other important areas. More AI-powered vehicles would lead to less of these traffic jams, and a more positive impact on city transit.

Politics and Society

With the popularity of artificial intelligence growing every day, a large number of specialists have recognized the importance of representation of this technology within the political world. The AI World Society is made up of leaders in technology, government, and innovation to positively build AI’s image around the world.

Artificial intelligence could greatly benefit potentially life-saving resources, such as water, electricity, and housing. With this increase comes the need for more awareness among politicians and citizens alike if it is to truly have an impact on our world. Today, AIWS has a growing potential for more and more people to have access to this technology, with locations in Paris, Rome, Vienna, Munich, and the United States.
