There is no support network for an Arkansas Tech University student that can match his or her own family. Your engagement in your student’s education is fuel for their resolve and will to persist. By demonstrating why you value a college degree, it helps your student understand why all of the study sessions and all of the hard work are worthwhile. Parents of college students are at a challenging crossroads. I should know. I’ve sent three children to college. When should we intervene? When should we let them learn on their own? How can I be the best resource possible in helping my student achieve his or her academic goals? I wish I had the perfect answer for each of these questions. Here is what I can guarantee: independent research has found that Arkansas Tech University is without question the No. 1 institution in our state when it comes to providing graduates with upward social mobility. ATU ranks among the top 10 percent of colleges and universities nationwide on CollegeNET’s Social Mobility Index. Our focus on student success and the philosophy of “every student counts” that is part of our institutional culture mean that the student in your life will have access to every resource necessary to achieve a better life through a degree from Arkansas Tech University. Thank you for entrusting us with your student’s education. It is a trust that we take seriously, and we are here to partner with you to make your student’s time at ATU a positive and transformational experience. Sincerely,
Dr. Robin E. Bowen President

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE OPTIONS Having an understanding of the total cost of attendance is a crucial first step in planning how to pay for school. The Arkansas Department of Higher Education (ADHE) provides a comprehensive overview for parents. This information is applicable to students from Arkansas and out-of-state students. This information can be found at https://scholarships.adhe.edu/educational-costs/.
STEP 1: COMPLETE THE FAFSA Complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.gov. Make sure to fill it out and submit the FAFSA each year you are in college. Arkansas Tech’s Title IV school code is 001089. If you want your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) sent to us, you need to put this number on the FAFSA. After you submit your FAFSA, you’ll receive your Student Aid Report (SAR). Your SAR summarizes the information in your FAFSA. Review it and make corrections if needed. Your award letter explains the combination of federal grants, loans, and work-study a college is offering you. The offer might also contain state and institutional aid.
STEP 2: LOOK FOR SCHOLARSHIP AND GRANTS Financial assistance opportunities are not limited to FAFSA. Take time to look for additional opportunities both locally and statewide. Arkansas Tech University’s scholarships can be found at www.atu.edu/scholarships. The Arkansas Department of Higher Education (ADHE) provides a comprehensive list of scholarships for Arkansas residents. This information can be found at https://scholarships.adhe.edu/scholarships-and-programs/a-z/. Private scholarships are offered through many different outlets including businesses and organizations. ADHE has a great resource to help you understand financing college. You can find this information at https://scholarships.adhe.edu/other-financial-aid-resources/.
STEP 3: FEDERAL STUDENT AID Loans made by the federal government, called federal student loans, usually have more benefits than loans from banks or other private sources. The U.S. Department of Education has great resources on this process. This information can be found at https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/types/loans.

UNDERSTANDING THE BILLING PROCESS Once your student has registered for fall classes and completed the housing application process (if applicable) you will be thinking about how and when the payment process begins. Below is a timeline regarding your student’s bill. 1. Monday, July 15, 2019: Tuition charges and related fees are posted to your student’s account. a. These can be found in the student portal on OneTech. b. Charges reflect: i. Classes registered for ii. Board approved fees iii. Room & Board (if applicable) 2. Wednesday, July 17, 2019: All types of financial aid will begin to authorize on your student’s account. This includes: i. Federal financial aid ii. Scholarships (University, State, Private) iii. Grants a. These reflect the current authorized funds your student will be receiving and will be viewed as a credit on your account. However, these funds do not become actual credits until just prior to or on the first day of class. b. If your student has been awarded Federal Work-Study these funds will not reflect on your bill at this time. Being awarded work-study does not guarantee funds. Students must find a qualified on-campus job in order to earn these funds. 3. Monday, July 22, 2019: Student account balances will be emailed to your student’s account. By mid-July you will have an up-to-date understanding of your student’s current charges for the fall semester. This will help you as you plan to fund the fall semester. Unless you are certain on your incoming financial aid and/or scholarships, it is recommended that you do not set up a payment plan or make a payment in full until all funds are authorized (just prior to or on the first day of class).

COMMON PHASES DURING TRANSITION The transition experience for most college students has observable phases, beginning months before they arrive on campus. Your student may either go through the most common ones successively, at predictable times, or show signs of some but not others. By knowing to expect these phases, parents and families can better respond to their signs with empathy, encouragement, straightforward talk, or a combination of all three.
1. EARLY-SUMMER ANTICIPATION Following high school graduation, many students start the summer feeling pride in their past achievements and anticipation for what’s next. They may experience a letdown, but those feelings give way to optimism and excitement – and maybe a little impatience – as they look forward to Arkansas Tech.
2. MIDSUMMER ANXIETY When students realize that in just a few weeks they will be leaving their comfort zone – their home, family and friends – to enter an allnew world, feelings of sadness and insecurity may emerge.
3. EARLY-FALL PANIC Orientation has ended, classes have begun, and students may suddenly feel overwhelmed. For some, the adjustment to roommates, a heavy workload and an unfamiliar social environment can feel like too much to handle all at once.
4. THE “HONEYMOON” Students may focus on all the upsides of Arkansas Tech – the new friends, the freedom, the intellectual thrill – and seek every opportunity to prove they are where they belong both academically and socially.
5. THE HONEYMOON’S OVER! Uh-oh. Where did the time go? Where’s all this hard work coming from? Especially for overextended students, the honeymoon ends with such questions, which can cause anxiety, self-doubt, regret and homesickness.
14 Common Phases during Transition
6. THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER… The novelty of being at Arkansas Tech has worn off, and the stress and hard work seem never ending. Some students may fantasize that transferring to a different university would solve everything.
7. “YOU CAN’T GO HOME AGAIN” Home for break, students may be shocked to discover that the daily routines of family life have gone on without them. It can feel alienating, as if their absence had no effect or their relationship to “home” shifted without their permission.
8. COPING Sometime during fall semester, many students feel they finally have it figured out: they can get work done, use the library without fear, have a social life – and stay on top of their laundry! They prove to themselves that they have what it takes to be at Arkansas Tech.
9. REALIZATION By the spring semester, students often make a realization: consistent academic success at Arkansas Tech takes an enormous amount of hard work
10. PUTTING IT TOGETHER By the end of the first year, students start to see Arkansas Tech as a total experience. They know that hard work and achievement must be priorities, but downtime and enjoying life are essential for balance.
Common Phases during Transition 15
