00_TRONDHEIM OF TODAY POOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT: The public transport system in Trondheim is insufficient. On average, one will spend about 25 minutes just getting out of the city center.
01_TRONDHEIM OF TOMORROW This project is a story about how a city can develop by providing a solid base for development: the most efficient and practical form of transport. When this element is in place, we expect the densification to evolve around the transport system. By introducing a sufficient transport system, the different parts of a city will be tied together despite their individuality. Our idea of Trondheim could be in the form of an atom. The nucleus is portraying the city center. The electrons, the smaller centers, are sirculing in orbit around.
DIFFERENT IDENTITIES: Trondheim is also a city with many faces. There lies a strong identity within the different parts of the city, which holds a lot of potential.
02_STRATEGY FOR TRONDHEIM
By 2040 the second building step of the light rail is finished. The light rail forms three rings covering most of the developing areas. Trondheim has densified around the first building step and the connected developing areas are being used.
Trondheim’s public transport is not sufficient for its 170 000 potential customers and many districts, making car the fastest means of transport. Knowing that in 40 years the number of citizens will peek 300 000 a high-speed light rail is planned.

03_STRATEGY FOR LILLEBY

Lilleby is an area of old industry and overgrown nature. The area is planned as one of the development areas along the new light rail. Most of the existing buildings are planned to be demolished.

The centre of Lilleby is built. The buildings are primarily carĂŠ-shaped. A new light rail station is built into a highrise structure near the City Lade. A green park for recreation replaces Smelteverket.

The first step of building the new light rail has reached Lilleby. The central station has been built, as well as a few blocks nearby consisting of mostly offices. Smelteverket is nearly fully demolished to give room for green space. Demolished Preserved

04_LIGHT RAIL The rail is elevated over ground level. By doing this it will act less like a barrier, and is more easily implemented in city spaces, buildings and existing infrastructure
If the city rail is to function like an attractive development-axis, and as a good replacement for cars, it will have to have a very high functionality: • THE STATION: Short waiting periods as a result of a well functioning station-system. Easy to get on and off. A station which is accessible and well developed, with tight relations to other public transport, carpark-depos and commercial functions. A capasity of departure every 30 seconds is predicted within the system, which means a capacity to export/import over 1900 people per hour - at one station. • THE CARTS: Speed, dynamics. Seats, luggage storage and bicycle storage. Each cart has seats for 16 people and 7 bicycles. • THE GROUND: The rail-space flows through the streets as a natural part of the surroundings. Structural frames keeping the rail elevated can have further functions as load-bearing elements in buildings, and furnishing elements on the ground. The rail itself adds an own dynamic to the street space, like a living roof, whith no sound.

On the rails steeper parts, like this one, the loadbearing structures hinge will regulate the angle of the cart, and keep it horizontal. The loadbearing structure also allows the inner cart to rotate freely along the carts axis (x), so that when it rotates, its kept horizontal in the other axis (z)
When the stationbranch of the rail levels out, the cart returns to the top side again. This top side of the rail is an own transportlane, which will let carts pass eachother, not making a queue.
The cart rotates back onto the stationrails transportlane, leaving the platform. From here it accelerates moving up to the main rail, aquiring regular rail speed. The constant speed allows for the carts to move with relatively short distance to eachother, increasing the capasity of the rail.
The cart rotates down from the transportlane to the platform, and is accessible for exiting/entering. Multiple cart can be parked here at the same time, so that one can choose which one to take, depending on where its heading.

The columns will have their own esthetic quality. Each column consists of three parts, where only one is load bearing. The columns will be clearly visible from the street and will invite people in. At ground floor some of the columns twist to create benches. The twisted columns continue into the park, and by that they connect the roof, park and market.

Movement pattern. The roof has 4 columns - one for each entrance zone - to create a transition from the streets to the market.
The outdoor roof. The light rail tangents the roof and creates a natural boundary to the station. As the roof approaches the park the glass disappears.

The breathing space displayed is located in an area of Lilleby where the structures are mainly offices and trade spaces. The space has the intention of opening up the urban space in the office area, and giving the people that are working there a chance to breathe in, enjoy some sun, or have a coffee in the cantina with their colleagues. On top of the conference center behind the orphanage, there are rooftop housing, for those who wish to live close to work, or just like to watch busy people.

Detail study: BIG-SCALE STRUCTURE + STATION These big-scale structures are the meeting point for many different people and functions: - Housing for about 1000 people located in the “arms� towards south-/southwest - Offices towards north - Transport node: Bus stop on north ground floor, light rail station on second floor. - Link between Lilleby and City Lade The light rail cuts through the three buildings. This creates a passage for pedestrians that connects the three buildings together to themselves and the whole complex to Lillebya.
