UNTIL NO CHILD NEEDS US, WE NEED YOU.
Thank You for Helping the Children of Arkansas I’d like to share some exciting news with you: the Arkansas Children's Hospital Century of Possibility Centennial Campaign raised more than $188 million to improve the health of children in Arkansas. Since you were instrumental in this success, I wanted you to be among the first to celebrate your historic achievement. The campaign funds are designated for pediatric care, ground-breaking medical research, continuing education and statewide prevention programs. Thanks to you, these funds will help ensure every child in the state has access to world-class pediatric care – for those who need it and those who might. The goal for the campaign was $160 million. But if we focus on only the dollar amount, we miss the bigger picture. These funds have had and will continue to have a tremendous impact on the health and safety of Arkansas’ children. You can read more about the impact you’ve had through your generous support on pages 7 – 15. In 2007, we began this campaign with the promise of possibilities to come. Today, we celebrate the realization of many of those possibilities because of you. This milestone achievement of $188 million is made possible by thousands upon thousands of Arkansans. This is your win. Thank you. We have come so far in seven years, but we still have a long way to go. While we’re celebrating $188 million, we’re not finished. We need your continued help and support to ensure every child in Arkansas has the chance to be better today and healthier tomorrow. Until no child need Arkansas Children’s Hospital, we still need you! On behalf of the patients and families of Arkansas Children’s Hospital, thank you for all you have done and all you will continue to do to ensure Arkansas is a healthier, safer place to be a child.

iffany and Adam Poe knew they were in good hands when they met with a team of Arkansas Children’s Hospital cardiologists to develop a life-saving plan for their son, Eli, just two days after he was born. Because her daughter was born with a genetic disorder, Tiffany’s doctors wanted to monitor her second pregnancy closely. The Poes traveled from Selma, AR, to Little Rock every month to monitor Tiffany's progress. During a routine ultrasound, their unborn son was diagnosed with two very serious congenital heart conditions that would need immediate attention once he was born. On Aug. 24, 2011, Tiffany gave birth to Eli. He received his first heart surgery at Arkansas Children’s Hospital when he was only six days old. “The communication was great. There was not a day that went by that my husband and I didn’t know what was going on,” says Tiffany. “The nursing staff was wonderful and took care of everything we needed.” After the initial surgery, doctors at ACH also discovered a hole in Eli’s heart and were not comfortable sending him home. “They walked us through what they wanted to do, and a transplant was always a possibility on the list,” says Tiffany. Eli was placed on the transplant list Sept. 30 and received a new heart on Nov. 5. “We had a wonderful liaison who kept us updated every two hours,” says Tiffany. Every thought was running through her mind. “It was a relief to receive the heart, but the fears were there – what if it doesn’t work?” Thanks to donors like you, the surgeons and staff at ACH's David Clark Heart Center were more than prepared for the 12-hour surgery that saved Eli’s life. By the end of November, Eli and his family were able to return home, but his recovery was not complete. At 18 months of age, Tiffany noticed that Eli’s vocabulary was not progressing. Research shows that children with congenital heart defects are more likely to experience
developmental delays. Knowing this, Eli’s team of doctors suggested neurodevelopmental testing to assess his speech and motor skills. As a result of the testing, Eli was diagnosed with childhood apraxia of speech, a common motor/speech disorder. Eli knows what he wants to say, but his brain has difficulty coordinating the muscle movements necessary to say the words. The team at ACH helped coordinate services through the school district in Eli’s hometown. “We are grateful we had our testing done early,” says Tiffany. “Eli is a happy and healthy little boy. And now he has an even better chance at a typical childhood.” “We are so thankful for ACH,” says Paula, Eli’s grandmother. “This place saved both our grandchildren. We donate twice a year so ACH is always here when children need it.” Just 25 years ago, children like Eli did not survive. Your generous support helps save lives by ensuring ACH remains on the forefront of advancements in cardiac care. Thanks to donors like you, ACH will launch a new multidisciplinary Cardiac Neurodevelopmental Program later this year. The program is designed to help more children like Eli through early identification of speech and motor delays. The neurodevelopmental testing will become a routine part of every heart patient’s follow-up care, ensuring that more and more children have the chance to be better today and healthier tomorrow. ELI: BEFORE AND AFTER Baby Eli (inset) had open heart surgery at only six days old and received a new heart when he was eight weeks old. According to his mother, Eli is "all boy," despite a speech and motor delay. He receives therapy services close to home, thanks to coordination from ACH staff.

A Generous Community Thank you.
The Century of Possibility fundraising campaign started with an ambitious goal: to raise $160 million to transform pediatric care, research, education and prevention. Together, we exceeded that goal, raising $188,700,912! But our success is not about the amount of money we raised together. It’s about the thousands of patients your gifts touched. It’s about the miraculous difference your generosity made for patients, families and communities all over the state. 8

UPGRADING ANGEL ONE, THE “FLYING ICU” Our helicopters can reach any child in Arkansas within 55 minutes – a relief to families across the state. More than 2,000 patients are rushed via helicopter to ACH for life-saving care every year. The aircraft are aging, though, and need to be replaced with newer models to continue our top-notch level of service. Donor support helped purchase two new helicopters, which you’ll see in action later this year.
In July 2013, we opened the South Wing – the largest expansion in our history. After surveying parents, patients and staff, and integrating evidence-based healthcare design principles, we built a space that meets today’s healthcare needs. Because of you, the South Wing expansion offers a new standard of family-centered care. The South Wing includes the Log A Load for Kids Emergency Department, which records more than 50,000 visits every year. Also located in the South Wing: intensive care units for cardiovascular and neonatal patients; inpatient units for infants and toddlers and pediatric cancer patients; and five outpatient clinics.

FORMER CHIEF NURSING OFFICER CHRISTIE BERNER’S PLANNED GIFT SUPPORTS EXCELLENCE IN NURSING
C
hristie Berner, former Chief Nursing Officer for Arkansas Children’s Hospital, believes in supporting children’s hospitals and the nurses who provide care in them. “The people, the ambience … everything about a children’s hospital, to me, is special and different from adult institutions,” says Berner, who spent 12 years working for ACH before retiring. During her tenure at ACH, Berner’s hard work and encouragement helped lead to the establishment of the ACH nursing endowment in 2005. Set up on behalf of the ACH nursing program, the endowment supports nursing education, professional development and research. In addition to the nursing endowment, an endowed chair for nursing research was created in 2009. “The endowed chair was such a highlight of my career,” she says. “It was a wonderful step toward really improving patient care through the implementation of evidence-based nursing practices.” Recently, Berner made provisions in her will to benefit the ACH nursing program. This decision was the result of her delight in seeing the professional growth of nurses over the course of 27 years in nursing administration. Although Berner worked at multiple pediatric hospitals, she chose to make ACH a beneficiary of her will because of the special role the hospital played during her career. “I always felt that ACH was a unique and special part of my career. I gained the most from working at ACH, the hospital where I served for the longest period of time and where I ended my career in nursing administration. I feel compelled to give back because of what ACH afforded me.” From her current home in Mancos, Colorado, Berner enjoys working directly with children as a volunteer and mentor through CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate for Children) and the Pinion Project. She encourages others to do the same, calling the direct contact with children “rewarding.” “It’s amazing to see how much impact one person can have on a child. The caring and support of children and families is what’s important to me,” she says. “I have so much to be grateful for, and I’m glad to find ways to give back.”
