The design philosophy of the Indigenous Landscape Concept is to create a holistic design based on indigenous design principles to give identity and continuity to the development. The Indigenous Landscape Concept is a desert themed landscape based on the elements of the native Dubai environment. Each element is translated into a particular landscape space that gives form and function to the design. The landscape has a sense of place and local identity. The reason for the Indigenous Landscape Concept selection is to create a design that’s fits within the local landscape in order to reflect the development’s intent. To design a landscape that stands out from its contemporaries and to create it’s own identity. This is a new community with a diverse population and with multi uses in a residential environment. TWO STOREY RESIDENTIAL RESIDENCES . PHILIPPINES . 2012

PROJECT INVOLVEMENT Concept Stage: Design Development | 3D Modeling | Construction Package: CAD Drafting and Detailing, Estimate and Cost Plan, Specifications

Concrete, steel, glass and natural stones give this residence the unique modern vibe. The design brief is to create a modern haven on the provincial island setting. The location is proximal to a beach front and often visited by moderate to monstrous cyclones every year, the structure has to be typhoon proof. The lot is small, every inch is maximized.

Protective walls, utilitarian walls, accent walls. The series of walls protects the residence from the annual monsoons yet welcoming a year-round sunshine. The walls make the house appear massive considering its limited lot.

[ 54 ]

The brief was to design a residence that conforms with the lot location. The lot posed few challenges. Flanked in the middle of the archipelago where a frequent cyclone path, this was taken as major consideration. The house has to be sturdy, typhoon-proof and well-positioned for minimal damage. 40 meters on southwest is a beach front. With a sea view missing, the ocean gale - known to be harsh and sometimes devastating, poses a more pressing concern. A firewall facing that direction was installed to be the first line of defense against the strong winds. The plot is fairly small. With all the spatial requirements, every inch of space is precious. Traffic flow and space planning was carefully laid.

Every square inch was maximized to give an impression of openness. Despite its small site, this house creates an impression of scale. The strict geometry, clean lines and mix finishings of the house make it stand out vis-a-vis a more traditional houses nearby. The black stone clod wall breaks the generally white facade. It immediately gives an ambiguous character. Concrete, stone, concrete and steel when mixed together makes a contemporary look. The exterior color palette is black, white and 2 shades of gray.

There is a careful consideration on the positioning of the living spaces in respect to the movement of the sun. Philippines is a tropical country, overheating can be a problem. Ceiling is well insulated and clearance is big for enough air circulation. It is also well ventilated. The spaces are naturally well-lit. The house is beautiful as it is sustainable. Its carbon footprint is lowest possible. The power system is hybrid, solar panels were installed on large portion of the roof.

DISCIPLINE | ARCHITECTURE

This house was designed with passive cooling and lighting in mind. The glazing and fenestration were carefully laid out to harness prevailing winds and breeze. The interiors is modern. The clean lines from the exterior spill over to the interior design. Red accents break the overall white walls. Black and gray pieces add interest to the spaces. Natural-stained wood gives a homey feel to the residence. A balance of old and new, international and Filipino is perfect mix reflective of the client’s personality. The client is a world traveler; jet-setting from Dubai to Milan, or Mumbai to Sao Paolo. The design is tailored to his requirements and taste.

TWO STOREY RESIDENTIAL RESIDENCES . PHILIPPINES . 2017

PROJECT INVOLVEMENT Concept Stage: Design Development | 3D Modeling | Construction Package: CAD Drafting and Detailing, Estimate and Cost Plan, Specifications

Located in a laid-back town, north of the Philippines, the residence is a standout. The design is minimalist; the white exterior compliments the tropical provincial setting. Simple lines, different treatment of concrete, black metal works and glass gives the residence the modern look. The natural wood material breaks the rigid straight lines, injecting warmth to the living spaces. The lot is limited, the open layout makes the residence larger while maximizing every inch of space.

The residents is fond of nice and finer things. What better statement than to have a fine house as well? Monochromes of white is the color palette. White makes the space elegant. Like a blank canvas, the accessories will give variety of colors to the spaces. The minimal colors should deliver the sense of calmness enforcing more the retreat resort vibe.

Concrete, wood and steel, the modern house is a vision in a suburb town, up north of the Philippines. The white residence is a cut above the rest. It encapsulates the minimalist and contemporary style. It is dynamic but elegant, vibrant yet mature. It is transcendent and set to withstand the test of time. The brief is to create a resort like abode. Only 70 percent of the lot were utilized for the structure to create outdoor pockets for landscaping.

With careful consideration, every space on the ground level opens up to an outdoor landscape, extending its area once the enclosure is opened and blurring the line between indoors and al fresco.

The shower in the en suite of the master bedroom opens up to the sky. The owner can bask in the sun or shower under the stars. The shower area is also enclosed with lush greeneries. Adding the resort feel to the space. A real retreat right inside the house.

[ 59 ]

The dining area opens to above. A grand chandelier hanging from the high ceiling illuminates the space. This is the heart of the house. The site of this house is a reclaimed marshland. Humidity could soar. The openings of the house were designed to make it well-ventilated and lighted. It takes advantage of natural renewable resources. The high ceilings keeps the house cool and the large windows keeps it well-lit. Simple solutions to make the spaces comfortable with minimal energy use.

ONE STOREY RESIDENCE

The ideal plot has a meter elevation from the national road line. To a location where it is raining 50% of the year, the challenging lot is rather a blessing than a curse. Flanked on the center of the lot, the modern residence is a breath of fresh air on the sleepy, provincial town. The residence was designed to cater a young modern family. The uniform slope of the main roofs is the major design feature to counter the sweltering tropical summer sun and the heavy downpour on monsoon months.

DISCIPLINE | ARCHITECTURE

Minimal through and through, the weatherproof house takes full advantage of the site elevation. Rough weather frequents the place, it was designed to counter the inevitable. The multi-tier almost flat roofs break the impact of the strong wind. A hidden retractable grilles is set to protect the picture windows which is glazed with tempered glass. While it a appears a utilitarian house, it never lacks elegance and character. The similar slopes of the roofs and horizontal elements draws rhythm. Concrete treated with different finishes adds interest. Wood planks breaks the rather hard concrete facade. It brings warmth and homeyness to the total look. One should learn not to put all the eggs in one basket - 3 major materials dominates the design. Knowing how to strike a balance and not to go overboard, the design should offer black spaces and eye rest.

[ 61 ]

This residence is a result of good collaboration between the owner and the designer. The requirements and the communication was established well, creating a tailored -made, well-suited modern residence.

ONE STOREY RESIDENCE RESIDENCES . PHILIPPINES . 2012

PROJECT INVOLVEMENT Concept Stage: Design Development | 3D Modeling | Construction Package: CAD Drafting and Detailing, Estimate and Cost Plan, Specifications

The residence is divided into three sections - the retreat, social and banquet sections. The site is unlimited so the need for vertical development were never considered. The client just want the residence to crawl right into the hilly site. The strict lines of the house confirm its essentially cubical design complimented by a charcoal gray colored wall feature along the main entrance. The three main elements being repeated throughout the design are concrete, steel and wood.

[ 62 ]

DISCIPLINE | ARCHITECTURE

The residence is flanked in picturesque suburban setting. The hilly site is the most ideal spot anyone could ask. The lot is limitless. Though it is enclosed with fence, the adjacent plots are still part of the vast expanse. Vertical living was never considered. The client envisions a house that would encapsulate their personality and lifestyle - modern and dynamic. The couple both pursuing a consequential careers in the city needs a retreat to come home to. The design brief was to create an abode that offers modern convenience but low maintenance. The power couple never shy away from the uncommon, the charcoal gray entrance wall is a welcomed decision. The black steel canopy is an additional treat. The customized steel and wood main door straight away exudes with personality. The koi fountain gives the “Zen” effect to the house. The entrance alone suggests calm and collected. The open plan of the makes house look spacious. The long and narrow windows provides the lighting to the living spaces. The dining area opens to an outdoor lanai. The glass sliding door allows the natural light and cool breeze to enter house.

The materials is are concrete, glass and steel to convey the modern feel to the building. The operational side of things has been carefully considered. The setting is in the tropics, the natural light and ventilation comes very handy. The prevailing breeze will cool thru the interiors with the large openings on both sides of the church. The design is both inspirational and aspirational, the structure will be a focal point of a community.
