Vita

Jorge Pensi

Born in Buenos Aires in 1946, Jorge Pensi studied architecture in his native city. When he graduated in 1971, he had already begun to design furniture as a partner in an interior design firm.

He left Argentina in 1975, became a Spanish citizen and settled in Barcelona in 1977. Together with the designer Alberto LiĂŠvore and the theoreticians Norberto Chaves and Oriol Pibernat, he founded the "Berenguer Group".

In 1984 Jorge Pensi opened his own design firm. His most important colleagues are Diego Slemenson (since 1987), Constanze SchĂźtz (since 1995) and Roman Proubasta (since 1999). One of his first works, the aluminium chair Toledo for which he won several awards, made him famous far beyond the Spanish borders. Since then, he has worked as a product designer and architect for international firms.

Since 1993 he has taken on teaching posts, including a design course headed by Richard Sapper and Klaus Lehmann at the Academy of Arts in Stuttgart.

Jorge Pensi is married to Carmen Casares and has two children.

Method of working

Works

The architect as a designer

Function and emotion

The furnishing is added to the room and always relates to it in a certain context. The designer must decide whether the furniture is to be incorporated into the layout of the room when it is being designed or whether it is to be an autonomous object independent of a particular location, which can prevail alone anywhere and everywhere.

Jorge Pensi not only considers it legitimate but also indispensable to have and preserve his own personal style. Objects must not simply serve their purpose, but also arouse emotions.

It is characteristic of Pensi's work that he sovereignly commands both aspects. As a qualified architect, Jorge Pensi sees the room as a whole; as an industrial designer, he sees the individual object. Truly modern objects are those which can adapt to the most varied requirements without losing their identity.

The designer as an artist

For Jorge Pensi, designing something means working with matter, giving it shape and transforming it into a concept. Although he gives shape to objects which can subsequently be reproduced ad infinitum, he feels a very close affinity to the sculptor.

At the moment of creation, he lets himself be guided by intuition. Only after this moment are his creations compared and discarded, analysed and selected. He achieves maximum expression with as few means as possible. No matter how abstract the form, his aim is to convey emotion.

His objects are personalities which he endows with characteristic traits in accordance with their function. Identity as the counterpart to a universal stylistic standardisation.

Awards and partners

Jorge Pensi was awarded the Spanish National Design Prize for his life's work in 1997. The importance of his work is reflected in numerous international design awards, many papers published in trade journals and the presence of his products at leading design exhibitions.

He has designed for: Akaba, Amat, Andreu World, B.Lux, Cassina, Disform, Driade, Kron, Kusch+Co, Inno interior, Mobles 114, Punt Mobles, Frighetto, Leucos, Perobell and Poggenpohl, amongst others.
