English Learning Academy

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

Learn the English skills necessary for academic and social success through expert classroom instruction and exciting programs and activities offered. As an ELA student, students will have free and unlimited access to all university services and facilities with your paid enrollment, including recreational facilities, student health facilities, the library, email, computer access, and student organizations and clubs.

DIRECT ADMIT TO A-STATE

You will not need to submit any test scores such as TOEFL or IELTS in order to attend academic programs at A-State once you successfully complete the ESL program. To be directly admitted, you must complete the final level of the program with 80 percent or higher proficiency for undergraduate admission, or 90 percent or higher proficiency, and receive a passing grade for graduate admission.

ACTIVITIES

The English Learning Academy also offers activities for students to be involved in both on campus and around Jonesboro. Activities include sports tournaments, game nights, movie nights and trips to the farmers market. Each semester, at least one trip is made to Memphis to visit the International Market, where students can often find ingredients and foods from their home countries that aren’t always available around Jonesboro.

CURRICULUM

The ELA program consists of five levels plus a foundation level for students with little or no English experience. Each level focuses on the four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, as well as pronunciation and grammar. Students are expected to complete homework assignments, quizzes, exams and participate for a final grade. Oral communication courses will also require students to do oral presentations and writing courses will require students to keep a writing journal.
