01. Shopping Mall Project Type: Academic
Building Type: Commercial Year: 400 Level, 2023
Shopping Mall || Selected Works
PROJECT BRIEF The aim of this project was to task the student with dealing with a difficult site topography, to come up with a creative way to design a shopping center on a piece of sloping land with minimal use of the cut and fill technique, meaning the building’s form would need to utilize the topography levels for vertical circulation and form generation. The project also tasked the student with space planning for a large scale structure, and defining a clear structural system.

Professional Fiverr Work [Garage Building] Project Type: Freelance Building Type: Residential
PROJECT BRIEF I was recently contacted by a homeowner looking for professional guidance to create an elaborate plan for a recreational vehicle garage on their property. The objective was to develop a spacious facility that could comfortably house two RV vans, in addition to a smaller garage for other vehicles, all designed to ensure convenient accessibility between them. Moreover, the homeowner expressed the desire for the garage complex to seamlessly integrate a luxurious living area, effectively combining practicality with a touch of sophistication.

Rebuilding The Heart of The Siargao Community Project Type: Architecture Competition Building Type: Public Year: 2022 Organisers: Archstorming
Rebuilding The Heart of The Siargao Community || Selected Works
PROJECT BRIEF The main goal of the contest was to rebuild the island of Siargao after the disaster that took place last December 16, 2021, when the Super Typhoon Rai made landfall in the Philippines and damaged around 90 to 95% of the island structures. In order to do so, Archstorming partnered up with the NGO Lokal Lab, an organization that is rebuilding the island as fast as they can. We were challenged to design a new community centre which is made up of the local market as well as a canteen and gathering space for the villagers, to replace the old one that got destroyed. Our project “Rebuilding the Tabo” for the Siargao community is a special design collaboration from two regions of the world. Our design team was formed from Europe and West Africa, specifically students from a British and Nigerian architecture school.

C ON C E P T Overall, there were two guiding considerations for our design: > firstly the environmental hazards that are experienced in the region, most recently by typhoon Odette, in addition to the local climate and > secondly serving the needs of Siargao people. Drawing knowledge from our team’s diverse background- residing in both tropical Africa and the Northern Hemisphere, we have applied our collective architectural knowledge to a design for the new Tabo.
MATERIA L SEL EC TION We
have
selected
materials
and a framed structural system that can withstand the adverse environmental working
conditions,
within
the
yet
budget
constraint. Materials are locally sourced
such
as
bamboo,
concrete and wood. Our building walls are formed of concrete masonry units on the ground floor and bamboo on the first floor. Doors and windows are slatted and louvered for airflow ADAPTING THE FORM TO ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS & SITUTIONS
and ventilation. A unique feature of our design is that the entire building is surrounded by an outer
skin
of
bamboo
and
wooden structure, to protect from direct sunlight.

s ite pla n C ON C E P T Accessibility is at the heart of our design; access to the building is via the stepped entrance or ramp. Circulation within the market space is particularly important, we have ensured multiple openings with visitors able to continue gathering outside the space. The market leads through to the community eatery. Outside is a multi-functional shaded space, spacious wooden deck, carefully planned community garden, shady orchard and composting area. We have ensured a flexible, multi-functional and easily adaptable design for possible change of use in the future, in the case of emergency. On the first floor, firstly there is an extra eating area and a community space. This characterful multi-functional space is surrounded by easeful window seats and a versatile teaching and gathering space. The adjoining studio space has a balcony overlooking the church. The roof is constructed with wood, covered with corrugated sheets. Roof gutters made from aluminium are anchored to the base of the roof and run around the building to drain rain water. Water is collected and carried to a water tank placed on the ground floor to store. A 3-chamber septic tank ensures safe disposal of waste water.
