SPEAKERS Brian Reed, Zilkha Biomass Energy Reed has more than 30 years’ experience in wood procurement, sustainable forest management, harvesting, quality control, environmental stewardship and biomass energy. Prior to Zilkha Biomass, he was procurement manager for Georgia-Pacific at the Fayette, Ala., sawmill and Columbus, Miss., chip mill. Early in his career, he worked for St. Regis Paper company in chip mill and short wood procurement for the company’s paper mill in Monticello. He holds a bachelor’s degree in forestry from Mississippi State University. Dr. Becky McPeake, Arkansas Forest Resources Center McPeake is professor of wildlife extension at the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture, Cooperative Extension Service and the Arkansas Forest Resources Center, where she has worked for 17 years. She has a B.S. in wildlife management, M.S. in wildlife education and Ph.D. in the human dimensions of wildlife. Previously, she has worked for the Missouri Department of Conservation and Cornell University. Caroll Guffey, Arkansas Forest Resources Center Guffey is an extension forester for the Arkansas Forest Resources Center. He develops, organizes and implements continuing education short courses for natural resource professionals. He also works as a resource for county agents to help with questions/ concerns dealing with forest management, shade and urban trees, prescribed fire, forest insect and disease, GIS and GPS, and forest landowner issues. In 2012, Guffey was selected as a Fellow by the Society of American Foresters. Andrew Baum, President and CEO, ArborGen, Inc. Baum joined ArborGen in 2012 as president, CEO and member of the board of directors. During Baum’s 30-year career in the technology industry, he has served as the president and CEO of Sembiosys Genetics Inc., taking the company from a universitybased research initiative to a fully integrated, publicly traded biotechnology company focused on developing pharmaceutical proteins and nutritional oils. His career has also included working in increasing levels of responsibility for Calgene, Inc., becoming president of the oils division in 1992. Previously, Baum was the CEO of Oberon FMR—a clean-tech feed ingredient company. He has served as a key leader to the Biotechnology Industry Organization and is now chairman of BIO’s Food and Ag Section Governing Board. Baum earned a B.S. in industrial engineering and operations research from the University of California, Berkeley.


Barry Shiver, President and CEO, Smarter Forestry Shiver formed Smarter Forestry to combine his academic and operational expertise in forest management. He was a long-time faculty member at the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, University of Georgia, and retired as Professor Emeritus of Forest Management. He developed the graduate and undergraduate inventory course and co-authored Sampling Techniques for Forest Resource Inventory. He became an expert at silvicultural treatments for southern pines and developed growth and yield models that incorporated treatment responses. Shiver left academia almost a decade ago to work in operational forestry and became the driving force behind ForesTech International, where he served as CEO. D.K. Knight, Executive Editor, Hatton-Brown Publishers Knight is co-publisher, executive editor and business partner with Hatton-Brown Publishers, Inc., a privately held small business established in 1948 and based in Montgomery, Ala. Hatton-Brown dominates the U.S. forest products publications field with Timber Harvesting, Southern Loggin’ Times, Timber Processing, Panel World, and Wood Bioenergy. Knight attended Jacksonville State College and worked five years as a reporter before joining Hatton-Brown as an assistant editor in 1968. Subsequently, he helped launch four industry magazines, assisted in the acquisition of additional publications, and helped establish and expand the company’s trade show division. In 2011 he assumed the role of executive editor. @timberharmag @southernloggin Dr. Brooks Mendell, President, Forisk Consulting Mendell has 20 years of consulting, operating and research experience in forestry, finance, and the timber and bioenergy industries. He leads Forisk’s research and forecasting program. His experience includes roles in harvest operations and procurement with Weyerhaeuser, management consulting with Accenture, and as a member of the forestry and finance faculties at the University of Georgia. Mendell has published numerous articles and three books. He earned B.S. and M.S. degrees at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an MBA at the University of California at Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in Forest Finance at the University of Georgia. Marshall Thomas, Executive President, F&W Forestry Thomas began with F&W in 1978 as a field and technical forester, eventually rising through the ranks to become president. Since 1988, Thomas has led F&W through a period of rapid growth and service-area expansion that now includes 19 offices in 11 states and international offices in Uruguay, Brazil and Europe.


Roby Brock, River Rock Communications Roby Brock is the CEO of Talk Business & Politics, a 16-year multimedia news organization reporting on business developments and politics in Arkansas. Under Brock’s direction, the TB&P supporting staff, contributors, and content partners represent the most knowledgeable and experienced in their fields. Content is driven through many media channels. Brock also moderates radio programs on NPR affiliates statewide. A subscription magazine, daily e-newsletters and web reports are also produced with state business profiles, leading industry developments and current political discussions. @robybrock @TBArkansas Joe Hopkins, Immediate Past President, Forest Landowners Assn. As a fourth-generation landowner from Georgia, Hopkins has been involved in forestland management all his life. After graduating from Emory University in 1974 and Mercer Law School in 1977, he practiced law until 1989, when he closed the practice to manage family timberland. He has been a member of FLA since 1993, elected to the board in 2005 and currently is chairman of Governmental Affairs. He has served on the board of the Georgia Forestry Association and was president in 1997. Also, he was a founder of the Greater Okefenokee Association of Landowners, formed in 1994 to coordinate the forest landowners’ needs with the fire-fighting and prevention resources to combat fires that threaten landowners around the Okefenokee Swamp.

Bill Imbergamo, Executive Dir., Federal Forest Resource Coalition FFRC is a national non-profit representing purchasers of Federal timber, conservation groups, and county governments. Imbergamo was named as its founding executive director in 2011. He has been involved in forest policy since 1991, when he started with the National Association of State Foresters. After ten years with that organization, including four as Executive Director, Imbergamo was named director, congressional affairs and forest policy at the American Forest & Paper Association. Imbergamo has been a member of the Society of American Foresters for more than a decade and is a member of Ducks Unlimited Federal City Chapter. Jack Arnold, Deputy Assistant Regional Director, Ecological Services, Southeast Region, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Arnold began his career with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1980 in Alaska and North Dakota. In 1983, he was employed by the North Dakota Game and Fish Department as a Wildlife Biologist. In 1985, he went to work for the Bureau of Reclamation in Bismarck, ND. In 1988, he returned to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and has worked in Illinois, Minnesota and the Washington, D.C. area. Since 2006, he has served as the Deputy Assistant Regional Director, Ecological Services in Atlanta.


Dr. James Kroll, aka ‘Dr. Deer’ Kroll is the Henry M. Rockwell Chair in Forest Wildlife, Director of the Institute for White-tailed Deer Management and Research, and Co-Director of the Pineywoods Native Plant Center. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Baylor University and a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University, where he was the Distinguished Graduate of 1973. Dr. Kroll is one of the leading wildlife biologists in the nation. Since 1973, he has been a leading research scholar focusing primarily on the ecology, habitats, ecosystems and management activities that support healthy white-tailed deer populations. He has taught courses in wildlife habitat management, wildlife management techniques, wildlife ecology, land management planning, white-tailed deer ecology and management, introduction to forestry, wildlife diseases and research methods. He has directed 32 theses or dissertation projects during his career at Stephen F. Austin State University. www.drdeer.com
