We are so happy you have decided to join us on this new and exciting journey. We are so happy to bring a delightful lighter side of the New Orleans experience. New Orleans is the center in our view, of the food world; New Orleans has no shortage of James Beard chefs, fun and food culinary talent. So, we decided that, that talent and the food love here should be shown and appreciated. These past 2 years have been difficult on many of us -our family, our friends and ourselves, but we should all be hopeful about our future here in New Orleans. We have great leadership under Mayor Cantrell, amazing healthcare professionals, Governor Edwards and our local businesses and people fighting to build New Orleans back. We are starting to come out of a difficult time due to the pandemic. So, lift your head and your spirit up New Orleans. Every day, all of us together, united are getting better and stronger. We hope this publication not only enlightens and entertains you but makes your day a little bit brighter and lighter. New Orleans Home Chefs Queen Of Oshun and we at 504 Soul Food Groove are thankful and proud to have the honor of presenting to our readers, this outstanding New Orleanian; Not only did she allowed us to share her story, but she gave us a great recipes for all our readers to enjoy and share. So, All Hail the Queen, We present Queen Of Oshun Ms. Joan Ann Brown. Enjoy. Ms. Joan Ann Brown abides by the scripture “I will bless the Lord at all times, His praise shall continually be in my mouth, (Psalms 34) Ms. Brown serves as Choir Director and Song Leader of the 4 Choirs at William Ross United Methodist Church: The Mass Choir, Male Chorus, Youth Choir, and the Children’s Choir. She is also Minister of Music at Berean Presbyterian Church on Simon Bolivar Street here in New Orleans. She has travelled abroad extensively, singing the praises to God as lead vocalist of the Philharmonic Gospel Choir, which has traveled to the country of Norway for 10 consecutive years; singing to hundreds of people at festival and churches. Ms. Brown has also been featured as a lead soloist on a plethora of music programs at church, school, and organizations, such as, Trinity Episcopal Church, Mt. Zion UMC,The Norwegian Seaman Church, the Zulu Social & Pleasure Club, Tulane University, the Ernest Dutch Morial Conventions Center, and the Jazz & Heritage Festival and a multiplicity of other edifices throughout the city. She has performed with international stars, such as, Lou Rawls, Deacon John, Charmaine Neville and David Batiste. She also sang at the 2017 New Orleans Jazz Festival in Tribute to Joe Cool Davis in the gospel tent.

Another attribute of Ms. Brown is acting, she was chosen to appear in major roles in

several theatrical plays. At her alma mater, Dillard University, she appeared in leading roles in “Tambourine To Glory”,” Mamma I Want to Sing “and “The Gospel According to Colonus”. She also has appeared on the stage at the Andrew Jackson Theatre in Chalmette, Louisiana, having performed the lead role in “A Date with Betsy”. Ms. Brown has been an educator in the New Orleans Public School System as a teacher. Her educational endeavors are quite lengthy. She received the Bachelor of Arts Degree from Dillard University and the Master of Education Degree (plus 30 hours) from Southern University in Baton Rouge, La. In addition to the state degrees, her educational credentials also include 6 different Educational Teaching Certificates from the Louisiana State Department of Education. Because of being highly qualified and her extraordinary teaching resourcefulness, Ms. Brown was cited twice as “Teacher Of The Year” of the New Orleans Public School System. She is also an author, an author of Children’s Books, written in relation to the different areas of the Audubon Zoo. She is published in the Teacher’s Reading Journal, the published article in entitled “A Challenge to the Classroom Teacher”. Ms. Brown is a member of St. John Institutional MBC. At St. John, she formed the Evangelistic Crusaders and for many years, this group visited Parish Prison, the Youth Study Center and The Drug and Alcoholic Unit at Veterans Hospital, bringing the Word Of Salvation. She is the surrogate mother of Ebony Brown and the grandmother of 13-year-old Johnathan Brown. She recently became a member of the renowned Zion Harmoizer and has become their first female member to join the group.
