50 Years: Spreading the Love of Literacy

A Message from the ALA Chair

Welcome to this year’s 50th literacy conference! We are beyond excited that you are here. After two years of online meetings, ALA has looked forward to seeing you face-to-face! ALA has such an amazing legacy of encouraging literacy across this great state of ours…from writing competitions, to book clubs, to bringing in top speakers for conferences and webinar; all these have, for 50 years, kept ALA at the forefront of literacy leadership. Keynotes Colleen Cruz and Kekla Magoon, along with authors Wade Bradford, Shanda McCloskey, and Brian Lies, and so many more, all join ALA for two days of learning, growing, and fellowshipping together. In addition, over these two days, we will host a birthday party! Fun! Your ALA Board has an exciting 2022-23 planned. We appreciate your being a member. Need to renew? Want to join? Be a part of this amazing organization as we strive to spread our love of literacy. In the meantime, while you are here, please reach out to any of the officers or board. Our goal, as with every year, is to make this the best one yet! Tammy Gillmore ALA Chair 3

ILA State Coordinator’s Message

Dear friends, Twenty-five years ago it was my pleasure to chair ARA’s Silver Anniversary, “Sharing the Treasure for 25 Years.” What a grand celebration it was. I had no idea at that time that we would be together twenty-five years later “Spreading the Love of Literacy” at our golden anniversary. Fifty years of literacy leadership in the state and in the nation is a huge accomplishment. Way to go ALA members and literacy loving friends. The world has certainly changed in the last 25 years; in fact, it has changed the most in the last three years, I think. The needs of students, families and educators have changed. So my prayers go with you as you continue to impact the lives of children and families in your work. If in doubt that you change lives, please read the student Writer’s Showcase winning articles in the 2020-2021 journal The Reader. The articles there will affirm just how important your role is - as teacher, as counselor, as observer and so much more. Thank you for joining us for this excellent conference. It is our hope to serve you and your needs. Special thanks to Tammy Gillmore, Conference Chair and ALA State Chair, for the multitudinous details she has taken care of in her preparation for this conference. Kacy Barden, Kelly Hogan, Tara Derby, Ashley Zeigler, Rose Estes, Shelby Tedford, Rochelle Dalton, Kristen Bowman, Lyndsey Laster, Karen Robinson, Danna Williams and Amy Thompson have provided lots of support and help in preparing to return to a “live” event. Thank you. Thanks to Craig O’Neill, his camera team and to the Arkansas Children’s Book Committees for helping making our event so celebratory. Here’s to the next 25 years! Happy birthday, Arkansas Literacy Association! Jeanne Trawick, ILA State Coordinator

Risk. Fail. Rise. Mistakes Can Carbonate Your Teaching and Student Learning Using a blend of humor, theory and research, Colleen will explore the role of mistakes on teaching and learning. Participants will leave with real world strategies for creating mistake-welcoming schools and classrooms. M. Colleen Cruz is an educator with over two decades of experience in both general education and inclusive settings, Colleen is also the author of several books for teachers including Risk. Fail. Rise. A Teacher’s Guide to Learning from Mistakes; Writers Read Better: Narrative; Writers Read Better: Nonfiction; and The Unstoppable Writing Teacher, as well as the author of a young adult novel Border Crossing, a Tomás Rivera Mexican American Children’s Book Finalist. Colleen co-edits the Not This But That series with Nell Duke - a popular series of books that pairs research and practice. For many years, Colleen worked at Teachers College, Columbia University where she has been instrumental in developing practices to support students with IEPs, leading the partnership with ChildMind Institute, innovating instructional methods using digital tools, and architecting a large-scale tutoring project. Colleen does not shy away from the hard stuff, while staying firmly grounded in joyful practice. She does this through listening closely, considering relevant research, and building relationships while developing and demonstrating actionable steps. Whether working with teachers on revamping their classroom library to reflect their student’s needs, or a grade level to develop protocols for implementing interventions or a schoolwide team to audit systems that might be in need of change, Colleen makes sure that those she serves get the honest, warm, and practical support they need.
